Taranaki and Manawatu Farming Lifestyles feature writer Denise Gunn has been recognised at the Community Newspaper Awards for her industry insights and interesting yarns
Mrs Gunn was awarded Best Junior Feature/Lifestyle Journalist Class one in the Community Newspaper Awards held in Rotorua. Her colleague, Ann van Engelen of Integrity’s sister masthead Northern Farming Lifestyles, also was a winner for her array of subject matter including stories on ‘bananas, llamas, wearable art and more’. “My general manager, Deb Wright, contacted me and told me I had won,” said Mrs Gunn. “It was a complete surprise, and I was in total disbelief. I had forgotten I had entered and I would like to congratulate all the other placegetters and entrants too.” Mrs Gunn says taking out an award is encouraging and “helps me realise that as a writer I am actually contributing stories that readers enjoy. “I have always enjoyed writing and started out as a journalist for the Manawatu Standard. “When the Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles started arriving in our letterbox, I thought the paper had
potential and phoned the managing director, Allan Mortensen, to see if they needed a reporter on the ground down here. “He offered me a job, and the team at Integrity Community Media has been very supportive and encouraging along the way. “I enjoy finding out about different farming operations and rural lifestyles, as well as writing about a variety of topics. I am always on the lookout for new and interesting subjects around the Taranaki and Manawatu rural communities. Living rurally in the region keeps me connected to local happenings and able to interact on many levels.” Integrity Community Media managing director, Allan Mortensen, says he is extremely proud of his staff members’ accomplishments. “In spite of all the naysayers, print media is extremely strong in this day and age. The reason for the success of our publications is because we have highly-trained and passionate journalists like Denise who create content that people want to read.”
HUGHES GLASS Specialists in Radiata pine is our most popular plantation species. With good reason. It grows faster in New Zealand than in its native California. Some forests have been harvested five times and are growing better than ever. As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

Deer velvet looking good Long-term prospects for New Zealand velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive with an explosion in demand for consumer-ready velvet-based products in Korea. “Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths. “In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet. “Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China. “The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way.” To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on the pathway to market. This report will

be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed. “In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.” A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to

have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations. “A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

ince then, Gary and his wife Steph have spent the majority of their lives dedicated to producing and selling the freshest cherries direct to customers all over New Zealand. Recently they launched their own brand of cherry juice, which they created to share the health benefits of their muchloved fruit. “Dad grew up here in Blenheim and was always involved in cherries as that is where he first started work and he learnt on the job. We planted our own orchard here 10 years ago because it is a good growing region,” said their son and general manager, Cameron.
“Cherries grow really well in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough or Central Otago due to the very cold winters and hot, dry summers — but there are a few orchards in other places. “We love working with the fruit because it is such a seasonal product, they are a flavoursome healthy treat that are only around for eight weeks of the year, and people enjoy giving and receiving them, especially as a Christmas gift.” The family grow approximately nine varieties of sweet cherries. “They all ripen at different times during the season. before Christmas, and the late ones stretch our harvesting season out. They all have slightly different tastes, colours, sizes and shapes and it is very difficult to tell the difference.” The family have planted nearly 20,000 trees on their 70 acre property. “It is a sizeable orchard and takes a lot of work to maintain. We follow strict pest control programmes that are used only when necessary to deter bugs,” says Cameron. “For years we noticed the health benefits of cherries at the start of each season because our sleeping patterns would significantly improve — but we would then slip back into restless nights when the season finished. “We could only make use of the fruit for those eight weeks of the year, and we wanted to work out a way to get people their cherry fix all year-round, so we started research to create the cherry juice.” It took the family three years to develop their product. Cameron’s siblings, Renee and Jacob, are also involved in the business, and they receive emails daily from customers saying they sleep better or get relief from gout and arthritis. It is used in cooking, pouring over ice cream, in salad dressings and as a health tonic. “It could have been perfected quicker if we added chemical agents and preservatives but we took the time to produce a 100 per cent natural product. We had great support from other New Zealand business owners who were pretty open with their advice.
“Research shows that sweet cherries grown in New Zealand are a natural source of melatonin — more than 30 times higher than other varieties. This hormone is necessary for not just sending you to sleep, but also helping you stay asleep. “The fruit also contains extremely high levels of anthocyanins, which have powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Michigan State University research found ‘the anthocyanins that make cherries red could also help relieve pain more effectively than aspirin’ and they may reduce osteoarthritis by working directly on inflammation, through the positive effects of anthocyanins.” A study by the Boston University Medical Centre found that ‘cherry intake was associated with a 50 per cent lower risk of gout flares over a 48-hour period’ due to lowering uric acid levels. “Every weekend our family sell juice at different markets all over New Zealand and let people taste the product. Many of our customers, including farmers, have seen beneficial results with as little as 50ml of juice per night. For severe conditions, we recommend increasing the daily intake to 100ml and you can also just drink it every day. “We have 10 months between cherry seasons, and are constantly learning about other potential products. There are not many cherry by-products available and we source fruit from other growers. The more we can produce the better it is for all growers as we are helping each other.

“Naturopathy is about treating the cause of problems, not just the symptoms. We aim to get people’s health back on track quickly with a clear treatment plan and support. We are members of the NZ Society of Naturopaths Inc and have access to a large group of technical advisers and support networks to provide first-rate health assistance. “Our appointments by videolink are proving very popular with families unable to get into the clinic. Herbal treatments have been used for more than 2,000 years and are still the number one treatment for more than 70 per cent of the world’s population because they work.” Amanda and Libby regularly attend seminars to keep updated with new products, treatments and

current technologies. “Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, naturopathic treatments have no side effects and are safe to use alongside prescription medicines if prescribed by your naturopath,” says Amanda. “I trained as a nurse and was giving out drugs left, right and centre. Each medication had additional medications to counteract side effects. It didn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t until I experienced this for myself that I realised how shocking it was. Through research, I decided to retrain in natural therapies. “I had an overweight client on blood pressure medication and was sick for the five years involved. She has lost 15 kilos, is feeling incredible, and is transitioning off her meds as she no longer requires them. “The proof is in the pudding with natural therapies. We get people bursting into tears because it is so easy to feel healthy again and they wonder why they haven’t been shown this way before.” The pressure many farmers are under is intense, and their ailments vary including migraines and digestive issues, but the cause is often stress. “We love working with farmers because animal care is their number one priority; however, they often forget about their own needs. “Years ago my friend’s garage was full of supplements including magnesium, iron, and molasses for her horses. She

came to me for health advice, and it was clear from her deficiencies that she required exactly what she was giving her animals. She hadn’t realised that she also needed nutritional care.” Environmental situations including drought, too much rain, and diseases coming through the farm can cause problems not only to the animals but to their carers. “We offer natural and effective support to look after our humans as well as their animals,” says Amanda. New clients can make an appointment and fill out a health questionnaire on the orangehealth.co.nz website. “Once the completed questionnaire/ health profile is received we start with a
phone or video call. The questions help us gather information and see the whole picture of issues that can cause illness and request blood tests if required.” Treatment often begins with a specifically designed herbal formula to assist the immune and digestive systems and support the side effects of stress both in and on the body. “An old name for natural medicine was folk medicine, based on various plants and their healing qualities. “One doctor wrote that his use of natural medicine came from watching animals. He visited an alpine village where people were strong and robust into their 80s. After observing their natural lifestyle
and remedies, he retrained as a naturopath and herbalist. He learnt not to sleep with windows open on cold nights because you need to breathe warm air to avoid getting sick. “He watched chickens tuck their beak under their wing to sleep and keep a natural temperature balance — it all makes sense. Hay fever, anxiety, depression, palpitations, insomnia, headaches, mood swings, and fatigue, boils, rashes, aches and joint stiffness can be treated naturally. “We can help with allergies, arthritis, immune disorders, asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, bloating and constipation, PMT, menopause, infertility and fibroids,” says Amanda. “Pre-conception and post-natal care, high and low blood pressure, high cholesterol, varicose veins, glue ear, ADHD, and all childhood conditions. “Balancing weight, diabetes and blood sugars, detoxification of the liver and bowel, presence of heavy metals and much more are within our care. “At times the issues you have may be a side effect of something else going on in your system. Natural therapies are a positive way to improve your health and well-being.” Contact Orange Health info@ orangehealth.co.nz or visit the website for more information orangehealth.co.nz

Researching towards a sutainale dairy sectr by Denise Gunn
Since graduating from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Kieran McCahon has moved to Hamilton to further his studies. Under a DairyNZ Masters Scholarship, Kieran is working towards a Masters in management majoring in agribusiness, through the University of Waikato.
K
ieran grew up on his parents’ 1,000-cow dairy farm on the west coast of the Pouto Peninsula near Dargaville. “The farm is approximately 780ha consisting of two adjacent dairy platforms and an adjoining dairy-beef/ dairy support block,” said Kieran. All through secondary school, Kieran intended to study engineering, selecting his subject choices accordingly. However, towards the end of year 13, he decided to study agricultural science. “There are two main things that attracted me to agriculture; the lifestyle, and the ability to make a significant difference,” said Kieran. “Science excites me; the ability to critically analyse a problem, then develop and test solutions.”
Kieran said this led him to undertake his Master’s research. His thesis is focussing on the biophysical, economic and environmental outcomes of the Reducing Reliance on Imported Feed trial that has been conducted on the Northland Agricultural Research Farm over the past three years. “To be able to apply this curiosity in my daily life is rewarding,” he said. “I want to be able to make a difference; to have a meaningful and tangible impact on the sustainability of our industry.” Last year Kieran was selected as one of two New Zealanders to attend the 10-day agricultural immersion Syngenta Connections Programme in Vietnam. The programme was advertised through Massey Agriculture.

The trip’s purpose was to learn about and develop solutions to the problems faced by smallholder farmers in southern Vietnam. Kieran said the trip was split into two sections. The first half of the trip focussed on gaining an understanding of the local production systems and the cultural influences. This involved presentations from stakeholders, site visits to Syngenta manufacturing, research and developing sites, as well as a community immersion programme meeting with local farmers to discuss the many issues they face and assisting with crop harvest. “In the latter stage of the programme, we were split into groups, and a competition was held to develop a scaleable solution to one of the problems faced by these small-holders.” Kieran said Syngenta put $2,000 towards a pilot project for the winning design. On the final evening of the trip, the groups presented their solutions. Kieran’s group came up with the winning project. This project looked at solutions to chemical waste disposal. Much of the waste from agricultural chemicals are either left in the field or burnt near local communities. “For me, the trip was about gaining exposure to international production systems to see how agriculture is conducted in other parts of the world. It was interesting to see how similar many of the challenges that these smallholder farmers faced were to those facing New Zealand farmers.” While attending Massey University, Kieran was also a member of the

Thank you to the NZCS for helping Kiwi families in their time of need.
Since 1990 Daffodil Day has been bringing people together to support the Cancer Society’s work and raising awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Money raised during this annual campaign is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society and goes towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, education and awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected. Whether it’s buying daffodils, donating to street collectors or purchasing merchandise — every gift counts. Conducting and funding world-class research is key to the Cancer Society’s work in preventing cancer, and with the generous funds donated by New Zealanders, there has been significant progress made in cancer research over the past 50 years. The survival rate for many common cancers has improved by up to 30 per cent, and more than 60 per cent of cancer patients now survive five years or more. Every year treatments are getting better, and research is finding more results. More people are surviving cancer than ever before.

Off the beaten track NZ Adventures is a long-established company offering various off-road and backcountry tours in the South Island. Participants bring their own or hire suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles and are guided by the experienced team of Robbie and Connie Crickett from NZ Adventures across a wide variety of the island’s vast backcountry — over sheep stations, forests and conservation lands. Especially popular amongst the five different tours on offer are the High Country Heritage six or seven-day tour and the fiveday Eastern Explorer. The High Country Heritage is a tour down the foothills of the Southern Alps starting in Blenheim and ending in distant Cardrona with overnights in Hanmer Springs, Methven, Fairlie, Omarama and Cromwell along the way. On the sevenday March trip, the additional overnight is in Geraldine. The High Country Heritage tour is very much an overview trip offering a glimpse into the operations on the stations, the scale of the landscape above and away from the tourist routes, the size and power of the mighty rivers and the distances involved between some isolated and often iconic places. Omarama to St Bathans by the most direct route would be a good example. This is NZ Adventures’ most popular and longest established tour. The Eastern Explorer is the first new trip that business owners Robbie and Connie brought to NZ Adventures when they purchased the business in 2013. Starting in Geraldine and finishing in Alexandra the tour takes in the very diverse
and possibly little-known area of the eastern foothills of South Canterbury and inland Otago. Included are the Hunter Hills, Hawkdun and St Mary’s Ranges — along with the Strath Taieri region and the Lammerlaw and Lammermoor and the Rough Ridge. The region is rich in New Zealand’s early European history with the gold at Lawrence and the vast pastoral runs. Modern industrial mining features at Macraes Flat alongside over a hundred years of mining history. The trip on the fifth day follows a gorge of the mighty Clutha River. Enjoy five days of amazing scenery with the bonus of a great and like-minded company in the deep south.

What causes osteoarthritis? by John Arts
Part 2 Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.
We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. So much to offer by Jill Dickie
With the Tasman Sea and coastline on one side, the Tararua Ranges on the other, and the bird sanctuary and dune lake, Lake Horowhenua between, Levin offers a wide range of outdoor activities. It is close to rivers, beaches, lakes, and mountains, and boasts a rich cultural heritage. Walking and cycling enthusiasts visiting the Kohitere Trig Track are provided several walking and cycling tracks, with views from Mt Ruapehu to the South Island on a clear day. The Mangahao Makahika Track from Levin to Shannon is a hiker’s dream trip of about five to six hours, and Prouse Bush Reserve has shorter trails suitable for family groups and those not quite so fit. For a stunning view over the township and the lake, a drive to the lookout on Arapaepae Rd is well worth packing a picnic lunch for! To the south, Lake Papaitonga has an interesting cultural history, and the scenic reserve is an important refuge for birds that depend on wetlands
or lowland forests for their survival. Rare plants and wildlife inhabit the reserve, and for the protection of their environment, visitors should stay on formed tracks whilst enjoying the area. For families, a visit to Owlcatraz is a must-do activity, to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the moreporks, weka and glow worm caves, and if the children still have energy to burn a stop at the adventure playground should tire them out. You might even like to indulge in the rolling human-sized hamster wheel yourself! Research to reduce nitrogen
13
DairyNZ is leading a seven-year research project that aims to breed cattle with less nitrogen in their urine with the aim to reduce sector-wide nitrate leaching by 20 per cent. “One of the key commitments of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy is to ‘protect and nurture the environment for future generations’,” says DairyNZ geneticist, Mark Camara. “A team of researchers is making good on that commitment by investigating the role of genetics in reducing nitrogen (N) in cows’ urine. The research involves thousands of cows on farms around New Zealand and scientists are developing breeding strategies and estimating the expected reduction in N leaching — potentially up to 20 per cent. “If we can breed dairy cows that excrete less N in their urine, we can reduce the amount of N reaching our waterways. That’s good for farming and good for our environment. “Previous research has shown that, in dairy cows fed N-rich diets, milk urea
levels and urinary N rise together, but this environmental correlation doesn’t necessarily mean that cows with genetically-low milk urea that are fed the same diet as typical cows will have low urinary N.” If this ‘genetic correlation’ doesn’t hold up, selecting for low milk urea won’t reduce urinary N. “We don’t know if reducing urinary N would compromise other breeding worth traits through other, unfavourable, genetic correlations or improve them through favourable ones.” Verifying these genetic relationships isn’t easy. It takes many measurements of urinary N, milk urea and other BW traits on related cows to separate the environmental and genetic contributions to these relationships. To take these measurements a high-tech gadget
developed by AgResearch is attached to free-ranging cows. It channels urine past a sensor and records the time, volume, and nitrogen concentration of every urination. Pairing direct urinary nitrogen data with indirect measurements such as milk urea and applying complex statistical models can then estimate the genetic correlation between milk urea and urinary nitrogen. “If it’s high enough, we can use milk urea as a predictor trait. If it’s not, we’ll have to find another way.”
Mark Camara, DairyNZ geneticist

Our Pole Sheds are awesome!!!
Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep
49:22 PM
wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together, covered with chicken wire and windbreak cloth. Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or wheels, you can shut the hens in then drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded spot for egg laying. Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need.
A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy!

Shelters for all by Ann van Engelen
Made from pine, cedar, iron, mixed cladding, plastic, heavy duty fabric or speciality wood, a shelter can be traditional or uniquely designed to suit your personality and requirements. Animal shelters, garden and wood sheds, carports, barns and feed storage are just a few scenarios of smaller sized buildings that may be required on your property, whether it be a farm, lifestyle block or family home acreage. There is a range of baby barns that offer more headroom and wall space than traditional baby barns and can be lined or unlined, with a range of colours, size, door and window options. The small buildings are ideal for bunkhouses, animal shelters and hen houses — the uses are limitless, and the designs take up minimal space on any property. For all your shed, shelter, carports, spare room, art studio or office needs, check out designs available from various local companies or discuss the design you may have in mind with them, often producing the product of your requirements is easier than you think. Looking after animals is a priority and ensuring they have good shelter is
a must for their health and safety both in cold weather and the heat of summer. Ensuring chickens, donkeys, goats and other animals have housing is simple, and many are now designed to be easily moved and relocated allowing fresh food and minimal pasture damage. Feed pads shelter groups of animals from wind, rain and sun and keep the feed in good condition and save wastage. Calves need a clean, well-ventilated, well-lit shelter to give them a head-start in life and providing the best possible environment for raising calves can include sheds or shelters with doors or openings on both ends to provide natural light and gentle air movement, keeping the animals’ environment fresh and clean. It also prevents them from overheating — with even temperatures allowing them to remain more relaxed. Dairy goats benefit from the same type of system.

Increasing NAIT awareness Joint Ministry for Primary Industries and NAIT Ltd compliance operations have a greater understanding amongst farmers of the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme, but some are continuing to break the rules. Manager of compliance investigations, Gary Orr, says MPI and NAIT Ltd have been running joint operations around the country to check compliance with NAIT requirements. “We are pleased to see knowledge of the NAIT scheme has increased in the wake of the Mycoplasma bovis response; however, some farmers are still ignoring their legal obligations,” says Mr Orr. “The Mycoplasma bovis response has highlighted the importance of tracing animal movements and having complete and accurate information available. It is critical all farmers comply with NAIT and Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

track all animal movements on and off their farms. Those that aren’t are putting the rest of the industry in jeopardy.” Mr Orr says MPI and NAIT Ltd are increasing their focus on compliance with NAIT requirements. “Both organisations have significantly stepped up their efforts to detect instances where animal movements have taken place without being recorded in the NAIT database. Since the start of the year, MPI has undertaken around 200 NAIT compliance checks on farms and saleyards where cattle or deer are present.” In addition, MPI has conducted 19 proactive compliance operations across the country, including during the moving period and Operation Cook Strait in March. “As a result of these operations, we have issued a number infringement notices and written warnings. We are conducting further enquiries on stock movements and currently have eight active investigations underway. These

may result in further infringement notices being issued.” Mr Orr says NAIT Ltd has begun an analysis of NAIT data to identify those farmers who continue to offend. “Any farmers who have breached the requirements of the act will be sent a warning letter by NAIT Ltd. If they do not
meet their legal requirements within 30 days, they will be referred to MPI for further enquiries.” Operations continue at various locations throughout the country through random inspections at key livestock depots, transit points and livestock exchange or saleyard points.

The government and key players in the wool industry have taken the first step to revitalise the languishing sector at the Wool Summit held by the Ministry for Primary Industries. Some 40 wool producers, processors and other industry players met in Wellington to address the lack of performance across the sector. “The Wool Summit put the right people in the room who are clearly united on taking a fresh approach to secure a stronger future for wool,” says Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor. “They stressed the need for the industry to tell the story of wool to consumers, at a time when the world is crying out for alternatives to plastic and synthetics. “There was a good mix of enthusiasm and experience at the summit, and everyone agreed we need to build trust and collaboration across all parties to turn wool into a success story for New Zealand, as it once was.” Mr O’Connor says wool has huge potential as a sustainable and valuable product but has languished since deregulation in 1997 and the unsuccessful levy referendum in 2014 — leading to a lack of industry
unity, structure, common vision and strategic focus. Federated Farmers Meat and Wool Industry Group chairperson, Miles Anderson, says there was a ‘real sense of urgency to get cooperation and momentum and the time for wool is ‘now’ — given how environmentally aware the greater community has become. New Zealand wool producers have been under pressure, particularly in the last two years as prices for strong wool hit record lows. “Wool offers an environmentally friendly product as opposed synthetics — oil-based products, which release microplastics into the environment.
The mentality and commitment that now exists in the industry show an understanding of what has to be done for this industry to compete and thrive,” says Mr Anderson. “Wool producers have been able to survive during some trying times. They have done that with tenacity and a keen business sense which the working group should be able to draw from.” From the summit, a small working group is being formed and will work with MPI to progress the next steps. MPI is also investigating how it can use its Economic Intelligence Unit to help the sector better connect with highvalue customers.
