Many towns and townships are hugely dependent on our rural economy. The question arises how we can further help to grow this industry in Northland. The primary sector in Northland is telling us about an ongoing shortage of skilled workers, influenced somewhat by our coronavirus immigration settings. If we need to look domestically for these workers, then we can enthusiastically relay the breadth of careers that sit under the primary production umbrella. It goes well beyond traditional agriculture, horticulture and red meat to include areas such as biosecurity as an example. Introducing students at an early age to farming as a career option will not meet the immediate need today
but will continue to be an important early pipeline to growing the primary production workforce. Water for irrigation and storage is an increasingly urgent discussion in Northland. We remain supportive of policy settings that build this infrastructure. Environmental management is top of mind for many Northland producers, especially with the soon to be released report from the climate change commission. This report will describe a climate change budget, electric vehicle settings and a range of other policies that will require actions from everyone, not just primary producers. I started by thanking our rural community, and I want to conclude by doing so again. Thank you for being the backbone of the Northland economy.

Councils, their elected representatives and their wider ratepayers across Northland and the rest of the country are now waiting to discover the full detail of the government’s controversial Three Waters plan to tackle the country’s drinking, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure before making a decision for or against. challenges facing our water infrastructure are too great for councils alone,” as she released 600 pages of reports with information on council water reticulation and resources. These papers say an investment of between $120 billion and $185 billion is needed during the next 30 years to ensure New Zealand’s drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure meets acceptable public health and environmental standards. “The reports also highlight how the national water infrastructure reforms would create an extra 5,900–9,300 jobs countrywide between 2022 and 2051,” Nanaia Nanaia Mahuta — Local Government Minister Mahuta said. “Together, the reports confirm the range from $1,900 to $13,900. Under need for major reform to upgrade and reform proposals with five providers, maintain our water infrastructure, protect those figures range from $800 to our environment and avoid unaffordable $1,800. With three providers, the range increases to household bills.’’ is $800 to $1,600. She said without reform, average household bills in 2051 are forecast to

The government is working on a proposal to combine the country’s 67 council-owned and managed water services into a small number of publicly owned providers. Just how the reforms will unfold across New Zealand was expected in March this year, but now they are due in July. “Until we have information on the full details of the proposal, we have nothing on which to base an informed decision,” says Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith. “At the present time, it is an option to opt-out of the government plan, as has the Whangarei District Council and Auckland Council. In our case, we remain at the table to see what unfolds. “However, the government may make inclusion mandatory.” Dr Smith said the loss of water oversight would reduce council revenues by some 20 per cent — a significant reduction. His concern is echoed in small councils across the country that centralisation means local council operations become eroded to a central authority. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta has said that “the affordability

Carole and Frank Giron arrived in New Zealand 15 years ago from Tahiti and have since created a retreat and a bee experience.
“W
e love Tahiti but we were on a very isolated island. My brother was living in the USA and moved to New Zealand. He told us that he found the perfect place to raise a child,” says Carole. “We came to Takou Bay for a vacation and loved it. We had a lodge in Tahiti and Frank was a black pearl grafter. We sold our business and moved to New Zealand. “Frank couldn’t do his job here because you cannot graft on to paua shell to make the pearl as it will bleed to death. That is why you only get half a pearl from a paua.” Frank decided to become a queen bee breeder as the formula is similar to grafting pearls.
“He studied beekeeping at university and worked for a company in Kerikeri. We also established a holiday destination called Cocozen at Takou Bay, which attracted Tahitian people to New Zealand. We have three chalets in a bush setting with beautiful views. “We designed our chalets and used macrocarpa and ti tree to make the furniture with New Zealand art and craft to create a Kiwi atmosphere. Covid was a big deal as the travel stopped so we now cater for a lot of yoga retreats and Frank is creating a Bee House.” This is based on the theory that breathing in the air from bees has therapeutic benefits. “There are no Bee Houses in New Zealand at this time. You have no contact

Frank uses his pearl propagation skills he gained in Tahiti to now breed queen bees in New Zealand with the bees but there are eight hives behind a mesh in the house. The hive houses create a soothing atmosphere and people find the experience can relieve stress and anxiety. “I used to make my own soap, shampoo and body wash for the lodge so I have expanded that to diversify the honey business. I created a skin care range called L’Artisan Honey New Zealand using our kanuka, macadamia, bush and manuka honey. As honey producers, making our own products makes us a bit different. “I now use someone who specialises in making the products and has the licences to make the products. Our daughter Tea created the labels with native birds because we wanted to show the birds we have here, the bush and the hives. The bush honey has the wood pigeon, the kanuka links to the fantail and the manuka honey has the tui. “We use our honey, pollen and propolis. Propolis is a resin bees find on trees to fix holes in the hive and is said to have antibiotic qualities. Honey shampoo is soft on the hair and creates
volume and you don’t need conditioner. “Frank focusses on the queen bee breeding as it is a technical process, that is why most beekeepers focus on honey or bees for other people.” Frank’s use of tools is key to his success. “It is really linked to tool usage and the preciseness of his hands. It is very similar to working with Mother of Pearl to breed pearls and that experience has enhanced his ability. “He started with two hives and we have produced honey for 10 years, and for six years now he has not fed the bees sugar during winter. We leave a box of honey for them to survive and we have noticed they are much healthier and don’t get sick. It means we don’t get as much honey ourselves but it is better for them than sugar and we have happy bees. “A bee only lives 40 days but a queen bee can live up to four years. The queen lays eggs and is fed while the workers have a busy life building the hive, gathering the nectar and caring for the babies. We began with cosmetics last

The Giron family are currently building a Bee House as a unique guest experience November. It is about turning one activity into another to survive nowadays. When you just have one product you need to find new ideas to work with it. “Each product uses a limited amount of honey. The products use raw honey that is blended and all the ingredients are natural. We know exactly where the bush honey comes from here in Takou Bay and people can visit the hives with Frank. The macadamia honey comes from orchards in Kerikeri, and we know where our manuka and kanuka comes from.
“L’Artisan means a small production batch in French. The chalet experience includes access to the pool, sports room, yoga room and spa room. We also do yoga retreats and our guests utilise the Kerikeri eateries. “We have a yoga tutor come from Tahiti twice a year when she can, and we also work with a lady from Kerikeri for yoga retreats. “We have the L’Artisan Honey New Zealand Facebook page for people to follow us. We are lucky living here in New Zealand, we love it as much as Tahiti.”

THE MAGIC OF MUSHROOMS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Itay and Ora Simhony never realised when they lived in Israel that one day they would be specialist mushroom growers in Mangawhai at Ora’s Farm.
O
ra’s Farm brings consumers natural, exotic and nutrientdense mushrooms and mushroom products. “We were born in Israel, and moved to Holland when Itay worked in the super yacht and boating industry before the crisis in 2002,” says Ora. “We had our four children there and then came to Mangawhai as he worked in China and I got a teaching position here 20 years ago. For years we had a dream of building a farm and one day decided it was time to do it together. “Our children used to say that our generation destroyed the world so we thought we would do something to fix it and here we are, growing exotic mushrooms in Mangawhai.”
The couple grow oyster, pink oyster, shiitake, lion’s mane, which is known as coral tooth in New Zealand, enoki and pioppino. “Mushrooms are a very big challenge to grow successfully and that is what we find exciting. They each have their own culture and conditions they like to grow in. Research shows that they have valuable medicinal or nutrient properties and they are now one of the top subjects of the pharmaceutical and natural healing world. It is said lion’s mane can help prevent dementia and memory loss. “Mushrooms have both culinary and medical uses in Asian countries. Holland is an empire of mushrooms alongside China. The dutch have developed

amazing systems for cultivation. Lion’s mane are a bit sweet and are rich in colour and taste. They are different from shiitake and oyster. I call the pink oyster a crazy girl while the shitkate is very earthy and stronger in taste. “To us, growing mushrooms is a win for the community, the people and the environment. Educating people about mushrooms really is something that has to be done. “Our mushrooms are grown according to New Zealand standards. The shiitake is MPI licensed while the oyster, pink oyster and lion’s mane are New Zealand strains. These varieties began being grown by people who love growing mushrooms. “The demand for exotic types is now sought after at markets and restaurants. People now think about taking care of nature and what health benefits their food has. They want to know where their food comes from and how it is grown before it gets to their table. “Every mushroom has different tastes and nutritional properties. The oyster and pink oyster can be used just like button mushrooms. Shiitake is mostly used in gourmet cooking and 150 grams of mushrooms per week is said to boost your immune system. “Enoki is very popular in Japanese cuisine. It looks like a bunch of flowers. The New Zealand strain has a golden colour in it but they come white from growing them in the darkness. Pippino is the Italian name. In New Zealand they are known as Tewaka, and are popular with Maori people.
“We grow small batches and every one of them has their own food source. Some like hardwood, some like straw. Some like humidity while others need a certain temperature. It is very challenging and that is what we love about them. “Exotic mushrooms need to be cooked before eating to break the selfprotective barrier they have. We cook them in garlic, butter, salt and pepper. Once cooked you can do whatever you like with them like adding wine and cream or mixing them in the salads. “Some people use shiitake as a meat replacement as they are full of protein, vitamins and fibre. I believe people should always cook mushrooms and do their own research regarding possible allergies and so they know what they are dealing with. “It is safer to buy mushrooms from a retailer. If you pick them in a field, make sure you know which ones you are picking. The part we eat is called the fruit while the mushroom grows underneath the earth. “We first inoculate a substrate with the mushroom strain and incubate them for several weeks in the dark. The fruit begins after a shock. Some like fire to begin, and some need rain and nice weather. “By opening the mushroom bags and giving them light, humidity and oxygen after they have been in darkness the fruiting process begins, which will repeat itself three or four times. It takes 48 hours to see the pinning, which is the very baby head. The entire mushroom

will be ripe for picking in around a week, depending on the weather. It is amazing to see how fast they grow on timelapse videos.
“I believe one day we may use mushrooms to clean the river banks, vineyards, olive groves and agricultural waste.”

he adopted a stallion whom she has named Recon and has six months to tame and train the horse along with taming his companion Mana. “I decided to take up the challenge and try my hand at putting the principals that I use at Tori Lee Equestrian with domesticated horses to the wild horses,” says Tori. “We have six months to help the Recon adjust to a domesticated life the best he can. It will be interesting to see how far we get in that time frame. “I have never done this before so I have no specific expectation and am unsure of the end result. At the end of the six months, we plan to attend the Equifest Stallion challenge in Taupo in
October so he needs to be happy and able to travel.” The horse needs to be comfortable with people and crowds as there are three parts to the challenge. “He needs to be confident with people, and be haltered and led around the arena. Both horses are doing really well. “I am working on the basic handling with Mana for a friend. It has been more than a month since they arrived and I am super happy with how they are both progressing. “Recon is definitely more confident than Mana. He already allows me to halter him in the paddock, rub and touch his body and pick up his feet. I have also added obstacles into the

hard or fast you can see Recon’s slight stubborn streak. “I then use a different approach with him. He is sweet and just needs the moment to think about his answer. They have come a long way with just under five months to go for the training and I am confident with how Recon is tracking. “My husband Pat was laughing at me the first day they arrived as instead of getting one horse I got two and wasn’t sure what I was going to do. There hasn’t been anything that I have come across yet that I don’t know where to go to.

“Everything I do with domestic horses is working with the Kaimanawa, I simply use the same principles in different ways. “The experience is giving me the confidence that I have been training horses right for the last 10 years. “In the next four months I may come across things, but at this stage, it is going as well as I anticipated. confidence. He needs to be safe and confident to be handled.” Mana is also gaining confidence and allowing Tori to touch his head and shoulders and follows her around at liberty. “I have other horses on the property but as Recon and Mana are stallions, only the geldings get to be close to them. I am planning to introduce another horse to their paddock soon. We are keeping the mares away as we don’t want to breed. Both horses will be gelded as that is a requirement when you adopt a stallion/colt from the Kaimanawa muster. “Horse socialising isn’t normally an issue as they live in a family band. It is humans they are not used to. Their personalities are coming out now and Recon lives up to his name. If he isn’t sure about something he hangs back and hides behind Mana watching and observing. “He is very thoughtful with his processes and when he has thought about it he will make a move to come and see the new thing or try what you are asking him to do. “Mana looks like the more confident one as he throws himself in boots and all but doesn’t think first. At times he gets himself in a pickle and gets scared and regrets his decision. He then takes time to regain confidence so I am working on helping him to think about his decisions. “Recon is slightly resistant to pressure with me picking up his feet but he hasn’t been a problem. Neither horse is aggressive but if you are too quick and try to force the subject too

Celebrating 25 years in service The team at HeliNorth has been in the air for 25 years, providing agriculture and horticulture spraying services along with a wide range of other contracts to the Northland community. “We appreciate our commercial, farming and agriculture clients who have supported us over the past 25 years here in Northland,” says manager Reuben Wright. “HeliNorth pilots are qualified and experienced for the job at hand, and they know that even the most sophisticated helicopter is only as good as its pilot. “Our team works from the Auckland harbour bridge to the Cape Reinga, and we have carried out a huge number of missions in that time. We appreciate our loyal customers who have been with us for many of those years, as well as those who have joined us more recently. “We are now starting to get into pasture spraying with the winter weather arriving as weeds such as thistles and carrot weed are starting to shoot away. Getting in early, stops them from spreading and allows for pasture growth. “We are also available for horticulture work such as frost protection and avocado spraying. The wet weather makes it more difficult to get around with ground appliances, so the helicopter is ideal for fertiliser spreading to promote good grass growth.” The team at Helinorth help farmers and lifestyle block owners seeking weed control, fertiliser spreading, grass seeding, forestry operations as well as insect and pest management. “Our pilots have been involved in many situations including firefighting, frost protection, beehive lifting,

and relocating building materials, water tanks and pools into remote or inaccessible locations. “We take pride in getting our work done promptly and professionally for our clients, and our team enjoy all aspects and the variety of jobs that come our way. “We also use drones, which are perfect for both large farmers and lifestyle block owners with moderate to steep blocks that are inaccessible by ground vehicles. If you have ragwort, thistle or gorse — the drone can quietly spray without messing up your paddocks.” “We are Spreadmark certified and spread the cricket bait in the targeted area as well as other forms of pest control using the GPS TracMap in all of our helicopters. Other pests can also be dealt with. “Our TracMap system has a direct online hook up to the Precision Balance and Ravensdown App for proof of placement of fertiliser. How curcumin helps osteoarthritis by John Arts
Without doubt the most important supplement ingredient for osteoarthritis is chondroitin sulphate. The reasons are simple. Chondroitin is a very important constituent of cartilage matrix. This matrix is secreted by specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells live in tiny cavities (lacunae) in cartilage. Their role is to maintain cartilage as it is damaged by wear and tear, injury and chemical processes that damage it. That being said, the health of cartilage is totally dependent on maintaining healthy chondrocytes. Unlike many other cell types, chondrocytes cannot be replaced. There are a number of antioxidants and trace minerals that directly affect the health of chondrocytes. The most important is curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin is perhaps the most studied natural health ingredient. As a potent antioxidant, it helps protect chondrocytes from damage from free radicals. Secondly, curcumin is anti-inflammatory which can help calm the joint by preventing unwanted fluid build-up. A two capsule daily dose of my joint formula
contains 800mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 200mg of Curcumin C3® Complex, plus 5mg of BioPerine®. In most cases, I will start clients on a double dose of two capsules twice daily for around six weeks. This provides double the above dosages; when combined with good quality fish oil these result in rapid effects. Last week I completed a review for a client I have been helping with very sore thumbs from osteoarthritis in his big thumb joint by the wrist. He reported a significant improvement over the past three months. Please contact me if you have joint problems, and I will put together a personalised joint health programme. In the vast majority of cases, we can get real improvements in flexibility and comfort. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Ruawai farmer and long-time farmers rights activist Mark Cameron, who is now in parliament as the ACT Party spokesman on primary industries, is spearheading a petition against Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) which ACT describes as a blatant land grab by the government. “Private property rights are under threat thanks to the government’s directive to councils to identify and manage ‘Significant Natural Areas’,” Mr Cameron says. “Farmers, iwi and many other property owners are concerned that councils can simply rezone and take the land. When he attended a recent event in Northland he said he found a crowd of some 500 people debating the issue. “They were angry and worried about the proposed changes in land management regulations and I have heard the same reaction from the West Coast, Southland and other regions as well.” Mr Cameron says SNAs would prevent landowners from being able to develop their land without any compensation. “It’s a massive government land grab and an assault on private property rights. SNAs undermine conservation efforts by the people who care most about the environment. Farmers have the biggest incentive to care about the environment because they make a living from it. “If you take away proper ty rights, there’s no incentive to be a conservationist. Who would be a

conservationist on their own land if the reward is getting your land confiscated? Countries without property rights are environmental disasters. “Actively punishing people if they look after their wetlands is among the worst policies this government has put in place. The petition being promoted by ACT says landowners, councils and
conservationists already work together to protect indigenous biodiversity and the government should be supporting these efforts. “Sign our petition to stop the Significant Natural Areas land grab,” Mr Cameron says. Go to www.act.org. nz for details. Activist and ACT MP, Mark Cameron

WARKWORTH
Warkworth’s future plans According to the Auckland Plan 2050, Warkworth is a growing rural node and is the largest rural town in the northern part of Auckland serving a large rural catchment. Serving as a gateway to the many villages and beaches along the Matakana and Kowhai Coasts, the township is easily accessible via State Highway 1. Land uses in the area have evolved during the years, from shipbuilding and orchards to dairy and sheep farms. The area has become well known for those in the winemaking, dairying, horticulture, tourism and forestry industries as such businesses have become key contributors to the local economy. According to the Auckland Council website, the plan for Warkworth is expected to have significant residential and employment growth over the next 30 years. Approximately 1,100 hectares is earmarked as future residential and business land. Lifestyle blocks, retirement housing and holiday homes have also become increasingly popular for people moving away from urban Auckland for a quieter lifestyle or to retire. The future development area could accommodate approximately 7,500

additional dwellings or an additional 20,000 people. It is anticipated that the growth will require supporting infrastructure, including transport, water and wastewater upgrades. The development of quality transport links within Warkworth, as well as between Warkworth, Northland and the rest of Auckland will be critical to supporting the town’s future growth. The Puhoi to Warkworth Road of National Significance, Ara Tuhono, is expected to be completed in late 2021, as will the Matakana Link Road.
These projects will take through-traffic and freight away from the town centre and improve travel times to and from Warkworth. The development, which will be staged during the next 20 years, is a reflection of the demand and is a provision of the necessary infrastructure upgrades for town growth. The structure plan for the township will refine the staging and timing of development and will identify the mix and location of housing, employment, retail, commercial and community facilities.

WARKWORTH
A solid icon of history by Liz Clark
Since the early 1840s, Warkworth’s heritage landscape has evolved and changed with the coming and going of industries and fortunes alike. A walk around the township reveals a wealth of iconic structures and heritage buildings. Warkworth had its beginnings focussed around the Mahurangi River and its access to the Hauraki Gulf for the Auckland Coastal trade. Perhaps one of the most iconic features on the river is the concrete dam constructed in 1913 for the Wilson Cement Works. Previously in 1893, a 1.2-metre timber structure had been built in the same location. It was used to supply water to the steamers plying between the settlements on the east coast. With the growth of Wilson’s cement operations in the Warkworth township, the need for an increase of plant and machinery was required. A new dam was planned to support the boilers and replace the existing and inadequate pumping system.
Work on the new dam began in January 1913 with a team of workmen under the supervision of Mr A Wilkins. The structure was designed by engineer Mr Munro Wilson. The structure was a substantial one. Manufactured from concrete, it was reinforced with ‘14lb rails and inch round iron’. Its designer wanted to ensure the dam would stand up to more than nine tonnes of water pressure against it when at full peak. The foundations were embedded into the solid rock base of the Mahurangi riverbed. The structure was completed by March of the same year. Its completion was reported with pride by the resident newspaper of the time. ‘It is 15ft high and 50ft long, tapering inwards with the creek banks, three feet thick at the base and one foot thick at the top. To give it

extra strength to carry the 10 tons of pressure it will bear when the reservoir is full, it has been constructed with a convex arch of two feet to the storage basin and has concrete buttresses to the wall at either end on the other side.’ At its peak, the dam water backed up more than 182 metres providing enough water pressure to convey it through its
extensive network of pipes to the kilns at the cement works. However, with the amalgamation of the Wilson Cement Company with the New Zealand Portland Cement Company in 1918 the dam was out of use with the cement work’s closure in 1929. In 2020, Auckland Council decided to demolish the dam due to environmental concerns. It has yet to occur.

A country tune by Ann van Engelen
As a courier driver, Len Bird would sing along to country music not realising his interest would lead to him becoming the patron of the Wellsford Country Music Club. “Singing country music is very relaxing. I remember singing to my country music records as a teenager and still enjoy the old tunes,” says Len. My wife Lois and I moved to Mangawhai 24 years ago, and I delivered the urban post. I only sang in my truck or at home, and one day, we attended a function with the local harbour restoration group. Someone asked if I would sing. “The Wellsford Country Music Club band was the entertainment that night, and a lady invited us to join them at the club. Lois and I have since been through all the management roles of the club, including treasurer, secretary and dishwasher. I am currently the club patron. “We love the fact that at the club, you can perform on stage, be encouraged and see people enjoying themselves. It

is surprising the lift you get when you see people liking your performance. It gives you a real boost, and it makes you sing a whole lot better. “I still sing old songs people have never heard of. I have been a guest artist for other clubs and events and also go to rest homes and give the residents some good old-fashioned entertainment. “I enjoy a lot of singers. Vince Gill would be one of my favourites and also Dennis Marsh, our local New Zealand singer. Dennis is amazing. His style is inspiring, and I love the effort he has put into country music. He is a very humble man and does things like playing his music in the street or at festivals. “People who come to music events are all after the same thing — to listen or play music. The club is the best outlet I have for my singing. I am nearly 82 years old and people older than me still

sing well. We would love to see other people join us. “Our lead guitarist Barry Bowman is a founding member of our club. He has travelled from Auckland once a month for 51 years, bringing our drummer with him. “They have discovered the traffic congestion is now too difficult, so we are looking for new band members.
“The club is a good way to use your musical talent. You look into the audience enjoying their night, and that makes it all worth the effort. If you need to do a little bit of pretending that you are better than you are, you can. “We meet on the second Sunday of the month at the Wellsford Community Hall, starting at 1pm. Everyone is welcome.”

BUSINESS PROFILE
Where more definitely means more by Andy Bryenton
During the past year, we’ve visited a wide range of Husqvarna dealerships in the north via this regular column, taking us from seaside towns to rural support hubs and into the ‘wilderness’ of the suburban backyard. However, among the many professionals who count outdoor power equipment under their realms of expertise, few offer such a wide range of options as Gatmans Mowers and More. The Silverdale-based company used to be a rural garage, taking care of everything from tractor implements to small engines when this part of the country was rolling farmland, sandwiched between the baches of Takapuna and the holidaymaker’s paradise of Orewa. That was in 1954, under the name NT Gatman, and a solid reputation for quality coupled with a shrewd eye on changing technology saw the city come to the country with the Gatmans name still held high. The company is still in private ownership, and this gives the current team behind the Gatmans banner the flexibility to choose the best in a variety of fields. Husqvarna is front and centre for top-quality chainsaws, riding mowers, brush cutters and outdoor power tools, but the ‘more’ in this company’s name could not be more apt. That’s because Gatmans is proud to offer fireplaces, barbecues, mobility scooters, tractor implements, wood chippers and a host of other advancements for the home and

A FIELD DAYS IN YOUR MAILBOX
Celebrating the spirit of the days When farmers first came to New Zealand, one of the first things they established on the annual calendar was the concept of an A&P show; a place to share their successes and indulge a little friendly rivalry. With some of these days now entrenched in history and going strong for 14 decades or more, it’s fair to say that the idea of a gathering of farmers was a success. However, in 1969 a greater concept emerged; the idea of a national day bringing the town and country together and introducing new innovations in rural technology. That first ‘town and country fair’ was popular indeed, and the big day in Hamilton rolled on with changes and challenges up until 2020, when Covid-19 stopped it, along with most other big outdoor get-togethers, in its tracks. Here’s the thing about Kiwi farmers and farming businesses, though. We’re not easily daunted even by the worst of troubles. When the inability to share

innovations, celebrate new inventions, explore new options, discuss new science and test new machines were taken away from a central arena, we adapted. Last year, as Covid lockdown froze the rest of the country, farms kept working. At the same time, we found other ways of getting the message out to farmers about new, better, more profitable ways to operate, coming out of Covid stronger. We’re on the uphill switchback now. Vaccinations are rolling out, and there will be a big event in Mystery Creek come June, albeit one that accommodates the supply and manufacturing issues the international market is coping with in 2021.

EDUCATION Learning and life away from home by Paul Campbell
Across Northland and in the rest of New Zealand as well, rural isolation can often mean young people make an early departure from the comforts of home to find themselves miles away at boarding school. For some, that may conjure fear of austerity and the cold accommodations of novelists’ descriptions, but in the modern era, the reality of modern-day boarding is very different. “Boarding houses no longer exist in haughty isolation, impervious to change,” recorded the director of boarding at Carruth House at Whangarei Boys’ High School. “Much like the learning and development institutions they work in tandem with, boarding houses must move with the times and adapt in order to stay relevant and in demand.” The days of runny porridge, cold toast and indifferent overcooked vegetables are long past in today’s boarding institutions, with meals usually produced in glistening kitchens by qualified chefs to boot. As typical students should experience a range of activities at boarding school
— perhaps not so many computer games and cell phones as stuff like playing rugby, tennis, learning piano, and also playing cricket and maybe joining a band — after of course lessons of a more academic nature. Boarders are encouraged to take part in the sporting and cultural activities on offer, alongside their studies. A concern for parents is always that children away from the home are safe and cared for and today’s boarding establishments typically provide a safe environment with clear boundaries, curfews and rules. Prefects become ‘big brothers’ and always look out for the interests of the younger and newer boarders, and students mention the lasting friendships they make and the sense of community, feeling like they belong to something bigger than themselves. “Your helping hand”

Wilding pines control measure
by Paul Campbell
Wilding pines are a nation-wide problem and impact significantly on farming as they spread across the landscape and, in doing so, reduce the available grazing land. The Northland Regional Council is working together with landowners, iwi/ hapu, district councils, the Department of Conservation and a range of others to get wilding conifer control projects underway across Northland. Now, an existing fungus may be a weapon to be used in the fight against rogue pines that costs millions of dollars a year in felling the trees and spraying herbicide. Forestry sources report that a fungus that feeds on decaying wood and is common in native forests as a natural part of the ecosystem in decaying fallen trees is actually destructive to pines by killing seedlings and reducing growth. The fungus was used in a BioProtection Research Centre programme, which showed the fungus A novaezealandiae and two closely related species affected wilding pine species and grew on fresh wood. Further
research is underway to establish how wilding pines might be inoculated with destructive results. Last year the government allocated $100 million to the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme for four years. Across Northland, wilding pine removal is underway in creating employment. Control projects have taken place at: • Lake Ngatu, linking into a longrunning community-driven project to restore this culturally significant Far North dune lake • Awanui River, removing unwanted trees from a stretch of erosionprone riverbank and providing a line of defence against flooding • Kai Iwi Lakes, in a project to protect Northland’s rare dune lakes from destructive wilding pines while providing career opportunities for youth • Aupouri Peninsula, extracting nearly

Although the previous set up worked, it was difficult to keep on top of everything. The irrigator can only spread so far, and a contractor was needed to reach other areas of the farm, so Dave and Hayden decided it was time to get a slurry tanker of their own. “Dave gave us a call knowing he wanted a Nevada. A slurry tanker was ideal for his situation. Having various collection points means they can suck up

from anywhere and get effluent spread when and where they need to at any time,” said Nevada’s Michael Prestidge. Dave and Hayden love the versatility of having a slurry tanker as it enables them to focus on one area and get it done all at once. “We’ve found it awesome — just the versatility. “During the year, we can pick different paddocks, go in and pump it out all over the crop paddocks and all that. irrigator anywhere near as much as we used to. We’re really happy,” said Dave. One of his biggest concerns about getting a slurry tanker was the added labour time to do the spreading. Now they have had it for a while; he’s found that’s not the case. “You always worry it will make things a bit slower, but because it pumps so quickly, and the tractor just pulls it along, it’s a piece of cake. “We’re really happy with it. It was a good purchase.”

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD
A five-decade farming legacy by Andy Bryenton
Father and son team Ray and Alan McEvoy have attained a milestone this year that is rare in any kind of business, let alone farming. 2021 will see their 50th annual bull sale unfold on their rolling clifftop property in the Kaipara, all under the watchful eye of the original founder. Ray bought this slice of coastal land in the early 1960s with the intent to run sheep, but soon a gradual shift toward cattle began, at first rearing Friesian bull calves for a little extra profit. However, the McEvoy’s farms would become synonymous with Moana Polled Herefords during the years, imposing red-and-white beasts with what Alan calls a quiet temperament. “We started with just two cattle,” says Alan. “After which, we brought in sires from all over the country. Our first sale was for a three-year-old bull, who went for $1,600; that was a good price back then.” From early days trading at Dargaville’s cattle yards to the unbroken chain of 50 bull sales, which culminates in the event this July 12, Moana bulls have travelled far and wide to places as far afield as Mahia, Hunterville and the South Island. Along the way, Ray and Alan were the first local farmers to make five figures on a two-year-old bull. They say that there’s a friendly rivalry between studs and that they are proud to stay at the forefront of their profession. That is despite changing land use which has seen demand plateau in recent years. “As the pine forests went in, cow country got eaten up; that led to a diminishing demand for good quality

bulls,” opines Ray. Nevertheless, those who know excellent livestock still arrive each year to see and buy, the fruits of the McEvoy’s labour. This month will be no exception, and both Ray and Alan express the hope that the 50-year mark might attract some old faces and old friends back around the table. “It would be nice to see some of the old buyers from the past come and have a whiskey with us,” says Alan. “After the sale, of course. We always put on a big lunch afterwards; it’s a tradition here.” Despite the winter weather, a break in the clouds provides a panoramic view of the rolling hillsides as we travel by ute and farm bike to photograph the real stars of the sale; the bulls. While
this land is picturesque, Ray and Alan acknowledge the challenges of farming here; hot, dry summers often prevail, but 50 years of farming knowledge serve their purpose. A trio of big, heavy, healthy and brighteyed bulls wait for the camera as they wait for sale day. Seeing these cattle beasts framed against the hills and sea, 50 years of dedication and breeding comes into perspective.

Border class exceptions An additional 200 dairy workers and 50 veterinarians can enter New Zealand, with the government approving border class exceptions for the industry. “It is clear from conversations with the dairy and veterinarian sectors that they are facing workforce pressures. These border exceptions will go a long way towards relieving those pressures,” said the Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor. “The exceptions will allow up to 150 dairy farm workers in management roles on farms, up to 50 workers in dairy assistant roles, and up to 50 general practice vets to enter New Zealand, along with their partners and dependent children. “What we have also made clear to sector leaders is that we need to ensure there is a strong incentive for New Zealanders to take up entry-level roles and develop careers in dairying. “The government and food and fibres sector have been working hard to mitigate worker shortages by training and upskilling New Zealanders, but we know that takes time. “ This announcement recognises the immediate need for additional expertise to come through our borders. “Dairy managers and vets have specialist
skills developed over many years, which we can’t replicate overnight. With the new dairy season kicking off, migrant dairy farm workers will supplement the domestic workforce and provide critical support. “Despite the previous border class exception for vets, our domestic vet skill shortage remains acute, including in hard to recruit roles in isolated rural practices. “This new class exception will allow veterinarians to enter New Zealand if they have between three to five years’ experience and meet the remuneration threshold of $85,000 a year.” Minister O’Connor said dairy farm workers and vets played a key role in animal welfare, food safety, and safeguarding New Zealand’s international reputation as a producer of safe and sustainable food. “In making this decision, we have balanced the need to keep New Zealanders safe and ensure appropriate MIQ capacity, with seasonal and strategic skills shortages and seasonal variations for overseas New

man. During independent testing in Austria, the test company also tried the machine with hydrogen as fuel, not hydrogen stored in a fuel cell, but the cheaper, bottled version. It was a complete success. “It was always our dream at Aquarius Engines to breathe oxygen into hydrogen technology as the fuel of the future. From initial tests, it appears that our hydrogen engine, that doesn’t require costly hydrogen fuel-cells, could be the affordable, green and sustainable answer to the challenges faced by global transport and remote energy production. As the world moves away from fossil fuel, our new hydrogen

engine could spark the dawning of the age of Aquarius,” says Gal Fridman, chairman of Aquarius Engines. Doing the maths, a single 15 kilogram Aquarius engine with only 20 moving parts can easily produce 32 kilowatts of electric power. It also delivers 1,200 kilometres for every 50 litres of fuel. The fact that the fuel in question can be petrol, CNG, LPG or hydrogen makes all the difference. Those who say that switching to an all-electric fleet would necessitate the construction of vast new power stations and kilometres of pylons and cables, take note. Hydrogen is back in the race.

At the same time that the Volt was creating interest for a new crop of electric vehicles, and the Prius was fresh on the hybrid scene, Honda developed a working model of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle called the Insight. A few of these revolutionary cars hit the road, but the places to refuel its expensive and bulky cells were far between, and as the years went by, hydrogen became a distant second-runner behind electricity. Now there’s new life for the hydrogen concept, as a cutting-edge company based in Israel reveals a new kind of hydrogen engine. Strangely enough, it all came out of trying to get more bang for each drop of petrol. The Aquarius engine runs a single piston with two engine heads. That is because the piston goes backwards as well as forwards, a kind of inside-out version of the boxer configuration seen in a Porsche or Subaru. Instead of two pistons working parallel on a single crank, one piston moves on the same vertical plane but on a single shaft. That shaft is hollow and also contains the inlets for the fuel and air mixture. This compact size has allowed Aquarius to build a 16-kilowatt generator that weighs less than a full-grown

The luxury of choice
by Andy Bryenton
There was a time when you could have any European car you liked as long as it was a BMW or a Mercedes. Those were the days when the 190E Cosworth and the M3 E30 ruled. Alfas were known to blow up, Volkswagens were still Beetles, Volvos looked like a very safe loaf of bread, and anything French seemed to have been manufactured by style-conscious aliens who put the buttons in all the wrong places. Even when Pininfarina made the pretty little Peugeot 306 drop-top, the horn button was on the end of the indicator stalk and activated a siren under the passenger seat. Jags were for Arthur Daley and the Kray twins. Audi made psychopathic rally-eating monsters and not much else. Lancias were beautiful and rusted like a cat food tin, and Italian supercars were temperamental glass cannons of things. Fast forward to the present day, and nearly every name on this list produces an excellent modern SUV. Even Lamborghini sawed off the mad bits and made the Urus. However, there’s still a problem of choice if you want a fun, stylish looking station wagon. There are many of us who eschew a frontwheel-drive ‘crossover’ as a travesty, a powdered-egg omelette when what you want is the full Benedict. A true ‘estate car’ or a shooting brake looks better, handles better and guzzles less gas. So what does one do if one wants a standout, cool, 300 horsepower wagon that comes with good engineering underneath and a sharp image up top? It turns out you go to Spain. Seat, the Volkswagen-owned subsidiary, which
Cupra represents a new design look for parent company Seat, itself a Spanish branch of the mighty VW-Audi family
shares a parts bin and lots of tech with Audi and Lamborghini, has launched a performance skunkworks standalone brand, like M Division or AMG. It’s called Cupra, and among its offerings is the very pretty, nicely proportioned Leon VZ Sportstourer. With some German hammers and calliper work under the hood churning out 310 horses, and 400 newton metres of torque from a two-litre turbopetrol mill, it’s quick on paper. It’s also eye-candy delicious in photographs, with
SUZUKI
its copper-finished 19 inch mags and its stealth-bomber crisp, origami lines. Certainly, you could get a more expensive Mercedes, which will be heavier and more powerful, or a big BMW for a few extra dollars, and have to deal with the new design language

that’s making us forget Chris Bangle. A similarly priced Skoda is now a plainclothes police car, mind you. So it may pay to check out this fourwheel-drive five-door from the land of Gaudi and Dali. It’s here this month.
