We have maintained, in line with our charitable trust status, the commitment to invest in Northland’s agricultural future. We are pleased to give financial support to numerous Northland organisations and clubs again. We see this event as an opportunity for town and country to unite in an event to share and promote the wonderful lifestyle sectors that our country has to offer to ensure a solid foundation of support for our primary industry through the partnership we have with exhibitors.

Exhibitors will be offering technological expertise, support and the best deals to be had over the three days. This event creates an opportune time for farmers and the public to have dealers, service providers and attractions in one place to talk to at their convenience. On behalf of the Northland Field Days, I hope you all experience a great time and enjoy what there is on offer at New Zealand’s friendliest field days. I wish you all a very successful and safe 2024.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

As both a farmer and chair of the Northland Regional Council, it gives me great pleasure to welcome visitors and exhibitors to this year’s Northland Field Days. This annual event, held over three days, is the largest agri-event in Northland. It attracts hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest in farming innovations and large numbers of visitors, making it an ideal opportunity to make connections and engage with our rural community. NRC has been a regular exhibitor at field days over the years — this year will be no exception. The event provides us a great opportunity to engage directly with our rural sector about our work and related issues facing the region. This year, we’re especially keen to hear your views on our shared freshwater journey. Our draft Freshwater Plan Change is a blueprint for improving the health of Northland’s Freshwater — our rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and aquifers. There are many different views, from those who think we’re not going far enough to those who don’t think much change is needed. The more feedback we get — the better informed our decisions will be. We know the rural sector will be one of the parts of

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A SHOWCASE FOR

TOWN AND COUNTRY BY PAUL CAMPBELL A focus on farming is the centre of attention as the Northland Field Days committee gets ready to showcase the region and they haven’t forgotten to add a recipe for lots of family fun as well.

T

he gates will open this year on Thursday, February 29, when more than 300 exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in farming technology, machinery and innovations, along with all things rural hailing from here at home and overseas. The Dargaville event is a redletter time for the local economy with accommodation and service industries also gearing up for a visitor influx. It’s the largest annual agricultural event in Northland where there is something for everyone, rural or urban. In addition to the agricultural theme, there will be health, home and leisure exhibitors along with plenty of food and entertainment. “Bring the whole family and have a great day out,” says Northland Field Days coordinator Luciana Schwarz.

“We have new attractions with family in mind and one is a mini-water park with water gliders for kids and adults and more. So come prepared to escape the possible hot days we may have. There’s also a maize maze that will challenge families. Food court areas are clearly marked throughout the event with many food vendors, coffee, refreshments, ice cream and much more. “If you are looking for a place to rest or something delicious to eat, look for one of the food courts and the lifestyle area where there are two large pavilions and many outdoor lifestyle sites bringing products and services.” From home, garden and leisure to food, wine and gadgets, the list grows yearly. The popular crowd-pleasing events will be back in for this year,

Lose the family perhaps in the maize maze at the field days

Take in the lawn mower racing for petrol heads and enthusiasts. This innovation allows people from all walks of life to get involved, compete and have a lot of fun in the process with an exciting form of motorsport. There will also be free rides, and if you are a truck fanatic of any age, there’s the Mini Mack Rides — it will be a great way to get around the field days from site G10. For a taste of rural-orientated competition, Fencing Contractors Association NZ will be on-site at the fencing hub on Rowland

Road, where they’ll showcase fencing contests for the NZ Young Farmers, fencing demonstrations, best practice and more. The Northland Sheep Dog Trials is back as a great farming and urban crowd-pleaser. “One of our most popular events, sheep dog trials are part of our Kiwi DNA,“ says Luciana. “People of all ages delight in watching the best sheep dogs from around Northland compete. Alistair and Doug the Digger will be there so the young ones can have a go at driving the digger.

For the young at heart, there will also be a digger set up, so head on to sites A13– A15 on Rowland Road to have a chat and drive a machine.” Caro’s Crazy Critters Mobile Farm will be allowing children of all ages (and those children at heart) the opportunity to experience hands-on and personal interaction with a range of friendly farm and domestic animals that you may otherwise not get to meet in a safe environment. The volunteers from the Dargaville Fire Brigade will be on-site

ow in his 80s, retired farmer and Land Search and Rescue patron Dave Withers is a past president of the New Zealand Hunts Association, a sport he carried on from the days when he rode for work each day when musterers would be hired for eight months of the year to bring sheep in from the far reaches of Ngamatea Station. “Northland has many fond memories of hunting on a large property not far at all from Cape Reinga,” said Dave. “In fact, I met my long-term accountant up there, and it has been a long association with fellow hunting enthusiast Ian Brown from Whangārei.” Back in 1959, Dave was a 20-yearold armed with a camera and the colour transparencies he took lay in a dark cupboard for the next 60-plus years, to emerge in a digitised new record detailing a life that has long been passed by.

in my saddlebags. It had a light meter, and I pretty much became self-taught in its operation. “Boy, that central North Island high country could be cold. I remember line huts where rainwater ran cold and deep across the dirt floor. We were constantly shivering and snowed into huts, so bored we would reread the descriptions on cereal packets, sauce bottles and the like. “It was not always winter, and high summer in the rolling hills was a joy in the aptly named Golden Hills. Despite their youth, most of the musterers were busy on long and hard working days, with daily survival an integral part of their efforts. It was not all work and no play. There was great adventure as well. “Deer hunting was a popular diversion, and I shot my share of good stags. By the same token, I remember once riding my horse Star over a hill, and there was a big 14-pointer just looking at me. He was in velvet, and his antlers appeared to be wavering in the wind. There was a picture to behold,

and I kept my rifle lowered. The moment was far too magic to spoil, and he soon sauntered away free. “Overall, though, horses have been a major part of my life, and I have hunted with every pack of hounds in New Zealand involving full tours of both North and South Islands. Horses have also taken me across the Tasman, where I went with the New Zealand Dressage Team. I am so pleased today to see that equestrian events are carried on and horse sport days organised by riding enthusiasts with the focus on youngsters. “I am also interested to see a new sport called Working Equitation, which means a working horse like we rode back in the old days can shine in sport, using traditional horsemanship. “It only recently came to New Zealand but is very popular and growing overseas in countries where they still use horses for work in the field. Horsemen and women can take part in events using the tack and dress as they choose, and if they want to ride English style,

sidesaddle or Western, whatever is their style. “An intense interest in horses notwithstanding, the wilderness will always remain closest to my heart. Back in those times depicted in the pictures in the book Ngamatea, on Golden Hills were days of intense physical activity and the companionship of mates who became lifelong friends. Overall, there was a simple communion with nature. My world was a vast outdoor theatre often shared out in the hills only with my horse and my dog. “Now, I have been able to publish those long ago photographs, many of them featuring those wonderful horses that truly were our companions. The landscape book now is available from me at home, at davidwithers@ xtra.co.nz or on 06 838 3858 at $70 plus postage.”

KEEPING

As caretakers of the land, with views from Huruiki maunga out to the ocean, Brandon and Kiri Edwards are passionate about their property and sharing the natural beauty and spirituality with others.

HISTORY ALIVE BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

“H

uruiki is the maunga of our whānau, hapū and iwi,” says Brandon. “Our location’s steeped in history, and the views we have are as impressive as the location itself. It’s surrounded by awesome springs. Some feed into the Kaipara Moana and the water often cloaks the area in mist. “I grew up at Hikurangi and Puhipuhi, and my tribal connections are here through Ngāti Hau and Ngātiwai. “It’s been quite the journey for me to reconnect with Huruiki. I had a lifelong dream that one day the maunga would return to whānau, hapū and iwi, and whānau, hapū and iwi would return to our maunga. “I had my eye on it from a very young age. Somehow, some way, some time, I would

get our maunga back because Huruiki is the jewel in the crown and significant for both Ngāti Hau and Ngātiwai.” In 2011, when he secured the land, he surprised his whānau with the news. “I picked up my uncle, my dad’s older brother, and drove him to Huruiki. During the trip, even though he was virtually blind, he pointed out sites of significance and told us many significant stories. As the memories came back, the tears just flowed down his face. “It’s a beautiful and peaceful environment to raise our three children. We bought the 350 hectares for personal and cultural reasons rather than commercial.” Most recently, a beautiful waiata called Huruiki: We Stand with You, was composed by te whānau Mānihera.

since 2013 and see our role on the land as caregivers, and we’re improving the native flora and fauna surrounding the maunga. “In more recent times, we’ve been working with the Kaipara Moana Remediation programme. KMR supports a growing number of Navigator projects.

The Edwards whānau are excited to be working the Kaipara Moana Remediation programme to enhance their land

“These involve landowners or groups across the catchment who are keen to lead larger-scale or innovative sediment reduction projects and share their experience and learnings with others in their community, iwi/hapū, or sector. “Ngāherehere o Huruiki is a reforestation project aimed at restoring the native forest and unique ecosystem of Huruiki, enhancing the mauri (life force) of the forest and land, addressing biodiversity degradation and improving water quality. “The project has planted 60,000 native trees over 20ha to date, with an aim to plant more native trees over an additional 100ha. “Through a Navigator project investment, KMR has worked with whānau to plant 5,500 trees and complete 400m of fencing. “The project included restoring native forests, controlling pests, improving water

quality and reconnecting whānau, hapū and iwi with our maunga. A key project focus was involving wider whānau, hapū and iwi. “As kaimanaaki, we’re looking after the land as best we can and love once again seeing whānau, hapū and iwi standing happily and proudly on our maunga. “We want to facilitate opportunities for our whānau, hapū and iwi to return to our maunga to help strengthen our identity and knowledge of who we are and where we come from.” The Edwards also breed and finish Aberdeen Angus cattle. “We’re passionate about farming in harmony with the environment. While we are not an organic farm, we don’t use chemicals. “Te Ao Māori is our farming philosophy. Our aim is to find an equilibrium with nature where we don’t need inputs. Where

we co-exist with nature sustainably and don’t need to top anything up.” “It’s been eight years since we planted our first natives on the land. We estimate we have around 100,000 more hectares to plant and nine kilometres of fencing to undertake to protect areas of natives from grazing. “It’s been really good working with KMR. We definitely think people should be jumping on board. Message from Avoca after 75 years

AY

BU

ADVERTORIAL T, WORK, P EA L Y,

THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL

www.theregions.co.nz

Avoca director Bryce Manderson is looking forward to meeting up with loyal clients at the 2024 Northland Field Days. “It’s a great chance for our team to check in on how people are going and say thanks for their ongoing support, so I welcome people to come and have a yarn with our team at site i7,” says Bryce. “We are lucky to have loyal clients going back 75 years, and we appreciate that. Equally, there are plenty of farmers who should be thinking about their soil health and fertility management. Understanding the benefits of putting lime on their land is becoming extremely critical to farming. “Having now spent 40 years in the lime industry, I have unfortunately witnessed a decline in lime application over the past 20 years. In dairy farming, in my opinion, we have seen massive overuse of ‘acidifying’ nitrogen.” Bryce believes sheep and beef farmers are being led to believe that lime application on hill country is not cost-effective. “Besides this being false, lack of liming will be far more costly long-term. Even low rates of liming annually on hill country have proved cost-effective. These factors have led to the biggest problem in farming — low pH (or soil acidity). “In fact, low pH has major detrimental effects on soil structure, soil biology and the availability of soil nutrients to the

Bryce Manderson — Avoca director

plant. Contrary to what farmers may have been told, the ideal pH is 6.2–6.3. “At this level, we are getting the release of major and minor nutrients that have been locked up at low pH levels.” With the significant farm cost increases detrimentally impacting farming profitability, Bryce is urging farmers to apply lime to release those much-needed nutrients, hence saving fertiliser costs.

“I am looking forward to seeing people at the field days and talking to them about the benefits of lime. While they are at our tent, they can take advantage of our lime special and by ordering on the day, they will receive a discount of $2 per tonne. “We are also offering two prizes of 15 tonnes of lime each, valued at $555 plus GST, along with another draw for two gift hampers, so we look forward to people swinging by and entering.”

Hands-down best mower in NZ Agricultural machinery specialist FarmShop and European mower manufacturer SaMASZ have set a goal to be the NZ market leader in hay mower sales by 2027. FarmShop has just returned from SaMASZ headquarters in Poland, where the management teams fleshed out how this promise will come to light. To be the number one specialist in the hay mower market, FarmShop has qualified technicians who recently trained on the floor at SaMASZ in Poland. A nationwide roll-out of service agents is underway (supported by a dedicated 0800 SaMASZ helpline). When customers commit to an annual servicing programme, their warranty will increase from two to three years. SaMASZ is celebrating 40 successful years in business, and New Zealand has been identified as one of their top 10 countries for growth. That is excellent news for Northland contractors when looking at a sharp price on a mower for the 2025 season. Achieving number one on the NZ market will require a high-performing machine. With a presence in more than 70 countries (including the largest exporter to France) and more than 160,000 mowers produced since its inception in 1984, SaMASZ is a leader on the international stage. While the brand is becoming familiar in NZ, many farmers and contractors are still new to its performance and aftersales promise.

FarmShop receives a royal welcome from SaMASZ owner and key personnel

As part of their commitment to customers Down Under, SaMASZ has designed customised mowers to suit local conditions. A few examples include robust and tough frames, stoneproof knife holders, replaceable stone protectors, and the development of thicker 25mm spur gears with a bevelled edge; no sharp edges to catch or break means fewer maintenance costs. Another reason the mowers are respected is that SaMASZ also boasts having the fastest blade tip speed of 3,200rpm, which is an important factor

in mower performance as it provides a cleaner and faster cut. The quick-change blades are 15mm longer, which means a closer cut with no striping in the field. The cutter bar of their GigaCut model hugs the contour of the ground, and the wider width is excellent for straddling the pivot irrigation ruts. The five-stage paint process is unlike anything seen here. Like the automobile industry, every part is shot blast, rust treated and given two coats of electrophoretic paint for longer life — good news for NZ mowers, often stored outdoors.

For contractor Steve Wood from Dargaville, Samasz is his go-to mower. Steve purchased the SaMASZ KDD941 Triples from FarmShop in July 2019, and showed it to the SaMASZ team when they visited NZ in February 2023. After grinding out more than 10,000 hectares, the condition of his mower impressed SaMASZ — Steve hopes to get another 10,000 hectares out of it. “This is our go-to mower; it runs daily and deals with very rough acres. I’ve seen it run over many things that cockies have left in the paddocks, fence posts and so on, yet we’ve had nothing go wrong — it’s solid. Before we bought it, I made sure the parts would be available — gearbox bits, spools, etc. I even bought parts, but they’re still sitting in the shed,” Steve says. For readers of Kaipara Lifestyler, FarmShop is located in your neighbourhood in Kaiwaka. The team takes trade-ins and can discuss sharp finance arrangements, including three payments spread over three years. If you act quickly, you might be the first to own a SaMASZ mower in the striking new colourway about to launch. Visit farmshop.co.nz. Catch up with FarmShop at Northland Field Days – February 29 until March 1–2.

National working for Northland

FEbRuARY 2024

by Grant McCallum, MP for Northland

As the new National Party MP for Northland, I am excited to be starting the political year under our new coalition government. I have seen the challenges our farmers have faced over the last six years. Having four new gumboot-wearing farmers added to the National caucus, complemented with new representation from our coalition partners, means the future is bright with some of the strongest rural representation parliament has had in years. Northland has had a rough go since weathering the storm, metaphorically and literally, over the last year. The social and economic impact of Cyclone Gabrielle has been seen across our region in the last 12 months, especially highlighting the weakness of our roading infrastructure. The 58-day closure of the Brynderwyns last year was tough on our local economy, with another nine weeks of closure

“This event serves as a wonderful opportunity to bring Northland together.” planned this year. I have spoken with many businesses directly affected by the uncertainty, and as part of our coalition agreement, work will begin to find a new route around the Brynderwyns. Resilient roads are vital to ensuring our growth and success as a region. Among some of the worst affected were Northland’s kūmara growers, some of whom couldn’t pull anything from the ground at all due to flooding. I am pleased to see they are having a better year so

Grant McCallum, MP for Northland

far, and I hope the season brings good weather and a bumper crop. Attention needs to be brought to the work of the Rural Support Trust and

Federated Farmers for their work in cyclone-affected areas. Whether it be replacing fencing on rural properties, making house calls or advocating at central and local government levels to get our rural communities the support they need, their work has been vital. I’d also like to offer my congratulations to the organisers of Northland Field Days. Despite the hardships and challenges faced by the committee in recent years, this event serves as a wonderful opportunity to bring Northland together and honour our rural communities and their contribution to our region. This year will be a year of change. We will be a government that delivers on our campaign promises, strengthens our economy, and builds resilient infrastructure for all New Zealanders. We are only just getting started.

Example of a typical KMR plan

The Kaipara Moana has unique — and nationally important — values The Kaipara is the largest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, and a place of global significance. As the ‘nursery’ for several fish species, the Kaipara also has unique, national economic value. For example, snapper is New Zealand’s top commercial inshore fishery, creating export revenue of around $35m a year and contributing $69m to the economy & 579 jobs each year. However, sediments from the land are putting both the Kaipara Moana and the fishery at risk.

KMR aims to protect and restore the mauri of the Kaipara Moana. Our long-term aspiration is to halve sediment flows into the harbour.

SEE US AT THE NORTHLAND FIELD DAYS SITE #H4 KMR is now working across the landscape We have recently expanded our focus on waterway protection to include projects on erosion-prone hill country. KMR can now co-fund a range of projects including: • Fencing to protect waterways KMR invests in programmes to restore wetlands, fence off rivers and streams, plant trees and regenerate forest on erosion-prone land, bringing wider benefits - including thriving rural communities and enhanced connection to local waterways, greater protection for valued species, and resilience to extreme weather. An eighth of the catchment is highly erodible land.

• Native planting near waterways • Managing erodible hill country including: • Continuous canopy and permanent forest cover using native species or non-weedy, non-pine exotic species (e.g. eucalypts or redwoods). • Fencing and management to support regeneration of native forest. • Space planting of poplars while maintaining some grazing (subject to poplar supply). What KMR provides: • Free advice — we walk the land with you to discuss your aspirations and project options • Funding — typically, KMR pays up to 50% of the cost of eligible sediment reduction projects • For groups such as catchment groups or marae, we can also help with the cost of engagement, coordination and project management • Planning and support — our Field Advisors prepare a plan to access KMR funding and provide support through the project

Matakohe beef farmer David Byles is one of almost 600 farmers working with KMR

KMR is already working with close to half of the estimated pastoral landowners in the catchment.

Prolan rust protects 52-metre sprayer

Customer Greg Lovett is stoked with the protection provided by a coating of New Zealand-made Prolan Extreme corrosion protection on his Agrifac Endurance 52-metre sprayer. Based in the South Island, Greg has an extensive horticultural operation growing all types of vegetables, onions, carrots, beetroot, oats, wheat and barley. As part of his operation, a large agricultural sprayer is used to apply liquid urea, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Greg made an enquiry to Prolan NZ asking if Prolan Extreme corrosion protection could be used to protect his agricultural gear. This environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin has International NSF food-grade approvals, so it fits perfectly with his horticultural operation. In July 2023, Chris, the maintenance manager at Lovett Farm, applied a coating of Prolan to the sprayer to coincide with the busy production period. The whole boom of the sprayer was washed down before the application and allowed to dry off. The product was applied using an airless/painttype sprayer available from retail stores such as Super Cheap or Repco. One litre of Prolan covers 8–10 square metres. Chris says: “An application of Prolan is an easy process with minimal preparation required on the surface to be coated. The clean-up of the spray gear was easy, too, with a quick clean of the sprayer with a hot water flush.” In January 2024, Chris did a quality check on all the gear in the business’s

downtime. As part of this, the sprayer boom was checked for cracks and general maintenance was carried out. The Prolan coating was removed to see if there were any problems. Chris says: “To remove the Prolan Extreme, a hot wash high-pressure washer was applied to the boom. It took about three hours at temperatures above 100C to remove the Prolan coating — the whole process was easy.” The results speak for themselves, say Chris and Greg, “Unbelievable the boom returned to its original tiptop condition with no corrosion or parts replacement required. The Prolan remained on the surface; although it became dusty, the protection was there. Chris would recommend a coating to any machinery, even his father’s hedge shelter trimmer blades, for easy maintenance and protection.” Going forward, the team at Lovett Farms will be following a process of applying a Prolan coating to machinery and equipment in the business downtime and then removing and recoating once a year. That ensures any problems are detected early, prevents parts replacement and the assets retain a very good resale value. Prolan Extreme natural environmentally friendly rust protection, safe on the user, easy to apply and protects assets long-term.

Do I need extra magnesium? (Part one)

by John Arts

Magnesium is one of my most frequently prescribed supplements; this is because magnesium is used in multiple enzymes and affects most tissue types. In particular, it relaxes both nerves and blood vessels. Relaxing nerves is helpful for sleep and restless legs while relaxing blood vessels helps with lowering blood pressure and helping circulation. Magnesium is involved in numerous body processes and can help problems in different tissue types and body systems, especially muscles. I recommend it for cramps, restless legs, PMS, hypertension and heart rhythm problems. I usually recommend that magnesium be taken 30–60 minutes in bed for maximum impact on muscles and nerves and to help with sleep. If taken for hypertension — daytime and evening dose is recommended. I have many clients now largely free of night cramps and restless legs. In stubborn cases, I also add a multi-mineral/antioxidant complex to help with nighttime circulation and improve muscle function. It is rare that we cannot get improvements with these problems that can significantly disrupt our sleep. Unfortunately, many magnesium supplements have just one form of

magnesium and are one a day, making dose experimentation almost impossible. In my experience, the required dosage differs a lot between people with similar problems. Additionally, many supplements use cheaper, low-grade ingredients, which are harsh on the digestive tract. I prefer to use three different forms of magnesium. While this makes manufacturing more expensive, each form of magnesium is absorbed differently. I combine bioavailable marine (seaweed) sourced magnesium with amino acid chelated magnesium diglycinate with magnesium citrate. I deliberately formulated the capsules to have a dosage range. Humbled by generosity

Despite an economically challenging 2023, Northlanders still dug deep, donating more than $302,000 to the 2023 Northland Rescue Helicopter annual appeal with fundraising. Marketing manager Jan Hewitt says she is blown away by Northlanders’ generosity 36 years after the service was established. “Year in, year out, our local community supports us in the most amazing way, whether it’s doing a fundraiser on our behalf, donating some coins or cash, or sponsoring us in some way,” says Mrs Hewitt. “We couldn’t do our jobs without our loyal media partners, local businesses, ambassadors and staff who help fly the flag for the operation and assist us with fundraising events and presentations to community organisations, schools and businesses. “It’s also important that people are able to meet our team and see what a lean operation we run. There are only three of us in the fundraising team, and we’re tasked with finding around $2 million annually, which is no mean feat. “That’s why getting out and about at iconic events like the Northland A&P Show and Northland Field Days is so important. We also really enjoy having people drop by our Field Days stand with Northland Federated Farmers and hearing stories of when they were injured or ill and needed the help of one of our rescue helicopters. “Those interactions are often very emotional and are a good reminder of why the work of our engineers, pilots,

paramedics and office staff are crucial to running a life-saving charity like ours so well.” Northland Emergency Services Trust chair Paul Ahlers says given how tough times have been for people recently, it’s particularly overwhelming to receive this level of support. “This is the fourth consecutive year that our community has raised over $300,000 during our appeal period from October to Christmas, and we’re so grateful for that kindness,” he says. Some highlights of the 2023 annual appeal included the MoreFM Northland All Day Breakfast, which raised $81,000. People wanting to donate can do so at nest.org.nz/donate. ade and I met at Otamatea High School,” says Kowhai. “We bought some of my family land to bring our children up in a small town with a community feel so they can experience what we did as children.” Kowhai started growing flowers and vegetables as a hobby she could do with her boys. “Arlin is now five years old, and Jai is nearly two. We also had a baby, Jett, who didn’t make it earthside with us. Originally, I was only growing vegetables, but then I began planting flowers in memory of him. “Even though he didn’t get to spend time with us earthside, we love to acknowledge that he’s still a part of our family. Jett’s definitely an inspiration in our garden. We see things like butterflies and fantails and know he’s with us. “Last year, I had a little garden and sold a few bunches. I never planned to sell my

flowers — it just evolved. I thought if I could make enough money to pay for my seeds, that would be great. There’s lots of trial and

Teaching Arlin and Jai where their food comes from is all a part of their home and life experience

“I sell through word of mouth and by popping photos on local Facebook pages. My bouquets are seasonal. I make them myself at prices people can afford so they can have something pretty in their homes, workplaces or for gifts. “Using whatever’s flowering on the day is a very creative outlet for me. They’re whimsical, and people say they have quite a bit of nostalgia about them. “Lots of manual love and labour goes into what we do. I grow sprayfree sensational flowers and plants as naturally as possible, avoiding adding chemicals, which is important to me. This year, I decided to expand my gardens, and collected cardboard to make a new space using the no dig method.

February 2024

Kowhai has spent many hours preparing her gardens on the family land that overlooks the Kaipara Harbour

“The cardboard is the base layer and I build the beds up from there. We currently don’t have a direct water supply for the garden, so Wade collects water from the dam and carts it in a tank on a trailer.” Kowhai says she loves sharing her blooms with other people. “It’s really rewarding when you’ve planted and nurtured a seed, cared for it, and finally see it grow and flower. I love all the flowers in my cut-flower garden. Every time a new plant blooms, I think it’s my favourite until another opens. I love dahlias, zinnia, sunflowers and daisies, but they are all beautiful. “My mum is a gardener and had extensive gardens, and her talent came through to me. My granny had a garden as

well and we always picked flowers together. My parents also did organic market gardening on the property, so my boys are the sixth generation to be involved here. “I have lots of childhood memories, and it’s nice to be bringing my children up in the house I grew up in. The boys know every flower and vegetable plant by name. It’s cool that they’re getting to learn off the land. That’s important to us because we think children can get a bit disconnected from the land with all the modern-day things. “You may see pretty flowers or vegetables at the end, but we need to know the basics of where food and flowers come from, how things are grown and what happens behind the scenes. It’s nice that Arlin and Jai can

pick vegetables fresh from the garden and have all the nutritional benefits. “I love inspiring other people as well. I get asked how they can start growing. I say to just start somewhere and don’t get too caught up in the how because you will find what works for you. Some things don’t work, but that’s gardening. Even if you begin with one packet of seeds, it’s amazing what you can end up with. “When I first dreamt of having a garden, it was daunting of how I was going to get there. Now, we see it beautiful with all the work coming to fruition. Being able to do what we do with our boys is the most satisfying thing, and seeing a dream come to life has been a wonderful experience. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

FIGHTING FOR

FARMERS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

“A

round 1988, as a young adult, I secured my first farm job here in Ruawai and now own one dairy farm and lease another in the area,” says Mark. “My partner Jodie and I have a blended family of four children. Our business is milking cows and living the country dream. We have a 285-acre property with predominantly Friesian cattle and a few mixed breeds.” The farm is a grade two using grass silage, a small amount of kernel and summer turnips. “We work as efficiently as possible and operate close to budget. We don’t grow maize due to the land size. As farmers, we have a love of the land and the animals we work with. It’s something that’s just in your bones. I don’t do anything predominantly different from other farmers. “The life we have is a canvas and is something we emotionally invest in. It takes years to build on that. I call it an emotional

canvas. We don’t farm and work — we live on our farm and identify as farmers by what we do, and we do it every day. “A few years ago I took huge issue with the social disconnect between the people of the land and an everdiminishing circle of really proud Kiwi. The politics of the day marginalised one group of New Zealanders against another, and it seemed we had a former Labour government that was disconnected from its rural people. “I maintain that farming is one of the largest export earners of New Zealand and felt that we were left in the dark and treated really poorly. I stood up and was then challenged to stand for office, and I chose to do so, not to become a politician — I stress that point. I desperately love the people I work alongside and wanted to take that authenticity to parliament.” Mark found himself elected as the ACT list MP, and is now a second-

term member of parliament and is in the government. “In 2020, I was computer illiterate and had to learn to send an email, which is quite alright because I’m no longer computer illiterate. It took me about three months to get to grips with the enormity of what I had to do, but by jingo, I’m bloody proud to represent our farmers. “I’m now the chair for the Primary Production Committee, and I am the spokesperson for many other portfolios, including forestry, fisheries and farming, and I am the defence and veterans affairs spokesperson for the ACT party. I am immensely proud and very humbled. “To the wider point, I had one member bill voted down in the previous parliament by the former Labour government. I was the instigator in the resumption of the live animal exports and am hopeful it’ll go through with the current government as it’s now a government bill.

Mark is now a second-term member of parliament and aims to see fun put back in farming for those in the industry

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Mark and his son Brody work as efficiently as possible and operate close to the farm budget

Mark maintains that farming is one of New Zealand’s largest export earners

“It should become law this term under the coalition agreement. It’s important because it’s $400 million of export earnings to a rural sector that was the hardest hit economically based on markets and post-Covid recovery. “Our isolation, higher interest rates and inflationary pressures mean live exports is one way to restore some confidence in the rural sector, both economically and emotionally, to know there is an MP in a party that has their back. “This is one way I can address some of the financial disparities that farming is feeling. I’m very excited that our government is very friendly toward farming and can put pragmatism and common sense back into the conversation, not hyperbole cancellation. “If it doesn’t work on-farm, why in the hell are we doing it? We need to go back

to common sense lawmaking, where the problems are properly defined before solutions are sought politically. “We’re working against the 10-metre waterways fencing. We need to ask what’s the problem by definition and what are the costs. If the costs outweigh the benefits and on-farm solutions cannot be found, the legislators need to revisit that lawmaking. It all comes back to common sense. “The future is optimism and enjoying being on the land. I want to see fun put back into farming. We love being on the land and want to enjoy it again and, where possible, get the government out of the lives of everyday Kiwi so we can get back to doing what we do so well, and that’s farming. “We want to celebrate how darn good we are at what we do.”

Young Farmers prepare

Season 56 of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition is seeing more than 800 contestants across Aotearoa gearing up to prove they have what it takes to be one of New Zealand’s top young farmers. The first contest in a series of regional finals for the year, which attracts a diverse mix of young farmers from across the nation, kicked off in Dunedin earlier this month. New Zealand Young Farmers’ chief executive Lynda Coppersmith says the competition will be fierce, with a series of challenges that could test contestants on any aspect of modern farming across the entire supply chain. “The nationwide event boasts a proud track record of showcasing the very best talent New Zealand’s food and fibre sector has to offer. The title of FMG Young Farmer of the Year is held up as one of the most prestigious farming awards in the country. “One hundred and seventy-two AgriKidsNZ, FMG Junior and FMG Young Farmer contestants have put their names forward to compete in this weekend’s Otago Southland Regional Final. Siblings Laura, Megan and Richard Whyte are among them. “We all do have a competitive side, but we all like to see each other do well. The last time we went head-to-head, I saw my sister learn to shear a sheep. I was pretty proud of her that day,” says 23-yearold Megan. Younger sister Laura says she’ll be using the upcoming competition as an opportunity to learn new skills. “Learning things that you wouldn’t normally learn at home has been

awesome, from vet to breeding to bull-picking modules. It’s always really interesting.” Only the top contestants from each regional final will qualify for a spot at July’s grand final in Hamilton. “This is their opportunity to prove themselves and show the rest of New Zealand they have what it takes to be the best. Considering we’re a nation that prides ourselves on our farming know-

how and expertise, that’s no easy feat,” says Lynda. “Usually, a series of one-day district competitions kickstart the annual contest, but this year’s format looks a little different, with both the district and regional competitions combined into one event. “It means we don’t need to organise 14 separate district competitions, which is a huge weight off our incredible team

of volunteers who support us year in, year out. After this season, we’ll evaluate how it’s all gone with the trial of the new format and make some decisions about the format beyond season 56. “Season 56 is shaping up to be one of our best yet with so many new faces, including a large number of primary students entering our AgriKidsNZ competition. It just goes to show the future of farming is in good hands.”

Council scholarships open

FEbRuARY 2024

Applications for Northland Regional Council’s Tū i te ora Scholarships have opened for 2024, with this year’s recipients set to receive financial assistance and paid work experience at the council next summer. NRC is awarding six scholarships, each including $4,000 to assist with study costs, plus paid full-time work experience with NRC from mid-November 2024 to mid-February 2025. It is the fifth year the council is awarding the scholarships, which recognise, encourage and support students to undertake study that relates to NRC’s environmental and regulatory functions whilst contributing to its vision, ‘Our Northland — together we thrive’. “The work experience opportunity, which was added to the scholarship programme last year, has proven successful for both parties,” says NRC chair Geoff Crawford. “The 2023 recipients are nearing the end of their placements with us, and our teams have appreciated the support and different perspectives they’ve brought to the council. It’s been great to hear how much the scholarship recipients have enjoyed gaining hands-on experience and applying what they’ve learned during their studies to real-life situations. “The council is pleased to be able to offer this opportunity again in 2024. To not only financially support students, but hopefully encourage them to return to council once they’ve completed their studies to enrich the region and its people with their knowledge and skills.” Th e N RC ’s e nvi ro n m e n t a l and regulatory functions include

biodiversity, biosecurity, climate change, environmental planning and policy, environmental science and data analysis, flood and natural hazard engineering and management, geographic information system (GIS), land management and water management. The scholarships have a specific aim to build Māori capacity within Te Tai Tokerau, with three of the six scholarships earmarked for Māori who whakapapa to Te Taitokerau. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who live in Northland (or have family that does) or whakapapa to Te Taitokerau. They must also be enrolled (or have an intention to enrol) in a recognised tertiary course of study that relates to NRC’s environmental and regulatory functions and be studying at an undergraduate or higher qualification level. Applicants must be enrolled (or intend to enrol) for semester one of 2024. Full eligibility criteria and application forms are available from scholarships. nrc.govt.nz. All applications/supporting documentation must be submitted online by Sunday, February 25, 2024. Once the application period closes, a selection panel from the council’s People and Culture, Community Engagement, and Māori Engagement teams will review them. Shortlisted applicants will be subject to an interview.

Woolworths joins sponsor family

NZ Young Farmers has announced its excitement to partner with Woolworths New Zealand as the newest sponsor of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest. NZYF says the collaboration represents a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of food producers within New Zealand’s food and fibre sector. “This is an exciting partnership for Woolworths New Zealand. We were thrilled to see the first-ever female winner last year and want to be part of the buzz of the 2024 FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition,” says NZYF chief executive Lynda Coppersmith. “By partnering with NZYF, Woolworths New Zealand will contribute to the development of skills, knowledge and networks that are essential for success in the ever-evolving agricultural landscape. “We are excited to welcome Woolworths New Zealand into the FMG Young Farmer of the Year sponsor family. This partnership not only highlights their commitment to fostering the development of young farmers but also emphasises the critical role that the next generation plays in securing a sustainable future for our sector.” The FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest has long been a cornerstone in identifying and celebrating the talents of young agricultural enthusiasts. Woolworths New Zealand says it recognises the critical role that young farmers play in ensuring a sustainable future for New Zealand’s food production.

HORTICULTURE BUSINESS PROFILE

Helping others grow Chris and Linda Smith have been running The Grove Supply Co since 2017, stocking specialist gear imported from Europe for growers and producers of fine liquids such as oils or spirits. “We purchased the grove in April 2012 and created Olives on the Hill to take our newly harvested oil to market. I enjoy everything about the grove. I love watching the trees go through their annual growth phases, watching how the pruning and maintenance makes a difference to the trees and their crop,” said Linda. “We loved it so much that when an opportunity arose to purchase a company supplying the olive industry, we jumped at the chance. Its existing customers were mostly olive growers in the north, and it offered essential equipment for olive and other fruit growers.” The Grove Supply Co sells various tools from Spain, Greece, Italy and Slovakia, including deleafi ng, capping, labelling and filling to customers nationwide. “Our stainless steel storage vessels (fusti) are the best on the market. We have everything a grower needs to harvest, filter, and store oils or other liquids. We sell to all manner of businesses and individuals around the country, from olive groves to boutique gin distillers, kombucha makers and people wanting to store honey. “Many bulk food shops use our fusti for dispensing oils and other liquids. HORTICULTURE Planting the waterways

by Liz Clark

Nationwide, the debate over whether or not the fencing and planting of waterways has been a hot topic for several years. With ever-increasing environmental regulations imposed on farmers, the benefits of planting waterways and wetlands outweigh the loss in productivity overall. Using natives locally sourced from your region is a far better option than attempting to plant with exotics, which may block up the waterway as they mature. Planted streams, lakes, dams and wetlands have the potential to provide spawning habitats for native fish, such as īnanga, and vegetative cover for native birds and beneficial pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and other insects. Natives also filter sediment and nitrogen from exposed pastures and stabilise erosion-prone areas. At the same time, riparian zone plantings also improve and maintain water quality. Once established, riparian plants shade the water and lower its temperature, providing stability for native fish, eels and koura that may be inhabiting the ecosystem. The shade also helps prevent the rapid growth of unwanted aquatic weeds and algae, which can clog the flow and deplete the water of oxygen. Free-flowing water increases oxygen diffusion. During dry periods, water will be conserved for far longer periods if shaded.

Native fish, such as īnanga, benefit greatly from riparian planting

In mature plantings, if time is taken to look carefully, there will be a noticeable increase in species biodiversity where each species has a role in the food web connected to the aquatic ecosystem. In turn, each species benefits the other and the plants on the water’s edges. They also

take advantage of the shelter provided by the plant roots to avoid other predators or for use during the day if they are nocturnal. As with forest habitat, riparian areas have what is known as zones. The upper zone only floods sometimes. Drought-tolerant plants such as broadleaf, tōtara, pōhutakawa

and kōwhai are an excellent choice for this area. For the middle zone, plant swamp flax (Phormium tenax), cabbage trees, toetoe, kānuka and mānuka. Then, in the low zone, where it will get flooded, native sedges and rushes, including raupō, are the best species to plant in this area.

Our community has invested heavily in us as well by consistently donating hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to help keep us in the air to improve patient outcomes. our farming community. In 2023, our crews flew 1,015 missions and many flights to rural Northland to help farmers to safety following an array of accidents from ATV rollovers and tractor accidents to injuries from cattle and more. Figures show we completed the following missions: Far North (Kaitaia, Taipa, Mangonui, Karikari, Matai Bay, etc) — 223 flights; Coastal North (Bay of Islands, Kerikeri, Kaeo, Moerewa, Rawhiti, etc) –- 213 flights; HokiangaKaikohe — 116 flights. Coastal Central (Tutukaka Coast, Pataua South, Kauri

Mountain) — 15 flights. Coastal South, including (Mangawhai, Waipu, Kaiwaka, One Tree Point, Maungakaramea, etc) – 37 flights; Whangarei Urban (transfers from Whangarei Hospital, Glenbervie Forest, Parihaka, Limestone Island, etc) — 367 flights. In that period, we also completed 80 flights in Kaipara and 74 flights outside of the region, supporting other rescue helicopter services around the North Island. We are currently working with Whangārei District Council to secure a lease for our future base at the Whangārei District Airport, Onerahi. We will then proceed with detailed planning to build new facilities for our engineers, paramedics, pilots, office staff and rescue helicopters. If there are no more obstacles in moving our operation from Kensington to Onerahi, we hope to be moved in and operational in a reasonable timeline (no promises) for the move might be completed mid to late 2025 — provided no more obstacles present themselves. We are also making good progress on our ambulance team fleet strategy, which includes modernising the fleet and improving aircraft availability in Northland. They are among our top priorities in 2024. Ian MacPherson CEO, Northern Rescue Helicopter Ltd

AG CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS Because they care by Ann van Engelen

Members of the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade will be at the Northland Field Days, showing people some of the activities they are involved in as part of their lives, helping the communities they live in and care for. “I’ve been involved in the brigade for nearly 21 years,” says Dargaville deputy chief fire officer Carl Horscroft. “I joined because I wanted a challenge in life. The fire service is something that a lot of little boys and girls want to be in, so they can drive that big red truck. “After I joined, I found the comradery in the team to be exceptional. It’s a good family environment. We have meals and other social events together. Our teams help people in their time of need. At times, we don’t get the outcome that we want, which is hard on all of us, but it’s good to know we were able to be there for them. “Last week, we flew our flag at half mast in memory of the two volunteer firefighters who lost their lives at a Muriwai call-out last year during Cyclone Gabrielle. “Officers Dave van Zwanenberg and Craig Stevens served their community well. It is very sad to lose members of your team in service. “We work alongside the ambulance staff, police and the Northland Rescue Helicopter who all do an outstanding service.

“We are now under a fire restriction. It all matters.”

The Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade staff look forward to meeting people at the Northland Field Days

“Our training nights are from 7pm–9pm on Mondays at the Dargaville Fire Station. All of our training is hands-on. We have the first Monday of the month off unless we have an activity planned. Males and females are most welcome to join our team. “We will be at the field days along with the paid staff. There will be events and different activities for the children to be involved in. People will be able to learn about fire awareness and safety.

“We are now under a fire restriction in Northland because we have a very dry situation and we are also on level three water restrictions. It all matters. “For more information on joining the Dargaville Fire Service, people can drop into Hunting and Fishing Dargaville and ask for Jason Campbell, our chief fire officer. To check for fire permits, go to the Fire and Emergency website.”

In a Claas of its own

by Andy Bryenton

In sports, a hat trick of three wins is a rare and prestigious achievement, but it’s even more so in the world of technical design, where major agricultural manufacturers compete with multi-million-dollar research budgets. The triple crown of accolades for any tractor encompasses three awards. Firstly, the Tractor of the Year award from Europe’s immense Agritechnica. Secondly, the Farm Machine of the Year award was decided by the discerning judges of the German Deutscher Landwirtschaftsverlag council of farming experts. Finally, the US-based AE50 award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. To claim one of these is a careerdefining victory. To claim all three takes a very special machine indeed. This year, all these top awards went to a single tractor, the Claas Xerion 12 series. “We are delighted about the renowned AE50 Award for our new Xerion 12 series,” said senior vice president of Product Unit System Tractors Dr Johannes Weisbrodt. “After two high-ranking awards at Agritechnica, this award is another great confirmation of our Xerion development team and its years of work, and underlines the innovative approach of the series with numerous features that are unique in this performance class.” That class is undoubtedly heavyweight. The big Xerion has been designed from the ground up to handle the biggest

“This award is another great confirmation of our Xerion development team and its years of work.” The Claas Xerion 12 Series has taken home three of the top awards in global farming

tasks in farming, deployed with either the largest dual tyres available or four tank-like crawler tracks. Spreading the machine’s weight eases the impact on soil and increases the ability of the Xerion to bring its impressive 653 horsepower to bear. There’s also 3,100 Nm of torque on tap, making the Xerion 12 Series a real contender when deploying large, powerintensive implements.

That extreme load capacity is supplemented by an innovative and very strong frame and the inclusion of twin steering axles. This form of steering makes the imposing size of the Xerion 12 surprisingly nimble, and able to navigate tight turns, even when partnered up with very big implements indeed. ‘Despite the immense power and the huge dimensions, the Xerion is, thanks to the

latest generation of the continuously variable CMATIC transmission with four mechanical areas, a very easy-to-use system,’ said the Agritechnica judges in their report. Add to the mix smart, self-learning driver assists, good fuel economy, and even the potential for full automation via Claas Connect, and it’s easy to see why this impressively sized beast of the pasturelands made the grade for a triple gold.

SHEARER ON

THE MOVE

PART TWO

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN This month we read part two of Shanelle Kemp’s story, growing up in Kaipara as a fifth-generation shearer who now focusses on shearing for lifestyle block owners.

rom eight months old, I would go to work with my dad Martyn when he was shearing,” says Shanelle. Shanelle says keeping an eye on her — her dad would place her in her pack on a hook while he worked. “I often fell asleep watching them work, and when they stopped, I’d wake up. I think the noise lulled me. My great-greatgrandfather was the first person in our family to get into the industry here in Kaipara. “When I was 15 years old, I crutched 900 sheep. That was my prime years of fitness — you don’t feel the pain at that age. Now I shear a comfortable 230 in an eight-hour day. I can also do drenching, nail clipping, flystrike, ear tagging, vaccinating and docking. It means the owners don’t have to worry themselves. I encourage checking over animals every six to eight weeks or monthly, depending on the owner’s level of knowledge.”

Shanelle and her partner Danny enjoy the lifestyle they have created with their sons Riley and Austin

Shanelle passes on animal care information to educate new owners. “Some don’t realise sheep need shearing. I’m considering creating a few tutorial videos so people can see what to do, especially those who are new to owning animals. “I’ve been to a few shows, but I’m more a behind-the-scenes shearer. I competed at the Mangawhai Tavern Speed Shear, one year. That was a really good experience, but I definitely didn’t have a shot, especially with all the big

guns. It was a great experience, and I met my favourite shearer, David Fagen. He was brilliant to watch. “Danny and I have been together for 13 years and have two boys, Austin and Riley. Our family is our priority, and they are enrolled in soccer and swimming, so what I do fits in well with our lifestyle.” When clients want to learn the basics of shearing their own flock and save money, Shanelle encourages them to attend a shearing school.

Being a fifth-generation shearer, Shanelle has learned everything about the industry from her father Martyn

“Courses teach you the proper technique of standing, holding your feet correctly and other important aspects. They often realise how hard it is, physically and mentally, and decide to leave it to us. Some days are easier as it’s a mental game, and you have to be in the zone and prepared. “It’s important to shear sheep twice a year, usually starting in October, to beat the summer heat and stop the flies laying eggs, which only take a couple of hours to hatch. Fly strike is when the maggots start feeding on the animal’s flesh, especially if it’s moist. “Depending on how long their fleece is, you start shearing lambs from three months old. I feel crutching around the bum isn’t enough when they’re carrying weight. Shearing before winter and lambing means they’re comfortable, cleaner and not carrying a heavy fleece. “Dad is my idol — he taught me everything I know about the industry.

He met my mum, Nikola, in the shearing sheds as well. She was a shed hand and cook. They raised me and moulded me into a worker and shearer. “My dad’s parents owned a shearing run around Northland and Taihape. I’m hoping one of my sons will take it on and be the sixth generation. Dad has travelled overseas to Australia and England for the job, and we spent two months in Western Australia shearing too. “When our whānau get together, we share stories of the good times we’ve had and reminisce about the old days. Dad and I still help each other when we can. We’re used to working on our own, but it’s fun together. You definitely get through jobs quicker. “It all started with my great-greatgrandfather, who was brought up in Kaipara, too. If it wasn’t for my family being in the shearing sheds for four generations, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

ADVERTORIAL

Evolution of an iconic animal by Andy Bryenton

When most people think of Bobcat, the machine that comes to mind is the tough, versatile little skid-steer that pioneered the brand name and made it the definition of a compact loader. However, there was a time when the world couldn’t turn to a Bobcat to move earth, shift rubble, load feed or navigate difficult work sites. That was a problem for Turkey farmer Eddie Velo of Minnesota but an opportunity for welders and fabricators Louis and Cyril Keller. When Eddie told the brothers that his industry needed a machine that could work as hard as a big loader but manoeuvre within the confines of a barn, they got to planning. With a few tweaks and innovations, the skid-steer loader we know and love today came to fruition, with the instantly recognisable M400 model paving the way in 1960. The Bobcat name, now so instantly recognisable, came along two years later. The compact and indomitable bobcat of the Minnesota woods provided a mascot that wrapped up everything farmers needed to know about the range of revolutionary skid-steer loaders. With the Bobcat loader and its immense collection of attachments and implements conquering markets worldwide, its six decades of success have given rise to a wider Bobcat range, which is equally impressive. Having filled one vital niche in farming, all the way back in the 1960s, Bobcat is a company that continues to innovate. It offers tractors, mowers, telehandlers and excavators enjoying the same level of tough and tested engineering as their

iconic skid-steers. Agriline has brought the pick of this crop to New Zealand. There’s a reason why every skid steer loader gets colloquially called a Bobcat. A legacy of quality and smart engineering flows through to the range of compact 26hp to 55hp tractors you’ll find at their showrooms and Northland Field Days. Packed with features which are often optional extras on other tractors in this class, they are, of course, consummate masters of front-end loader work but also shine when it’s time to slash, mow, till and backhoe, among a host of other farming tasks. Add in a selection of industry-leading telehandlers who combine a tight turning

circle with maximum reach and dexterity, and there’s a very good reason to think beyond the tough little skid-steer when you think of the Bobcat brand. Come

Northlander wins fastest shear

Northland shearer Toa Henderson has carried out a Southern raid in the industry’s sports competition travelling over six hours to win the Taihape Shearing Sports Open Final with possibly its fastestever time and then drove home again.

He and his father, Mike, left Kaiwaka at 4.30am to make sure they arrived more than 550km away in time for the open-class heats starting in Taihape soon after 1pm. One of 44 starters in the glamour grade amid what is thought to have been a record entry of more than 200 competitors across the shearing and woolhandling classes, Henderson made his way through the heats and the semifinals to the six-man final, where he dealt with the six second-shear sheep in 15min 23sec. When he finished, all five others had more than one sheep still to shear, and he was 56 seconds quicker than the next man off, Hemi Braddick, of Eketahuna. Judges ruled it was the fastest of the times on record for a 20-sheep final at the central North Island State Highway One show. Taihape Shearing Sports chairman Stu Munro said the number of competitors was “overwhelming” for a one-day event, being the first major gathering of

competitors from throughout the North Island in a five-week run-up to the threeday Golden Shears in Masterton. Henderson’s quality points suffered a little, and he had the highest number of penalties in both board and pen judging. The time advantage was enough to hold out Braddick, who had to settle for second place for the second year in a row. The winning margin closed to just 0.8pts, while Braddick claimed the second ribbon by 0.65pts from third-placed Jack Fagan, of Te Kuiti. Former world woolhandling teams title winner Keryn Herbert won the Taihape Open woolhandling title for the eighth time, having previously won five times consecutively in 2011–2015 and back-to-back in 2020–2021. In-form competitor Te Ua Wilcox of Gisborne had his fifth senior shearing win of the season, but the intermediate and junior finals were dominated by an influx of young shearers from overseas.

FORESTRY & LOGGING

by Ann van Engelen

Monitoring makes a difference

The Bream Bay Community Rivers Community Project team says understanding waterways goes beyond science — it’s essential for restoring and protecting the health of our streams, with one of the first steps being monitoring. “This process helps us to develop practical action plans for the restoration, enhancement and protection of our freshwater resources,” says catchment coordinator Graham Matthews. “At the Waionehu catchment, we have monitored two sites about four kilometres

apart. One downstream at McLean Bridge and another upstream on Lloyd Cullen’s property in Waipū. “We rely on Stream Health Monitoring and Assessment Kits, developed by NIWA in partnership with Federated Farmers. It’s a game changer for local community groups and landowners for monitoring water quality and stream life. “Our exploration begins by analysing the physical features of the catchment, such as water temperature and clarity. Using a clarity tube, we measure water murkiness, providing insights into the quantity of suspended particles in the water. “Moving on, our focus shifts to the flora and fauna inhabiting this aquatic habitat. Estimating fish species becomes an intriguing task as traps are strategically set along the stream overnight. On retrieving the traps the next day, our team discovered a shrimp, an eel and a bully — a testament to the richness of this ecosystem.

Graham Matthews and the Bream Bay Rivers Community Project team monitoring and protecting the health of freshwater resources

“We don’t overlook the chemical aspects of the catchment.” Nitrate, phosphate and E coli take centre stage. Nitrate, sourced from fertilisers and animal waste, and phosphate, often linked to soil erosion, can stimulate excessive plant and algae growth, impacting aquatic life. “Using a colorimetric method, we measure nitrate levels while the phosphate checker or colorimeter reveals phosphate concentrations. E coli, a bacterium found in warm-blooded animal intestines, is the indicator for faecal contamination, measured in colony-forming units (cfu) per 100mL of sample water. “At two properties recently, one upstream and one downstream, we noticed a 1.5C difference between upstream (15.9C) and downstream (17.4C) water sampling, showcasing the importance of shading to maintain lower temperatures.

“In New Zealand, maintaining temperatures below 22C is essential for the survival of macroinvertebrates, and exceeding 30C poses a threat to various aquatic species. Beyond influencing the types of species present, water temperature affects oxygen levels, the sensitivity of aquatic animals to toxins and diseases, and the rate of chemical reactions and biological processes. “Our monthly sampling strategy helps us identify patterns, supporting our mission to safeguard and enhance catchment health. The exploration extends to three other catchments in Waipū, the Waihoihoi, Ahuroa and Pohuenui, helping us to do a comparative analysis of river health. “By building a database of our streams’ quality, we identify sources of problems and invite everyone onboard through our catchment groups to act and implement sustainable land use practices.”

Women’s coveted title

Now in its 13th season, the Dairy Women’s Network’s Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year Award applications or nominations are set to close on Thursday, February 29. “Not only does the Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year recipient achieve the coveted title, but this year they will also receive a scholarship to the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme,” said DWN chief executive Jules Benton. “I encourage our dairy women to put themselves forward for the Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year award. You can either be nominated or apply yourself. “This award, with the Kellogg Rural Leadership opportunity, which includes the programme fee, travel, accommodation, mentoring and access to DWN and Fonterra platforms to share their research, goes a small way to recognising the efforts of our amazing dairy women.” Those who have been through the Kellogg’s programme call it life-changing. Vanessa Thomson, who recently graduated from the programme, shares her insights. Vanessa is a working mum with a young family, who sharemilks with her husband on two farms in the Waikato. She is also an ex-lawyer and is currently the contract manager for DairyNZ. “I was looking for a new challenge that could develop my networks both professionally and personally across the sector,” said Vanessa. “The programme has equipped me with a deeper understanding of myself and gave me an amazing range of

practical leadership tools. I’m a working mum from rural New Zealand. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it opened my world up again after a period of being in the trenches with a young family, juggling work and farm life.” Through Kellogg, she has made enduring connections with the members of her cohort, who hailed from a range of different sectors. She feels excited to think that her cohort will be part of leading and guiding the sector into a bright future. Donna Cram received the 2023 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year Award. She used some of the scholarship to attend the Rural Leaders Value Chain Innovation Programme. “The programme was incredible, and I’m still buzzing — even months later. I was one of 13 participants who took part in an extensive regional tour, travelling with Professor Hamish Gow and Phil Morrison, exploring four value chains: apple, kiwi fruit, dairy and red meat,” said Donna. “We learnt as much from each other, especially through the deep, insightful and very honest bus and evening meal conversations, as from the rural leaders who welcomed them into their businesses.” To apply or nominate, go to dwn.co.nz/ fonterra-dairy-woman-of-the-year-2024nomination-form.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

DAIRY & EFFLUENT

See you at the field days by Colin Hannah, Northland Federated Farmers president

The Northland Federated Farmers team is looking forward to catching up with urban and rural folk at the field days. We’re keen to let people know what we’ve been up to on behalf of rural Northlanders over the past year. One of the most critical pieces of work we’ve been undertaking is understanding the heavily detrimental impacts of the Northland Regional Council’s Draft Fresh Water Plan change. It’s a shocker and could cost the region hundreds of millions of dollars annually while forcing farmers off their land. I urge everyone in Northland with rural land to submit strong opposition to the plan by going to wai-it-matters.nz or

emailing freshwater@nrc.govt.nz. Please do so well before the feedback deadline of March 31 2024. You can also post your submission to Northland Regional Council, Private Bag 9021, Te Mai, Whangārei, 0143. Please come and talk to our team at the Northland Field Days and find out more about what the NRC has in store for farmers if it gets its way with this unjust and impractical plan. People often ask me what Northland Federated Farmers do, and my answer is — “a lot”. I’m supported by one of the best executive teams I’ve ever worked with in my lengthy career, and I’ve worked in some big corporate global companies. What people don’t realise is that we all do what we do because we care deeply about our community — we do it voluntarily. In fact, most of the work we do is behind the scenes for the good of all rural Northlanders — not just Federated Farmer members. Much like the work of our world-class air ambulance, the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service, who we support to the hilt because they have the back of every Northlander, visitors to our beautiful region and folk offshore who need urgent extraction from vessels. They go about their work quietly and calmly. They get the job done, and they do it for us. They don’t seek accolades. They just do what is right

and ethical for people and that’s the way we at Northland Federated Farmers operate, too. That’s why we are proud to once again host our rescue chopper family at our field days stand because they’re the ones there to pick up the pieces, mop up our trauma and give us the best possible outcome in what may be

the worst day of our life due to injury, accident or illness. They don’t judge. They’re there for us 24/7, and the skill level of their engineers, pilots and paramedics is second to none. They take nothing for chance and never have since their first flight in the late 1980s. On behalf of the entire rural sector, we thank them.
