Farms close to carbon neutral

Integrity community media

The Manawatu Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by Integrity Community Media, a privately owned NZ company.

Independent research has found New Zealand’s sheep and beef farms are already close to being carbon neutral, strengthening calls for the formal recognition of on-farm sequestration.

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) lecturer in GIS and remote sensing in the applied ecology department, Dr Bradley Case, estimates the woody vegetation on New Zealand sheep and beef farms is offsetting between 63% to 118% of their on-farm agricultural emissions. If the midpoint in the report’s range is used, on average the woody vegetation on sheep and beef farms is absorbing about 90% of these emissions. Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO Sam McIvor said absolute greenhouse gas emissions from New Zealand sheep and beef production have reduced by 30% since 1990. “This research reinforces the importance of farmers getting formal recognition for the sequestration happening on their farms. “Currently, most vegetation on sheep and beef farms does not qualify for inclusion in the ETS because it does not meet the definition of a forest. If farmers are to face a price for agricultural emissions, it’s only fair they get credit for their sequestration.” Mr McIvor said the focus to date on livestock’s climate change contribution has been on emissions, rather than on sequestration. However, with any product, it makes sense to consider the whole business — in this case, taking a whole-offarm approach. “The study should also reassure consumers that New Zealand beef and lamb are among the most sustainable in the world, and our farmers are making a significant contribution to addressing on-farm agricultural emissions. “These findings should be of immense pride for New Zealand’s sheep and beef farmers, the 92,000 people employed in what is New Zealand’s largest manufacturing sector, and all New Zealanders.” Dr Case said there is a strong case for farmers to get credit for the sequestration happening on their farms.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO Sam McIvor said independent research should reassure consumers that New Zealand beef and lamb are among the most sustainable in the world

“This is an integral part of He Waka Eke Noa, the regulatory framework that industry and government are currently developing to manage agricultural emissions and recognise on-farm sequestration. “This research not only builds understanding of the overall greenhouse gas contribution of the sheep and beef sector, but will help inform the development of policy, and further reinforce the outstanding biodiversity on sheep and beef farms.” According to the report, woody vegetation is made up of 1.52 million hectares of native forest and 0.48 million hectares of exotic vegetation. “The report identifies where sheep and beef farmers can focus on to continue to build the native vegetation and biodiversity on their farms,” said Dr Case. The net carbon emissions estimation assumed a net-neutral rate for soil sequestration, so the amount of sequestration happening could be even greater. Data surrounding yearly changes in soil sequestration and the science on this is still in development.

Funds available for Enviroschools With less than two months until applications close for Horizons Regional Council’s Pat Kelly Enviroschools Action Fund, the bulk of requests are expected soon. For mer ly known as the Enviroschools Action Fund, the Pat Kelly Enviroschools Action Fund aims to support sustainability projects from Enviroschools that are not eligible for Horizons’ Community Grants initiative. The fund was renamed at the end of 2019 in memory of former Horizons councillor Pat Kelly. Cr Kelly was a huge advocate for the programme. Horizons environmental educator and Enviroschools’ regional coordinator, Sarah Williams, said this is the second year the council has been able to offer this funding. “Schools and early childhood education centres that are part of the Enviroschools programme commit to undertaking a long-term sustainability journey of learning. They are highly involved in a wide range of environmental and sustainability disciplines such as waste, biodiversity, transport and social justice. “Being an Enviroschool is not just about creating sustainability within the school or centre grounds. It is about building a sustainable community. Being able to support community projects is hugely beneficial to this outcome. “Although many Enviroschools have innovative ways to raise money to

contribute to projects costs, some projects may require a little more input.” Mrs Williams said the fund supported 10 projects last year, which included the purchase of recladding for shade houses, worm farms, and a water tank and irrigation system for tamariki play and gardening. Orautoha School, near Raetihi, received funding to reclad their 18-yearold shade house, which they use for plant propagation. Vegetables are grown for students and their families. “Kimbolton School, a recipient from the 2020 round, had many projects within their school grounds. However, the enviro-group, made up of both staff and students, wanted to branch out and develop a project to benefit not just the school, but the community as a whole.

“That led the school to create a community orchard in the paddock opposite their school as well as receiving funding for 12 fruit trees.” After researching which fruit trees would suit the school environment and community, Monrad Intermediate School pupils used funding to buy a range of varieties. “We can’t wait to see what ideas Enviroschools submit towards this new funding round,” said Mrs Williams. Applications close on Tuesday, December 1 at 5pm; the fund is open to official Enviroschools in the Horizons region only. There are 74 Enviroschools in the region, ranging from early childhood education through to primary and secondary schools.

dominating the New Zealand sire ranks and entering Fairdale Stud into the record books. Arthur and Joan’s grandson, Duncan is the fourth generation of the Fell family to farm the 160ha property, along with his wife, Lucy. Duncan followed his father Gerald and uncle Rex into thoroughbred horse breeding, taking over the reins at Fairdale. Duncan said Pakistan II was an instant success, winning the Champion Sire Australia-New Zealand title three times before his premature death at the age of 13. “He died at a young age, leaving only eight crops.” From the late 1960s and through the 1970s, Pakistan II won a total of

rthur Fell and his wife Joan founded Fairdale Stud in the late 1940s, taking their first yearling to the Trentham yearling sales in 1949. The couple were the second generation to farm on the property, milking pedigree Friesian cows, breeding registered Hereford cattle and Romney sheep, as well as growing potatoes. When Arthur began spelling racehorses on the property for local trainers, he became interested in breeding thoroughbreds. His involvement grew when he was offered champion three-year-old stallion, Touloch, to stand at Fairdale in 1952. Eleven years later, the couple’s imported stallion Pakistan II began stamping his mark on progeny,

six champion stallion titles. He sired a winners-to-runners ratio of 80% and stakes winners-to-runners ratio of 13.2%. “That is comparable to some of the world’s best stallions, such as Northern Dancer and Danzig,” said Duncan. “In total, he sired 43 stakes winners.” Leading racehorse trainer Eric Ropiha trained numerous horses for Fairdale, including some of Pakistan II’s most notable progeny, Ajasco and Raja Sahib. Eric was a master horseman, known for his skills in various equestrian disciplines. He also trained horses for two governors-general, Sir Willoughby Norris and Sir Bernard Fergusson, and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in 1996. Duncan said the aim of any commercial breeder is to sell yearlings and for them to then become successful racehorses and ultimately Group One winners. Most of Fairdale’s horses are sold at the Karaka National Yearling Sales in January. Others, which may not be suitable, are either sold as weanlings or two-year-olds at the Karaka Readyto-Run sale. The Fell family, and other long-time thoroughbred breeders, the Williams family of Little Avondale Stud in the Wairarapa, are the oldest vendors at the national yearling sales. More than 200 stakes winners around the globe have been bred at Fairdale, including winners of the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Doncaster Handicap and more than 30 other Group One races. Other notable horses are Australia Horse of the Year, Hyperno, champion

three-year-old in South Africa, Petrava, New Zealand Champion three-year-old filly, Plume, and three times Group One winner, Tall Poppy. “This year, we have bred the Karaka Million and Group One Sistema Stakes winner, Cool Aza Beel.” In 2008, Gerald’s achievements were recognised with the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to racing and breeding. stallions. All mares are sent to other stud farms to be served, usually by stallions the Fell family own shares in. “As we are no longer standing stallions and have reduced the size of our broodmare band, we no longer employ any full-time staff,” said Duncan. During the summer, university students are employed to help prepare the yearlings for sale.

“Our main goal is to improve the quality of the broodmare band and maintain it at a size that is manageable. However, this is very hard to achieve as there are so many factors which are out of your control.” In addition to breeding top-class thoroughbreds, Fairdale trades between 4,000–6,000 lambs and around 500 cattle.

PRODUCING MILK

and honey BY DENISE GUNN

Since arriving in New Zealand from Switzerland in 2002, Raphael Knopf has successfully built up a thriving honey-producing business.

R

aphael graduated with agricultural farming and carpentry superior degrees in Switzerland. He also completed his military service before heading off on his OE. During his travels through New Zealand, his agricultural skills and knowledge were put to good use as he picked up handson farming jobs. That soon led to a more permanent position on a dairy farm near Hunterville, where he still lives. “I could hardly speak English when I came, but I soon picked it up by getting involved in the rugby club, the Lions Club and many community events. Thanks to the Hunterville community and some good friends,” he said. Raphael climbed the dairy ladder from milker, manager, sharemilker with 250 cows, and dairy farm partnership with 900 cows. “It’s been quite a journey.”

In the early years, while working on a dairy farm, Raphael became intrigued with bees. He approached a local beekeeper for advice and shortly afterwards bought his first two hives. “I never had any beekeeping experience. I asked a lot of questions and learnt as I went on.” By 2009, the number of Raphael’s beehives had grown to 30, all placed on the dairy farm. That same year, he founded Knopf Honey Limited. By the time he left the dairy farm, two years later, Raphael had 120 hives. Raphael’s father, Jean-Baptiste, joined to help him with the business and now manages sales in Europe. The pair employs close to 40 full-time workers, including 30 beekeepers and a few casuals, to manage 13,500 hives. Knopf Honey produces a range of different types of honey; Floral,

Rewarewa, Bush, and varying grades of Manuka, depending on the area of production and month of the year. Each batch of honey can be traced back to the original source hives. This process is audited through Assure Quality to ensure it meets the standard set out in Knopf Honey’s risk management plan. For the past decade, the beehives’ locations have expanded across the North Island. They are placed between Taranaki to Gisborne and Opotiki to Foxton. “We run Italian bees and some Carniolan bees. The Italian bees produce more honey and are softer to work with. Carniolan bees are producing slightly less and are a bit more aggressive, but seem to be a positive to fight the wasps.” Each hive is regularly checked for diseases and parasites and treated twice a year for varroa mite. “The Knopf Honey team build, paint and brand their own bee boxes, pallets and feeder boxes. “Everything that we can do ourselves, we are doing it.” Raphael said the business challenges faced are similar to any other farming operation. “The yearly challenge is to produce quality food, improve production techniques, and develop the business as efficiently as possible.” For the past eight years, finding reliable, willing-to-work, qualified beekeepers and workers, in general,

OctOber 2020

has also been a struggle. That led Raphael to employ qualified beekeepers from overseas. However, he has had to navigate through various immigration changes and inconsistencies to retain his current staff and recruit some more. “The present government is trying to force our hand to employ unqualified Kiwi and enrol them in apprenticeships. Very few will succeed and complete their apprenticeship. What the government forgets is that to form a good apprentice, you need a good teacher. At present New Zealand doesn’t have enough beekeepers with sufficient experience to actually teach an apprentice. The industry needs to be importing experience, knowledge and willing-towork attitudes to be able to create a new generation of good beekeepers.

“One of the highlights has been putting together a performing, dynamic, happy-to-work team, having our own extraction, and opening a spot on the international market.” Six years ago Knopf Honey began exporting, mainly Manuka honey, to Switzerland, France, Germany and Japan. Knopf Honey is also expanding into producing medical-grade honey. More recently, Raphael found beekeeping has helped revitalise rural areas. “It brings back good community, hardworking people and their families. “I think that is crucial as it seems all the younger generation have been misguided and want to be in town,

having big pay and very little work. Beekeeping also gives new incomes to rugged farms.” However, New Zealand’s housing crisis continues to be an issue with a shortage of houses to rent for new workers. “For our business to be able to expand and stay competitive, we have had to buy, build or move houses to Hunterville.” Working smoothly through the forecast recession is Raphael’s current business focus. “I plan to develop long-term sustainability here in New Zealand and also with overseas clients. Getting a strong community will then create a strong pool of good workers.”

Years of fencing came to an end recently with the passing of master fencer, tutor and judge, Athol Cooper, at the age of 90.

orn in Eketahuna, Athol was the first son and second-eldest of 12 children to Hilbert and Irene Cooper. The family milked cows at Hamua, between Eketahuna and Pahiatua, on a property belonging to Hilbert and his three brothers. The Cooper children attended Hamua Primary School and later high school in Eketahuna. At the age of 15, Athol left school to work on the farm and for the Cooper brothers agricultural contracting business. In his spare time, he took up competitive wrestling, becoming a champion in the sport. In 1953, Athol married Lorraine Reid, and the couple moved to a farm near

Dannevirke. For the next two years, Athol worked as a shepherd/general hand on the property and learnt the skills required for fencing. When a shepherding/general hand position became available at Massey Agricultural College in 1955, the couple moved to Manawatu. At Massey, Athol worked alongside world-acclaimed sheep shearer, Godfrey Bowen, picking up extensive shearing knowledge. Athol designed and built the structures required for fruit crop management at Massey too. Athol and Lorraine, with their young family, moved to a Taipo Road farm near Rongotea in 1960, where Athol took up

along with chief consultant Frank Price and fencing guru, the late Bill Schular. That year, NZ Wire won the prestigious best site award.” During the years, Athol also held fencing demonstrations at Flock House as well as judging fencing competitions and tutoring. In addition to his fencing skills, Athol was known for his building expertise, constructing hay sheds, yards, gates, windbreaks and horticultural structures. He referred to his spades as machines, dug a lot of post holes by hand, and set a daily pace of 100m for an eight-wire post and batten fence. Hew Dalrymple owns and operates Waitatapia Farming near Bulls in partnership with his brother Roger. He estimates Athol would have built kilometres of fences on their property. “What a fantastic man to have had part

of our farming business for many years,” said Hew. “Athol’s work ethic was second to none, and he would take some young men to help with the day’s fencing, and they would be worn out by day’s end. Then Athol would go and cut a load of firewood and take it home or give it to an elderly neighbour. Athol had the biggest heart and was the most caring, generous and giving person. We all thought on the farm here how good it would be to clone Athol as he was such a great asset to the human race.” Work only came to a stop when Athol required a quadruple bypass. Although he never returned to the same workload, Athol did continue helping out his Rongotea neighbour with light farming chores.

a manager’s position for the Ludemann estate. The couple’s third daughter was born while they lived on the farm. Athol’s youngest daughter Donna Chapman said while managing the sheep farm her father would fit in the shearing and fencing for neighbours as well. “He spent many years instructing and encouraging our neighbour, who was in his late teens, to farm the family’s property after his father passed away.” On sales days in Rongotea, Athol was employed by Dalgetys to work in the stockyards. When the farm was put up for sale in 1983, the couple bought a house in Rongotea and Athol worked as a skinner for Consolidated Traders. At the age of 58, Athol passed his national certificate in fencing through New Zealand Wire and went on to establish his own business. He worked as a general fencer in the lower North Island, progressing to become a master in his trade. Nick Liefting of NL Contractors said, in 1988 New Zealand Wire Industries wanted field consultants/ instructors in various regions. “Athol, along with myself and 12 others, were appointed. It was an honourable position, and research was done on each appointee to ensure they had the correct credentials required. Athol’s patch was southern North Island, servicing Manawatu and Wellington,” said Nick. “About 1989, NZ Wire had a huge site at National Fieldays where all of us field consultants/instructors were involved in setting up and conducting fencing demonstrations. Tree Talk with Beaver Tree Services Spring has arrived and with it comes the time to get your gardens in top shape for the upcoming summer months with longer days and warmer weather. It does more than just draw the people from their houses. It also kickstarts the growing season for your trees, which is why it’s a good idea to check on the health and growth of your trees after winter. During winter, trees enter a dormant growth phase, due to the colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours

being unsuitable for long periods of growth. In spring, as trees come out of this dormant phase, it’s a good idea to check your garden and trees for disease and dead branches as these will hinder their upcoming growing season. To keep your trees healthy and get them ready for the summer season, remove dead or diseased wood, and

Offering expert advice for mowing As the Manawatu spring winds start to die down, now is the time to plan ahead for the biggest grass growing months of the year.

As we move towards more sustainable options in motors, Central Mowers is positioned to offer expert advice on which product will meet your needs and whether battery power is a viable option for you. Masport M-TECH® is a new power management system that provides the latest lithium-ion battery technology to power a brushless induction electric motor that will match the performance of many domestic petrol engines. The blade system, handle, wheels, catcher and cutting deck used on this range of mowers is the same as used on petrol-powered models, so there is no compromise in quality or performance. If you are in need of (or want) the latest technology ,look no further than the Cub Cadet Electric range, with an E30 Mini Rider and ENX15 with mowing time of up to 1.5 hours, or up to two acres, with fast charge capabilities. There’s no need for oil changes, no filters or spark plugs to change and no more buying petrol. The first shipment has sold out, but Central Mowers has

a demo model ENX15 in store for customers to view and is taking orders for the next shipment due in January 2021. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the demonstration video on a local lawn. For those who are petrol proud, Central Mowers showroom has more than 70 petrol-powered products on show including log splitters, chippers, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and rotary hoes. Visit Rob, Megan, Alex, Heath, Stacey and Sue at 696 Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North for good old-fashioned customer service.

Coenzyme Q10 for energy Our mitochondria are our cell engines that take the energy from food and change this into the energy our bodies need. Free radicals can damage delicate cell structures causing less energy to be made. Some diseases can damage mitochondria. Studies show that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome weakens mitochondria resulting in significantly less energy than in healthy people. The result is always tiredness but other symptoms are determined by the type of disease. For example, in MS, mitochondrial changes occur, leading to nerve myelin damage. The first step to improve energy is to add coenzyme Q10. Be aware that most of the CoQ10 on the market is low-cost semi-synthetic material. I prefer high-grade, naturally fermented material. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a good, cheap CoQ10. There are several reasons why some need extra coenzyme Q10. The most common is those taking statin cholesterol-lowering medication. The most common side effects are tiredness, mood issues and muscle weakness and pain. Mostly due to the fact they reduce circulating CoQ10. Interestingly, the maker of the topselling statin in the world holds patents

to combine CoQ10 with statins. They just have never made it. Perhaps this would reduce the financial viability of the drug? Some health problems, especially autoimmune disease, can increase demand for CoQ10. Additionally, our ability to produce sufficient CoQ10 diminishes with age causing tiredness. These help to increase energy output, support flagging energy processes and reduce free radical damage by actively targeting the free radicals that damage delicate energy systems. A combination of a good diet and these beneficial supplements can make a real difference in life quality for those with low energy. Most people feel a difference within a few months. Leading scientist shifts climate parameters by Andy Bryenton

Farmers and rural contractors economically threatened by laws based on methane and its role in climate change have a new reason for hope, as a leading climate scientist makes calls to downgrade the threat level of this commonly occurring gas. The implications for carbon taxation are enormous. With debate already raging over the balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the necessity for a robust rural economy, the recalculation of the impact of methane on the climate by one of the leading scientists in the field has provided rhetorical ammunition for the pro-agriculture lobby. Spokesperson for Kiwi agricultural science advocacy group, Facts About Ruminant Methane (FARM), Robin Grieve, says that it is

For all your Cartage and Groundspreading needs

‘almost unbelievable’ that one of the leading methane scientists in the world, Dr Myles Allen, has adjusted the calculation of methane harm from 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) to a mere seven times. Dr Allen is no climate change denier, and neither is he a poorly informed secondary source. The respected doctor is head of the Climate Dynamics group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department. He leads the world in computer simulation modelling of climate change and has won many scientific awards for his work. Now, FARM reports that he’s insisting that the European Union drop the official figure of ‘28 times more potent than CO2’ and accept the new calculation he backs. The implications for Kiwi lawmakers are just as vast, and in an election year, even more, pressing. “That is critical information to New Zealand, where the government and FARM SUPPLIES | IRRIGATION | COMMERCIAL DOMESTIC SUPPLIES | LIFESTYLE BLOCKS WELL REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

will slash 26,000 tonnes off New Zealand’s carbon emissions overnight — approximately a 32% reduction.” FARM is demanding the government, the relevant agencies and the industry step back from the whole idea that methane is a significant problem until the science is settled enough to determine whether it is or not. There should be no financial imposition on farmers for ruminant methane emissions based on guesswork and uncertain science, they say.

even farming industry groups have accepted the notion that methane is 28 times stronger than CO2,” says Robin Grieve. “The potential cost to farmers to work with this concept was going to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Reducing the ratio by 400% shows just how wrong everyone has been. Yet they were willing to advise policymakers to put farming under huge pressure to conform. HOME & LIFESTYLE SHOW

Home and lifestyle inspiration by Andy Bryenton

After a long winter of Covid countermeasures, it’s great to announce that inspiration, innovation and style are back on centre stage. The Manawatu Home and Lifestyle Show has been passed the torch as big events in Auckland and beyond were forced to postpone. The massive showcase of more than 250 exhibitors in Palmerston North now promises the first look at 2021’s new styles and home technologies. On November 20, 21 and 22 those looking to redesign and or build in style will flock to the Central Energy Trust Arena, to get a first glimpse of the latest and greatest options for a modern home.

There’s a mixture of practical options and pure aesthetics at any home show, and this will be no exception. Ideas to save on electricity bills and water heating, tips on insulation and winter warmth, summer shade and outdoor entertaining. New appliances, which save space and reduce waste. AG CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS Top of the class performance by Andy Bryenton

When it’s time to bale, speed and efficiency are of the utmost importance, allowing more ground to be covered quickly and more bales stacked away before fickle weather deals out its usual blows. Ease of maintenance is key to this efficiency in many situations, and that’s one of the reasons Claas have developed their new Rollant 520 range, replacing the 374 and 375 at Europe’s Agritechnica. Here in New Zealand, the cutting edge of Claas baling technology is represented by their Variant range, which utilises the same kind of advanced engineering as the new metal from the EU. There are multiple options across the range, suitable for farming and contracting operations big and small. The base model of the international Claas range employs a system of stub augers and underfloor tines to convey material into the chamber. However, the Variant in NZ boasts an upgrade to Claas’ Roto Feed technology, boosting intake with its advanced spiral rotor layout. A very popular addition to the range is the Roto Cut system, which employs a series of mechanised knives to cut crop materials before they’re ingested. This optional chopping mechanism has 14 knives, with a theoretical cut length of 70mm. The knives have individual protection against foreign objects to

prevent blunting and chipping while at work in the field. Bale shape and density are under complete control with Claas. It only takes six seconds for a finished bale to be deployed from the back of the implement from the time the door starts to open. That’s a figure more impressive than the drop-top convertible speed of some supercars, during which a uniformly formed, easy-to-handle bale is deposited. Roto Cut knives are automatically deactivated at the end of each bale and automatically cleaned after every fifth bale. Blockages are easily cleared from the cab, with the push of a button, adding to another aspect Claas has not left to chance; operator comfort. Claas has continued to impress with its bigger, more tech-heavy range of self-wrapping balers, but even the

Kiwi farmer beats the world by Andy Bryenton

A kiwi crop farmer is standing by his trusty machinery as the linchpin of his success, as he brings home a Guinness world record for massive arable land production. Eric Watson, from Wakanui near Ashburton, has broken his own Guinness World Record for the highest average wheat yield of 17.398 tonnes a hectare. Working with his wife Maxine, he set the previous record of 16.791 tonnes with feed wheat in 2017. Irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand average about 12 tonnes a hectare. He puts his success down to precision farming, with the right tools. Eric defines ‘precision farming’ in New Zealand in many ways, particularly in his use of machinery and implement technology at the cutting edge. When asked how to win a world record, he’d answer that it comes from making small incremental gains across many facets of the farming business. One example; through a combination of operator control and advanced software, like Case IH’s AFS Harvest Command system, he leaves little to waste on the deep soils of his coastal property. “That new automation; it’s quicker than the human. We always think we can beat computers, but you can’t beat that. The command system knows

what to do before you even see it on the screen,” he says. However, it’s less driver-intensive than the machinery of yesteryear. “It does work extremely well. It just takes a bit of getting used to, and you get a bit bored because you don’t have to do much. You run auto settings, and you’ve just got to sit there.” As a long-time Case IH customer, Eric says the red brand’s latest technology is a sizeable step ahead on one of his original machines, an old International 1460. A favourite feature in his Case IH Axial-Flow 250 Series combine is the CVT rotor drive technology, which increases efficiency and reduces the chance of crop blockage. When you spend as much time in the seat as Eric, it’s a pleasure not having to get out to unblock it. Eric enjoys a productivity gain, no matter where it comes from. For his recent wheat record, he switched wheat variety and went from solid urea to liquid form to improve spreading. He also swears by using a tracked unit to prevent soil compaction,

Eric Watson, world record-holding farmer, with Graeme Moore of CASE IH and the big red harvester, which drove Eric to victory

knowing that soil health is another incremental gain area for maximum growth next cycle. Ever-modest, Eric quietly admits to being a bit blown

away by his latest yield gain. “However, you’re always monitoring and trying a few new things, including a different crop as well.”

WOOD IS GOOD Forestry news and events: October

Our People in Forestry – Collaboration in Forestry for the Waingawa Log Storage Yard The rail project for logs to Wellington from Masterton was started by Forest Enterprises, Kiwi Rail, C3 and Centre Port in 2012 with a target of 10 wagons (350 tonne) per day. Stock was held in a gravel area adjacent to the tracks. Since then this operation has grown to include 3 other forestry companies, Farman Turkington Forestry, Forest360 and recently China Forestry Group. A company Log Distribution Ltd has formed with members of this group to manage the flow of logs into the yard and onto the rail. Centre Port and Kiwi Rail joined with considerable investment of approximately 7.8 million dollars over eight months in 2020 to increase the log yard size to

just over 1.5 ha. The entire area is now sealed and Kiwi Rail installed new sidings for moving carriages.

loaders and a high stacker 7 days a week. All logs are scaled and ticketed in Masterton, and trains are now loaded 7 days a week.

C3 has also invested considerably in this project since the start, their staff grew to 21 and they currently operate 3

Capacity for cartage has outstripped all initial concepts with now 2 trains per day and 30 carriages taking stock to

Will you plant 7 trees a day? As a sector forestry and wood processing is leading the way in New Zealand for achieving the Government’s zero carbon economy. In addition to the obvious environmental benefits forestry delivers, the sector can generate employment like no other. Already supporting approximately 30,000 jobs in New Zealand, there is capacity to increase this significantly. In terms of energy, the NZ wood processing sector is already at least 70% selfsufficient (using the biomass from wood waste). Effectively, our sector runs a large scale

bioenergy generator that has a great capacity to substitute for fossil fuels. Wooden construction materials trap and hold carbon in building over the long term. Although to our sorrow, New Zealand does not yet acknowledge this environmental performance in the NZ Building Code or in with “Wood First” policies. Chances are your house is storing about 9 tons of carbon. (the average for a family home) Did you know that to drive your fossil fuelled car and offset average travel for one

day, you need to plant 7 trees every day! You might not have the will or the land to do this, but luckily for you, there is an entire industry doing just that. Forestry has proven we have the right climate and land type to grow some the best and fastest softwood plantations in the world. We’ve proven we can make low emission and biodegradable alternatives to less environmentally friendly products. Let’s hope that policies will evolve to embrace one of the only carbon zero renewable resource available to us and help us change our ways.

Wellington Port. 5700 tonnes per week is now moving down the line, estimates are that this has removed 10,000 truck movements off the Rimutaka Hill road in 2019. Log truck movements are now shorter with many more trips between the forest and the Waingawa yard. Currently there are 2-3 log ships per week carrying out of Wellington and this is approximately 10% of the national export. Started locally this project has shown the investment and dedication of local users to support the flow of our product for exports and in response to community concerns of log trucks on the Rimutaka Hill. Members have a common interest in ensuring the long-term success of the sector. Membership is open to any company or individual with an interest in the local wood industry. trees grow carbon and how the emissions trading scheme works in New Zealand. How everyday consumers invest in local forests and trade their shares was also explained along with how geographical information systems work in measuring forest growth. SNI Wood Council provided the high vis vests for the day that the students took home along with more ideas of what subjects to take at school if they are wanting to work in these industries. It is important to expose students to different industries than those they know from home, and certainly there were some eyes opened to the possibilities. Paparata Elite Romney: focussed on building FE tolerance by Trevor Johnson, Owner/Director

Extract from the Beef and Lamb resource book — Facing Up to Facial Eczema. ‘The liver damage associated with FE results in production losses that are much greater than may first appear. Even when no symptoms are visible, FE can reduce lifetime productivity by up to 25 per cent. ‘Breeding for increased tolerance to FE should be your first line of defence.’ Why lifting FE tolerance is a smart idea for all sheep farmers. Lifting the FE tolerance in your sheep is essential for farmers farming in an eczema-prone area — a live sheep is always going to outperform a dead one. If you do not farm in an FE prone area look out, the climate is warming, and eczema is creeping down the country. Buying rams with FE tolerance could protect your flock in the future. If you think you will never be threatened by FE, then it also makes sense to lift flock tolerance levels. You have a larger market when selling store. Those farmers farming in an FE prone area will not buy lambs that do not have FE tolerance. You have more buyers. Paparata FE tolerance building programme

In 1999, after some heavy sheep losses earlier in the decade when FE turned up in the King Country, Paparata decided to lift the FE tolerance levels of the Paparata ewe flock. From 1999 all outside sires used over the recorded flock needed to have been FE tolerance tested at a high level. In the same year, a testing programme was begun on the high-ranking homebred rams to check their tolerance levels. Those rams showing the highest tolerance levels are used over the recorded flock. The dose rate has moved up each year as the flock tolerance levels moved up although this took time. I would like to point out — only tested rams are used over the recorded flock, and this has been the practice for the last 20 years. We have tested at .5 this year, which is getting up there, given that the high tolerance breeders test at .5 and .6. It has taken 20 years to get Paparata up to this level. Do you want to build FE tolerance levels in your flock? Good questions to ask a ram breeder.
