Cow & Horse Processing in Levin No Moore Hassel Pet Food is an MPI approved and recognised primary meat processor. Based in Levin we offer local farmers a free and highly professional pick-up service for unwanted healthy cows and horses in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. If you would prefer to transport your animal yourself or have your horse or cow put down on the farm then we can arrange this with a No Hassell guarantee.

The programme aims to enhance farmers’ financial risk management skills and prevent business failure. MPI’s Rural Communities and Farming Support director Nick Story said the primary sector is the backbone of our economy. “It’s vital we ensure farmers and growers are equipped to withstand challenges facing the sector. “This course will give them the skills, tools, and confidence to help make their agribusinesses more financially resilient. Farmers and growers can’t control the weather, commodity prices, or shifts in consumers’ shopping habits, but they can plan and prepare for change.” Agri-Women’s Development Trust has been allocated $331,000 to research, design and deliver the programme. AWDT’s general manager Lisa Sims said the programme would be piloted with sheep, beef, dairy, arable and horticulture businesses in Hawke’s Bay, Manawatū, Canterbury, Otago and Southland. “The aim of the course is to empower farmers and growers to understand the different types of risks facing their business, and give them the skills to develop plans to manage the financial and personal implications of those risks,” she said. Funding for the programme is part of a $1.15 million commitment in the 2020– 21 financial year to reduce the risk of primary producers getting into financial strife. Up to 130 people are expected to take part in the training course. For the next three years, MPI has earmarked $500,000 each year to enhance financial literacy and risk management skills. A further $100,000 has been allocated to the Farm Business Advice Support Fund to provide farmers with independent advice to help tackle farm debt. “This fund is managed by the Rural Support Trust national council and has

Lisa Sims — Agri-Women’s Development Trust general manager

already been accessed by more than 40 businesses. “It’s believed the support has prevented farmers from defaulting on loans and requiring the services of the Farm Debt Mediation Scheme,” said Mr Story. Launched in July last year, the Farm Debt Mediation Scheme has an annual budget of $550,000 to help farmers and growers work through debt issues with their lenders. “There have been 42 requests for mediation services through the scheme. Importantly, it has encouraged lenders to engage in conversations with at-risk clients earlier, avoiding the need for mediation,” he said. Farmers and growers can request mediation at any time, and hardship funding is available through MPI. A pilot programme for the sheep, beef, dairy, horticulture and arable sectors in Manawatū will be held in Feilding on Wednesday, July 7 2021.

Horizons Regional Council is now accepting consent applications for new or extended intensive winter grazing (IWG). Horizons’ regulatory manager Greg Bevin said that although the Minister for the Environment has decided to temporarily delay some elements of the intensive winter grazing regulations, this does not apply to new or expanded IWG established after June 2019. “These regulations came into effect this month, and consent applications, if required, will need to be lodged with Horizons before October 31 2021.” In addition to the IWG consent application form, Horizons has developed an IWG management tool. This tool will help landowners identify and collect the required information for their application. “It is expected this document will be able to be incorporated into Fresh Water Farm Plans in the future; both these documents can be found on Horizons’ website. “Horizons’ rural advice team have also developed a Paddock Risk Assessment Tool, which can be used on any device, whether out in a paddock or at your desk, to do a quick assessment of paddock suitability for IWG. “This information can be used as part of your management plan and can be

Greg Bevin — Horizons’ regulatory manager

accessed through Horizons’ website,” said Mr Bevin. IWG regulations not relating to new or expanded activity have been deferred by the central government for one year to May 2022. This deferment is in response to feedback from regional councils and

farming sector representatives on the difficulty of meeting the new requirements, which are part of the National Environmental Standards for Freshwater (NES-F). This delay will allow time for the central government to assess whether the permitted activity conditions need to be revised. Both the Ministry for the Environment, and Ministry of Agriculture, are currently working on a Fresh Water Farm Plan (FW-FP), which will include an IWG module. By May next year, it is expected farmers will have the option of undertaking IWG through a certified FW-FP. This is an alternative to complying with the permitted activity conditions in the regulations or obtaining resource consent. The farming sector and regional councils have agreed to make improvements to current practices this winter in return for the one-year deferment.

Mr Bevin said Horizons would be implementing a monitoring programme around IWG practice within the region, and the results of this, alongside water quality monitoring undertaken by Horizons, is required by the central government to be reported quarterly. “Horizons already has one of the larger State of the Environment monitoring programmes nationwide, and this is proposed to increase through council’s 2021–2031 Long Term Plan.” Horizons is holding public IWG workshops during June 2021. For information on these and to register, email the rural advice team at ruraladviceteam@horizons.govt.nz.

Women’s Institute celebrates 100 years BY DENISE GUNN

As 2021 marks the 100th centenary of the New Zealand Women’s Institute, members around the country are celebrating the occasion.

anada was the first country to establish Women’s Institutes in 1897. Eighteen years later, the movement was introduced to England and soon became widespread throughout the United Kingdom. While working as a war service volunteer in England during the first world war, Hawke’s Bay resident Anna Elizabeth Jerome Spencer was impressed with the work of Women’s Institutes. On her return to New Zealand, together with Mrs Francis (Amy) Hutchinson, the pair formed Rissington Women’s Institute in February 1921. Soon afterwards, more institutes were established throughout New Zealand. Now, there are close to 230 Women’s Institutes and 37 district federations with

more than 3,300 individual members. A national executive committee consisting of seven members manages the organisation. New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes executive officer Colleen Dryden said the aim of the organisation is to encourage women to take an active part in the development of their community. “Women’s Institute has been extremely important for women through the century. Having time away from the farm, learning new skills, making new friends and being empowered to speak up in public.” Women’s Institute members have also continued to help others during the past 100 years. earthquake, efforts by the Women’s Institute brought women from all over the country to assist. During the Great Depression, members shared ideas on how to make ends meet. Throughout the second world war, hundreds of packages filled with food and clothing were sent by institutes to serving soldiers and those under attack in the United Kingdom. “Now members fundraise for New Zealand organisations, having raised over $100,000 for Kidney Kids to utilise by way of airfares for children with kidney disease, to attend summer camps. Every second year, members fund a $10,000 scholarship for medical research. Local fundraising events impact on local communities as well.” The Wellington Provincial Federation, formed in 1928, began with 13 institutes and 3,080 members. Two years later, 31 institutes came under this federation, with seven of these in the Manawatu. A decision was made to divide the Wellington Federation into Nelson and Marlborough and Taranaki and Manawatu. In 1939, following a ruling that federations should have no more than 30 institutes, the Wellington Provincial Federation was discarded. In its place, southern Wellington, Manawatu and Oroua became federations. Manawatu Federation president Helen Dunlop said adversity saw institutes at their best with members finding strength and courage in working together, particularly during the second world war. “Thousands of articles were knitted for the servicemen and women, and men in POW camps. Wool was spun and knitted into garments for minesweeper personnel.” Food parcels, including cakes and biscuits, and large quantities of rendered fat, were sent to Great Britain. Sewing bees were also formed to make garments for Great Britain’s bomb victims and refugees in camps. Cuddy toys were made for children too. Following the second world war, members were able to return to their former interests. Craft exhibitions and festivals were very popular, and show bays restarted in 1946. Mrs Dunlop said members have continued to support many charitable

Oroua Federation president Avril Smart said Women’s Institute’s big focus is sharing friendship with each other and serving the community. “We make sure all members are made aware of activities and have the opportunity to meet and have fun together.” Several institutes in the Oroua Federation were formed between 1928 and 1933. More joined later. “Members had handcraft shows and volunteered their services in the community. As institutes, they visited factories, learnt first aid, had travel talks, and competitions for flowers, cooking, knitting, crochet, sewing and crafts.” Drama evenings, concerts, dance nights, card evenings and birthday celebrations also proved popular. This year the Wanganui Federation disbanded, and two institutes in that

There are currently 76 members in the Oroua Federation. “The future of the Oroua Federation remains very strong because of our commitment to the Women’s Institute organisation,” said Mrs Smart. urly was born and bred in Taihape, where he still lives, working in the rural sector for Ballance Agri-Nutrients. He also serves the community, clocking up 30 years with the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade and currently holding the rank of chief fire officer. “I was asked to join when I was providing refreshments to the brigade for a chimney fire my wife had,” he said. The fire crew holds weekly training sessions, along with attending call-outs in and around Taihape.

It was at Taihape’s inaugural Gumboot Day in 1985 where Curly first picked up a gumboot to throw in a competition. The Taihape Community Development Trust kicked off the event, held in the township’s Gumboot Park. Taihape has since secured a place on the global map, gaining recognition as the gumboot capital of the world. Since that initial gumboot throwing attempt, Curly has perfected his technique to throw a personal best distance of 38.7m. Curly said his personal challenge is to throw 40m.

Although there were only a few teams from overseas that attended, we held a very successful event with the New Zealand men’s team winners, of which I was fortunate to be a part of. Nowadays, I’m running, promoting and showing techniques at events we hold. Seeing the improvement in throwing is a huge success.” Curly said throwing into the wind is always hard. “I try to show people the best technique is a discus throw, which enables the gumboot to spin and go further. “No practise is required as it only takes six to nine throws on the day to get your eye in.” In 2014, the New Zealand Boot Throwing Association was established. As a founding member and current chairperson of the association, Curly is a keen promoter of gumboot throwing throughout New Zealand. “Usually around November, at the Canterbury A&P Show, we head down to promote and run the South Island Gumboot Championships,” said Curly. In March, the New Zealand Gumboot Championships are held during the New Zealand Rural Games in Palmerston North. These championships consist of the top three men and women from the North and South Islands, and the top two men and women from the Have A Go Gumboot Throwing contest, held prior to the games. At this year’s Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards, held during the

Sports Awards judging panel convenor Nathan Twaddle said the awards honour everyone from young athletes to lifetime achievers including those who work behind the scenes to make sure rural sports survive. Mr Twaddle said that although the quality of entries was high across the board, the nominations for the Toyota Lifetime Legacy Award proved so high that judges couldn’t decide on just one winner. Mr Twaddle said many people were deserving of this award, and judges decided to recognise all five of the finalists as equal recipients of the award. The other winners of the Toyota Lifetime Legacy to Rural Sports Award were Sally Mallinson for sheep dog trials, Greg Herrick for shearing, Nick Liefting for fencing, and Sheree Taylor for wood chopping.

Planting is now done by transplanting cell packs, and automated irrigation systems take care of the watering. Jay said Woodhaven’s 2,500 acres are spread across different properties and paddock locations, covering a distance of 50km between Otaki and Shannon. In addition to vegetables, Woodhaven also grows maize and ryegrass for soil health improvement and reduce nutrient losses. “We crop about 2,100 acres.” He said when Woodhaven Jay checking the progress in the packing house was established, there were close to 300 growers in the district. The Clarke family focusses on running the business in a sustainable and socially responsible manner for the next generation. “We’ve always been a bit ahead of our time looking at the business holistically,” said Jay. “We’ve thought about the impact on the community, building a good and loyal workforce, having a good place to work, management in a sustainable way, and a real desire to produce the highest quality in the market.” Woodhaven Gardens was awarded the 2020 Ballance Farm Environment Awards Supreme Winner — Horizons region. The business entered the awards to demonstrate to other growers how par tnering with other businesses and Massey University helped their environmental sustainability journey. Judges noted Woodhaven’s significant investment in understanding and improving its environmental impacts and benefits. Connecting with various environmental groups and growers guided them to a scienceled approach in partnership with community stakeholders. Sharing this approach with Horticulture NZ has also led to it being

WHANGANUI

New library for Aramoho Whanganui’s newest library, in the outlying suburb of Aramoho, is set to open following renovation work. Librar y performance manager Sonny Tamihana has been overseeing the project. “The new library building was once the dental clinic at the former Aramoho School at 2 Mitchell Street. “We’re taking a building, which once caused kids a lot of fear and anxiety, and transforming it into a welcoming place that not only kids, but people of all ages, can enjoy.” Mr Tamihana said as well as giving the Aramoho community easier access to books; the library will be a hub where people can connect and get to know others. The new Aramoho Library/Te Whare Pukapuka o Aramoho is a partnership with the Pasifika Vision Forum Trust. The trust runs the Born and Raised Pasifika early learning centre on the site where the library will be based. Library manager Pete Gray said Pasifika Vision Forum Trust chair, Hellen Puhipuhi, is doing great work in the community. Mr Gray is thrilled to be opening this new library with her and the team. Three staff from Born and Raised Pasifika will be among volunteers on

hand to help patrons as soon as the library is up and running. A self-service machine for checking books in and out, and paying overdue charges, will be installed at the library. A touchscreen computer will be available to search for books and reserve them. “People will effectively be able to access any book in our network of libraries because you can reserve books and get them sent to Aramoho Library to pick up,” said Mr Gray. “It will be our third self-service library, after Whanganui East and Castlecliff. We regularly refresh the books at our suburban libraries using the mobile library vans.” Free Wi-Fi Internet access and two desktop computers with the library’s free Internet on Demand service will be available. “Everyone is invited to come along and celebrate the opening of this new library with us,” said Mr Gray. “If you don’t already have a library card, membership is free.” The opening day for Aramoho Library has been rescheduled for Friday, July 2 at 1pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

The adoption of the ‘h’ to the name of Whanganui raised eyebrows at the time; however, if it was not for a bit of chance and a twist in a very old tale, Whanganui could have had a much longer name.

The pre-European place name for Whanganui references the same legendary Māori explorer responsible for the longest place name on Earth

That’s because the original preEuropean settlement there was named for a legendary Māori explorer, the great Tamatea-Pokai-Whenua. The local people, Ngāti Tūpoho, called their commanding pa site Pūtikiwharanui. A reference to the regal top-knot of Tamatea-Pokai-Whenua, and the flax cord he cut there to bind it up. Tamatea-Pokai-Whenua is said to have travelled extensively after coming to New Zealand aboard the ocean-going waka Takitimu. His name means ‘one who encircled the land’. His deeds attached to many locales, as evidenced by the story

of his top-knot making a name for the pa at the Whanganui River mouth. The most famous of these stories record the place where TamateaPokai-Whenua sat down on a hill in the Hawke’s Bay area. There he played his flute for his loved one, giving the hill the name Taumatawhakatangi hangak oauauotamateaturipukakapikimaunga horonukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, the longest place name in the world. If the legendary figure had stopped for more than a short while before travelling up the river, Whanganui might have had a much, much longer name.

Forward head posture doesn’t look good. It shifts your centre of gravity forward, disproportionate to the weight of the head. Every inch your eight-pound head protrudes in front increases the load on your neck and shoulders by ten pounds. That increases the workload for many of the muscles attached to the cervical spine, which has the job of holding up the head. Over time, forward head posture can lead to muscle imbalances as the body tries to adapt and find efficient ways to hold the head up. Some muscles become elongated and weakened, whereas other muscles become shorter and tighter. What Causes Forward Head Posture? Many bad habits of contemporary living can cause ‘text neck’. The key culprit is long periods of time looking down. This condition was

thought to be associated with the older population. However, with lifestyle changes, the era of social media and mobile devices, we are now seeing it in children. This change in posture may lead to headaches, neck pain, upper, mid and low back pain. The damage can be long lasting and irreversible if left uncorrected. Chiropractic adjustment can restore proper joint motion, alignment and

muscle tone over your neck and upper back. This problem isn’t going away anytime soon. To have your forward head posture assessed, call us now to take charge of your health. Planting project for Whanganui East by Denise Gunn

A new planting project in Whanganui East will see local artist Brydee Rood, 60 school students and Burton Avenue residents working together. The project called, A Future Canopy, was sparked after four macrocarpa trees were removed from Burton Avenue. “When I saw four humungous Macrocarpa trees had been cut down in my neighbourhood, I mourned those trees and all that loss of habitat for birdlife and insects,” said Ms Rood. After contacting the Whanganui District Council, the parks team explained that the trees had to be removed because their branches were beginning to weaken and drop. The trees would become a safety risk. Ms Rood said she is always looking out for opportunities to explore her art projects in interesting public spaces. “So when the parks team told me the macrocarpas would be replaced, I made a project proposal, and they were open and receptive to the idea.” A Future Canopy involves planting four seasons of native trees. These trees will be both a continuous source of nectar and berries for pollinators and enhance the neighbourhood for people to enjoy. “A Future Canopy is a living sculpture. Trees are living, breathing, growing, changing, and that’s how I want my artwork to be; not static.”

School students from Cullinane College, Whanganui Girls’ College, St Anne’s School and Whanganui East School will be involved in the project. A karakia and planting day with Bur ton Avenue residents and the schools will be held in June. Whanganui East School deputy principal May Bennett has been coordinating schools for the project. Each school will be gifted four to six native trees, corresponding to the project, to care for in their school grounds. The council is funding the Burton Avenue trees, and Artist Brydee Rood has initiated a project called the Eleanor Burgess Trust is A Future Canopy, which will take place in Whanganui East funding the schools’ trees. The council’s public art fund chair “I’m so pleased to see the level of Anique Jayasinghe said A Future community engagement Brydee has Canopy would be registered as a undertaken for the project too. public artwork. “Hopefully, this is one of many more “This living sculpture will stand public artworks to come for Whanganui’s as a unique addition to Whanganui’s outer neighbourhoods.” collection of public art, and it invites us to reconsider our usual assumptions of what public art can be.

Where students thrive by Lindsey Robinson

Once a necessity, now a preference, students thrive on the academic, sporting, cultural, service and leadership opportunities made possible by boarding. Students will tell you that their house is more than where they stay, it quickly becomes a connection for life. With four boys’ houses and two girls’ houses, Whanganui Collegiate School is the leading co-educational boarding and day school in the lower North Island. “Boys and girls think, problem-solve and react differently in social situations and therefore, they learn from each other’s differences. At this school, boys and girls learn to support each other, to work together, and as a result are well equipped for life after collegiate — it is a co-educational world,” says headmaster Wayne Brown. “All students require quality teaching and personalised learning. At collegiate, celebrating diverse learning is at the forefront of what we do, with

a focus on empowering students with the academic, social and personal skills required to study and achieve. “More importantly, Whanganui Collegiate School is where families are united,” says Brown. Parents can support all their children during the same weekend. Thus the family structure is strengthened through the critical years of secondary schooling, developing a child of promise to a young adult of great character. Learning with confidence by Arthur Yeo

We will call her simply Flora, and she came to see us at NumberWorks’nWords, hiding behind her mum’s dress just home from school where she had been told by another student, she was dumb at maths. Because she wasn’t in the Tuatara Group like he was, she came home in tears asking why she was so dumb at school. Mum cleverly called us to find out how she could help Flora. Finding the courage to learn is not as easy as you might think. If a child has stumbled in class with maths or reading, it can significantly impact learning confidence. It only takes a careless word from another student or a perceived putdown by an adult, and your child may find it a challenge to try again. We love working with all levels of learning confidence, high or low, and enjoy finding what makes your child tick. By carefully assessing what your child knows and doesn’t know, we’re able to determine the right level to start the learning journey — not too hard and not too easy. Children have a wonderful ‘knower’, and they intuitively work out when the work is the right stuff for them. They sometimes take time to be

EDUCATION Learning and life away from home by Paul Campbell

Across New Zealand, rural isolation can often mean young people make an early departure from the comforts of home to find themselves miles away at boarding school. For some, that may conjure fear of austerity and the cold accommodations of Victorian novelists’ descriptions. Still, in the modern era, the reality of modernday boarding is very different. “Boarding houses no longer exist in haughty isolation, impervious to change,” recorded the director of one modern boarding institution, Carruth House at Whangarei Boys’ High School in Northland. “Much like the learning and development institutions they work in tandem with, boarding houses must move with the times and adapt in order to stay relevant and in demand.” The days of runny porridge, cold toast and indifferent overcooked vegetables are long past in today’s boarding institutions, with meals usually produced in glistening kitchens by qualified chefs. In the Taranaki region, many schools have a tradition of boarding students. New Plymouth Boys’ High School, for example, accommodates more than 200 boarding students, while Stratford’s

Taranaki Diocesan School for Girls is almost all boarders. They, and others, have developed this old fashioned tradition into a vital aspect of modern education for students who live far from the seats of academia. As typical students should experience a range of activities at boarding school, perhaps not so many computer games and cell phones as things like playing rugby, tennis, learning piano, playing cricket and maybe joining a band, after of course, lessons of a more academic nature. Boarders are encouraged to take part in the sporting and cultural activities on offer, alongside their studies. A concern for parents is always that children away from home are safe and cared for, and today’s boarding establishments typically provide a safe environment with clear boundaries, curfews and rules.

Prefects become ‘big brothers or sisters’ and always look out for the interests of the younger and newer boarders. Students mention the

lasting friendships they make and the sense of community, feeling like they belong to something bigger than themselves.

Branch closures, the phasing out of cheques and the disappearance of ATMS are causing difficulties for rural communities. A recent banking survey conducted by Federated Farmers revealed farmers’ concerns around these issues have added to the continued slide in satisfaction with their banks. More than 1,100 farmers responded to the May survey, with 71% concerned about bank branch closures. Of those who were concerned, 42% said they needed branches to carry out their business, and 56% were worried about the impact of closures on their local communities. “Provincial towns are under all sorts of pressures, with workforce gaps, farms jobs disappearing as productive land is planted out in pines for carbon credits, competition from online sales trends that all traditional retailers face, to name some of the factors,” said Federated Farmers president and commerce spokesperson Andrew Hoggard. “Bank branch closures are just another hit on confidence, making doing business in rural areas that much harder, and another reason for young people to look to cities for their future when agriculture is the main way New Zealand earns its living in the world.” The May survey also threw in a question about banks phasing out cheques. Five per cent of respondents said they use cheques and don’t have easy access to alternatives. Another

61% said they don’t use cheques but are concerned about people who don’t have easy alternatives. National’s spokesperson for rural communities Barbara Kuriger said reducing rural communities’ abilities to do business does not match the drive to do banking online. “There is an entire generation of farmers and growers who are not familiar or even users of IT, so the need for cheques remains. Even in times of hardship, farmers are extremely reliable bill payers on the 20th of the month. “It’s scary for people who haven’t done this. The learning is incredibly huge.” Mrs Kuriger said there’s also the practical problems, as more banks close their doors in rural towns and their ATMs disappear. “The lack of cash is causing issues for retailers, farm and roadside sellers, as well as school mufti days, galas and coin trails. As we move to a cashless society, the effects go wider than that to include Saturday sausage sizzles, sport, club and charity raffles and street appeals.”

Barbara Kuriger — National’s spokesperson for rural communities

Finance and Expenditure Select Committee chairperson Dr Duncan Webb said during a meeting last month, members took a keen interest in the issue of ensuring equitable access to banking services. The matter remains before the committee and its finding will be made publicly available.

WRIGHT SILVICULTURE LTD FOR ES TRY S ERVI CES

This year’s Norwood annual charity golf tournament and fundraising auction raised $100,000 for the award-winning, rural wellbeing programme Farmstrong. Ninety-two players played 18 holes in teams of four at the Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary in May. It’s the third year the event has been held and funds raised exceeded previous years. A formal dinner and fundraising auction, with Craig Nash of New Zealand Media and Entertainment as MC, followed the golf tournament. PGG Wrightson Limited’s regional livestock manager Kevin Mortensen was the evening’s auctioneer. Guest speaker and south Taranaki dairy farmer Kane Briscoe shared the positive impact Farmstrong has on his own rural community. He outlined his own project, Farm Fit, which gives local farmers the opportunity to join him for boot camps, getting them off the farm and injecting physical movement into their days. Norwood CEO Tim Myers said Norwood is proud to continue its support of Farmstrong. “Norwood is involved in rural communities the length and breadth of New Zealand. We understand the unique and often uncontrollable challenges farmers, their families and their communities face every day. Farmstrong plays a vital role in providing farmers with the tools that make it easier to cope when the going gets tough. “We’re thrilled to be able to donate $100,000 from this year’s event to

Three waters details still awaited

by Paul Campbell

Councils, their elected representatives and their wider ratepayers across the country are now waiting to discover the full detail of the government’s controversial Three Waters plan to tackle the country’s drinking, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure before making a decision for or against. The government is working on a proposal to combine the country’s 67 council-owned and managed water services into a small number of publicly owned providers. Just how the reforms will unfold across New Zealand was expected in March this year, but now they are due in July. “Until we have information on the full details of the proposal, we have nothing on which to base an informed decision,” says Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith. “At the present time, it is an option to opt-out of the government plan, as has the Whangarei District Council and Auckland Council. In our case, we remain at the table to see what unfolds. “However, the government may make inclusion mandatory.” Dr Smith said the loss of water oversight would reduce council revenues by some 20 per cent — a significant reduction. His concern is echoed in small councils across the country that centralisation means local council operations become eroded to a central authority. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta has said that “the affordability challenges facing our

water infrastructure are too great for councils alone,” as she released 600 pages of reports with information on council water reticulation and resources. These papers say an investment of between $120 billion and $185 billion is needed during the next 30 years to ensure New Zealand’s drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure meets acceptable public health and environmental standards. “The reports also highlight how the national water infrastructure reforms would create an extra 5,900–9,300 jobs countrywide between 2022 and 2051,” Nanaia Mahuta said. “Together, the reports confirm the need for major reform to upgrade Nanaia Mahuta — Local Government Minister and maintain our water infrastructure, protect our environment range from $1,900 to $13,900. Under and avoid unaffordable increases to reform proposals with five providers, household bills.’’ those figures range from $800 to She said without reform, average $1,800. With three providers, the range household bills in 2051 are forecast to is $800 to $1,600.

No job too big for Pacific Mulching

Our bags aren’t plastic

Manawatu-based Pacific Mulching Limited offers a nationwide service specialising in land clearance and site preparation for landowners, farmers and orchardists. The firm also specialises in other extensive schemes, including roading project upgrades and major land developments. Formed in 2008 to meet the demand for specialist stump chipping and mulching, Pacific Mulching Limited currently covers the Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Wanganui and Taranaki regions. The majority of work revolves around landowners redeveloping the land. Old, overgrown windbreaks are removed, orchard shelterbelts taken out, and cut-over pine blocks are converted into pasture. Owner/operator Neville Rodgers said his company generally turns unproductive ground into more productive land for grazing and cropping. “Pacific Mulching is a firm believer in putting the wood fibre back into the soil whether it is stumps, trees or slash. This is a quicker and more economical alternative than burning.” Using specialist machinery, they tackle all heavy-duty land-clearing and site clean-up projects. Additionally, the business is equipped to supply highquality wood chips and mulch, turning

wood waste into usable products. Woodchip and mulch are ideal for animal bedding, barns, stand-off pads and general landscaping supplies. “We can also process pallet waste, construction and demolition waste, forestry waste, storm clean-up and green waste grinding,” said Neville. Pacific Mulching Limited makes light work of removing troublesome poplars and willows in waterways, too, turning them into usable chips or mulch. “Most of the wood chips or mulch can be turned into boiler fuel for energy

WE ARE OPEN & DELIVER

and heating. We can also deal with shelter tree heavy tops and limbs.” Neville said landowners and farmers with old trees that need removing can choose whether these are taken away or processed into wood chips or mulch on-site. “We can offer the total job with full clean-up from chipping and grinding to mulching and stump chipping and raking of residue. “Pacific Mulching has recently purchased new specialist equipment to help with the demand for wood recycling. It includes a 765hp horizontaltracked grinder/drum chipper, which can go from grinding to chipping whole trees in half a day. Nothing will go to waste. It has a quick change cassettestyle rotor system, allowing one machine to carry out two different functions.” Plans are underway for Pacific Mulching Limited to establish a processing and storage facility for woodchip and mulch supply. Neville says this will supply wood-fired boilers, animal bedding and more. For further details, or to discuss project requirements, phone 021 079 6373 or 0800 Stumpy.

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: June

Forestry Plantings not taking over New Zealand Against popular and misinformed belief, New Zealand is still in a state of deforestation. We have less pine forests now than we did 10 ago due to large clearing of forestry for dairy conversions. During 2003 to today there have been less new plantings of pine trees going in that being removed. Forest Owners association put the net stocked area of pine at 40,000 ha less in 2020 then 2018. So, our producing forest area is still reducing. Total new plantings of pine trees for all of NZ in 2020 was only 16,000 ha. Not where we need to be to reach the recommendations of the Climate Change Commission of planting 27,000 ha of exotics every year. The fact that more pine forests have appeared on the East Coast of New Zealand but disappeared from areas of Canterbury and the Central Plateau

seem to have escaped the attention of most people. There are not more pine forests, they are just in different places. Land more suitable has now been converted to dairy and land more suitable for trees has been converted from unproductive sheep and beef country. In Marlborough, most land that was sheep and beef converted to grapes from the 1980’s onwards and now huge areas of land are covered in vineyards. The entire Marlborough Sounds that was sheep farmed is now mostly batches and regenerative native bush. And this is the way land use change should work in New Zealand. Although people do find change hard, and many have got used to the landscape looking a certain way, only one thing is definite. These changes will happen regardless of isolated opinions, and our new future moving towards a carbon neutral NZ

Ref; Forest Owners Association Facts and Figures 2019/2020 and carbon neutral products will drive it. Plantation tree crops only cover 8%

of New Zealand land mass and exotic grasslands still cover 40%.

Our People in Forestry – Improving Health and Safety in the Sector Juana Doyle is the Health and Safety Advisor for Mills Albert Ltd, a locally owned Kapiti-based contracting and forestry business operating within the North Island. Juana was nominated for the Outstanding Health and Safety category at the recent Southern North Island Wood Council Awards and the whole team turned out on the night in Palmerston North. Juana has built great relationships in

the sector dealing with civil engineering and forestry harvesting with clients like Forest360. She is known for her can-do attitude and positive customer focus, and nothing is an issue that can’t be fixed. Health and safety is a major focus in the forest sector and with experienced staff like Juana, we have no doubt that new innovations and attitudes will see considerable improvements. Juana, we salute you!

Forestry Big Day Outs Last week saw the completion of 3 “Forestry Big Day Out” bus trips. Kapiti College, Paraparaumu College, Field Ag High School, Whanganui City College and Cullinane College students all participated in field trips to see harvesting Operations with McDougall Logging, SMH Logging and NAB Logging Ltd. John Turkington Ltd, Forest Enterprises Ltd and Mitch Pine Sawmill all gave time and staff to these full day field trips and we thank them! Many students and teachers were enthralled by the use of technology and advanced systems used to harvest wood, as well as finding out where our logs go and what is made at a local sawmill. Ray McDougall has taken on many students in the past for both work experience and full-time jobs, and he may have a few more turn up after this!

Ray McDougall gives Nate Neil and Sidney Diamond from Cullinane College work experience.

Is EV Subsidy a tax in disguise? by Jane Gray

I ask because the only ones that can afford an EV car don’t need the subsidy while the rest of NZ will pay somewhere along the line. What about the added cost to those that live rurally and use combustion engines to carry out their day-to-day business. Trades, farming, postal services; and so the list goes on. What happens to them? There is no EV that could do the work that utes or SUVs do in our country. So from July 1 when we need to replace our combustion engine vehicle we will be taxed or penalised. How is that right? What happens to tractors? Should farmers go back to horse and plough? Not to mention emergency services, for example. What if there’s a fire at the end of a rural road, with the response, ‘sorry we can’t get there, there’s not enough charge on the battery.’ State highways are not fit for purpose let alone for EV use. Can you imagine them on our metal roads? At the moment the answer for dangerous roads is to change speed limits or put cones up; this will not change the fact that there is still a road that needs serious attention. Where is all the power coming from to charge these vehicles? Our power grid has enough trouble delivering what we need now. So does that mean more

dams will need to be built? Better be careful it’s not an SNA. What happens to all of the batteries once they are worn out? I agree that our environment is precious and needs to be looked after. It does seem rather ironic that resource consent has been given for a 60-hectare tip in the Dome Valley, north of Auckland. How is that looking after the environment? I also wonder if that was SNA mapped and if not why not. What about looking at fossil-fueled power and manufacturing plants that we have to import coal to run. Better public transport. How about we get better systems for recycling or better still get rid of what we can’t recycle and probably never will be able to. How far will the powers that be go to rid the country of emissions? What’s next, the humble lawnmower or chainsaw? There are so many things in everyday life relying on fuel, and most need servicing, what will happen to those jobs? When will everyone else stop paying for those that pay very little but earn so much?

How curcumin helps osteoarthritis by John Arts

Without doubt the most important supplement ingredient for osteoarthritis is chondroitin sulphate. The reasons are simple. Chondroitin is a very important constituent of cartilage matrix. This matrix is secreted by specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells live in tiny cavities (lacunae) in cartilage. Their role is to maintain cartilage as it is damaged by wear and tear, injury and chemical processes that damage it. That being said, the health of cartilage is totally dependent on maintaining healthy chondrocytes. Unlike many other cell types, chondrocytes cannot be replaced. There are a number of antioxidants and trace minerals that directly affect the health of chondrocytes. The most important is curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin is perhaps the most studied natural health ingredient. As a potent antioxidant, it helps protect chondrocytes from damage from free radicals. Secondly, curcumin is anti-inflammatory which can help calm the joint by preventing unwanted fluid build-up. A two capsule daily dose of my joint formula

contains 800mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 200mg of Curcumin C3® Complex, plus 5mg of BioPerine®. In most cases, I will start clients on a double dose of two capsules twice daily for around six weeks. This provides double the above dosages; when combined with good quality fish oil these result in rapid effects. Last week I completed a review for a client I have been helping with very sore thumbs from osteoarthritis in his big thumb joint by the wrist. He reported a significant improvement over the past three months. Please contact me if you have joint problems, and I will put together a personalised joint health programme. In the vast majority of cases, we can get real improvements in flexibility and comfort. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. THE STORY BEHIND NEWS IS CLEAR. PEOPLE TRUST PRINT JOURNALISM

The luxury of choice

by Andy Bryenton

There was a time when you could have any European car you liked as long as it was a BMW or a Mercedes. Those were the days when the 190E Cosworth and the M3 E30 ruled. Alfas were known to blow up, Volkswagens were still Beetles, Volvos looked like a very safe loaf of bread, and anything French seemed to have been manufactured by style-conscious aliens who put the buttons in all the wrong places. Even when Pininfarina made the pretty little Peugeot 306 drop-top, the horn button was on the end of the indicator stalk and activated a siren under the passenger seat. Jags were for Arthur Daley and the Kray twins. Audi made psychopathic rally-eating monsters and not much else. Lancias were beautiful and rusted like a cat food tin, and Italian supercars were temperamental glass cannons of things. Fast forward to the present day, and nearly every name on this list produces an excellent modern SUV. Even Lamborghini sawed off the mad bits and made the Urus. However, there’s still a problem of choice if you want a fun, stylish looking station wagon. There

It's the dirtiest job on the farm!

Cupra represents a new design look for parent company Seat, itself a Spanish branch of the mighty VW-Audi family

are many of us who eschew a frontwheel-drive ‘crossover’ as a travesty, a powdered-egg omelette when what you want is the full Benedict. A true ‘estate car’ or a shooting brake looks better, handles better and guzzles less gas. So what does one do if one wants a standout, cool, 300 horsepower wagon that comes with good engineering underneath and a sharp image up top? It turns out you go to Spain. Seat, the Volkswagen-owned subsidiary, which shares a parts bin and lots of tech with Audi and Lamborghini, has launched a performance skunkworks standalone brand, like M Division or AMG. It’s called Cupra, and among its offerings is the very pretty, nicely proportioned Leon VZ Sportstourer.

With some German hammers and calliper work under the hood churning out 310 horses, and 400 newton metres of torque from a two-litre turbopetrol mill, it’s quick on paper. It’s also eye-candy delicious in photographs, with its copper-finished 19 inch mags and its stealth-bomber crisp, origami lines. Certainly, you could get a more expensive Mercedes, which will be heavier and more powerful, or a big BMW for a few extra dollars, and have to deal with the new design language that’s making us forget Chris Bangle. A similarly priced Skoda is now a plainclothes police car, mind you. So it may pay to check out this fourwheel-drive five-door from the land of Gaudi and Dali. It’s here this month.
