ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

septi-cure is: › Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage

› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

The Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Bill is presently being considered by the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee. The bill is aimed at improving safety in all workplaces, including farms, but Federated Farmers and Fish & Game are concerned it will also inadvertently prevent people enjoying farms for recreation. “There are growing fears this bill could put at risk longcherished access across farms to rivers, lakes and mountains. This could well mean people are unable to go tramping, fishing or hunting, or even have a swim in the local swimming hole on a hot summer’s day, said Bryce Johnson, Fish & Game chief executive Fish & Game chief executive Bryce Johnson. why some think it’s not worth the risk Fish & Game has received numerous if the Health and Safety in Employment reports from outdoors enthusiasts who Amendment Bill is not transparent on have been denied recreational access access safety responsibilities. across farms because they believe Federated Farmers’ Health and Safety WorkSafe has told the landowner the law spokesperson Katie Milne said she requires everyone, including recreational hopes when the Bill is reported back visitors, to report to the farmhouse for a to parliament that it will make farmers’ full hazard briefing and to sign a hazard obligations totally clear. “I can understand why farmers threw identification form. “Under the present law, this is not up their hands in horror when they saw a legal requirement and the select the bill’s first draft and looked around committee is still considering any for ‘no trespassing’ signs to nail to their proposed changes. Seasonal workers welcomed

An increase of 1,000 seasonal workers announced by government brings some welcome relief to the growing horticulture industry, says Horticulture New Zealand Chief Executive Mike Chapman. Government has increased the number of workers under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme to 10,500 for the 2016–17 season. “While the horticulture industry is strongly focussed on getting New Zealanders into permanent work, at harvest time it is essential to have extra hands to get crops out of the fields and onto the consumers’ plates quickly,” said Mr Chapman. “The RSE scheme celebrates 10 years next year and it is a win-win initiative that gives horticulture and viticulture a critical workforce at its busiest time, while allowing workers from mostly the Pacific Islands to gain invaluable experience and the chance of being able to send money back to their communities at home. “Some of our growers have had the same workers coming for the duration of the RSE scheme and they have close bonds. This is a fantastic scheme and it is not taking away any local jobs. “HortNZ has a number of programmes to get New Zealanders into permanent work and the RSE is separate to that. In fact, by handling the harvest, RSE has allowed the horticulture industry to grow and employ more New Zealand workers in permanent roles.” The horticulture and viticulture industry is New Zealand’s

fourth largest export industry and aims to increase exports to $10 billion by 2020. Seasonal workers from the Pacific are an important part of a sector that employs around 60,000 people across New Zealand. RSE workers come from the eligible Pacific countries of Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru and Fiji. Horticulture New Zealand, along with its affiliated organisations, represents the interests of New Zealand’s 5,500 commercial fruit and vegetable growers. Based in Wellington, it works in key areas of advocacy which affect all growers including biosecurity, food safety, seasonal labour, education and training needs of the industry, and resource management issues around New Zealand. The New Zealand horticulture industry is valued at more than $5 billion, with $3 billion in exports. The horticulture industry’s goal is to reach a value of $10 billion by 2020. Combined with viticulture, it is New Zealand’s fourth largest export industry.

Alan Jones keeps the waste water treatment property in park like conditions

hen you think of a wastewater treatment plant, a treelined entrance with perfectly manicured lawns and livestock grazing in the distance is probably not a setting that comes to mind, yet that is what Alan has accomplished on this property. “Most people don’t really know that the fenced-off land, which neighbours Rosedale Park, is part of the treatment plant that serves almost 240,000 people living between Devonport and Long Bay,” said Alan. “If they work out what the pond is, then it might give them a clue.” Alan has lived in Albany for 54 years and worked for Watercare for 43. He

started when Utility was the North Shore Drainage Board, and he is the longestserving member of the Rosedale team by 13 years. The ponds, which are visible from either side of the Northern Motorway, hold the treated wastewater, allowing sunlight to naturally disinfect remaining bacteria. Further disinfection using ultraviolet light is provided before the treated wastewater is discharged by gravity almost three kilometres out to sea from Mairangi Bay. Over the decades Alan has planted thousands of trees on the property, the majority of which are native. “Originally we had problems with the odours

because the plant was so open and exposed. The trees and greenery really help to make it look better,” he said. “Once I started getting it looking right, I just wanted to keep going, to keep on with it. It would be a lot easier to mow without all of the trees — I could do it with a tractor instead of the small mower — but the grounds wouldn’t look anywhere near as good.” Alan’s manager Simon Findlay says the Rosedale grounds are recognised within the international water industry for their ‘outstanding’ landscaping. “This recognition is entirely due to Alan’s high standards, hard work and dedication over the years.” For those that think working on the treatment plant must be smelly, Alan says the smell is only perceived. “I firmly believe that, as well as the treatment process improvements over the years, an aesthetically-pleasing environment has helped to change such thinking and I don’t notice a smell at all.” He also manages the livestock of 58 lambs and 46 cattle to help him keep the grass under control. “We buy very quiet stock — generally Hereford crosses that are 18 months to two years old. We buy them at auction from Wellsford and they are not fazed at all by the traffic or park visitors. There is even a heliport near here and they get used to the helicopters coming and going in no time at all,” said Alan. The stock are moved around as required as their job is to keep the grass down. “Currently we have 46 cattle and are about to buy some lambs. We rotate them around the 17 different paddocks. “We usually buy Suffolk lambs or Suffolk crosses. I buy them as store lambs, which means they are weaned. We keep them for four to six months and sell them once they have fattened up and before they need shearing. “Quite

He doesn’t require dogs to shift the stock as the cattle respond to being called. Alan says being so close to the city and traffic does not affect grass quality in any way, but if others were to buy stock for land near the motorway, he would suggest ensuring they buy quiet stock that will cope with the city noise, as he does.

“I

am originally from Liverpool in the United Kingdom and had my first calf-club calf when I was nine years old. It was a Jersey my uncle gave to me called Cutie Pie,” said Michele. Whilst in the United Kingdom, Michele started working with horses in her teenage years. “I rode and showed horses in Ireland and Austria, and I rode Arab race horses for people in Newmarket in the UK. I

also worked for two top trainers — one was Luca Cumani who often has horses in the Melbourne Cup, and I also rode for the top sprint trainer Bill O’gorman.” Michele’s family moved to New Zealand in 1970. “My daughter Bridget had calf club for a couple of years and then I decided that we would show cattle. My experience with horses has helped me greatly in getting stock prepped for shows because it is a similar concept

and it’s great because cows don’t bite and kick like horses can,” says Michele. She started showing Jersey cattle, borrowing calves from a friend and then they were given a heifer calf. “We picked a Jersey which we called Poppy and we love her to bits. She is now our matriarch and my 11-year-old son Gregory has continued to show that line. We have four generations from Poppy.” Michele says showing cattle takes a lot of commitment and requires a lot of travel. “The season has started and we have shows most weekends. Hopefully I will get to judge a couple. I enjoy showing — there are trials that come with it but you work with it. I don’t do this for me so much anymore — I started doing this for Bridget but she is off doing her own now so I do it for Gregory. He has mild autism and it is good for him as it means he has to talk and interact with people. “I don’t use expensive semen, all my heifer calves are homebred and I still show at the top end of the scale. It does cost a lot of money but you just do what you have to for the stock. To me if it is good on the inside, it is good on the outside. I feed them all sorts of things including oil, salt, silage, meal, and I ensure they are drenched.” Michele says people viewing the stock at the shows often don’t realise how much work is involved to prepare the cattle. “They see animals with lovely shiny coats and big eyelashes but this has taken hours of work before the journey. There is washing, clipping and grooming and it takes up to two hours to pack the truck ensuring you have everything for

the trip. It can get stressful but once you are there it’s great. “We are not only representing ourselves and our stud but also Jersey and Holstein, Purebred and Ayrshire New Zealand. As I judge and breed I need to represent those societies and myself to the best I can. It takes a lot of work every day for a long time to get a new animal ready to show. “You need to get them leading, especially the big ones. You need to be able to keep the head up as this helps control the animal. Once that head is down you are in trouble,” she says. “It is good when you have children interested in showing. I offer to help people to choose a calf at a sale because I find it hard to see children with pretty calves that because of some bad fault, they will never do particularly well. a ribbon is just fantastic, so why not get that ribbon with a great animal. Michele says animals can also look good on paper but may not be good at all. “It is important to get good advice and then hopefully you will get an animal of quality. The children have to talk to the judges and answer questions, and this boosts their confidence and helps with their social skills — when they get a ribbon their faces just light up. “For Gregory, it gives him a real sense of confidence and he knows he can do his best and often get a ribbon, and that boosts his confidence every time.”

Dargaville Vet Centre staff Dee Bishnell and Sarah Bird prepare a labrador cross named Bella for a cesarean just became my direction.” The next year Doug moved to the United Kingdom where he worked in a variety of roles as well as starting his own practice with a friend near Wimbledon. Doug met his New Zealand born wife who is also a vet, when he was at university. She had travelled to South Africa to attend a vet student conference which Doug had helped organise and they hit it off. They kept in contact and then met up again when they both found themselves in the United Kingdom and the rest, as they say, is history. In 2009 they returned to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch where Doug did some emergency work before joining a pharmaceutical company. “I looked after all the companion animal health

products and provided veterinary advice on those products.” He says after spending some time away from the hands-on side of vet work he is looking forward to being able to make a difference everyday. “I have missed the hands on and the problem solving and the interaction with the animal owners.” Doug says a good vet is someone who can listen to the pet’s owner, be patient and explain things well, and is someone who has a wide range of knowledge regardless of age, breed, or species of animal. “It is important to be able to look at a problem, communicate well and have empathy,” he says. He says his work, although it can be tough at times, has many up sides.

Doug Passmore and colleague Joanna Bruin with two of Bella’s pups “From a veterinary point of view the most rewarding thing is seeing the change you can make with animals. Making that diagnosis, treating the animal and seeing them respond. The other thing is providing advice to owners so that they can care for the animals and prevent a lot of illness. I think preventative health care is more important than waiting until something happens and providing treatment.” Seeing the special bond between animal and human is another positive that Doug enjoys about his work. “It never ceases to amaze me at how deep that relationship can be. Being a part of that and being entrusted to make decisions about people’s pets is pretty special.”

ADVERTORIAL

Healthy people, healthy planet by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

While we continue to use chemical fertilisers, we will need to continue with chemical toxic sprays, which will keep us on a chemical treadmill; down the road to soil erosion and environmental destruction. For approximately 400 million years our planet has supported many forms of life without exhausting any reserves and the main reason for that is Mother Nature’s recycling system which keeps production sustainable year in, year out. After only a hundred odd years of chemical production we are going backwards. Chemicals have stifled and choked nature’s natural recycling system to a point that pollution on the planet is a major problem and increasing. Here at Agrissentials Research Centre we have

the answer to the problem. The first step is to stop using chemicals, they increase their own market, but in reality they don’t work — chemicals are causing the problem! We have reached the point where large pharmaceutical companies have run out of chemicals to fight pest, disease and weeds, and even today antibiotics are losing their power to keep people alive. The ultimate point to start a Renaissance is first and foremost the top soil — to bring health and vitality

back to the soil. When the soil is right, everything above and below the soil falls into place, the sustenance of all life is taken care of. That’s how Mother Nature’s systems work. A hundred years of pest, disease and weed eradication has not only failed, but it has increased the immunity of pest, disease and weeds. So, in reality, that is the answer. We need to strengthen the immune systems of plants, animals and people and to do that, we need to have a full array of minerals in our diet to strengthen and build our immune system — it’s no big deal! It is the deal! However, the corporate food industry and the agriculture food industry, over the past 50 years or so, have taken the important minerals out of our diet, in particular the trace elements which are an essential part to building immunity. Here at Agrissentials we recognise that all health problems indicate a mineral deficiency, the hard part is trying to find out what mineral or minerals are missing in the diet. To cover this scenario, Agrissentials have developed multi-mineral, microbial rich BioGro certified natural fertilisers that contain a full array of minerals to cover all basis. All the mineral immunity

and health is designed to come through the food chain. That is not happening and the fast food chain is a clear example of that. To grow a strong healthy plant you need minerals, microbes, sunlight and water. Agrissentials fertility system is based on a multi-mineral, microbial rich method. The first creatures at the mineral dining table are the microorganisms. They convert the natural minerals to a plant available form. They lock the minerals in humus (organic matter), so they won’t leach from the soil. The plant takes up the minerals when needed. The minerals are recognised by the plant at the cellular level — the ultimate level for plant uptake. The plant converts the minerals to an animal and human available form where everything is aligned to health and vitality. This is a beautiful system containing all the checks and balance for a healthy life and healthy planet. WATER MATTERS

Life in a drop of water by Andy Bryenton

There is a good argument to be made that all of civilisation exists just so we can have — and just because we have — a supply of pure water. Our nomad ancestors settled down to farm at oases and by rivers, which is why the oldest inhabited places in Egypt, for example, are around wells and on the banks of the Nile. But take a look at the quality of water in developing countries today and it’s easy to see why so many of our ancestors suffered ill health — and even death — from bad water. Before the knowledge of germs and bacteria, tainted water was a killer which took more lives than warfare. All that changed with the discoveries of two early scientists, back in the time when a knowledge of the workings of nature was still considered witchcraft by the credulous. Today’s modern ultraviolet purification and filter

technology relies on knowing that there are things in the water to kill or to sift out! While people knew that obviously unclean water — brown, turgid, stagnant — was bad to drink in Regency era London, nobody knew why. The first man to peer into a droplet of water and see what he called ‘animacules’ — germs — was the polymath genius Robert Hooke. A contemporary of Isaac Newton (who he’d later argue with over questions of gravity and calculus), Hooke had already contributed to the For

fields of medicine, physics, chemistry and optics before he took one of the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens’ magnifying lenses and looked not up at the stars, but down into a puddle. In the same year that he discovered water was full of living tiny creatures — and correctly deduced that they were a source of sickness — he also invented an improved pocketwatch, a better way to lower and raise ship’s anchors, and came up with the idea of the internal combustion engine — though he wanted to run it on gunpowder, not petrol. However it’s his book Microscopia which allowed later scientists and engineers to work out how to filter water, making it safe to drink and slashing disease and death. Farm filtrations systems today owe all their healthgiving benefits to this largely unknown genius from 400 years ago.

Harnessing the sun for water by Andy Bryenton

Today more than ever before, water is necessary to get the most out of arable land and pasture. Modern practices of intensive farming demand optimum conditions for plants at the root level, and delivering the correct amount of irrigation has become a matter controlled, in some instances, by electronic probes and computer mapping. Modern methods of monitoring may be able to pinpoint areas in need of water, but all of this is useless unless there is a ready supply. Relying on an unpredictable climate which can serve up storms one year and droughts the next means that security only comes from having a buffer of supply — dams, bores and ponds which can take up the slack when necessary. The problem with a distributed water supply, however, is reticulation — the issue of getting pipes to where they’re needed, and the added issue of getting power to far-flung pumps. While diesel and petrol pumps have proven useful, this kind of userinteraction heavy method chews up time and resources. It’s great for short-run, high-volume pumping, but in many arid countries ‘sipping’ a little from each well has proven a better method. This has given rise to robust, no-maintenance solar pump technology which is now finding its way onto Kiwi farms. Once dismissed as a means for pumping water only to bird baths and ornamental fountains, solar power now ‘juices up’ massive centre-pivot irrigation operations in the United States, and has proven indispensable in bringing clean water to developing nations. A variety of companies offer competing ruralapplication solar water pumps in New

A device from the early 1800s known as a Stirling Engine has been demonstrated to work well for constantflow, small volume pumping solutions. The Stirling Engine works by means of a heat gradient — its top plate is warmed by the sun, while its lower plate is cooled by the very water it draws up to pump. So long as the temperatures are different, the engine keeps working, and its lack of moving parts and relative simplicity make it a possible future technology — recovered from the past — to aid in filling troughs and irrigating rows on tomorrow’s farms.

Pure water from pure light by Andy Bryenton

Water from many different sources goes into sustaining a modern farm — from tanks, collected from the homestead rooftop, from dams, bores, rivers, streams and ponds. Some is for irrigation, some for livestock, some for people — but where that water is for drinking, you’ll usually find an ultraviolet purification device. Today we take it for granted that a certain wavelength of light can destroy the tiny creatures like cryptosporidium and giardia that lurk in unpurified water. But when you think about it, the very concept is rather strange. The cleansing power of light was discovered by two researchers in 1878, Arthur Downes

and Thomas P Blunt. They noted that the tiny moving specks seen under a microscope suddenly fell still when exposed to certain wavelengths of light, and they guessed that this would prove a better way of purifying water than the common method of adding chemicals. Further research of ultraviolet light —

The 1903 Nobel prize for medicine went to scientist Niels Finsen for his use of UV against Lupus vulgaris, a form of tuberculosis. Today, a UV filter is a common sight on farms in New Zealand, using the blue-purple light to destroy the cells of waterborne pathogens. However, it’s not just these single-farm applications that use UV. The city of New York has recently switched over to UV purification. To supply the metropolis, a total of 56 energy-efficient UV reactors were installed in 2013 to treat 2.2 billion US gallons (that’s 8,300,000m3) a day. A whole lot more than your average tank or bore!

Focus is firmly on forest safety With demand for wood in new housing at a buoyant level, led by the Christchurch rebuild and housing programmes, and with demand probably increasing after the Kaikoura event, so to has there been a demand for forestry workers able to safely operate mechanised harvesting equipment. With safety at the forefront of the industry, this has led to New Zealand’s first entry-level New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting (Basic Machine Operations) programme. The first students are now using simulators, as well as actual forestry machinery, to learn how to operate in real forest conditions on a threemonth course at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in Rotorua. And reinforcing the focus on safe operation will be a Safety Summit conference series in 2017. “The forest industry has developed major new safety improvements in both culture in the workplace and technologies to reduce harm on the forest floor,” said Forest Industry Engineering Association manager, Gordon Thomson. Registrations are now open for the March 2017 conference series running in Rotorua and Melbourne. An online delegate registration offer is available

for a limited time at www.forestsafety. events. “Our Safety Summit has a great lineup of inspiring and practical speakers. Many of them have already delivered safety outcomes for their teams and clients. So, the case studies they will bring are proven to bring results,” Mr Thomson said. “For the first time FIEA has teamed up with the Forest Industry Safety Council (FISC) to organise a workshop as part of the Safety Summit. Working with Fiona Ewing of FISC has led us to include a series of workshops and panel sessions for people to interact — from the forest floor to the CEOs.” Two key speakers from Canada include Peter Sprout, an experienced tree falling trainer from coastal British Columbia and Richard Lawler, Director of Engineering, Forestry for John Deere Forestry from USA. These keynote speakers are among many local industry

leaders and safety champions who have come forward to support the 3rd FIEA Forest Industry Safety Summit. The conference series sold out in 2013 and 2015, and is running again in March 2017 in Rotorua and Melbourne. It will be held on March 1–2 at the Distinction Hotel in Rotorua. The following week it runs at the Bayview Eden Hotel in Melbourne on March 7–8.

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd

Once again we can report relative price stability across all log sales sectors this month with slight firming being the order of the day. Domestic prices are unchanged except for pruned grade which have moved upward NZ$5 per tonne. Export prices moved upward for November sailings by US$2–3 per cubic metre CIF basis. This, together with a slight downward shift in FOREX, has seen wharf gate prices improve within a range NZ$4–6 per cubic metre. The latest information out of China confirms

consumption running at 68,000 cubic metres per day across the Eastern Seaboard. This compares very closely with the same time last year, reflecting a slight decrease in construction lumber usage versus a slight increase in the furniture and mouldings segment. At this time of year construction is in one of its strongest periods before the onset of winter. Consumption can be expected to reduce shortly as winter bites, particularly in the Northern Provinces. Meanwhile inventory remains at 3.2 million cubic metres which is a very good comfort level, reflecting supply and demand in approximate balance. Meanwhile in the Shaky Isle of the long white mountain dust clouds, markets are strong, domestic consumption has rarely been better and it looks like more of the same going forward. The shortage in supply to local mills has been much less over the last four weeks with few complaining about lack of supply. Prices are stable but there is a small push coming in the bottom end. Domestic pruned log prices have improved with more local mills able to

take advantage of a lower exchange rate and shipping cost to target markets in Australia, United States and China. As always in this segment, log quality is critical to the equation with high quality meaning plenty of clearwood and no defects. With China New Year being much earlier (January 20) we would expect there to be some stress and strain in the supply chain. China will be on holiday when the mid December loadings arrive from New Zealand. The interplay will be how first quarter 2017 volume versus consumption number play out with all indicators telling us it will not take much to upset the price rickshaw. In my last report I covered a Supply Chain Logistics conference I had spoken at in Qingdao in China. I thought it would be useful for readers to learn more about the NZ forest industry which I included in my presentation. So often we assume everyone knows about our industry but I thought I would take some space to recap. • NZ Plantation (planted) forests occupy about 1.8 million hectares • This forest cover represents 7% of NZ total land area • The plantation industry employs about 20,000 people • Annual earnings are just under NZ$5 billion • Revenue is about 3% of GDP • NZ is third largest export earner and has been for 30+ years

• 89% of planted forests area is Radiata pine • 6% is Douglas fir • 5% is Cypress and Eucalyptus • Current harvest volumes are around 29 million cubic metres per annum • Of all sales approx 52% is exported as logs and 48% to domestic mills • It is highly likely annual harvest volumes will not exceed 31 million cubic metres next 10 years • Given loss in stocked area and early harvest based on good prices, there is much less likelihood of a dramatic increase in annual harvest volumes going forward • The plantation area has declined 93,000 hectares since 1990 Annual export sales for all forest products greater than the NZ$1 million includes 38 countries. It is great to see planting forests and woodlots taking on a revival. Associate Primary Industries Minister Jo Goodhew has just confirmed 5.5 million seedlings covering approx 4,800 hectares of new forest area will be established in 2017 as part of the Afforestation Grant Scheme. It is time to get on the planting wagon if you are not already or the opportunity to participate in one of NZ’s highest yielding land based investment options could slip by you. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees.

Love our forests Our ka-rearea does

Our native falcon – the kārearea is one of our most spectacular birds. You can see it on our $20 note. It speeds through the air at more than 100 km/h and catches prey larger than itself. It’s unique and phenomenal. It’s also threatened. Much of the kārearea’s natural habitat has been lost to farming and its numbers further reduced by cats, rats, stoats and weasels. Our plantation forests have become important breeding grounds for this wonderful native bird. They nest there, they hunt there, and they have found a congenial home among the exotic trees – along with many other native species. wingspan.co.nz

Blind cricketer and Northland resident Ming Ming Edgar has been selected to play for the New Zealand Blind Cricket team and will travel to India to take part in the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup early next year. Blind cricket is played much like sighted cricket however bowling is underarm, the stumps are metal to make an audible sound when hit and the ball is plastic with a rattle sound. Ming Ming has been playing cricket for almost two and a half years now since being selected for a development team in 2014. New Zealand Blind Cricket Association president Donna McCaskill says over this time Ming Ming has improved steadily. “It is always positive to see a player showing improvement. Obviously his improvement has been enough to get him selected,” she said. Seventeen players have been chosen from teams across New Zealand to represent the country and they will go on to compete against 10 other countries in New Delhi and Bangalore. “Ming Ming puts his heart and soul into everything he does and has never missed a practice,” his adopted New Zealand mother Gaynor said. Ming Ming is in the category of B1 which is

HUNTING, FISHING & OUTDOORS Where safety is paramount The summer season has begun with a fishing tragedy on the Kaipara harbour bar, where the Helensville charter boat Francie rolled with the loss of eight lives, a grim reminder that the sea can be a cruel master. It certainly brings home the fact that safety on the water is paramount and good preparation, safety equipment and caution are vital for any fisher

heading off to cast their lines at sea. As coastguard simply warns: If in doubt, don’t go out. While fishing on the Kaipara harbour has produced a mixed bag in regards to winter fishing, recent catches have been

promising with good quotas of snapper on some trips. On the east coast, windy weather has kept boats at home, but those who have ventured out report some good snapper catches, with the edge of the shipping channels closer to the big city fishing well. Moving northwards the signs are also good and in fact fishing in the Bream Bay area has been described as ‘hot’ just off the coast on the foul ground off Uretiti. Anglers forced to stick close to the coastline have been reaping the rewards on the foul ground at Uretiti and Waipu out to Bream Tail. The Fishing Website

reports that birds, kingfish and kahawai have been pushing the bait, mainly big schools up against the foul and the shoreline, with catches in as little as five metres of water. As well as snapper, there were some good kahawai, modest-sized kingfish and John Dory landed. Scallop grounds off the east coast are also doing well according to some boaties who have managed quota catches. Not so the well-fished beds off Tinopai in the Kaipara, where the dredges have stayed in the shed. But keep the radio tuned in, the mobile phones dry, life jackets at the ready, and have a safe seaborne summer.

Predator free board appointed The company which will be a key player in achieving New Zealand’s Predator Free 2050 ambition is now up and running. The official establishment of Predator Free 2050 Ltd and the appointment of a skilled board of nine directors has been marked recently. “This company and its leadership will be absolutely integral to the success of the Predator Free 2050 programme. “Their role will be to direct investment into regionally significant predator eradication projects and the breakthrough science solutions we need to achieve predator free status,” says Conser vation minister Maggie Barry. Formation of the company was signalled in July, when the Government committed to the ambitious goal of eradicating rats, stoats and possums from New Zealand by 2050. PF2050 Ltd will receive $6 million per year of new government funding to invest in regionally significant predator eradication projects and breakthrough science. It is expected to leverage additional contributions from business, local government and philanthropists of approximately $10 million per year. Combining the current $70 million a year spent on predator control with the additional central and leveraged funding will result in a programme of investment estimated at more than $3 billion through to 2050. Since the announcement in July, DOC and councils have identified 90 current and potential regional-scale projects across public and private land. “To

Maggie Barry, Conservation minister

achieve this goal we all need to work together — we back New Zealanders’ ingenuity, know-how and commitment to achieve the vision,” says Ms Barry. “The directors have been chosen for their wide range of skills and crosssector experience. I have absolute confidence they are the right people for the job.” Jane Taylor has been appointed as chair of the nine-member board. Ms Taylor is also the chair of Landcare Research and NZ Post. The other eight directors will be Sir Rob Fenwick, Chris Liddell, Jeff Grant, Gary Lane, Traci Houpapa, Warren Parker, David MacLeod and Arihia Bennett. The board is expected to hold its first formal meeting in January.

How much better can I be? About 500 people a year contact me for the first time. Most contact me because they have some type of health issue. The majority of these are under the care of their GP but are seeking diet, supplement and lifestyle measures that are complementary to medical treatment. The best thing about what I do is to share with clients health improvements they never thought possible. So here is the real question. How much better can I be than I am now? By way of example someone contacted me in May this year. He had significant knee pain from osteoarthritis that caused discomfort and severely limited his mobility. His only medical options were heavy pain relief and a future knee replacement. He had been proactive and was already taking supplements that helped a little. We made a number of changes to his diet. I made changes to his supplement programme in particular initially targeting 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin, 200mg of 95% curcumin, 6,000mg of fish oil and a number of anti-inflammatory

antioxidants. The results after 6 months have surpassed what he expected. He has much less pain and in his own words just the odd twinge. He is back exercising, has more energy and just feels better. Joint problems are the most common reason for people contacting me. Our goal is firstly to reduce the unwanted inflammation often the cause of much of the pain. Secondly we add antioxidant compounds such as curcumin (from turmeric) and the potent grape antioxidants like ActiVin® grape seed extract and its twin Resveratrol. Thirdly we add the building blocks of cartilage to improve the function of cartilage and other joint tissues. If you have joint problems, how much better can you be? Feel free to contact me. How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Boost for genetics

In a landmark trans-Tasman collaboration, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics and Meat & Livestock Australia are committing a total of $5.2 million over three years towards major joint beef research projects. New Zealand beef genetics research is about to get a ‘shot in the arm’, thanks to the landmark transTasman collaboration. All projects within the collaboration — regardless of which side of the Tasman they fall on — will be overseen by B+LNZ Genetics. B+LNZ Genetics general manager Graham Alder says the collaboration means every one dollar of New Zealand farmer levy investment translates to $3.50 of research funding. “The research and development needs of New Zealand and Australian producers are well-aligned. It makes sense for scientists on both sides of the Tasman to work together to solve common problems,” Mr Alder said. “Beef genetics research in New Zealand has been underfunded for 30 years. This partnership means research can progress and the results communicated out to breeders and commercial farmers many years earlier. For Australia, it means faster progress and an opportunity to advance projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead.” The partnership centres around the trans-Tasman Beef Cow Profitability

Programme, which aims to balance desirable maternal traits in beef cows, with the finishing performance of the calves and their ability to meet quality carcase specifications. The programme will develop genetic measures for better describing the important physical attributes of the cow — such as size, body condition and her ability handle fluctuations in feed availability, fertility indicators in heifers, and selection tools for easy decision-making. It will also investigate how different environments and farm systems in both countries impact on the balance of traits required to produce an economically efficient cow. This research will also help underpin advancements in genomic technology. Who is involved? In Australia: the University of Adelaide and the University of New England’s Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit. In New Zealand: AbacusBio and Massey University. Commercial beef farmers and bull breeders will also be heavily involved, along with Angus New Zealand and the New Zealand Hereford Association. The research will draw on existing projects already underway in commercial

farm settings. In New Zealand, B+LNZ Genetics’ Beef Progeny Test and Maternal Cow Project will feed into the research. In Australia, inclusion of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Programme and Hereford Progeny Test are being considered by the respective breed associations, with solid initial interest. The programme kicked off with a joint meeting of Australian and New Zealand beef breeders, farmers and science providers on November 14–15 in Albury-Wodonga.

LIFESTYLE BLOCKS

The economics of small blocks

SELF DRIVE HIRE

by Paul Campbell

DIGGERS, ROLLERS, DUMPERS ETC...

Getting a good income from small blocks of land — lifestyle blocks — in New Zealand can be a struggle, and market research should be the first step in deciding what to grow and sell. There are of course the basics: potatoes, onions and squash, but these need to be produced on a commercial scale to provide a good return. There are more than 50 different varieties of vegetables, flowers and seeds grown, and striking the right product can add to a small block bank balance. In the year ahead, avocado production is to prove lucrative with new figures showing horticultural exports including avocados, vegetables and flowers are forecast to surpass $500 million and that’s good news for the Northland region. In turn it means local and farmers markets here at home will be keen for supplies. The country is fortunate that small lifestyle blocks are still within the economic grasp of many, who can pursue their dreams of partial selfsufficiency by putting food on the table with some left for sale — or green dollar barter — traded for such foodstuffs as eggs or meat from like-minded growers. Some have criticised small blocks and lifestylers for using productive land on a small scale but small-block

from producing cider vinegar as an animal tonic. While there are some good opportunities to make a return on a lifestyle block investment, careful thought is needed, as growing redtape concerns surround future food production. Something as simple as making fruit jam may require a big investment in a commercial kitchen. There’s also the question of business having to be GST conversant. An accountant’s advice should be sought.

owners can do every bit as much to safeguard the health of the land as their commercial neighbours. While avocados are looking good, honey is also going through a boom time. The business of beekeeping can be a complex one but there has been growth in home gardeners and lifestyle block owners being able to rent beehives which are managed by the beekeeper. Rentals can start around $300 a hive, and in return, you have pollination for plants right on site, as well as getting a quantity of honey for your larder, produced from your own property. Ten kilos of honey is pretty much a standard return. Another choice of moneymakers might be chickens for egg production or maybe livestock. Free-range eggs carry a premium and are readily sold at farmers markets or just at the gate. But income ideas abound. One lifestyler couple bought a small apple orchard and made an income

When farmers prosper, all of Northland benefits

25

by John Blackwell

Some of my friends (and my wife) have asked why on earth I would take on the role of Federated Farmers Northland Province President. The fact is I enjoy sailing into uncharted waters, and this job is right up my alley. I firmly believe that farmers need a national voice to make progress on important rural issues, and I want to be part of that. My farming family ties in New Zealand stretch back more than 150 years, working the same piece of land in South Auckland that my great grandfather bought in 1866. I farm in Kaipara and have been here all my life running sheep and beef. Many other locals will know me from the Beef + Lamb Farmers Council, which I chaired for some years. I also served for 13 years on the Ruawai College Board of Trustees, six years as chairman. I had two years on the Kaipara District Council, and four years ago I joined the Northland Field Days committee. I married a Northland girl, Lurline, and we’ve raised three children over the last 21 years. My eldest son Peter is running Blackwell Contract Fencing and tells me he takes the most round wood out of Dargaville. Suze is at Otago University in Dunedin and Kevin is studying

horticulture at Whangarei Polytechnic. I want to drive a new era for Northland Federated Farmers. Just as we need a strong and united voice nationally, that has to be underpinned by a robust provincial set up that serves local members’ needs. We’re the backbone of New Zealand’s export economy, but farmers are in the low single figures as a percentage of the population, which translates as having less sway in our democratic system. I see the wave of new rules and regulations coming through at an ever-increasing rate, forced onto the landowners, often by people who have no skin in the game. The work that Federated Farmers is doing often goes under the radar, but is nevertheless vital. Many rules are brought out by councils which are not practical or achievable. This year, Federated Farmers submitted on every annual plan in the Northland region, and on several plan changes and bylaws affecting farmers. This includes the recent controversial Landscapes Plan Change in Whangarei, which will restrict how farmland classified as an

John Blackwell

‘outstanding natural landscape’ is used. The Far North District Council has just completed its three-year revaluation of properties, with farm values showing an average increase of over 11 per cent. Hopefully any rates hikes won’t match the huge increase many Whangarei farmers suffered this year. I strongly encourage any Far North farmer who disputes the revaluation of their land to lodge an appeal with Quotable Value by December 2.

By running the largest policy team outside of government in New Zealand, Federated Farmers has made a huge impact, working with every local authority in the nation. We can share best practice around our provinces and make a real difference. I’m happy to talk to anyone about the work of Federated Farmers, especially with anyone considering becoming a member. It is pleasing to see that this problem, of inferior phosphate being dumped on the NZ market to farmers who put a lot of trust in these majority stakeholders, is being aired publicly at last. Printed in a leading fertiliser company newsletter September 2015, I quote, ‘Clover King Sechura contains high quality sechura rock from Peru… Our new phosphate rock fertiliser can be expected to outperform similar products on an equal kilogram of phosphate applied basis.’ Although later in the piece, the writer admits the product doesn’t come up to standard, I felt the article was misleading and not only degrading to quality RPR, but also degrading to the name Sechura. It is horrifying to expect farmers to now buy some second-grade fertiliser just because these guys haven’t got the real McCoy.

Rock (RPR) procured by standard for RPR is natural, and a North Island based gradually releases fertiliser company in RPR which is in the soil at a near June 2016, tested mined in Peru neutral pH which soil 12.495% phosphate, biology can handle, 6.4pH, 71% calcium and is an alternative carbonate, citric source of phosphate solubility of 47% and allowable for organic includes a range of farmers. As it contains calcium, it does trace elements. Where phosphate is required as an not have an acidifying effect on the soil. The standard set by the NZ Fertiliser input into a fertiliser programme, there is arguably no other product on the market in NZ that can touch Sechura RPR for quality and proven results over a long period of time. th I applaud Fertmark for standing its ground and not compromising the standards and integrity of our fertiliser products in NZ. In these situations it can be an easy move to be persuaded to lower the bar. Smaller fertiliser companies who specialise in custom blends can get the best quality RPR. I would urge farmers to shop around for quality if they are to expect the best response for money spent. If you are looking for Sechura RPR (the real stuff), ask uncle Google. He has all the answers.

Nanotechnology physical chemistry v chemical chemistry New product CARBON-Plus and growing technology here now in New Zealand for all growers — commercial and home gardeners. Ever wondered why after years of applying chemical fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides to your crops and soils, yields are on the decline and so is crop quality. The work completed by Dr Huber (soils advisor to the White House) on glyphosate shows the mechanism by which this occurs, basically the glyphosate chelates some of the key trace elements in the soil like manganese, zinc, copper and iron. This is then further complicated with GMO Roundup ready crops where additional applications of this herbicide during the growing cycle rendering more soil mineral availability issues. The real issue with growing crops is focussing on the process called photosynthesis. If as a grower we focus on how we maximise this, then we can make leaps and bounds toward increasing crop yields and quality. This is just common sense but is overlooked with the universities and major fertiliser suppliers. So the real issue is trying to get enough CO2 into the plant from day one and that’s where the new nanotechnology comes into play. A covalent bonded product with Carbon Dioxide (CO2),

Water (H2O) and Nitrogen (N) particle sizes that small are measured as picometres. Most foliar fertilisers supplied today contain particles so large that will take years for them to breakdown to be able to enter the plant and contribute to yield. North Carolina State University said ‘You are right water and carbon dioxide being fundamental and NPK being secondary’. So what is the impact on a plant exposed to three times the normal CO2 in its growing atmosphere in 35 days? A trial was conducted with growing cowpeas and this was the outcome: stem length 52% increase, stem weight 21% increase, root length 339% increase, leaf number 38% increase, and leaf weight 9% increase. When plants are sprayed at a very young age or at the beginning of their yearly production cycle, the chlorophyll density is increased significantly. On trials conducted by our supplier there were significant crop yield increases: • Soybeans 800kg/acre on a dry season and 100kg/acre on a normal season

• Rice in Asia 1,300kg/acre in an excessively dry season • Corn yield increases of 300– 800kg/acre • Tomatoes, peppers, squash, watermelons, tobacco, etc all had significant yield increases Monsanto past employee Jerry Pritchard proclaimed ‘You have discovered the “missing link” that we have been searching for for 40 years. Of agriculture translocation, your product helps plant nutrient availability by fracturing and mobilisation of tied up plant nutrients.’ This product has been endorsed and trialled by the late Dr Dan Skow from international Ag Labs and in their trials showed yield increases, but nutrient density was enhanced: manganese 190%, iron 41%, boron 38%, copper 71% and zinc 134%.

So this product being natural but being developed out of the new world, of nanotechnology is incredibly cost effective. Selling at approximately $50–60/L and being applied at 100–200ml/ha three to four times during the life cycle of a plant will only cost approximately $6–12/ha per application (excluding application costs), so four applications a year will cost approximately $24–50/ ha per year. A number of trials are already underway in NZ, and are showing huge promise. Anyone interested in this new nanotechnology and wishing to increase yields and lower product cost, phone us here at Environmental Fertilisers Ltd, 07 867 6737 or send an email to grant@ ef.net.nz, so we can tailor design a growing programme for you.

RURAL WHEELS

Busting the two party system by Andy Bryenton

Down here in New Zealand and Australia, it’s always been a two-horse race in the world of big V8 four-door tourers. Folks nail their colours to the mast at an early age, declaring for Ford or Holden and often defending their choice loudly and with malicious use of Bathurst victory statistics in the nation’s bar-rooms. But there’s a third big automaker in the US, and they’re poised to fill the niche left behind as the classic Commodore and the iconic Falcon leave the spotlight.

Sure, the likes of Mustang and Camaro stir the blood, but there is a special place in New Zealand motoring for a big, four-door, comfy, growling V8 touring car. One that’s not German, or indeed Japanese, considering options way back to the Lexus LS400. So, presenting the Chrysler 300 SRT. A hyper-muscular version of the Ralph Gilles designed 300C, which caused such a stir in the early 2000s with its ‘Goodfellas’ good looks and its purring hemi eight, the SRT shares that trio of letters with muscle car royalty. Think Viper, Hellcat and even the monumental Ram pickup truck — and you’re in the ballpark. Not to be outdone, this boosted version of the second generation letter car, packs in 350 kilowatts — that’s 460hp in the old money. Add in space, comfort and the fact that, seen from a certain angle, it has a bit of the Bentley about it, and this looks like a real contender for the vacancy at the top of the four-door V8 table. Now, to be clear, the 300 SRT is not specifically what the Commodore or XR8 were. Those were bold, brash, workingclass heroes made good. The Chrysler

stems from a bloodline that contains a shot of W211 Mercedes, and it brings luxury and an aura of subtle menace to the road. That low roofline, massive rims and the subdued growl of the 6.4 litre eight, hint at knuckle dusters hidden up a tailored suit jacket sleeve. Take it out for a spin, though, and it’s smooth and unruffled, eschewing the tyre-shredding pantomime of the maddest Fords and Holdens downunder. The sound is there, but the fury is tamed by adaptive damping suspension, a

balanced eight-speed box and Brembo performance brakes. The perfect gentleman, then? Well, they did fit the SRT with launch control for a reason. But inside, you’ll find a calm space at the centre of the 350 kilowatt storm — a place that reminds you that there were Valiants on Mount Panorama alongside those Falcons and Commodores. If ever there was time to consider the third party, here it is. You will be pleasantly surprised at what the ‘grandson’ of the mighty Valiant Charger can do!

Clearing scrub the easy way Agriline is the New Zealand distributor for industry-leading Vigolo mulchers, built in Italy with a very strong emphasis on quality. They are excellent for gorse, broom, tree prunings, kikuyu, and general clearing and topping, reducing material so finely it breaks down a lot more quickly, increasing re-growth and retain soil moisture. Mike Hamlin from Agriline has had over 20 years’ experience with mulchers and has specified these machines to suit the New Zealand conditions. There are important points about the Vigolo mulcher that sets it apart from anything else on the market. A large diameter rotor gives the good momentum and makes the mulcher easier to drive in heavy conditions. There is a ‘no flail clash’ feature — the flails cannot hit each other reducing unnecessary wear. A high horsepower rated gearbox ensures a long life while an overrun clutch ensures your driveshaft is as long as possible therefore reducing the angle. Half a century of rotary power by Andy Bryenton

Innovative, high-revving, thirsty and quick — all are words to describe the rotary engine, that tiny internal combustion machine which packs V8 punch in a miniscule space. It’s been 50 years since Felix Wankel invented the rotary in Germany, and that means that 2017 might be the year for the alternative to pistons to really show us what it can do. Not that other rotaries have been shrinking violets, of course. While the engine itself — an inside-out take on regular piston-and-crank combustion where a triangular rotor operates inside an oval housing to create power — may have been a Teutonic invention, it was the Japanese auto giant Mazda who picked it up and ran with it. 2017 also marks 40 years since the advent of their Cosmo rotary car, the first of a dynasty which has grown to include some of the most iconic JDM sports cars of all time. Mazda’s RX series has a string of greatest hits, but most of us will know the latest two — the RX7 and RX8. The venerable 7 came to us in the 80s with a shape similar to the then-cutting-edge Porsche 928 and C4 Corvette, but with a block under the hood that those used to massive displacement struggled to find. Finding the gas pedal, however, unleashed a storm of high-pitched noise, screeds of tyre smoke and revs up in the racing motorbike range. The subsequent ‘Savannah’ and ‘Batmobile’ body redesigns became staunch favourites with the kind of

Then came the RX8, a slightly more sensible rotary with a de facto four-door set-up and a 1.3-litre engine that still outpaced the big fours and sixes of its day. Now, as we approach the double milestone for the rotor, Mazda have caused a stir by showing something wild and sleek at the Tokyo motor

Japanese mag Holiday Auto claims a weight of just 1,300kg for a car packing a 1,600cc, turbo-boosted 400hp rotary. That’s superbike fast — and a fitting continuation of the Wankel legacy.
