A new primary industry scholarship focussed on developing future agricultural leaders has been launched this month. The ANZ Future Leaders Scholarship has been developed in conjunction with New Zealand Young Farmers and will offer at least four $10,000 scholarships every year to members who exhibit a strong commitment to a career in the primary sector and have a desire to lift their leadership potential. The scholarship will help NZYF members achieve their potential through a personalised professional development plan. “Both ANZ and New Zealand Young Farmers share a goal of building a more progressive, productive and performance-focussed future for New Zealand agriculture,” said ANZ general manager Agri, Ross Verry. “In the future, farms will need to be run like top New Zealand businesses, with an emphasis on efficiency, performance and profit. Success at national newspaper awards by Paul Campbell

Staff of NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, the Dargaville-based publishers of the Northern Farming Lifestyles, have taken out top awards at the The NZ Community Newspaper Awards held last weekend in Rotorua. Salesperson of the Year went to Betty Willets of Northern Farming Lifestyles and runner-up for Best Junior Feature/ Lifestyle Journalist of the Year was awarded to staff reporter, Ayla Miller. Fellow journalist Ann Morgan was also commended by the awards judges. “The CNA awards are a major event held for independent publishers who were represented by some 85 titles,” said NorthSouth Multi Media managing director, Allan Mortensen. “Our staff winning the awards reinforces the fact that as a media organisation in the Kaipara, our publishing and journalism values, which are based on what are at times classed as ‘old fashioned’ are still very valid in this hi tech, digital age.” Mr Mortensen says with technology today, reading newspapers is still an important part of everyday life for a lot of people. Unlike much of the information communities are exposed to in the digital world, readers of community newspapers can have a degree of comfort that information, articles and news stories in them have been researched, verified and crafted by trained professional journalists. “Picking up the runner-up journalism award at a function of this calibre validates what we do, and our staff do it well. BY AYLA MILLER fter travelling the world Clint tried many a chilli and became addicted to the adrenaline kick he got out of eating the hottest he could find. It was his time in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China that cemented his love of all things hot. “I’ll never forget a dish I had in Laos,” he

said. “I was on a tiny little island called Don Det in the Mekong. I had ordered the Chilli Chicken. When my meal came, I had kind of forgotten about the chilli bit, and with my chopsticks picked up about five green beans and a piece of chicken. It was only after chewing away and swallowing that I realised I had just eaten about three very hot chillies. “I

them into sauce down the road.” Fire Dragon Chillies are a small family run company and the sauce is produced in a kitchen not far from Clint’s home. Demand for his sauce is definitely growing he says and at the moment he is running the operation single–handedly with the occasional help from his two young boys, aged eight and nine. “The longer you are around the more people want your sauce,” he says. He grows around 1,000 plants with about 70–80 different cultivars. “As we are growing we are collecting our own seed and we get hybridised versions as well coming through. Maybe one day we will grow the hottest chilli in the world,” he laughs. As for the secret to growing good chillies, Clint says it is to make sure the plants get plenty of water, sunshine and warm temperatures. “Around 28 degrees is probably the ideal temperature. Our hot houses can get up to 40 degrees in the summer depending on how much wind there is coming through and I’ve seen them clock about 50 degrees before.”

His favourite part of the whole seed to sauce process is harvesting. “You get into a little meditative state and just pick your chillies and go through the plants.” Not only does Clint enjoy growing and eating chillies, he also enjoys watching other people eat them and helps to organise chilli eating competitions all over the country. “I enjoy taking the sauce on the road and going to the chilli champs. You meet some interesting characters. I’ve made some really good friends over the years and we have all been brought together by chillies.” The chilli eating contests usually go for about an hour and contestants aren’t allowed to drink anything the whole time, although there is a glass of milk and a beer if it all gets too much. “It’s like a chilli marathon. That’s what ‘chilli heads seem to like. They like the harder music and the more extreme sports and live life a bit more dangerously.”

he idea behind the IHC Calf and Rural Scheme was dreamed up by Norm Cashmore, a Taranaki farmer who offered a pair of gumboots to every farmer donating a calf to the Taranaki branch of IHC more than 30-years-ago. “Mick Murphy, a farmer in Marlborough visited Norm to see how his idea worked and was so impressed he decided it could be implemented nationally. He convinced the members of the fundraising committee of the New Zealand Council of IHC to give the idea a go,” said scheme coordinator Lynda

Young-Kennedy. “Mick was involved in the Marlborough branch of IHC and was given permission for a pilot project in 1982 and by the end of the trial, 770 calves donated by farmers had raised $110,000 and the scheme was launched nationwide the following year.” A great believer in the personal faceto-face approach he set up a network of canvassers to visit farmers and ask them to sign up to donate a calf. “Mick visited stock agents who agreed to auction the animals free of charge and he met with transport companies who offered to provide the transport at no cost. He then realised that if he wanted to go to all the branches, he needed money,” said Ms Young-Kennedy. “First on his list was gumboot manufacturer Skellerup. They gave him $2,500 and stock agents Dalgety came up with another $2,500 so IHC could advertise the scheme nationwide. In 1987 Wrightson, now PGG Wrightson, became the official primary sponsor of the scheme.” Often IHC and its service arm IDEA Services is the only organisation providing crucial support for people with an intellectual disability and their families in an area. Brian and Penny Coutts from the Hikurangi area have been donating and canvassing for the scheme for 27 years. “We originally became involved because the local area coordinator Noel Reed asked us if we would participate,” said Mrs Coutts. “It is a very good opportunity to help people locally. When we first joined everything was done with a clipboard and sheets of paper. Technology has certainly made things a lot more sophisticated and easier. “We find farmers are very generous and supportive around the area. Many have been onboard with us for 27 years too. The IHC are very positive to work

alongside and they are very grateful for the help they receive. “Contributors like the fact that the money they raise stays in the local area and helps families close to home. It is nice to be a part of someone else’s life nearby. Farmers can be very proud that they are a part of one of the biggest fundraising initiatives for the organisation. “As canvassers we see the satisfaction people get from raising their calves for the IHC — it is very encouraging. Every donation makes a big difference, and it is helping those who have quite a lot of challenges in life.” Farmers can put an animal through a sale at anytime. ell known in Northland farming circles for his work as a vet at the Dargaville Veterinary Clinic, Graeme left this position two years ago and has been working as a dairy farm consultant, as well as starting his own business Bovine Production Solutions Ltd, a pasture monitoring service. As a family man with four young children, full-time work for both he and his wife Joanna no longer seemed appropriate. Now he is working outside the confines of the veterinary practice, and enjoying having flexible hours for more quality time with the family as

well as making positive contributions on clients’ farms. “Working at the vet clinic was a bit like being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. You are fixing things that are broken. I wanted to help stop negative things from happening which I find much more rewarding,” said Graeme. Born in Ruawai, he has worked for 15 years in total at Dargaville Veterinary Clinic, beginning in 1994. He is now following his passion and using his competitive nature to help farmers and assist them in getting the most out of their pastures with his monitoring service. and collates it into graphs that can be easily read and used for comparison to try and accomplish the delicate balance between grass length and digestibility. “I got into pasture monitoring because I could see the benefits of it. There were a number of people who were also keen to try it out and were looking for someone to do it for them.” As a vet he saw first hand how most diseases affecting cattle were influenced by the conditions the animals were living in and believes that improving animal health and welfare means more farm sustainability. “As a consultant my two big focusses are growing, management of pasture and animal production. It’s about getting that balance right and that is the key aspect of making a positive impact.” Graeme says the length of the grass determines the energy ingested which then determines milk production. By measuring the width, breadth and magnitude of the grass he can help farmers gain a deeper understanding of what their pastures are doing and what kind of output they can expect which he believes is especially important in the Kaipara and Northland area. “Here we are very variable so it is important farmers are in tune with what’s happening. “Without data you are relying on adjectives. Having the data means you can compare it to a target and everyone is then speaking the same language.” He and his sole employee, Matthew, use two technologies to gather the information. One is a rising plate measure which calculates the

From there an average pasture cover is calculated and is then turned into a ‘feed wedge’ which is a visual depiction to help farmers assess what grass they will have available in the upcoming weeks. “It’s really rewarding being part of making good decisions and not spending my working day being at the bottom of the cliff,” Graeme says. He is also very active in multi-sport and adventure racing which suits his competitive nature. Although it

might seem pasture management and adventure racing have nothing in common, he says the core concept of only getting out what you put in is the same. “These are hard times and it is just about pushing through. I firmly believe we make our own luck and now it is more important than ever to do this. Pasture monitoring is a valuable tool that should be on all farms. “If your costs can be spread out through more efficient milk production in tough times it will help to keep your head above water. As a community we can get better results out of the resources we have — the flow on effect from that impacts everyone.”

This group’s common birth range is 1982—2000. According to the paper the Generation Y consumers are waiting in the wings to hold power and shape future markets. Conventional producers should be very concerned about their future direction as the chemical age passes its use-by-date. Caitlin Bingham is one of those future voices. Young, hard working and environmentally conscious, this 21 year old was raised on meat and three veg. She has moved away in favour of what she sees as clean living. Caitlin only buys fresh produce labelled organic, however she is fully aware of products that claim to be organic, but are not! These false claims of products being organic has impacted on the growth of the organic movement. However, today’s consumers are fully aware of organic certified logos which guide them towards genuine products. During our Road Show this year we are pushing for the need to move away from chemical production based around the

new consumer demand for safe certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an animal friendly, sustainable and ecofriendly manner, this is the new demand and it’s increasing globally. The chemical age is well past its use by date as antibiotics, drenches, herbicides and the list of rescue remedies fail to do their job creating more problems as pests, diseases and weeds have become immune to chemicals. The underlying problem is synthetic, soluble nutrients and the chemical fertiliser’s nutrient requirement of basically only providing artificial nitrogen and superphosphate to plants leaving all the other essential elements out of the equation. All of life is dependent upon mineral for health and vitality, today, it is lacking in most foods and this is heavily endorsed with the huge lift in vet clinics, medical centres, alternative centres and alternative medicines, as people are clamouring to try to stay healthy. Young farmers trek to base camp

A group of New Zealand Young Farmers are planning an expedition to Everest Base Camp to raise money for a Nepalese agricultural charity and a New Zealand based charity which is yet to be confirmed. Led by 27-year-old Denise Knop of the Bay of Islands club, the Northern region of Young Farmers aim to do the 26 day trip in April 2018. Known for her adventurous ideas, Miss Knop said initially her idea was at first met with disbelief but once it was explained many thought it would be a great adventure. Miss Knop has recently begun a new role managing a 700 cow farm outside Kaikohe for the Mangakahia Valley Dairies Trust with her partner, and said the trip was ‘something positive’ in light of the difficult conditions many in the industry were facing. “I’m always challenging myself to something new and this was an exciting trip to do.” All NZYF members who were keen to join the expedition from around New Zealand would be welcomed, she said. “We’d love to challenge other regions to join us.” The Northern region of NZYF has committed to developing leadership skills and this was part of that challenge. “I love the leadership development that NZYF encourages. The organisation has given me the opportunity to network and meet heaps of people of similar age in my area.” The trip will include two days in Kathmandu with nine days walking

The plight of the dairy industry Some 800 dairy farmers attended the DairyNZ conference at Mystery Creek to hear Bill English, and other keynote speakers say the government was extremely grateful and thanked dairy farmers for their valuable contribution to the NZ economy. Mr English also recognised that more than 85% of NZ dairy farmers’ businesses were at risk due to the current milk price crisis and that some farmers will not make it through. The NZ dairy industry has a history of innovative owner operators progressing through from wages to sharemilking, to farm ownership. The path to farm ownership taken by these farmers has become increasingly difficult to follow with increasing herd size and increasing land values. Many state that achieving farm ownership without family assistance is no longer possible. Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings told the DairyNZ conference that Fonterra had to start telling the world the New Zealand story. He said the #431AM promotion that Fonterra has initiated, featuring Richie McCaw, would be a major marketing plank in moving forward to promote Fonterra to the world. I believe Theo’s presentation to the conference demonstrated that he is completely out of touch with what is happening on the farm. He seemed to be detached from the audience. I doubt that Richie McCaw, apart from a bit of PR work, is going to be able to change the economic plight of the industry one iota. The quality of other speakers was excellent. Rabobank’s Tim Hunt spelt out very clearly what the dairy industry worldwide is facing. The fact is the world has too much milk and it could take a significant amount of time before farmer returns recover. On a wider scale, the European

Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, is to meet Russian President Putin in an endeavour to settle the current European trade embargo against Russia. The European farmers, particularly the French, are now demonstrating and burning their agriculture products because they do not support the current trade bans against Russia. In the United States many Americans are protesting against the current political establishment. While the world is awash with milk and other dairy products, there is a worldwide food crisis affecting more than three billion people, half the world’s population, who are short of food. What is missing is the political will on the part of world governments, industry and finance, to support the alternatives that are needed to correct it.

Wool market rebounds well after slight stagger After what had been a very healthy season for wool selling, with almost total clearances at every auction, the market got the staggers on April 21 in Christchurch as exporters struggled to find homes for the relatively small offering of less than 10,000 bales. However by May 5 the market had taken a turn for the better again with most of the losses in April reversed, and on May 19 in Christchurch a good strong tone had emerged once again. The mix of wool types offered for sale during late April through until mid-May was of a wide variety with many drought affected, but mainly crossbred fleece (including second-shear fleece), crossbred lamb’s fleece, plus crossbred oddments. Several lines of crossbred lamb’s fleece were re-offered during May after failing earlier in the calendar year to reach grower reserves, however a number of growers remained disappointed as limited demand for lamb’s was obvious. A few half-bred/ Corriedale fleece types (including a handful of hogget types) and a selection of oddments both fine and coarse, made up the balance of the offerings. Analyses of South Island wool auctions during the April and May period showed that perhaps a larger than usual proportion of the wools catalogued

were affected by vegetable matter contamination (vm, eg seeds, straw, sticks, etc), much of which can prove difficult to remove during processing, simply because of the nature of the wool types. The presence of vm, whilst not necessarily of concern in some wool types destined for a worsted processing system, can create problems when processed via the woolen and/or semiworsted systems. Along with the more noticeable (than in earlier catalogues) vm contamination to many of the crossbreds, the strength of the Kiwi dollar, both at its eight-month high near US$0.70 around April 21, and its softer US$0.67 around May 19, was also an influence in assisting price fluctuation during the period. At the beginning of each season, exporters and brokers meet to agree auction sale dates for the ensuing wool season and to predict their best estimates concerning bale numbers, likely to be offered at each of those auctions.

The pre-season work is necessary not only because the auction system remains the predominant first point of trade for the local wool industry, but also and more importantly, to assist New Zealand Wool Exporters assess their financial, wool scouring and shipping requirements for the following twelve months and to advise international customers of the anticipated availability and approximate quantities of specific wool types throughout the season. For the majority of the current auction season to date, all brokers have struggled to fill their catalogues, up to the originally rostered bale quantity for each sale, due mainly to the seemingly ever decreasing New Zealand sheep population, something which has, in itself, created an urgency from exporters bidding to ensure they secure their requirements. Despite fluctuating prices, when compared to last year at a similar time as well as to the previous couple of seasons, the overall depth and strength of the market for at least the foreseeable future appears very good, as most of New Zealand’s wool trading partners have indicated their desire to continue including our wonderful wool fibres in their finished products. Recent visits to New Zealand by several overseas manufacturers have proven

extremely positive. June 2, 16, and 30 are scheduled for the final Christchurch auctions of the 2015/16 wool season. Hopefully the market will continue to be buoyant. That’s my view.

All forms of holiday accommodation from backpacker hostels, campgrounds, motels and hotels, to the domestic comfort of bed and breakfast, home stays and farmstays are available across the district. A short drive to Ninety Mile Beach attractions including sailing, surfcasting, diving and fishing — including deep sea fishing and surfing are available. The annual Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing contest is set for the weekend of July 2 and 3. The contest is the highlight of the northern freshwater fishing calendar and has been running for approximately 35 years, with regular trout anglers coming most years to try proving their skills and hoping for some luck against their counterparts. Lakes Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare are a group of three lakes known as the Kai Iwi Lakes, and are freshwater dune lakes 30 kilometres north of Dargaville off State Highway 12. Lakes Waikare and Taharoa are stocked each year with rainbow trout fingerlings from the Rotorua hatchery. Fish and Game New Zealand, Northland Region’s manager, Rudi Hoetjes says the annual release of fingerlings will be released into Lakes Taharoa and Waikare in early June to take advantage of abundant autumn feed, allowing fish to reach takeable size within six to eight months of their release. “Fishermen who have not experienced angling Kai Iwi style, should make this contest the year to sample Northland’s wonderful trout, and experience Northland’s hospitality and Northland Fish and Game Council’s family focussed premiere fishing event. “The lakes have been fishing very well over the past couple of years with some very nice trout being caught by anglers with a range of methods as allowed under the Northland Anglers

since DIRA was introduced in 2001 with many new competitors, significantly increased competition and a robust and transparent milk price regime in place. Fonterra believes that DIRA needs to evolve so the industry can create as much value for New Zealand and its dairy farmers as possible. As a company Fonterra sees a number of positive aspects in the discussion document released over the weekend. “In particular, we welcome the proposal that we are no longer required to sell milk to large processors who predominantly export their products. We’re also pleased to see the proposal that remaining processors are able to access less of our milk over coming years,“ said group director of Cooperative Affairs, Miles Hurrell. “However we are surprised the Government has not taken the opportunity to make broader changes to the legislation,” he said. “The requirement to accept all milk acts as a disincentive to Fonterra to invest in the right kind of assets and undermines the industry’s ability to grow value added business and maximise returns to NZ farmers, as we are all committed to do.” The government is proposing only that Fonterra no longer have to collect milk from new dairy conversions.

Veteran sees big future for Northland The importance of forestry to Northland often goes unrecognised but a local veteran of the forestry industry sees a great future for the region. Andy Warren, regional manager for Rayonier Matariki Forests, has been in the industry for more than 40 years, the last 23 with his current employer. He started working in the industry at 16 years old as a labourer and then became a ranger trainee before graduating to a junior supervisor. This was followed by successive positions involving 14 moves in eight years around the Northland region. He knows the business and the region well and views forestry as a dynamic industry providing plenty of opportunity for Northland. “Northland forests are unique in the fact they produce a very high quality wood for engineering grade products and very strong structural products which are in demand both locally and internationally,” said Andy. “There are opportunities to grow the industry, especially with Maori land owners working to identify appropriate opportunities for afforestation. This will deliver employment for local youth and the potential to develop commercial ventures to benefit these groups and the community.” Forestry continues to be a significant contributor to the prosperity of the Northland region with its contribution to GDP ranging from 4–8 per cent annually, featuring above tourism and third to dairying and beef. Since 2010, logs and processed forest products have contributed to 65-75 per cent of Marsden Point wharf output. The shift from Port Whangarei to the new facility at Marsden Point was in part driven by the anticipated wall of wood available in the north. The industry directly employs approximately 850 people within forests

or driving trucks which accounts for 11 per cent of the region’s primary industry workforce. “People coming into the industry can make a career out of it if they choose to. There is so much variety and challenge,” said Andy. “You can start out as a crew member and end up owning your own contracting business, or use your scientific, technological or engineering degrees across many different facets of the business — there is literally something for everyone.” One of Andy’s career highlights has been working on sand-dune forestry during the 1970s and 80s when Aupouri Peninsula and Pouto were being planted as ‘protection forests’ to nullify the threat from windblown west coast sands engulfing the pastoral lands and smothering lakes and wetlands. “Taking wasteland and turning it into production land, producing logs, providing employment and creating something sustainable was a very exciting project and it provided the model for further areas.” Andy adds another highlight from his lengthy tenure in the industry. “I have been around long enough to have attended blessings prior to harvesting of trees that I planted 27 years ago. Everything comes full circle and forestry’s cyclical and sustainable nature is one of the attractions of the industry for me. “With Northland’s forestry industry gradually maturing, it is great to see a forum such as the Northland Forestry Awards to celebrate this vibrant industry and recognise excellence across all levels of operations within a peer group setting.”

Here’s what else it means. Farmers will need to take greater responsibility for adding value to the products coming off their farms. With recent low commodity prices, we’ve been critical towards dairy companies for not producing and marketing value-added products from the milk sent to them. We’ve expected the factory to add the value and increase our return. Fair enough. I think that’s a critical part of Fonterra’s job. But what if some of the onus is on us to supply Fonterra with a better value-added product to begin with? Products like organic milk. Wouldn’t that put Fonterra in a stronger position to maximise our payout in a global market that clearly wants chemicalfree products? A small group of farmers are discovering that it does. These farmers, either certified organic or close to going organic, were brave enough to significantly alter their management practices some time ago — $9.20/kg ms will be the reward for their foresight. Good for them. But where does that

leave conventional farmers? We need a shift in our thinking. It’s impossible to run a farm without penicillin, weed sprays and pour-ons, and urea? I thought so when I first contemplated the idea. But I learned that I’d become brainwashed over the years by the companies that made the chemicals. These corporate giants with their big marketing budgets were constantly promoting a version of science that lead me to think I needed the chemicals they were selling. At some point however, I focussed on proving that good production was not determined by a high usage of nitrogen. At that time the farm was growing 14 tonne of dry matter per hectare while using 150 units of nitrogen per hectare. After adjusting my management, the farm grew 19 tonne dm/ha from applying only 30 units of nitrogen per hectare. A 35 per cent increase in production with 80 per cent less artificial nitrogen. Over 10 years, I challenged and successfully changed a lot of conventional practices. Others went even further than I did. They’re the ones that will collect $9.20/kg ms next year. If you’re thinking of joining the trend to move away from a heavy dependence on chemicals, can I suggest you take this first step: sack your conventional thinking consultant. He can’t possibly think outside the chemical square because it’s the chemical system itself that gives him an income.

Do we have Laminitis? I have just been running some trimming workshops on the West Coast and found myself regularly confronted with the continuing acceptance that physical force is the main contributor to lameness in New Zealand, together with a reluctance to accept that Laminitis is a very real problem here. So, do we have laminitis in New Zealand? There are people who believe we don’t because ‘it has not been proven’. What difference would it make? Why would we care? I believe that if you really want to solve a problem, you need to know what causes the problem. How else are you going to solve it? I believe that if we try to keep lameness under control by solving all the physical issues then we are only solving the symptoms. So, what is my point? When I talk about laminitis I am talking about an unhealthy live tissue in the hoof caused by internal imbalances. The symptoms of an unhealthy live tissue are haemorrhaging, holes and cracks, deformed hoofs and just about anything else we see wrong with the hoof. Most people mistakenly assume that all those symptoms are caused by standing on stones and other ‘sharp objects’, or ‘pushing cows too hard’ and therefore adding too much pressure on the hooves. The problem here is that this has never been proven to be the case. However, the fact that those symptoms are mainly a domestic cow issue and not so much a wild cow issue shows that there has to be more going on than just physical forces. I would argue that a cow in the wild is a lot harder on her hooves than a domestic cow on our farms. The fact that those symptoms are more cow-related than hoof-related raises questions. Why are those symptoms symmetrical on both feet on most cows? That doesn’t make sense if it was caused by physical force. Also, why do we see haemorrhaging up on the dorsal wall? How could physical force be the cause of that? Why do we see the outer claw deformed much more often than the inner claw? Why do most cows go lame on the rear hooves if they only carry 40% of the weight? Why do we see mostly

the outside claws displaying these symptoms if this is supposed to be the claw with the most protection? Why does it have a positive effect on the cow when we take some of that protection away by trimming? Think about it. How do you explain all those things from a physical force point of view? Research overseas has shown that diet and stress have a major impact on lameness. I know we are in New Zealand, but if it looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, it waddles like a duck and it flies like a duck it probably is a duck. We need to understand this properly because it will affect our management style — all of a sudden, controlled starvation becomes a problem rather than a tool, only one water trough may not be enough, and having cows out of the paddock for long periods of time becomes an issue, and the list goes on. I do not understand why people deny that laminitis is in dairy cows in New Zealand. I do not see any reason for that especially when the evidence so clearly points in that direction. Just for the record, I believe that just about every cow in New Zealand has some degree of laminitis in their feet. In the majority of cases it is not severe enough to be a problem for the cow. Stock movement weed warning With dairy farmers moving stock and equipment across the country in the annual Gypsy Day migration, which of course lasts through June in real terms, they are being warned to avoid moving the invasive pest weed, velvetleaf, along with their stock. Thousands of sharemilkers load their cows into stock trucks or herd stock on roads and move equipment and families to new farms and the Ministry for Primary Industries warns this mass movement could also move velvetleaf seed to other properties. “Seeds from this invasive weed can be moved to new locations in cattle dung, in their hooves and on farm equipment,” MPI’s David Yard says. “There are some simple management measures farmers can employ now to reduce this risk, but the key is the ‘now’.” Mr Yard says if cows have been grazing fodder beet crops where velvetleaf is present, it is important they are moved off those crops at least 24 hours before movement. “In fact, ideally we recommend that stock do not graze weed-infested areas within three days of their move. By keeping stock out of infested areas for those last three days, it will allow time for them to empty out before transfer. “Farmers are also encouraged to stand stock off green feed before they

are transported because that generates less effluent and reduces the risk of effluent ending up on roads and in waterways. Ensure stock have access to water and dry feed at this time.” The ministry also recommends stock movements are recorded for up to a week after they are moved out of velvetleaf infested grazing so that these areas can be monitored in future for any sign of velvetleaf growth. “Farmers should advise stock truck operators that there could potentially

be seed contamination present in stock truck effluent and this effluent must be disposed of in an approved effluent disposal site. “It is also important that good machinery hygiene is practised anytime a machine is moved between infected properties. Remove all visible soil and plant matter that might spread velvetleaf, including equipment used to lift a fodder beet crop, transport an infested fodder beet crop or cultivate a new crop on previously infested paddocks.”

That’s why the focus is on North American power sports giant Polaris, who are far from content simply to slug it out for dominance in the world of ATVs and snowmobiles. As the masters of both the Victory and Indian brands of road bike, Polaris are happy to foster a little rivalry between the ‘kids’. Though in this case, the differences between the classic cool of the Indian Scout and the menacing, muscle-carinspired Victory Octane put them in two very different classes of their own. And their aim is a two-pronged attack on the dominance of the elephant in the room — Harley Davidson. The Scout does more than just tip its hat to the classic, retro style of its famous forebears — and the speed record monster built by Kiwi Burt Munro. By contrast, the Octane sports a longer profile, bigger wheels and an aggressively modern ‘blacked out’ look. While both bikes share about thirty per cent of their parts, including the fraternal adoption of a clever aluminium and steel frame layout, the finished look, feel and handling of both machines is as different as a precision chef’s knife

Turn up the voltage battery tech may hold the key to not just more efficient charging times for cars — but for computers, airships, robotics, medical prosthetics — anything which needs electrical power. Tesla’s previous luxury tourer, the Model S, literally left V8 supercars in its wake, with a 0–100km/h time under 3 seconds. That hurt and Tesla have

When Mercedes-Benz invented the modern concept of the car in the latter days of the 1800s, there was still plenty of fight left in the horse and cart. Sure, the concept of a ‘motor carriage’ may have been touted as the environmental saviour of its day — imagine cities buried in the inevitable ‘byproduct’ of all that horse feed — but surely thousands of years of history wouldn’t just disappear. Testing the boundaries The team at Rouse Motorcycles are holding their third annual open days giving people the opportunity to trial a variety of farm bikes and all-terrain vehicles. “It is a great opportunity for those who have been to the National Fieldays to come and play with the products and test their boundaries in the environment they would use them in, particularly on farms,” said company director, Shayn Rouse. The idea presents a range of Can-Am, Polaris and Yamaha motorcycle products. “The event happens in real farm conditions across from our premises here in Hikurangi. This time of the year is the best time to be able to showcase what we sell because with the weather being quite wet you can see exactly what each product is capable of achieving. “We can present 14–15 demonstrations in one place over the three days so the customers who can’t make it on one day have the opportunity to have a go on another.” Rouse Motorcycles will have specials available for the event as a carry over from the National Fieldays. “Basically in summertime you can drive a bike any where around the farm with relative ease, but this is a great opportunity at this time of year because you get to trial and push the bikes to their full capacity in real farm conditions,”

Expansion plans come to fruition It’s quite usual to hear of a large, multinational corporation opening a new branch office in a small New Zealand town, bringing a successful formula but ultimately sending profits back to either Auckland or, more predictably, overseas. Thankfully local Northland business Gas and Tyre have been doing things a bit out of the ordinary since their inception in Dargaville, and that’s part of the reason they are now embarking on a new chapter of growth — in central Whangarei. It’s been a meteoric rise for the team behind the big orange and black buildings, now situated in Waipapa, Kaitaia, Ruakaka, Whangarei and Dargaville. From a small operation in a humble shed, hard work has paid off, leading to alliances with major international brands such as Nokian and Mickey Thompson. With customers as varied as forestry operators, rural contractors, road freight fleets and ordinary families, the ‘secret’ to that rapid growth has been clear. It’s also been no real secret at all. Fair prices, good advice, and a willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ have all played their part. That’s not just good business rhetoric either, for some of the fleet service drivers and technicians who wear the Gas and Tyres colours, going above and beyond might mean heading out in the darkness of a cold morning to get a big rig rolling. It could equally

mean getting a tractor back into the field during time-critical planting or reaping, or heading out into the forest to fix up a skidder that’s stopped a multi-million dollar forestry operation in its tracks. The hard work recently has been of a different nature, of course — constructing a whole new base of operations to tackle a slightly different market. The Whangarei store may be a new kind of location — perhaps a bit more urban than the other Gas and Tyre satellites. The same kind of attitude
