The fourth annual New Zealand AgriFood Week was held in the Manawatu recently, showcasing and celebrating New Zealand as a food-producing nation.

International keynote speaker Rob Ward opened the event to an audience of industry leaders, businesses and producers. Mr Ward is the founder and director of the world’s first food and drink accelerator, The Grocery Accelerator. Mr Ward said food and beverage brands from New Zealand are held in high regard among consumers in the United Kingdom and Europe. “New Zealand is incredibly good at what it does, but not enough people know about it.” He said British consumers have a big appetite for more food and beverages from New Zealand, in addition to lamb, wine and wool. “New Zealand is sitting on a goldmine of provenance; the country needs to get those stories across to the rest of the world.” Mr Ward’s experience in running accelerator programmes has led him to believe new food and beverage brands need to look at how the technology sector operates, and mimic how they build successful brands, quickly. New Zealand AgriFood Week was delivered by the Central Economic

Development Agency, in association with ASB and partnership with 18 other organisations, arranging workshops and events. Mr Ward’s trip was made possible through support from AgMARDT, a key partner of the week. “The diversity of this year’s events is a testament to our sponsors, partners and speakers and the appetite we have to more deeply connect with each other’s expertise,” said Central Economic Development Agency CEO, Linda Stewart. “The themes being discussed at New Zealand AgriFood Week events are central to driving change. “Involving younger generations in discussion and decision making, exploring what stories we are telling and whether these are the right ones for the right audience, and using data and insights to better understand what consumers are wanting, are all crucial to developing the country’s role as a global, high-value food producer.” New Zealand AgriFood Week culminated with visits to the Central Districts Field Days.

Palmerston North digger driver James Beamsley took out second place at the recent National Excavator Operator Competition. James competed against nine other regional champions from around New Zealand to become runner-up to Riki Lum from Whangarei. Held during the Central Districts Field Days, this year marked the 25th anniversary of the annual competition. The Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) organise the contest to raise awareness of the skill involved in excavator operation and the careers available in civil construction. The Manawatu Branch of Civil Contractors New Zealand created the competition in 1995. The national finals have been held in the Manawatu region ever since. Many of the original founding committee are still involved, including those who proposed, led and judged the first competition. James qualified for this year’s finals event by winning the Manawatu Regional Excavator Operator Competition held on the Railway Land in Palmerston North on March 3. The Central Demolition employee then drove a Hitachi Zaxis 120 excavator in front of the thousands of people attending the field days, as he battled for the title of New Zealand’s best multiskilled excavator operator. While some of the tasks performed by competitors were primarily about fun and delighting the crowd, they showcased the level of precision top operators required to excel in their daily work, whether they were navigating drain pipes, gas pipes or electricity cables. James has been employed at Central Demolition for the past four years. His

Last year was James’s first crack at the competition. CCNZ chief executive Peter Silcock said the competition’s mix of skill, entertainment and high-tech machinery had become a highlight for the industry. “Modern excavators are complex machines that take a lot of skill to

apiti Island is internationally renowned as a nature reserve, providing a home to endangered birds and other wildlife. Located five kilometres off-shore from Paraparaumu, the island is only accessible by boat. Along with running Kapiti Island Honey, the Barrett whanau operate an eco-tourism business called Kapiti Island Nature Tours. Pera Barrett, his father, sister and a cousin are all directors of the businesses. Acknowledging the hard

work their ancestors put into caring for the land is important to the whanau. “We want to share as much as we can of this special place, with the rest of Aotearoa and the world.” All activities are structured around the whanau’s guardianship of the island, to meet conservation, biosecurity and cultural needs. For decades, the whanau have also worked alongside the Department of Conservation. by the whanau. He works with some of the whanau to make beekeeping a sustainable practice on Kapiti Island. “It’s another way we can work for the island to ensure it grows and develops as a healthy ecosystem,” said Pera. Regular visits are made by the beekeeper to check the hives. Although the island is isolated, the bees are not immune to the risks faced by beehives on the mainland. Pera said their beekeeper takes his responsibility to the bees safety very seriously. Regular maintenance is undertaken and work on the hives’ health where needed. The Carniolan bee was chosen to produce Kapiti Island Honey, due to its strong defence of the hives against insect pests. This subspecies of the western honey bee is also known to be calm and non-aggressive. “Our super beekeeper makes the hives on the mainland and assembles them on the island,” said Pera. To ensure their bees have easy access to flowers without too much competition the whanau spread the hive centres out around the island. “Summer involves a little less work than the colder months, then in autumn it’s honey collection time.” Pera said the first spoonful of honey is always a highlight. “This year I was working after midnight New Year’s Eve, extracting the first box of the season. Cracking into the honeycomb with friends on New Year’s Day was well worth the effort.”

“Beekeeping and honey-selling are the rare kind of business where the more product you create, the better you’re doing for the land and the people. “It’s healthy food and it promotes regeneration and healthy land. We are already incredibly lucky to have this little slice of Kapiti Island to share with our guests through Kapiti Island Nature Tours. Having the job of connecting our busy little bees, with lovers of good honey, is just as special and important.” Since Kapiti Island Honey was founded in 2015, the whanau have all been involved in different roles. The kitchen table has become a gathering place to label stickers and place them on the jars. Pera takes care of the business website, while other whanau members help with the hives and explore options for their new Kapiti Island Botanicals range of products. The business is soon to launch this new range, which includes wellbeing and skincare products made from ingredients sourced on the island. Pera said the raw ingredients are taken from the island and processed in a commercial kitchen. “We try to keep our impact on the island as light as possible. “One of the best things about the island, and its nature reserve status is the lack of industrial pollution and small mechanical footprint. “Processing the honey on the mainland helps keep this the case.” Kapiti Island Honey and the new Kapiti Island Botanicals range of products are sold online and at various markets.

Pera said guests staying in the whanau’s lodge on the island are also able to take home a little piece of their experience. With the guardianship of Kapiti Island Honey foremost in the

Barrett whanau’s principles, Pera said the long-term plan is to carry on helping the bees make delicious honey. “It’s a whanau business, and we all play a part.”

L

ocated on the hills above the Kapiti Coast, the couple is continuing the breeding programme founded in 1886 by John’s great-grandfather, Joseph Taylor, in Christchurch. Joseph chose English Leicester to breed and sell rams to Merino and fine wool growers. Under the prefix Papanui, his flock was listed as stud number 11. At its peak production, the stud ran 1,900 ewes and 585 rams. The farm, originally

in Christchurch, now forms part of the residential suburbs of Harewood and Papanui. The English Leicester was among the earliest sheep imports to New Zealand. John said the rams were sought after as a first cross over Merino ewes to produce the mid-micron halfbred and Corriedale flocks. In 1921 all stock was moved to a new property acquisition in Waipara, North Canterbury.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Seven years later John’s grandfather, Ernest Taylor, purchased a highly fertile and irrigated farm on flat country, just north of Woodend. Ernest decided to name the farm Ravenswood after the former owner, Reverend Raven. Soon afterwards Ernest moved 443 ewes to the new property, establishing flock number 406 under the prefix Ravenswood. When Ernest passed away in 1950, John’s parents, Ivor and Margaret, carried on running the stud. They sold Ravenswood flock and stud rams all over New Zealand during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly to Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and the Manawatu. Farmers were using English Leicester rams to increase the wool weights of their Romney and Coopworth flocks. Ravenswood Stud has always aimed to breed true-to-type English Leicester, with clear open faces for the ewes to see without the hindrance of wool in their eyes. John said the stud also bred for strong, lustrous wool all over the sheep with lack of britch wool down the back legs. The wool is free of black fibre as well. John’s family found the English Leicester had a foraging ability which could withstand dry conditions, especially in Canterbury’s summers. The stud’s stock also had sound feet and legs, moving easily on hill country farms and avoiding footrot. Lambing was trouble-free with an average percentage of 120 to 140%. In 2016 Ivor passed away, leaving Margaret to run the stud single-handedly. She continued for a while and then made the decision to disperse the

entire stud two years later. As a result of the dispersal sale, two new English Leicester studs were formed; Sydney Shep in Wellington and C J Struthers in Waimate. John also selected seven young, true-to-type ewes and transported them by truck, and ferry across Cook Strait, to his property. “There are very few English Leicester studs remaining in New Zealand and could now be considered a rare breed,” he said. “We didn’t want the Ravenswood Stud to disappear forever. We could see a future in strong, lustrous wool. I believe the English Leicester wool is appealing for its length, shine (lustre) and strength,” said John. “The scales along the fibre make this wool excellent for the felting process.”

John and Fiona have found the breed copes well in extreme conditions and are excellent foragers. “Ewes will survive well through periods of summer dry and little feed,” “They cope well also in winter during prolonged wet, although they are very knowing animals. When winter arrives, and Fiona is baleage feeding them, they constantly look out for her.” said John. John said the breed doesn’t push through fences so are well suited to lifestyle blocks as well as farms. “They are a good dual purpose sheep — meat and wool, good temperament and easy handling sheep.” The Robinsons are members of the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Society and have attended English Leicester annual field days the past two years.

arissa and her two horses, Sprite and Popeye, headed north from Wellington in February, travelling along the west coast. She and a friend, Kendall, completed the South Island leg of the journey in 2016. The 31-year-old bought her first horse six years ago. Previously she had only occasionally ridden a friend’s pony and had a few riding lessons when her family lived in Germany. “I’ve still only ridden a handful of horses to this day, and I am a nervous rider,” said Larissa. “I am only confident doing this trek alone because I have my unicorn Sprite with me, who I trust with my life.”

Sprite is a nine-year-old Stationbred mare previously used for one season of mustering on a sheep station before Larissa bought her. “She had never been off the station, but she took highways, towns, playground and beaches in her stride within her first week, and has been my rock ever since.” Larissa’s other horse, Popeye, is a rising six-year-old Kaimanawa gelding mustered out of the Central Plateau as a foal. “He lost his right eye in a paddock accident at two years but has adapted well. during the trek.” Popeye’s main job is to be ponied along and keep Sprite company. He is also a second riding horse for people Larissa invites for sections of the ride. “I wanted to have Popeye along to give people a chance to meet and value a Kaimanawa,” said Larissa. “Also to inspire kids that they can do big things like Popeye can despite any challenges they might have.” Larissa always dreamed of completing a long journey on horseback. She said it was through chatting with Kendall that the idea to ride the circumference of New Zealand came about. A year after starting to prepare for the journey, the pair came across the Leg-Up Trust and decided to raise funds as they trekked. The trust, based in Hastings, teaches disadvantaged youth to engage and interact positively with horses. This form of equine therapy teaches young people how to build a relationship with a horse through grooming, feeding and general care. “Sprite wears a donation box on her chest, which the kids love to put coins in, but most of our donations are online via Leg-Up Trust’s Givealittle page givealittle.co.nz/org/bennyboy. “One of the most touching donations happened when we were walking through a winding, narrow section of road on the west coast. Someone must have passed us and wanted to donate but couldn’t stop safely. As we got to the bottom of the hill, we found a little pile of coins left on the white line on the side of the

road, with a note saying ‘donation’.” There have been numerous challenges and highlights throughout the journey. The trek has covered land that few people get to access. “We’ve camped in secluded bays and the middle of towns, and seen New Zealand in a different way to most. “It is something I’ll always treasure.” Larissa said the journey has restored her faith in humanity. “People have been so generous to us and taken care of us, and our horses, so well.” Although Larissa doesn’t have an exact route planned out, she aims to follow the coastline whenever possible. She plans up to a week ahead, talks to the locals and studies maps as she travels. It is hoped the North Island leg of the trek will be completed within a year. “I’ll continue until it’s done and it has to be flexible to allow for anything that could happen.” After packing up and weighing saddlebags to ensure they are equalised, Larissa aims to leave camp around 9am for each day’s trek. The finishing point depends on the difficulty of the terrain covered that day. She frequently stops to allow the horses to graze. “My goal every day is to find the horses a paddock to stay in so they can relax properly. I’ll camp anywhere I can but sometimes I’m lucky to be given a woolshed or spare room to sleep in, and a good feed is an extra bonus. “On the South Island trek, there were only a handful of times where we didn’t

find a paddock and carried a small amount of fence tape, which we strung around trees for overnight grazing. We didn’t sleep very well those nights, and the horses did break out one time.” Larissa’s adventures can be followed on her Facebook page homefree.

Award-winning highlights The team at Central Mowers in Palmerston North have celebrated eight years in business this March. As Robert and Megan reflect on the highs and lows during that period. The highs included the great team that they have around them who are more like family than employees and winning awards year after year for national sales in the Big Dog mower brand. Lows have been mainly related to Mother Nature. During the past eight years, they have weathered floods, droughts and everything in-between! March 1 was Central Mowers’ official birthday and also a double celebration of both St Patrick’s day and Rob’s birthday as well as taking part in the Central Districts Field Days supporting the brands that they stock. Megan thinks that the Central Districts Field Days are just as good if not better than the National Fieldays held in June with a great location, and it’s easy to get around. The field days showcased an extensive range of outdoor power equipment and were an excellent opportunity for Megan and Rob to meet current and new customers within the greater Manawatu region. Back at the shop on Tremaine Avenue, the team has specials on throughout the next month to celebrate their birthday including specials on Masport, Ole-Mac and Solo as well as giveaways in store. Oleo-Mac is a fairly new range for Central Mowers. Italian designed and engineered, home users and professionals choose it for its superior quality, and they stock a broad range from entry level chainsaws and trimmers through to commercial products. Rob and the boys are on hand to offer advice on which product suits you and your specific needs. As a family-owned and community focussed business, they believe that their success and the growth in their business has been from having a

focus on not only excellent customer service but the ability to be open and honest with customers when it comes to what they need. If it is time to send their beloved machines off to ‘garden heaven’ or if they can breathe new life into them, they will let you know. Rob has exceptional mechanical skills amassed during the past 32 years in the industry, so there’s not much that can stump him. If you are in need of new outdoor power equipment or repairs and servicing on your machinery – call in and say hi, or find us at www.centralmowers.co.nz. See our advertisement on page 1.

Immigration specialists help forests We are busy with visa applications for forestry workers and silviculturists, due to increased forest sector activity. The government’s focus on tree planting, a zero-carbon economy, and carbon incentives have seen our forestry grow to near capacity. Clients ask how they can import skilled workers for forest regeneration work, including silviculturists eager to learn, but who do not have sufficient skills or experience to qualify for a work visa. Silviculture migrant staff need an ANZCO 4 classification to qualify to work in New Zealand. It means they must have a level two NZQA qualification or at least one year’s relevant forestry experience. Some candidates are declined because of the lack of skills or work experience, and this has created a skill shortage. Fortunately, a new worker classification has been approved by Immigration New Zealand, known as the ANZCO level five Bush Regenerator. That is good news because the ANZCO 5 classification has a much simpler entry requirement. A Bush Regenerator is someone who plants trees to regenerate a forest. The required skill-set does not include chainsawing, as is required for tree pruning or trimming. This job is a low-skilled role for seasonal tree planting. It gets more interesting, to get the application over the line, you may be required or may choose to offer on-thejob training for health and safety and planting techniques. If the worker can do more training while in New Zealand, then he or she could potentially increase his or her skills to an NZQA level two, which will bump them to a level four

WE’RE BUILT FOR THIS.

ANZCO. The employer can then apply for a subsequent work visa for that worker as a silviculturist. With the right training and opportunity, an employer can grow its silviculturist team from the Bush Regenerators brought into New Zealand. Our immigration specialists are eager to help with your work visa applications. Dewhirst Law takes the paperwork away, so you can get on with growing your business and your team. MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

The most positive week of the year by Ian McKelvie, MP for Rangitikei

It would be hard to imagine a more positive time for the Central Districts region than the recent week that has seen the Hilux Rural Games, Agri-tech Week and the 26th Annual Central Districts Field Days. Once again the Rural Games were highly entertaining and a rare opportunity for the rest of the country to see just what skills are needed in Heartland New Zealand and the fun that can be had in taking part. It’s great to see the games now on nationwide television in the form of a half-hour programme because it’s important for all New Zealanders to have the chance to see what goes on in the rural sector. With an Aucklandised media environment, that doesn’t happen often enough in my opinion. Agri-tech Week puts the spotlight on the innovation and hard work that is going on throughout the region in all areas of the primary industries. Success has been celebrated, and the good stories told. The nett result is that Palmerston North is emerging as the Agri-tech capital of New Zealand. Central Districts Fieldays began in the mid-1990s with about 60 stall-holders. This year this premier event attracted an amazing 600 exhibitors to Manfeild. The weather came right, and the atmosphere for a rural event was positive with 70 per cent of visitors coming from outside the Manawatu.

Also, with an eye to future employment, 350 secondary school students (from Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay) got an introduction to a possible future working in the rural sector. They were not just talking about it; they were out there doing it! It was a student initiative that has culminated with the publishing of a fun, ruralflavoured children’s book about a digger. The success of these events reflects well for the region. The amount of work behind the scenes to make things run smoothly is incredible, and I know that field days takes a total of 22 days from first set-up to final sign out. A huge ‘well done’ to everyone involved in all of these events.

If you want to build your own house and you are not a licensed builder, you have to get an owner-builder exemption. Ask the council for information they have about your property they can tell you about local and regional plans, and how they might impact on your project. You might need to apply for resource consent or other permits specific to your area. The more you know, the better prepared you will be, your plans will be better informed, and you might save time and money by making a good building consent application. You could also avoid the need to make last minute changes or costly amendments during construction. Building on an empty section is more complicated than altering or renovating an existing house. It involves more paperwork and legal processes whether you build from scratch or move a house onto the section.

When buying a section find out about and land use restrictions, district plan rules, resource consents and land survey and find out about your land and whether your ideas will work, including consents or permits you might need to meet legal restrictions. Once you have got an idea of what you want to build, you can also purchase a project information memorandum (PIM) from your council. A PIM can

help you decide whether your planning and building project is possible and practical, and will help you and your designer create effective plans. You might also find useful information in a land information memorandum (LIM), often purchased prior to buying a property. However, it’s not projectspecific and may be out of date. Your most up-to-date information will come directly from your council.

Timeframes and costs Building or renovating a home can be a complicated task, and it is recommended before purchasing a section to build a new home on, you should research the section and consider how its location could affect building costs. Most new builds come with plans and are pre-priced with all costs included, double check before starting that this is the case and there are no hidden costs. Ask who is liable for extras if the builders do not do their job correctly as you do not want to be charged for their mistakes or slack workmanship. Ask the right questions and make sure your tradesperson isn’t telling you what they think you want to hear. Check your timeframes and budget are realistic and that what you want to be done is possible for your house. Verify any potential contractors’ references and if they have done similar projects before and if they can start and finish when they say they can. Ask what other jobs they are working on at present and have clarification of who will be doing the work; themselves or an apprentice or subcontractor. Make sure the brief is clear and meet with your tradies to discuss the details of the brief. Ideally, have a document everyone can refer to throughout the project, and

update it when things change. Make sure everyone has a clear understanding of the required level of quality and finish, who is responsible for what and the contract terms. Be as detailed as you can be from the start and specify things like where lights and powerpoints should go, list all the different appliances and confirm with your main contractor who needs to do what for each item. Confirm as much as you can before work starts, and make sure that anything that is important to you or that involves a lot of money is in writing. Missing information can cost, for example, if a kitchen renovation goes over budget because you haven’t confirmed with the main contractor at the outset, that you need an instant hot water tap installed and additional outdoor light. Put such requests in writing to be included in the quote. Once the job is finished, check you are given you all the paperwork and warranties relating to the work. Keep

any certificates such as energy work certificates from an electrician or

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Finding good contractors Finding the right contractor can mean the difference between being satisfied or not when it comes to getting work done on your property. Whether you own a lifestyle block or farm, hiring a professional can help ease the workload, save you on equipment and maintenance costs and free your time for other things you need to do. Contractors generally have the training and make the job look easy because they have all the necessary tools and experience for jobs including silage and haymaking, fencing, drilling and cultivating, applying fertiliser, harvesting crops, doing maintenance or building. Secure fencing of your property boundaries for stock, ensuring your hay and silage is harvested correctly, and creating drains and tracks, reroofing buildings or other necessary chores means you need confident, reliable workers. Almost all reputable businesses have good newspaper advertising to let people know they are available so this is a good place to start along with asking friends and neighbours whom they recommend. When you are enquiring with the contractor ask if they can show you examples of their work and provide references of people you may be able to call. Do they use quality materials

and ask about their guarantees and warranties and do they belong to an overseeing organisation. Questions such as what experience they have are just as important — not only for the wider farming operation but also your home. The contractor should be more than willing to give references because people with the first-hand experience with a company you choose to engage will often verify the quality of service

and workmanship you will receive. This information helps you form a more accurate picture of the contractor’s business dealings and how the company has handled complaint resolution if there have been any issues with work previously done. Doing your homework before you engage someone to carry out tasks can help avoid any unnecessary delays and will give you confidence that you have done all you can to get the job done well.

LANDSCAPING | BUILDING | FENCING

Fencing contractors can cater to a vast variety of fencing requirements on different properties, from the standard post and batten to more artistic creations. If you have the old batten fences that have moss all over them and they are in disrepair, it is often cheaper to get a whole new one built and doing this means it should have a good 20 year lifetime. Different animals need different types of fence. For example, sheep need seven wire batten, but with cattle, you can get away with five wires, and you can make it electric. If it is a boundary fence, you require at least a seven wire batten. Bulls need solid fencing to keep them in because they get boisterous and if they fight each other, they can easily break through a fence and also need electric fences. With rural fencing, including lifestyle blocks, a contractor can place internal fences anywhere the owner requires them to be located, and they can make more creative styles, which add flair to a property as well. New lifestyle block owners often discover that they do not have enough fences. Sometimes a fence is too close to a house, or you need a paddock rearranged, reduced in size or made larger. Fences are relatively easy to establish, but it is important they are made correctly. Normally rural blocks have post and rail or the standard seven wire batten fence. A fence can be simple or extravagant; it generally depends on

members annually and the association employs a permanent, part-time chief executive based in Wellington — close to government and other organisations where a close liaison is maintained. Rural Contractors supports and promotes training and education in the industry. The main focus is on training, which is administered by industry training organisation Connexis New Zealand. Connexis supplies training to the infrastructure sector of which rural contracting is a part. Details and advice on rural contracting training options can be found on the Connexis website or through Rural Contractors NZ. Primary ITO also has courses available such as the National Certificate in Fencing — level two or three both electric and non-electric.

The courses cover every position in every primary industry, so you will find the course that is right for you and where you want to be including the dairy, horticulture, meat and fibre, seafood industry and primary services. Learning the skills to drive a big, expensive piece of farm machinery, and adding to your knowledge base in a specialised way, means opportunities can open up here in New Zealand and across the world. As most people know there is a demand for New Zealand shearers but the same applies to operate rural contracting equipment, and you can work your way around the world, season by season in countries where there is work available for skilled operators.

Effluent irrigation specialists

Golden Bay Dolomite NZ’s most loved magnesium.

Duncan from Tararua Effluent Irrigation Specialists (TEIS) has served the lower North Island’s dairy industry for 15 years. Using a high volume European pump and lay flat hoses to an irrigation cannon mounted on a tractor TEIS can provide you with a cost-effective way to empty your effluent storage pond with minimal interference to the day to day running of your farm. As the effluent is pumped from the pond through up to 1,000m of hose to the paddock you don’t have the inconvenience of equipment going up and down your races and in and out of gateways. That means you don’t have to spend money fixing the damage to races, fences and gateways. TEIS pride themselves on providing the best value service and work with their customers to ensure the maximum benefit can be achieved from bringing the valuable nutrients in the effluent to your farm. Effluent has been regarded as a byproduct of dairy farming, and Duncan says if it were renamed semi-organic fertiliser everyone would want it. “It’s a valuable resource on-farm and applied correctly, the benefits are fantastic,” he says, adding with the change in seasons and the industry it’s more important now to ensure the farmers get the best value from effluent they can.

Effluent pond pumping is only part of the solution, and TEIS also offers effluent system consulting and management. We can take the stress away by ensuring the ponds have always got storage capacity and as there is no establishment fee the frequency of visits has no additional cost. We also offer placement of irrigation and TEIS can

Sweeping sheds clean Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the manure build-up from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution. Mark was giving a friend a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine. The day was terrible and wet and it didn’t work — you spent all your time unblocking it. Mark thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t. He asked himself a few questions and came up with a hydraulic driven rotary hoe system that can grind off the hardest of deposits. It is driven in up the pile line where it digs and once full is

hauled out. Every time we trialled it we saw ten things wrong but one thing that worked so we kept pushing ahead. The Clean Sweep machine was developed. It is versatile and can work on wet ground whereas a sucking machine clogs.

SIS BALL COCK VALVE Price $99.50+GST EACH Freight free anywhere in NZ

Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons. By using the Clean Sweep machine, you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach 20 to 30 metres. Clean Sweep Woolsheds assess every job prior for quoting. Clean Sweep Woolsheds is making the job simple for farmers, and they don’t have to handle it themselves. The end product is a great fertiliser that the client keeps. Some people give it to the

local school or club to sell, or they can spread it onto their paddocks. It is important to have a clean shed, and it creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight; it also decreases wool staining and most of all it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate. Clean Sweep Woolsheds also clean the count-out pens. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well.

The power of three by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three. It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki is the master of the triple layout. Bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow more than 900kgs and pack 450

into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort, carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice, but many, as they say, make light work. Think about what could be accomplished with three experienced workers and all those hundreds of kilos of tools and equipment. Now imagine that capacity deployed pretty much anywhere on the farm. This go-anywhere capability is enhanced by a wide stance for stability even on sloping terrain, and a shorter wheelbase for agility and a tiny turning circle. With a two metre wheelbase, the Mule Pro FXR can turn within just a hair more than four metres. That’s tight, and it makes it easier to access hard to reach places not only in the field but in the barn or the yard as well.

Triple threat — the Kawasaki Mule packs in an extra crew member for those big tasks and excursions

A civilised kind of beast The ute is the new sports utility vehicle. That’s the message, which is resonating through the automotive world alongside the trend that the sports utility vehicle is the new family car. As those who want to work and play hard switch from big off-roaders to a new breed of quieter, more comfortable and capable utes, the array to choose from has become vast. The ideal balance for new ute buyers is struck between practicality and price. That’s where SsangYong come in they have carved out a niche with their Actyon utes and the Rexton SUV, climbing in popularity alongside fellow South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia as Kiwi motorists embraced non-Japanese build quality and affordability. Branching out recently with characterful vehicles like the Tivoli crossover, the company, which has been in business since the 1950s, and once provided the South Korean fire department’s fleet has turned all of its experience and design skill to producing a ute, which can match or exceed everything in its class. The Rhino has more than a catchy name. It looks muscular and powerful, with strong

Oi!

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Refined but practical, the Rhino hits the right spot between car-like quiet and full powered utility

lines and bold wheel arches supporting a swept-back cabin design and a large no-nonsense tray. Available with a twolitre petrol engine in its two-wheel drive entry level only, the bulk of the spectrum of choices for this ute pack in 4x4 on demand and a Euro-6 compatible 2.2l diesel powerplant, designed to be smooth and quiet while still allowing an impressive 2.8 tonne towing capacity.

A six-speed box, auto or manual, delivers crisp gear changes to further enhance that sense of effortlessness, while great care and attention have gone into isolating engine noise and road noise for a more relaxing drive. The result is a refinement of the formula, which made the Actyon capable and work-ready the Rhino adds further sophistication. Impressively, it does

so without sacrificing any of the tech and safety features modern drivers demand. At a price which, even for the middle-of-the-range Sport Diesel 2.2 6 speed manual, just touches $35k. Even better, every Rhino ute sold helps its endangered namesake in the wild, with donations from each truck helping take down poachers and protect the Rhino’s habitat.
