Planting for bees

JANuARY 2022

New Zealand farmers now have access to a free handbook offering practical guidance on how to plant strategically to feed bees.

Clover is one of the plants that help feed bees

The document brings together knowledge from 10 years of field and laboratory research by the New Zealand Trees for Bees Research Trust, with significant financial support from the Ministry for Primary Industries and other funders. “It is a useful tool to assist farmers to support the bees and incorporate into their on-farm planting for biodiversity and other environmental benefits that customers are now demanding,” says Trees for Bees farm planting adviser and trustee, one of the lead researchers for the handbook Dr Angus McPherson. “The beauty of our approach is that farmers don’t need to set aside land, especially for this planting. “We show farmers how to incorporate a low-maintenance, bee forage planting plan into planting they are already establishing to increase production and improve their farmland.” The handbook covers 10 different types of plantations, including riparian protection, land stabilisation, shelterbelts, paddock shade and shelter. It also teaches on native bush biodiversity, roads, avenues and laneways, amenity, edible plantations, apiaries and beekeeper yards, and mānuka plantations. Each plantation type is described with examples, illustrations, advice and plant lists. “We aim to help build more resilient and sustainable farms by taking the best

possible care of our star performer — the honeybee,” says Dr McPherson. “Bees all around the world are facing a number of threats, including pests, disease and pesticides. The best weapon against these threats is to provide our bees with a steady supply of forage to help them stay healthy and strong. “That includes ensuring a wide range of flowering plants in spring and autumn when bees are most at risk of pollen and nectar shortages. The handbook’s principles and guidelines can be adapted to any type of farm, from pastoral to arable and horticultural farms. “The same principles can also be applied when deciding what to plant in public parks, on lifestyle blocks and in home gardens.” Steve Penno, MPI’s director of investment programmes, says MPI is proud to support this important research. “Honeybee health is crucial because bees are the foundation of agricultural production in the New Zealand economy. “Planting essential bee forage as part of farm management will ensure a viable and sustainable future for our bees, beekeepers and farmers.” Since 2011, Trees for Bees has planted more than 75,000 bee forage plants in 32 demonstration farms throughout New Zealand. The Handbook for Planting Trees for Bees on Farms is available as a free PDF on the Trees for Bees website at treesforbeesnz.org/handbook. Limited softcover print copies are also available.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A SANCTUARY OF

LOTUS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Pauline and Hugh Rose have created a haven for the lotus plant in purpose-built ponds at their Maungatapere property.

“I

was always interested in gardening as a child and would beg my mother to have a section of garden as my own,” says Pauline. “Hugh and I moved to Parua Bay in 2001 and ran beef and grew vegetables like kūmara. Our neighbour Owen was the banana and pineapple guru and we formed Tropical Fruit Growers together to help other people set up bananas and things. “One day, Hugh brought me some lotus seeds as he knows I love experimenting with new things. The flowers are stunning, and every part of the plant is edible and is highly revered in Asian countries. “I knew nothing about them, so I had to research how to grow them. It was really difficult, but we had lots of discussions, and I managed to germinate some seeds.

“They are amazing and are a completely different family to the water lily. The lotus starts growing in mud, and it is a very messy job to plant them in ponds. I call myself a swamp creature when I am working with the plants. “The beautiful leaves arrive first and can grow to more than a metre wide and high. Lotus sits above the water, and the leaves also repel water when it falls on them. It runs off like little pearls due to the hairs on the leaf surface. When water is on the leaf, it is stunning. “I started growing the seeds Hugh brought me in recycled containers and then transferred them into buckets of market garden soil and water. We were surprised to get flowers in late December. People were amazed that I had blooms in less than six months.

Pauline began her adventure with lotus plants when her husband Hugh gifted her some seeds

“We lived on the top of a hill at Parua Bay, and growing water plants was complicated, so we looked for another property that naturally had water. We found this land with a man-made lake from the 1960s. We brought our 60 plants with us, and all, but one died.” Pauline says the plants were young and do not tolerate water level changes. “They drowned in the winter, as the country they are native to has a hot wet

2

Got grass, 3 ways to turn it into silage

season. In winter they are totally dormant, and mine rotted. We also discovered pukeko and swans are fond of them, so it was back to square one. “Hugh brought a digger and created a new lotus pond where I could keep an eye on the plants. I started growing from seed again and controlled the water levels, and we call our property Land of the Lotus.

The lotus grows in various shades of pink and flowers can have single or double blooms

“I work for Uber Group rural broadband and one day was giving a man in Waiuku broadband advice. He told me he had a pond of white lotus to remove, so we went, and Hugh painstakingly dug out eight trunks to relocate to our property. “In 2019 Hugh created seven more ponds, in a boggy paddock. A Chinese lady in Auckland then sold me her rhizomes as her water bills were astronomical.” A rhizome is a modified subterranean plant stem that grows horizontally under the ground. Also known as root stalks, new roots and shoots form at the nodes, with shoots growing upwards. “I put half in the ponds and half in tubs. I continued growing the seeds to increase the colours and in winter, broke down the rhizomes to expand my stock to fill our ponds. “This year’s growth has been the best it has ever been. The flower only lasts three days maximum if picked. Once the flower has finished, you have the pod in

the centre that looks like a showerhead and keeps growing. They are often used in floral arrangements. “The seeds, leaves and stalks are edible, and some people make silk from them. The flowers look a bit like a water lily, but the pod has a beautiful centre. The colours range from white and yellow to various shades of pink, and the flowers can be double or single blooms. “They have a very slight fragrance, and you can make tea from the dried petals. I find it interesting as a flavour. People also slice the pods, cover them in oil and spices and cook them in the oven. They are absolutely yummy. “Once the plants mature, they create an environment that mosquito larvae dislike, so they stay away. The seeds last an extraordinary amount of time. Some have been known to be 2,000 years old. “For me, the way they die off completely and regrow into a spectacular plant is beautiful.”

The Omicron COVID-19 variant has been detected in recent international arrivals. Vaccination means that you are far less likely to fall seriously ill or transmit the virus to others if you become infected. If you haven’t had your first dose, please do this now. If you are due your second dose, find a vaccination clinic near you – no appointment needed. If your second dose was at least four months ago, you are eligible for a booster. There is evidence that a third (booster) dose is required for optimal immune protection from the Omicron strain. You can get your booster dose at a walk-in clinic, pharmacy or from your GP. From 17 January, online bookings for booster doses between 4 and 6 months can be made at BookMyVaccine.nz. If it has been more than four months since your second dose, you can book online now.

A MINIATURE

HORSE PASSION BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

As a child, Leanne Stringer grew up around horses and now spends her days caring for her herd of miniature horses near the Kaipara Harbour. PART TWO

W

hen Leanne purchased her son Hayden a miniature horse for his 12th birthday, she didn’t realise a lifelong passion would begin, and they delight in ensuring the horses in their care have the best life possible. “I love watching my herd and seeing the individual personalities of each horse as they race around the paddocks together having fun,” says Leanne. “When you see a miniature horse, you should be looking at the confirmation of a large horse on a miniature scale. They mostly have lovely personalities, and people have them as therapy animals and take them to rest homes and schools to visit. “The ones that are stroppy or illtempered have usually been spoiled with too many tidbits and treats. If given too many treats, they come to expect it, and if you don’t have a treat when they see you, they get grumpy, so they need discipline.

2

“I give my little herd a 20kg sack of carrots. I throw them out to everyone instead of personally handing them to each horse to avoid them getting jealous of each other. “One of my horses absolutely adores children. My friend’s children would come to visit, and she would get grumpy at the other horse for coming near her visitors. “The horses are so entertaining — we love watching them run around in a group. You see a lot of natural behaviours that people with one or two horses don’t get to see. They have real family dynamics, and you see who is friends with who just like humans. “It is like a school yard with your popular group and quiet ones. They have their routines and sit in the sun and have a little walk together or run around the paddock racing each other.

Leanne Stringer is often found on the horse showing circuit and has won titles such as Multi Supreme Champion with Marua Colour n pastel

“In the evenings, they get together and run around and play before the sun goes down. We also have a donkey called Brian, who lives with my mum’s miniature named Rosie.

“We rescued Brian from a macadamia orchard. When we went to load him on to a float, he would sit down like a dog and refuse to move. Due to his floating issue, he became a permanent resident at our farm.

We compete nationally, and at times, we travel to other parts of the country to help at shows. “The miniature horses are very intelligent. They do things like walk up to an electric fence and listen to it with their ear to see if it is turned on or not. Ours often do this before going for a swim in the lake that is sectioned off by an electric fence. “They are so cheeky and clever — they give us hours of entertainment. We often take them to Uretiti Beach for a swim and meet up with friends. They play together and race on the beach. One taught himself to surf the waves.

“We love our miniature ponies and their individuality. We enjoy their different quirks and having them as a part of our family.” Leanne has lent four ponies to a friend Kerry whose daughter Heidi is unwell. “Heide was born with a condition called Neurofibromatosis type 1 and has tumours growing on her nerves that will recur across her lifetime,” says Kerry. “NF1 has affected the optic nerves in her right eye and her spinal growth giving her scoliosis. Heidi has had four

surgeries to correct her spine and also has anxiety disorder. “One pony, Jack, has become Heidi’s buddy, and he is very therapeutic for her. He is a gentle soul, and she competes with able-bodied children in the miniature horse world. It gives her the chance to win ribbons, and he has boosted her confidence. “She loves him to bits and all the other animals too. Having the miniatures has been a delight for our family — they are darling little creatures.

“Mum got Rosie from down country, and Rosie decided that Brian was her husband. They hang together every day, and if you can’t find them together, there is something wrong.” Leanne says some people think horses need to be stabled, but they don’t all the time. “We don’t breed them, and my show horses are either ones I brought or rescued. They live out in the paddocks happily together. “For Hayden and my niece, competing and showing built their confidence, and they have made some really great friends.

THE

FIRST POINT OF

LIGHT

On a bleak rock of an island named Motuopao at Cape Maria van Diemen lies the remains of Northland’s first lighthouse and the houses its keepers inhabited from 1879 until 1940.

BY LIZ CLARK

S

hipping navigation around New Zealand’s coast had always been a hazardous one. As early as 1861, the issue had been raised by the maritime fraternity, lighthouses were needed to reduce the significant losses of vessels entering local waters. It took until July 1874 for the government to decide where to place Northland’s first lighthouse. Initially, plans had been made to site a light at the Three Kings Islands. However, the remoteness and difficulty of landing materials for any potential structure proved a significant barrier for any future lighthouse construction. In March 1875, any title held by mana whenua to Motuopao was extinguished by the government and gazetted as a reserve for the erection of a lighthouse. The site for the new light was fixed on the highest

point of the island. In the same year, the lantern and light apparatus were ordered. In 1876, the apparatus, including a French-made eight-panel Fresnel lens system, was then shipped to New Zealand on the Arari. Designed by John Blackett, work on the construction of the new lighthouse began in August 1877. Timber, extra materials, supplies and workmen were transported to Motuopao by the steamer SS Stella. A derrick for hauling equipment ashore and a tramline leading to the centre of the island were also built. On March 24 1879, the revolving light was illuminated. In clear weather, the light was visible for more than 40 kilometres. A fixed red sector was placed on top of the lighthouse to warn of the danger of the nearby Colombia Reef. 6 Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

Houses were also constructed for the first keepers and their families. A look into the correspondence from the Marine Department dated February 5 1879, has the first assistant keeper RH Wilson asking for a transfer of his bank account since he was now stationed at Motuopao. Later, keeper Wilson was granted a salary increase. In 1881, CH Robson was appointed as principal keeper, with an annual salary of £140; JW Nicholson and F McGahey were engaged as assistant keepers. Life on the isolated island had its difficulties, including obtaining the supply of fresh meat and regular mail from the mainland. To resolve the issue, an aerial ropeway was constructed using strong wire. A hand-wound hauling wire was attached to the main cable, from which a large wicker coal basket hung to carry the meat, other goods and mail across the open void between the island and the mainland. and salt spray meant the cable needed to be replaced several times during the time the lighthouse operated. While the Marine Department forbade the lighthouse staff from using the cable for personal transport, at times, that order was ignored. A letter written by one of the children living on-site during 1888 gives a small insight into the lives of the younger residents living on the island. ‘l am going to tell you about the place where I live. It is an island called Cape Maria van Diemen, and lies off the North West Cape of Auckland. There is a lighthouse here, and nobody lives here but the light keepers. ‘I have been here 18 months, and during all that time, I have not seen any girls except my sisters. A steamer, called the Stella, comes here once every three months. I have no pets. There are no animals here but goats, which supply us with milk.

The iconic Cape Reinga lighthouse was built in 1940. Its light and apparatus were taken from the dismantled Motuopao structure

‘There are lots of seabirds here, which build their nests in holes all over the island. Some of the kinds are penguins, petrels and muttonbirds. We sometimes see whales spouting and diving in the sea close to here. There are lots of pretty shells here, which get washed ashore with the tide.’ Telegraphic communication was established from Awapuni in 1895.

Much later, in 1922, the first radio beacon was set up in an effort to improve marine communications. By the late 1930s, the site was no longer suitable for navigation, and by 1940, the lighthouse was partially dismantled. Its light and apparatus were used for the now iconic lighthouse at Cape Reinga.

Industry scoops awards

Free online training created to attract Kiwis into horticulture took home two awards at the recent international LearnX Live! Awards. New Zealand Apples and Pears Inc, GoHort and eCampus NZ launched a series of 10 short courses to attract job seekers and career changers into jobs and training in the primary industries in early 2021. The courses, which were created in response to labour shortages due to the Covid-19 border restrictions, won a diamond award in the Best Pandemic Response category. Other award winners in this category included The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Victoria University Polytechnic. “The courses, which are open to everyone, represent the horticulture industry’s public front door,” said New Zealand Apples & Pears Inc’s Erin Simpson. “Workers displaced from jobs as a result of Covid-19 can use these taster courses to find a home in the horticulture industry and understand how their current skill set will support them in our industry.” The courses are being promoted through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Opportunity Grows Here campaign. It was launched last year to help New Zealanders find employment opportunities in the primary sector. The team also took home a diamond LearnX award in the Best Bite Sized eLearning Design category. Employers, industry bodies, and the education sector are increasingly exploring ‘bite-sized’ learning opportunities or micro-credentials as an alternative to longer, on-campus qualifications.

This style of learning helps Kiwis upskill, adapt to rapidly changing technology, or gain specialist skill quickly and at low cost without pushing pause on their lives to study. Anyone interested in entering the horticulture industry can enrol in the free courses and complete up to 10 courses. Learners are awarded a digital badge when they complete each course successfully. These can be displayed on a resume and shared on social media and professional networking sites. The resources in the courses were designed so they can be used in other contexts. The team hopes to see them reused and repurposed by other horticulture sectors and as part of relevant NZQA-approved programmes. Eastern Institute of Technology has already integrated the courses into Primary Industries programmes. In addition to gaining digital badges, what students learn in the courses is recognised as part of their work towards an NZQA accredited qualification. Mr Simpson says he is heartened by the way the education sector and industry experts are collaborating to address the challenges New Zealand is facing as a result of Covid-19. “This is a great example of collaborative work between industry and New Zealand’s education sector to offer agile, timely, adaptable learning opportunities in response to specific industry challenges such as labour shortages.”

Happy new year

JANUARY 2022

Rice paper rolls by Jessica Keesing

Happy New Year! I hope 2022 is off to a great start for you, wherever you find yourself. It’s certainly been a well-deserved break for many.

MP Chris Penk stood with Groundswell NZ protestors in July last year, joining crowds like this one in rural Dargaville to show solidarity with farmers and tradespeople

For those of you who have continued to provide essential services through the holiday break, I personally thank you for your service. We couldn’t be without you. As your local MP, I want to highlight the importance of thorough policy making that ensures government legislation does not lead to unintended consequences for those living in our area. Unfortunately, the recent traffic light legislation was dashed through parliament at lightning speed late last year. It’s proving a prime example of lawmaking that has caused more confusion than clarity, in some areas at least, and created as many problems as solutions. In another example, my electorate office and I have recently been contacted by numerous constituents about the Automobile Association requiring that anyone who sits their practical driver’s licence test must be double vaccinated against Covid-19. To be clear: negative Covid-19 tests are not being accepted. The unintended consequence of this could well be that unvaccinated teenagers end up driving on our roads without the

appropriate licence, which of course, only creates more risk for other road users. One alternative approach could be that if it’s good enough for unvaccinated individuals to board a flight with a negative Covid-19 test, then it’s good enough for our young people to sit their driver licence test that way, perhaps while wearing a mask. That’s got to be better having unlicensed youngsters risking their own lives and others on our roads. As this example of unintended consequences from sketchy policy development shows, we simply cannot afford to rush our democratic lawmaking processes this year, as we saw all too often in 2021. I’m really looking forward to being back in parliament soon to represent my favourite electorate as your local MP, getting stuck into challenging the government on key issues. Until then, I will continue to be out and about in the electorate, of course. Please feel free to say hi and let me know your hopes and dreams for this year.

and basil leaves and prepare vermicelli noodles following the instructions on the packet. Set aside. Combine all dipping sauce ingredients and set aside. Once the chicken has poached, pull apart and start the assembling process. Dip the rice paper roll into water (make sure you don’t make it completely sodden, otherwise it will be hard to roll), add vermicelli noodles, chicken, cucumber, capsicum and then the mint and basil leaves, then roll. Then enjoy. The sauce is easy enough to tweak where you need to, I like it a bit tart and salty; however, do whatever works for you.

Aspiring in archery

13

JANuARY 2022

Rodney College Year 10 student Gage Laughton won the New Zealand International Field Archery Association Under 18 Nationals earlier last year, adding previous sporting accomplishments. “Gage also won the ASB Young Sportsperson of the Year award for Archery in the bowhunter category,” says father Lee Laughton. Gage has been involved in kayaking since he was seven years old. By 10, he was racing in the under-14 category and won bronze medals at national level five years ago. “We then moved away from the racing section and focussed on extreme white water kayaking. We have a river with a waterfall at home, and Gage practises there but at 15 years old he would have to paddle things like Huka Falls to be noted. He has no fear, so I pulled him back from the sport until he is older. “His grandfather introduced us to archery so we can have more time

together as a family. We then built a professional archery course here on the property so Gage could train. “I didn’t realise how involved we would get with the sport, and he was the New Zealand Bowhunter and National Champion at 10 years old. I then had him change bow styles from traditional to the modern one, which has all the wheels and things on it.” Gage has placed first or second in competitions many times over. “Modern archery has faster and stronger bows. You shoot circles and then 3D foam animals from up to 50 yards away. He was set to compete at the Bowhunter Nationals in October, but Covid hit, and he is presently placed at number one.

“He is very competitive, and archery gives him a good challenge to focus on. Gage has a great attitude, and he doesn’t mind losing, but he does get annoyed at himself, and it makes him try harder. I think this comes from mixing with older people from a young age through kayaking. “People have always thanked me for his politeness and kindness to others he meets along the way, even when competing. His attitude is so good he is now sponsored by Mike and Linda Lainchbury at Attitude Archery. He had a dream to get on the team, and I had told him he had to earn the spot. “Last year, Linda approached him to be one of their shop shooters. He is now under the wing of Linda for his coaching

Taking up the sport of kayaking from seven years old, Gage has attended many extreme white water events

Rodney College student Gage Laughtonwon the ASB Young Sportsperson of the Year award for archery in the bowhunter category this year

and future prospects in the sport. Being on the team is a real encouragement to him, and he loves the support and experience he is getting.”

Gage transitioned from the traditional to modern bow and practises on the family farm before competing across the country when possible

Electric future for Toyota and Lexus

Toyota is planning to roll out a suite of 30 electric vehicles by 2030, and some of the range teased in concept form at a reveal event late last year hints at more than just inner-city practicality. The Toyota Motor Corporation announced an intention to have 30 electric vehicle models available globally by 2030, just ahead of Christmas. Its offering seems to include both a range of sporty EVs and the electric ute, which was mistakenly touted by New Zealand’s prime minister during 2021. The company, running hot after winning Car of the Year for the sublime little GR Yaris, is committed to a carbon-friendly future, and the proof looked suitably futuristic. Toyota president, Akio Toyoda, hosted the big reveal, including battery and hybrid vehicles, spanning everything from city cars to a possible replacement to the FJ Cruiser. Plus, a bevy of supercarstyled speed machines, including one metallic orange prototype that has the looks to rival the Lotus Evija in the EV supercar stakes. At the same time, Mr Toyoda announced a NZ$100 billion investment into the development and production of hybrid and battery electric vehicles. “The announcement by Akio Toyoda this week supports these messages and the recommendations we have been proposing to key government officials. We have maintained that hybrids will continue to spearhead our transition in the shortterm,” says Toyota New Zealand chief executive Neeraj Lala.

Toyota’s CH-R and Izoa models were the first to go full EV

“There have been concerns regarding our commitment to electrification. However, we have been working on BEVs for more than 30 years, and I am confident we are heading in the right direction, and this announcement supports that. The BZ series will lead the

shift to BEVs for Toyota and New Zealand, and Lexus will provide compact cars like the new Lexus UX300e for daily use. Toyota has already surged ahead in hybrid sales, with more than 11,000 hybrid machines hitting Kiwi roads in

2021 behind the Toyota badge. Now all eyes are on the stable of 30 concept cars revealed by Mr Toyoda, as Internet experts attempt to unravel what may lie under the skin of the more exotic variants, including that electric ute.

Emergency Planning

by Colin Hannah — president

I want to raise the topic of emergency planning for rural Northlanders Federated Farmers Northland works closely with Civil Defence and the Northland Rural Support Trust, so that we can be prepared for worst-case scenarios. Federated Farmers Northland is actively encouraging farmers to develop an emergency plan to assist in the event of an adverse event. I believe it is really important that every farmer sits down and works out what impact it may have on the farm business, you, your family and your neighbours. It is about looking out for yourself, your neighbours and your local rural community. There are any number of events that can trigger an emergency, from flood and fire, to volcanic disturbance, earthquake, tsunami, Covid, foot and mouth and more. Planning for worst case scenarios is really important for your business continuity, and there are some great resources to help you start developing your plan. You only have to check out the Northland Rural Support Trust and Civil Defence websites to find really good guidelines and downloadable templates. Members of our Northland executive are soon to be trained to assist with the running of these rural emergency events, as was seen in the Canterbury floods.

3

Surf life savers acknowledged Local surf life savers were acknowledged for their commitment to helping keep beachgoers safe across the country at the 2021 Surf Life Saving National Awards of Excellence.

Colin Hannah — Federated Farmers Northland president

Our Northland Civil Defence team does a great job. To assist them in an emergency, it would be helpful for rural people to have a plan and have some thought about how they will look after themselves in the event of a major emergency in our region. By being prepared, you are more likely to survive an adverse event and bounce back faster. The vision of the Northland Rural Support Trust is ‘supporting c o n n e c te d, e mp owe re d and resilient rural communities in Te Tai Tokerau Northland’. I encourage Northland farmers to play their part by developing their own emergency plans because in doing, so you will also gain a greater understanding of your business operation.

Tania Ahrens from the Ruakākā Surf Life Saving Club receiving the national award from Michelle Newton, representing the SLS Northern Region

Tania Ahrens from the Ruakākā Surf Life Saving Club received the national award Surf Official of the Year from Michelle Newton, representing the SLS Northern Region. “Tania has helped at SLS Kariotahi for a few seasons due to a shortage in numbers. She has officiated at various regional competitions with her can-do attitude,” said Surf Life Saving chief executive Paul Dalton. “Waipū Cove Surf Life Saving members Laurie Bell, Ian Godfrey and Dave Woodman received 50-Year Support Medals acknowledging their 50 years of service to surf life saving.

“Mangawhai Heads, Waipū Cove and Ruakākā surf life saving clubs are three very busy clubs. They are iconic and very popular areas, which lead to very busy beaches. “We want people to enjoy a great summer, but we also want you to get home from the beach safely. Everyone visiting the beach this summer should take note of these safety messages. “The best way to stay safe is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags. “We encourage beachgoers to ask a lifeguard for advice if you are unsure of the conditions of the sea.”

Weaving with harakeke

Mangawhai resident Britta Conrad grew up in Germany and eventually settled at Rākaunui Art Village, where she now focusses on harakeke weaving. “I went to visit my sister in Nepal and decided that living in an English speaking country would make it easier to learn the language,” says Britta. “I went to Australia and enjoyed the laid back lifestyle compared to Germany and then came to New Zealand. I love it here and gained residency 30 years ago. “When I first arrived, I visited the Titirangi market and saw flax kete being weaved. I thought one day I would learn to weave harakeke. “In 2004, I met local weaver Debbie Stone, who was holding a harakeke workshop, and my journey began with Debbie becoming my mentor. “I then completed a one-year certificate in harakeke weaving with NorthTec. It was a once a month Te Wānanga course at a marae in Hōreke. We made the tukutuku panels for the wall and learned everything, including how to pelt with feathers. “I later started attending markets and also offered lessons as a way to give back what I have learned. At the time, people were realising the plastic problem we have here. “I had always recycled and used my own shopping bags, so I created a flax shopping bag with a handle for people to use. A basket can take me three hours to make, while the traditional kete can be an eight-hour job.

“Muka is traditionally used to make handles and cloaks. You scrape the inside of the leaf away to get it, but I am not that good at it, so I use hemp or sisal. I make a long handle and wrap it around the bottom of the bag so you can carry more weight. “I like beautiful and practical things and have storage baskets all over my house for items such as shoes and laundry. I enjoy making a traditional food storage basket known as kete waikawa. They are not perfect, but they are very functional. “I now have a harakeke garden at home as there are certain varieties of flax that are better for weaving, and my friends let me harvest theirs. If flax has been dyed it is prone to fade in the sun, but it doesn’t take much looking after. When flax items start to deteriorate after a few years, I put them in the garden to break down. “My passion is my work, and I teach traditional Māori weaving and the customs around it. The Māori culture is quite spiritual, and flax was an essential resource. They made everything, including clothing, baskets and fishing nets. I have great respect for the tikanga and protocol, which I teach before each workshop, and we pray before we harvest to show our gratitude for what we are receiving. “The traditions are important to me as it is not my culture, and I am blessed and humbled that I have been taught to weave harakeke.”

Teaching people to weave harakeke has become a part of Britta Conrad’s passion as she ensures they learn the Māori cultural values of the craft

Britta makes several types of flax baskets, which she personally uses as a healthy storage option

Harakeke is grown in Britta’s garden, and she is also gifted leaves from friends’ gardens as well

BUSINESS PROFILE

Expertise amid a maritime playground by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to stunning scenery and smooth sailing, Northland’s Doubtless Bay is, without a doubt, world-class. “After all these years in the industry, I’m fortunate to still love this work,” says Pete. “That drives a passion to do the very best I can to deliver excellence to my customers.” Coming back from the tropical Pacific Islands after 13 years, Pete gravitated to the Doubtless Bay area for its warm climate, endless summers and veritable maritime playground for boaties. Everything from small fishing craft to large cruisers can be seen out on the water here, and he was in a position to help the owners of them all. Pete established Doubtless Bay Technical

Solutions in Coopers Beach, with its own specialist workshop and hard pad for serious nautical overhauls, and since 2019 business has been booming. Now, those who have any questions, issues, upgrade plans or projects afloat in the boating world have a valuable asset amongst them. From lubricants and batteries to electronics and even trailers, Pete is the Far North’s go-to professional for everything, stem to stern. With a hot summer of boating underway, he’s there to help with your maritime missions, big and small.

The bay is a magnet for sailors. Polynesian navigator Kupe was said to have made the first landfall there, as did the first European whaling ship to visit these waters. Captain Cook coined the name when he logged the area as ‘doubtless a bay’, meaning, in the nautical parlance of his era, a place where the ship could anchor safely.

Today, boaties seeking a haven for their vessels still come to Doubtless Bay and the business of local marine expert Pete Wederell. Whether it’s for a tune-up of their inboard or outboard motor, the fitment of new electronics, or a comprehensive survey complete with hull testing, Pete is a well-respected professional with close to four decades of expertise to share.

Slurry tankers versus irrigators While most farmers start with one or the other, many end up with both a travelling irrigator set up and a slurry tanker; it’s all about having the best of both worlds. Irrigators An underground pumping system gives you the power of automation. Woohoo – reduced labour! Not only is it great to automate tasks so you can get on with other tasks, but this is really handy during busy times like calving or to be able to irrigate overnight when the sun’s not out. The main downside to irrigators is they’re limited by the length of your pipeline and can only move in straight lines, which most sections are not. Additionally, there’s less control over the spread, with a higher chance of wind drift than a slurry tanker with RainWave applicator. So they need to be kept at least 25 metres away from any waterways for compliance. Not to worry – this is where a slurry tanker comes in. Slurry Tankers Your slurry tanker can do what the irrigator can’t — making them a great pairing. With a slurry tanker, you

Michael Prestidge — Nevada Effluent Management Specialist

can take it anywhere, anytime, and depending on the applicator, you may be able to get closer to waterways. Due to its control, many councils have approved the use of a RainWave slurry tanker closer to waterways than what they would allow for an irrigator.

Biological Fertilisers Solid and Liquid FERTILISERS Liquid BioChar Humus Builder Cal-Phos Increase soil humus and biological activity - from $15 /ha Soil Force Biological Phosphate Fertiliser Re-Charge Nano-Cal Multi-Cal Calcium-Carbon Fertilisers Stock Primer – Mineralised Carbon Drench Build immunity, suppress pathogens; e.g. Rotovirus, E. A Nevada slurry tanker in action

A slurry tanker can manage thicker slurries, making it useful for feed pads, barns, stone traps, underpass sumps, as well as pig or poultry effluent. They can also be used to clean your trough. Your annual pond empty is also made a lot quicker and easier with a slurry

tanker — suck it up fast and spread all over the farm. Slurry tankers are very low maintenance and a good contingency should anything go wrong with the irrigation system. You can even make some money back by contracting out to neighbouring farms.

Engineered for tomorrow BIOROCK (NZ) Limited supplies industry-leading, environmentally friendly wastewater treatment solutions to the domestic and commercial market, has no moving parts, is completely non-electric for the treatment process, and has stood the test of time. They are the obvious choice for ultrareliable, low cost and low maintenance, on-site sewage treatment, which translates into cheaper cost of ownership. With more than 30 years in business and 70,000-plus installations worldwide, BIOROCK is a progressive company that continues to invest in research and development of new technology to keep pace with changing environmental standards. Relying on natural aspiration to provide oxygen for the naturally occurring bacteria, the systems convert raw wastewater into a clear, odourless liquid. Any odorous gases commonly associated with a traditional septic tank, are removed via a wind-driven ventilator and dispersed to the atmosphere. So you can purchase with peace of mind. Being constructed from high-density polyethylene, tanks are lightweight and easy to install. You will find several BIOROCK systems installed in remote locations such as the Marlborough Sounds, where they are commonly flown in via helicopter. With a young, dynamic team supported by a breadth of industry experience from senior managers, you will find a strong network of accredited installers across New Zealand who work closely with customers to implement a system that has minimal impact on the environment.

Art with mushrooms

Jeanette Vickers took up photography as a hobby in 2005 and has since become infatuated with photographing the many varieties of the humble mushroom. “One day, I was playing golf in Mangawhai, and my ball went out of bounds. I went to find it and found some beautiful mushrooms. One was a purple parasol, and the other was bright yellow,” says Jeanette. “I told my husband Chris, and we brought a digital camera with a macro lens so I could pursue my interest. I then hunted for different fungi every second day. “I have always photographed what other people don’t see, and the purple parasol was just that, and I became besotted. I started showing my photos to friends, and we would have big discussions as many don’t look like mushrooms.” Jeanette photographs tiny and large species of mushrooms that people don’t realise exist. “These mushrooms are often not edible, but extremely photographic. We have thousands of species in New Zealand, and until now, only 1,400 have been identified. They can be as small as three millimetres wide and be all colours with different designs and gills, sponge or a net pattern underneath. “The Schizophyllum commune is one of the most beautiful, tiny mushrooms. It resembles waves of tightly packed corals. You find it in very large groups. “I joined the Mushrooms of New Zealand Photography Facebook page years ago, and

Jeanette Vickers became fond of photographing the world of fungi after discovering two unusual mushrooms on a golf course

only this year someone else has posted a photo of another Schizophyllum commune somewhere else in New Zealand. “Another is the Anthracophyllum archeri, commonly known as Orange Fan, and it grows on dead wood. I have seen around 900 types in the Mangawhai area alone. I started going on the Tanekaha Walk, which is a forest with different trees. You get a wide range of fungus there.” Jeanette says the mushroom is the flower, and underneath is like a white cobweb that can go for miles.

1

Custom-built & eco-friendly Prefabricated Homes & Offices Our plans range from 10 to 100 SQM!

There are thousands of mushrooms in New Zealand; although many are not edible, they come in all manner of sizes, colours and shapes

“Underneath is actually the seed body, and they shoot up when the climate is right. Fungi is a very important part of life as they break down waste, not just wood. “Research shows that mushrooms are great eaters of carbon and will mop up things like oil spillage and nuclear waste. They eat waste and turn it into something that isn’t toxic.

2

“I often show people mushrooms that they don’t even realise are there as they are so minuscule. Some look like wine glasses, and the rainbow mushrooms come in red, pinks, purples, blues and yellows. “To me, hunting for fungi is treasure hunting like finding shells on the beach. When you see something, you have never seen or photographed — you go crazy.”

Children’s chopper story

25

JANuARY 2022

by Ann van Engelen

The first in the series based on a real-life rescue, the Northland Rescue Helicopter’s latest children’s book, Rescue Horse, has been launched in time for Christmas. “The story follows five other tales of the Northland’s Rescue Helicopter choppers Mike, Lima, Juliet, Charlie and Oscar — popular adventures brought to life,” says spokesperson Steve Macmillan. “The sixth instalment focusses on Northland teacher Monique Bradley, a survivor of a horse-riding accident on the beach at Whananaki South in 2015. She is now a Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador.” Monique suffered a brain bleed and fractured spine after the fall from her horse. It took four to five days for her memory to resurface. “The day has been filled in by those who were there, who called for help, and kept her still on the sand while they waited for help to arrive. That help came in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. “The pain would have been unimaginable for Monique. However, she was knocked unconscious, and to this day, remembers nothing from her accident. She was at Whangārei Hospital for one week before being transferred to ABI Brain Rehabilitation in Auckland, where she stayed for a month before returning home.” Monique has since completed her teaching degree but still suffers the effects of the brain injury at times. “It is really rewarding being able to give back in such a large way. I am a teacher and love books, so it is a perfect fit,” says Monique.

“To be able to inspire children that they can achieve their goals is really special, and I am proof of that with my journey. I feel privileged to help the Northland Rescue Chopper service by using my story to help raise funds and give back because of the help they gave me. “With the brain bleed, there was a strong possibility I could have died. The flight made my chances of survival much higher and heightened the possibility of a good recovery. I don’t want to think about how it could have ended up without the chopper. “I am grateful my story was able to be brought to life to illustrate the amazing work of this life-saving service, which is here for us all 24/7. All proceeds from the book sales help keep our helicopters in the air and saving lives.” As of midnight on December 29 2021, 1,281 flights had been recorded since January 1 2021. That compares to 1,115 flights in 2020 and 953 flights in 2019. Every year Northpower and Top Energy manage the annual fundraising campaign for the rescue chopper service and contribute $250,000 to the appeal. The latest campaign has raised more than $320,000. To support the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service financially or to purchase any, or all five, of the rescue chopper children’s books — go to nest.org.nz.

Command from the front

by Andy Bryenton

Can-Am has started 2022 the way they mean to go on, revealing a range for the new year that emphasises power as well as utility and fun. The Maverick sits at the top of the range for off-road adventure, while the redoubtable Defender remains the pick of the bunch for heavy-duty off-road work. However, sitting at the crossroads of these models is the revitalised Can-Am Commander. This machine has undergone some subtle cosmetic changes during the years to become an amalgam of both work and play capabilities. This year marks the tenth birthday of the Commander, and it’s good to see that substantial evolution has come from Can-Am listening to customer feedback. It means a lot of upgrades during the life of the Commander. It shows through in this year’s more refined, quieter CVT gearbox, more powerful, low-mounted 700cc or 1000cc engine choices, and a large list of add-ons to customise individual vehicles for work, hunting, trail riding or the beach. Work is still very much on the agenda, though the Commander’s new look hints broadly at the rakish lines of the Maverick. Pointedly, the Commander boasts the biggest tipping cargo tray in its class and the ability to haul more than 900 kilograms, both key indicators of good on-farm versatility. Ten years of advancements have also been felt in the suspension and handling department, where ground clearance and grip have been put to the fore. The

A decade of small changes add up to a winning combo for the Can-Am Commander

2022 Commander comes with double A-arm front suspension and torsional trailing arm suspension to the rear, both equipped with sway bars for stability. That doesn’t just mean fewer lumps and bumps through the bucket seats. It also means better grip and more rubber on the ground in tight spots, lending the driver confidence.

Being a crossroads model, the 2022 Commander is also highly customisable, with boxes, racks, clips and tie-downs all over, and a more powerful magneto to generate the voltage for spotlights, light bars, winches and even stereo systems. How far you go with making the Commander your own depends on how far you want to go off the

beaten track. Different builds can make this a hunter’s companion, an angler’s best friend or simply a rugged and dependable runabout for farm chores. Ten years on, the Commander is going strong and deserves to be on your list if you’re looking for a new multipurpose offroad machine in 2022.
