Meagan Walters, Northland Field Days event coordinator
Hundreds of exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in farming innovations. Farmers, growers and lifestyle block owners will be able to take the opportunity to ask questions and gather information. There will be a wide range of food and entertainment for the whole family. “We are so pleased that the majority of our exhibitors from 2020 are returning for 2021. We also have plenty of new exhibitors coming as well,” says event coordinator Meagan Walters. “Some businesses have not been able to recover from the effects of Covid-19 so will not be attending, but we hope that in time, they will rebuild their businesses and return to the field days. “We have worked hard to get new entertainment and demonstrations to create more of a buzz. We want to assure the general public that we have got some awesome exhibitors coming along. “People are encouraged to join us at the largest annual agricultural event in Northland. “Each of our three food courts will have a wide variety of food and coffee vendors to tempt taste buds. Our Market
Area has 20 confirmed exhibitors at present, and more are expected to book in. We are excited that Chelsea Marriner of Ultimate K9s will be demonstrating her amazing dog training skills with two demos per day. We will also have a pipe band on show, and the Clydesdales are returning to ferry people around the event. “There will be Stronghold Cutting Horse Demonstrations, daily BBQ demonstrations with BBQ experts showing off their skills and Caro’s Crazy Critters Animal Farm, which is always a huge hit with everyone, young and the not-so-young. “MoreFM will be here and running an on-site competition called Farm and Go Seek with cash prizes to be won. Guitar heroes can have fun at the Guitar Hero Challenge on The Rock’s site (A8) and also be in to win awesome prizes.” Covid-19 tracer posters are up all across the site. Every exhibitor is required to have a hand sanitising station set up for anyone who wishes to use it. For more information, check out the Northland Field Days Facebook page or Northlandfielddays.co.nz.

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Wildfire prevention campaign
January 2021
Understanding fire risk conditions are now clearer and simpler, thanks to a new online tool launched recently by the minister in charge of Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Internal Affairs. “Last summer, wildfires destroyed over 10,000 hectares of native bird habitat. No one wants their property destroyed or their life disrupted by fire, but many of us don’t realise just how risky some common activities are,” says Minister Jan Tinetti. The new mobile-friendly tool on the Fire and Emergency’s checkitsalright. nz website makes it easier for people to understand fire danger conditions across the country. It helps make informed decisions about lighting outdoor fires this summer. “New Zealanders can check local fire danger and fire season status, and get clear guidance on whether they need a permit to light a fire or not. The tool is part of the Fire and Emergency’s Summer Wildfire Prevention Campaign, which uses native birds as ambassadors to illustrate the wildlife at stake with wildfires. Climate change means that fires present a growing threat to
communities here and overseas. As we enter a hot, dry summer, it is important people understand the risks and act accordingly. “This year, the wildfire season has started earlier. We have already had two significant fires, with 3,500 hectares devastated at Aoraki/Mt Cook and 5,000 hectares with 48 buildings, melted water tanks, and destroyed power and water systems at Lake Ohau. “In New Zealand, 99 per cent of wildfires are started by people — it only takes a spark. Our actions make all the difference, especially when the fire danger is heightened over summer. “Fire and Emergency New Zealand wants fire risks to be front of mind for everyone thinking of lighting fires or undertaking spark generating activities this summer.” Before lighting any kind of fire, check the local fire danger at checkitsalright.nz.

Recognising
NATIVE TREASU RES BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Brett Sutherland is a wood carving artist with a vision to use native timber to remind us of the natural treasures we have and have had around us.
“W
hen I was 16 years old I started bone carving and ended up travelling the world carving miniature compact sculptures called Netsuke. I was living in St Martin on my catamaran that I built in Brazil and became known as the bone carver of the Caribbean,” says Brett. “I took up the art of tattooing as well. I returned home to be with my family as my mum became ill and I built one of the first tiny homes in her driveway. Since then I have been making
costumes, armour and helmets for the film industry.” Brett is also a Zoologist and recently completed his first full-sized totem pole of six coastal native birds relevant to the Kaipara area, carved from a totara log. “The coastal native birds are the fairy tern, kingfisher, oystercatcher, white-faced heron, pied shag and the spoonbill. I fell in love with totem poles when I was living in British Columbia, staying with carvers on reservations. I was totally drawn to their stories,
designs, what they represent and why, and knew I would carve my own totem.
“I took up the art of tattooing as well” “My nine bird pole has three common at top, three endangered and three extinct. Other sets include eight
commonly seen native birds, eight endangered native bird species and eight extinct New Zealand native birds. “Full-size sculptures are educational, interactive and represent what is important. I see our birds as the most treasured taonga that we have and want to design totems with specific birds for all areas of New Zealand. “I started during the first lockdown and was very happy carving all day. To begin I carve a miniature pole called a maquette which takes up to 50 hours.

Carving totem poles of endangered, extinct and common birds from native timber has become Brett’s passion The large totem took me some 400 hours to create. “Once I have made the maquette I pull the bark off the large log and set it up on stands. I draw the plan on the wood and use a chainsaw for the first cuts. It is then all chisel work and no sandpaper. Each piece is finished with oil to protect the wood. “The Native Americans have a ceremony for each pole raised. They say once raised the totem pole takes on a spirit and becomes alive. When it eventually falls they leave it, as that is what the pole wants to do. Some stand for 100 years before falling over.” Brett believes our most treasured thing as humans is genetics and that we need sculptures that are understood to remind us of life. “Genetics mean life and there is nothing more important in my view
than what is seen around us, what is not commonly seen and that which has gone before us such as moa. People see the sculptures and say wouldn’t it be amazing if we saw them walking around. “I am a self-taught carver because at school my teacher was uninterested in helping me. “The biggest honour I have had in recognition of my carving was master carver Fred LeGar offering me to attend the carving school in Whakatane. That is a rare offer for someone like myself but I was returning overseas at the time. “Everybody has something they are good at with natural ability. We are all artists. If you are a writer, or good at making food, you are an artist. No one in my family knew anything about carving so I had no support. I think Maori people are lucky as they often have the cultural opportunity to learn.

Achieving with Ayrshire by Ann van Engelen Victoria Loeffen moved with her family to a dairy farm in 2017, where she discovered a wide variety of opportunities living in the rural environment.
“I
grew up on a lifestyle block and have always been around animals. When we moved to the farm, I was introduced to cattle showing,” says Victoria. “We have a small farm with 130 purebred Ayrshire cattle in Kaipara. It is mostly grass-fed, and we have two paddocks, which we produce silage from. I go to boarding school, but I help on-farm as much as possible when I am home. I help with pest control, such as

I enjoy spending time with them, so they are used to people. This helps them to be good in the milking shed when they are older. Showing helps people to develop relationships with other farmers and the animals they own. “Mum has a huge pile of ribbons, as does my grandfather and grandmother. Mum encourages me too and gives me tips and advice like how to work with the halters. “Grandad makes rope halters for training, and mum taught me how to hold an animal and make it stand out by the way it holds itself. Soon we will be in the On Farm Challenge where the judges come and rate the animal for competing. Everyone around me, including the neighbours, have been super supportive. They are always helpful and kind and give me information and advice on how to do things easier, when various shows are on and what to do better. “Even knowing how to put covers on the calves to quiet them down for training and when to give them hay and meal on show day is all relevant information. The community is really inclusive and encourages young people to get involved now to keep the events and competitions happening. “Ayrshires are good milkers, but they don’t have the high-fat content like Jersey. They are in between Jersey and Friesians as a breed. They originate from Scotland and are a really hardy New Zealand kind of animal. They produce a reasonable volume of good-quality milk and are good calvers. “We put our heifers in calf to Jersey bulls to try and ensure there are no first time birthing issues as the Jersey produces smaller calves. light boned and skinnier. We finish the older cows with Polled Hereford bulls if they don’t get in calf to AB. Polled Herefords calve easy and sell really well which is important as we don’t keep beef stock on our farm. We just keep our dairy animals.” Victoria also became a member of the Ayrshire Association to connect with other breeders. “I highly recommend others get involved in breeding Associations and events. Last season I received lots of ribbons including Reserve Champion for Calf Club and other awards, including the trophy for Best Young Person. At
RAS youth competitions you collect points for various activities including attending shows, judging and making a dairy exhibit. I earned the most points overall and the Young Achievers’ award for the RAS Northern District. “Raising your cattle from young means they are easy to work with. There are lots of resources online, and the RAS or breed society Facebook pages
are good places to get information. Eventing is not hard. It is a really nice atmosphere and very inclusive. “Getting involved at a young age makes working with cattle easier. Knowing you trained the animal and developed the connection to it, even if you don’t get a single ribbon, it is worth the sense of achievement you get.”

Farming with many talents by Ann van Engelen Tania Cresswell manages her parents’ 55-hectare dairy farm, has artificially inseminated more than 25,000 dairy cows and is often seen on the car-racing circuit.
T
he 29-year-old milks 160 cows and is the third generation from her family to farm the property. “We have 10 hectares of flats, and the remainder of the land is hilly. It was bought by my grandparents Bob and Gladys Cresswell in 1950, and I now manage it for my parents Keith and Gayle,” says Tania. “Our herd is predominantly Holstein Friesian, and the farm produced 52,000 kilograms of milksolids in the 2019–20 season, which was about 10,000 kgMS less than normal. The farm’s best production has been 65,000kgMS. “I jump onto my two-wheeler motorbike every morning by 4am and bring the cows to the 14-aside milking shed. An easy-going temperament is
one of the main traits I strive for in a cow. I work alone a lot of the time, so having a docile animal is crucial. “I also give the cows minerals in the shed, things like magnesium and iodine. Quiet cows are easier to drench. During milking, I work my way down the pit, changing clusters and identifying cows to draft for artificial insemination. “I have been an AI technician for 10 years and did my training with LIC in 2011. “After a month working as an apprentice, I was given my own AI run. It is a really rewarding job. During the season it is a daily race against the clock to get my farm jobs done and be on the road by 7.15am and cover approximately 12 dairy farms each day.
Watching the New Zealand Rally Championship race past the family property sparked an interest in the sport and Tania is now a co-driver

NORTHERN FarMInG LIFESTyLES
“Mating is one of the busiest times of the year, and people can often get stuck in their farm bubbles for long periods. The aspect I enjoy the most is getting out and talking to other farmers. “If the grass isn’t growing and feed is in short supply, it is nice to be able to let farmers know others are in a similar situation. The biggest farm on my run milks about 700 cows. When they synchronise a large number of cows to come on heat together, I have to inseminate 120 cows in one visit. That can take up to two hours.” According to LIC, Tania has inseminated 25,611 cows since she started as an AI technician. That is approximately 2,561 inseminations a year. “I usually get home at 11am at the earliest from my AI run. After a quick bite to eat, I head back out on the farm to do my chores. We tend to say we have mountain cows rather than just plain dairy cows. “The prolonged drought had a big impact on grass growth and milk production last season. “I ended up switching to once-a-day milking at the start of March, which isn’t something we had done before I had to dry off, or stop milking the cows, on May 6 last year, three weeks earlier than usual. “The farm was the driest it has been in living memory. Going once-a-day helped the cows hold some of their condition. Milk production on the property usually averages 380–400kgMS per cow. We don’t do any summer cropping. We rely

“We purchased a neighbouring 42-hectare block in 2009, and we winter the herd there.” Cows and genetics is not Tania’s only hobby. She is often found in the front seat of a rally car on gravel roads, racing at speeds of more than 200 kilometres an hour as a co-driver for Ashburton drystock farmer Wayne Muckle. “I am a

No doubt during the Christmas-New Year period you will have been reflecting on a crazy past 12 months, as I certainly have been. Hopefully, we’re in for a bit less rough a ride. Among all the significant political and real-world events of last year was a declaration of a climate change emergency by the government. No one disputes the importance of our natural environment, so it was fair enough as far as it went. There was a healthy degree of scepticism, however, about the value of merely stating the existence of a problem where such statements are not accompanied by much meaningful action to solve the problem. While it’s right to be cynical about the value of emergency declarations made merely for the sake of appearance, therefore, I am thinking about issuing a declaration of ‘traffic emergency’ for our area. Simply put, the situation on our roads has become intolerable. There are major implications for quality of life, where parents spend hours travelling that they
2
could be spending raising their kids and so on. There is a huge effect on our productivity too, given how much time we spend driving that we could better spend making or doing things. Moreover, of course, the most important implication is the danger to life and limb that we encounter daily, just getting from A to B. For all these reasons, I intend to announce early in 2021 that a state of emergency exists in Auckland’s west, northwest and rural north where traffic is concerned. I will be proposing a number of specific measures to address this issue, bearing in mind my own injunction against vague virtuesignalling, and hoping that the central and local government decision-makers get onboard. The powers that be need to know what’s needed (although they’ve been told many times before, it should be noted) and I’ll keep doing my job of letting them know all about it. Please join me in demanding better out here. After all, it’s an emergency.

Supporting Rural Support Trust
Wishbone Pet Food has partnered with Rural Support Trust to help New Zealand farmers through sales of their most recent product, especially formulated for working dogs. Wishbone Gold is the first New Zealand-made pet food using New Zealand ingredients for the country’s working dogs. The family-run company is donating $5 for every bag sold of Wishbone Gold, their newest pet food specially made for working dogs. Chairperson for the Rural Trust, Neil Bateup is thankful for Wishbone Gold’s support. “Rural Support is a not-for-profit organisation, so we are incredibly grateful for the support of Wishbone Gold. It is a great partnership — just like a farmer with his dogs. Funds raised from the sale of bags can be utilised across rural New Zealand to help make a difference,” said Mr Bateup. “Rural Trust is made up of farmers supporting farmers, and we are available right across the country. Having dog food like this is important because just like we need to keep our teams fit, and look after our people, our dogs are also a big part of our team on-farm. “Deemed as the heart of New Zealand farms, working dogs make a huge contribution to a farmer’s success. They work in all weathers, running from 60 to 100 kilometres a day, often at the speed of 20 to 30 kilometres an hour, to guard and herd sheep and cattle.” To keep dogs’ hearts healthy, Wishbone Gold is formulated with taurine, an amino acid that aids in heart function. Each 20kg bag is made with 100 per cent free-range New Zealand beef and lamb for strong muscles

Mowing with the best in the bay by Andy Bryenton
You can see a long way from the top of the hill in Mangonui, and at this time of year, it’s a sea of green. This vantage spot has been home for 20 years to Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws, the team who keep back yards looking ship-shape from Doubtless Bay all the way through to Te Paki and Kerikeri.
Husqvarna roll out the best in lawn tractors for summer — get a closer look at Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws
The small-engine specialists are also prime providers of water-related storage, reticulation, treatment and filtration. It’s a service in big demand as we head for a hot summer. As horticulture is a major economic driver in the region, the Mangonui Mowers and Chainsaws team go beyond the usual range of brush cutters and hedge trimmers, ride-ons and leaf blowers to bring specialised tools and machines to the local orchardists, vintners and cultivators of crops. However, it’s the green growth of spring, which is up for the chop right now, and two decades of experience await customers looking to find the best
fit for their lawn. The Mangonui team’s expertise in lawn, garden and lifestyle block care means that they command a big range of top names in the field, but perhaps pre-eminent among these is the world’s biggest; Husqvarna. Husqvarna’s ride-on lawn tractors are in focus, with price reductions across the range. That means it’s a good time to compare the features and benefits of Husqvarna against the rest and add up the value you receive for your dollar on these well-engineered and durable European machines. For slightly more than $4,000 right now you can take home the Husqvarna

FEES-FREE ONLINE TRAINING WORKS FOR NATALIE Mother-of-two Natalie Moon works part time on reception at Kensington Fitness and this year took up studying to progress her career prospects. She was sent an email from a colleague advertising NorthTec’s New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) and said: “The fact that it was free appealed to me, because I didn’t think that I would have been in a position financially to take on study for at least a year.” She also liked the fact that it was an online programme, as it allowed her to set her study time around her family. Natalie was surprised by the scope of the modules that were covered, especially human anatomy. She found that learning about the fitness industry was a huge benefit, with the course teaching all the legal requirements of becoming a personal trainer and also covering marketing. The NorthTec tutors were really supportive, Natalie said: “They were always interested to see how I was going. Often I would get an ‘Awesome work!’ on an assignment or
something that was really positive - and when you were having a bad day, wondering if you were going to get it done, it just gave you such a boost.” Natalie is already benefiting from the study she has undertaken as she has now been offered a casual position in the fitness sector. She would like to work her way up to her own personal training business, starting by creating a “walking bus” in Tikipunga to motivate others. She said: “I think people should just have a go and then they might surprise themselves, because it wasn’t really something that I had considered yet - but because it was free I just thought oh gosh, you know, maybe I could do this.” Natalie is now loving being able to provide practical help to clients. She said: “From the fourth week of my course to the end, my client’s goal was to hike up quite a reasonable-sized mountain, and she had health issues. She wasn’t sure if she could do it and then she picked up a couple of injuries but because she stuck to what she was doing and followed my programme, she managed to complete the hike.
p: 0800 162 100 e: study@northtec.ac.nz www.northtec.ac.nz
“The day before she was really nervous, but that was the day that we retested so she saw all of her results against where she was when she started, and she had progressed so much in all areas it was fantastic. So that just gave her the boost I think she needed to complete that hike, so that was really cool, very exciting to see that you’ve helped somebody achieve something, you know, very fulfilling.” * The New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) is not fees-free in 2021. ADVERTORIAL
Achieving consistent cropping by Erica Faber, Technical Manager, Just Avocados
Most Just Avocados growers completed their first pick by December 2020, and many have now fully completed their harvest. That is important for consistent yearon-year cropping as the resources can be primarily directed to the current setting and developing 2021–22 crop without the added strain of late hanging fruit. Fruit set is a stressful time for avocado trees due to the high demand and competition for resources between the current crop, the setting fruit, the spring vegetative flush and the root flush. An avocado tree only has so many resources to go around. When holding a significant amount of crop late, the new fruit set or spring flush is often compromised. Inadequate carbohydrate reserves or nutrient resources to the fruitlets results in either poorer fruit set or higher fruitlet drop. If left unchecked, a cycle can perpetuate where resources get exhausted one year and then build up again the next in an ‘off-year’ only to over-flower again the next year. It is primarily the cause of irregular bearing. The challenge is to balance the resource needs of all these growth cycles to ensure optimal tree health and consistently high yields. Managing the basics can help to achieve this: • Ensure adequate and balanced nutrition with a combination of solid and foliar fertilisers. However, avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser during fruit
set as this can result in an increase in fruitlet drop. • Any water stress during fruit set results in higher fruitlet drop and consequently lower production. Although our rainfall is high, we unfortunately often have dry periods during the critical time of fruit set. A water deficit during this critical time of rapid cell division will also result in smaller fruit. Irrigation is a worthwhile investment to ensure not only larger fruit but also larger crops. • A regular pruning programme will ensure adequate light into the canopy, which in turn, results in improved production with a more even crop load on the entire tree and not just predominantly the top or the periphery. It also results in better bud quality and higher fruit set as well as a balance between vegetative and productive wood, which will prevent excessive or over-flowering. • Manage your crop load and carefully consider your harvest strategy. A heavy or late hanging crop will compromise next season’s production as well as decline poor health trees even further. If you would like assistance with your orchard management programme, please talk to the team at Just Avocados justavocados.co.nz.

Helping save bees
Training detector dogs to sniff out the highly infectious bacterial disease American Foulbrood (AFB) in beehives could save New Zealand’s beekeeping industry several million dollars a year. The Ministry for Primary Industries is contributing $50,000 through Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures towards the one-year, $95,000 project. The project aims to develop a scientific methodology for training detection dogs to reliably detect AFB by creating a ‘scent picture’ of the disease. It is led by DownUnder Honey, in partnership with Pete Gifford from K9 Search Medical Detection Training Centre and Massey University researchers. “A big part of the project is trying to come up with a pure form of the disease that can be grown in the lab, with no possibility of other scents in the mix,” says Jason Prior, owner of DownUnder Honey. “This will be introduced to the dogs through a clinically sterile environment. It is not the first time dogs have been used to detect AFB, but previous methods have led to inconclusive results in the field. “When bees have AFB they often have other diseases. Previously dogs were trained on infected colonies without isolating the target scent. This project aims to overcome this issue and produce more reliable detection dogs. The new training will focus on detecting actual AFB spores and other relevant AFB bacteria that have come directly from a laboratory.” Overseas, AFB has been managed through the use of antibiotics, but the disease has developed resistance over time. the disease through destruction of hives and hive equipment, which has a significant cost to industry. New Zealand’s apiculture industry currently pays more than $2 million in annual levies for beehive inspections. “There are almost a million beehives registered in New Zealand, but we are only physically inspecting around 4,000 hives a year. Unless we get some new tools like dogs to rapidly find the disease, it gets more and more expensive to find that last five per cent of the disease out there.” The industry’s ultimate goal is to eradicate AFB, which would be a world first. Dogs can inspect an apiary of 20 hives within two minutes, whereas an inspector could take at least 90 minutes.

Dogs can also be used to inspect stored equipment, allowing other sources of infection to be identified and destroyed. MPI Director Investment Programmes, Steve Penno, says this project could be a gamechanger for New Zealand’s apiculture industry. “Being able to detect the disease early would reduce lost production and the need to destroy hives. If successful, we would be the first country in the world to use dogs to detect AFB. The detector dogs could be commercially available to farmers as a service.” The project is also supported by the Southern North Island Beekeeping Group and the Honey Industry Trust, which have contributed funding and will help with fieldwork.

It will be achieved through cultural health monitoring, fencing, planting and predator monitoring. “From the high-country slopes in Canterbury to sensitive wetlands in the Nelson region, rivers in Northland, Taranaki, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and Otago — this funding will help our freshwater systems right across the country,” said Minister Parker. Dairy award nominations open
Nominations to a national award that flushes out dairy farmers who demonstrate innovation and passion in their approach to sustainable dairying are open until March 20. The Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award was introduced by the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards. The awards are to recognise those dairy farmers who are respected by their farming peers and their community for their attitude and role in sustainable dairying. The 2021 Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award farmer could come from any of New Zealand’s milk suppliers and any farmer or farming partnership that demonstrates a high calibre of performance and leadership in the areas of responsible and sustainable care of people, animals, ecosystems and communities. “We have excellent, experienced dairy farmers creating and working on wonderful projects that have a positive effect on the environment. We want to hear about the people who are farming responsibly, both environmentally and socially, and showcasing excellence on a daily basis. “This is a chance for people to nominate their neighbour, their employer or someone in their community. This award gives us the opportunity to recognise farmers that have progressed to ownership, demonstrate leadership in their farming practices and are a role model for our younger farmers coming through. The 11 regions are buzzing with 366 entries received for the 2021

Hawke’s Bay/Wairarapa farmers Nick and Nicky Dawson won the 2020 Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award and received the John Wilson Memorial Trophy. “The Dawsons impressed the panel of judges with their genuine commitment and passion. We hear about succession being about family, however, Nick and 7
Nicky spoke about succession for the whole industry and dairy farming in New Zealand.” The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards are supported by national sponsors Westpac, DeLaval, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Honda, LIC, Meridian Energy and Ravensdown, along with industry partner DairyNZ. Nomination forms are available at dairyindustryawards.co.nz, with entries closing March 20. Three finalists will be selected and interviewed by a panel of judges at the National Final to be held in Hamilton next year with the winner announced at the awards dinner on May 15 2021.

Be sun and tsunami ready
January 2021

Minister for Emergency Management Kiri Allan is reminding all New Zealanders to be tsunami ready during summer and the holiday break. “New Zealand’s entire coastline is at risk of a tsunami, that means most of us live near or visit places that are at risk,” said Minister Allan. “When you are hitting the beach, it is important that you are tsunami ready as well as sun smart. Remember the ‘Long or Strong, Get Gone’ mantra, and make sure you check the local evacuation zones so if you have to evacuate, you know where to go.” Minister Allan says it is also important to factor in Covid-19 into your emergency planning. “Make sure you pack face coverings in your grab bag and holiday luggage. Remember that evacuations will always override any stay at home restrictions, but if you need to evacuate, try to keep two metres distance from others.” The results from this year’s Annual Disaster Preparedness sur vey, commissioned by the National Emergency Management Agency shows 85 per cent of New Zealanders are aware they need to evacuate if they are near the coast and a long or strong earthquake happens. NEMA‘s Long or Strong Get Gone campaign, being rolled out this summer, reinforces that message and reminds Kiwis of the right actions to take. “Most of the tsunami New Zealand experiences aren’t large enough to flood land areas and cause major

destruction. However, that’s no reason to be complacent. Even a small tsunami can generate strong currents and surges that could result in injury or death,” Kiri Allan said. When a larger tsunami that could cause flooding of land areas is expected, people will need to move out of all tsunami evacuation zones. An Emergency Mobile Alert will be issued to areas under threat and warnings will be provided via radio, TV and on civildefence.govt.nz. coast and could arrive in minutes, there won’t be time for an official warning. It is important to recognise the natural warning signs and act quickly — Long or Strong, Get Gone. “There is never a better time than now to learn more about your tsunami risk, know how to prepare and to update your plan to keep your whanau safe.” Tsunami evacuation instructions override any restrictions that may be in place requiring people to stay at home, such as Covid-19 alert level restrictions. The commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Ruapekapeka represented an opportunity for New Zealanders to reflect on the role that these conflicts have had in creating our modern nation.
THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL
“The Battle at Te Ruapekapeka Pa, which took place on January 10 and 11 1846, marked the end of the Northern War and was the culmination of the first of a series of conflicts signifying the beginning of the New Zealand Wars,” says Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Kiri Allan. The major causes of conflict were the concern of some Ngapuhi that the moving of the capital from the Bay to Auckland had hurt them economically, and that the Crown was exceeding its authority in the area. Hone Heke Pokai and his supporters cut down the flagstaff at Kororareka (Russell) four times to make this point. Other Ngapuhi hapu led by Tamati Waka Nene sided with the British. “The conflicts waged during 1845– 1846 were some of the earliest occasions where relations between Maori and Europeans deteriorated into open warfare, so it is important to acknowledge and understand the impact they had. “Marking 175 years since the Battle of Ruapekapeka provides us with an opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the events that took place there, and for the stories of our past to be shared more widely. “Now one of our most significant heritage sites, Ruapekapeka is one of

the largest and most complex Pa in the country and has been described as a masterpiece of military engineering. It is especially important for our rangatahi to learn about their history, because in understanding our past, we can build a stronger foundation for a shared future. “The introduction of New Zealand history into the curriculum of all schools and kura from 2022 will help ensure the important people, places and events in our nation’s past are more deeply understood by future generations.” Commemorative activities to mark the anniversary of the battle were
organised by local hapu and took place at and around Kawiti Marae in Waiomio between January 8 and 10. A memorial to the British servicemen who died during the battle will also be unveiled on Wednesday, February 3 at the British camp below Te Ruapekapeka Pa, as part of this year’s Waitangi Day activities. “I acknowledge the efforts of Te Ruapekapeka Trust in planning for the anniversary, especially following the recent passing of its chair, Allan Halliday, who was dedicated to developing a powerful and memorable series of commemorative events.”

Encouraging youth careers
23
The importance of primary industries has been recognised with a new sector to be included in the 2021 Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games to help young people into rural careers. The Rural Games will now include Westpac Agri Futures in association with Property Brokers. This is to be held on Friday, March 12 in Palmerston North. “Agri Futures is all about encouraging the next generation into agriculture sector careers,” said Westpac New Zealand general manager Institutional and Business Banking, Simon Power. “The demand for staff across rural New Zealand has only grown since Covid-19, and Westpac understands the need to support efforts to encourage more Kiwis to enter the rural workforce. “There is a wide breadth of career opportunities available right now. From dairy, horticulture, fencing, shepherding and shearing, through to arboriculture, apiculture, finance, science and increasingly Agri-tech, which is particularly strong in the Manawatu.” Property Brokers chairman Tim Mordaunt said the rural economy is more buoyant now than it has been in decades. “For those wanting to experience the ultimate Kiwi outdoor lifestyle, a career in the rural sector is unbeatable.” New Zealand Rural Games Trust chair, Margaret Kouvelis MNZM, said Westpac Agri Futures would have a heavy focus on industry bodies and those institutions that specialise in preparing youth for rural careers. In recent decades there has been a
strong focus on careers in cities, and this has been to the detriment of rural New Zealand. It is time we brought some balance to the conversation, so young people understand the well-paid opportunities that are there right now.” Westpac Agri Futures will run from 9am to 1pm on March 12 2021 in The Square, Palmerston North. The event runs alongside the Allflex Clash of the Colleges in association with Inspire Net and Talent Central. Teams from 15 secondary schools across the mid and lower North Island compete in rural tasks to take home bragging rights in the juniors’ and seniors’ sections. Alongside that is the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Ladies and Rookie Championships and the Rural Golf Challenge. That night is the Norwood New Zealand Rural Sports Awards, and on the Saturday and Sunday is the Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games. The Westpac Agri Futures Day will host companies including Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Dairy NZ, Fencing Contractors New Zealand, HortNZ, New Zealand Arboriculture Association, New Zealand Shearing Association and Southern North Island Forestry Association. Educational institutes include ACG Training, Southern Institute of Technology, Talent Central, UCOL and Vertical HorizoNZ. To register an exhibit site email info@ruralgames.co.nz.

135 and still not out
by Andy Bryenton
Any day now a very big birthday is coming up. It’s the anniversary of German patent number 37435, filed on January 29 1886, 135 years ago. It’s the birthday of the motor car, and it changed everything about how we live. This birthday goes uncelebrated most years, but here, on the threshold of a new era in motoring, it’s not a bad time to look back. We’re told that internal combustion’s days are numbered, that big oil is about to get clobbered by big electric, and that there’s evidence of this everywhere. New Zealand’s Car of the Year for 2020 was the all-electric Mercedes EQC. Tesla may soon buy out General Motors, or even Volkswagen, based on soaring share prices. You’ll read in this publication how Polaris has teamed up with electric bike makers Zero to jumpstart the electric offroader revolution. It’s less of a jump, however, than that made in 1886, when the proud parent of the automobile, Mr Benz, asked us to start thinking of horses as partners in sports rather than as the backbone
of transport. He was suggesting doing away with a partnership between us and Mister Ed that had lasted since 3500 BC. The first-ever car was not even a car. Modern reviewers might call the PatentMotorwagen a highly sprung, impractical, underpowered and dangerous trike. There was no roof, steering wheel or windscreen. Its three wheels seemed to have been scavenged from pennyfarthing bicycles. However, the one-litre, one-cylinder, three-horsepower machine captured the imagination and promised cities free of the environmental disaster of the Victorian era; horse poo. By 1888 the basic auto had been refined to the point where Benz’s wife Bertha jumped on board one morning and drove 106 kilometres to Pforzheim in one go. That was it for the stagecoach; incidentally,
REMEMBER...

This month sees the 135th birthday of the automobile or the end of 5,365 years of the dominance of the horse
this trip caused the first female motorist to invent the gearbox. During 135 years a lot has been learned through the development of the car. Today, they are safer, faster, more reliable, less expensive and better equipped than ever before. That’s taken 13 decades of racing triumphs, engineering breakthroughs, flops and blunders, stylistic greatest
hits and family vacations. While we might be considering new engines for the car, the idea is part of our social DNA. Happy birthday, then, to the one machine which only those of the hardest heart can call ‘just another appliance’. Electric, hydrogen or powered by some new source as yet known only to science fiction, the car will be with us for many years more.

Silver lining on wheels
January 2021
25
by Andy Bryenton
The year 2020 may go down in history as one of the low points, alongside honourable mentions such as 1666 and 1918, but thanks to the relentless momentum and timescale of the auto industry, it was a good year for cars. Most new cars have a gestation spanning years of research, development and crash tests before they see the showroom. That’s why some models linger on with facelift after facelift until they can be wheeled right from the forecourt to a motor museum. A little something like a global viral outbreak did little to slow down the release of new models touting the latest technology. Neither did it slow down sales, which have been relatively buoyant in New Zealand. When it comes to the best of 2020, then, what was the top of the tree? It’s an offering from serial car of the year winners Mercedes Benz, that memorably pipped everyone else for the very first car of the year in 1886, by inventing the car before everyone else. This time, it’s their all-electric SUV, the EQC, which has beaten an admittedly much more challenging field to take top honours. The EQC, which is the subject of a current, somewhat confusing television ad campaign that also features the 1886 Benz-autowagen, is a huge departure for the company that created diesel and boasts several of the 20th century’s greatest cars and petrol engines in its gallery of hits. Contrast the EQC with the venerable,
Mercedes EQC — the all-electric sports utility, which took out the top spot in New Zealand’s 2020 Car of the Year awards
still-trendy G-Wagen, and you’ll find no 5.5-litre V8 fettled by the boys at AMG. The key words used by Mercedes about the EQC are ‘near-silent’, ‘practical’ and ‘refined’, as befits a smooth and gadget-laden flagship sports utility for the urban cruise rather than military manoeuvres. The price at the pump is totally negated, with two asynchronous electric motors replacing the traditional cylinders and pistons. The range is a
handy 354 kilometres according to the United State’s EPA rating, though this traditionally grades lower than Kiwi road tests. That puts the EQC out of the shadow of range anxiety for most local users. Even the $142,900 price tag seems reasonable when weighed against the other heavy hitters of the
Mercedes range. With the world going electric, the stylishly appointed Benz was a clever choice for the car of the year. Still, most motorists will be focussed on what derives from its technology, as we collectively wait for EVs to rival oldfashioned internal combustion on initial investment cost.

Polaris and Zero join forces
by Andy Bryenton
Polaris, makers of the popular Ranger, RZR, General and Sportsman off-road vehicles, has partnered up with electric powertrain innovators Zero Motorcycles, adding an injection of Silicon Valley technology to its business model. Polaris says that this 10-year partnership in off-road vehicles and snowmobiles is a cornerstone component of ‘rEV’d up’, its long-term strategy to position the company as the leader in off-road electric vehicles. While Tesla, the big name in on-road electric cars, is flying high with wild stock prices and rumours that they may buy out one of the big four automakers entirely, Polaris seems to be on track to replicate this feat for the world of off-roaders. “Thanks to advancements in power, pricing and performance over the last several years, and with customer interest surging, now is the right time for Polaris, with Zero Motorcycles as a key strategic partner, to aggressively accelerate our position in the development of off-road electric vehicles,” said Scott Wine, chairman and CEO of Polaris. Wine is not fooling around; models developed jointly by the two firms will see the light of day by the end of this year, and an EV version of every Polaris product, from the Baja desert-beating RZR to the snow, by 2025. “Zero Motorcycles’ mastery of the electric powertrain for powersports is unmatched in the market. We believe this transformative partnership will enable us to leapfrog technological hurdles around range and cost while
Polaris and Zero Motorcycles have joined forces to storm the off-road world, promising exciting new electric vehicles on sand, dirt, mud and snow
providing a tremendous speed-tomarket advantage. Leveraging the strengths of our teams, Polaris and Zero will collaborate to shape the future of powersports.” Zero Motorcycles CEO Sam Paschel is equally enthusiastic about combining his firm’s tech know-how with the manufacturing might of Polaris and its
global reach. With Polaris’ scale and broad product line-up, this strategic partnership will be the largest in Zero Motorcycles’ history. Under this 10year exclusive agreement, Polaris will develop, manufacture and sell electrified ORVs and snowmobiles using Zero’s powertrain technology, hardware and software.
From the local perspective Alan Collins, Polaris managing director Australia and New Zealand, said: “This news is very exciting for our part of the world. “Our sales of the Ranger EV have grown year-on-year substantially proving the desire from our customers for this type of product.”
