Another year is underway

Welcome to Northern Farming Lifestyles 2024. We trust that the summer season so far has been a positive one as we reflect on stories we told last year, such as that of Kate and Jeremy Mounter, here with their children. You can review their 50/50 sharemilking story on page 15. We trust this year will continue to be positive and look forward to engaging with you, our readers, each month.

Colin Hannah — Northland Federated Farmers president

Dear farmers and landowners, as a passionate Northland farmer, I urge all Northland farmers and lifestyle block owners to read this document and urgently submit in opposition to the proposal for numerous reasons, so please read on. NRC hasn’t even done a cost analysis of this proposal, as required under Section 32 of the RMA. I have, and the NRC’s freshwater proposal would hammer the Northland economy by removing $275– $300 million in income annually. The trickle-down effect could be a cost of more than $1 billion to the region, a massive social impact that would decimate towns and communities. Why? It’s because NRC staff are proposing a land grab without a hint of compensation — now or ever. So, if passed, this document will have an utterly detrimental impact on you and your family members forever. All of the hard work of our Kiwi forebears and those who fought in a war to protect us will be out the gate thanks to unrealistic idealism from folk who have possibly never experienced even a partial blister through manual labour on the land but still want primary produce to feed their families — our future generations. To put some of this in perspective, the National Policy Statement on Freshwater recommends fencing three metres back from waterways. Yet, the NRC wants to blow this out of the water (literally) and

force landowners to put fences 10 metres on either side of waterways. Crazy, to say the least. Ironically, the NRC Mission Statement quotes: ‘Working together to create a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities.’ So, the new plan completely contradicts this ethos and undermines the very people in the Northland community who help pay the wages of the select few NRC staff trying to railroad this idiocy and bullying through. If they get their way, there will be around 250,000ha of Northland’s 617,000ha of pasture cropping and horticulture farmland, which does not allow sheep or cattle on to graze grass. You could plant trees on those hillsides you are not allowed to farm, but to harvest those trees, you will need a consent. It is highly likely that you may not get a consent. The value of your now uneconomic farm has possibly dropped below your equity held in that farm by a Northland Regional Council passed bylaw. The banks could come knocking on your door. You and your family will now have to seek work in town to keep your head above water. Good luck paying for fuel. This Fresh Water Plan is going to decimate rural communities and create ghost towns — so please submit your opposition immediately. Yours sincerely, Colin.

Cherie Gwilliam and her partner Jamie Hall have lived on their regenerative farm for a decade, using natural resources and doing organic gardening.

Northland and Auckland landowners were encouraged to join the Kaipara Moana Remediation programme and take advantage of funding opportunities to fence off waterways and plant them in native trees.

Justine Daw, Kaipara Moana catchment leader Cherie Gwilliam and Jamie Hall bring their children, Arakai and Summer, up on their organic farm

“When we moved to our 16-acre bare block in Kaiwaka, there was nothing here, so we lived in the caravan for a year or two. We are now living comfortably here,” said Cherie. “For me, my main passion is my family having easy access to nutrientdense, clean and healthy food to give them the best start in life. Watching Summer, picking strawberries from the garden, fresh Sugar Snap peas from the vine and eating cherry tomatoes makes me happy. Knowing

that none of them have chemicals on them and that they are healthy is great.” Cherie has branched out by doing organic gardening workshops, putting the money made from them back into growing plants. She desires to turn the property into a retreat centre. “We sacrificed a lot to get to where we are. We are doing more traditional farming than conventional practices. Healthy living and healthy food can be an attainable lifestyle.”

Last year, the programme had been operational for less than two years and was working with almost a third of the 1,500-odd landowners within the Kaipara Moana catchment. Leader Justine Daw said her team is keen to collaborate with more landowners to get more planting underway. “As a Jobs for Nature investment, our focus is on developing meaningful, local, nature-based employment. We are

looking to offer training and development opportunities, building long-term relationships with tangata whenua, and upskilling rangatahi. At its heart, KMR is about growing people by growing trees. “We can now better support marae trusts, iwi/hapū, catchment groups and other community groups to participate in restoring the Kaipara Moana. We welcome all expressions of interest online at kmr. org.nz.”

The farm’s best workers

In 2023, we were reminded that working dogs are very much part of the rural scene, be it hitching a ride on a farm ute or on the tray of a farmer’s quad bike, shuttling between paddocks and properties as part of a working day.

Working dogs are still a much-appreciated part of the farming industry

What many may not realise, though, is that dogs have a history in New Zealand that began long before the working breed arrived with the early European pioneers as they go back to the first canoes of the Polynesian voyagers. Today, more than 2,000 working dogs are a vital part of the New

Zealand economy, controlling the day-to-day management of a huge export economic sector — sheep and beef farming. Come rain or shine, their work involves running tens of kilometres a day at full pelt and responding to a range of verbal and whistled commands.

Harvesting, pruning or storage, we’ve got you covered!

Love for equines in the blood

In July, Lucy Fryer shared her love for the Welsh Mountain pony, and after a brief break restarted her stud.

Lucy said her husband Eric and their son Charles always support and help her with her horses, and she couldn’t do it without them

“I was born in England, and my parents moved to New Zealand when I was 17 months old. Mum had horses, and dad had a big Clydesdale that would plough the field in England. I loved horses so much, but I never had pictures of them on my wall — I wanted the real thing.” Lucy bought her first Welsh Mountain Pony colt from a breeder in Kaukapakapa.

She took a break from breeding after losing her beloved foundation stallion, Nilloh Jackson King of Pop. “Jackson was my pride and joy. He is the reason I fell in love with the breed. He was a beautiful palomino with a good temperament. I love working with them, handling them and sitting with them in the paddock. They can be cheeky and give people so much enjoyment.”

ADVERTORIAL

Northland’s premier rural event The Northland Field Days is back for another three days filled with agricultural innovations and technologies.

January 2024

Peanut trial plantings resumed

5

We reported that peanut planting time was back across five Northland sites in stage three of a $1 million project to establish a new agricultural industry in the region.

Greg Hall, peanut project manager for Northland Inc

Following a washout of the 2022 crops, an estimated five hectares of peanuts were to be planted in October/November. Funding through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund enabled the project led by Northland Inc to continue for a third season. The project has yielded promising results for the potential of a commercial peanut growing industry in Northland. The tractor pull and the mini Mack truck are just two highlights for this year’s field days

With plenty of entertainment for the whole family, you are sure to have a great day out. With more than 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in the agricultural sector and machinery as well as lifestyle and leisure, there’s something for the whole family. The three food courts will provide a huge variety of delicious foods from around New Zealand. The novelty this year will be a mini replica of a Mack truck that will take little and big passengers around the event venue. In farming innovations, there will be an agricultural drone doing demonstrations. Thinking about joining the agricultural sector? The Fencing Contractors Association NZ and Civil Contractors NZ Northland branch

38th

29th February,

will be on-site doing demonstrations, best practices and a career hub. You will also be able to have a turn at driving a digger with two machines available, one for children and the other for adults. For the petrol heads, head on to Rowland Road to watch the modified lawnmowers take on the dirty tracks, but if you are more into farming, you can watch the big machines at the tractor pull on Power Farming Road. The tractor pull team has also put a challenge out to bring your three generations of racers to compete against each other. So come and show them who’s the winner in the family and have bragging rights at the dinner table for the next year. General heats are starting on Friday.

FARMING

Northland Inc project manager Greg Hall said after the year one trial, where four cultivars were successfully harvested from sites across Northland, hopes were high for continued success.

Shearing sports back in action

After the combined trials of the pandemic and a bizarre turn of climate, which culminated with Cyclone Gabrielle, the 2023 Golden Shears were the measure of a renaissance in Kiwi shearing sports competition after two years in the doldrums.

We heard how well-known Northland counsellor Dee Jones launched her much-requested book called The Aspie Book, written to help neurodivergent and neurotypical people better understand themselves and each other, with Professor Tony Attwood writing the foreword.

The glamour calendar event in March hadn’t been held since 2020, when the three-day event’s celebration of 60 years as the world’s glamour shearing sports championships was one of the last major events to be held before New Zealand’s first pandemic lockdown. “There was also the hint that younger people now see the need to join committees and help run the events for fear of losing them amid age-based attrition affecting most sports at the volunteer levels,” said Shearing Sports New Zealand spokesman Doug Laing. “A 10-year-old shearer, Wairua Edmonds, added another layer to the multi-generational involvement in the wool industry when he shore for the first time in the novice heats in Masterton.”

Dee Jones is well sought after for her experience of helping neurodivergent and neurotypical people understand each other

Dee discussed examples of difficulties people face. “I have ASD people asking how neurotypicals work because they feel they keep stuffing things up, and neurotypical people ask me how neurodivergent work,” said Dee. “My job became a translator between people, and my book explains each other to each other. It is written so people can look at the pictures and

read the case studies or explanations. It is very understandable, and there is very little reading between the lines. I don’t think anyone has ever written on neurotypical people, and those on the spectrum want to know how they work.” The Aspie Book by Dee Jones can be ordered online at Amazon, The Nile and other websites. Search of significance

February had sisters Rosemary Gore and Suzi Poupouare seeking potential relatives after discovering a photo of their grandparents’ wedding.

Many demonstrations formed the fight against the Dome landfill plan

Tip opposition has emerged as the genesis of a new look at refuse disposal in Northland, with our councils taking a serious look at the possibility of wasteto-energy plants. “Cyclone Gabrielle dramatically illustrated the fragility of our rural environment and flooding and slips, which showed how the

planned Dome Valley dump could leach into the Kaipara,” says Fight the Tip executive member Sue Crockett. The Fight the Tip movement says: ‘Our fight is not over yet. The time for more action is now.’ It has a fundraising initiative to continue its work, with details on its Facebook page.

“Our grandfather’s name is Michael Thomas Victor Priestley, but he was known as Vic,” says granddaughter Rosemary Gore. Rosemary said they knew their grandmother but not their grandfather. Vic’s last known address was in Nukutawhiti, a small rural village on State Highway 15 heading northbound to Kaikohe. He was employed by Finlayson Brothers. “We are interested in finding out who the first man and fifth

man are in the rear of the photo. Our grandfather’s best friends were Māori,” said granddaughter Suzi Poupouare. “One of our uncles said that the men in the photo were our cousins, and we are trying to trace that mighty heritage. We always thought our little touch of colour was Indian. Obviously, we are such a melting pot of different cultures, but we would like to know where we come from.”

In February, we heard how flower farmer Sarah Hallgarth turned an interest in flowers into a successful business called Mrs Floriferous Flower Farm.

Farmers catch waves

11

Last summer, and this one, we reminded readers that farmers of all ages are invited to trade the paddock for the beach and take a break on the waves as the weekly Surfing For Farmers initiative returned to Northland.

The Surfing For Farmers initiative encourages farmers to take time out on the waves

Sarah Hallgarth has a large variety of dahlias and other flowers at Mrs Floriferous Flower Farm in Kerikeri

“My dad, Bill Cullen, farmed deer, beef and sheep. It was my grandad Doug’s farm until my dad took over,” said Sarah. “I am a school teacher and always jokingly said I was never going to marry a farmer. I married John, and he works for Landcorp. We eventually came here to Kapiro Station, where he

is the manager, and we love it here. I began growing dahlias because we have a nice big vegetable garden, and I wanted to do something for the bees, butterflies and other pollinators.” Sarah found she was suddenly a flower farmer rather than a home grower.

“Surfing For Farmers is all about getting farmers off-farm and having a bit of fun while trying something new,” said Ballance Agri-Nutrients sales manager Calvin Ball. The initiative was started by Stephen Thomson in Gisborne. Stephen watched a documentary about American soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who were introduced to surfing as a therapy. Being out in the waves changed their lives, and he wanted to see if it could help farmers get off-farm for their mental health.

“The statistics of farmers’ mental health issues are high because traditionally, they don’t talk about feelings. There is a real sense of achievement in surfing. Being in the saltwater has a calming effect, and you are learning a new task with other people. You aren’t thinking about anything else except catching your next wave.” For more information, check out the Surfing For Farmers Northland Facebook page.

SPOTLIGHT ON KAIKOHE

The hub of the north

We were reminded that the Far North administration is centred on Kaikohe, a Ngāpuhi settlement rich in history. It began to change and develop when a rail link south was made in 1914 and dairy farming developed.

Chopper pilot hits milestone

Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot Sue Dinkelacker told us how humbled she was as she reflected on her career in the air upon her achievement of flying more than 10,000 helicopter hours.

The township of Kaikohe was settled by returned servicemen after the first world war

The town was originally called Opanga. In the 19th century, the village was raided by a rival tribe. After a battle, fugitives subsisted on berries among the kohekohe groves on Tokareireia (Kaikohe Hill). European influence arrived in the area when the Rev. Samuel Marsden and party passed through the district in October

1819. Marsden also visited Kaikohe in 1837. After the first world war, returned servicemen settled in Kaikohe and its surrounding area. Then, in the second world war, it was a strategic base for a US Army hospital and air force bomber unit. Today, some of this history is presented at Kaikohe’s pioneer village and museum.

Squire

Sue Dinkelacker has now flown more than 10,000 hours in various helicopters and is a valued member of the Northland Rescue Helicopter team

“I am so grateful for my career in helicopters so far. It has taken me on adventures all over the earth,” says Sue. “One of my favourite aspects is the people I’ve met through flying helicopters, who I have worked with and still do. Flying the Northland Rescue Helicopter is satisfying work. I enjoy

the spontaneity of rescue flying, never knowing when or in what direction, the next flight will be nor what might be required. It could be a boat winch, a night landing in the hills or a transfer between hospitals in stormy weather. I feel very privileged to be part of such an incredibly professional team whose purpose is to help those in need.”

SPOTLIGHT ON KAIKOHE

Four generations of honey

In May, the Gavin family shared their beekeeping heritage retelling a journey that spans four generations.

13

The beginning of a career

The Northland Dairy Industry Awards Dairy Trainee of the Year Bill Hamilton overcame the challenge of a head injury to get to where he is today in an industry he loves.

Liam and John Gavin with Liam’s daughter Rory, potentially a fifth-generation beekeeper in the family line

It began in 1912 when James John Gavin rode on horseback to collect bees from the wild in the Mangakahia Valley on horseback. The passion continues with the father and son team, John and Liam Gavin, who continue the family interest in beekeeping. “My grandfather James and his son Terry worked together, and I worked with my father (Terry). James slowly built his beehive numbers up and moved to our current property in 1925,” said John.

Liam works alongside his father and has heard many stories from his grandfather about beekeeping. “I didn’t work much with my grandad, but I got to spend a lot of time with him. He would come down to the shed at morning tea and tell us his stories, and he was incredibly knowledgeable because his whole life was dedicated to beekeeping,” Liam says.

Bill Hamilton is proud of his progress in the dairy industry

The farm assistant employed by Andrew and Vicky Booth on Richard and Sharon Booth’s 395-cow, 174ha property at Titoki previously completed a Bachelor in Agricultural Science majoring in agriculture. “I received a head injury playing rugby during my degree and took a year off with plans to be a consulting

officer for DairyNZ, but Covid stopped that, and I decided to get work on a dairy farm. I called Andrew and asked if he knew anyone who needed a worker, and he offered me a trainee position. “It’s a different pathway from my original plan, but I am very lucky with the way it panned out.”

For team and community

Mother of three, Billie Hopkins, told us how she joined the local fire brigade in 2015 after observing her mum enjoy her involvement in the service. “We lived in Ahipara, and mum joined because she always heard the sirens going off and realised becoming a firefighter was a way she could give back to the community and never looked back,” said Billie. “I then moved back to Takahiwai to look after my nana. Mum followed and transferred to the Ruakākā brigade, and I decided to do it too and help our community.”

The value of sustainability

Delwyn Simpson and Nicky Maccabee are enthusiastic about beekeeping and enjoy meeting and selling their honey at local markets around the Far North.

Delwyn Simpson and Nicky Maccabee are passionate about the bee industry

“We found ourselves watching a beautiful sunset and discussing our future. It was during this tranquil moment that fate seemed to intervene. A bee landed on my blue shoe, as bees are often attracted to the colour blue. I whimsically remarked to Nick, with a name like Maccabee, you have to be a beekeeper. Our passion for bees and honey drives us to care for our hives, nurture our environment, and produce exceptional honey,” said Delwyn.

Initially, Nick and Delwyn focussed on commercial and export pathways. However, after the industry declined, they thought of other options to sell their goods. “One good thing about the markets is that you get out and talk with people because they give me feedback and gifts of gratitude, and now I realise that my product is amazing. Our diligence is beginning to pay off, our website is picking up, and it would be great to see more parcels going out on the courier,” said Nick.

In March, Kate and Jeremy Mounter told their story about being 50/50 share milkers situated close to Matauri Bay.

A flock of multiple colours

In June, Angela and Jamie Urwin shared their story about returning to Northland and their Damara sheep venture.

Kate and Jeremy Mounter with their sons Jack, Beau and Joe

“We had no family connection to farming. Jeremy worked his way up from being a farm assistant, and now we own our herd and are 50/50 share milkers. He is one of the successes of the farming industry,” said Kate. “We have three boys, Jack, Beau and Joe, who are 12, nine and six. They can go off and play in the paddocks and in the bales, and they love the animals.”

Kate enjoys that they can work their day around the farm. The farm uses the Wilderness Intrepid kits from Kate and Amber Shaw’s business, Parachute First Aid. “It had always been a twice-a-day farm, and now we’ve come in with our once-a-day herd system. We got a record production in 50 years for February 2023 on the farm we are on.”

Angela Urwin enjoys spending time with her much-loved sheep

“I am originally from the Far North and have spent all of my career in the agriculture industry in the Waikato but was mainly surrounded by dairy cows. I started breeding Damaras after Jamie and I bought a small block of land that was better suited to sheep than cattle,” says Angela. Angela discovered her admiration for Damara sheep on a friend’s farm and

loved the unique colours and shedding traits of the breed. “Damara sheep are good for lifestyle block owners who want something that is easy and doesn’t have shearing facilities. Their colours are amazing to look at on the land. They are a fantastic breed and a great option for those wanting a low-maintenance animal with a bit of difference.”

Motocross encourages safety

Dargaville Motocross member Renee Anderson handed over the club’s donation of $1,000 to the Northland Rescue Helicopter staff while encouraging farmers to also donate to the Northland Rescue Helicopter and ensure their farm vehicles are well maintained.

Avoca celebrated 75 years

As Christmas loomed for 2023, Avoca celebrated 75 years in business, and Jim Manderson’s son Bryce said his dad would be suitably proud of his legacy.

Renee Anderson handing over the donation to the Northland Rescue Helicopter staff

“We’ve had to use the service five times over the last 10 years for various incidents,” said Renee. “Without the service, the outcome would have been horrendous. One of our farms is

coastal, and there’s no way an ambulance can get out the back if a quad or tractor rolled. The rescue chopper is a life-saving tool, and it’s often not until you need it that you realise how important it is.”

Jim Manderson (left) with his original business partner Charlie Bickers when Avoca began

“Back in 1947, Jim, a 23-year-old Tangowahine farm boy, seeing the need for bulk lime and fertiliser in farming, took a punt in establishing Avoca,” said Bryce. “Dad teamed up with Charlie Bickers for the first 10 years and then went out on his own in Tangowahine. At the

time, farming was subsidised, and plenty of native bush and scrubland was being broken in privately and at the government level through Lands and Survey. The land had a very low pH and phosphate level, and that’s where he spotted the opportunity for producing lime.”

Creating a northern wonderland

Aaron Millar began with a block of leased block of land that was a former quarry processing site and turned it into a haven for fruiting banana trees in Ruakākā.

The journey of a lifetime

Former Waipū Primary School student Laura Andrews shared her story of completing an Antarctic Heritage Trust Inspiring Explorers Expedition, skiing across the Antarctic to the South Pole in 50 days.

Aaron Miller helps to educate people on growing tropical fruit, including bananas

“I didn’t appreciate tropical fruits when I was growing up, but as an adult, I am getting into it and have a connection to the fruit I now grow,” Aaron said. “My guru Hugh Rose, the original Tallyman, encouraged me to not worry about what ground I’m growing on and to ensure that the bananas are fed so they will do well. He was right.”

Aaron joined the committee for the Tropical Fruit Growers of New Zealand, which focusses on educating people about growing tropical fruits. “We get to learn from each other and teach each other how to grow the best fruit possible and work out the infrastructure of logistics with this new industry. I love sharing it with other people who get inspired by it.”

Laura Andrews credits the positive attitude she has built in life to her experiences at Waipū Primary School and Bream Bay College

“The expeditions honour the legacy of polar explorers from the heroic age in the early 1900s, like Roald Amundsen, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Dr Edward Wilson and Sir Edmund Hillary,” said Laura.

75

“The expeditions continue the legacy on for the next generation to gain inspiration and an interest in the polar regions. I’ve always had a magnetism towards Antarctica because you hear of people having been to Scott Base, and there is a romanticism about going there.”

Hope in the harvest

James Aitken has always had an eager interest in aquaculture, and after the Covid lockdowns thwarted him from pursuing overseas endeavours, he and his family bought oyster farms in Mahurangi.

19

Adventures for all

We discovered things that can be enjoyed in the Warkworth area; whether you want to be enveloped by nature and take a stroll through the Parry Kauri Park or indulge in the local flavours on a food and wine tour, Warkworth has something for everyone.

Warkworth has many activities for local residents and visitors to explore

James Aitken has had a heart for the ocean and aquaculture from a young age

“I grew up on a sheep and venison farm in Central Hawke’s Bay but was born to fish. I loved the ocean — fishing, diving and boating. Fortunately, I always knew that I wanted to do fish farming,” says James. “I was meant to begin working on salmon farms in Scotland, but the Covid lockdowns cancelled my plans. I began seeking opportunities in New Zealand and saw oyster farms for sale in the Mahurangi

Harbour. It was perfect. Oysters are an undiscovered superfood. James also aspires to reintroduce some other aquatic species at the Mahurangi Oyster sites, such as cockles, pipi and seaweed, to the farm’s ecosystem and do some sea grass restitution. “The possibility of trying and learning new things is exciting. Oysters will allow me to do new things. The beautiful Mahurangi is a hidden gem.”

The Warkworth and Districts Museum is the place to discover local history, while the Old Cement Works can still admired from a safe distance with a deep swimming hole that used to be

the old quarry. We learned of the various food tours, the surrounding localities’ delicacies and how Shiloh Farm at Horse Riding Warkworth is suitable for children from age three upwards.

RURAL WHEELS

Cruising into the future

We were reminded that it wasn’t long after Toyota turned the off-road world on its head with the advent of the Land Cruiser that it decided to make a version tailored to a different market.

21

Driving into agricultural history

We heard how the iconic red tractor that mechanised a vast swathe of Kiwi farmlands turned 100 years old last year, and Farmall fans, owners and collectors celebrated, along with the brand owner Case IH.

The latest model is a hybrid Land Cruiser with a 2.8-litre turbo diesel

While the big Land Cruiser was greeted like a long-lost son by farmers, tradespeople and even some armies, 1984 saw the introduction of a smaller, light-duty J70 variant. The Prado name was adopted in 1990. The latest model is a hybrid Land Cruiser with a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 48-volt hybrid electric system.

“The new Prado is going to make a statement for the customers who purchase it,” said Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s chief executive. “Toyota’s design decisions are around making the cars appeal to our customers rather than making them all look the same. This new Prado is an absolute knockout. It’s strong, and it’s tough.”

Farmall celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023

The invention of International Harvester engineer Bert Benjamin was literally groundbreaking. That’s because breaking in new ground with harrows, ploughs and other implements was a task that the simple, dependable machine excelled at. Bert penned the original Farmall in 1923 and followed it up with the bigger, beefier F series, perfect for larger farms.

It was instrumental in the development of bigger implements, covering more ground and ultimately feeding more people. Raymond Loewy gave the farmall a redesign in 1939, and during the second world war production was high as Farmalls toiled to feed allied soldiers, sailors and pilots. By 1947, one million had rolled off the assembly line.
