Makalah Stevens from New World Foxton won the lower North Island Butcher Apprentice category

At the lower North Island competition, butchers were asked to break down a size 20 chicken, a beef sirloin and a pork shoulder, turning the cuts into a display of value-added products within two hours. The competition was held at the WelTec School of Hospitality in Wellington. Proving the best on the day was Kieran Horsefield from New World Greenmeadows winning the Butcher of the Year category. Makalah Stevens from New World Foxton took first place in the Butcher Apprentice category. Kieran and Makalah’s skills will soon be put to the test at the Grand Final, competing against winners from the South Island and upper North Island regional competitions. For the first time, fully qualified butchers of all ages have been able to enter the competition. Previously only

entrants who were fully qualified and 30 years or under were invited to enter the Alto Butcher category, while those who are still completing an apprenticeship fall under the Competenz Butcher Apprentice Category. This category now has an open age entry too. The cutting test involves breaking down and displaying different cuts of meat. Contestants will have to undertake the same cutting process at the regional and Grand Final contests. The Grand Final will also include an interview and exam for the Apprentice Butcher of the Year finalists. The Grand Final will be held at Shed 10 in Auckland on August 31, where ten finalists in each category will battle it out to be named New Zealand’s top Butcher and Butcher Apprentice of the Year for 2017.

Intensive farming rules reviewed Following the Environmental Court’s decision on Environmental Defence Society (EDS) and Wellington Fish and Game’s declaratory proceedings against Horizons Regional Council, the council suspended any new intensive land use consent applications for a 12-week period. As this period draws to a close, Horizons strategy and policy group manager Dr Nic Peet said good progress is being made. “We are preparing new application forms and guidance material for applicants seeking intensive land use consents under the One Plan.” It is expected that this revised material, designed to give effect to the court’s decisions, will be available in late July or early August. Dr Peet said working through the implications of the declarations has raised some really complex issues around things such as assessing the impact of individual farming operations on overall water quality. “Our priority is to provide the best guidance that we are able to for consent applicants. “In the meantime, council notes that there is no formal moratorium on consenting intensive land uses so if a farmer applies for a consent, Horizons would need to process it. “However our suggestion is that farmers will benefit from the guidance material that council is producing in preparing an application.” “We will continue to monitor consents already granted under the intensive land use rules,” he said. Horizons chief executive Michael McCartney

said evaluation of the One Plan and the court process has revealed a number of weaknesses in the current plan which council will need to address when considering the implementation of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. “This is unsurprising for a plan that started its development back in 2005.” Mr McCartney said knowledge, policy and scientific approaches have progressed in the intervening years. “We recognise that the proceedings have caused disruption to a number of farmers looking to get consents in place and we appreciate their patience as we work to get this right for the betterment

When Peter and Stephanie Shirnack were first introduced to alpacas at the Central Districts Field Days, they were charmed by these inquisitive creatures.

onsultation with several breeders followed before they took the plunge, joined the Alpaca Association New Zealand and bought two wethers in 2007. Although the initial plan was to have a couple of alpacas to graze the paddocks on their lifestyle property near Feilding, that number soon increased to five wethers. Peter said after researching into the economics of breeding alpacas, he and Stephanie purchased two pregnant females the following year. “From there the herd has grown and the quality has improved.” Current alpaca numbers, which now total 17, include 11 breeding females, three stud males, and three wethers kept for their fleece. The three stud males are available for stud services. “Every year we will have surplus stock for sale, mainly males,” said Stephanie. As small breeders, they’ve discovered finding the right stud male to enhance the characteristics of their female alpacas can be difficult. “Alpacas have only a single cria a year,” said Stephanie.

“Therefore it is a slow process to see the results you are trying to achieve.” Although the Shirnack’s predominantly breed Huacaya alpacas on their Bonnack Grove Stud, there are also a few Suris. “We do have Suri on-site for their fleece, and to show the difference between the two alpaca types,” said Stephanie. Softer, warmer and with more tensile strength than wool, alpaca fleece comes in 22 natural shades. Although the Huacaya fibre is similar to that of Merino sheep, its softness makes it ideal for knitted and woven products. Suris represent between five to ten percent of alpacas worldwide and the fibre is known for its distinctive lustre. The fleece is predominantly used for weaving into high-end garments. Peter and Stephanie breed fine, coloured alpacas and the fibre is used to produce wool and garments. Their aim is to breed a consistent fine fleece. When their shearing contractor retired, the Shirnack’s picked up a handpiece and learnt to shear their alpacas. Shearing takes place between October and November. “We take the fibre from the animal through the various stages of processing to the final product,” said Stephanie. “This includes cleaning, carding, spinning of the fibre, then knitting and weaving the wool.” The couple have found alpacas friendly, easy-care, inquisitive animals that are a pleasure to be around. And they take delight in seeing the results from their calculated breeding

programme, improving the qualities of the female alpacas, and watching the young crias frolicking around the paddocks. Halter training starts when the crias reach six months of age. During this process crias are handled, taught to lead and become accustomed to being around people. “They are gentle on the ground and use the pasture more efficiently than sheep,” said Peter. “Alpacas can be run with standard farm fencing — they require no special shelter other than shade to get out of the heat of summer.” The herd is checked daily to ensure all is well. Peter said hay, fed out all-year-round, helps provide the dry material needed to balance the alpacas’ digestion. “Depending on the growing season determines if we produce the hay or not ourselves.” From small beginnings when first venturing into the showring, the Shirnack’s alpacas are now consistently winning championships throughout the North Island. They recently won their first two supreme championships. The couple plan to continue enhancing the fleece and its characteristics, then use that fleece to produce quality products. “We welcome visitors to come and enjoy being up close and amongst these wonderful alpacas,” said Peter. “To arrange a visit go to www. bonnackgrovealpacas.com for contact details.”

My father was in the service industry and would take us children to open the gates for him to the farms. I never thought I would end up farming myself.” Wendy is a twin, and one of eight siblings who all helped their father on his runs. “From there I applied to do my nursing in Timaru hospital and was

accepted. Then my boyfriend at the time was moving home to his parents’ farm at Kaharoa, so I transferred to Queen Elizabeth hospital in Rotorua and did my enrolled nursing and here Rusty and I are, 45 years later, on the home farm. “When I was younger I didn’t aspire to be a farmer. I was encouraged to do a lot of the dirty jobs such as lifting the lambs and holding them whilst they were docked and I earmarked them. I worked in the wool shed where you not

I was taught to put a post in so I knew how to do it, with our three little girls trailing behind and then a son — it was a neat lifestyle. “I joined RWNZ along with a group of younger women in the district — they were all incredible. As a national organisation they were looking after our health and education, getting school buses for the areas, and keeping schools open and organising things like getting breast screening done. “It was amazing to be with the older generation. Last year, RWNZ turned 96 years old and I was reading back on the history. In one year they had 139 submissions presented to government. They were all things I take for granted today. “When you look back you realise how wonderful they were, why did they hide it, why didn’t they celebrate everything they did? “I encourage other wives to join an organisation and get together. There are times in your life where you need to be together. In our case, in one year our income dropped down to a quarter. Things happen and if you are on your own, it is insurmountable — all you can see is how high up others are, but if you meet up with others, you eat cake, have a cup of tea, bitch about how bad life is, but you go home feeling better — that’s women — we need that. “RWNZ put on a day for the ladies affected by PSA in kiwifruit and 180 women turned up. “One day they had an income, the next day they didn’t — in times like that, is where RWNZ steps up. “We get ladies together and then we step away and let them get on with their

Wendy has always helped in the wool shed, and does numerous other jobs on the farm lives. When an adverse event or disease happens, you need to be mindful that people need each other. “RWNZ isn’t joining an old girls club that are in their 60s like me, it is about helping get people started and us being mentors and encouraging others. “I have nine grandchildren and during my time with Federated Farmers, I was flying backwards and forwards to Wellington for 18 years. As each grandchild was expected I started a project for them and now I am finishing those projects. “The eldest is 20 years old and the youngest is seven months. “I am giving myself a little break this year and will finish my projects so they can have them for their children. SMOKE ALARMS Save Lives BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A debilitatand other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat ing condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*

CARBON LOCKUP

1 tree

=

1 sheep

Planting forests is a simple and effective way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, while at the same time creating a financial investment for the future. Trees take surplus carbon out of the atmosphere and turn it in to wood. Just one 20 year old Pinus radiata tree will lock up all the carbon a single sheep will have emitted in its entire lifetime. One tree would also lock up all the carbon emitted by one beef animal in one year and 1.5 trees will capture a dairy cow’s emissions in one year. New Zealand foresters plant more than 50 million trees a year.

Natural immunity, key to health by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

Here at Agrissentials, the game plan is increasing as more producers look seriously at moving towards Organx™ production and BioGro certification. Each farm will have its own independent auditor to help them through to full certification, within a 3 year period, with an estimated annual audit cost of around $1,800.00 (eighteen hundred dollars). Making the move away from “agrochemical” production and back to “traditional farming” will encourage you and your family to feel strong about operating a “certified” farming system. multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, bringing health and vitality back to soils. Over the past 33 years I have committed my working life to improving the health and vitality of soils. I need to take this opportunity forward. I need to build a soil driven culture surrounded by integrity, determination, innovation, persistence and responsibility. The challenge is to bring the soil back to life. To manage the soil by attaching the farmers personal meaning of soil to a higher purpose, for the farmer to become a steward of this ”soil-culture”, to lift the game, to make him the best farmer in the world! Top soil is sacred, the more we care and look after it, the more wealth it will return to us. For the past 60 odd years we have been bombarding our soils with synthetic nitrates, phosphates and a plethora of synthetic toxic chemicals. The chemical age has been detrimental to all life upon the planet and also in the sea, rivers, lakes and streams. The situation is reversible, but we need to work on it now! In late 2015, the Australian Grain Board, a government department made a statement that they were leaving the “chemical age” in an endeavour to increase falling production and to increase the quality of the grain. From my perspective, having worked on both sides of the fence I learnt early

that chemicals don’t work and in reality create their own market — A major chemical producer has admitted that they have run out of chemicals to fight pest and disease. This shows just how strong Mother Nature is, with pest and disease becoming immune to toxic chemical sprays. Agrissentials are producing a BioGro certified natural sea based product ET250, to repel pests, disease and other bugs. There is no point in trying to eradicate pest and disease, as they are part of Mother Nature’s system. ET250 is designed to chase those problems out of the orchard and it’s working. Better than that, if you are using a multi-mineral fertiliser like RokSolid or Oceans 100, packed with minerals, the plant will fix its own immunity to pests, disease and bugs. The “chemical-cowboys” have made a fortune from their toxic chemicals, without any thought about the ramifications of their products on plants, animals, birds, bees, rivers, soils, food and ultimately humans. This is the real problem! Call us today on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. Giving back to nature

Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for

ew Plymouth info Palmerston Nth info t Napier info

boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

Weeds head for the hills Scientists are warning that alpine plants are at risk of extinction as climate change, skiing and mountain tourism spread weeds to higher altitudes.

Professor Philip Hulme of the Bio-Protection Research Centre, Lincoln University

The latest research shows that as temperatures have risen, plants have spread up mountainsides, with weeds being the fastest movers, spreading to higher altitudes twice as fast as native plants. “We know native plants are moving up mountains as climate warms, but until now no-one had looked at how non-native weeds might respond,” says Professor Philip Hulme of the Bio-Protection Research Centre, Lincoln University. The international team of researchers discovered that weeds quickly outpaced other plants. It seems that roads are amongst the culprits, with traffic helping to transport seeds further. “These findings should raise concerns for New Zealand’s unique alpine environments. “I suspect the situation is possibly more dire in New Zealand given that our lowland regions are far more invaded by non-native weeds than similar regions in Europe. Our montane (mountain ecosystems) regions are coming under

increasing pressure from tourism, skiing developments and other infrastructure such as roads.” The research, published in Nature Climate Change, used more than 130,000 records of 1334 plant species collected over 20 years in a single region of the European Alps. “The challenge for New Zealand is that we are no longer collecting the systematic, long-term data on how our flora are changing in these environments,” he says “Such data are essential if we want to keep our glorious mountain landscapes free of weeds such as gorse, broom and wilding pines. The authors of the study point out that such rapid spread into vulnerable habitats is a further threat to species already stressed by higher temperatures. “We must take action soon otherwise our native alpine plant communities are likely to suffer dramatic changes with ongoing warming and increasing human activity in mountain regions.”

Therapy for osteoarthritis Part 2 Nutritional therapy can be effective in helping osteoarthritis. For example I have been helping someone with osteoarthritis (OA) in one knee which affected her mobility. She also had hypertension and swollen ankles from poor lower leg circulation. We used a combination of therapies to target all the problems. We added my joint supplement at a double dose delivering 1500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate with the same of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a proprietary 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). To this we added 6000mg of Omega 3 fish oil and a bullet blender recipe I have developed to assist circulation to help her swollen ankles. This included raw beetroot to dilate blood vessels. The result is that after three months the pain has reduced by about 50% and her ankles are less swollen. I expect these improvements to continue. High levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) are important as it is a major constituent of cartilage. At therapeutic levels this can help with cartilage function and has antiinflammatory activity.

Studies, including J P Pelletier (Arthritis Research and Therapy, 2016) demonstrate that chondroitin sulphate at high levels has the ability to modify joints affected by osteoarthritis. In particular there was a marked reduction in further cartilage loss with overall joint improvement. There are several ways CS can improve arthritic joints. Firstly it seems to inhibit a number of inflammatory compounds that are associated with OA. The second is previously mentioned reductions in cartilage loss. The third is even more promising. According to research by Y Herotin (2010) CS appears to stimulate the chondrocyte cells that produce cartilage. High levels of CS seem to increase the collagen needed to make the cartilage matrix. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula What is Bettaflex? • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

How can Bettaflex help?

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage.

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.”

The best building site for a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun, particularly from the north, and is sheltered from prevailing winds so the choice of a section is the first step towards a warm home. You can easily find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square-metre of unshaded north-facing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas with service areas on the south side. Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass — like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night. Select appropriately sized and positioned windows — moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side. Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day You basis. can Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy. The more complex a home’s shapefor is, the more your

floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Simple house designs — for example compact rectangular shapes and multi-level homes — have less external surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm. Good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills. The important factors are: high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor, well in excess of minimum building code requirements. If you have wooden floors an extra level of thermal mass can be added by pouring 50mm or more of concrete on top of the wood. Check with your architect or builder to see if your floors are suitable for this option. Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system as energy efficient as possible. There are lots of log burners, pellet fires, heat pumps and flued gas heaters on the market, either as central heating systems or as individual heaters to heat areas of your house. You can

Forms of shelter also include native bush, dairy or drystock sheds, artificial windbreaks and feed pads. Farm animals in New Zealand can be grazed outside all year-round but they still need shelter. New-born calves and lambs as well as recently shorn sheep are the most vulnerable to hypothermia. Providing protection for flocks reduces abortions and lamb losses from hypothermia and helps reduce stress on heavily pregnant animals. Ewes prefer to lamb in isolation from the flock and will seek out shelter. Cattle appreciate being able to escape from the sun, wind and rain and this can improve milk production and conception rates in dairy cows, and the growth rate in fattening cattle. Dairy shelters house and feed stock and are used in winter and spring to keep cows off the pasture for all day or part of the day. In summer these buildings are ideal to stop the animals getting too hot. The benefits of sheltering animals include needing less feed to maintain physical condition and their winter growth rates improve.

Implementing the correct type of structure on your farm is essential for helping your stock to not only survive, but thrive. Shelter from warmer weather can increase milk production and improve conception rates in dairy cows, as well as the fattening growth rate in beef cattle. Feed pads enable stock to be housed and fed under cover, removing animals from pasture for a few hours each day. This helps to reduce overgrazing and trampling of soil and pasture which can slow down grass growth. In summer, feed pads help to reduce heat stress as mentioned above. Feed pads allow a more accurate allocation of feed to stock, resulting in faster growth of yearlings. For farm equipment, it is advisable to have lockable sheds to protect machinery and equipment from weather damage and those would be thieves that enter a property to steal farm machinery, motorbikes, petrol and other goods stored on farms. Having such items out of sight can help deter thieves. Buildings are a valuable investment on any property, regardless of whether it is a lifestyle block, large livestock or horticultural operation.

Calf care regulations

New regulations for young calves have been introduced by the Ministry for Primary Industries. The regulations affect any farmer who sends calves off farm for sale or slaughter, transport operators, and meat processors of young calves. It takes a team effort to ensure all calves are treated with care and respect from birth to beyond the farm gate. And if farmers are not prepared and do not comply with regulations, they could either face fines or will not be able to transport calves off-farm. The regulations include young calves must be slaughtered as soon as possible after arrival at the slaughter premises. The maximum time a calf can be off feed is 24 hours. Loading and unloading facilities must be provided when young calves are transported for sale or slaughter. This means that calves can walk onto and off vehicles by their own action. Transporters must also take all reasonable steps to use these facilities. Suitable shelter must be provided for young calves before, during and after transportation.

DairyNZ have a new ‘Fit for transport’ poster available for the calf shed which can be downloaded from their website. This provides a visual reminder and checklist at the point of bobby calf selection of the eight criteria that calves must meet before they are selected for transport off-farm. There is also a new ‘collection sign’ for bobby calf pens available for farmers and transporters to use. The sign will help ensure all calves are fit for transport and provide a simple way for farmers and calf collectors to communicate regularly. Calves must physically fit for transport and be at least four days of age (96 hours) before they are transported offfarm for sale or slaughter. This applies to any young calf that is up to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. There is to be no use of blunt

force to the head for putting down calves, except in an emergency situation to avoid unnecessary suffering. This applies to any calf that has not been weaned off milk, or a milk replacement. There is a maximum duration of 12 hours’ journey time for young calves being transported. This applies to any young calf that is up

to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. The prohibition on transport by sea across Cook Strait applies to any young calf that is up to 14 days old and has been separated from its mother. Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Animal health problems Last year, a farmer asked me if I would help his mate up the road. His friend had started with 500 cows to calve, and with peak was called in to help, we went through milking soon to begin, he now had a little over 460 with which to the key areas, looking for causes for the complete the season. herd’s poor health. Twenty-two cows had died from metabolic problems, 63 had clinical milk fever, and some had aborted. He was losing milking profit and spending more on medical bills. Before I talk about the cause of his problem, I’d like to talk about the farmer’s profit window. September to December is the period where milk production is at its maximum. It’s when most of the money is made. Because of this, farmers should be gearing up to take maximum advantage of it. Ideally, in that profit window, a farmer wants each of his cows to be producing 2.2kgms/day from September to December. But getting an animal to hit the magical 2.2kgms/day depends entirely on the condition they arrive in at the time of milking. That means preparing cows to be in peak health at the start — so that they can maintain good condition throughout the calving, milking and mating periods. Preconditioning is the transitioning period of four weeks prior to calving. The goal is to bring animals up to a 5.0 level of conditioning and this is achieved through a careful combination of diet, trace elements, and supplements. Will a farmer need to spend money to get animals up to a 5.0 condition? Yes, but spending here will be rewarded in two ways: 1. with increased milk production 2. with reduced health problems and naturally better mating results. Think of preconditioning as

SAFETY FIRST

an investment: you spend money to make more money. If a cow comes into calving with an average to low condition level, she will calve in a tired state. This state will drop further as she expends energy and resources to cope with calving. In her tired state, she may have difficulty pushing out her calf due to low muscle strength. With her immunity levels compromised, she is more susceptible to metabolic sickness. But even if the cow avoids illness, her reduced conditioning means she has less energy to give to milk production. The farmer may even have to milk her less to avoid making her weaker. In the case of my farmer, that scenario was true of all 500 cows. None had a hope of reaching 2.2kgms/day. If a cow comes into calving with an elevated level of conditioning (5.0), she will be able to calve with relative ease. With strong muscles and high energy levels, she can push out the calf without compromising her own health. That means she can immediately produce 2.2kgms/day straight after calving. Being healthy, the cow also possesses a strong appetite. Her desire to continually feed enables her to maintain good conditioning throughout the Profit Window and beyond and is far less susceptible to sickness. What was the problem with our farmer? When the Forward Farming team

ON THE FARM

Calf Rearing

The management plan was sound. The feed balance was good. The problem was in the feed quality, or more precisely, the soil from where the feed came. Our soil test revealed several key problems that accounted for the poor animal health: nitrogen levels were far too high. One effect would have been the suppression of calcium in the soil which had left magnesium too high and out of balance with calcium. Sodium was also too high in relation to potassium. If I had seen these soil readings without first knowing the herd’s condition, I would have deduced that their health was compromised. This soil/feed nutritional imbalance was only ever going to hurt these cows! If you feel you are interested in unlocking more of your farm’s potential and maybe an answer to your frustrations and questions we can help with the big picture.

Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Save dollars and make sense Local farmers are continuing to show strong interest in adding Kiwi designed and developed UBCO 2x2 Electric two-wheelers to their fleet. Electric Bike’s Palmerston North owner Kelvin Tong says that whilst UBCO’s are not designed for steep hill county, they have proven their worth especially for dairy, cropping, horticultural and livestock units on our flat to rolling hinterland. Tong says that local UBCO owners often enjoy zero fuel costs, due to being on bulk power rates. Unlike conventional petrol powered two-wheelers — due to less running gear and the simplicity of its design — an UBCO’s purchase price of $6,999 incl GST quickly reduces because of its low running and servicing costs. Tong remarks: “If you do your sums, simply on fuel, a 60cent charge equates to 80kms cross-country work.” Like any two-wheeler, UBCO’s have their limitations, but owners say that they play an important role in their farm production. With the UBCO’s 80 to 100km range, farmers move silently, not having to shout over the persistent

Big Als

thump of engine noise, or upseting or stressing their livestock. The UBCO’s two 1 Kilowatt front and rear drives provide plenty of torque and have no problem with catching up with runaway stock. The 2x2 drive also provides exceptional traction, stability and safety when off road, more so than conventional rear drive two-wheelers. UBCO’s are also much lighter, meaning they are easier to power out of bog if they get stuck or more able to be thrown on the back of a ute or in the bucket of the digger. No problem with them lying flat, no fuel to flood or spill, no hot exhaust to singe you or set things alight. Farmers also remark that UBCO’s low handle bar configuration and shorter wheel base means easy onboard rider access to gates, without dismounting. Others remark that there is no hard kick starting or engines flooding to hold them up. It’s just a simple task of ‘switch on — twist the throttle and go’.

Kelvin says that the main complaint from UBCO owners is that they get annoyed with other farmhands nicking off “their” UBCO. They often end up buying their second UBCO in fairly short order. Whilst availability of UBCO’s is not a problem yet, big orders from the USA are now being shipped. From what Kelvin observes, UBCO is now identified as a NZ icon and is a rapidly growing company with massive international demand emerging. UBCO is a great example of Kiwi “can do” mentality and just like Rocket Lab or Weta Digital, here are Kiwi’s listening to farmers, then designing,

We Buy Old and Used Motor Bikes and Quads

developing and exporting advanced agricultural machinery. Tong remarks that UBCO’s have proven their worth and he encourages our farming community to grab one for themselves. In doing so, the bike will not only do a great job but also farmers will be backing a great, rapidly growing, rural serving Kiwi company as well. Perhaps most importantly, UBCO takes user feedback and suggestions seriously, meaning that all UBCO owners play a role in the bike’s future developments For those seriously considering purchasing an UBCO, demonstrators are available. Ready for anything by Andy Bryenton

The venerable Yamaha AG 125 has been a common sight on Kiwi farms for so long now that it’s almost part of the scenery. Simple, easy to maintain and able to take a lot of good-natured punishment, the little blue machine is easy to compare to other hard-wearing rural classics like the swanndri and the gumboot. As an upshot, there’s a whole generation out there who know how to ride an AG 125. Many kids from farming families would have mastered the diminutive single-cylinder bike with its distinctive knobbly tyres well before it was time to learn to drive the family car. And that means there’s a huge crossover market for Yamaha’s street-ready version of the Ag 125 — the YTZ125. Really, it’s just common sense. Adding the necessary bits and pieces to allow a number plate and road legal status was a snap for Yamaha, who after all have a stable of road bikes ranging from the commuter practical to the blisteringly fast. And there are numerous times when zipping down from the homestead to the local shops, around to the neighbours, or indeed down the highway to another block of grazing land is on the cards.

The YTZ125 allows, if nothing else, the ability to do this without changing vehicles. But there’s more to this machine than just convenience. With the same 125cc of power from an air cooled four stroke single cylinder motor, the same terrain-busting ride height and suspension, and a similar feel to the AG 125, the YTZ125 inspires on road confidence and still allows dirt-trail and paddock work. Perhaps like nothing else, this machine bridges the gap between two worlds of motorcycling — that of the serious workhorse and that of riding for the sheer pleasure of it. Coming out of a heritage of real farm endurance — the YTZ has been extensively put through its paces in the South Island back blocks — there’s nimble balance and lightweight handling here which fosters confidence.

Cross purposes — the Yamaha YTZ125 can handle the farm, the highway or the trail with equal ease

Those who have experienced the open road as well as the trail may very well be tempted to look at Yamaha’s other offerings — a selection which will have true petrol heads salivating.

In the meantime, the learner approved, farm tested YTZ125 offers practicality as well as a taste of the ‘other side’ of motorcycling — and all for a very neat price.
