Challenges for rural wellbeing by Chris Penk MP (National) Kaipara ki Mahurangi electorate

We hear a lot about mental health these days, and rightly so. We particularly hear about mental health challenges faced by the young, the old, various ethnic communities and other demographic groupings within society. Again, rightly so.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. *Results may vary

However, I want to shine a light on the challenges faced by rural New Zealand when it comes to mental health. While that’s a pretty abstract concept to apply to our nation’s most practical people, it becomes all too real when we think about the different pressures that can arise. Some are specific to rural New Zealand, such as the changing face of the landscape. As government policy turns productive farm and pastoral land into pine forests, it’s not just the land usage that is changed but its people too. Other issues are shared across New Zealand: rural, urban, suburban and coastal places all face the pressures of an increased cost of living as inflation grows, for example. The likely resultant increase in interest rates will likewise affect everyone owing money to the bank, from the largest farms to the smallest apartments and everything in between. The good news is that some help is available, for example, in the form of the Rural Support Trust — but plenty more is needed. Please do

reach out if you’re feeling the pinch, whether that’s to personal contacts or professional providers. We cannot simply focus on the metaphorical ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, however. In 2022 I’d like to see policymakers in Wellington acknowledge that prevention is better than cure. It means allowing some certainty to rural New Zealand. After all, it’s uncertainty that is so stressful for those looking to plan a way ahead for families, communities, businesses and schools. Slowing down the carousel of rules and regulations would be a good start. My rural constituents in the great electorate of Kaipara ki Mahurangi, which includes the vast bulk of North Auckland, have told me this many times. I’ve listened. I hope that the year has been kind to you so far, including the mental health of you and your loved ones. None of us can foresee all that 2022 will bring — the good, bad and ugly. So let’s focus on what we can control and take care out there.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand has appointed seven new duty officers to assist with water-based emergencies. “Our duty officer programme consists of local, regional and national lifeguards who work alongside police and emergency response teams,” says northern chief duty officer Faron Turner. “Our new beach specialists are starting their journey and have been trained to help alongside emergency services. They are senior members of the Search and Rescue Services who can be tasked to support lifeguards responding to major incidents. “They are a crucial part of our team and ensure that all 18 clubs have this resource available in their local area. The officers help and oversee calls from police, fire and ambulance and Maritime NZ with waterbased incidents across New Zealand. “Our two Northland officers are Ben McKernan from Ruakākā and Baylys Beach and Akesa Waitai-Ifopo from the Far North. They can attend any incident they are near if they are willing and able to respond. “Using locals is important as they know the local areas better than anyone else both subject-wise and geographically for waves conditions, life conditions and access points, which emergency services can’t always find easily on a map.” Coastguard NZ is also an important part of ocean safety. Every skipper has both a legal and moral responsibility for everyone aboard.

checks and basic maintenance, such as replacing old fuel, can make all the difference to the outcome on the water. Make sure your boat has a working VHF radio and VHF call sign and check Coastguard has your correct details. A VHF call sign is a unique identifier that holds key information about your vessel and emergency contact. The call sign is used in an emergency and with Coastguard radio when logging a trip report or bar crossing.

It is a great way to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. That information, along with the number of people on-board, means that in the event Coastguard needs to search for you, the search area is dramatically reduced, and they can find you that bit quicker. To obtain a VHF call sign, to check or update your details, or for more information go to coastguard.nz.

Kaiwaka shearer Toa Henderson was one of several shearers from Northland who placed well at the recent Rotorua Agrodome Shears competition.

T

oa has been honing his skills since returning to the competitive circuit when he returned home from Australia in 2017. “My grandfather and father were shearers, and I went into it straight into it as a career from school because I really enjoy everything about it,” says Toa.

“Being the youngest in the family, I was the keenest to follow in dad’s footsteps and am the only one left doing it. “When I lived in Australia, I was helping my dad with his business. I returned to New Zealand nearly five years ago because I felt it was time to come home to my mum’s family here in Kaiwaka. “I have a shearing run encompassing Kaiwaka, Wellsford, Ruawai and beyond with my team of shearers, rousies and a presser. “I like to encourage people that want to get into shearing to go for it. After a few years of bending over sheep all day, you can lose motivation, but I really enjoy it. “We don’t have as many shearers in the country now due to the reduction in the amount of sheep farms.

COVID-19 variant Omicron is circulating in Northland

Shearing keeps sheep cool in the warmer months and reduces the risk of fly strike

“It is sad as there is not much happening with the price of wool. It is expensive to get

sheep shorn, so farmers now look more at breeds that don’t need shearing.

What’s your woodlot worth?

According to the latest government modelling, there could be 9,000 to 16,000 Covid-19 cases a month at the peak of an Omicron outbreak in the Northland District Health Board region. In the community we will have about 400 to 500 cases per day at a peak in late March/early April. There could be 350 to 720 needing hospital treatment each month. Ten to 15 of them, mostly unvaccinated, would need ICU care. Vaccination remains our most effective weapon against the virus so get vaccinated and get boosted. It’s not too late. February is a critical month to get New Zealand boosted. Two shots were great protection against Delta, but boosters are the best way to fight Omicron. That’s why everyone who can, needs to get boosted in February. Boosters help slow the spread of the virus, so more of us can stay well. And that helps free up our hospitals for other people who need care. If you had your 2nd vaccination at least 3 months ago and you’re 18 and over, get your booster ASAP. Book your vaccination now at: www.bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz

over — that’s not good either. It feels good after you finish a mob. “Down south, the country is very hilly, so there will always be sheep, meaning the career isn’t going to go away.” Toa, along with local friends Tama Nahona and Dane Phillips from Kaiwaka, Whangarei’s Destiny Paikea and Jayden Mainland from Wellsford, claimed ribbons and wins at the Rotorua event. Toa took out the open shearing final and Tama, the senior title. “Dane took fourth place in the open final, and Jayden came runner-up to Tama in a close senior final. Destiny was runnerup in the senior woolhandling final. ”We went because I competed in 11 open finals last season, from Kaikohe to

Gore and realised there may not be many other opportunities this summer. “We had 36 of the season’s 59 scheduled competitions cancelled, and more may follow due to Covid restrictions. “Rotorua was a close destination for us to travel to, and it was well worth the effort of getting there. It was a close competition. Competing is also a great way to learn from watching the older competitors work as well.” Toa has now won eight open finals since his return from Australia. “At the Rotorua competition Digger Balme from King Country and myself each shore the 20-sheep final in 17min 29sec.” Toa had the better-quality points, including conceding just 16 penalty

marks on the shearing board. He took the win by 4.55 points from Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan and Digger. “Tama shore the 12-sheep senior final in 14 minutes, beating Jayden by three seconds and just 0.317 points. Destiny did great, too, in her section. “I really enjoy competing, especially as I am getting more experienced at it and understanding what to do in the finals. It comes down to practise — the more you do it, the better you get at it. “The other guys were really happy with their wins too. There are some good shearers competing, and you are able to learn by watching them. It is a great lifestyle, and I will carry on competing with the goal to compete in the Golden Shears.”

“The price of meat is good though, and that helps — hopefully, the price of wool picks up soon, which will help. “I travel across the country with my job, and every week I am somewhere different. “Generally, the sheep are in the yards before we get to the shed. They come in with wool on and go out with wool off. The wool is placed in bails and sent away or stored. It sounds easy, but it is a big job.” Shearing keeps the animals cool. It is unhealthy having wool in the hot weather as they get fly struck. “The lambs grow better and can get around the paddock a lot easier when they are shorn. In winter, if the wool gets heavy and they get wet and fall over, they can’t get up. If they are in mud and roll

CREATING THEIR

DREAMS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Amanda Wilson and Tim Sloss have turned their three-year-old son Cooper’s desire to dress like his dad on the farm into a reality.

“I

grew up in Southland on a sheep and deer farm that was in my family for 64 years. Tim grew up on a North Canterbury sheep farm,” says Amanda. “When I met Tim, he was dairy farming, and we later decided to go contract milking. We have 800 dairy cows and also lease a sheep farm running 2,000 stock units, some of which are calves we are rearing and the rest being sheep. “Cooper is quite a farm boy and wants to dress like his dad, and I was struggling to find quality clothing for him. He was going up in sizes rapidly, so I decided to make my own as there was nothing really around for children in moleskin pants. “Then, I thought other children may like to dress like dad too in moleskins, nice shirts and workwear. I worked alongside a manufacturer on my designs and made a massive plunge for a bulk order.” Amanda called her range Dusty Shepherd Clothing.

“There are multiple reasons I came up with Dusty Shepherd. The shepherd is what sheep farmers are called worldwide, and I wanted to represent all farmers in New Zealand. We are farmers caring for the land and animals. “Dusty to me represents dusty days, dusty yards, hard-working and tired farmers. For youth, it could be the day after a big night and they feel pretty dusty. “The dog is in my logo because he is your loyal working companion that helps with the day-to-day jobs. “The clothes are timeless pieces, made to be hard-wearing, using good-quality cotton so you can pass along to other children. Cotton makes the clothes good for both summer and winter. “Cooper is fair-skinned, and I know he won’t get sunburnt or overheat in his work shirts as the material breathes and the long sleeves protect him.

Cooper still uses the crooks Amanda’s grandfather made from mānuka especially for the photo shoot to add character

“The moleskin pants are unisex and look just like dad’s. They have a hidden elastic to tighten the waist if you need and they look tidy for special occasions.

Girls love them too, especially for horse riding.” Amanda added a frill on the shirt bodice and cuffs for girls.

Amanda says her designs make working on the farm a whole lot more fun for everyone Cooper and other farming children are enjoying being able to dress like their mum or dad on-farm

“The girl’s shirt turned out really pretty, and I loved it so much I made one for myself. I used a gingham print for girl’s shirts and dresses as it is timeless. They are really popular. “I found beautiful colours for my classic rugby jersey. Made from 100 per cent cotton, they have the classic white collar and rubber buttons. I added an Italian leather belt with a solid brass buckle for children to create the finishing touch to their outfit. “I think my range makes the day on the farm that much more fun. I had the help of two outstanding photographers, Rory Hamilton from HC Photography and

Kerri Back Photography. I am so grateful to them as I couldn’t capture my vision as they have. “My grandad made the shepherd crooks for my photos out of mānuka, and the shepherd’s whistles came from a lady who sells them on behalf of her father. Cooper is really getting the knack of using his whistle. “It is so nice to use so many New Zealand people to help get my idea off the ground. Tim is my main supporter and thinks it is awesome Cooper dresses like dad. Every day Cooper requests to wear his Dusty Shepherd clothing.

“My favourite thing about creating my brand is that the children look so smart in their clothes. “I have a wee sleepout I work from, and I am so pleased I took the risk. It is still hard as I rely on social media to get it out there because we live rurally. I am always grateful when people share photos of their family in my designs on my Dusty Shepherd Clothing Facebook page.

A premature entry

by Ann van Engelen

Emma Kirkman and her husband Jim Chambers are thankful for the service they received from the Northland Rescue Helicopter when their daughter Bonne was born prematurely. Emma was three months away from her due pregnancy date with Bonne when she attended a routine appointment with her midwife, and things escalated. She had not been feeling well but put it down to normality, given it was her first pregnancy. “Age 41 and my first time at the rodeo,” says Emma. “I was admitted to Whangārei Hospital, and on the advice of a doctor, we made a mercy dash to Auckland Hospital. “Bonne had stopped growing and moving, and my blood pressure was through the roof. It was unmanageable, and medical professionals had grave concerns about our welfare. “Two days later, an emergency caesarean section was performed. There was only an eight per cent chance of a live birth because Bonne was more than two months premature at 29 weeks.

“She arrived amidst a measles epidemic, weighing less than two pounds of butter at 970 grams. Because of the criticality of the situation, I was unable to cuddle her, but the reality was that I was too unwell to anyway.” In weeks to come, Bonne got up to eight hours a day lying skin-to-skin on Emma and Jim’s chests, known as Kangaroo Care. “As a result, she has formed an amazing bond and become a feisty livewire of a child despite being half the size of children the same age. “The birth was not the romantic movie experience where they place the baby on your chest for your first cuddle. What followed was an 87-day hospital journey for our family. “Bonne stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Auckland for 22 days and was

Bonne is now two years old, and her parents say they will never forget the help they received from the rescue chopper service

transferred by helicopter from Auckland NICU to Whangārei Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit. “She remained for a further 64 days before being discharged on December 19, 2019 — day 87 of the NICU/ SCBU journey. That transfer back to Whangārei was courtesy of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. “The care I received from the medical teams was superb throughout, and I was stoked that one of my favourite nurses was the one to fly with us to Whangārei. “Ronald McDonald House had also been amazing in the way they supported Jim. He had to keep our business ventures ticking along, with a dairy farm and beef run-off in the mix providing additional challenges.

“As for the Northland Rescue Chopper experience. I wonder what would have happened if I had not been given the care and kindness. I look back on it with gratitude. “Without the chopper, it would have meant that we could not have come home to our home town, and Jim had been under immense pressure being away from the businesses. “It was my first helicopter ride, and I often wonder what would happen to women and babies in need of critical care. They would die without the service. “It is something we just have to support because it is there for us all 365 days of the year, every hour of the day and night. It is such a life-saver.” To support the rescue chopper go to nest.org.nz.

A COUNTRY THEME BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Shane and Angela Wright, along with their son Kieran have established a special area on their property to create a garden of native and older style plants and flowers.

“S

hane was brought up on a farm and ended up being a shepherd for many years, but he always wanted to build,” says Angela. “We relocated to the Hamilton area around 20 years ago so he could follow his dream. I work for a government department and am lucky to work from home now. As I have a food and gardening interest, Shane built me a room outside the house for my hobby.”

Angela is partial to sweet things and constantly comes up with recipes and ideas. “I used to make cakes and treats for people, but I never do things in half measure, and it took up too much time, and I had to stop. I now focus on gardening and have managed to get flowers blooming for the last couple of years. “I discovered dahlias growing last year after purchasing a couple of plants from Palmers Garden Centre. I discovered there are more types of tubers than I realised and now have a collection of more than 100. “I had to research how to look after them, and they are flowering well. I think

Pruning, watering and fertilising are the key factors Angela believes help encourage a successful garden

my raised garden has a lot to do with my success as they are free draining. I think some are more susceptible to rot, as I had a couple rot. “A friend told me they put urea on their dahlias, so I do that fortnightly along with tomato fertiliser, and I stake them well too.”

The country-themed garden also has a many of other older-style flowers such as hydrangea

Angela Wright discovered the joy of growing dahlias early last year and has since grown her selection to more than 100 plants

“Hydrangeas have many colour choices and are easy to grow. You don’t have to do too much for them to survive. I fertilise and water them and give them a good prune after they bloom. “Most people think they are old fashioned, but they actually are beautiful. I love how you can get purples, whites, and pinks now — years ago, they were just blue. “It is the same with dahlias being an older flower. I used to laugh when we saw people placing umbrellas over them to protect them from wilting, but now I find I do similar. If you compete in shows, you need to stop the rain and the heat from wilting them. “The other reason I grow flowers is because they are so encouraging for people.

I love giving homegrown bouquets to people for birthdays or to cheer them up and bring a little bit of sunshine to their day. “Making up your own arrangement is always fun. I think that is why I started making my own cakes as well. It is so nice being able to design and decorate them for each individual person. “My secret to a good garden is fertiliser, watering and pruning. You have to be prepared to put the time in and effort with love. In summer, I can spend an hour out there amongst my plants watering the garden. “People are often shocked when they walk past our garage and into our garden. It suddenly hits you, and the amount of bird life is amazing. We have all sorts

of birdlife, including tui, grey warbler and rosella. “We planted cherry blossoms in the middle of my dahlia garden to attract more tui. Our son Kieran is into native plants, so we have a lot of native ferns, trees and bonsai. One bonsai is a pine, and one is a Japanese miniature maple that is 40 years old, and we have another from my dad. “My father was into plants, and it has obviously continued on through Kieran. He has an incredible amount of house plants alongside his native garden and grasses with kōwhai, punga, kawakawa and much more. “Having such a beautiful garden is lovely. You can go outside and sit among the different plants all year round. We have created a beautiful sanctuary and I am looking forward to sharing my tubers with people.”

Mike Frederickson, Milk Bar sales manager

“Our controlled flow system boosts immunity and digestive health so calves can grow and thrive. This makes us happy. “We are still a family company. Our daughter Anna is based in the UK and manages the global network, our other daughter Kate looks after the New Zealand office, and our son Callum gets new products ready for production. “We have a remarkable team of people around us; our Waipu crew have been with us for years. “We like to get on-farm, and most farmers will have come across Brian Whyte, who is a passionate advocate for animal health. “Mike Frederickson, our New Zealand sales manager, joined us last year. He is also from a farming family and understands the industry and farm needs well. “We are supposed to be retiring, but there will be more products coming out in the near future as Diane and I love the challenge to develop new products. It is extremely rewarding when we hear the good results farmers are getting. “While we are disappointed the Northland Field Days aren’t going ahead, we wish everyone well, and we will still be holding our field days specials.” Give us a call on 0800 104 119 or go to milkbar.co.nz to learn more.

Ross and Diane McInnes were farming in Maromaku through the 70s and 80s and needed a way to feed their calves more efficiently than what was available at the time. “We were dairy farming in Maramaku and designed some gravity feeders for our own use,” says Ross. “In 1989, we went to the Mystery Creek Fieldays® to share what we had made and discovered our idea was wanted by other people as well. We started making the Milk Bar 5 and an over the fence mobile feeder in our shed at night. “In 1991 we decided to go into full-time manufacturing of our slightly extended product range. Everything we do is guided by animal health — first calves, and now lambs and kids. “We have dedicated our lives to understanding how the infant ruminant’s digestive system works and what we can do to help it thrive in an artificial environment. “The milk flow is crucial to calves, lambs and kids. Too fast, and they have poor performance with scours and cross suckling, too slow, and they won’t drink. “We want to add value to farms. In our hearts, we are still farmers and are not interested in making something that doesn’t improve the health of calves or that isn’t easy to use in the middle of spring.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Ron Manderson Real Estate With a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree, Ron is arguably one of the most experienced and qualified agents by the range of tasks involved in the industry. “When I started farming, I doubled previous record production in just four years and was persuaded to leave the farm and understudy to the Allied Farmers managing director,” says Ron. “This involved monthly financial control of 50 farms per year for three years and 80 farms under the Sheep Farmers Supplementary Finance Scheme throughout Northland, plus my own properties. “Executives of major companies I met during this period persuaded my shift to Auckland, to office, commercial and industrial property, initially in Fletchers commercial property head office. “On my own account, I undertook investigations for Yates Corporation, joint ventures in horticulture, and then company defence matters when Yates was raided. “I was involved in subsequent negotiations with Elders Australia, which led to 46 building sales that year. “Another year, a multi-storey officeretail building was sold to a Singaporean. A client suggested my involvement, that led to land development and 80 homes being constructed. “I was able to build relationships with two major South Asian Companies with the founders’ adult children as a shareholder and clients. These experiences opened many doors and contacts.”

Due to illness, Ron returned to Kaipara, and three farms, as a group, came to his attention just four days before a major real estate company’s tenders closed. “I made three phone calls, and sold all the farms to one client, acting as a buyer’s agent.” It was subsequently contested, as they had a sole agency. However, Ron was found to have acted ethically, correctly and commendably, while numerous deficiencies were found in the sole agent’s position. “Bill Guest of Farmers of New Zealand, before he died, asked me to design an agency ‘by farmers for farmers’. “In a trial of $10 million of farms, an average of $300,000 more per farm was achieved with 60 per cent dominance in that market sector by Ron versus GVs. “This agency featured recent developments in real estate and on the internet. Industry change is happening and leads to specialisation of agency in Master Agency Realty Limited superior results.” With more than 300 transactions onshore, offshore, in other provinces and the South Island, and now with rare remission from a cancer against the odds, Ron specialises mostly in larger Northland properties for clients.

Dry weather need not delay pasture For new pasture, you can be proud of, even if it feels too dry to think about it right now, consider sowing seed before it rains, instead of waiting for the autumn weather to smile on you. Research shows ryegrass seed sown early in dry autumn conditions germinates well after weeks with no rain, says Barenbrug pasture systems manager Blair Cotching. “It can also grow more feed per hectare than seed sown later, and will probably persist longer too, giving you a better result all round.” Plus, you’ll beat the rush for contractors when the rain does come, he says. Yes, you can! “We’ve been asked so many times if it’s OK to sow seed in the dry. We did a trial to confirm the answer.” In hot Waikato peat during an autumn drought, Barenbrug agronomists sowed perennial ryegrass seed with NEA2 endophyte in late February, March and April. The earliest sowing had it the hardest; the soil reached more than 49 degrees Celsius at seed depth (two centimetres), with no rain for 43 days. Even so, this February-sown seed went on to grow two tonnes of dry matter a hectare more than seed sown post-rain in April, and the endophyte was fine, Blair says.  Ready to grow Ryegrass seed sown after March 1 and before the rain is poised for growth

Ryegrass seed sown early in dry autumns conditions germinates well after weeks with no rain, research confirms Blair Cotching, Barenbrug

as soon as conditions are right. If seed is still in the bag, when the weather breaks, it can’t grow. By then, everyone else wants to do the same thing, so contractors are flat out, and delays are inevitable, especially the way things are now. However — there’s more. Moreover, because it starts growing as soon as it has enough moisture, seed

Willow-Jean Prime MP for Northland

sown early becomes new pasture that is ready for its first grazing sooner than if you wait and sow after the rain. Why does this matter? “That first grazing has a massive impact on your pasture establishment,” Blair says. “It helps the young ryegrass plants grow denser and stronger before winter when wet soils and heavy cows can damage pasture. And it gets the clover off to a good start.” As an added bonus, clover seed likes early sowing, too, because the soil is warmer.

 First up, best dressed The benefits of sowing early don’t stop in the paddock. If this technique suits your farm and your soils, it will also help you get organised ahead of time. That means no rushing around at the last minute trying to get hold of seed and a lot more peace of mind knowing you’re as ready as you can be for one of the most important jobs of autumn. What next? Export avocado ‘Pool 1’results announced Results for Just Avocados’ export ‘Pool 1’ for the 2021–22 season have been announced with an average orchard gate return across premium sizes of $10.10 a tray. Jacob Darling, general manager sales and marketing, says that the season has been a challenging one with noticeable value decline in all markets. Australia has been a continued challenge. Values have remained low for the duration of the season. Although we are seeing a slight lift in the final weeks of the season, especially on small fruit, this is only a slight increase when considering the trading environment to date. The silver lining for this season is that we have hit most of our growth aspirations and should finish the season with 370,000 trays being sent to Asia — 30,000 short of the total industry’s volume in the 2020–21 season. “Our challenges came both from a grower perspective and a packing and marketing perspective. We appreciate the support that Just Avocados growers have shown as we have collectively navigated our way through the season.” Looking ahead, the Just Avocados packhouse is undertaking a major

refit in early 2022. That will include Darling Group acquiring a new packing machine in time for the 22–23 Season. The new machine should see our teams further develop our harvest and processing capacity in line with market requirements. It will be key in delivering on our capacity plan, which is critical when delivering the market plan. As we start planning for next season, we are reviewing the crop that has currently been set. Our collective observations are that the total production on an average mature orchard will likely be down 15% to 20% v this season, except for significant production coming on for young orchards. Early market signs suggest a more prosperous season for 2022–23, and we look forward to discussing our wider orchard harvest and marketing plan as we get closer to the commencement of the season. If you’d like to speak to anyone from the Just Avocados team, get in touch with us at info@justavocados.co.nz.

AG CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS Mangawhai’s first lady by Liz Clark

During the 1850s Captain William Moir built a home that would become the crucible of an iconic pub hosting Kiwi rock legends. From its inception back in 1859, the Mangawhai Tavern has been a focal point for much of the Mangawhai community. It began life as the Mangawhai Hotel after Moir sold it to fellow military settler Samuel Mooney. Mooney obtained a provisional hotel licence from the government of the day. He announced by an advertisement that ‘he will open the spacious premises lately occupied by Mr Moir, as a hotel and general store’. Samuel and his wife Elizabeth soon had a comfortable place for travellers to stay and a venue for the community to gather. The first farmer’s society for the area was formed there, amidst celebrations for Queen Victoria’s birthday. During 1863, the hotel became a stopover for the Albertland settlers who had arrived from Auckland. They came with the promise of a new start and land

grants under the 40-acre system. Many, upon arrival at their final destination point, turned around and went back to Auckland. Some, however, took up the challenge and built the communities residents of eastern Kaipara now call home to this day. By the end of 1867, Mooney sold the hotel to Captain Judd of the cutter Miranda. Judd transformed the humble building from a kauri slab single storey structure into a double-storey, multiroom hotel with a bar and sitting room. His tenure was short, lasting a mere six months before Judd returned to his former life as a coastal trader. The hotel had its first death in January 1870 when Thomas Hart was found deceased on the premises. The publican by then was Mrs Annie Mairs. William Moir returned to the site of his former home in 1873. He remained as the owner and licensee until March

Even during the 1940s, the Mangawhai Tavern was a stopover for all types of travellers heading north

1875, when it was taken over by Pearson Wilson. In 1881, with a new wharf under construction and future steamer service planned, Wilson extended the hotel to include an additional 12 rooms. He sold out to Mr Ratgen for a considerable sum in October 1882. In 1884, the licensing district came under the control of the Albertlanders. They voted for temperance, and the hotel was denied a new licence. Despite the attempts to keep the hotel dry, Ratjen got around the anti-liquor

establishment by applying instead for a club licence. After Ratjen’s tenure, the hotel had a multitude of various owners and licensees until March 1890 when a fire broke out in the kitchen resulting in the building’s destruction. Using the insurance payout covering the building, its owners commissioned prominent Auckland-based architect Charles Le Neve Arnold to design the present building. It was completed in the same year.

their jobs are unlikely to be out of work for long, but if they can take a seven-month break between jobs, that might change. “There will also be administrative costs, including to make sure the scheme isn’t rorted. “Federated Farmers would prefer to see further central government efforts to attract and upskill those looking for work to fill the wide range of vacancies in the primary and other key sectors.”

“It seems strange to say the least to advance this costly scheme, especially at such a time,” said Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard. “With the nation on the cusp of an expected Omicron surge, that will be a stressful period for many who will be impacted by this scheme. It is hardly the right time to be consulting on such a contentious piece of legislation.” The federation strongly believes consultation on key issues should only be occurring when the country is in the orange setting. “The pandemic has been massively disruptive and stressful for many employers, and the next three months are expected to be very intense. “The government should recognise that people’s wellbeing, and good process, are more important than legislative timeframes to clear the books of anything contentious before election year.” Under the proposed scheme, a person who loses their job will be given payments worth 80 per cent of their former income capped at salaries of $130,911 for up to seven months after they lose their job. “The government thinks it will smooth the transition in and out of unemployment and help people survive periods of unemployment.

New power source a renewable hit by Andy Bryenton

One of the most contentious gases in agriculture is being harnessed for good as New Holland rolls out a methane-powered tractor, scooping the prestigious 2022 Sustainable Tractor of the Year Award. The T6 Methane Power is the world’s first methane-powered tractor, using the gas in the same way some cars utilise LPG. Methane has come to the fore of climate change arguments, as farmers contend that methane produced by ruminant animals is locked in a cycle and does not contribute to greenhouse gas levels in the same way as its industrial equivalent. Using the gas, which can be sourced from biodigesters or even from animal waste on the farm, is a way to create a sustainable circular economy of energy. Cue the research team at New Holland, which developed the large and capable T6 variant tractor that has been awarded Sustainable Tractor of the Year by an international panel. Engineered at the company’s plant in Basildon, England, the T6 Methane Power performs the best trick a new, alternative-energy vehicle can; it runs and feels just like the original. “We are all very satisfied with this 25th edition of Tractor of the Year,” said Fabio Zammaretti, president of the awards committee. “The level of tractors competing grows constantly, and it was a very tight race. The jury this year, once again, did an extraordinary job in evaluating

“The level of tractors competing grows constantly, and it was a very tight race.” all the tractors competing for the four awards. “Our mission is to make the most of the technologies offered by tractors, without forgetting that sustainability plays a fundamental role in our industry.” In this case, that sustainability comes with cost savings as well. The New Holland T6 Methane Power boasts the same power output and utility as a similar-sized diesel tractor but costs 30% less to run. It’s a serendipitous case of ecological and fiscal interests aligning for better farming. The first prototypes of New Holland’s methane technology rolled out in 2013, and now the system has come to fruition with both awards recognition and practical deployment to working farms. In the future, New Holland sees this technology as forming part of a self-contained cycle and even for biomethane fuels to contribute to road transport energy loading.

The New Holland methane-powered T6 may be the future of sustainable farming

Rural roading upgrades

Upgrades to numerous unsealed Northland roads are well underway, with a substantial amount of work to be completed by the end of June. For the next few months, dozens of projects around the region will be undertaken with more than 40 key roads prioritised for upgrades for the benefit of residents in the Far North, Kaipara and Whangārei Districts. Northland Transportation Alliance general manager Calvin Thomas says with nearly 60 per cent of Northland roads being unsealed — upgrades will be spread across many years. “Our teams have prioritised those roads most in need of maintenance, and a lot of work is underway with crews all around Northland right now, which is pleasing,” he says. “Many high-volume tourist routes and roads renowned for dust over summer are being targeted, and NTA is asking that motorists be mindful of the safety of roadside workers. “Due to the increasingly dry conditions, it is unlikely that much grader activity will be undertaken. “There has been a lot of research undertaken the past couple of years around the best ways to maintain and upgrade unsealed roads. It is clear that the use of graders and spreading metal for the sake of it, the salt and pepper approach, is not the answer to better roads. “We need to keep getting the base structure and shape of our roads right to make them better in the short and

long term. Application of a final gravel layer that has improved cohesive, binding properties is the finishing touch to create more durable, wellbound, unsealed roads that require less grading.

“The reality is we can only get to six to eight per cent of our unsealed roads annually, but by maintaining and upgrading them properly with renewing road surfaces, drainage and culvert work, they will last well for 7–10 years. Over time we will get to all roads in Northland.” In the Far North, 36km of unsealed roads will be improved, including the application of dust suppressant outside up to 160 rural homes, schools and marae. In Kaipara, 45km of unsealed roads are being worked on, while in Whangārei District, up to 25km of unsealed roads are also being improved.

BUSINESS PROFILE

by Andy Bryenton

Keeping local farmers working

As an established name in rural support, with a reputation for keeping farming machinery working hard in all seasons, AgSpares take pride in their knowledge and skills base. Since 1983, when agricultural technology was of a simpler level of sophistication, this family-owned business has been at the forefront of parts supply, slashing back downtime and keeping machinery in the field where it belongs. Part of the ability to do this has been the accumulation of an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the major brands and all the major problems and breakages farmers can face. “Our slogan is ‘keeping tractors in action’, and we mean it,” says sales and marketing manager Tim Baker.

“Our team is probably the most knowledgeable and experienced in the industry. So we ask our customers to put our expertise to the test when they need parts on the farm.” It’s a challenge AgSpares has risen to during those 39 years in the industry, as the business grew and diversified. Today, AgSpares spans New Zealand, Australia and the globe, sourcing new and used tractor parts for farmers, contractors and lifestyle block owners in need. A solid supplier base means a quick turnaround for parts delivery, too. AgSpares has made it easy to get in touch and source parts, with a very well-stocked web store at agspares.co.nz, and a Northland branch at 30 Pipiwai Road, Kamo. Come and visit Tim and the team, and get the peace of mind of an industry-leading three-month warranty on used parts.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Wake up New Zealand

ADVERTORIAL

Cartilage (Part two)

by Colin Hannah — Federated Farmers Northland president

New Zealand is currently throwing away thousands of hectares of productive farmland, often to overseas investments, in a quest to reduce carbon emissions. The government is selling out our country, and it needs to stop now. I know of three dairy farms in Kaipara that have recently been sold, and they will soon be planted in pines. This is one of many examples I have become aware of. Now, I don’t blame the farmers, that is their right to cash in on all their hard work, but large scale forestry planting kills rural communities. We have seen it time and again since the 1980s. That is why I have major concerns with the Emissions Trading Scheme. Dame Anne Salmond recently wrote on the subject, where she outlined (and I quote): “the fundamental problems with this country’s strategy to use pine forests and overseas offsets to help wish away our climate emissions.” I could not agree with her more. Among other things, Dame Ann went on to say: “Worse, as the price of carbon rises, investors are paying very high prices for land to plant pine trees for carbon farming. Since it is cheaper not to trim and harvest the trees, no timber is produced, and there are very few jobs. “Lock up and leave plantations are full of pests and weeds, and the trees are relatively short-lived. As they die, more carbon is

released. As other land uses such as sheep and beef farming are displaced, more jobs are lost and rural communities die. “Socially, culturally, ecologically and economically, carbon farming with pine trees looks like a monumental folly. “As for buying international carbon credits, paying billions to people in other countries to offset the carbon we emit in New Zealand is a fool’s game. Cabinet needs to urgently rethink our carbon strategy.” Federated Farmers Northland has been raising all of these points for some time now. We should be investing in New Zealand and investing wisely. If farms are to be planted, then we should be planting native trees or varieties that can be harvested and be profitable. It is time to wake up.

In theory, osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the simplest diseases. For years, we thought that cartilage in our joints wore away over time. We now know that OA is a complex disease where the processes that reduce cartilage are affected by genetics, past joint trauma and nutrition, especially levels of important antioxidants. Cartilage is very different from other tissue types. It has no nerve or blood supply, and it appears as lifeless tissue. Cartilage is a dynamic tissue. It is a matrix of proteins (collagen and elastin), chondroitin sulphate, water and living cells called chondrocytes. Research shows that the health of chondrocytes is central to the development of OA. Each chondrocyte looks after a small patch of cartilage, repairing damage by secreting new cartilage matrix where needed. The problem is when chondrocytes are damaged or die. It means that the cell can no longer maintain cartilage. Eventually, the cartilage thins — leading to a (painful) bone on bone scenario. One of the most annoying and painful arthritic joints are small hand joints. While Nutritional Therapy can help, these are among the slowest

joints to respond. It seems counterintuitive, but big weight-bearing joints, especially knees, tend to respond faster. I have been helping someone with OA in their base thumb joint at the wrist. Within three months, the pain had reduced. Now, after a year, the discomfort is really minor only when under heavy use. I use a two-pronged approach to supporting cartilage. Firstly, we add compounds, especially chondroitin, that can support and repair cartilage. Secondly, we add curcumin from turmeric and Omega 3 fish oil to reduce inflammation. Often the inflammation causes more pain and mobility loss than the actual cartilage damage. Thirdly, we add the antioxidants that protect chondrocyte cells from further damage. Truck drivers needed

The trucking industry is calling for all hands to the pump as New Zealand faces an indefinite length of time in the red traffic light, which will strain the supply chain.

“We know there are New Zealanders out there with a class two, four or five licence suitable for a heavy vehicle, who are not currently working as truck drivers,” says Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand chief executive Nick Leggett. “We are asking them to consider making themselves available to drive a truck in the weeks and months ahead as we face the wave of Omicron. “Looking across the Tasman to Australia and further afield to the United States and United Kingdom, we know that Omicron can decimate the driver workforce, through both drivers getting the virus and having to isolate because they have been exposed to it. “We are already seeing the anticipation of this disruption to the supply chain. Ironically, the disruption has started prematurely with people panic buying goods and stockpiling. “Thinking ahead, we are appealing to people who have a licence and relevant experience to let us know. We can link you with transport companies in your area to try and fill some of the gaps if and when the supply chain flow becomes critical. “We are an industry that was short of drivers, pre-Covid-19, and that has only intensified as our border has been closed for years, and labour pressures have increased.

FEbRuARY 2022

Nick Leggett, Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand chief executive

“It is estimated that one in four transport companies have vehicles parked up due to driver shortage. Omicron is likely to compound that issue. We might only be talking about a shift or two, but every licence holder who is willing and able to lend a hand will help keep New Zealand’s supply chain running. “It is vital that food and medical supplies continue to move at this time. Someone putting their hand up for a shift could help ensure the deliveries keep rolling.”

Mr Leggett says Transporting New Zealand will be working with the government to ensure anyone on Jobseeker Support who meets the appropriate licence requirements can be made aware they may be needed. Any drivers willing to work through this time can register their interest to Transporting New Zealand via email at admin@transporting.nz. They will be subject to the normal screening, and there are no guarantees of work.

Build the best with X Span You’ve seen the rest — ‘now build the best’ steel sheds. After a lifetime of selling rural real estate, mainly in Northland, and assisting many farmers to buy and sell rural land for a period spanning five decades, Mel Currin decided to hang up his real estate banner and retire. Living in Northland, Mel has a large team of his family strongly involved in the building industry. That included two sons and three grandsons — four of whom are Licensed Building Practitioners. Unable to accept retirement in 2020, Mel purchased the total franchised area of Northland from the Dome Valley to Cape Reinga for what is commonly known as the best steel sheds available — X Span steel sheds. “X Span sheds are 100 per cent built from New Zealand steel and are very quick to assemble,” he says. “Having spent many years on Northland farms, I have seen massive amounts of very expensive equipment and machinery rusting and rotting away at an alarming rate. “We can span up to 27 metres without any inside posts, which is excellent for farmers and contractors who are moving large machinery around inside the shed.” X Span manufactures storage sheds, domestic sheds and garages, heritage

barns, cow-houses, covers, arenas and all types of rural and commercial sheds. Included for consent purposes, each shed, no matter how large or small, comes complete with a pre-engineered design certificate. “Our very own K5S knee bracket (fully BRANZ approved) is the secret to being able to span such long distances. To date, the largest building we have currently under construction is a massive 953 square metres. “Subject to some criteria under the present building consent rules, we can build up to 110sqm on a rural property without a consent. “Commodity prices are currently at exceptional levels. Couple that with favourable interest rates and bank confidence, there hasn’t been a better time to protect your hard-earned assets. “There is no better way to protect these assets long term than to build a strong steel shed that is designed to withstand the elements Mother Nature chooses to send our way for decades to come. “Customers can go onto the Shed Creator on the X Span website xspan. co.nz and create their own design. This program gives you an idea of what the kitset will cost and the ability

Revolutionary tractor project

A driverless tractor able to perform up to three tasks at once is on the cards for New Zealand orchards.

The government is contributing $622,360 through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund to develop a prototype tractor. The Robo Tractor is set to transform the productivity of trellised orchards while reducing carbon emissions. The Smart Machine Company Limited is taking the lead on the three-year project and is contributing a further $945,520. “The tractor will be able to perform several tasks, including canopy spraying, mulching, mowing, trimming and leaf defoliation,” says MPI’s director of investment programmes, Steve Penno. “As well as lowering carbon emissions, we could expect to see reduced spray drift and improved soil and tree health. “By improving orchard productivity sustainably, we could increase the value of crops like apples by meeting the

growing demand for products made with less impact on the environment.” Smart Machine chief executive officer Andrew Kersley says the end goal is to develop a fully electric tractor. “While we want to go fully electric eventually, we need to be sure it will be suitable for remote rural areas. Some orchard tractors run 20 hours a day, seven days a week, so if growers have a fleet that needs frequent recharging, that might not be practical.” With this in mind, Smart Machine is working on a diesel hydraulic system with some electric components, with the view to converting to full electric further down the track. “Smart Machine researchers will adapt the learnings and technology from the successful testing of a tractor they developed for vineyards. This tractor was developed in collaboration with

Pernod, with testing taking place on Pernod vineyards. “The transition to developing an autonomous tractor for orchards isn’t a huge technological leap, as pipfruit growing environments with their 2D canopies are close to the way grapes are grown. “This project aligns with the government’s Fit for a Better World roadmap to boost New Zealand’s recovery from Covid-19. “Developing this low emissions alternative for orchards will help in our goal of shifting to a zero-carbon society, boost sustainability and also has the potential to increase export earnings.” The project is based in Blenheim, with plans to expand testing to Motueka and Hawke’s Bay next year.

NT Engineering offer competitive pricing and pride themselves on fast and efficient service to all of their customers

There’s a change of colours, logos and branding coming to Kaikohe this month, as the town’s Bridgestone Tyre Centre changes its livery to the black and orange of Gas & Tyre. However, the biggest asset the Northland-based tyre and gas supply company has acquired through this strategic expansion is not the building, or even the fleet of mobile units that will soon hit the road in their new colours. It’s the experienced and knowledgeable team who will stay on under the new banner, delivering the service which drivers in the region have come to rely on — “100% Service – anytime, anywhere.” Branch manager Colin Mortensen will continue to build on the eight-year tenure in Kaikohe, leading a team of seven staff as they roll out a new and expanded range of tyre products. Gas & Tyre has built a strong reputation in the mid-north with their support of the agricultural, forestry and roading industries, and they intend to carry on this legacy with their new expansion. At the same time, there will be a wide range of options for passenger vehicles and specialist tyres for off-roaders, including big brands such as Mickey Thompson.

Half of the Gas & Tyre brand involves fuelling kitchens, hot water califonts, central heating systems, and of course, classic Kiwi barbecues. Now, with the addition of a home base in Kaikohe, they will have the rural mid-north covered. Colin and his team will deliver 45kg bottles as far as Ōpononi and across to the borders of the Bay of Islands. If you’re curious as to whether your home or business is covered, they invite you to call up and enquire. Their famous nine-kilogram swap-n-go BBQ bottles will also be available on-site.

The value of cardboard

Grant and Lesley Jacobs are advocates for recycling corrugated cardboard that they turn into animal bedding. “We source clean corrugated cardboard locally from people and businesses in the area and chop it up, and it becomes perfect bedding for animals and birds,” says Lesley. “Grant and I also sell American retro furniture, and he wanted to find a better way to recycle our corrugated cardboard boxes. As a Trade Me buff, he found a machine that chops up cardboard.” Grant and Lesley decided to buy the machine as they were told that most cardboard going to the recycling refuse stations ends up in the landfill. “We discovered people were paying to get their cardboard taken away, and nothing happens to it — it ends up in the dump. Our machine chops it up, and the finished product comes in an 18–20kg bale, ready to use as animal or bird bedding. “The chips absorb smells. It is virtually dust-free, low in bacteria, mould-free and highly biodegradable. Each compacted bale covers an area four to five times the size of the bale. “Chickens love scratching around in the cardboard, and one customer in Christchurch insists it helps stop red mites on his birds. “Once you muck out the used bed, you can place it in your garden or into your worm compost. Grant recently put some around our corn and strawberries after watering the plants. Four days later, the

moisture content under the corn was still high. “The good thing is you don’t have the dry wet dry scenario going on — it maintains the moisture. Places like Mangawhai have lower rainfall, and this helps save water as you don’t have to water the garden daily. “We have brought the American Retro Furniture in from America for 14 years now. It is diner furniture from the 50s and 60s and is original retro commercial quality. “It is quite an experience owning a business nowadays. We have just unpacked a container, which we ordered last June. Our showroom is in Kaiwaka,

next to the liquor shop opposite the Italian Bakery. “The furniture brings back so many memories for people. Almost every New Zealander had someone in the family with retro-styled furniture when they were little if they didn’t have any of their own. “The retro furniture used to get us out and about on the road — we have it all over the country. We love the style and bright colours and the look it achieves for people. “We don’t have standard opening hours and can be found through our Airlyte or American Retro Furniture

Facebook pages. We love being a part of the green machine recycling and are at the Mangawhai Community Market every week with our Airlyte animal bedding. “We are always keen to hear from other people or businesses who need their clean flat-packed corrugated cardboard recycled. The fact we are saving this useful cardboard from going to landfill or being burned is a huge success.”

Northland Regional Council Biosecurity is urging people to tackle perennial invasive moth plant as soon as possible before its kapok-like seed pods mature, then burst and infest new areas. “The plant, which is native to South America, is an issue because it is a tough, fast-growing vine that can rapidly climb and smother native and exotic trees,” says Northland Regional Council’s Biosecurity and Biodiversity Working Party chair Jack Craw. “It grows equally well, creeping over the ground, shading out low vegetation such as regenerating seedlings. Moth plant is one of Northland’s worst weeds. As well as a common pest along roadsides, forest edges and coastal sites, it is also a problem in urban reserves and gardens where it can grow up to 10 metres tall.” The plant has easy to see prolific white flowers about 25mm across that turn into large hanging kapok-type pods. Each pod splits open to release hundreds of seeds with silky threads that are carried by the wind to new sites. “At this time of the year, moth plant vines are often heavy with flower and immature seed pods. It is best to tackle the plant now as it is easy to see before those pods can ripen and burst over the next few months. “If pulled or dug out before the pods mature, it is not necessary to remove the vine or pods from the tree it is climbing

The 2022 Tractor of the Year Awards has been announced, with the highly contested specialised category seeing several new innovations suitable for the orchardist or horticulturalist. While the winner of this year’s supreme award, the low-slung and stable little Reform Metrac is specialised in another direction for alpine pasture management, one of the runners-up displays all the credentials needed by a modern orchard operation, as well as boasting a famous name. The Ferrari Vega 85 Dualsteer shares a moniker with the most famous Italian company of all. Rather than a speedster in red livery, it’s a small and highly manoeuvrable tractor in forest green. The two firms share nothing but a name and a passion for internal combustion innovation, and while one came to fame with road and track velocity, the Vega 85 is more at home at a sedate pace. However, because the red Ferraris of the road are famous for being wide and low, the little 85 would leave them far behind in the narrow confines of an orchard or between rows of vines. That’s because it bends in the middle, enabling cornering, which almost defies belief. As well as that central articulation point, the wheels steer too, making for a machine that can tuck into the tightest squeezes. Under the hood, you’ll find a Kohler-derived turbocharged inline-four producing 75 horsepower. A 16 + 16 transmission delivers power to the wheels, which, as noted, can swivel and turn the Vega 85 Dualsteer with utter precision. Close-in work can therefore be achieved with plenty of power left over for powerful PTO and hydraulics.

Ferrari Vega 85 dualsteer — runner-up for specialist tractor of the year, but a winner with a 70-degree turning angle

The driver’s cabin provides a clear allaround view, which is necessary as the entire seat and equipment binnacle can rotate 180 degrees within seconds. Some applications require tools in front of the tractor and some behind. Ferrari has solved this conundrum by making the Vega

85 Dualsteer swiftly reversible. The driving platform is not only mounted for rotation; it’s also isolated from vibration and noise, making for a more comfortable day’s work. Of course, the Vega’s ace card is that extreme 70-degree turning angle, but

this Italian machine has more to offer than just a single party piece. Adopt one for your orchard duties, and as well as a practical workhorse, you’ll be able to boast that you have a real Ferrari in the garage.

FORESTRY & LOGGING

Forestry versus carbon The Forest Owners Association is telling Federated Farmers to educate itself about how the Overseas Investment Act works before making any more false claims about non-existent overseas investment in carbon farming. Carbon farming is where trees are not intended to be harvested, and the only income is from carbon credits. An unknown area of carbon farming has been planted by New Zealand landowners, with a number of farmers most likely planning on such ‘plant and leave’ forests on the more remote, steep and unproductive parts of their farms. Federated Farmers has called on the government to change the rules of the special forestry test for overseas forest investment, claiming that overseas investors are carbon farming and taking farmland out of production. “This can’t be true because any overseas investor using the special forestry test to obtain Overseas Investment Office consent is banned from carbon farming,” says Forest Owners Association president Phil Taylor. “The rules are quite clear. If you are an overseas investor, you can only plant with the intention of harvesting. “There are plenty of powers in the National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry, which is under the RMA, and the Overseas Investment Act, for monitoring and ensuring compliance, directly and through the compulsory registration and monitoring of the forests by regional authorities.

Carbon farming is where trees are not intended to be harvested, and the only income is from carbon credits

“The rules include boundary and river setbacks for planting and land preparation. The owners have to invest at the outset in means to produce timber, and the regulations enforce that all the way through the planting, growing and harvest cycle. “Federated Farmers is claiming there is no mechanism to ensure this happens, but it has failed to name a single example of non-compliance. “Nor has it been able to identify one single overseas investor who has been given approval to buy New Zealand owned farmland to plant carbon only forests. “A statement by Federated Farmers’ Meat and Wool chair expressed concern that there are no rules to make forest owners prune their trees.

“That either shows how misinformed Feds is or that the farmer organisation alarmingly now wants the government to make such laws. “It is a commercial decision every forest owner has made on the grade of timber they want to produce. Currently, 61 per cent of all forests are unpruned, including in the more than 300,000 hectares of production forests on hill country farms. “I am astonished that Federated Farmers, of all organisations, is suggesting the government force farmers to prune their trees. It would be the same as if the government instructed all sheep farmers to only run cattle.

“The Climate Change Commission has recommended to the government that 380,000 hectares of production forest be planted by 2035 to meet New Zealand’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. “The Federated Farmers’ campaign would restrict all plantation forestry, and so there is a real risk that the planting rate will fall short. “That, in turn, would mean an even larger national bill for buying credits overseas, greater fast-track emissions reductions required elsewhere in the New Zealand economy, less profitable farming with lower timber income, and further reduction of livestock numbers.” Phil Taylor says the FOA is not involved with, nor promoting, carbon farming. “Carbon farming on land which can be used to produce timber or livestock doesn’t make sense. Carbon farming employs very few people. The practice presents fire, pest and disease risks. “We would much rather be talking with Federated Farmers about our mutual concerns about real carbon farming and how we can integrate production forestry into farming operations, than having to put the Feds right in situations where there is no carbon farming at all.”

The importance of wetlands

In light of World Wetlands Day, which occurred on February 2, now is a good time to reflect on the benefits that wetlands provide.

Bala Tikkisetty — sustainable agriculture adviser

“Wetlands are like giant kidneys, protecting the health of waterways by helping to dilute and filter harmful material,” says sustainable agriculture adviser Bala Tikkisetty. “Wetlands once covered large areas of the country. Now they are some of our rarest and most at-risk ecosystems. They contain a diverse range of plants and animals and are home to many rare and threatened species that are remnants of the original biodiversity of the area.” Wetland is a generic term for the wet margins of lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, estuaries, lagoons, bogs and swamps. “It is estimated that about 90 per cent of New Zealand’s wetlands have been drained over time, with wetlands now occupying only about two per cent of the country’s total land area. This is one of the largest wetland losses anywhere in the world.

“Natural wetlands have been appropriately termed the kidneys of the landscape because of their ability to store, assimilate and transform contaminants lost from the land before they reach waterways. “One of the practices for reducing the effects of intensive agriculture is to strategically incorporate wetlands into farming systems. Sometimes it may be as simple as fencing out existing wet areas, or it might involve creating one with a low bank. “Many farms have low-lying and wet areas that can be managed as small wetlands with minimal impact on farm production, but potentially major benefits for water quality and biodiversity. “Nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment and pathogens enter waterways through groundwater and surface run-off. Wetland vegetation uses these nutrients for growth.

Bala explains the importance of wetlands for protecting the health of waterways

“Research indicates that wetlands remove up to 90 per cent of nitrates from groundwater through a process called denitrification. Plants trap sediment suspended in water, improving water quality. In riparian areas, their roots hold a stream bank together, reducing erosion. “Nutrient loss from farms is greatest when the volume and speed of run-off water are greatest, either through surface run-off or through the soil profile. Slowing down and controlling water movements across farmland is a critical factor in reducing nutrient loss into waterways. “A series of small, shallow sediment traps or sediment retention dams can be constructed throughout the catchment to take some of the energy out of the water. If these are managed to remain wet for most of the year, they will replace those kidney-like

functions and enhance the farm’s environmental outcomes.” “Wetlands also regulate the flow of water by soaking up excess floodwater and slowly releasing it to maintain summer flows or recharge groundwater.” Regional councils can offer advice to landowners on managing wetlands, including fencing, planting and weed control. “It is important to check the rules and regulations and to seek goodquality advice to ensure our wetlands are properly cared for as complex, delicate ecosystems in a productive agricultural landscape. “Before undertaking any excavation work, always check with your local council on regulations regarding earthworks in and around natural waterways and wetlands.”

NAIT public consultation National Animal Identification and Tracing Scheme manager, NAIT Limited, has begun formal consultation with farmers and collection agents on proposed increases to NAIT levies. Together with proposed increases in Crown and deer industry contributions, these levies will be used to continue the important work NAIT Limited has been doing since the M bovis outbreak in 2017 to improve the traceability system. So that it is easy for farmers to use and it performs in the event of a disease outbreak. “Farmers rely on us to provide the tools and information they need to help reduce their on-farm biosecurity risk and manage disease,” says head of traceability Kevin Forward. “Having accurate, up to date, on-farm data and a reliable animal tracing system plays a vital role in limiting the impact of a disease outbreak, supports food assurance,

Kevin Forward, NAIT head of traceability

and helps NZ maintain access to international markets.

“The M bovis outbreak in 2017 showed us that the NAIT system was not performing as it should, and farmers have told us that the system is difficult to use. “Since then, NAIT Limited has been working with its stakeholders to improve NAIT to make it easier for farmers to understand and meet their NAIT obligations and to ensure the system performs in the event of a future outbreak. “Increases in NAIT tag and slaughter levies, as well as the relative contribution from the deer industry and the government, will enable NAIT Limited to continue this work.” In 2012, the NAIT tag levy was set at $1.10, then reduced over time to 90 cents. The slaughter levy was set at $1.35 and was reduced to 50 cents a head. NAIT Limited now proposes an increase in the tag levy to $1.35 and the slaughter levy to $1.77.

“Historically, we have kept NAIT levies low, but they were designed to be flexible, to change when we needed them to, and they haven’t been reviewed or increased since 2014. “We have delayed any increase for as long as possible while we used reserves and established a plan to deliver. “We acknowledge the proposed increases come at a time when many farmers are already under financial pressure, but we also know from our experience with M bovis and Bovine TB that, if we have another disease outbreak, not having the right systems in place will cost much more.” Formal consultation will take place between January 21 and February 25, 2022. For more information, go to ospri.co.nz/ nait-levy-consultation.

Nevada’s tips and predictions by Michael Prestidge

Global pressure on environmental issues, together with the impact and aftermath of Covid-19, promise interesting times ahead and our best advice is to act now.

Michael Prestidge — Nevada Effluent management specialist

Compliance If you’re already facing compliance issues, there’s a lot that can be done to not only ensure your farm is meeting regulations but to future-proof to reduce the chances of needing to make major changes soon. Many farmers who already operate well within current rules and regulations shouldn’t have too much difficulty adapting and progressing to reasonably foreseeable changes. Getting things sorted now will have a number of benefits:  You can get a new consent, which would then be 25 years plus your remaining term. Resource consent conditions may vary between regions  Inflation is likely to increase further, meaning there’s never a cheaper time to get things done than now  Affordability — the interest on borrowing money now will probably be less than what the cost of products and services will be in a few years.  Tax relief. Increased income means increased tax. Invest into the farm to offset your income Synthetic nitrogen usage Restrictions on nitrogen usage and price hikes are forcing farmers to review their fertiliser and effluent use. Many

EL9 PC Pump

are investing in slurry tankers to spread evenly over the entire farm. This trend is likely to continue, as with supplements such as AddGreen™. Tractor-based spreaders make for easy recording by using your tractor’s GPS. It is a new requirement for 2022. Labour shortages Although we’re looking forward to the borders opening up to bring back some of the international workforce, there are no guarantees we’ll see an immediate improvement in labour shortages. To avoid emergencies, we recommend farmers have efficient equipment and a regular pumping regime. It is also a good idea to own your own tanker

for a contingency plan as contractors are struggling to meet their workload too. Maybe team up with a friend or neighbour. Moving away from disc injectors and dropper booms There has been a lot of discussion over the use of disc injectors and dropper booms for effluent application. Some farmers have

found the application has caused contamination of the subsequent crop, while injectors increase the likelihood of leaching. Nevada’s RainWave™ is proving to be the way to go moving forward due to their controlled, even application and minimal volatilisation. We might also see a reversion to low-pressure irrigators instead of rainguns.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Keepers of bees Warkworth Beekeepers Society was founded in September 2016 thanks to two great keepers of bees. Mr Peter McNab managed to convince a group of hobbyist and commercial beekeeping friends to form a club for locals. Mr Don Alford set everything in motion by creating the club and forming the sterling committee. Our first club night was so packed people had to stand outside the town hall with 80 members signing on immediately for our monthly meetings. The club has grown to include a club apiary with eight training hives, education in schools, sector-specific talks, excursions, DIY sessions, movie nights and plenty of bee and pollinatorrelated topics. Warkworth Beekeepers was proudly involved in creating the hugely successful Big Buzz Honey & Bee Festival,

100% Local TROUGHS

promoting and showing many small and large beekeeping enterprises, their honey, their stories and New Zealand’s unique environment. It was the first-ever honey and bee festival in New Zealand and Warkworth Beekeepers was honoured to be a part. The club has some great team members on the committee who constantly strive to keep our members informed and entertained. Our apiary officer Wilf Berger has inspired many people to become more involved with their bees through his hands-on apiary field days. Our bee gurus Matt Wech and Pete Johnston always find ways to share their beekeeping knowledge in a fun and practical manner.

From the start, our club secretaries Grass and Michelle Esposti have been enthusiastic organisers for many of the club’s activities and events, cheerfully assisted by chairman Paul Goodyear, committee members Delyse Carlaw, John Bryham and Kurt Dammers. Even if you do not want to own bees, we offer the opportunity to gain insight and knowledge on diverse ways to help pollinators, honey and native bees, plus planting advice during a social night out. We are eager to have new committee members on board with fresh ideas.

The Warkworth Beekeepers Club meets at the Matakana Hall from 6.30pm–8.30pm every first Wednesday of the month (excluding January and June and only at the orange traffic light setting). Membership costs $30 a year with a one-off $20 joining fee. The club is open to all ages and everyone interested in bees, beekeeping, pollinators and the environment. A lot of mechanical machinery has been replaced by modern electrics and electronics, with even a standard tractor chair now looking more like Captain Kirk’s battle station in a video. However, short circuits, poor connections, faulty motherboards and pesky warning lights dampen the fun of using high tech machinery. Today’s faults’ are often caused by water ingress, humidity, condensation, lime and fertiliser, as well as good old rust and electrolysis. Milking robots, pumps and automatic harvesters don’t work without computers, communication equipment and backup batteries. It’s safe to say that harsh farm conditions and electronics will never really be friends, so we need to find a way to immunise the touchy electronics, switches, fuse boxes and outdoor connectors from manure, moisture, sulphur, lime and other chemicals. A light spray of CorrosionX will do just that. Thin enough to not attract dust. Massively resistant against the above-mentioned enemies without even prepping or drying the metal surfaces or PCBs. You can perfectly well apply CorrosionX products over live, rusty, and even wet metals of all sorts, but also overall electrics and electronics. TAILORED LEGAL SOLUTIONS LIMITED SPECIALIST BOUTIQUE LAW FIRM MOVES TO RURAL BASED CHAMBERS “I’m not sure when rural New Zealand became the bad guy but the stigma, regulation, political blame and tightening of the noose means a lot of people are feeling the pinch; some are feeling really backed into a corner. In those times just knowing where to turn is half the battle”. Local boutique law firm, Tailored Legal Solutions Limited, has hit another milestone. After 7 years based in offices on Victoria Street, Dargaville, this specialist litigation practice is moving to rural-based legal chambers in January 2022. Under the direction of local “west-coast girl” Emma Smith, Tailored Legal is a specialist commercial and civil litigation practise, with a particular speciality in Agribusiness and Rural Litigation. “It’s important our clients feel comfortable when they meet with us – we’ve worked hard to find the right space to achieve an environment which helps our clients (and our team) to relax and feel reassured.” As Barrister & Solicitor, Emma acts for rural and commercial clients across New Zealand in complex disputes / litigation involving contractual and shareholder arrangements, regulatory matters (including defence of prosecutions by regulators such as MPI and Regional Authorities), complex insolvency matters and employment disputes. Appearing regularly in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and the District Court, Emma has gained a reputation for taking on the “David & Goliath Battles”. Emma is keenly interested in clients having access to the option to litigate, mediate or meaningfully negotiate matters when the need arises, particularly in the arena of rural and farming litigation where industry knowledge is key. From challenging fraudulent commercial arrangements to pursuing compensation for the wrongful interference by a regulator in rural business operations, Emma’s recent case load has been testimony to the breadth of work of this boutique litigation practice. Emma also works with local and regional business clients, particularly in respect of business structuring, risk mitigation strategies, employment planning and commercial arrangements. Emma enjoys helping clients thrive as they work through the various stages of business growth and development.

Tailored Legal Solutions will, from January 1, 2022, be based from Bespoke Chambers 10 minutes from Dargaville Town Centre. First contact with Emma and the team may be made by phone, email or in person with prior appointment. Meetings can be arranged at a time and location which is mutually agreeable. Home, business, farm and site visits are all possible or, alternatively, we can host a meeting in one of our two tailored meeting venues. We have also embraced technology options for all clients and can host meetings via Zoom, MS Teams, Skype and Messenger Face Time as suits the clients.
