Their 428ha property, Te Maunga, is made up of a 240ha dairy platform, an 83ha runoff, 41ha of managed pine plantations, 35ha fenced riparian margins and 29ha of native bush. The couple have farmed it since 1999. Contract milkers, Liam and Margot Richardson, milk 720 Friesian/Jersey cows, once a day in the 50-bale rotary shed, producing 235,000 to 245,000kgMS on a pasture-based system. The property is bounded by the Manawatu and Mangatewainui Rivers Andrew and Helen said sustainability equals longevity and balance across the physical environment, business and people. “We feel we are the custodians of this little patch of New Zealand and whether we hold it for our own children or someone else’s children, it is our responsibility to value it and enhance it,” said Helen. Biodiversity is evident throughout the farm. The couple have a continuous focus on planting trees and Helen grows a small number of extra natives from seedlings each year. “We have fenced off significant areas every year,” said Andrew. There is also an existing wetland with another in planning stages. Judges commended Andrew and Helen

on their willingness to embrace new technology and systems. As well as the supreme award, Andrew and Helen also won the DairyNZ Sustainability and Stewardship Award, Hill Laboratories Agri-Science Award and WaterForce Integrated Management Award. The Farm Stewardship Award was won by Ohotu Station manager, Dean Francois, for the Atihau Incorporation, Ohakune. Morikau Station managers, Hamish and Katrina Thompson, won the People in Agriculture Award, the Predator Free Farm Award and the Horizons Regional Council Award for the integration of trees. Pongaroa sheep and beef farmers, Alistair Timothy and Rachel Joblin, who also have forestry on their property, Arklow, won the Ballance Agri-Nutrients Soil Management Award, CB Norwood Distributors Agri-Business Management Award and Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award. Apiti dairy farmers, Lance and Katherine Gillespie, Table Flat Holdings Ltd, won the Massey University Innovation Award. The Margaret Matthews Trophy for Commitment to Sustainability went to Marton dairy farmers Logan Bowler and Kathy Craw from Kagan Ltd.

Records broken and record crowds for rural games

The Hilux New Zealand Rural Games drew a crowd of more than 30,000 participants to Palmerston North recently. New Zealand Rural Games Trust chair, Margaret Kouvelis, said it was fantastic to see people of all ages trying out different things from tree climbing to digger driving, to gumboot throwing. “We are proud that our events are free,” she said. “This is only possible for the generosity of our sponsors.” Two world records were broken during the games. Ricki Paewai and Kris Richards, knocked out a new world record in Egg Catch and Throw with a massive 85.96 metre throw and catch. The duo took the previous world record off fellow New Zealanders, Robbie Hollander and Nick Hornstein, set in Swanton, England last year. Taranaki arborist, Nicky Ward-Allen, broke the world record for the foot lock at 19:55 seconds — the previous world record of 20.17 seconds was gained in 2015 in Tampa, Florida by Jamielee Kempton. The Eltham resident has previously held the world record for the fastest footlock in 2010. Back then the competition was based on a height of 12 metres, and Ward-Allen completed it in 13.26 seconds in the US. Games founder, Steve Hollander, said the fourth annual Hilux New Zealand Rural Games was the best yet. “Our trust board is focussed on achieving two major aims — celebrating rural sports that helped build our nation,

and bringing country and city kids together to help close the rural-urban divide,” he said. “Every year this event grows from strength to strength. We’re now the largest event between Mystery Creek and Wellington. “I want to publicly thank Toyota, Fonterra, Husqvarna, CB Norwood and Property Brokers for their unflinching support. All our sponsors and volunteers have contributed to a massive weekend of entertainment, and we have delivered an event that drew families in from across the country.”

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY DENISE GUNN

Nineteen-year-old Shantel Nicholson has always had a passion for animals. The aspiring veterinary nurse’s desire to save and rehabilitate birds has led her to open a rescue charity, Animal Adventures, to the public.

S

ince finding and rescuing a baby bird that had fallen from its nest on the front lawn of her parents’ property, Shantel has been saving as many birds as possible. “I realised from that moment how many birds there would be around the place that need someone to help them,” she said. Although she didn’t know a lot about birds with her first rescue, Shantel was determined to save it.

The Constant Angle Knife Sharpening System

“I rushed the fragile baby inside and warmed it up. “It had severe bruising and wasn’t in a good condition at all.” As soon as the nestling was warm enough, Shantel attempted to feed it. The nestling then required syringe feeding every 20 minutes for several days. “Thankfully he grew stronger and the bruises faded,” she said. “After two months in my care, I

successfully released the fully-grown adult thrush back into the wild.” Since that first rescue, Shantel has cared for sparrows, blackbirds, starlings, thrush, silvereyes, finches, ducks and orphan ducklings. Shantel now accepts birds from the public as well, and during bird season can get between seven to ten birds dropped off each week. “But there can be the odd week where I can get 12 to 15 baby birds. “I get around four ducklings a week also.” Although the majority of the public drop the birds off, sometimes there are circumstances when a bird is unable to be delivered. Shantel said when this happens, her parents step in to help and take her to collect the birds. When a bird is dropped off to Shantel, she checks the bird for injuries and the severity of those injuries. The bird’s overall condition is also assessed along with any signs of dehydration. “If the bird is injured or sick in any way, we have to take them to the vet to get treatment. “Most of the birds we get in that are injured have infections, meaning they need a course of antibiotics. “Once the birds are back to health I release them, but sadly sometimes the birds are just too sick or injured to be saved, and in those unfortunate cases we have to get the vets to put them to sleep.” Animal Adventures has been established on Shantel’s parents property near Levin. She also has a

Facebook page, Animal Adventures, dedicated to her charity. Fledgling cages have been set up for birds learning to fly and perch. Large, stand alone cages are used for birds that can fly and are learning to self-feed.

“Most of the birds we get in that are injured have infections, meaning they need a course of antibiotics.” Animal Adventures also cares for ducks and orphan ducklings

“I have a big enclosure set-up for the ducklings; but need some more fencing and housing so I can care for more of them.” “In order to keep saving birds, I am going to urgently have to have an aviary built to put the birds in.” Shantel said the current set-up for the birds isn’t ideal, but funding is difficult. “Although we have some very kind people donate goods and money to us for food and veterinary care, we are really struggling, as we don’t know from each week if we are going to get a donation to help us out. “We really need a sponsor, so we know we will always have enough funds to take a bird to the vet in an emergency. “At the moment, my parents are having to pay for most of the care for the birds, which is beginning to become an impossible task.

“So we are really in urgent need of some funding — every cent helps the birds out.” Donations of newspaper, syringes, disposable gloves, small mesh and timber are also welcomed. Bird seed and baby bird formula is helpful too. Once the birds have been raised and rehabilitated, Shantel releases them back into the wild. A newly hatched

bird is usually in her care for around two months before being released. In this time they have learnt to feed themselves, perch, fly and develop their natural habits. With space to expand on their property, Shantel would ideally like to build some aviaries and have more housing for the birds and ducks.

Environmental stewardship and farm profitability is key by Denise Gunn As one of eight breeding and finishing properties under the Atihau-Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI), Ohotu Station covers 1,463ha of flat to rolling hill country east of Ohakune.

T

he property’s history dates back to the early 1900s. Between 1902 and 1904, the land, which Ohotu was made up of, was vested into the Aotea District Maori Land Council. It was subsequently leased out under a Glasgow lease arrangement. At one stage the lease was owned by the Carters family, who ran a logging and sawmill operation from the farm. In 1970 AWHI was formed, with the aim of resuming leases and taking over farming operations. Ohotu was resumed in 1996 and brought under the incorporation’s management. At that time it was separated into three leases. Since then, work has been done on increasing the productivity of the property and improving its sustainability. Lambs and young cattle are sent to Ohotu from

the incorporation’s breeding stations. Ohotu’s main function is to finish the stock on pasture or forage crops. Ohotu Station manager, Dean Francois, said close to 29,500 lambs and 2,200 cattle are sold annually. Currently the biggest buyer of Ohotu’s beef is AngusPure, and is sold under the new export brand AngusPure Special Reserve. “We’ve recently partnered with Auckland distributor Foodchain and are now selling beef under our own brand — AWHI Farms,” said Dean. “This has only just started but is already growing and something we are really excited about.” Lambs are sold to both ANZCO and Ovation. Wool is sold through NZMerino. “The meat company Ovation is a critical outlet to Atihau as it processes

Dean began working as Ohotu’s stock manager in 2010 and was promoted to manager two years later both lamb and the cull ewes for the incorporation,” said Dean. “On the farm at the moment we have 1,000 15-month-old cattle, 300 27-month-old cattle, 100 cows and calves, and 80 Friesian bull calves reared on farm. “As well as this, there are just over 24,000 finishing lambs on the property.” Dean began working for AWHI as Ohotu’s

stock manager in 2010. Two years later he was promoted to manager. Working alongside Dean is stock manager, Alfred Alabaster, and general shepherd Daniel Richards. “At the start of 2017, I was given responsibility for managing Atihau Whanganui Incorporation’s other finishing farm — Tohunga,” said Dean. Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions.

An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

Ohakune. With Ohotu’s altitude rising between 610 and 745 metres above sea level, the property experiences very long winters. Dean said during June, July and August, pasture growth is minimal. “We get snow on the ground four to five times a year, and if we are unlucky it can hang around for a week at a time. “We can also get quite dry over summer,” he said. Ohotu receives 1,200mls of rainfall per year and the property has two main water systems, pumped from the river. The station’s soils are made up of mostly volcanic ash. Kale and swedes are grown annually on 70ha of the property. Over the years one area of focus has been on subdividing the larger paddocks. The property is now divided into 140 paddocks. Dean said 103 hectares has been irrigated with water on the farm through a pumped scheme. “Stock have been excluded from over 22km of waterways and 111 hectares retired. “Over the next three years we want to plant 6,000 native trees in riparian margins, establish 2.5km of shelter belts and fence off the last 1km of waterways and drains,” he said. “Atihau Whanganui Incorporation wants to establish a corridor for birds from the Whanganui River to the Tongariro National Park. “This will help us achieve our part in this wider vision.” The subdivision programme to improve grazing management will also continue. “Our big focus at the moment is on

Winning an in calf Hereford heifer in a raffle, donated by Awhea Herefords, at the 2012 Manawatu Lifestyle Expo led Trudy Robertson to establish her own stud - Rosebank Herefords

T

he following year Trudy bought two in calf heifers, two yearling heifers and a two-year-old bull from the Kauri Hollow stud dispersal in Port Waikato. During the 2017 Beef Expo, Trudy purchased an in calf heifer from Panorama Stud. “The herd has now been expanded, with my partner Peter purchasing some in calf commercial Hereford heifers last year, so my bull has a bit more work to do for the future,” said Trudy. The couple are currently running approximately: 15 Hereford cows and calves, 400 mixed aged ewes, 120 ewe hoggets, 150 dairy beef fattening cattle, 10 milking goats and 20 young

dairy goats, on their 163.5ha (129.2ha effective) Stanway property. Trudy also hand-rears around 15 dairy beef calves, split between spring and autumn, as trading stock. The goats are milked to feed the calves, decreasing the costs of rearing. “The calves do very well on it, and is comparable to calves reared on milk powder.” Split into the main farm of 159.4ha and a 4.1ha lifestyle block across the road, the property has a gorge running through it, several native bush blocks and tree plantations. The majority of the soil on the medium hill country property is Halcombe clay loam, with

some patches of sand and iron ore. With 50% of the farm croppable, a range of supplementary feed is grown. Magnesium lick blocks and magnesium oxide are used to prevent milk fever in the cows during winter. Trudy said calves are vaccinated with 7-in-1 instead of the 5-in-1, as it contains two strains of the leptospirosis vaccine. “So if I happen to sell my bulls into the dairy industry, they are covered for leptospirosis. “I also BVD test and vaccinate my yearling bulls, and give boosters as two-year-olds. Basically we run a fairly minimal and easy-care farm, which is leading to parasite tolerance.”

In addition to running the farm, the couple work part-time at the Feilding Saleyards; Trudy as a drover in the cattle section, and Peter as operations manager. The stud name, Rosebank Herefords, was suggested to Trudy by her grandmother. Trudy’s greatgreat-grandfather, John (Jack) Brice established a Hereford stud, named Rosebank, at Fern Flats, Marton in 1918. That stud continued until about 1944 when Jack’s youngest son, Frank, established Waimutu Hereford Stud, discontinuing the Rosebank stud name. “I had to get the Hereford Association’s council approval to allow me to reinstate

Think water safety Trudy is currently focusing on showing her female Herefords although she has shown some bull calves in the past the Rosebank name, which thankfully they approved.” Trudy is a full herd registered member of the New Zealand Hereford Association and also a member of the Central Districts Hereford Club. The Hereford’s moderate size with great growth and diversity for cross breeding appeals to Trudy. “Their white face stamps their mark when cross breeding, especially when diversifying into selling bulls in the dairy industry. Breeding for low birth weights while maintaining good growth rates and muscling is also an advantage of the Herefords, which is great for hybrid vigour in the offspring.” The breed’s temperament is a big drawcard too. “Being able to draft in the cattle yards by myself and not having them

In the future she is considering selling stock through websites such as StockX and Trade Me to reach a wide variety of buyers from large farmers to lifestyle block farmers. “My cull cows are generally sold directly to the local trade freezing works. “Once we get our numbers up we will be able to send lines of store steers and cull heifers to the Feilding Saleyards.” The couple aim to build up the herd

She is currently focussing on showing her female Herefords, although she has shown some bull calves in the past. “I view showing as a tool to knowing if I am getting my breeding right, especially in the structure department. “It’s always good having other people’s opinions, so I know what to work on when it comes to my breeding and purchasing new herd sires.”

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

11

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See red bar for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

TESTIMONIAL

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. Most people come see us at one of our local roadshows, with serious neck issues see a large you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain. improvement after only one treatment.

Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Mycoplasma Response funding

The government has announced funding into the Mycoplasma bovis (M bovis) Response to continue its efforts to trace and contain the disease. These funds will cover costs up to the point when a decision is made on the feasibility and economic viability of eradicating M bovis. It is anticipated the funding will be made up of $60 million for compensation liability and $35 million for operational costs. In principle, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have agreed to contribute NZ$11.2 million towards the operational costs. “M bovis is a significant concern for many farmers, none more so than those directly affected by it,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “The M bovis Response is on a scale well beyond any livestock disease responses to date, with the exception of the ongoing investment in Bovine TB. M bovis is an industry productivity issue rather than a trade risk, the government sought industry financial support for the response. “B+LNZ consulted with sheep and beef farmers about joining the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response.

The responses showed 85 per cent support for joining GIA, and we are in the process of finalising our application to join so that the sector can play a greater role in biosecurity decision-making. “MPI is currently leading the response and decision-making. Given the widespread concern among beef farmers about the disease and its potential impacts, farmers provided feedback that the beef industry (B+LNZ) needs to have a direct role in decisionmaking about where the response will head, including having access to the full range of information about the cost and feasibility of eradication, and the projected impacts on the cattle sector.” B+LNZ has agreed in principle to step into a decision-making role and that the beef industry should make a contribution to the M bovis response. “What a contribution from the beef industry would look like is still to be worked out in detail. Our expectation

is that it will be based on GIA principles around allocation of costs (such as the impact of M bovis on the beef industry relative to other affected sectors) and a full role for industry in response governance. “We have not made this decision lightly and acknowledge some farmers may be disappointed about making a contribution. Working jointly with DairyNZ, DCANZ, and MIA we have set some conditions around making a contribution, with the key ones being: • Joint decision-making rights and with that full disclosure of information; • Beef farmers making a fair-share contribution through a Biosecurity Act levy; • Government working with industry to urgently fast-track improvements to our animal traceability systems at a mob level (i.e. eASD) and through enforcement of NAIT. “It’s important to point out the $11.2 million contribution is focussed on this first phase of the response and is without prejudice to future cost-sharing arrangements that may

be required depending on next steps. “We will hold the government to account to ensure the response and funding sought is appropriate. “Current analysis suggests the longterm direct impact on beef production is not likely to be significant, our sector is indirectly affected through impacts on calf rearers and restrictions on stock movements, including relationships with dairy farmers through grazing contracts and bull leasing.” B+LNZ has appointed Paul McCauley as a dedicated resource; collaborating with DairyNZ and MPI and sharing information with farmers.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Getting good advice The farm environment can be a hazardous one, and health and safety plans have become very much a part of today’s farm environment. According to WorkSafe NZ, while there is no single document or product that is a blueprint for farm safety, farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisors. When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers need to do their homework and shop around, look online and ask other farmers and then make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. People should make sure that they are not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. That won’t make their farm any safer. What they actually need, is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving everyone. There’s no substitute for the unique knowledge the farmer, family and

workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation. What is most important is everyone on the farm is thinking about the risks and managing them, so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved, there is a positive impact on other parts of the business. While there are good health and safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified professional safety adviser — that may not be the first health and safety advisor they get talking to at the local field day. To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and safety professions, has developed a simple checklist.

ANDY DAHL

Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: • Which professional association do you belong to — can you confirm this? • What qualifications and/or certification do you have? • What relevant skills and experience do you have for this job? • Can you give me examples of similar work you have done recently? • Are you happy for us to contact your clients about your work for them?

CONTRACTING LTD

Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor. ‘Contractors and subcontractors have the same duty of care to their employees as any other employer. Contractors need to know what farmers’ health and safety procedures are, so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site and farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that workers face, and how the site will be made safe. www.shannonbulk.co.nz

Good planning, better grass and animals Spring is in the air for some rural contractors, as farmers are in discussion with them as to the best outcomes for pasture and autumn sowing keeps their equipment busy. Grazing animals find new pasture is more attractive and it is easier to manage during late spring and early summer, and getting the right mix in autumn sowing means a smoother farm life ahead. The Pasture Improvement Leadership Group led by DairyNZ, includes researchers, the seed industry, farmers and agricultural contractors. The group was formed to help tackle issues affecting pasture persistence and performance head-on. A number of research projects and initiatives are under way across different industry organisations and because new pastures are grazed more uniformly, it’s easier for farmers to control the quantity of residual dry matter when animals are moved. The optimum post-grazing residual means optimum ME regrowth and increased animal performance at the next productive grazing. New pastures consistently produce an average of 0.5 more megajoules of ME/kg DM — on top of the extra dry matter produced

by a new pasture. This is due to higher proportion of desirable species that are later and more uniform flowering with a leafier sward and fewer seed heads produced. Most new perennial ryegrass cultivars are available with new endophytes developed to solve particular problems in different regions. The endophyte occurring naturally in New Zealand ryegrass pastures — ‘standard’ or ‘wild’ endophyte — makes its host ryegrass plants resistant to some insect pests. New endophytes are continuing to be developed to maintain good animal health, while enhancing pest resistance. As well as Argentine stem weevil, new endophytes provide resistance to pasture mealy bug, black beetle and root aphid, with more pests likely to be added to this list. When DairyNZ carried out a threeyear study comparing pastures with the novel AR1 and standard endophyte — the former produced nine per cent more milksolids than the latter.

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Contractors save time Ensuring you have the right contractor for your particular needs can save a lot of time, worry and money when you live in the rural environment. Friends, family and neighbours are good to get recommendations of contractors they have used; as word of mouth is often the best recommendation you can get. Get a quote when hiring a contractor — they can often save you time and money, as they supply all the equipment necessary and come with experience and knowledge, saving you a lot of heartache and frustration. People often do not realise what can go wrong and the cost of the hiring or buying the correct equipment for the job can be very expensive. There are different types of contractors performing many different tasks and these include: plumbing, fencing, drainage, hay and silage

DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

making, planting crops, demolition and rubbish removal on properties. The contractor can discuss jobs they have completed in the area, if you would like to see work they have previously done. Remember communication is important and check that workers are qualified and have proved themselves to be fully capable in providing expert services for your particular project whether it be in a rural, residential or commercial capacity. Ask if they have guarantees and insurance on their workmanship and check how good their attention to detail is.

If it is rubbish removal, site preparation including plumbing, rural track or road forming and maintenance, stripping and excavation, metal and topsoil fill, drain laying, hole drilling, the redevelopment or removal of an orchard, they should be able to remove and dispose of any rubbish from the job. Check this is included in the price, as you do not want any surprise costs at the end of your contract. If it is hay or silage you need help with, these can be produced in large or small sized bales. Often small bales make feeding stock easier, particularly

if you are on a lifestyle block or just have a few animals. Small bales are a great alternative with benefits including the convenience to handle and feed out, no wastage and the wrapped bales can be stored outside. Local young farmers clubs can often help out as a fundraiser for their club. Contractors can save you time and money, but remember once the quote has been accepted, any other requests you have on top of this figure will mean extra costs so ensure you ask what extra costs will be incurred before commencing extra requests.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Design for the colder times Autumn is unfolding, soon to give way to winter and a reminder that a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun and is sheltered from prevailing winds — so the choice of site is a key decision. Find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year, by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square metre of unshaded northfacing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas, with service areas on the south side. Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun, so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night. Select appropriately sized and positioned windows: moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side. Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis. Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy. The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Simple house designs — for example, compact rectangular shapes and multilevel homes — have less external surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm. Good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills.

The important factors are: high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor, well in excess of minimum building code requirements. Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system is as energy efficient as possible. There are lots of log burners, pellet fires, heat pumps and flued gas heaters on the market, either as central heating systems or as individual heaters to heat areas of your house.

DAIRY

ADVERTORIAL

Lightweight milking cups monitoring milk flow Graham Smith, an Opunake dairy farmer, has experienced many benefits in his dairy shed since changing all his consumable equipment from rubber to DairyFlo urethane-based plastic, three seasons ago. Graham milks 250 cows on his 93ha farm in a 26 a side herringbone shed and is adamant he is far better off in many ways since changing his liners, tubing and LTB’s. “The most noticeable differences are the clear ‘see through’ aspect of the product and the lightweight compared to rubber. Operating a cluster is far easier on the arms and upper body and as the cow starts milking you can monitor the milk flow from each quarter as it enters the bowl. “With the material being non-absorbent the inside of the liner and tubing never deteriorate, as after each wash the surface is returned to how it was when new, similar to when kitchen utensils made of plastic are washed with detergent. This also greatly reduces the risk of bacteria and thermoduric problems. The product also is in the shed for a much longer lifetime than rubber and Graham has eliminated one full change of Dairyware over a measured period, proving its assured quality rating of 5,000 milkings. With DairyFlo products being less than half the cost of rubber and significantly less than any silicone alternative; the long-term cost saving is extreme. Other significant differences are that Graham has never had a liner barrel split and he notices that once cows settle to the liner change they ‘milk out’ better and move around less during milking, especially young heifers. Graham has DairyFlo liners fitted to his own shells. However, he has recently installed some clusters with DairyFlo Lightweight Strong Clear Plastic shells (a new product recently added to their

Wake-up call for red meat sector Alternative proteins are likely to become a major competitor to some of New Zealand’s red meat products and the sector must respond with a clear strategy, according to new research. The report commissioned by Beef and Lamb New Zealand found that although alternative proteins are currently manufactured in small volumes, largescale production of burger patties and mince is likely to be a reality within five years. The study says governments, investors and consumers are seeking alternatives to red meat because of sustainability, climate change and animal welfare concerns, among others.

The research demonstrates a strong future for the New Zealand red meat sector with a demand for naturally raised, grass fed, hormone free and antibiotic free red meat with consumers prepared to pay a premium for such products. Beef and Lamb CEO, Sam McIvor, says the research was commissioned to better understand shifts in food, production technology and consumer trends. “The technology to produce a consumer ready alternative protein burger is here and is pushing for commercial scale. However, the research clearly articulates the significant opportunities and prospects for the New Zealand sheep and beef sector, if we respond effectively to the rise of alternative proteins. “The same forces driving the significant investment and demand for manufacturing alternative proteins, including concerns about industrial farming, health and the

environment, offer us a chance to differentiate New Zealand red meat internationally.” He says free-range natural sheep and beef farming in New Zealand is a world away from intensive factory farming practices (feedlots) and ‘big food’, which has tarnished the reputation of red meat. “It’s vital we leverage our competitive advantage and rigorously protect it — grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free natural protein — to capture higher premiums and raise the value of our exports.” In the US alone, retail sales of labelled fresh grass fed beef including domestic and imports reached US$272 million in 2016 — sales are doubling every year. The sector is also continuing to improve its environmental performance. “We recognise that agriculture has an environmental impact and we are working to minimise this. “We’ve made some headway, as the carbon emissions from sheep and beef farming are actually 19 per cent lower than 1990 levels. We are perhaps the only sector currently meeting New Zealand’s 2030 target. “The global population is swelling with a forecast one billion extra people

Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ

to feed by 2030. New Zealand’s total agricultural production can only feed about 40 million people. We can’t and don’t want to try to feed the world. Alternative proteins will have a place in this growing market, as will red meat. “Far from it being a crisis for red meat, we see these trends as a tremendous opportunity and we want to focus on raising the value of our exports and on gaining higher premiums.”

Touring unplugged by Andy Bryenton

Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch. When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage. In an era when even Range Rover has a ‘crossover’ and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. But that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. But it’s also a plugin hybrid. With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons. This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres without using a drop of the go-juice, and even on the open highway you’ll sip a mere 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s a sum measured in the change under the seat. However, the Niro doesn’t fall into that other trap of frugal

hybrids — it’s not boring. In eco mode it may seem a touch leisurely, but hit sport and all 140 horsepower comes out to play. It’s no supercar, but it’s grininducing, especially as the electric

motor joins in much like an old school turbo used to, kicking in a surge of added fizz. The dual clutch sixspeed box keeps it smooth, while the twin power systems do their thing. Arriving here in March, the plug-in Niro

will join a pair of full-time hybrids in what is becoming a very interesting Kia range indeed. For those who are more concerned with the cutting edge than the prestige of a label, this is where the smart money sits.

Perfect placement reaps results by Andy Bryenton

As data and information about the most minute details of soil hydration and nutrient loading becomes a standard tool in the farmer’s arsenal, precision placement has become a key factor for fertiliser applicators. From a ‘shotgun’ approach in the distant past, the science of sowing crops has also come a long way, adopting a modern version of an ancient bright idea. The ancient Chinese invented the seed drill, thanks in part to the availability of hollow, strong bamboo tubes. Pushing the seed to the right depth in the soil, they found, made all the difference. Modern seed drills are a far cry from these early origins, boasting precision computer-guided control, massive capacity, and the means to open a furrow, pneumatically apply seed to the right depth at the right spacing, and then close the furrow, sometimes even applying a small dose of nutrients as well. It’s a great all-round system for seeding success, and a top example in the current market is the Gigante, produced by Maschio Gaspardo. This Italian company operate factories not just in their home country — where they were established back in the early 1960s — but also in the vast emerging

Pay attention!

around road works

markets of India and China. Making seed drills to feed the literal millions of these burgeoning economies, means they know how to make them big and make them reliable. The Gigante lives up to its name, but is able to fold up for highway transit. Where it makes its mark is in precision seed depth in adverse conditions, using a cast steel guide wheel and its own

impressive weight along with tungsten carbide scrapers to conquer rocky or wet fields. Combine this with the ability to change seeding depth easily, a massive capacity, and pneumatic power to literally ‘fire’ each seed right on target, and the whole Gigante system improves the chances of strong and healthy crops by a vast factor over broadcasting methods.

As bigger tractors roll out with the capacity to bring bigger implements to the field, machines like Maschio Gaspardo’s Gigante are an example of economies of scale built in solid steel. It’s a long way from a hollow tube of bamboo, but the concept is the same — a clever idea, well executed, to get more value from each square inch of soil.

A workhorse from China by Andy Bryenton

With the rise of side-by-side off-road vehicles as the all-purpose workhorse for farmers in New Zealand, you could be forgiven for thinking that the ‘U’ in UTV stands for ubiquitous. Everywhere you go, you’ll see these tough little vehicles spraying weeds, carrying fencing tools or herding livestock. Now a new contender in the market looks to open up the UTV option for even more farmers, with advantages over the traditional quad bike. CFMoto may be a new name in the field, but they come with a powerful entry into the market in the form of their UForce 550. The product of over 20 years of liquid cooled engine technology from one of the biggest manufacturing companies in China, the UForce range is a distillation of what farmers want from a side-by-side, concentrated into a product, which ticks all the boxes. Ground clearance, the ability to handle deep mud and tough terrain, a reliable, easy to service engine — it’s all here, in a package, which comes with a surprisingly economical price tag. The heart of the UForce 550 is a 498cc four valve, four-stroke liquid cooled engine developing 38 horsepower and 43 newton metres of torque. That’s plenty for most farming tasks, and combined with the low centre of gravity afforded by the placement of

the compact engine block it means that the UForce 550 is a stable platform for all kinds of rural chores. Seating for two with a wide and capacious tray in the rear means lots of options — 360 kilos of load capacity with two up. Add in a CVT transmission for smooth power delivery and the ability to switch from two to four wheel drive in the field, and you have a competent working machine ready to handle the hard knocks. What sets it apart from many contenders is the fact that this machine has not been engineered for hunting in the American wilderness or for recreational use on the trails — though it could accomplish either. Built in one of the world’s largest engineering and manufacturing centres, it’s been tested on the ground in some of the most demanding, isolated conditions of south Asia. Farms there have also seen

and often boast higher temperatures, deeper mud, worse roads and trails — the list goes on. If CFMoto can thrive in these conditions, they can excel on the farms of Northland.
