estpac New Zealand chief executive Catherine McGrath said the rescue helicopter crews are working harder than ever to save lives. “Accidents and illnesses can affect any of us at any time,” she said. “Knowing help could be only minutes away, even in some of our most remote locations, is so important in a country as diverse as ours. “When we’ve learned over the last couple of years that we can live, work and explore from almost anywhere, knowing the chopper crews are there for you when you need them is so important. “We know that living is getting more expensive, so every dollar donated is incredibly appreciated. All money donated in your region goes straight to your local chopper service, so you know that your donation is supporting your community.” More than 9,500 missions were flown nationwide in 2021. Each average mission costs $9,500, and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter’s budgeted annual cost of service delivery is close to $3.97 million. Around 70% of this comes from a government contract. The remainder comes from the support of sponsors and the community’s generosity. Rural contractor Colin Howes strongly believes that living rurally, and working in remote locations, it is important to support his local rescue helicopter. After driving home one day, Colin stopped at the end of his long drive to collect his mail and suddenly became breathless. Colin had a chest infection at the time, but not wanting to put anyone out, he was waiting for his appointment to see his busy local GP. He didn’t realise
how bad his chest infection had become until that day. Out of breath, Colin quickly rang his son, who lives 10 minutes away. Colin realised he needed help sooner than his son could get to him, so he rang 111. A first responder arrived, then the ambulance, by which time Colin thinks he must have blacked out. He then heard the sound of the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter overhead. Colin remembers the huge relief, knowing how skilled the crew on the rescue helicopter were. It was the second time Colin had been rescued by the highly trained and skilled chopper crew. The first time was about six years ago when Colin badly broke his ankle in a truck accident. The rescue helicopter was first on the scene of the crash. Colin speaks highly of the rescue helicopter crew. He arrived at Palmerston North Hospital with speed, and after a few days on intravenous antibiotics, he was thankful to be back on the land. “You never know when you are going to need help, but when you do, it’s good to know I contribute to the rescue helicopter,” he said. He strongly encourages all rural folk to donate to the vital service the rescue helicopter provides. Westpac funds the marketing and administration costs of the Chopper Appeal. People wishing to make a donation or find out more information can visit chopperappeal.co.nz. Alternatively, donations can be made via the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter website give. rescue.org.nz or phone the team on 0800 111 010 to set up a payment.

Partnership to boost on-farm research
May 2022
by Denise Gunn
A partnership between Massey University’s Dairy 4 Farm and AgResearch will boost on-farm research capabilities and facilities in the lower North Island. The Dairy 4 Farm, located adjacent to Massey’s Manawatū campus, is the larger of the university’s two farms, with close to 600 spring calving cows. Construction of a feed pad continued through autumn, with the finish date earmarked towards the end of May. It brings work on the farm close to completion, enabling the facility to provide scope for a range of independent trials to operate at any one time. The facility will also allow greater interaction between Massey University and AgResearch staff and students. Head of Massey University’s School of Agriculture and Environment, Professor Paul Kenyon, said the new facilities would enable detailed research projects on the farm to be carried out at the same time as usual operations. “The new facilities will boast two rotary milking platforms, which will allow detailed research projects to take place alongside the farm’s daily operations. Other new facilities include a covered veterinary area for individual cow measurements and a multi-lane feed pad to enable differential feeding to various groups of cows. There will also be an effluent treatment system, a data centre within the shed to store and manage research data, a teaching room and a biosecurity station. “The partnership with AgResearch will help Massey built on its reputation of contributing world-leading pure and applied research, in partnership with
industry, on matters that are of national and international interest including environmental impacts of climate change, biosecurity issues, animal welfare issues and economic threats posed by innovations in food production.” AgResearch science objective leader and principal scientist Dr David Pacheco said it is rewarding to see the progress at the farm after the decision several years ago to invest with Massey in its development. “With the expanded facilities available to us at the Dairy 4 Farm, we will be able to grow our science in critical areas such as greenhouse gas research, animal nutrition and health, through to finding ways to increase the value of New Zealand’s dairy products. “Our partnership with Massey means we can make the most out of combining our resources and expertise, while the close physical proximity of the farm to our respective facilities in Palmerston North makes everything simpler and more efficient. That close collaboration also means together, we can develop the next generation of researchers to tackle the complex issues that New Zealand and the globe are facing. “All of this benefits our dairy industry in New Zealand, and ultimately, New Zealand as a leading international dairy producer.” The Dairy 4 Farm, which has been in operation for almost 46 years, is well known for its research into nutrient losses

Welsh Black cattle have featured in Penelope Waugh’s life since she was a child, visiting her grandparents’ farm at Tuatapere.

here is even a photo of me sitting on a calf when I was a kid. They are really quiet and good-natured,” said Penelope. It wasn’t long before Penelope’s parents, Margaret and Edwin, also became interested in the breed. The couple has continued breeding horned Welsh Blacks. They run a small herd on their Tapawera farm and are active members of the Welsh Black Cattle Breeders Society New Zealand.

The couple had earlier returned from their OE, where they viewed the breed at the Royal Welsh Show. Penelope said the Welsh Blacks have been in Wales since the Middle Ages. “They are a good hill country breed, with a willingness to forage and convert rough

The ewes on the flats go to a terminal ram and those lambs all to the works. We fatten 70 to 80 two-year-old steers annually,” said Andrew. The Welsh Blacks are a personal interest herd within the couple’s commercial farming operation.

feed into weight gain. Their winter coat gets a bit long and shaggy but smooths out a bit over the summer. Occasionally there is a red throwback gene that appears too.” Welsh Blacks were introduced to New Zealand during the 1970s. The breed is known for strong maternal instincts and generally calves easily. Andrew and Penelope farm two properties in partnership with Andrew’s parents, with 400 acres of flat country

The couple has found straight Welsh Black cattle gentle-natured and easy to work with
“We raise all the calves, keeping the best heifer replacements, and all steers, bulls and other heifers are sent to the works at around two and a half years old. Most of the bull calves are steered, but we do keep some of the best as bulls to see how they grow out, and in case anyone in the society needs an unrelated bull.” For the first couple of years, Andrew and Penelope used AI to grow their stock numbers before buying bulls from other Welsh Black breeders. “My husband really likes Shorthorns, so we are in our fourth year of diversifying a bit by crossing a Shorthorn bull over the cows. The cross seems to grow out really well, but their temperament is not quite as laid back. So we are thinking it’s
time to move back to straight Welshy,” said Penelope. “The marbling in the meat is good, and they taste great. Our butcher always comments on the quality of the meat. The Shorthorn cross produces a beast of any colour, from black to red and white and any possible option in between. No cross seems to look the same.” The couple still bring in some stock from Penelope’s parents from time to time. “A straight Welshy is a gentle-natured breed and easy to work with. Naturally, they are horned, but we prefer the polled line,” said Andrew. Andrew said the Black Welsh do well on the hills and get fat off anything.

“We have to take care not to overfeed them on the flats, but on the hills where they calve, they are great at cleaning up and maintaining excellent condition, even on the rougher hill country.” When the calves are weaned around May, they are brought down to the flats to graze on a crop for the winter and integrate with the steers. “We keep the best-looking heifers, culling for size, temperament or anything we don’t like the look of.” Calving, weaning and weighing is a family affair, and the couple’s children always get a kick out of these tasks. Andrew and Penelope think people would be surprised to know Welsh Blacks always weigh heavier than they appear.
“It’s always been nice to see some of our favourite calves grow out, and the fun of seeing what the crossed calves look like has been a laugh. They look like liquorice allsorts. “Welshies are just lovely, and it’s nice in farming to do something for pure enjoyment.”

Five generations of the Clifton family have farmed their 870ha (500ha effective) property since purchasing the first block in 1912.
O
riginally the Rangiwahia farm, located under the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges, was divided into 200-acre blocks and milked by several families. Each paddock has been named to represent those families. Andrew and Naomi Clifton, along with their two children, Cohen and Keeliarn, are the fifth and sixth generations on the farm. The Clifton family has a long association with Poll Dorsets. Andrew’s grandfather Eric initially ran Dorset Horns. He and another farmer, RV Pratt, travelled to Tasmania in 1957 to purchase six Poll Dorset ewes and two rams. In 1959, Te Kawa Poll Dorset Stud was registered with the New Zealand Sheepbreeders’ Association as Flock Number Two. Andrew said the stud’s primary focus is to breed and sell rams with a high growth rate, a meaty carcass and the ability to thrive in any environment.
The stud aims to produce high growth weight rams with a meaty carcass
“I have been performance-recording with SIL since 1995. With the use of the information from SIL, we have been able to consistently increase the performance of our flock by selecting high ranking rams that are structurally sound, with the traits we are looking for.
We have also sourced proven sires from within the Mega Meat group and other Poll Dorset breeders.” Andrew said the Mega Meat group is a great way to keep up linkages with other Poll Dorset breeders. He is also on the Poll Dorset Breed Committee.

The Clifton family on their Rangiwahia farm
“I believe the Poll Dorset breed has a great future in the sheep industry as a terminal sire or utilised partially in a maternal flock. Over the last mating season, we used Poll Dorset rams over all our commercial ewes, which are half Poll Dorset, to take advantage of growth rates and their milking ability. This allows us to shear only once a year.” The farm currently runs 3,200 stock units made up from 40% sheep, 39% deer and 21% cattle. Lambing starts at the beginning of October, with the first draft of lambs sold in mid-January. All store lambs are off the property by the start of April. Angus cattle and red deer are also a good fit within the farming operation. “We find Angus are hardy and well suited to our conditions.” Towards the end of October, calving begins. Steer calves and surplus heifers are sold in the May weaner fairs.
Andrew said the red deer hinds suit the grass growth pattern, but they have to supplement the velveting stags. Hinds start fawning in late November, and weaner stags are sold in July. Baleage is bought in for all stock. “The higher quality baleage sourced is used for the deer and sheep when needed. Two hectares of kale and swedes are for the deer. Four hectares of kestrel kale will be used for the sheep and cattle. Another six hectares of raphno is for the sheep.” Weather plays a major role in the Clifton’s farming operation, and the farm was hit hard by a snowstorm several years ago. “The devastating snowstorm that hit in 2017 not only affected us, but many in our district and beyond,” said Andrew. With stock stuck in snowdrifts, Andrew and Naomi battled to get to them. The

heavy snowfall also destroyed most of their woolshed and many other buildings, infrastructure, yards, fences, trees and electricity connections. “We are proving that our stock is resilient, but so are we over some very trying times.” Farm improvements are ongoing, with new fence lines put in to make certain paddocks more manageable. Upgrading the four-wire electric fences is in the pipeline as well. A system to
ensure all farm waste is recycled is also underway. Watching the stud’s progress and performance are among the Clifton family’s farming highlights. All their Poll Dorset sale rams are achieving above the SIL national average for terminal worth. Andrew said their short-term goal is to continue supplying their Poll Dorset rams that are performing well. “We want to increase the legacy of Poll Dorset Te Kawa flock number two.”

Taranaki-Manawatū FMG Young Farmer of the Year David Reesby is preparing for the grand final
Taranaki-Manawatū regional winner David Reesby will be putting in the hard yards in the lead-up to the competition. “You don’t know what to expect in the grand final,” said David. “So, I will be giving it my all and will be trying to study hard.” The 21-year-old is second-in-charge on his family’s Oroua Downs dairy farm and is a Marton Young Farmers member. Two FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year teams will represent Taranaki/ Manawatū at the national competition. William Russell and Levi Fleming from Feilding High School won the regional contest, with Nikki Baker, also from Feilding High School, and Jade Askin from Palmerston North Girls’ High School, placing second. Fourteen teams from around New Zealand will compete in the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year. Feilding High School agricultural science teacher and co-head of the TeenAg Club Kain Nixon said students
would undertake theory and practical days organised by the school. “They will be doing a practical day with a local farm trainer where they will go over basic farm skills like fencing, water systems and livestock management practices. “The theory days will cover theory and identification in areas of agriculture such as agronomy and fertiliser, for example. This will again be led by local companies like H&T Agronomics.” Students will also study independently during their own time. “Learning and developing their skills as a team will be crucial for a successful outcome at the grand finals. They need to find out each other’s strengths and weaknesses so they are clear with who does what during each module at the grand final.” Huntley School will send two teams to the AgriKidsNZ grand final. Jonty Skerman, Alex Jamieson and Tom Gilbertson of the
Huntley Hill Lovers team won the regional contest. The Huntley Hurricanes team made up of Hugo Skerman, Fred Whisker and Fergus Amon took the runner-up spot. Hiwinui School’s team, Hiwinui Hunterways, with Logan Rod Baker, Tabitha Fern Askin and Cooper McKenzie, will also travel to the grand final after placing third in the regional event. A total of 21 teams will compete for the 2022 AgriKidsNZ Champions title. Huntley School team coordinator Kym Skerman said the teams planned to spend a couple of hours a week for the first half of the term going over possible topics that could be included in the final. “Then ramping it up a bit more as we get more information about the modules/ topics that questions could be based on. During the second half of the term, they will add in some on-farm practical sessions at some of the students’ home farms.” The grand final will be held from July 7–9.

ADVERTORIAL
Resource utilisation reduces fertiliser costs by Nick Calow, Nevada Effluent Management Specialist
Effluent is becoming a hot commodity when it comes to farm fertilisation. The rising cost of synthetic fertilisers has highlighted the value of recycling the free nutrients naturally produced on-farm. Here are some ways farmers can utilise their effluent and cut down on synthetic fertilisers: Expand your reach Slurry tankers and drag hose systems are rising in popularity for farmers wanting to cart their effluent over the entire farm. Fitted with low-pressure applicators like a RainWave, they have reduced volatilisation and wind drift compared with most irrigators and allow for better spreading control. It means more effluent is making it to the ground for nutrient absorption. You can spread into irregularly shaped paddocks and closer to waterways than the typical irrigation system would allow. Utilise your feed Cattle feed can add to the nutrient value of the effluent produced. Rather than nutrients solely being recycled from grass to cow, any additional feed will provide beneficial outside nutrients back into the system. Use it all Slurry tankers can suck up nutrients from more than just the effluent pond. Use the slurry tanker for cleaning up
“Slurry tankers can suck up nutrients from more than just effluent pond.” thick feed pad slurry, cleaning out troughs, sumps and under-barn storage — anywhere! Spread more effectively Effluent breaks down faster than synthetic fertilisers, allowing cows to get back to grazing. It also helps with building soil structure for summer, improving moisture retention. That means effluent can be spread more frequently. Time is money, so some ways you can spread faster without compromising effectiveness are: Take the slurry tanker when locking cows back in the paddock after milking and make the most of your time A drag hose system is very effective in pumping out large volumes quickly Investing in a diesel pump can allow more irrigators to run at the same time for faster spreading over multiple areas

SHEAR
DETERMINATION BY DENISE GUNN
A working holiday around New Zealand in 2004 led Alun Jones to take a keen interest in shearing and an ongoing career in the industry.
Alun competed regularly in New Zealand and Welsh shearing competitions in his younger years
W
elsh-born Alun grew up on a farm in Wales, where he was expected to regularly help out with various chores. After finishing high school, Alun studied agriculture for two years at the Carmarthenshire Agriculture College in West Wales, gaining a National Diploma in Agriculture.
When Alun travelled to New Zealand, the lure of farming continued to beckon, and he picked up general farm worker positions in Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty. It was while working in the Gisborne area, Alun became interested in shearing. “I enjoyed the skill of the work,” he said. A four-day shearing course run by Tectra near Palmerston North equipped Alun with the necessary skills to gain a spot in a shearing gang. Starting on a learner stand in a shearing gang took him to woolsheds all over the Gisborne and Wairoa districts. After three to four months shearing around Poverty Bay, Wairoa and the East Cape, Alun returned to the United Kingdom to shear in Scotland and Wales. A stint shearing in South Australia followed before heading back to New Zealand.

“It was the typical cycle at the time.” While shearing full-time, Alun always aimed to become more proficient with consistent tallies. He remembers shearing his first 400 sheep in a day as a huge career highlight. He then managed to top this personal best tally, notching up a total of 500 sheep. In his younger years, Alun was a regular competitor in New Zealand and Welsh shearing competitions. “I was shearing at Taumarunui, the Royal Welsh Show, the Royal Highland Show, Taihape and Apiti Shows,” said Alun. “I entered into shows, not for the competitive aspect but general fun. I enjoyed watching the more skilled competitive shearers in their respective categories.”
Alun’s interest in shearing began during a working holiday to New Zealand in 2004
In 2011 Alun moved to Manawatū, where he met and married Margaret. Alun then decided to take a break from working in shearing gangs and the associated travel involved, as this took him away from home for long periods of time.

The upcycle of it all
by Liz Clark
Have you ever had a situation where you’ve got an accumulation of empty glass jars and lids sitting in a box? Before sending them off to the recyclers, keep a few jars back to make a garden in miniature or grow your kitchen herbs in. It’s also a fun way to keep children, grandchildren and yourself occupied during weekends, school holidays and wet winter days. Here are a few ideas for those surplus jars and other items you may have lying around the house. Herbs in the kitchen If you’re one of those cooks that love fresh flavour in a meal or salad, this is one way to have a year-round supply of readyto-pick or cut herbs right at your fingertips. First, find a few matching jam jars and fill them with a base layer of gravel or decorative stones. It will provide drainage for the plants that will be put in. Fill with a good amount of potting mix and place the plant in. Add more potting mix, firm, then water carefully. Tie natural twine with a label around the neck of each jar with the name of the herb. Suitable herbs include chives, parsley, basil, cilantro, lavender, thyme, sage and rosemary. Jungle in a jar These can be fun to do, especially for the younger ones interested in the natural world. Choose small baby house plants from your local nursery, such as ferns, to provide the ‘jungle’ setting. A wide-bodied clear jar with a sealing lid
is an ideal container. Fill the container with a suitable drainage medium such as gravel or fine decorative stones. Top up with potting mix, then place the plants according to how you’d like them to appear. Place in stones, pieces of bark and even the odd jungle animal or two if children are involved. Ensure the soil is moist but not soaking wet, or the plants will rot. Seal on the lid, and you will have a self-supporting ecosystem in miniature. Avoid placing your creation in full sun. Choose low-light plants where possible. Other items in the house Another option other than jars are random household items such as old kettles and pots. Even an old high-heel shoe or birdcage destined for the landfill can be turned into a botanical work of art. Succulents are ideal for these. Have fun and get creative.

The ‘grandfather’ of Kiwi tractors
May 2022

by Andy Bryenton
Politician, historian, author and farmer Robert McNab has many claims to fame; however, his purchase of New Zealand’s first tractor is a milestone in rural life.
Daniel Albone invented the first internal combustion tractor in 1902, and just two years later one of his three-wheelers became the first in New Zealand
a new kind of tractor if you lived near to the works in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, but what if it broke down in Gore or Gisborne? The commissioning of an Ivel as an armoured ambulance in 1904, and its successful testing in Canada, convinced McNab of its toughness. He purchased an Ivel in 1904, and soon he was the owner of the first internal combustion tractor in New Zealand.
The Ivel was a world first in other ways. One of the first boxer-style horizontallyopposed engines with two spark plugs and the first tractor with inflatable tyres. In fact, a single tyre, the front steering wheel boasted a thin, motorcycle-sized tube to help keep it rolling straight when
the two steel, cleated rear wheels deployed their eight horsepower. Robert McNab’s Ivel weighed just under one and a half tonnes, making it much lighter than the monster traction engines of the day and more fit to work on small farms.

Robert McNab was an extraordinary figure in early New Zealand. Born near Knapdale, close to modern-day Invercargill, he was the only surviving child of a large family. He confirmed his powerful intellect when he became Dux of Invercargill District High School in 1879. Robert trained in the law but remained interested in farming, and his progressive outlook and insight into history gave him a desire for modernisation. Fast forward to 1902, 120 years ago, when news of a novel new device caught Mr McNab’s attention. He had previously looked at traction engines and steam tractors as a way to improve farming efficiency. During the Boer War in South Africa, the British Army had experimented for the first time with internal combustion. Now that technology had come through into farming, with the invention of the Ivel three-wheeler, a kerosene-powered tractor that promised to revolutionise farm work in the United Kingdom. It wasn’t just the farming power of the Ivel or its use of a side-mounted PTO wheel for running threshers, stationary mills and crushers. It was its durability, which Robert McNab knew any machine tackling the New Zealand pastureland would require. It was all fine and good, he reasoned, to buy

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: May
WHY THE DISLIKE OF PINE? There has been a growing sentiment in some parts of New Zealand’s culture that is making many forest growers and foresters in our country confused. The ‘I REALLY DON’T LIKE PINE’ club seems to be mounting in numbers, it has suddenly become very trendy to state various opinions on this topic with very little understanding of how the forestry sector works alongside our national natural reserves of forests that are not harvested. The plantation forest sector in New Zealand was developed as a result of our declining natural forests, and to be used for a renewable and sustainable resource that would not impact our indigenous forests. Sentiments, stated as “facts” about pine trees, are not reality based and many articles or social media posts with misleading statements only have confused people even more. The bias that is emphasized in many attitudes imply somehow that “indigenous trees are good” and “pine trees are bad”. When in fact, they are used for completely different outcomes. There is no bad tree. All trees, whether they have originated thousands of years ago, or came here 100’s

From July 1 2021, new regulations were introduced, placing strict limits on the application of synthetic nitrogen on grazed pastures. It has placed additional pressure on farmers to ensure that their fertiliser applications are accurately tracked and recorded so they can maximise pasture growth throughout the season without breaching the 190kg/Ha limit. This can be a delicate balancing act — budgeting nutrient applications across the farm. As a farmer, you need to ask yourself, how can you grow productivity and manage increasing fertiliser costs, all while remaining compliant with the new, stricter environmental regulations? The answer is New Zealand’s leading provider of GPSbased job management systems: TracMap. At TracMap, our systems guide farmers to take more corrective actions for the better utilisation of fertilisers, increased production and reduced costs by enabling better management resources and efficient processes, all while being compliant with regulations. TracMap systems fully integrate with most ‘industry standard’ spread and spray controllers and support sharing of data with third party applications such as FarmIQ, Hawkeye, MyBallance and Precision Farming giving your customers greater flexibility when booking fertiliser applications and collating seasonal reporting.

Building tips for rural land The Constant Angle Knife Sharpening System

76% of New Zealanders are concerned about “fake news” and its implications
Finding professional help before building can avoid hidden traps and unwanted extra costs
Below are four important factors to understand before your build and ideally before you buy your land. • Tip One: Identify the best build platform — ideally as flat as possible and not too far from the road unless you are prepared to pay for a long drive • Tip Two: Is your land affected by flooding? Building outside of a flood plain is not only sensible — it saves thousands of dollars • Tip Three: Is your land on a faultline or affected by liquefaction? You may wonder how you can
NEW HOMES FROM $2,300/M2 RURAL & LIFESTYLE BUILD SPECIALISTS
find out, but there are reasonably good online tools to help. A quick indicator of liquefaction risk is any coastal land or on old river beds • Tip Four: Get professional help to determine the price of getting power to the build platform. Many rural builds are a long way from the nearest power lines, which adds to the cost. You have a pod at the gate, or a transformer may need upgrading; the cost difference is in the thousands Your building contractor should investigate all of these things on your
behalf and include provision for any work that arises in your build contract. If not, you may be in the position of having to find (tens of) thousands of dollars more. Doing your homework upfront, and understanding that every piece of land is unique and has unique hidden costs will reduce financial stress during your build. The immune system by John Arts
Let’s say a virus has penetrated your Non-Specific immune defences, see the last edition, and starts to infect cells. Sitting, waiting for such an attack is your specific immune system that can create a devastating attack against the virus. However, this part of your immune system has a significant shortcoming. Initially, it does not recognise the attacker and needs to be ‘trained’ to identify and attack the virus. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune B cells that bind to an invader marking it for destruction by T cells. Natural immunity is based on the immune system’s ability (activated B cells) to produce antibodies that will both fight a current infection and a return of the same pathogen. Artificial immunity is from vaccines that trigger B cells to make antibodies to provoke a rapid T cell response against a first infection against a virus. It means your immune system is already primed, waiting for exposure and can launch a much faster, more aggressive response against the virus. In the last edition, we saw that our Non-Specific immunity is greatly

What a mild autumn we are having, and up until now, the grass has kept growing, but that should start to slow down as soil temperatures drop. Megan first talked about the issue of sourcing stock more than two years ago. Suppliers have regular shipments coming in, but they are still struggling to meet backorders, and many ride-on deliveries are already pre-sold. Prices have increased a lot during the past year. However, there are whispers that this will continue to go up to cover the massive jump in freight costs and the cost of the raw materials. Rob and the team have coped well by doubling their normal stock levels. At the time of writing, there were 39 push mowers and 21 ride-on mowers in stock. So if you are in the market for something new, call in for excellent choices and beat the inevitable price rises. From Hustler mowers to Stiga, Victa, Masport, MTD and Cub Cadet — they have a ride-on mower to meet your needs. The MTD Mini-rider is priced at just $2,699

All that jazz
by Andy Bryenton
Honda’s latest electric hybrid vehicle comes with some new energy-saving tricks up its sleeve and a new tongue-twisting acronym to remember; e:HEV.
Honda’s latest Jazz combines hybrid efficiency with a new way of handling electrical power and petrol economy

It might just be worth remembering this collection of letters, as the designation stands for a fresh look at the hybrid concept, as tried, tested and proven by Hondas that have gone before and as the ubiquitous Toyota Prius. Honda’s Jazz e:HEV luxe performs a similar juggling act to their CR-Z, perhaps the most fun to drive hybrid of the first generation. With a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a brace of electric motors; it can deliver a massive range without fear of battery drain, and the kick of instant torque. However, it goes about making that power and laying it down in a very different fashion to the CR-Z or the Insight, Honda’s other early hybrid effort. In the new Jazz, the petrol engine
is most often employed to charge the batteries, with smooth electric power delivery predominating. It extends the range vastly over battery-only machines. Moreover, because the petrol motor is only driving a generator and not trying to accelerate an entire car along the tarmac — it’s superbly efficient. The upshot is that the Jazz e:HEV uses petrol, but only in the same way as a hummingbird sips nectar. Figures of 2.4 litres for every 100 kilometres are talked about in the promotional materials, as the little Jazz also applies everything Honda has learned about regenerative braking and kinetic energy recovery. At current prices, this could take you from Northland to Auckland for approximately $8, and that’s a bargain worth considering. Another bargain is the price in comparison to battery-only vehicles. The government will pay you just over $4,000 for choosing the Jazz e:HEV, and it’s only $35,000 brand new to begin with. That puts it on the radar of real Kiwis, who don’t have the budget of a Formula One team or a portfolio of mansions. Everything else Honda could think of is included, and that, from a firm that makes jet planes and robots, is a lot of safety features, connectivity and toys. It even looks quite endearing, with an interesting two-tone interior. Although it’s a city hatchback and not a slick coupe, you can at least say it’s a hybrid from the stable of the NSX. If you’re in the market for a family car and really, honestly don’t need an SUV, then this could be the new front runner.

Knife making is more than a business to us. It’s a passion. Taking the skills that we have honed over the past three decades out to the New Zealand public has been one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. We are not a top-down kind of team. The only way to achieve good results is to listen and that is the key element in our design philosophy when it comes to customising knives. Everyone is different. We can guide from experience but at the end of the day, the knife that we make needs to reflect the personality and needs of its owner. Contact us to design yours. 022 464 7499 | www.kiwiblade.co.nz

The wartime tractor ‘invasion’
May 2022
23
by Andy Bryenton
When wartime machinery shortages struck and foreign trade was cut by the war at sea, a lend-lease deal with the United States delivered fresh ideas and equipment to New Zealand farms. One important change made by the lend-lease programme was the supply of considerable quantities of mechanical equipment for farms. For example, more than 7,000 farm tractors were supplied in the years 1943 to 1945 by US factories. Some idea of the significance of the lendlease deal can be gathered from the fact that, in 1940, there were only about 11,000 tractors on New Zealand farms. By the second world war’s end, there were close to double that number, with US models predominating. Tractors proliferated so quickly that the Transport (Farmer’s Tractor) Emergency Order of 1942 had to be rushed through parliament, making it unnecessary to pay registration for driving a tractor on the road. In fuel-rationed times, farmers often used their new tractors for everything from ploughing fields to mowing hay to driving goods to market. Some children of that era remember the tractor replacing the family car altogether. A classic tractor from the lend-lease era was the John Deere model A, which debuted in the US as a row crop tractor, but was also available in orchard and fixed-tread forms. Farmers in New Zealand were keen that this was the first Deere with rubber tyres as standard, perfect for taking advantage of that emergency order. Typical of its type, it ran a five-litre all-fuel engine developing a maximum of 24-horsepower at the PTO. Its relatively light weight of 1,720kg made it excellent for traversing muddy fields.
“Tractors proliferated so quickly that the Transport (Farmer’s Tractor) Emergency Order of 1942 had to be rushed through parliament.” Its opposite number was the Farmall model A, another small, by modern standards, tractor from Louisville, Kentucky, that punched above its weight on Kiwi farms. The Farmall is still the classic tractor shape drawn by small children in primary school. Its 1.9-litre engine delivered more torque than people thought possible at the time from such a compact unit. Machines like these finally ushered out the steam and horse-drawn machinery era on New Zealand farms. It was an age that had lingered longer here than in the more industrialised northern hemisphere due to our relative isolation. The trade-off for our allies in wartime was increased food production, which went to feed the sailors, marines, soldiers and pilots of the Pacific theatre. After the end of hostilities, the extra efficiency tractors delivered was part of the farming boom that enriched rural New Zealand.
Tough and simple to maintain, many of the classic tractors sent during the second world war are still functional around New Zealand

When steam replaced muscle power
MANAWATU FaRMING LIFESTyLES
In modern times, we can call on excavators, cranes and heavy machinery to tackle those jobs too hefty for human muscle alone, but in the early history of New Zealand, the advent of the steam shovel was a game-changer. As a nation built on natural resource management, Shire horses and bullocks provided the bulk of heavy power in those early times. That changed when two very different companies developed steampowered diggers and draglines in the late 1800s. Joseph Ruston was a young, ambitious steam engineer in Lincolnshire, England, back in 1857. Inspired by the Victorianera steam revolution, he had big ideas to match those of engineering titans of the time. The niche he wanted to explore was digging and mining. Ruston knew that Isambard Brunel, a famous railway builder, needed a better way to dig cuttings through which to run rails. Joining an existing firm, Ruston tried to perfect his idea, but the breakthrough came with a design by inventor James Dumbar. In 1874 the Dunbar-Ruston steam navvy was unveiled, taking its name from the navvies or inland navigators, the workmen who dug massive railway earthworks by hand. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Bucyrus steam engine company had the opposite problem. Their one and a half acre factory site in Ohio was too small, but there was no way to build out. They

the popular Ruston number 20, of which 200 were built. Supplied ‘naked’, these machines were an arm, a boiler, winch gear and a base that was sometimes fitted to railway wheels. Operators built corrugated iron and wooden structures to protect the steam plant from the elements, and photos from the turn of last the century show sooty but warm workers keeping out of the weather near the hot boiler. A pot of tea was never far from the firebox. Now a historical curiosity, these two brands set the stage for the excavators and heavy equipment we can call on today — many survive in museums and collections.

decided to make a move to the largely undeveloped outskirts of Milwaulkee, where they could set up shop making bigger, more powerful steam shovels and draglines. New Zealand mines, earthworks and railways snapped up the produce of both

companies, seeing the benefits of tireless mechanical power. Draglines, those huge, bucket-and-winch dredges with booms exceeding 20 metres, were used to tame swampland and make it ready for farming. Coal mines and quarries employed Bucyrus and Ruston steam shovels, like
