Fonterra farmers are keeping up with the times and utilising technology to help their businesses

While Fonterra’s Farm Source website remains popular for reporting and comparisons at month end, Fonterra’s mobile apps are now used more often for checking key day-to-day information. Across Fonterra’s farmer mobile apps there have been around 13,000 unique user downloads. Fonterra general manager for operations and farmer services Evelyn Seewald said getting information to farmers faster to help them run their businesses has been a priority for the co-operative. “Our farmers are rapid adopters of digital technology on farm and have led the design of our apps with their feedback, which has been very positive. Farmers who previously swore they’d never need a smartphone, now tell us they can’t imagine life without it. “Through Fonterra’s smartphone apps, farmers can access key milk production and quality information and receive important business updates,

which they’ve really appreciated given the nature of farming means they’re often away from their computers.” Ms Seewald said the apps have also been a positive step for the cooperative’s quality assurance and service delivery to farmers. “Having this vital quality and production information at their fingertips means farmers can make timelier onfarm decisions and can be alerted to any potential quality issues at any time, wherever they are.” Fonterra currently has three apps available for download for its farmers or users nominated by farmers: a milk production and quality app launched in 2014, a news app launched last year and a monthly plant check app that is being piloted this season. “We’re the only dairy co-operative in New Zealand offering this kind of service to our farmers, and we’re constantly enhancing our digital offering based on farmer feedback,” Ms Seewald added.

Region-wide civil defence plan adopted A region-wide Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Plan has been adopted by the Manawatu-Whanganui Joint Standing Committee. The Group Plan is a strategic document that outlines the vision and goals for emergency management across the Region and how they will be achieved. Chair of the Committee, Horizons Regional Council chairman, Bruce Gordon, said the Group Plan replaces its 2009 predecessor and reflects learnings from emergency events such as the June 2015 floods. “The vision of the Group Plan is to have a resilient regional community.” “In order to do this it is our goal to reduce risks as much as possible, encourage community preparedness, make sure all relevant agencies are aligned to provide an effective response to an emergency and enable recovery from events,” said Mr Gordon. “This Group Plan encourages cooperative planning and demonstrates the commitment of each district within the region to work together. “The importance of this collaborative approach is clear during events like June last year where more than one district suffered from flooding.” Mr Gordon said the Group Plan has been signed off by Minister for Civil Defence Nikki Kaye, and a Ministry representative reported at the meeting that it set a high standard. “We are pleased to hear that our Plan is considered exemplary in terms of its attention to detail and in some

ways sets a benchmark for other regions.” Whanganui District mayor and committee member, Annette Main, said events such as those in June clearly demonstrate the need to work together. “Councils work together across other areas and I believe that the area of emergency management is the most important so I am very glad to have the Group Plan adopted,” she said. Rangitikei District mayor, Andy Watson, is also a member of the committee. He believes history proves how important it is to be prepared. “We’ve had multiple events that highlight

how quickly things can happen and the Group Plan provides direction for each scenario.” “It’s great to have these measures in place and know the Ministry agrees,” he said. The Group Plan was put out for public consultation from March 4 to April 1. down from Tangiwai Station to the Miln’s farm each year to be carried through for 12 months. The best of these bulls then went under the auctioneer’s hammer. Recently, after a decade of holding bull auctions on Alastair and Kay’s Kimbolton farm, the Knauf family and the Milns decided it was in the clients’ interest to have all the bulls auctioned at one venue. Alastair and Kay had been involved with bull auctions for 31 years. This year 70 bulls will be up for sale at Tangiwai Station. The Milns are now grazing dairy cattle but the main enterprise on their farm is recorded Romney sheep. Four-hundred ewes are currently run on the property. Alastair said Romneys are the backbone of New Zealand’s maternal breeds. “I’ve always had an interest in them. We enjoy recording, and breeding for facial eczema resistance,” said Alastair. The couple have also recently become involved with Charollais sheep and run 35 crossbred ewes on the farm. “We are grading up,” said Alastair. Their initial interest in the breed began when a friend got involved with Charollais at Lincoln University shortly after their importation. Charollais sheep originate from east central France and are among the newest terminal sheep breeds in New Zealand. “The opportunity arose to buy some half-breeds — they have good growth rate, meat yield, and easy birthing.” said Alastair. Alastair was raised on a King Country farm before heading to university. In his final year of study at Massey University, he was awarded a farm consultancy scholarship in Kaitaia, funded through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. “I was then bonded to them for 12 months,” said Alastair. Kay was also involved with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, working at the Ruakura Research Station, before she went nursing. When the couple married, Kay joined Alastair to work on the farm. Farming suits the couple’s love for living in the country, being outdoors and working with stock. “Farming is a great lifestyle,” said Alastair. Since taking on their Kimbolton farm, the couple have subdivided more paddocks, increased the fertility and upgraded the water supply.

“The previous owner took the property up one level and we’ve taken it up another,” said Alastair. Situated on the banks of the Oroua River, the farm includes two pockets of native bush with a QEII covenant on them. Alastair said the previous owner had planted a lot of trees when they took over the farm. The Milns have continued tree planting, particularly natives. In conjunction with Horizons Regional Council they’ve also planted the riversides with willows. Beehives have recently been introduced to the property too. In 2007, Alastair and Kay decided to develop a farmstay, opening up the farm gates to welcome visitors. Friendships have developed with guests from all around the world. Pet sheep and a couple of house cows provide guests with opportunities to interact with some of the animals. “We’ve kept the farmstay low-key,” said Alastair. Every five years, Alastair and Kay sit down to goal-set and consider any restraints that could hinder achieving their objective.

“Once we’ve set a goal, the pathways become easier to work towards it.” Alastair said farming is a challenge when there are so many issues outside of the farmer’s control. “We can influence or alter things within the farm gate and just live with the rest,” he said. “The challenge is to manage them and minimise those costs.”

All for the birds by Denise Gunn Dawne Morton has always had a fondness for birds but it was an injured hawk, found on an Eketahuna dairy farm 27 years ago, that led her to a path of bird rescue.

hortly after nursing the hawk back to health, Dawne went on a course run by a member of the Rapture Association of New Zealand (RANZ). Dawne also went on to become a member of the Bird of Prey Association, learning about banding hawks and their lifestyle. Further training covering avian first aid followed at Massey University in 2003. On approaching local veterinarian clinics in Wanganui with the offer of caring and rehabilitating injured raptors, Dawne found there was a call to care for all type of birds. Several interested individuals assisted Dawne to form a bird rescue group, initially servicing the Whanganui region. When bird enthusiasts from

Manawatu expressed an interest, the Bird Rescue Wanganui/Manawatu Trust was formally established in 1996. Sick and injured birds are now dropped in or collected from Taranaki to Horowhenua, the central plateau area, and across to southern Hawke’s Bay. The group originally took native birds to veterinarians in Wanganui for treatment. However in 2003 the group was contacted by Dr Brett Gartrell at Massey University’s New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre (now Wildbase), offering specialist veterinarian care for the native birds. This was the establishment of a partnership between the wildlife vets and Dawne’s bird rescue operation.

The birds are then returned to Dawne’s base at Turakina for rehabilitation and preparation for release. The number of birds needing care varies depending on the season. Intense storm systems can also force sea birds inland. “Albatross have been found at Halcombe and Taihape, and Gannets up Mount Ruapehu,” said Dawne. “An Australian Barn Owl was found in Waverley one year.” Typically the birds that come have been hit by cars or have flown into windows. On arrival, birds are assessed for injuries and illnesses. Dawne said it is also important that each bird is weighed. “We know what a certain species should weigh and we give them oral fluids, over a 24 hour period, which is based on a percentage of the body weight. “We also put pain relief into that and antibiotics if required.” With an increasing number of swamps on farmland being drained, native habitat is disappearing. Dawne said hawks are now resorting to nesting in hay paddocks but the chicks are often run over by hay mowers. “Some farmers are now placing electric fences around nests to provide protection from stock and farm machinery.” Wherever possible, birds are released back into the area they were found. Dawne also has access to several lakes on farmland where she can release birds. The property owners are involved in ongoing predator control.

She said more areas are needed in Taranaki to release birds. Bird Rescue Wanganui/Manawatu relies on donations and grants to fund caring for the birds. A number of organisations and businesses provide bird food on a fairly regular basis, and courier company Fastway provides transport for the birds to Massey University’s Wildbase. More than 1,000 birds now pass through the bird rescue each year. “There are times we are in dire straits and think we can’t continue,” said Dawne. Several groups of volunteers help out which includes veterinary students, international visitors, retirees, and high school students working towards Duke of Edinburgh awards. A fundraising project is currently underway to have a house moved onto the property which will provide accommodation for students and WOOFERS who help out.

“We need a new generation of bird rescuers who need to get experience.” Bird rescue is a round-the-clock job. With Kiwis and Moreporks requiring feeding overnight, Dawne often gets to bed around midnight, only to wake again at daybreak to care for the other birds. Although she finds rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing the birds rewarding, there are plenty of concerns. “It’s a huge job preparing birds for release,” she said. In an effort to reduce the number of wild birds killed and injured each year by flying into windows, Bird Rescue Wanganui/Manawatu sells window decals. “The decals contain a component which reflects ultraviolet sunlight,” said Dawne. “This ultraviolet light is invisible to humans but glows like a stoplight for birds.” The decals are available to purchase through www.birdrescue.co.nz

Education options There is a wide variety of education providers in the Taranaki region, from early childcare through to tertiary institutions. This gives parents of school-age children the choice of co-educational or single sex, boarding or day, religious or secular schools. There are more than 100 options for early childhood education in the region. Playgroups are also available for caregivers and children aged 0–5 to meet together in a relaxed environment. Do we have Laminitis? I have just been running some trimming workshops on the West Coast and found myself regularly confronted with the continuing acceptance that physical force is the main contributor to lameness in New Zealand, together with a reluctance to accept that Laminitis is a very real problem here. So, do we have laminitis in New Zealand? There are people who believe we don’t because ‘it has not been proven’. What difference would it make? Why would we care? I believe that if you really want to solve a problem, you need to know what causes the problem. How else are you going to solve it? I believe that if we try to keep lameness under control by solving all the physical issues then we are only solving the symptoms. So, what is my point? When I talk about laminitis I am talking about an unhealthy live tissue in the hoof caused by internal imbalances. The symptoms of an

unhealthy live tissue are haemorrhaging, holes and cracks, deformed hoofs and just about anything else we see wrong with the hoof. Most people mistakenly assume that all those symptoms are caused by standing on stones and other ‘sharp objects’, or ‘pushing cows too hard’ and therefore adding too much pressure on the hooves. The problem here is that this has never been proven to be the case. However, the fact that those symptoms are mainly a domestic cow issue and not so much a wild cow issue shows that there has to be more going on than just physical forces. I would argue that a cow in the wild is a lot harder on her hooves than a domestic cow on our farms. The fact that those symptoms are more cow-related than hoof-related raises questions. Why are those symptoms symmetrical on both

feet on most cows? That doesn’t make sense if it was caused by physical force. Also, why do we see haemorrhaging up on the dorsal wall? How could physical force be the cause of that? Why do we see the outer claw deformed much more often than the inner claw? Why do most cows go lame on the rear hooves if they only carry 40% of the weight? Why do we see mostly the outside claws displaying these symptoms if this is supposed to be the claw with the most protection? Why does it have a positive effect on the cow when we take some of that protection away by trimming? Think about it. How do you explain all those things from a physical force point of view? Research overseas has shown that diet and stress have a major impact on lameness. I know we are in New Zealand, but if it looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, it waddles like a duck and it flies like a

duck it probably is a duck. We need to understand this properly because it will affect our management style — all of a sudden, controlled starvation becomes a problem rather than a tool, only one water trough may not be enough, and having cows out of the paddock for long periods of time becomes an issue, and the list goes on. I do not understand why people deny that laminitis is in dairy cows in New Zealand. I do not see any reason for that especially when the evidence so clearly points in that direction. Just for the record, I believe that just about every cow in New Zealand has some degree of laminitis in their feet. In the majority of cases it is not severe enough to be a problem for the cow. What are we to make of the latest pay promise of $9.20/kg ms for organic milk? $9.20 is a 60 per cent rise from the current organic payout and a staggering 235 per cent higher than the payout for conventional milk. What does that mean? It means for one thing, that there has been a massive worldwide shift in the mindset of dairy product consumers. The fact that they’re willing to pay a lot more for organic milk is a sure sign they’re no longer comfortable ingesting the chemicals found in typical milk products. They’re saying no to our penicillins, weed sprays and parasite pour-ons, and saying yes to clean organic milk. Here’s what else it means. Farmers will need to take greater responsibility for adding value to the products coming off their farms. With recent low commodity prices, we’ve been critical towards dairy companies for not producing and marketing value-added products from the milk sent to them. We’ve expected the factory to add the value and increase our return. Fair enough. I think that’s a critical part of Fonterra’s job. But what if some of the onus is on us to supply Fonterra with a better value-added product to begin with? Products like organic milk. Wouldn’t that put Fonterra in a stronger position to maximise our payout in a global market that clearly wants chemicalfree products? A small group of farmers are discovering that it does. These farmers, either certified organic or close to going organic, were brave enough to significantly alter their management practices some time ago — $9.20/kg ms will be the reward for their foresight. Good for them. But where does that leave conventional farmers? What changes are we going to have to make in the way we run our dairy farms? The most important change has nothing to do with milk solids but

everything to do with grey matter. We need a shift in our thinking. When you read ‘changes in the way we run our dairy farms’, what was your reaction? Running my farm organically will mean a drastic drop in production. It’s impossible to run a farm without penicillin, weed sprays and pour-ons, and urea. If that was your response, I completely understand. I thought exactly that when I first contemplated the idea 14 years ago. I was so used to managing my farm with chemicals, the idea of dropping these synthetic practices seemed ludicrous. Like cutting off the branch I was sitting on. But I made a start and discovered some crucial things. First, I learned that I’d become brainwashed over the years. Where did the belief come from that all these chemicals were necessary for high production and good payouts? Answer: From the companies that made the chemicals. These corporate giants with their big marketing budgets were constantly promoting a version of science that lead to one inevitable conclusion: I needed the chemicals they were selling. So I bought from them. At some point however, I focussed on proving that good production was not

determined by a high usage of nitrogen. At that time the farm was growing 14 tonne of dry matter per hectare while using 150 units of nitrogen per hectare. After adjusting my management, the farm grew 19 tonne dm/ha from applying only 30 units of nitrogen per hectare. A 35 per cent increase in production with 80 per cent less artificial nitrogen. Over 10 years, I challenged and successfully changed a lot of conventional practices. Others went even further than I did. They’re the ones that will collect $9.20/kg ms next year. If you’re thinking of joining the trend to move away from a heavy dependence on chemicals, can I suggest you take this first step: sack your conventional thinking consultant. He can’t possibly think outside the chemical square because it’s the chemical system itself that gives him an income. Second, talk to a biological adviser who has been there and done that. They understand from experience how hard it is to think and act in new ways. They also know what to do and how to do it. Third, be bold. Someone once said that fortune favours the brave. At $9.20/kg ms for organic milk, they’re absolutely right.

Battle lines are drawn There’s no feud like a family feud. Just one comment at Christmas dinner about Auntie Irene’s new haircut and it’s more than the turkey which gets carved. It’s the same in the rivalry between in-house brands under one overarching automotive umbrella.
