Advanced Architectural solutions for your life
The displays of huge tractors and equipment at field days are certainly very impressive, but often it is the more interesting looking smaller sites that get the most attention. A really good example was the ‘Possum Plucker’ being demonstrated outside the Department Of Conservation tent at the Northland Field Days this year. This is an ingenious contraption that that can be back packed into the bush to remove fur from possums caught in bait stations and traps. Possum fur has hollow fibres, which improves its insulation properties without increasing weight. It also combines well with merino wool and so ‘possino’ garments are becoming very popular at the top end of the fashion industry. In the past, possum skins suffered from low prices in Western countries due to the animal rights campaigns targeting caged animals on farms and culling seals etc in the wild. Countries like China have less concerns over those issues and this is driving possum skin prices up as well. Now that possum fur prices are looking good, hundreds of possum plucking hunters have been heading off into the bush to cash in on the high prices being paid by exporters and New Zealand textile manufacturers. In a recent TV1 news item, one plucky trapper was reported to have collected $12,000 worth of fur in 7 days. That sort of return is creating a lot of interest and now DOC is being pressured to open up more publicly owned land for trappers. The New Zealand Fur Council estimates that around two million possums are being harvested each year commercially
by Dave Wolland
and returns from possum based products earns New Zealand approximately one hundred million dollars a year. Textiles New Zealand CEO, Elizabeth Tennet, has been making the claim that if Government and local bodies provided more incentives and encouragement the industry returns from possum products would quickly double. The TV1 report also had a DOC spokesman explaining how his department was in a bit of a dilemma. Possums are destroying native vegetation and wildlife and so eradication has been DOC’s primary objective. However, that goal has been not possible so far because they do not have the funds, manpower or technology to do it. And so the controversial poison 1080 is being used to lower possum numbers to less destructive levels. Hunters are arguing that trapping would do much the same thing for free and yield a financial pay back for the country. Tax payments from trapping, trading and manufacturing would then be available for possum proof sanctuaries that are saving native species threatened with extinction. Needless to say, DOC spokespeople are not very comfortable about his proposal. They argue that National Parks and reserves were not created to become possum farms. However, because eradication has proven to be ‘Mission Impossumble’, our Government is facing a lot of pressure to open up more land in areas with high unemployment. You never know, more trapping and less 1080 could one day make possums an affordable addition to the our dinner tables.

The first day of August is a red-letter day on the calendar for rural supplies company Farmlands, as it opens the doors to a new store at Kamo The North Island’s largest rural co-operative retailer has embarked on a strategic growth plan with the sale of some stores, releasing expansion capital. Heading up the Kamo operation is Business Manager, Nigel Parton. “The feedback we have been getting about Farmlands bringing a new store to Kamo is all positive. “I’ve been working in Farmlands Whangarei for the last 15 months and I am really looking forward to dealing with some of our familiar faces and doing business with our new local shareholders.” Nigel has over 16 years’ experience in the rural industry and he has a great understanding of Northland farming practices and challenges. In sales, Stewart Allen has been with Farmlands Whangarei since it opened seven years ago and has been an integral part of the team. His experience in agriculture is huge, covering farming sheep and cattle in Southland, and also growing seed crops. He then worked as a stockman on a station in Australia and as a stable hand in Japan. Dog trialling is just another one of Stewart’s keen interests. Gary Brown joined Farmlands after a 24-year stint with LIC in Northland. He grew up locally on a farm at Towai and bought his first farm at Ararua and later bought a dairy farm at Kokopu. In 1987 Gary joined LIC and put sharemilkers on to the farm. Gary’s previous roles give him a wide range of knowledge in the dairy industry. In administration and sales, Carol Bartley comes to Farmlands with a great deal of experience in the rural industry after working for local water reticulation firm, Arnold Franks Ltd, in a similar role for the past 14 years. She grew up in the Hikurangi/ Kamo area. Garry Parsons in sales is new to Farmlands and the Kamo

Country museum a Far North draw card Like his father, Win Matthews has been collecting gear for decades. People noticed, and neighbours and farmers around the Far North district contributed to the collection. Today Win has ended up with a 1,100-square-metre building at his farm, and a comprehensive display that reflects rural life from pioneering days through the war years. Now in semi retirement from the farm, Win has more time for his interest. As a boy he rode his horse to Taipa, five kilometres away, to catch the bus to school. In those days there was only one house between home and the settlement. The farm sits on an extensive river flat, which required

draining to come into its own. It’s fertile coastal land that can tend to dry out in long Far North summers. The Matthews family switched from dairying to dry stock in the 1970s. These days Win, sonin-law and nephew still own most of the original holding. “It’s a family concern, says Win. His family has a long history of farming in the Far North. A descendant of the pioneering missionary Reverend Joseph Matthews of Kaitaia, Win’s great-great grandfather bought the property in the Taipa locality in 1839. Back then the river was used to move wool to Mangonui to be shipped out. The original farmhouse for the property was across the road near Aurere beach. Win and wife Lyn have been in their present location near the museum for the last 25 years. There is an aviary, and the collection of pet animals beside the museum ready to greet smaller visitors. Allow plenty of time for looking around, as there’s something of interest for everyone. The first vehicle to catch your eye is a Carter Invalid car, dating from around 1945. “These motorised invalid carriages were made in the UK and known as Bath

The great majority of vintage cars are in running condition and include the Chevy 27 Tourer, which Win has owned for 47 years, and rarer makes like Nash and a Singer Roadster. The farm machinery and equipment belongs to both dairy farming and stock farming. Many items such as the horse drawn hay rake demonstrate the crossover era between horse and engine power. Stepping past the early 1900s gig you can view the more domestic side of farming life. Much of this memorabilia comes from the Matthews family, including pioneer photographs, A bike from a bygone era — Raleigh racing bike antique sewing machines, laundry washboards, butter churns, christening gowns, and “It became obsolete as telephone communications objects found in the area — adzes and Moa bones shifted so quickly.” and eggs. Cattle show in cyber space The traditional rural cattle show has taken on a new dimension — thanks to the Internet Matakohe miniature Hereford breeder, Janet Poole, says for many people, access to show venues is limited by time, distance and expense. “An alternative is the virtual cattle show, held by exhibiting photos of animals via the Internet,” she said. “The idea came about in October last year, just as the New Zealand agricultural shows were getting underway. Initially it was to be a national event for breeders of miniature Herefords, but interest was shown by Australian breeders so a transTasman show was proposed. “Word got out via breeders’ websites and suddenly the show had become international. The judges were from Scotland and New Zealand. “Miniature Herefords are full blood smaller replicas of the bigger animals. They are not often in the public eye, although some were shown at a couple of northern districts’ shows last season,” said Janet. “The virtual show was based on conventional schedules used at regular A and P shows, with the addition of a Scenic Class, an Entertainment Class and a Viewers’ Choice Class — the latter being conducted by poll vote. “Entries came in from New Zealand, Australian and American breeders or owners, with a request for future such shows from many others, including from Scotland. “New Zealand miniature Hereford enthusiasts entered from Kerikeri in

the north to Oamaru in the south. A professional website was provided by the Australian Miniature Hereford Breeders Network. “All the photos can be seen on its website at www.amhbn. com. A follow up article with photos is also being published in the American Miniature Hereford Breeders Association quarterly magazine.” Mrs Poole added that if future entries increase substantially, it’s hoped to start a series of virtual shows at a regional level, followed by national and international events. “We hope to obtain sponsors from the different countries taking part, who can supply prizes, putting this kind of show on a par with conventional ones.” For more information: www.riverletsherefords.blogspot.com

As my old tutor used to ram into my head, “Plant predators and disease are symptoms of a faailing crop, not the cause”. It is natural to be healthy, not natural to be sick. We are brainwashed into believing that headaches are a lack of aspirin. We apply chemicals to fight preddatory and weed problems which is as foolish as applying makeuup to cover up pimples. It is about as foolish as smacking yourself over the head with a sledge hammer so that you don’t feel your toothache any more. Don’t blame the black beetle. Like all predators, they are opportunists. They attack when the opportunity is right. If the predator was at fault the whole system would have imploded when the very first one raised its head. They were put there to weed out the weak so that only the fit will survive. You never see the wolves in North America take on the big Bull Moose, they seek out the weak. The Lions in Africa take out the stragglers from the herd of wildebeest they just feed on the injured or sick; this is natures check and balance, it is how nature evolved. The soil is the plants rumen, end of story. Feed the plant via soil fertility and you will have a plant that can defend itself. Here in this country most of what we grow evolved from another hemisphere and in another environment. Therefore, in our acidic soils they will
always have difficulty manufacturing their full set of defences in the form of complete proteins unless we duplicate as near as possible those conditions it evolved in. When we put a man on the moon, he had to take his environment with him. The plant can’t do the same, so we must do it for him. When the plant cannot produce complete proteins they accumulate amide nitrogen compounds, crude sugars and incomplete bio-chemical products. These trigger in the predator, be that black beetle or whatever, that this plant is dying and it is just the place to lay its eggs. This cycle of events is termed the Calvin Cycle and is the cycle that converts crude sugars into starches. From starches the plant produces lignin, from lignin cellulose from cellulose to proteins, from proteins to fats, from fats oils and from oils alcohol is produced; on and on up the food chain. The higher up the food chain the harder it is to break down, that’s why you get pinged for drinking too much alcohol and never for too much pop. The lynch pin in the whole process is the atom of manganese. This is the element that splits the water molecule and kick starts off the whole cycle. When manganese is in short supply the cycle slows down; when this occurs sugars accumulate and become an invitation for predation. In nature there is always a cause and effect, don’t fight the predator, take the stress out of the host.

National award winners For the first time ever, the Ballance Farm Environment Awards have named a national winner Southland farmers Grant and Bernadette Weller are the first holders of the Gordon Stephenson Trophy after being named national winners at Hastings on June 30. The Wellers were chosen from eight other regional winners to take out the national title and the Gordon Stephenson Trophy. The trophy, named after the Waotu farmer who started the Farm Environment Awards, will be presented annually in the future. Northland’s climate, soil types and topography mean many landowners are faced with a feast or famine when it comes to water supplies. From the boggy ground and overflowing streams and rivers during our winter months — and often autumn — to dwindling flows and dropping groundwater in summer, Northland’s water resource could be called ‘temperamental’. The recent Government National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2011 (NPS) recognises that water is our most precious resource, and it is not being well managed. There has been ongoing disagreement over how much water needs to be left in streams to maintain in-stream values — i.e. enough water to keep the stream and what lives in it healthy — and how to allocate water above that level. The first in, best dressed philosophy of the Resource Management Act has hindered the allocation of water to later and potentially more profitable or beneficial users. Using a scientific approach should enable councils to set ‘the environmental bottom line’, the minimum naturally fluctuating flow of water that must be left in each stream to keep them healthy. Flows above that seasonally fluctuating bottom line can then be allocated to various out of stream users. Unfortunately, in a region as variable as Northland, the science to define a bottom line is still a little sketchy. The NPS gives regional councils until 2030 to prepare water allocation plans for the hundreds of streams, lakes and
groundwater aquifers within Northland. To fully understand the resource we are dealing with the council needs to know what everyone is currently using, even those uses the RMA provides for as of right, e.g. for reasonable domestic and stock drinking water needs. The Regional Water and Soil Plan for Northland (RWSP) interprets ‘reasonable’ and sets limits on how much can be taken each day for stock and domestic needs — greater amounts require a resource consent. Anybody exercising permitted activity rights to take water is required to advise the regional council and anybody wanting to use more than these maximum amounts must first obtain a resource consent. (Find out more about the RWSP at www.nrc. govt.nz/rwsp). While the volume of water being taken for, e.g. dairy shed washing, may well have fitted within allowed levels in the past, this may not be the case today. Many farming and horticulture businesses that previously did not need resource consents may well do so now. Not only may they be acting outside the law, their use of water does not officially exist and cannot be provided for in any future allocation plan. 2030 may seem a long way off but if your business is dependent on water you are advised to ensure your right to take it is authorised and on the regional council database. If the council has no record of what you use it cannot safeguard your needs when preparing statutory water allocation plans.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen
Legal matters with Graham Day
This time of year is a very busy one for dairy farmers, particularly with calving under way. Throw in the wet weather and it’s difficult to say the least.
Effluent discharges — Who is to blame? Nationally the sizes of fines for effluent discharges are skyrocketing. With the NRC previously suggesting that one in four farms may be breaching effluent laws, and a Northland farmer recently receiving a $54,000 fine for discharges, it is worth considering for a moment if there is a chance you could be on the receiving end of a similar figure, regardless of your connection to the farm.
In the dairy there is usually something that needs attention, whether it is rubber ware that is being changed, machine tests and repairs or maintenance needed for the new season. These are traditionally done at this time of year. However, it’s not always the most efficient way to maintain the milking machine as everything it needs to be done while dealers are also busy with new dairy installations and upgrades.
Blame has been laid on land owners, farm managers, farm workers, companies and sharemilkers. Mark McKewen
To make this easier on our farmers and our service providers, Milfos is rolling out a programmed maintenance system called iCARE. The idea is that, like your car or tractor, proper scheduled maintenance will ensure the machine will perform properly and keep problems to a minimum. While some work needs to be done while dried off, most can be done throughout the year between milkings when convenient or timely. Consumables can be supplied (even delivered) when they are needed, so no more running out of filter sleeves! Everyone is different, and needs different services, for example you might like to change your own liners but need machines tested, pulsators and vacuum pumps serviced as well. But what about everything else? All rubber/milk contact surfaces need replacing annually, this includes diaphragms of all kinds and yes, tri-clover and RJT seals as well. Cup removers need servicing. The list goes on. Tailoring the programme to your requirements and budget are no problem as flexibility is the key, with payment options available. If you don’t have a Milfos Dairy we are still able to help. The first step is to contact your nearest Milfos dealer for an on farm evaluation and proposal that is custom made for your farm Dairy.
The Courts have consistently found that whoever is responsible for the discharge will be accountable. More than one person can be blamed. In the Northland case referred to above the farm owner had claimed the farm manager was responsible. The Court said that owners could not escape responsibly by hiding behind employment contracts. Because an owner is responsible for the farm infrastructure, and also holds the resource consents, they will be in trouble if they allow a situation to continue without stepping in. At the other end of the scale, farm managers and workers have been found liable for a long time. If a manager is aware of effluent discharges and does not take any action to fix it, they will be liable for failing to act. Equally, a similar situation will arise if a worker knows the boss is discharging and is not assertive in trying to remedy the problem (however
difficult that may be). With so many farms breaking these laws you need to think carefully if you could be blamed if the inspectors arrive. Farm owners and companies would be wise to analyse their resource consents and the infrastructure that is in place. Workers and managers should review their employment contracts and find out what exactly their responsibilities are on the farm. If you have concerns, seek professional advice on these issues. The cost of doing so now could be a fraction compared to those whopping fines.

National Fieldays Report Alle Agwear A 14-year-old Hamilton girl has wowed the audiences and topped this year’s New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays’ Ag Art Wear competition with two wins and a second place. Barely recognisable in their previous forms, designers transformed rural implements into artistic masterpieces. Now in its 17th year, thousands of visitors watched the competition’s daily shows held over four-day events culminating in a sell-out finale on Friday afternoon. Alle Peterkin, a local fourteen-year-old, took out the Avant Garde section with her inspiring piece ‘Semi Precious’ which was also was the ‘People’s Choice’ winner. The plastic hexagon-shaped design pumps water throughout the garment symbolising how precious the water is on the land. Alle was also runner-up in the ‘Under 21’ category with her Dairy Fairy entry. Runner up of the Avant Garde division was Katherine Morrison for her structurally intricate piece, ‘The Dance of the Wired and Woolly Fence Breaker’. ‘Arachnophobia’, a webbed wonder by Corinne Heintze took the highly commended award. The Under 21 category — similar to the Avant Garde section — asks designers to create something unique that challenges conventional design.
Laken Semmens won this section with her elegant dress ‘Just another “Mad Hatters” tea party’ made from tea bags. An Australian entrant, Lachlan Sully, placed highly commended with his graceful piece, ‘Gone Fishin’. Nina McBeth from Taupo won the NZ Landcare Trust category with her wild sika, deer hide, feathers and cow hide creation ‘Kohara Whakapaipai’ (Wilderness Jewels). Runner up was Tracey Brown’s ‘Pingao Maiden’, while Bill and Rose Paul received highly commended with ‘Kokiri Aroha’. Another Australian entrant, Betty Park, won the Designer Traditional section with ‘Jungle Jigsaw’. Runner up was awarded to Charlotte Lind with her wool inspired creation, ‘Fleeced’ while Colleen Mak received the highly commended award with her gun shell dress, ‘Shell We Dance?’ Judges of the Ag Art Wear competition were Marion Manson from ArtsPost, Jennifer Whitty a Senior Lecturer from Massey Institute of Design, Nardene Berry from NZ Landcare Trust and flourishing designer of the fashion label Love Lucy, Jenna McLachlan.

GORS RSE GONE IN A DA DAY AY Improve your land’s value in hours by removing gorse and other noxious weeds without chemical sprays Transforming paddocks from unusable eyesores into great looking areas that help pay for themselves is keeping Ken Borg’s company busy. Ken has been in business since 1997 as a qualified builder and started All About Earth Moving 2005 to offer clients a range of land enhancement services. The purchase of an $80,000 mulching attachment to his digger gave the company an edge and led the company into a whole new area of land clearing services. The firm’s go-anywhere digger is able to clear acres of gorse, long grass and noxious weeds in a matter of hours. “Land is expensive and so owners need to make every inch pay for itself,” says Ken. “Whether they want to increase grazing land for their cattle or increase the land’s resale value, removing unwanted shrubbery such as gorse can make a big difference.” All About Earth Moving’s services really is a case of ‘no job too big’ as its machinery is able to access any gradient and plough into gorse the size of trees — and mulch it down to nothing. “The mulcher is very powerful and can turn gorse into tiny fragments,” says Ken. “Getting good results is far quicker than spraying which can take months to kill gorse. Even after gorse is dead, it still sits on the land looking brown and horrible – it can take years to deteriorate and break down. “Using the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next.” Mulching gorse saves on using expensive and dangerous chemical sprays too, says Ken. “There is a place for spraying gorse because we all know that this is a hardy weed that doesn’t die easily,” says Ken. “Gorse seeds can live in the ground for up to 50 years — so the best anyone can do is manage the problem.” Ken recommends people save money by using a selective spray on gorse re-sprouting that may appear the following season after the machine has been over the land. “Gorse can really choke up the land, so by removing it we give grass a chance to grow,” says Ken. “Of course, gorse may begin to sprout in time, so we recommend the land owner keep an eye on this and perform targeted spraying when required, normally the following season. “This saves a fortune in chemicals and is better for the land. Mass spraying of large areas is not something I would recommend as it can also take out native bush that you are trying to keep.
“Mulching breaks up the gorse so it rots down and puts nutrients into the soil to promote grass growth, the mulch also stops soil run off when it rains. Ken says real estate agents value the work his firm does as removing gorse increases the chances of land being sold. “Real estate agents know we can make land far more attractive and sellable — after all — who wants to buy land covered in acres of gorse and other noxious weeds? “What we can offer people is a very quick way to add value to their land. So it is a perfect solution for land owners who need to free land up for grazing live stock.” Apart from gorse, All About Earth Moving can remove all sorts of noxious weeds on steep hills, including trees still standing in place down to ground level. “Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can go anywhere,” says Ken. ”And while long grass may not be such a big problem during winter, in summer it can be a fire hazard. We can remove it quickly and easily and give landowners peace of mind.” Some people find it hard to understand what an effective job the company’s machinery can do.
“So we had a video made so people can see with their own eyes how we can transform a paddock in hours — anyone can watch it on our website,” says Ken. Using such powerful machinery, health and safety comes first, second and third for Ken. “The safety of people, livestock and property is the top priority for us,” he says. “We understand we are working on other people’s land with very powerful machinery. So health and safety is a priority.” Naturally, the company is fully insured so landowners can be confident that if anything untoward did happen on site, they will not be left out of pocket. “Our business is built on our reputation, people trust us and building on that trust is very important to me personally,” says Ken. IS GORSE OR SCRUB ERODING YOUR LAND’S PRODUCTIVITY? Before...
After!
For an online video demonstration visit www.allaboutearthmoving.co.nz
We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites. Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too diffi f cult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5 tonne machine and its fixed tooth
mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and effi f ciently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

A practical quad bike move
Alexander Scrap
Getting down to earth and practical is a kiwi trait, and an initiative by Farmsafe, in association with Agriculture ITO (AgITO), is seen as a way of saving life through a Quad Bike Farm Licence programme. “On average 35 farmers come off their quad bikes every day,” said FarmSafe national manager, Grant Hadfield. “FarmSafe and AgITO are committed to reducing accidents and changing attitudes through training on safe quad bike riding practices.” The Quad Bike Farm Licence is gained through a practical on job training package that covers safe riding practices as well as teaching participants to effectively identify, minimise and isolate potential bike riding hazards and make safe riding decisions. “Participants also gain an understanding of industry guidelines and their responsibilities, demonstrate they have taken all practicable steps to minimise risk of quad bike injuries, set clear expectations about what is required for safe riding on their property and have a clear method of verifying employees’ training and assessment,” Mr Hadfield added. “Given the recent publicity around the Department of Labour’s campaign of on farm inspections, this initiative is timely. “The CEO of AgITO, Kevin Bryant, said the company wanted to do all it could to help people stay safe on farms. “Quad bikes are a major source of injury and death on farms, often because of lack of experience and training.

Admittedly, this worker is mechanical, and it’s a welcome sight for many who first met this indefatigable rural stalwart in the mid-90s of last century. The latest edition of the Suzuki Farm Worker will be familiar to most farmers and contractors, but it is not quite the same. What’s new is a powerful 1300cc fuel injected motor matched to the fivespeed manual transmission and selectable 2WD/4WD and low range 4WD transfer case, giving plenty of grunt. Underneath the new Farm Worker is what makes Suzuki’s reputation in the offroad world for building robust vehicles. A full chassis supports the cab and well side with leaf spring suspension on all four wheels. Equipped standard with Maxxis Trepador tyres, the go-almost-anywhere vehicle will make demanding on-farm jobs a doddle. A fully enclosed cab space offers true protection from the weather. Available in three variations, the workhorse starts at just $16,990 for the Versatile edition, equipped with a canvas roof and lengthwise rear bench seats. Slightly more expensive at $18,990, the Wellside model opens another door of opportunity with a double skinned gelcoated roof and rear bulkhead made from durable fibreglass. The third version is the iconic Flat Deck. Designed and built in New Zealand,

it is made from galvanised steel tubing and super tough plywood and the foldflat deck can double as a work station or carry-all surface. With a price tag of just $22,500, it’s still well below comparative UTV type vehicles whilst offering so much more in all round performance and weather protection. This is not a converted ATV, but rather a solid work vehicle with real carrying capacity and the ability to tow larger loads. It boasts the largest deck in class with a 500kg maximum load rating — a real plus when it comes to making one trip
count. Towing is easy due to the simple design of the towbar, meaning there’s no issue with connecting and disconnecting trailers. To make it really useful to the farmer, towing capacity is up to 500kg. Seat belts are standard for the driver and passenger, along with easily adjusted seats, which means the cabin is comfortable for drivers of most sizes. To add to the wearability of the seats, Suzuki offer some hard wearing covers made from a durable canvas that will keep the original vinyl seats in good condition and can be easily removed for cleaning.

Perfectly Potty
It’s always good to have some potted container plants, but none more so than during the winter months when the days are often grey, wet or cold The beauty of potted plants is they can be moved around the garden according to the weather or planted especially to the season and placed in a situation best suited to the plants. I love potted colour — it is so cheering by the entrance door — welcoming you home each day or welcoming your guests to your hospitality. Pansies, violas, primulas and polyanthus are good winter colour for pots, but there are plenty of suitable plants to choose from — annual or perennials, plants and shrubs. I like a splash of colour, so I usually choose seasonal annuals for my containers — although I do have a few standardised plants — a bit more expensive to initially buy, but are so impressive they are not only great talking points, but spectacular in their appearance. Apart from providing the opportunity of being able to move containers around the garden, the other great thing about pots is that no matter how big or small your home is, there is always room on the terrace, balcony, entranceway, courtyard or patio for a plant or two and they can be transported, if and when you move, making them perfect for renters and leasers. Make sure your container will do the job you want it to do. Drainage holes
When multi-planting, plant the biggest plants first and the shallower plants around it. I have a potted acer as the main plant and change its appearance with seasonal annuals at its base. You could even plant bulbs or succulents around the base if you prefer. Pebbles, shell, polished stones, marbles or other toppings such as driftwood or bark can all look stunning as a finishing touch not to mention also reducing weeds.
are essential for good plant growth. Choose good quality potting mix — patio and tub mixes are best. A regular feed with either liquid or granulated fertiliser (slow release) will benefit the plants. Choose colours and plants that will enhance your home and garden. A handful of shingle or loose gravel in the bottom of your container will help increase drainage. Do not overfill your pot; you want to leave a good few centimetres for watering (or shedding purposes).
Treat your potted plants much as your would clothing or home accessories — they compliment you home and garden — can be changed at a whim or by season — and can go a long way to personalising, or updating your home. Go on — get potty and enjoy the versatility it brings to your home and garden. And don’t limit your container plants to flowers and shrubs — fruit trees and vegetables are just as trendy, look great and provide fresh seasonal produce year round.
Growing Tips • Pansies, violas and polyanthus enjoy a moist, well drained soil. Use a quality potting mix that has a wetting agent and water storage granules added. • Pansies will grow in full sun to filtered shade. Polyanthus and primulas will also grow in full sun but prefer shade, especially from the hot afternoon sun. Both dislike hot, exposed sunny situations.

There are myriad animal food supplements emerging in todays’ world where science and technology are as much a part of farming as good old-fashioned grazing. But at the end of the day, the answer really does ‘lie in the soil’. Additives popular in the market today include vinegar and extracts of seaweed. But back at the basic level, a well balanced and fertile soil and good weather are required to produce the high quality feeds necessary for good farming. New Zealand is fairly well placed in this regard — mainly due to the extensive application of aerial and ground distribution of fertilisers, replacing limited soil fertility in many areas. A complete and balanced animal feed programme is pretty dependent on soil fertility as most of the deficiency or illness in animals can be traced back to soil deficiencies and also, the wrong application of fertiliser. There is a good regime of soil testing available in New Zealand — again, science taking a major role in improving farm productivity.
Soils are typically examined for characteristics like acids or alkalines, organic matter, or humus, as well as minerals including phosphates, sulphates, calcium, magnesium, potassium — and the list goes on. This determines fertiliser needs and the end result is a good quality grazing that provides the bulk of stock requirements. In fact top-dressing can pay off more than once as the trace elements are recycled several times in manure from stock going back into the soil. Of course, New Zealand has its periods of drought, and supplementary feeds are a necessary commodity in most farming budgets, with palm kernel becoming a standby in recent years alongside hay and silage.

Ask The Professionals
New financial adviser legislation came into effect on 1 July 2011. Does it really help investors? To become an AFA (Authorised Financial Adviser) you have to overcome certain competency hurdles. There have been people out there giving advice who won’t pass those hurdles, so in that sense, the AFA qualifications will weed out the least competent people in the field. You could argue that it hasn’t weeded out enough, but it’s a step in the right direction.
From an investor’s perspective, the new AFA regulations are an improvement. t By using an AFA qualified adviser, investors have some confidence that that person is professional and meets appropriate standards of competence. t All AFAs are required to comply with a “Code of Professional Conduct. t Advisers will have to participate in regular industry training, and maintain a register to prove this, in order to maintain AFA status. t Investors now have a formal complaints process they can use if they think they have been given bad advice. Basically, investors have some protection now that they didn’t have before... but they still have to be vigilant. It’s not a matter of seeing AFA on someone’s business card and thinking you can blindly trust them with your money!

IS YOUR FARM ON THE COAST? The development rights on your farm are dictated by zoning provisions in the District Plan. In Northland many farms are coastal. This means that they will often have coastal zoning in the District Plan rather than rural zoning. In the coastal zones, there are usually more restrictions on what you can do on your land because of the visibility of buildings and landscapes from the coast. By contrast, rural zones tend to be much more permissive in terms of using land and have less controls attaching to them. Sometimes farmers are alarmed to ďŹ nd that even an outbuilding requires resource consent because the farm is in the coastal zone. So, how do the boundaries of the planning zones get set? District
Councils put out zoning proposals which are based on landscape assessments. Usually, the rule of thumb is that all of the land from the coast back up to the ďŹ rst ridge will be “coastalâ€?. Behind the ridge, “ruralâ€? zones will tend to apply. You can challenge the extent of the zoning on your land by seeking planning and legal advice speciďŹ c to your property. This can be done through a private plan change or during a zoning review.

How do I FERTILISE cheaper? Soil Test First Fertiliser is an essential part of every farmer’s annual program to ensure good production of whatever he/she is growing. But it can also be expensive. Cheap fertiliser usually means it is not worth much and is a waste of money. The better approach is to use the best but only as much as you need and no more. Then you are not wasting money and you are fertilising cheaper. Soil testing and a professional consultant’s advice is the best way to get efďŹ cient use of your fertiliser budget. Wise Earth Soil Test Kit is the simplest way to get yourself a valuable soil test result. No one would put
petrol into their car without ďŹ rst checking the gauge to see if it is needed. So check your soil with a simple test and make sure you are fertilising cheaper and wiser. Full instructions are included. Wise Earth Solutions will provide you with a ďŹ rm quotation of whatever fertiliser type you choose, be it Conventional, Dicalcic, Organic or any other. We are not pushing any fertiliser barrow. The choice is yours. The quotation will come from your local spreader/ supplier, ‘on the ground’ or ready for you to spread yourself.

Rothbury Insurance Specialists Insurance is a very topical subject at the moment as we all brace ourselves for increased premiums and harsher terms from insurers. Whilst Northland has been spared the trauma of a major disaster this time, we have also fared better than other regions at this stage with our increases being only a portion of those experienced elsewhere. However, we can’t be complacent. It’s important to remember the part of your premium often referred as the Earthquake premium is in fact a Natural Disaster premium and that brings in a whole raft of other events where Northland is far
more exposed eg. tsunumi and landslip damage to buildings. Understanding your policy is more important now than ever, and having a professional insurance broker at your side securing optimum cover, competitive pricing and acting as your advocate at claims time just makes good sense. The team at Rothbury Northland have been providing these services to rural Northlanders for over 40 years and are proud to remain 100% New Zealand owned. We would welcome the opportunity to review your insurance programme with you.

Agriculture — our nations foundation
by Ian Walker, President, Farmers of New Zealand
We all need to value our agriculture industries and use them as the foundation to move our nation forward — Ian Walker, President, Farmers of New Zealand Labour’s proposed capital gains tax is more for political effect than a truly courageous move to reform our economy. Phil Goff is cynically playing with the fear of state asset sales rather than focussing on the real economic issues facing New Zealand. It’s not the tax system at fault but years of wasted opportunity and poor fiscal spending. Governments are wealth wasters not wealth creators and Labour led governments have historically led the pack. A retiring Helen Clark viewed the ‘Working for Families’ initiative as one of her key achievements. Placing the majority of New Zealanders on welfare and driving us towards the equivalent of a bankrupt Greek economy is hardly something to be proud of.
However, since the 1960s our nation has slipped down the economic rankings. Wage rates have not kept pace with similar first world countries and despite millions of dollars being poured into economic, social and education programmes, the socioeconomic gaps between rich and poor have ever widened. The global effect experienced in the last couple of hundred years has rapidly driven technological advancement and innovation. In the 1800s a candle to light your home would cost the average worker a day’s toil, but innovation and technology has developed at such a rate that a similar amount of light costs you less than half a second of work time. Everything you desire or need has got cheaper and more accessible. Because of this fact, inequality in the last two hundred years has declined worldwide and despite massive increases in population, so has poverty. The reason the human being has progressed as a species is our ability to specialise, innovate and trade. Stone Age men spent days making their own tools and survived by gathering their own food. The noble savage was generally cold, hungry, ill and died young.
The current National led government is not quite as bad but they continue to follow the well trod path of political meddling rather than demonstrating a clear strategy for the future.

Vegetation Management
New Zealand needs to look closely at itself. Governments increasingly place barriers to innovation and specialisation while promoting a supposedly clean, green, organic paradise where technology and innovation must be guarded against.
Feed bins
The last time we had real economic leadership was probably as far back as 1870 when Julius Vogel borrowed 10 million pounds to build a rail network fundamental to building our nation. Historically, New Zealand’s first world status was the result of pastoral technology and technological innovation like refrigerated shipping. Even today our farming practices, while no longer cheap, are the envy of the world.
Today we consume many ideas and innovations of others from all over the world and no one really understands how to build anything ourselves from scratch. We have gone from self sufficiency to agrarian, to industrial and now to a service-led economy. That’s consumerism and it’s good. Self-sufficiency is a road to poverty and the dark ages. Today only one per cent of the population works in agriculture and 75% offer services like hairdressing, restaurants, movies, radio and finance.

Agrikid winners A northern regional team has won a national agricultural competition and are New Zealand’s top AgriKids. The AgriKidsNZ and TeenAg Grand Finals were held alongside the National Banks Young Farmer of the Year competition in Masterton earlier this month. The ‘Future Farmers’ team — 10 year old Zoe Cook, and 12-year-olds Benjamin Cook and David Olsen, from Helensville were first across the line in the AgriKids race-off. All three were surprised, considering none of the team were farm kids, relying upon what they had learned on friends’ farms.
The TeenAg competition was taken out by two teenage boys — James Gardyne (17) and Robert Gregory (16) from St Peter’s College. Known as `Team Waikaka,’ the boys were surprised, but `pretty happy’ with the win after they thought they had done badly in the initial preliminaries. “We put a wee bit of preparation in before we came, but we hadn’t ‘prepped’ for the right things,’’ said Robert. Both come from a farming background and entered because they both hope to be Young Farmer Contestants one day.
Helensville’s 10-year-old Zoe Cook, and 12-year-olds Benjamin Cook and David Olsen are New Zealand’s top AgriKids.

Possum fur shortage The possum fur industry is worth millions and has environmental benefits, but trappers say they are running out of land to work. The New Zealand Fur Council says that possum fur is a $100 million-a-year industry. Currently trappers harvest two million possums each year and the council believes that with support from the Government, export growth could double in five years. Chief executive of Textile NZ, Elizabeth Tennet says the possum industry is packed with potential. She supports the fur council’s call for fur harvesting to be integrated into pest control. New Zealand is the only country in the world producing possum/merino products, but producers can’t get enough possum to meet demand. The New Zealand possum industry is the latest to question the parliamentary report into the widespread use of 1080 poison to control possum numbers. According to the New Zealand Fur Council and Textiles New Zealand, the report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Jan Wright, supporting the use of 1080 poison, failed to recognise commercial possuming was a mechanism for controlling the nation’s pest problem.
27
www.farminglifestyles.co.nz
Trials show fur harvesters can make money for themselves while reducing the cost of possum control to ratepayers and taxpayers. Fur Council chairman, Steve Boot said the council was in talks with Department of Conservation and Animal Health Board, but needed a stronger commitment from them to work with the fur industry. He says there were vast areas of land under DoC management which could be used for harvesting possum fur.
