Wellsford-based Steve Levet was again re-elected as president of Rural Contractors New Zealand, when more than 150 agricultural contractors from around the country met in Blenheim for the RCNZ annual conference. Southland’s David Kean was re-elected as vice-president. Mr Levet says the conference was a great success and discussed a number of issues that are important to the rural contracting sector including health and safety, employment, immigration and attracting people to work in the industry. “RCNZ plays an important role as the leading advocate and strong representative of rural contractors engaged in a wide range of activities across the agricultural sector throughout the country. “The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Doing it Smarter’ and we had an exciting agenda of relevant and pertinent issues to the rural contracting sector, along with a number of topline speakers.” As part of the organisation’s annual conference a charity auction is held each year with the proceeds going to St John in the local area. Sponsors provide gifts for the auction and RCNZ members then bid for these with all the money raised donated to St John in the region where the conference is held. “So with our conference being held in Blenheim this year, that means the $22,500 raised from our charity auction is going to St John in Marlborough,” he

said. Mr Levet says rural contractors have a great affinity for the work of St John around the country and RCNZ is proud to help support such a worthy and valuable charity that plays a vital role in rural New Zealand. RCNZ is the only national association for rural contractors in New Zealand. Mr Levet says if rural contractors believe in a united, strong voice, talking about and tackling the issues that affect their businesses, they should be a member. Any rural contractors interested in joining can find out more information on the association’s website www. ruralcontractors.org.nz or free phone 0800 424 266.

Erosion funds for Northland More than $650,000 has been designated to protect erosion prone hill country in Northland from a contestable national fund for regional projects. Northland’s Regional Council’s land management team has secured the funding over four years from the Sustainable Land Management Hill Country Erosion Programme, administered by the Ministry for Primary Industries. It will be used for soil conservation initiatives in the Kaipara catchment, dealing with sediment issues in the Kaipara Harbour and aiming to improve the area’s ecosystem. Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says the funding will be used to support the council’s work with landowners. The likely initiatives include plans prepared by the regional council land management team to assist farmers in managing their soil conservation targets and helping with the afforestation of land and the planting of poplars and willows. Councillor Shepherd says Northland receiving a 15 percent share was “an excellent outcome considering the fund had been oversubscribed nationally.” “Together with the Government’s recently re-launched Afforestation Grant Scheme, which will see $19.5 million made available nationwide over the next five years to subsidise the planting of forests on erosion-prone land, there’s currently a great deal of support available for erosion control.” Councillor

Shepherd, who farms in the Kaipara catchment area, said sedimentation is a longstanding issue, dating back to the clearance of forests by settlers. Seventeen percent of the 474,000 hectares of land in the Northland region is identified as hill country with high erosion risk. “Elevated sediment loading has been identified as having a major impact on the harbour ecosystems; in particular, sediment from the Northern Wairoa River system that gets distributed through much of the harbour,” says IKHMG spokesperson Deborah Harding. “Impacts include smothering of shellfish beds, loss of seagrass and reduced water clarity. Sediment deposition rates are currently at levels 10 Councillor Bill Shepherd is pleased that the Ministry of Primary times higher than pre- Industries has allocated a 15 percent share of the Sustainable Land Management Hill Country Erosion Programme to Northland European levels. Any initiatives that result in a reduction in the amount of sediment entering the harbour will be beneficial to the health of the harbour ecosystems.”

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

A PASSION FOR

RED DEVON by Ann Morgan Lee Fulton, a prominent Kaipara cattle farmer who formed the Progressive Red Devon Group and established a Red Devon breeding programme has died at the age of 73. Her life was celebrated by friends and family on May 4.

“H

er love for Red Devon cattle started when she cared for the stock daily whilst her husband worked at the Marsden Point Oil Refinery in 1972,” said her daughter Colleen, one of four siblings from Ms Fulton’s two marriages. Their home was also a haven for many welfare children over the years.

Boom, Gun & Knapsack Application of Herbicide & Liquid Fertiliser Trusted by Northlanders for over 30 years

It was a home shared. Her marriage ended in 1992 and she bought the farm in Maungakaramea which became home to her herd. She then met Simon Bailey, her partner whom she also shared a love of music with, and together they built a home on the land and cared for the cattle. In the best interests of the cattle, Lee formed the Progressive Red Devon Group in 2007.

“Like-minded breeders from all over New Zealand joined. With mum’s wealth of knowledge and everyone’s accumulated years of experience, the group has become a great success and is gathering momentum each year,” said Colleen. Lee also instigated a bulk buy of six bulls for several farms from John Squire, in Gore, who has the country’s largest and oldest herd. This ensured new genetics came through the lines and was a valuable move for the breed. At times she would keep a bull calf as a spare in case she

needed one further down the track, and she would lease or lend her bulls out for breeding if someone needed one. “She was keen to see new offspring from her bulls and this was one way of doing that, as she only had a certain number of her own cows to breed from. Seeing the breed grow and improve was something she felt very strongly about.” Colleen lived on the farm and says they formed a formidable calving team. “We could calve just about any breach birth or otherwise that was presented to us and we prided ourselves on 100 per cent live births and accomplishing this without needing to call a vet. It was a huge achievement.

Lee gave all cattle a chance to prove themselves, and would at times keep ‘little’ stock, and wait to see what they grew into

Lee was proud of the breed and with her generous nature, she worked hard to see it grow and improve, not just for herself, but everybody

“Mum ran her farm her own way, she was determined and had always wanted her own, right from when she was a young girl,” said Colleen. “She loved the breed for its docility, ease of calving and foraging ability. These were all reasons, that she was still farming her steep hill country property with a minimum of help before she passed away.” The farm is really exposed to the elements and the back hill is 100

metres higher than the Brynderwyns summit. It backs onto the Tangihua ranges and when the weather was rough in winter, she would put her cows in the bush block for a couple of weeks to forage and keep warm. “When it was time to move paddocks, the heavily pregnant cows would run down to the bottom of the hills, never putting a foot wrong. Mum used to shake her head in disbelief as they just came to a skidding halt by the gate and waited

for her to let them into a fresh paddock. “This last season just gone, mum was particularly proud of the calves, much more than normal I remember. I said to her a few months ago — “Mum, I wish we were at this stage in your

breeding schedule 10 years ago,” She replied “Yeah, I do too.” That was all that was said. “Our brother John has taken over the breeding cows and will continue her legacy. He has big boots to fill.”

OUR QUOTAS BY ANN MORGAN

A group of retired fisheries officers gather annually to reminisce, walk Ripiro beach, go fishing, look at old photos and tell stories — some true and some not so true, of years gone bye.

T

hey worked across the country from Cape Reinga to the Bluff and beyond, via air, land and sea between 196789, and say it is the best job they could have discovered back in the day. The camaraderie between teammates was high and the experiences unique and varied. Fraser MacLean recalls the biggest apprehension of undersized crayfish in the North of approximately 1,300, and another incident with 16,000 pipis. “Training was literally — here is a vehicle, a book of regulations, a warrant and at times a small boat — ‘away you go’. Richard Williams joined straight out of school. He says it was exciting with the behind the scenes work, similar to detective planning and it was rewarding

when the information gathered and the plan came together. Farmers would let them cross through their properties. Two flicks of the headlights at night meant it was them and the gates would be unlocked, giving them access to the goings on of the coast. Duncan Chisholm was the first ‘trainee’ to be employed and joined because it ‘sounded appealing and fun’. They would often catch suspects with 600-800 toheroa. When toheroa season was open in Dargaville — Northland — there would be 50 officers on site. It was a time not just of work but a good training exercise and bonding between workmates. “Those who were working in the office loved this time of year as they got to

The officers observed boats like this, checking the operational methods of purse seiner fishing. This one was netting for kahawai

fishing boats and supervise the transfer of fish to the mother ships.” Ian Walker recalls catching full-time poachers with 23 sacks of mussels. This incident ended up with fisheries being physically assaulted. “It was a great life experience, and very settling after coming back from the Vietnam war,” said Kenneth Ford. He worked for three years as an honorary fisheries officer before becoming permanent. Diving and recovering poached goods was all part of the job. He completed all boat handling courses and attended a

7

Ken Ford, inspecting divers paua for regulation size and quota in the Lyttelton Harbour

navy dive course. Ken travelled around the country including the Chatham Islands and served his final 10 years based out of Christchurch. The experience included spending six weeks on a Korean fishing boat, observing and ensuring they abided by and understood the rules, and which species was which. He also dealt with misunderstandings owing to language barriers. “It was good to work with the guys on the boats — we had good relationships with them,” he said. The situations all varied and changed daily and the men

said this made the job interesting. “We gained valuable experience in a short amount of time,” said Don Young. “We observed on horseback at times, to be less conspicuous. On many occasions people would make a run for it and drive into the ocean and destroy their vehicles or get stuck in the sand, and still get caught.” It was in experiencing these incidents that he realised the job was much bigger than just counting seafood on the beach.

The men worked 24/7 but over time the position took a more administrative role and the rules and regulations started changing. These men discovered it didn’t really suit them anymore so one by one they departed the industry. They reflect on years past and say they were lucky to have experienced so many different places around the country in the variety of roles they played, and yes, they would all go back in time and do it again.

Zealand who could help them. “Many processing plants were reluctant to process strawberries. We wanted our product to be 50% pure strawberries so there are a lot of seeds involved.” That’s when Jason’s engineering background came in handy and he began to create their own processing plant in April 2012. By December it was up and running. What began as a backyard shed business has expanded rapidly and the product was launched in 2013 into a number of Auckland retail liquor stores. “Within three months we were getting enquiries from Queenstown to Kaitaia through to New Plymouth and Wellington and within 11 months we were exporting to China. We are continuing to build on that market and are also currently exporting to the Cook Islands as well as facilitating deals in Australia.

“We knew we were on to a good thing. In the summer we have around 30-40 local employees who help to harvest and process the fruit. “It is really neat to add value to something we are already producing and we have more plans for our domestic market. Passionberry is also being served in some major bars in Auckland, Wellington, Wanaka and New Plymouth. “People love strawberries and there is a real demand amongst discerning customers for low calorie, healthy cocktails. Passionberry contains two punnets of pure strawberries in each bottle and is one of the lowest calorie drinks in the world.” The team is fast approaching their ninth season. The strawberries are planted in June and the season extends over seven months. The rest of the year the entrepreneurial couple work on their

various other business ventures. “We are always super busy and with the cocktail business ramping up it will only get busier,” said Fiona. Not only are their products impressing cocktail drinkers all over New Zealand, they have gained a name for themselves amongst the rich and famous. Justin Timberlake allegedly announced his love of Passionberry strawberries on stage at one of his New Zealand concerts. “We supply to a lot of catering companies

PUBLIC NOTICE - TREE REGULATIONS Trees close to powerlines can be dangerous. Falling branches can break lines, causing fire and the risk of electrocution. A person who touches a tree which is in contact with a powerline can suffer an electric shock. In high winds trees can damage powerlines and equipment, causing power failures and danger to the public. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 (Tree Regulations 2003) were introduced to ensure that trees are kept away from powerlines to protect the security of the electricity supply and for everyone’s safety. The risk of property damage (e.g. from fire) is also reduced. Under the Regulations, trees must be kept clear of powerlines as shown here:

Northpower is required under the Tree Regulations 2003 to advise tree owners of their obligations and the penalties for NOT meeting their obligations, specifically. 1. Tree owners who receive a Cut or Trim Notice are required to ensure that the tree(s) is cut or trimmed to outside of the notice zone in the time required by the notice. 2. Tree owners must also ensure that they advise Northpower of the time and location of this work at least three (3) working days prior to work being undertaken. Penalties Apply Tree owners who fail to comply with these requirements could be fined up to $10,000 plus up to $500 a day for a continuing offence. In addition, tree owners could also be liable for costs if Northpower lines or equipment are damaged by their tree(s). In all cases it’s the tree owner who decides the future of their tree(s) i.e. if the tree(s) is trimmed or removed. In some situations this tree work is done by Northpower at their expense. Call Northpower 0800 667 847 for more information regarding any charges for tree clearance work. Economy Starts in The Soil by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

In these fluctuating times of moderate to poor returns we find ourselves in zones of either going backwards, locked to the spot or unable to go forward with future plans to help stimulate income. What is going on out there? The politicians and the bureaucrats, living off the taxpayers have recently been able to increase their income while the producers of our country struggle to keep their business going forward. If we look back at those good years, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s life was different, people were happy, payouts were good and money was circulating. Agriculture and horticulture were pumping, but since the financial collapse in 1987 producers have struggled to gain parity in the market. I was a victim of that collapse, having to borrow money from the merchant bankers to keep my commercial cropping business going, while paying 27% interest to the bankers. I believe that since then producers have had to work long and hard to extract any money out of the system. As a b a r n s s h e d s g a r a g e s 0 9

producer at that time, I had already shifted from a conventional chemical system to a natural system of production which helped me produce better crops for a better return, which helped to pay off the merchant banks loan; Man, that felt good! Today, for producers, nothing has really changed. To make money you need to do the hard yards and for those producers on the “chemical treadmill” they need to work harder to keep up with the treadmill. Late last year the Australian Grain Board made a statement that they were moving away from the chemical age to help lift dropping production and reduce toxic chemical input to meet today’s consumer demand for safe certified nutritionally dense food for better health and less hospitalisation. It appears to me that the more we continue down the chemical path, the more production suffers, resulting in leaner payouts. For producers to increase income we need to move away from chemicals; their use-by-date has long expired, and look to the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, while naturally achieving the regional councils call for sustainable farming and a sustainable environment. To achieve this is very simple — all you need to do is drop agro-

chemical production and hook into all the benefits nature provides. Agrissentials can take you half way there with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, with Mother Nature providing the other 50 percent requirement of rain and sunshine, resulting in better quality production and better returns. While we stay with chemical production and commodity markets we will always be struggling for income. Out of all the countries in the world New Zealand is the most ideally positioned to move to safe, certified nutritionally dense food production. Our isolation, our soils, our sunshine, our potential for water storage, our natural fertilisers and most importantly our enterprising producers, give us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet and we can easily achieve this goal within 5 years. A year to plan it, 3 years to nationally certify it and an extra year to perfect it — together we can do it. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Mike Jujnovich (Northland) on 021 669 059 or Angela Young (Far North) on 027 886 3570 to find out how Agrissentials’ system will improve farm soil, farm health, environmental health and increase food quality.

Next phase for NAIT July is the start of the next phase for OSPRI’s NAIT programme with the three-year exemption period for pre-NAIT cattle now over.

This means that all cattle must be tagged and registered in the NAIT system, even if they are not leaving your property or were born before the NAIT programme launched in July 2012 -the transition period for deer ends on 1 March 2016. “Our goal is to get everybody on board with NAIT so we can all reap the benefits of tighter TB control and continued access to export markets. The only way to make this happen is if farmers play their part and fulfil their NAIT obligations.” said OSPRI group manager Dr Stu Hutchings. A key focus over the coming months will be working with farmers to help them understand and meet their obligations. The information collected by NAIT allows OSPRI to hold and report on movement and location data to support our food safety and biosecurity systems within New Zealand.

STEAMING HOT COLD FILTERED Discover the Convenience!

Dr. Hutchings says, “We’ve got a team out in the field dedicated to helping farmers meet their obligations. We need every cattle and deer farmer to provide the information about their stock, or they jeopardise the effort put in by their fellow farmers throughout the country who see the importance of this for primary industry.” OSPRI is constantly working on ways to make it easier to meet NAIT obligations and recently launched a new way for farmers to update their NAIT account called ‘stocktake’. Using a scanner, farmers can scan all their animals, or a group of them, and upload one up-to-date file to the NAIT system. OSPRI also recently announced there will be no change to the process for your animals that are impractical to tag -ITT. You can continue sending these animals to a meat processor, and pay a $13 ITT levy. The current legislation around ITT

animals is going to be reviewed and the process for them is likely to change in the future. OSPRI helps protect and enhance the reputation of New Zealand’s primary industries. It currently runs the NAIT and TBfree programmes.

Pastoral science company Farmax is offering rural professionals a chance to become accredited in the Farmax system. The new accreditation process was recently launched at the company’s biennial conference and is offered free of charge to anyone interested in completing it. Farmax was developed by AgResearch and born out of 20 years of research. It is an evidence-based software system giving farmers the advantage of accurately modelling and monitoring pastoral farming systems. “We often get people contacting us for recommendations on who the best people are to carry out projects using Farmax, and we will be recommending those who are ‘elite’ accredited,” said Farmax senior technical specialist Julia Hoddinott. “It’s a fairly stringent process with three levels of accreditation, and a result of 80 per cent or greater is needed to pass and progress onto the next module. It encourages best practice use of Farmax, which ultimately leads to users getting the most out of the system.” The bronze module challenges the participant to create high quality biological pastoral farm systems models in Farmax, while the silver accreditation focuses on the financial information, and how it can be used to complete basic

The elite module focuses on the ability to create different scenarios in Farmax to come up with practical options for the farm. “The elite module also tests participants in their ability to present their findings in a professional report. It’s using the system at a consultant level,” says Ms Hoddinott. She said there has been a keen uptake of the bronze module since it was launched at the May conference with approximately 50 people already completing their Farmax senior technical specialist Julia Hoddinott first attempt. “The first to achieve the bronze new system so far. The Team at Waterflow New Zealand Ltd are based in rural Northland. They have years of experience with all types of water handling including water storage tanks and installation through to reticulation, filtration, UV treatment, wastewater and septic treatment systems, including Council designs and installation and also any farm, domestic and rural drainage. “With a very versatile team, including registered drainlayers, Waterflow can look after and manage any project including site preparation, retaining wall construction, drainage and earthworks

that may be needed around a site or farm,” said marketing manager Dean Hoyle. Waterflow is also the manufacturer of the NaturalFlow Wastewater Systems, the most environmentally friendly sewage and wastewater treatment systems in New Zealand. There are no mechanically moving parts involved in the treatment of waste solids and liquids, reducing maintenance processes to practically zero. “The biggest thing that really excites our customers is that the

We are very much working with nature in our processes, keeping it simple, and using power free natural aerating processes instead of mechanical pumps.” Before marketing the NaturalFlow system, Waterflow New Zealand Ltd devoted almost a decade and significant For

They’re keen on any systems that have the least possible negative impact on the environment. “While the initial investment is the same, from the time you install NaturalFlow you are saving, and with any other conventional system you start spending. This is the really big positive our product offers. It’s a case of looking at the longer-term picture, not just the upfront purchase price.” “Educating local authorities with the innate advantages NaturalFlow offers to consumers and to the environment is an important activity of Waterflow NZ Ltd. The team make a point of engaging with councils and the like as often as possible because the treatment processes are not always covered exactly in the standards councils work with. NaturalFlow comes in two sizes, one designed to cope with waste for one to two bedroom dwellings, and the other for homes of four to eight bedrooms. The technology is also being taken up in rural-based situations other than private housing with the systems being installed in marae’s, rural schools and workshops to name a few.

Owner Karl Driver has run the business for the last seven years and has six machines, including an 11 tonne digger, trucks, tractors and chain trenchers. “My company services the region from Kaitaia down to Warkworth and Wellsford and everywhere in between,” he says. “The laser is used to control the grade of a trench and is very accurate,” Karl says. “We also operate specialised cleaning equipment to clean and maintain existing drainage systems. “Although our core business is the laser drainage we do a fair bit of cartage as well. We can carry metal, fertiliser, sawdust, silage, hay — pretty much anything except livestock. We can also convert the trucks to flat decks to take larger loads. Our digger is available for dams, races or site work.” The team at Driver Laser Drainage can assist with developing and designing drainage systems to properly drain and manage sub surface water. They can create complete new drainage systems or work with existing systems and deal with maintenance, assisting in making good quality soil for farmers all over Northland. SPOTLIGHT ON

Warkworth

Historical Warkworth Originally known as Browns Mill, Warkworth was founded in 1853 by John Anderson Brown who named the area after his birthplace, a village in Northumberland, England. In 1853 the government finished surveying the district and began to offer the land for sale. Mr Anderson Brown and his daughter Amelia purchased 234 acres between them. He surveyed the land into allotments and six months later offered them for sale. He was a builder and an entrepreneur and was attracted to the Mahurangi area due to the abundance of Kauri trees. He set up a timber mill in the 1850s on a site below the bridge on the left bank of the river. A bone mill made fertiliser further upstream at the next falls, and this is how the early name Brown’s Mill came about. Bridge House Lodge, which is established on the site of Mr Anderson Brown’s home, next door to the

Warkworth Bridge, is said to be the oldest surviving building in Warkworth. Bridgehouse has been altered and modified considerably over the years and it has had many businesses come and go. It was the original post office, a bakery, an ice cream parlour, a fishing shop, and a Mexican takeaway. The first commercial premises to be built in the 1860s housed Bowen’s store with Stubbs’ butchery taking over the site on Wharf Street in 1922. Shipbuilding flourished with the ready supply of timber from the kauri forests and early industry also included flour milling and the logging of kauri and other timbers. Early settlers also developed orchards on land too poor for crops. The Red Bluff Orchard was established in 1873

by Edward Morrison and grew to be one of New Zealand’s largest orchards with 250,000 trees. Orchards made way for dairy and sheep farms in the 20th century. The first por tland cement manufacturing works in the southern hemisphere, Wilson’s Cement Company, was established near the town in 1884 but during the depression years it closed. The ruins still remain and the mine is now a popular local freshwater swimming hole. The Masonic Hall was built in 1883, and served as a public hall until 1911 when a dedicated building was constructed. The post office was erected

the same year across the road and was furnished with a telephone exchange within 12 months of opening. At the end of the 1930s came WWII. Warkworth escaped the physical devastation and became host to thousands of military men from America. They were well received by the community and 25 military camps sprung up around the area. They carried out exercises prior to being sent to the Pacific Campaigns. John Anderson Brown only lived fourteen more years after the first land was sold in Warkworth. He died in 1867 and was buried on Church Hill, overlooking the town he had founded.

Facing farming finances Many dairy farmers are facing difficult financial times as a result of unexpected reductions in dairy pay-outs. This volatility can make it harder to run the business and increases reliance on debt funding. Most banks understand that price volatility is a fact of life and are supportive of the longer term view of dairy farming, but preparation for your bank meeting is essential to obtain the best outcome. Working closely with your accountant on your budget forecast and having them by your side when meeting, can help strengthen your banking relationship. Price volatility makes budgeting difficult. As forecasts change, banks are likely to require updated budgets based on new information and in tough times farmers would benefit from ‘zero-based’ budgets which don’t rely on previous years’ figures. By reviewing all expenses from the ground up with your accountant, spending can focus on milk production and balanced with future productive performance to help get your business into the best shape for next season.

The Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy says: ‘Farmers needed to sit around the table with their accountant or banker to get through the remainder of the year, the medium to long-term outlook is much more positive’. Budgeting can help with funding, avoiding nasty surprises, and tax liabilities can be reduced by proactively estimating lower incomes. The key to surviving tough times is to communicate with your accountant and bank, prepare a budget that minimises losses and focusses on crucial expenses but that is realistic enough to stick to. Be prepared to revisit the budget if events change, such as payout forecasts, keep thinking and keep focussed. We have had great feedback from banks in response to our partnership with farming clients. Now is the right time to talk to an experienced farming accountant at KGA Warkworth and make a plan to get through the winter.

DAIRY COMPLIANCE Investing in compliance infrastructure by Andy Bryenton

As the new season begins in farming, all eyes have been on the success of the recent agricultural field days in the Waikato — a barometer of the health of this vital sector of the economy. Despite a lower than average payout for those in the dairy trade, those commentators who have watched the rural market for many years have been pleased to note that the cyclical nature of agriculture has been recognised — while spending on nonessential items has indeed waned, farmers are still working smart to ensure compliance with the standards expected of them by those who they supply with primary goods. As in any industry, standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced and equitable relationship between the producer and supplier, with guarantees of quality enforced, in this case, for the best of reasons — the health not only of consumers, but of New Zealand’s reputation as a top-grade exporter. Thus, farmers are still investing in the important equipment which allows them to run a modern, healthy and qualitycontrolled operation, whether in dairy,

dry stock or even in cropping. Of course the dairy sector is in the spotlight at this time, and the nature of the goods produced by these hard-working farmers means that their plant and infrastructure are held to rigorous standards. Fonterra’s handbook for suppliers outlines a list of key areas in which contributing dairy farmers must comply, from the purity of water used for operations (including lack of harmful

bacteria and other residues) through to a robust chiller system used to bring milk down to temperature prior to collection. It’s not just the equipment in and around the milking shed which must meet new standards. As an example of wider requirements, Fonterra now requires new, repaired, or structurally upgraded tanker roadway bridges or crossings to be certified to at least 53 tonne, allowing safe access for their fleet. Waterways must be fenced to ensure environmental standards are met, with results in stream and river purity already being felt in the Waikato as a result. These factors, along with the machinery required to hygienically wash down milking sheds and equipment, and the modern milking systems needed to cut back on ills like mastitis, mean

that, season after season, the backbone infrastructure of farms must be kept in good shape, no matter what mother nature or global commerce throw at us. A good example is the robust new systems used to treat dairy effluent — systems which turn what was once an odious problem into a potential source of fertiliser and nutrients. In this arena, farmers have been able to work innovatively within the framework of environmental protective laws to find a sustainable way forward. With the trend toward global free trade pushing further regulation and more exacting measures to ensure milk and meat quality, keeping these vital infrastructural systems at peak efficiency would seem a wise choice, this season as in any other.

Dairy refrigeration efficiency

Dairy farmers will be aware of the new cooling requirements with data logging starting 2018. These articles are to reinforce the benefits of using your farm water as efficiently as possible to pre-cool the milk, this is generally where the biggest energy saving can be made. My name is Ashton Rench and I grew up on my parents dairy farm at Pakaraka. I wanted to be a fitter and turner/tool maker and was offered an apprenticeship with Des Colebrook in Kaikohe as a Refrigeration Engineer. The town supply farmers in Kaikohe all had insulated vats and used the old type water chillers, a series of horizontal tubes with farm water running through the top

tubes. The lower tubes were refrigerated with the milk entering the vats below five degrees centigrade and held in the vat at or below this temperature. Milk cooled in this way tasted better, but now it is about shelf life. Now days, through the winter months, our tests show water temperature is often at 12 degrees centigrade, with the milk entering the vat at 20 degrees. The target temperature should be one degree above the farm water temperature. A simple test is to take the water temperature at its source and the temperature of the milk entering the vat, write down the temperatures time and date. This gives a starting

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

Reduce your Nitrogen bill

by Grant Paton

With nitrification inhibitors such as dicyandiamide (DCD) gone, what options do farmers using synthetic nitrogen fertilisers such as urea, sulphate of ammonia and DAP, have to reduce nitrate leaching? The answer has been out for more than 10 years. A leading soil scientist from a prominent university in New Zealand did the trials and the results were outstanding. A 30-40% reduction in ammonia volatilisation (loss to air) and a 3540% reduction in nitrate leaching (loss to groundwater). These figures basically meant a farmer/ grower using this technology could halve their nitrogen bill. So why wasn’t it published? The only other issue with this technology was the cost of the product needing to be mixed with the nitrogen. The product — soluble humate granules — cost $2500/ tonne and the recommended mixing rate was 5-10% — which basically increased the cost of each nitrogen application by $125250/tonne of nitrogen used. Cost saving During summer, Environmental Fertilisers has been working on this costing issue and have Soluble Humate Granules on the market for $600/tonne. This has significant cost savings by reducing the on-farm costs of nitrogen applications by more than 50%. The company has also developed a urea/humate mix for growers who don’t wish to mix their own soluble humates — and is applied at a reduced rate of 40-

THE ONE STOP ALPACA SHOP 60% of normal nitrogen applications. The key to any nitrogen application is to apply the nitrogen with a carbon source, and this carbon needs to be soluble like urea is. There are huge benefits here for the farmer/grower financially and environmentally. There are a number of soil health benefits that come with adopting this technology. Foliar feeding urea is quite possibly two to three times more efficient than soil applied urea — because of the need for 8-15ml of rain after applying urea to the soil. See our advert on page 5.

China’s doing it right, why can’t we? by Ian Walker

After spending three weeks on a tour through China it was not without a little irony I returned to New Zealand to calls for the banning of swamp kauri exports. Demands for the regulation of sugary drinks, conservationists protesting about lack of progress on climate change, and if you remove the crazy Auckland house market and the rebuild of Christchurch, an economy hitting the rocks. In China, despite what they term an economic slowdown, it is predicted they will have 220 million high net worth individuals by 2020 and I saw plenty of them. It appeared to me that, even though it’s a one party communist state with a lot of political and environmental challenges, China embraces business and private enterprise to a much higher level than we do in New Zealand. In China things are happening and decisions are being made.

Avoid Drink Driving BE THE SOBER D FOR A NIGHT

When China needs a road they build it. In NZ we identify roads of national significance and then spend years and millions of dollars talking about it. During my visit I was able to enjoy free and good quality WiFi while being driven in a bus through hilly countryside for five hours whereas in NZ I struggle to receive decent Internet in a rural town with a population of six thousand. Chinese parents invest considerable time and money in educating their children. A child can easily spend double the time per day at school compared to the New Zealand counterpart. In China people have a desire to improve themselves where we seem to continually desire more without greater effort, obligation, or personal responsibility. Many in New Zealand complain about Chinese coming here to live, speculate on residential housing, or invest in farmland. What I saw was a country with a very large

population of hard working people driven and competing to improve. They all want to do better than some academic living wage decided by government officials and imposed on business whether they are capable of funding or not. We have calls to restrict dairy farming plus make them pay for maintaining our environment including obligations for climate change while at the same time advocating for a living wage and affordable dairy and meat products. While dairy farmers struggle to have any wage at all we have a government advising the dairy industry not to increase exports to Russia because we may tarnish our reputation with our friends in the United States and Europe. These are the same so called friends who have imposed huge import restrictions on our dairy exports and have done for years. Rather than complain and whine about

Asian immigration and investment we should learn from them. If we want an economy that delivers the living wage, reduce child poverty, and have a great environment it’s time we demonstrated some leadership rather than run everything by committee, start making timely decisions, and embrace science, innovation, business, and enterprise. We need to start looking after ourselves politically and economically rather than worrying what others may or may not think. We need to stop knee jerk reactions banning opportunities because of a few noisy individuals and start making well informed objective decisions based on facts. You can’t increase the costs of producing good quality food and expect to pay less for it at the supermarket. Ever ything has cause and consequence and it’s time we started to understand that. I think China does.

Punching above its weight by Andy Bryenton

The accepted wisdom for many years in the world of ATV quads was that the Japanese ‘big three’ had the market covered. Then came the North American invasion which saw new models challenge traditional ideas of price and performance, hotting up an arms race in this sector. Similarly, in utility vehicles, the old order has been shaken up by new tech and sharp pricing from unexpected quarters. Which is why the appearance of Kymco’s range of quad bikes, and their subsequent inroads into Australasia, should come as little surprise. The buying public — especially in the rural sector — have come to be more open minded about brands and

origins, looking beyond what may be a new badge to the underpinning beneath. Hence the success of the MXU 400, Kymco’s entry in the middleweight division of the ATV market. For while the name may be freshly minted in the public psyche, the abilities of this no-nonsense workhorse make it an affordable tool in many areas of farming. Power derives from an overheadcam air cooled 4-stroke mill, displacing 367cc to develop 26 horsepower. This output is mated to a ‘shift on the fly’ 2WD to 4WD system with a dual-

range box, getting those horses to the ground when they are needed. Add in that most vital of modern ATV innovations, true four-wheel engine braking, and a cleverly designed independent rear suspension with a lot of travel, and the Kymco can cut it with Japan and America’s latest and greatest. The MXU 400 also boasts a smooth CVT transmission, which, unlike some, seems certain at all times which ratios

will grant the best grip. All this adds up to a tidy package sitting in the sweet spot between power and fuel economy which Kiwi farmers favour for day-today operations. Add in 447kg towing capacity and room for fencing tools or spray gear, and before the very reasonable price is even mentioned one can see why this new marque has made its mark at both regional and national Field Days.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.

Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

ADVERTORIAL

A valuable workhorse in the field Following its successful launch at last year’s National Fieldays, the New Zealand designed and developed fully electric e3 ATV has gone into production and is receiving outstanding reviews from new owners. Whether working with livestock, in horticulture or on a lifestyle block the e3 is proving to be a very valuable work horse. Malcolm Clark, a far North olive grower described his e3 as ‘an impressive piece of kit’ and Robina Satchel, a Tutira dry stock farmer said her husband Guy was very happy and that e3 is doing everything he wanted it to do. The e3 is a Switch EV Global development. The company is based in Warkworth and specialises in electric propulsion systems using the latest lithium polymer cells which it imports to produce its e3 ATV batteries. The e3 has been developed “because we believe the current offerings for small utility vehicles in farming environments are not where they need to be for a number of reasons”, says Switch EV Global managing director Gerrard Merrick. “The e3 is a totally unique vehicle and there is nothing else like it in the market” he says. “The e3 is considerably safer than current offerings and it has proven itself to be a far more capable vehicle in a range of challenging on-farm conditions negotiating mud and steep terrain. Malcolm Clark said “The boss [Sue — Malcolm’s wife] really likes it — easy to get

on and off and feels planted and stable.” The vehicle seats two people side by side and has a greater load carrying capacity than quad bikes and is supplied with a large tip tray on the back. With two adults aboard it weighs around 400kg and has a combined tray load and towing capacity of 600kg. Malcolm Clark ordered his e3 with a custom tip tray that included a hinged tailgate and 20% extra space for olive bins. “I’m finding the tray really useful as can fill and tip a full load quite easily” says Malcolm. The e3 has a range of 20 — 40 kilometres between charges on farm terrain and because the e3 is 100 percent electric it has fewer moving parts than combustion engines so it is inherently more reliable with significantly lower running costs. With zero emissions and quiet operational noise levels the manufacturers say the machine will have useful applications in conservation areas, in vineyards or indoors in the likes of cowhouses where growers want to avoid carbon monoxide emissions. Robina Satchel said It’s great for the stock movement because of its quietness.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix, it’s just that, dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy. Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. They’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa, is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, low-priced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bang for your buck. It’s a no-frills approach, focused on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a re-imagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four stroke providing 38 horsepower. Even the frame has moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity. The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both

front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners. As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control. All of which should be no surprise, Can Am, like their rivals in both the USA and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive in the ATV world.

What is different, though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty. It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrestle the rural utility quad crown from its contenders, one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for the 2015/16 season.

Rural women turn 90

The first meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union was held on July 28 1925. Over the following year, Mrs C Jackson wrote 2,000 letters to women in the backblocks, encouraging them to join the fledgling organisation. Her mission struck a chord, and 90 years later members past and present have many achievements to celebrate and remember. Accomplishments the organisation has achieved since 1927 include, advocating for fair travel reimbursement for home care workers, speed past school buses advocacy, fundraising for Leptospirosis research, Enterprising Rural Women Awards, and the Let’s Get Plastered for Breast Cancer and Y Front Up to Prostate Cancer fundraising and awareness campaigns to name a few. To celebrate the 90th anniversary in 2015 of the founding of Rural Women New Zealand, the organisation have launched the 90 for 90 Challenge to their members. The aim is for 90 Rural Women New Zealand groups, or members, to make 90 donations during the year in recognition of the 90 years the organisation has been working for rural

communities. This may be a $90 donation to a cause or a person, preferably with a rural aspect, or 90 handcrafted items such as baby singlets or booties donated to a relevant organisation. Together they hope to reach a target of 90 donations. Participants may wish to raise money for their donations, or use existing funds. Donations of all types must be accompanied by a 90 for 90 Challenge information sheet, giving a history of the organisation and the concept behind the project. Further historical information to mark the 90th anniversary is available on their website and can be printed if required. Details of all donations must be made known to the national office so that they can be publicised and tallied up towards the goal. Go to www.ruralwomen.org.nz.
