High beef prices good for kiwi farmers by Colin Patterson
High international beef prices are an almost perfect storm for kiwi producers, according to Federated Farmers. The organisation’s Beef and Fibre chairman Rick Powdrell says droughts in United States and Australia have decimated herd numbers and it may take years for stock levels to recover. The shortage of available stock is expected to take years to fix, meaning the current high prices are likely to be around for a significant period. “You can almost call it a perfect storm,” says Mr Powdrell. “Our members are pretty buoyant about it.” The American droughts from 2010 to 2012 forced producers to cut stock numbers to cope with a reduced amount of feed. But consumer demand for the product remained high, meaning prices rose in the world’s largest beef market when production was low.

That opened up opportunities for New Zealand exporters. It also means less competition for Kiwi producers in lucrative Asian markets, such as China. That all happened when conditions in New Zealand — in most areas at least — remained reasonably good. Mr Powdrell says current prices are unlikely to be a flash in the pan. “The long-term outlook is that it will take time for cattle numbers to rebuild. That would be the hope. All the indicators are that prices should remain high for the foreseeable future.” Despite the public perception, Mr Powdrell says beef farmers are not rolling in money. “A lot of them are repaying debt. They’ve been through some pretty tough times. They’re also doing some repairs, maintenance and plant upgrades. They’re all things they can’t do when prices are low.”

Amongst the group of five Nuffield Farming Scholars announced for 2014 is farmer and conservationist, Dan Steele of Whanganui. “It was 100 per cent nuts and bolts business information you wouldn’t get any other way.” He said the contacts made and networks formed will last a lifetime. “I made some very strong contacts and friendships, especially through the United Kingdom, Ireland and Scotland. “Many of them are coming to stay here in the next 18 months or so as well, either travelling individually or finishing their own Nuffield Scholarship travels.” The 2014 Nuffield scholars’ research topics will cover a broad range of issues.

Mr Steele lives and works on Blue Duck Station, farming sheep and beef, and running a conservation project at Whakahoro. The scholarships were announced by Nuffield New Zealand and Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy at a recent function in Wellington. Other successful Nuffield Scholars include: West Coast dairy farmer Bede O’Connor; Woodville dairy farmer Ben Allomes; Rotorua-based DairyNZ regional leader Sharon Morrell, and Fonterra employee Satwant Singh from Morrinsville. The five new scholars join more than 145 others who have been awarded Nuffield Scholarships in the past 60 years. Nuffield NZ chairman Julian Raine said this has been a substantial investment in New Zealand agriculture’s past, current and future leaders. “Only a handful are awarded each year so a Nuffield Scholarship is one of rural New Zealand’s most valuable and prestigious awards. “To be a scholar is a lifechanging experience.”

Nuffield Scholars travel internationally for at least four months in their scholarship year, participate in a Contemporary Scholars’ conference with 60 Nuffield Scholars from around the world, and attend a six-week Global Focus Programme with an organised itinerary through several countries with other scholars. They also have their own individual study programme with a research report due at the end of their travels. One of the current 2014 scholars is Palmerston North potato grower, agricultural contractor and equity dairy farmer Paul Olsen. Mr Olsen said it has been a brilliant experience for him, seeing other countries and a variety of cultures. “New Zealand has a huge opening for the future, in terms of things like food proteins and niche products — it’s there for the taking. “It’s a massive opportunity for us to take on the challenge.” Mr Olsen says the Nuffield name opened many doors. “I visited some massive operations — people wouldn’t hold back.

Creating a LIFESTYLE ENTERPRISE BY DENISE GUNN
In just three years since buying a lifestyle property, Tina Wilks has developed a milking sheep flock, and applied interlinking sustainable principles.
T
ina spent two and a half years looking for a suitable property before she settled on just over 12 acres north of Levin. The property was originally part of a dairy farm, and Tina is the third owner. “My overall goal is to run this block on organic, polyfarming and permaculture principles,” said Tina. “All activities link and are sustainable, however as this is such a small block, I also have to target niche products.” Tina has spent the past two years building up a flock of East Friesian sheep for milking. This year will be the first milking season and she already has people lined up to buy the milk. Ten East Friesian ewes make up the current milking flock, and six hoggets

will join it next year. Tina prefers to hold off their first pregnancy until the second year when they are well-grown. “East Friesian ewes can breed for a long time so long as you look after them when they are young.” Four cross-breed coloured ewes bred by Tina will be used to produce both milk and fine wool. “The ram that I used this year is a New Zealand Marsh sheep, Biogrow certified, raised on Tim Gow’s organic farm Mangapiri Downs. “The New Zealand Marsh sheep has high fertility, good milk production, fine wool and vigorous lambs, so I am hoping that the cross with the East Friesian will produce an even better milking sheep.”
Tina originally worked in the animal health division for The Boots Company in the United Kingdom. Her work covered everything from the development of new insecticides for animal and plant treatment, to farm and companion animal nutrition, and dairy hygiene products. “Knowing how toxic all this stuff is, I was sure there must be a better way,” said Tina. “And when you are in a position, like most lifestylers, of not having to be totally an economic success from day one, it is an ideal opportunity to learn and apply these principles.” Tina explained that the introduction of permaculture as a design element to her property means activities done more
often are placed closer to the house. Waste area from one area is the natural fuel for another. “For example the whey that is a waste product from the cheese-making is really good for growing healthy pigs. “The pigs in turn are also good at cleaning up orchard waste.” The property’s original owners planted more than two acres in daffodils which provide a seasonal income. Tina sells

Providing there are still flowers available, Tina contacts the Cancer Society in the lead-up to Daffodil Day to come in and pick daffodils to help with local fundraising. The farm’s pastures are currently being renewed, one paddock at a time. Instead of re-sowing with ryegrasses, Tina is planting herbal leys — a mixture of grasses, clovers, and other plants. “These leys also have deep-rooting plants that not only improve soil structure but also draw up essential vitamins and minerals for the ruminant animal. “In addition they promote biodiversity, create habitats for beneficial insects,

and produce pollen and nectar which helps our bees.” Tina has been learning how to use seaweed and aerated compost teas to feed the soil biology. She is now in discussions with OrganicFarm New Zealand on starting the road to organics. Tina also has plans to create felted wool and fibre material through combining the fleece from several alpacas she owns, together with lamb’s wool. “The thickness can be easily varied so you can go from blankets to thinner material that can be made into garments. “You can also felt in silk so designs/ patterns are also possible.”

As the chief executive of training and education resources company Symbiont Limited, Tina intends to combine her passion for sustainable and biological farming with the skills and expertise in training development. She aims to provide learning resources for farmers and growers that can be accessed online. “Also start to develop some sort of online ‘community of practice’ where farmers and growers not only help each other out, but encourage each other to move to a much more sustainable future,” she said. Ultimately Tina would like to bring together the right combination of products to make her lifestyle property venture successful.

CHAROLAIS SET COURSE
FOR NEW DIRECTION BY DENISE GUNN
After dairy farming for 30 years, Jimmy Vallender was looking for a change of direction on the Manawatu farm that he and his wife Julie own. The viewing, subsequent purchase and arrival of 140 unregistered Charolais cows set that new course.
S
tud numbers continued to build up when Jimmy bought several registered cows from Kaitoke Stud near Feilding. Two registered Charolais bulls on long-term lease — Kaitoke Commodore from Kaitoke Stud, and Forest View Ancestor from Whananaki Coastal Charolais Ltd in Northland, are recent arrivals complementing the herd. The Vallender’s breed Charolais cattle under the prefix Taikorea. “It’s more a finishing farm here than a breeding

farm, but I do like the breeding side of it,” said Jimmy. “I like to see an animal grow to its full potential.” Jimmy said the Charolais’ build and conformation allows for easy calving. “Even though they are a big animal, there is no difficulty calving,” he said. “They calve their own breed easily.” The breed’s size, high growth rates, quiet temperaments and quality conformation have also impressed. A mixture of sand and peat soil covers the flat land and small rolling hills on the Vallender’s 109ha Taikorea farm. The couple also lease several blocks in the Manawatu running sheep, cattle, and growing crops. The majority of the Vallender’s cows calve in spring with the remainder calving in autumn. Around ten per cent of their cows produce twins.
“Charolais cows have strong motherly instincts,” said Jimmy. “Their maternal traits are very strong. The calves all get a good start in life.” With the weight range of the Vallender’s Charolais cows averaging in the upper bracket of 1,000kg, Jimmy places immense importance on the cow’s feet. “They are culled heavily for foot and leg problems as they carry tremendous weight,” he said. Originating from France, the Charolais were initially used for draught, milk and meat. Selective breeding throughout the 19th century further developed and improved the breed. The first French Charolais herd book was documented by Count Charles de Bouille in 1864. Charolais semen, used for trials at Lincoln and Ruakura, was first imported
to New Zealand from Great Britain in 1965. Further semen was imported for commercial use the following year. The importations of bulls and female

Jimmy demonstrates Kaitoke Commodore’s quiet nature
Charolais into New Zealand from Great Britain began in the late 1960s. A ‘New Zealand’ Charolais has evolved over many years through using a French Charolais sire over other cattle breeds to eventually achieve purebred status. Genetic selection has also developed the breed to suit New Zealand farming systems. The late Rusty McIntyre imported some of New Zealand’s first Charolais embryos from Australia to his Waimoe Stud in Apiti. Several of Kaitoke Stud’s Charolais bloodlines trace back to these early imports. Kaitoke Commodore sired the Champion of Champions bull, Kaitoke Extreme, at the 2011 Beef Expo. Jimmy said the Charolais is a very sought after breed in New Zealand. “They build good condition through spring and can maintain that condition through droughts and

winter. “Charolais also do well on rough tucker.” During summer, Jimmy provides his herd with green feed maize which is chopped and fed out straight away. The Vallender’s take their heifers through for local trade. Bulls are fattened and killed before their second winter. “It is very satisfying to see the bulls grow,” said Jimmy. “The bulls yield between 58-60 per cent live to deadweight. They average 380kg at 18 months on the hook.” Charolais crossed with other cattle breeds have also proven to be profitable at all stages. Some of the Vallender’s bulls are sold to both dairy and beef farmers. “Charolais bulls are very good terminal sires,” said Jimmy. “The breed has a huge potential out there in the beef scene.”

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES
ADVERTORIAL
Health for All Life
by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials
Protoplasm is a living substance that fills the cells of microbes, plants, animals and humans containing all the compounds of life in a mixture of such minute components that it has defied analysis. The cycle of life is really the story of protoplasm as it goes from microbes to all life above the soil, then back into the soil. What matters is that the food eaten carries the protoplasm of the microbes grown with a natural balance of minerals. The purpose of eating food is to recreate a population of soil micro-organisms in the intestines. Protoplasm from the microbes can then be absorbed into the blood. All plants, animals and humans live on protoplasm and microbes are the only living thing that can make protoplasm, so to operate at the top level you need micro-organisms in your soil. One of the most beneficial fertilisers for the soil and for the microbes is rock-dust. Agrissentials are the pioneers of New Zealand volcanic rock dust which is ground down to flour and blended with our
live living liquid fertiliser Oceans 100, together with other BioGro certified ingredients culminating in our Rok Solid full spectrum multi-mineral, microbial rich fertiliser. Within 48 hours this beautiful brew heats up to 60 degrees centigrade, composting all ingredients into one magical mix, ready to bring life, minerals and microbes to the soil. Now, if you want to see and experience the heat, the wonderful aroma and the live nature of our Rok Solid environmentally friendly fertilisers you are more than welcome to witness this at our South Island plant (Mosgiel) contact Darryn Graves on 027 288 0140 or our North Island plant (Te Kauwhata) contact Peter Baldero on 021 738 602. Agrissentials fertilisers are designed to re-mineralise the soil and pack the soil with micro-organisms and worms, satisfying two parts of the equation
to grow plants and pasture (the other two parts being water and sunlight). Get these four essentials — minerals, microbes, moisture and sunlight, in the right amounts and growth will flourish. The up and coming new technology is mans co-operative progression with nature. Nature has the capacity to yield all manner of farm produce far beyond our present expectations, disease and pest free and perfectly mineralised. Everything emits energy, whether it is soil, water, air, chemicals or minerals. What makes each element different is the pattern of frequency at which it resonates. Some patterns and frequencies are detrimental to biological life and some are beneficial. The new technology is about these energies and how we can best benefit from them. With the help of science we will eventually be able to tune into these energies which will benefit both quality and increased production, that’s what farming is all about. It’s time to leave the chemical age and begin working with nature and the natural capital that she provides for all life. The change to Agrissentials system of working with nature is very minimal, but hugely beneficial for you, your family, your farm and your environment. Agrissentials are committed to healthy communities: so much so that in November for every tonne of Rok Solid or 200L of Oceans 100 you buy, not only will you will be making your soil healthy but Agrissentials will donate a further $3 to Movember, supporting men’s health. RURAL WOMEN
DWN farewells longtime board members Michelle Wilson and Angela Fullerton have stepped aside, but not out.
Angela Fullerton and Michelle Wilson at the Dairy Women’s Network AGM in October
As long-serving members of the Dairy Women’s Network board, they plan to retain a keen interest in the organisation. At the AGM last month, Michelle Wilson officially handed over the reins as chair to Justine Kidd, and board member Angela Fullerton also officially stepped down after 12 years. They cite giving other women opportunities in the Network’s governance roles as one of the main reasons for taking a step back. “The network has evolved over the last couple of years and it’s time for someone else to step up,” says Michelle. Having just completed stage one of the Fonterra Governance Programme, she says her new focus will be on increasing her governance knowledge so she can give back to the rural sector. She hopes to be selected for stage two of the programme. Michelle became a member of the Dairy Women’s Network in 2003 and took on the regional convenor coordinator role in 2004. She first appeared on the board in 2006 and was appointed chair in 2010.
Since 2006, membership has almost tripled and the Network’s regional groups have grown from 12 to 30. “The membership growth has been an absolute highlight, as was being invited to represent Dairy Women’s Network and the New Zealand dairy industry at the APEC Women in Leadership Forum in Beijing, and managing to continue Dairy Women’s Network business as usual whilst in the executive chair role.” Angela said in her address at the AGM that it was after attending her first DWN conference in 1998 that she gave herself permission to get involved in the dairy farming business. “I want to thank the Network and its members for recognising my strengths and abilities and allowing me to grow. You are women I treasure.”

RURAL WHEELS
Mowing in greener pastures by Andy Bryenton
The days of pushing a mechanical rotary mower across acres of verdant lawn are far behind us — replacing the clack and clatter of blades with the purr of horsepower on any given Sunday. And it’s quite an arms race out there, with lawn-care engineers vying to create the perfect machine to tackle the maintenance of even the wildest back yard. In rural New Zealand, larger lawns (which quite often blend seamlessly into the acreage reserved for livestock) have often meant that a push mower was
never enough — like TV’s Hank Hill, men of the land have developed an abiding respect for the convenience of the rideon mower. Technology in this field has proceeded apace with developments in quad bikes, utes, tractors and other vital tools often lumped together under the unfair classification of ‘big boy’s toys’ — we know for certain that

machines like the new Victa NXT lawn tractor are vital time saving, back-achereducing godsends. Victa have been crafting mowers for Kiwi lawns for over five decades, and though they began in New South Wales, they have been embraced on this side of the Tasman for their powerful, nononsense approach to mower design. The NXT series is no exception, drawing on Victa’s alliance with parent company Briggs and Stratton to put more power at the driver’s command. That power comes from a Briggs and Stratton professional series flat v-twin — an engine with a similar layout to that found in a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Here, the two cylinders are laid out horizontally, and produce an ample 23 horsepower, driving a wide, 1.17 metre triple bladed cutting deck. This means less passes to cut the average lawn down to size, but Victa’s engineers haven’t stopped with simply beefing up the NXT’s grunt. As very few lawns are flat, cricket-pitch expanses of easily tamed ryegrass, the NXT has
been designed with stability and nimble turning in mind, enabling whoever is in command to handle this 263 kilogram lawn tractor as deftly as a safety razor for edging and nipping around trees. To enable this, the NXT has a tiny 35cm turning radius, and comes equipped with cruise control for those back-and-forth switchbacks. For that professional looking finish, it will cut down to a militarily precise 3.8cm, evenly across the yard. With spring well and truly here, many folks are looking at the riot of verdancy out the window with growing trepidation. The good news is, like modern utes, ATVs and other serious farming equipment, the ride-on mower is keeping pace with technology, offering better ride comfort and ergonomics to match a boost in power and reliability.

Prepared to weather the hard knocks by Andy Bryenton
The Polaris Ranger has proven a hit on Kiwi farms, with its combination of utility, safety and economical power.
And, although it will soon be covered in proper Kiwi mud, it’s not a bad looking beast either, in fire-engine red trim. Polaris burst onto the scene with their original Ranger, carving out a niche as a versatile working man’s UTV and winning fans with no-nonsense performance on the farm.

3 SEATER OR 6 SEATER AVAILABLE
This new iteration of the Ranger stays true to the old rule, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any indications. But it does improve on what is already a popular package, and its ‘heavy duty’ rural focus is sure to be welcomed by those who now see the UTV as a farming necessity.

In both petrol and diesel powered forms, the tough side-by-side UTVs have become a fixture of the rural landscape, spawning many imitators and contenders for the crown. That’s why Polaris have engaged in some serious research before unveiling their new Ranger 570 — a machine which they say sets a new benchmark. To do this, they haven’t turned to the lab or to a specially designed wind tunnel — not even a closed racetrack. They’ve instead taken in feedback from actual working farmers, listening to the demands of our terrain and our hard-asnails rural conditions. They’ve been told — loudly — that a machine fit for parks maintenance or a hunting jaunt along a tidy trail is likely to take a hammering when subjected to the knocks, bumps, hard labour and muddy winters which are sure to be
thrown at any serious farming tool. What has come out of this process is new from the ground up. Polaris begin by strengthening the chassis and suspension components with thick, heavy duty steel for endurance, and easy-access grease fittings for quick maintenance. From the winning formula of the Polaris Ute super-ATV they have brought in four-wheel descent control, a safe and sure-footed way to tackle steep and slippery terrain. Ground clearance is higher, suspension travel longer, engine power up by 10 per cent, and power steering is now standard. The core of the Ranger’s new incarnation is a powerful 567cc engine producing 44 horsepower, all fed to the ground through a clever four-wheel drive system and those grippy, knobbly tyres.

Amendments aim to tidy up building act by Andy Bryenton
The rollout of changes to New Zealand’s building act — the document which governs the standards and practices of the building industry — has changed the landscape within the industry in recent years. The emphasis on responsibility has been passed on to project managers, builders and subcontractors in allied trades in a big way, making it more important than ever to engage only trusted, qualified tradespeople to work on your home or business build. Now another round of amendment changes is set to become law, rolling out in two stages. The first has already been implemented as of October, while the rest come into effect on January 1, 2015. The aim of these amendments, according to the Government’s body responsible for building standards and quality, is to provide peace of mind to customers, and to remove so-called ‘cowboys’ from the construction related trades altogether, through the provision of hefty fines for working without the right accreditation. Right now, it is illegal for unauthorised people to work
on a build — plumbing must be done by qualified plumbers, gas installed by qualified gasfitters, wiring by qualified electricians. If a builder is in charge of the entire project, he must have the right credentials too, and assure the provenance of his subcontractors. As of January 1, all building work over $30,000 in value must have a written contract. Tradespeople will be required by law to disclose their credentials and current licensing status, or face heavy penalties. There will also be an enforced one year ‘defect repair period’, during which a builder must repair any defects the customer informs them about — ‘no questions asked’. Rules like these place a great responsibility on individual builders, and are rumoured by some to be a precursor to changes to the Resource Management Act enabling the fast-

tracking of local authorities’ role in the pre-build process — a ‘red tape cutting’ move which was a key election issue. Large, organised builders’ associations such as the Certified Builders already adhere to the codes of best practice and strict qualifications monitoring demanded by the amendment.
As the onus goes on builders and project managers to provide longer guarantees and more binding contracts, groups such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders have already rolled out considerable initiatives putting them ahead of the curve of what the modern trade and its regulations demand.

New life for old buildings
ALL OVER SPOUTINGLtd
Travel around rural New Zealand and you will soon pass by structures built originally for one specific purpose, only to be transformed into something completely different. It may be a barn, a church, or even a humble shearing shed, but imagination, innovation, and a little hard work will have radically altered the intent of the original structure. Creating a new home from a dilapidated old building intended for a purpose entirely different takes imagination, time, perseverance and foresight as well as a highly flexible approach to budgeting but if you are creative and resourceful, the end result can be great. For the most part a rural building, be it on old church for a community long since absorbed into populations elsewhere — usually into an urban area, or a barn, or shearers’ quarters, will be found in nice rural settings, perhaps with old established trees or shelter belts, and often water nearby. When embarking on a renovation project you need to note that the grand purpose is to retain the unique character of such buildings while coping with structural and design problems as you uncover them. Old structures are a lot more work than building from the ground up.

Check first with the local council authority, to make sure you can begin conversion work. Just because you may have acquired an empty barn does not mean you will automatically be able to convert it. Another prerequisite will be to have any building properly surveyed before Ever had mess left behind?

Soil Matters with Peter Burton Enjoying family gatherings
A report of Dairy NZ’s recent annual meeting quoted Dairy NZ director Alister Body as saying that he was apprehensive about going to social gatherings knowing someone might ‘have a go’ about dairy farming. Chief executive Tim Mackle was also quoted as saying that the industry acknowledged it used to be naive but that was years ago. ‘We have moved on from the time when we were damaging the environment unashamedly. We know what we are doing now and are continually trying to improve how we conduct our business’. There are two issues in those statements worth exploring. Firstly having been part of the dairy industry since 1979 our own practices and attitudes and those of farmers we’ve worked with never involved activities that unashamedly damaged the environment. We have always been mindful of any potential long-term harm and with the knowledge and resources available at the time damage has always been minimised. Secondly the issue urban New Zealanders are becoming increasingly troubled about is Nitrate-N levels in

Debating a beef cooperative After some lean years that produced a fair bit of hardship for beef farmers, their prospects are looking up as they enjoy high prices of up to $5.90 per kilogram for prime steers and with bulls fetching $6.00 a kilo. of dollars in extra revenue to New Zealand’s agricultural export industry. Depending on weight bobby calves can realise $2.10 per kilogram or $37.38 per head. If they were reared to 220kg–320kg weight range, at today’s prices they could realise from $1,200 to $1,800. With regard to loyalty and what is good for farmers, I believe that today’s farmer should remember that history has shown that in the early years due to a lack of organised cooperative marketing, many farmers felt they were at the mercy of the skilled negotiators of individual companies whose offices and cool store facilities were located in Tooley Street, London. Dairy produce was all sold on the free market system with the directorates or proprietors of individual Tooley Street companies accepting full responsibility for sales and trading. They decided upon the terms of sale, methods of transport and choice of agents. London Tooley Street traders’ representatives used to deal directly with individual New Zealand dairy companies. It is said that a farmer’s yearly income depended on how much whisky was applied to the local dairy company manager during the negotiations. For many decades 95.6% of New Zealand’s income came from products grown on its pastures. The New Zealand government eventually formed the New
Zealand Dairy and the Meat and Wool Producer Boards in an endeavour to bring organised marketing of New Zealand’s agricultural products, with a guaranteed price system which was the price that the farmer received for his produce. Over the years these structures have changed. It is important that we farmers should never forget the many years of hard work and investment that New Zealand farmers have committed to not
Young deer processed annually
The has been much debate in the media on ‘where to from here’. Some are advocating that the beef industry should form a Fonterra-type cooperative — but on the opposite side of the coin are those who ask that if the Fonterra cooperative model is the way forward for beef farmers, how is it Fonterra can’t halt the fall in milk prices. The suggestion of a lack of modern-day farmer loyalty has also been raised as an argument that forming cooperatives does not guarantee continued farmer loyalty and supply. It’s suggested many modern-day farmers like to enter into their own negotiations with independent processors and it is evident since the formation of Fonterra there has also been the establishment of a substantial number of independent proprietary milk processing companies, some with overseas shareholding and others like Open Country where the main shareholders are the Talley Group in the South Island who have acquired ownership of Affco — the former Auckland Farmers Freezing Company. Fonterra director Ian Farrelly, who rears 10,000 calves, said last week that the beef industry lacks a strategy for adding value to the 1.9 million dairy farmer bobby calves which are processed every winter for veal and by-products. Farrelly claims that if these calves were on-reared they could add billions

only producing our agricultural products on the farm, but also being involved in the marketing and receiving our rightful share of market profits. While there are some farmers who believe that they can better manage the marketing of their own produce, in the long term, I firmly believe that New Zealand’s farming history demonstrates that farmers who take the cooperative approach will win in the end.

“We have also just gone over to the iKeenan PACE Connect System, which has been fantastic. With this, not only can we keep a track on what we are feeding the goats and what quantities but also we are getting some really good data and feed records along with the conversion rate of feed to milk to see how efficiently we are performing. “This partnered up with the Intouch System in Ireland and now our own Kennan Specialist Nutritionist makes the future extremely exciting.. We have used a Nutritionist before and unless the information that you get back from them is regular and up to date it is a waste of time. “With the Intouch System I would give them information that evening and the next morning there would be a new diet sent through to the Keenan Mixer . “We have found Séamus to be extremely motivated, great at

getting back to you and extremely efficient and professional and the 24/7 Keenan Service and Support is excellent. To summarize we have found the whole package, the Keenan mixer wagon, the nutritional advise and monitoring and of course the reliability and the backup servicing, second to none. Its not just the great wagon, it’s the great package!” package! Simon and Melissa Juby , Waikato

Heat-proof cows?! by Joanne Speechly
“When magnesium inputs are required, Golden Bay Dolomite provides the simplest and most effective option.” call 0800 4 Dolomite
A New Zealand-based company has bred a heat tolerant cow, designed to thrive in the tropics. Genetics experts at Dairy Solutionz believe the mutation will allow cows to cope better with heat and achieve high milk production during times of heat stress. CEO Derek Fairweather says a breeding programme was initiated 10 years ago with assistance from the Callaghan Institute and the University of Florida, and they have now produced an animal with a one degree improved heat tolerance. The new composite breed will be used on the large-scale dairy farm systems that Dairy Solutionz is constructing in partnership with governments and landowners in the United States, Colombia and Ecuador, where Mr Fairweather said the potential for dairy growth is immense. “There’s actually a mutation in three breeds, which ultimately had their origin back in Spain, that changes their sweat glands and gives them a slick coat. “Under heat stress, they’re actually a degree better than a conventional Holstein and that results in about two litres of milk a day for a big American Holstein. “It would be less for a Kiwi cow — but it’s still a pretty significant amount of

tolerance, so we’ve been targeting this slick gene and trying to breed it into New Zealand pasture genetics.” The new composite animals will be branded as Kiwipole™ dairy cows and the first Kiwipole™ bulls are now available to order. Since 2007, Dairy Solutionz has worked with its international partners to design and integrate best-of-breed technologies into its large-scale offshore pastoral farms. “Over the
past seven years, dozens of New Zealand agritechnology companies have partnered with us to develop turnkey solutions to create unique, highly productive tropical dairy farms in key locations around the world. “We’re excited about opening our first demonstration farms within the next few months,” said Mr Fairweather. Entries are now being accepted for three categories — New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year, New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year and New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year. The competition attracted 572 entrants in 2014 and national convenor Chris Keeping says organisers are hopeful of similar numbers in next year’s event. “One of our key messages this year will be to encourage people to enter so they are better positioned to capitalise on any opportunities that may arise from a forecast period of lower milk payout. Mrs Keeping says the ‘phenomenal’ response to the dairy trainee competition, with nearly 300 entries received in 2014, has led to some changes — particularly around the timing of entries. “The best way a new entrant in the dairy industry can progress their career is by entering the Dairy Industry Awards. It’s a no-brainer really and the word must be spreading. Entrants first compete in one of 11 regional competitions held around
2014 Manawatu Sharemilker/Equity Farmers of the Year, Duncan and Kim Fraser
the country, with all regional winners progressing to a national final. All entries should be received online at www.dairyindustryawards.co.nz by November 30. Further information on the competitions and entry process is available online.
