Support from the Kaipara community has been paramount in the effort to raise the $18,000 needed to purchase an AutoPulse machine for Dargaville Hospital. The automated CPR device is widely used in Australia and has the potential to save hundreds of lives here

House and garden tour

If you have sometimes looked and wondered about the gardens and houses around this district that are bigger than most, your chance has now come to check some of them out. As a fund-raiser the Parish of Northern Wairoa has organised a House and Garden tour of nine homes, an hotel, a three quarter-acre informal garden with a picnic area and a professionally designed Dargaville town garden. The tour covers a wide variety of styles from the Lockwood Smith home in Ruawai, to two homes in Dargaville, a recently renovated Commercial Hotel, one home each in Te Kopuru, Awakino Point, Waihue and Kai Iwi Lakes Road, and there are two to view in Tangowahine. Organiser Shirley Geraghty says, “To make it

easy, ticket packs will include a map, details and a little of the story of each house.” Tickets are on sale at Gloria’s Flowers and Gifts, Walden’s Shoes and Paparoa Drapery, and you can also buy them at Palmers Garden World and Sciadopitys Garden Centre, both in Whangarei. At several homes and at the Anglican Parish Hall there will be light refreshment available to help you on your way. The tour is set to go on 19th November between the hours of 9.30am until 4.45pm. The three Northern Wairoa historic churches, St Peters Te Kopuru, All Saints Mititai and the Anglican Holy Trinity Dargaville will all be open for you to visit.

Insight to Kaipara life How does a life-long city dweller in her middle years ﬁnd ‘love at the end of the road’, particularly when that road threads through the backblocks of New Zealand and winds up at a farm on the Kaipara Harbour? The answer is contained in a soon-be-published book, by Rae Roadley, who lives with her husband and farmer, Rex, at historic Batley House, which dates back to the mid-1800s and in its lifetime played several roles. When there was a wharf on the point it was used as a boarding house and in the 1970s it was a home for solo-parent children. Rex Roadley bought Batley House and the farm from his father and uncle in the 1980s and, together in the 1990s, Rae and Rex began extensive renovations.

Kaiwaka ready for the World Cup Kaiwaka is ‘reddying’ itself for the Rugby World Cup and the anticipated 25,000 people who will travel North. ‘The little town of lights’ is a gateway to Northland and a big red Welcome Centre has been established as part of a Northland-wide campaign. The ‘Paint It Red’ campaign is an initiative that aims to show support for the three international teams that will play pool games in Whangarei. All of the teams — Canada, Tonga and Japan — have red in their strip colours. Twelve leading tourism and community organisations have been chosen to represent Northland at the Welcome Centre, which is the refurbished and upgraded Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall. This has been transformed thanks to volunteer labour and funding from Northland 2011. The Welcome Centre is being promoted through signage on the State Highway 1 and the Ofﬁcial Northland 2011 Passport Scheme. Passport holders are encouraged to embrace the themes of 'Take the Long Way Round' 'Twin Coast Discovery Highway' and 'Paint it Red 2011' by collecting stamps at selected points in the region to win a return trip to Northland. Project co-ordinator, Heidi Dreyer, said the community was enthusiastic about the centre and further projects have popped up around the town. These include a new native garden around the river, with plants donated by Kauri Nurseries, and a walkway under the State Highway One bridge. Economic development manager, Chris Donahoe, attended the opening and adds that a lot of work and community support has gone into the project. “It looks really good, so next time you’re going past go and have a look — there’s already been some great feedback from international travel media. The chairman of the hall committee, Ad Clarijs, has been fantastic and Kaiwaka resident, Wayne Blisset, has been doing a lot of the gardening area. The local cafes have all really helped out too.” The big red Welcome Centre will be staffed by RWC volunteers and is open to the public daily from 8am to 6pm. Tonga plays two Whangarei games; Canada on September 14, and Japan on September 21.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

When the rivers were roads by Paul Campbell There are fascinating glimpses into the lives of the early settlers on the Kaipara contained in the stories of the Albertlanders, who arrived here from the UK in the 1860s and onwards to carve out a life on fertile farms where there was formerly scrub and bush. It was a time too, when roads were imaginary lines upon a map and the harbour and its tributary rivers were the only viable routes in and out of the region. Today, we drive from Ruawai to Dargaville with the muddy Northern Wairoa as constant company. It is largely deserted now, but in the days of the Albertlanders, it was a highway of commerce. It’s perhaps ﬁtting to recall those times, ahead of the publication of Images of Albertland, a collection of more than 120 stunning photographic images taken by pioneer lens man, Harold Marsh. The book will be published in October, in a prelude to the comprehensive 150th anniversary celebrations of early Kaipara settlement at Easter Weekend next year. The Albertland Heritage Centre at Wellsford holds comprehensive

Trading on the highways of yesteryear

archives, and contained therein is the account of a Mr George Nicholson, who wrote that after ‘the ﬁrst desperate times had been weathered, everybody was growing food and had a surplus at times, but it was difﬁcult to get to market. ‘Then almost by accident a market was found up the Wairoa River, where bush was being worked and there were big timber mills. ‘Two of us were taking a barge up to the Kaihu Fibre Works, and Mr G. Plummer put a number of kegs of butter aboard on the offchance of a sale. ‘When the barge got to the mouth of the Kaihu River, at a spot that is now known as Dargaville, she tied up to a wharf. We sold the butter at much better prices than we expected. ‘When the boys got back to Port Albert, the news of the sale soon got about, and the next week a fat beast was killed and the meat taken up the Wairoa in a small sailing boat’.

The trade grew rapidly and very soon there was a large boat running every fortnight. Eventually it took a 10-ton cutter to carry all the produce that the early Port Albert settlers sold to the timber workers on the Wairoa River. To fully appreciate the highways that were provided by the waterways of the Kaipara, spare a thought for a Mr J. Shepherd, who in order to keep his family from starving, walked from his allotted bush property the 28 miles to Mangawhai, got a 50-pound bag of ﬂour, and then carried it every step of the way home. The journey took him two days, spurred on by the thought of his suffering wife and children. It’s certainly a far cry from the swift trip by road to today’s supermarket, and a tale of trial in early Kaipara settlement that will no doubt join many others at next year’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Blossom time in Paparoa

by Joanne Speechly New Community Spaces manager for the Kaipara District Council, Thomas Patterson, is looking forward to working with the many diverse communities, which make up the Kaipara. “I’m originally from Wellington but from the age of ten we lived in rural Waimauku, Muriwai and South Kaipara Helensville, where I attended Kaipara College,” says Thomas. “I have since spent a lot of time up here, with family at Omamari and further north, and I thoroughly enjoy the lifestyle and experiences that the Kaipara offers. Also, my family is very important and my wife and I decided that this is the place where we would like to bring up our three young children. Thomas’ early working life saw him involved in a number of different industries, including farming and horticulture, building, Youthtown and the army. “It was during this time that my interest and passion in sport, recreation and community development was kindled and once the ﬁre Thomas Patterson — looking forward to working with communities was lit there was no going back. New drinking fountains

Over the last six years Mangawhai Beach School has grown by an extra classroom every eighteen months, but unfortunately the number of drinking fountains has not equalled that growth.

Show to get a new date A clash of dates has caused the postponement of The Kauri Chorus show, ‘As Time Goes By’, which was scheduled for September 17 in Dargaville. However, the show organisers have decided to avoid the clash with the Howard Morrison Show at the Town Hall on the same date and ‘As Time Goes By’ will now take place in November. Keep an eye out for the date and venue to be advertised.

Mangawhai Beach School is proud to now have six new blue modern drinking fountains throughout the school enabling each student to get a drink under shelter. This would not have been achieved without the generosity of a sizeable grant from the Pub Charity Inc. and the ingenuity of Tapwaterwells Ltd from Christchurch.

Matakohe School dilemma Matakohe School was flooded with problems recently, after the senior playground became submerged in water. While the drainage could be repaired, winter weather had left the field out-of-bounds, so the concrete area quickly became crowded. Parents and students got to work clearing all the bark but when it came to re-filling the barked area, they were lacking in man power. Luckily the school contacted Kaurilands Skill Centre and Jason Falwasser and John Maber came to the rescue Jason and John toiled on their own all morning until the seniors arrived back from their technology class. Together, they filled the pit and learnt a good lesson in team work.

Urapukapuka Sport and Rec Trip At 06.00 am on Thursday we left the school and headed for Urapukapuka Island! We arrived to Te Uenga Bay, unloaded the bus and the kayaks headed off to Urapukapuka by boat or kayak. We quickly sorted out where we were going to stay, which people in what cabins and then straight into action. We started with some challenge games, a kind of hide and seek, although Sport and Rec style. We learnt heaps on this trip about different ways to fish. How tricky can learning how to present your fish baits properly on your hook be? We had so many experiences. Fishing off the boat was real fun, but we also got to try jigging for kingfish, free diving for crayfish and rock fishing for snapper. One essential is to know how to tie knots properly and Mr Weight is a real expert tutor at this. He also got us out soft bait fishing on the kayaks – this brings new meaning to “don’t rock the boat”. In the evenings we played some games, one called ‘ghosty ghosty’, which I think the teachers thought would scare us, but this only had the desired effect on a few of us. A few of us caught some amazing fish. Stephen Pocklington landed a 28lb kingfish, but Giavanna Pumipi-Hawkings got a real thrill (I think that was the expression on her face) when she landed a monster barracuda. Having Mrs Weight with us on the trip was good in all aspects, the boys were all jealous

‘Nice Day for a War’ Adventures of a Kiwi Solider in World War 1 by Brian Eastwood

Flick casually through the newly published book ‘Nice Day for a War’ and you might think you have picked up a comic book. But take a closer look and you will see that it is an authentic record of the World War One adventures of Te Kopuru man, Cyril Elliott His grandson Matt Elliott has told the tale, with award winning cartoonist Chris Slane as co-author adding an unusual slant with his skilful drawings. Their access to Cyril’s faithfully kept wartime diaries has enabled them to give a realistic insight into the hardships on the Western Front in 1917. They also illustrate the humour that kept the men of New Zealand Riﬂe Brigade going. And little things important in a soldier’s life are told in extraordinary detail, even down to a typical week’s menu. Like many soldiers of those days Cyril was just a boy of eighteen years when he joined up. Taken from historical and family photos, the drawings showing him leaving his boss at the sawmill and saying farewell to his parents at Te Kopuru wharf, have been sensitively done. There are many black and white photos taken in camp and at the Front, but the cartoons in colour add extra realism. Some of the story is told by turning incidents mentioned in Elliott’s diary entries into a comic style depiction of his words and deeds. Lance Corporal Elliott made it back to Auckland on Friday 7th March 1919 and didn’t

hang around. ‘About 7am we proceeded to Queen’s Wharf where we berthed and ran off the ship’. One week later he was back at the mill and lived for many years in the last house on the right overlooking the river in Clean Street, Te Kopuru. If you have wondered what World War One was like for an ordinary bloke from Northern Wairoa, this easy to read book goes a long way towards telling how it really was. Hospital wish list ticks another box Kaipara Community Health Trust’s Dargaville Hospital Wish List has had another wish granted, thanks to a very generous effort from the Dargaville Quilters Club. “One of the items on the Dargaville Hospital Wish List was to make the hospital more child-friendly, so the Dargaville Quilters got involved,” says the health trust’s Deb Evans. “It has taken the quilters about two years to make the quilts — and they are beautiful. “Each quilt block has been designed from children’s books, so they are all fun and bright, and some of the blocks have been used as teaching tools for new members. “Hundreds of hours of work have gone into the quilts and it is all donated time and material — they have just been awesome. The quilts have been designed to go along the top of the windows so when we do have little people staying in hospital, the nurses can just put up the quilts and make the room a little more homely and a little less scary for them.”

RWC ready for kickoff The world’s premier international rugby competition is nearly here and world cup fever is heating up across the country. Every day hundreds of rugby players, coaches, support staff and fans are descending on New Zealand shores as they prepare for the quadrennial tournament. The first RWC was held in New Zealand and Australia in 1987 and New Zealand took the cup home — for the first and last time — after beating France in the final. In the five

tournaments since then, the RWC has been held in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France in 1991, where Australia beat England to take the cup. In 1995, the tournament was played in South Africa, who infamously won against New Zealand, after the All Blacks team fell ill with food poisoning. In 1999, the RWC returned to the UK, Ireland and France, where Australia won the cup after beating France. In 2003, Australia lost the cup to England on home territory. In 2007, the RWC tournament was played in France and the

UK and South Africa again claimed the cup with a win over England. The right to host this year’s world cup was awarded to the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) by the International Rugby Board Council and the 2011 RWC will officially kick off on Friday, September 9, when the All Blacks face Tonga at Auckland’s Eden Park. The final game is also at Eden Park on October 23. The RWC remains the world’s third largest sporting event, with 48 matches, played over 45 days and involving 20 teams. Nine hundred players and support staff will be hosted throughout New Zealand during this time and the 48 matches will be played at 12 venues. Volunteers, international media, catering staff and national and international visitors will together number in the hundreds of thousands. The 2011 RWC tournament will also have an estimated television audience of more than four billion people. The Webb Ellis Cup is the trophy awarded to the winner of the Rugby World Cup and it is named after William Webb Ellis, who is often credited as the inventor of rugby football. The trophy is silver gilt and has been presented to the winner of the Rugby World Cup since the first competition in 1987. The 38-centimetre trophy is gilded silver and is supported by two cast scroll handles. On one handle there is a head of a satyr, on the other there is a head of a nymph. On the face of the trophy are the words International Rugby Football Board and below that arch The Webb Ellis Cup are also engraved. The Webb Ellis Cup is also referred to (incorrectly) as the ‘Webb Ellis Trophy’ or colloquially as ‘Bill’, a nickname coined by the 1991 Rugby World Cup winners, the Wallabies.

There’s something to be said for the mental and physical discipline required to win in top level motocross — as many of our local riders can attest, it’s not easy commanding all that snarling horsepower through kilometres of big air, deep mud and ﬁerce competition! That’s what makes AMA motocross rider Brett Metcalfe’s latest podium victory so impressive — the recent Southwick round of the American series was a battle of the big guns in the sport contested during the throes of a full-scale hurricane! As Hurricane Irene hammered the east coast of the United States it’s fair to say that most sporting events were called off. But the dauntless ﬁeld of riders in the AMA’s 10th round were made of sterner stuff, and despite the morning’s drizzle turning to a biblical torrent by

Men who made Northern Wairoa . . .

William Arthur Marriner by Brian Eastwood Although they worked hard in their business and for the district, you could not say that early Northern Wairoa settler Matthew Marriner or the members of his family always enjoyed good fortune. Marriner arrived in Mangawhare from the Hokianga in 1849, bringing with him his family, including second son William Arthur, then just ten years old. William’s parents sent him to Wesley College for an academic education but he then decided to go to sea as his ‘ﬁnishing’ school. He wandered for ﬁve years, eventually becoming second mate of the barque ‘Sygnet’. Returning home to Mangawhare, he took over management of the trading store owned by Hasting Atkins, the protégé of Sir Logan Campbell. Atkins retired in 1862 and went back to Europe, gifting the store to Campbell. Marriner stayed on as Mangawhare manager for Brown and Campbell until 1879 when he leased a large block of gum land in Port Albert for one year. Home again, he built a store in Mangawhare, leased Government land near Mangonui Bluff and set up branch stores. When that lease ran out he leased gum digging rights on A. E. Harding’s Aoroa block.

In the meantime Marriner had married, but his wife Emily nee Boult from Whangarei, died after being thrown from a horse. She left him with three sons. Disaster had struck the Mt. Wesley kauri gum trading business of Matthew Marriner just before Christmas 1866 when his station burned down, taking all the gum with it. Coincidentally in 1875, the same fate awaited Brown and Campbell’s store that Marriner managed. Even more coincidentally in 1903, the late William Marriner’s store in Mt Wesley also burned to the ground, taking all of the gum stock as well as his special collection of gum specimens. All told it was valued at £2000 but insured only for £400. £500 worth had been packed ready for S. S. Aotea to pick up the next day. Their ruined store at the end of Mt Wesley Coast Road on the river-bank, traded in gum, fungus, produce and general goods. It was managed by his son, L. B. Marriner, who became a Dargaville Borough Councillor for one year. In 1872 William married Mary Douglas, the daughter of settler William Douglas. It was a large wedding, starting with the bridegroom’s party arriving from Dargaville by launch. There

were many toasts proposed, including one from local chief Te Awha Parore, a close friend of William Marriner. 250 people cheering and performing a haka greeted the couple’s arrival back in Mangawhare, with an evening dance completing the day’s festivities. Mary and William were to have four sons and just one daughter but lost her to diphtheria in 1884. Mary died in 1895 and William retired that same year to become ofﬁcial Maori interpreter for the district. Marriner always declined political nomination but was active as secretary and treasurer of Mangawhare Cricket Club and served on the regatta committee. He was elected a member of the racing club committee as a judge and manager of the annual race meetings. Two of William and Mary’s sons were twins and went off to the 1915 Gallipoli campaign where strangely, both were wounded in the left foot. Charles survived but Percy was later killed in action in France. William never knew the fate of his two boys because he died suddenly in 1902 at the age of 62 years. He lies buried in Mt Wesley just three hundred metres from his old home.

Ruawai Primary celebrated Daffodil Day by asking the children to wear mufti for the day in yellow and green, with a donation of a gold coin for the privilege. A Body Jam demonstration was held in the afternoon with visitors also donating a gold coin as an entry fee. A total of $179.50 was raised, going to the Cancer Society. The photo is taken in front of the school’s daffodil garden which was planted by students of the school several years ago in memory of former teacher, Nellie Yelcich, who passed away from cancer.
