Inflation hikes hurting New Zealanders

It essentially represents a total household income of around $110,000, made up of middle-income earners with a family of two-and-a-bit children on average. At a time when we’re seeing record high-rents, escalating petrol prices and eye-watering costs at the supermarket, Kiwis are now being told to brace themselves for more pain to come. With the average household expected to be $150 a week worse off by the end of the year. Inflation is also pushing everyone into higher tax brackets. Despite this, at the time of writing, we’re expecting a big Beehive splash-out with a record new spend of $6 billion in this year’s budget. Unfortunately, there isn’t any relief for the squeezed middle in prospect. Recent increases to the minimum wage and benefit payments don’t generally apply to this group. Hence, changes like these tend not to make life much better for them. The uber-wealthy are still smoothsailing, typically being able to structure

their affairs in the most tax-efficient way. They possibly won’t even have noticed that we have a cost of living crisis. For those of you in the squeezed middle, it’s all too real. The message from Wellington seems to be that you’ll have to struggle on. On my side of the aisle, we’re saying that’s not good enough. National would adjust the tax brackets for inflation so that Kiwis can keep more of what they earn and receive some desperately needed relief in their pockets. Our initial tax response would put $1,600 back into the average household budget each year, and superannuitants would benefit too, with a retired couple receiving around an additional $520. In case you’re wondering, we wouldn’t cut essential services like health, education or the police to deliver these tax cuts, but rather ensure the funding we do invest delivers real outcomes for New Zealanders, including the long-suffering and oft-forgotten squeezed middle.

Bringing rural communities together

June 2022

A series of collaboration dinners and lunches are underway to support farmers from north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Cape Reinga. Federated Farmers Auckland and Northland have teamed up with the Northland Rural Support Trust, NZ Police, Civil Defence and a dozen more groups to connect rural Northlanders. “The gatherings are really important for farmer wellbeing and reassure farmers that they have access to numerous support agencies to help them through challenging times 24/7,” says Northland Federated Farmers president Colin Hannah. “It is really pleasing to see how many organisations have gathered around our Northland Rural Support Trust to provide time, money and provisions to have meals with our rural communities. “It is a good chance to quiz around everyday on-farm issues and to reinforce the backbone of the five ways to wellbeing underpinning the dinner. It assists the community in connecting again and gives people a break from preparing meals. “Ultimately, the community is given the impetus to get together and be strong again. We need to remember that those that are feeling in despair or anxious are not going to come to reconnect as they did in years gone by if we don’t make an effort to catch up. “If your neighbour or friend hasn’t turned up, call on them and have a cup of tea, a chat and start the process of rebuilding and uplifting each other. I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to get along to a dinner or lunch. “In the old days, the rural community was the centre of the universe. Many

Farmers are encouraged to join others for the upcoming community lunches and dinners

community halls around the country were built by voluntary labour by members of the community. Integrity was everything in these communities. You could share with your mates and know they had your back.” Mr Hannah is concerned that a lack of human interaction and sharing experiences, combined with increasing pressures on farmers, has resulted in a rise in doubt and anxiety. “Remember there are people and organisations to turn to, and the Northland Rural Support Trust and Federated Farmers are just a couple that are here to listen and help. These collaboration gatherings can be the start of bringing our rural communities back together.” Upcoming meals include the Broadwood Sale Pavilion, Thursday, June 16, from noon–1.30pm, Tomarata/East Kaipara, Thursday, June 30, from noon– 1.30pm, and Waimamaku, Thursday, July 7, from noon–1.30pm.

fter growing up in the country, Gus and Jen wanted to return to a rural lifestyle after years of city living. “Gus came from a sheep and beef farm in Gisborne and had been shearing in England,” says Jen. “We then lived in Auckland for nine years, where he worked in international trade with organic produce while I worked in animal nutrition. “As environmentally aware foodies who love to cook, we had the idea of establishing a small-scale market garden. We decided to leave our jobs to pursue a different pace of life and began looking for a block of rural land close to the beach. “Growing vegetables has always been a passion for Gus, who has many happy childhood memories of foraging in his grandparents’ vegetable garden in Wairoa. Our dream of a sustainable coastal lifestyle finally came true when

Gus and Jen Ross have nearly completed their project of creating a small-scale market garden

we moved on to our 4.5ha lifestyle block in Waipū, January 2020.”

Gus and Jen moved to Waipū just before the first Covid lockdown.

Gus and Jen conscientiously grow produce and flowers, with a focus on soil health and sustainable practices at Left Fields gardens

“We found we were in heaven starting our business in an amazing community, and we fell on our feet — it is fantastic. “We have nearly completed our gardens in the defined market garden area, which will give us half an acre of total production. It is a no-dig project, which means it is all done by hand on top of the soil with no machinery used. “Our system is scaled for the two of us to work and has been a combination of growing and expanding each section as we go. “The winters have been challenging with extreme rain events. We had to work out how to grow during the winter and cold seasons, so we recently purchased some polyhouses and tunnels to cover two vegetable beds.

“It meant we altered things, but the crops under the tunnels would be protected from high rain and wind events. We have enough work now to continue growing flowers and vegetables all year. “Supplying locally rather than expanding to other regions is important to us. We want to help local families because serving our community is where we get our sense of achievement. “We follow a highly successful smallscale market gardeners’ model and would like to see more small-scale produce farmers established in other communities. “People want relationships and know who grows their food, how and where, rather than going to the supermarket. We

are a one-stop-shop, as we grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables, which are better than just salad greens. “We practise organic growing principles because it is important to us to produce food that is completely spray and chemical-free. We get a lot of comments that our vegetables taste like they should, rather than the often bland supermarket taste. People love our rainbow carrots. They are sweet and taste very strongly of carrots, and children really enjoy them. “Being spray-free is our personal choice, but it was also a customerdriven requirement because so many people won’t go near sprayed products. Customers are more educated now and are wary of what is being put on food crops. “One of our main objectives is to maintain a very healthy and fertile soil life because we believe if you can foster that by looking after the soil with worms, fungi and microbiology, you grow healthier plants that are resilient to damage. “The no-dig concept preserves soil life and structure, giving us better plants and ultimately a better product. People often spray because of time constraints, but don’t realise it is not environmentally or human friendly — sprays are known to destroy your soil and gut health.” Jen and Gus also offer a pick your own flowers service. “I love cut flowers, and it made sense to incorporate flowers into the business because they add beauty and bring insects in for pollinating the vegetable plants.

June 2022

“From October to May, people come by appointment and have the whole garden to themselves. The flowers are seasonal and grown outdoors, and it follows the pick your own strawberries model. You enjoy the process and the end product. “We also run Airbnb accommodation, and people can pre-order their vegetables to be ready waiting for them, or they can pick their own. They love picking their own flowers and having a sundown picnic on the property. “We don’t do shearing anymore, but we do have Texel sheep and a house cow. We grow our own beef and are as selfsustainable as we can be.”

Latest news & updates from around our Network

Help us keep the power on for you & your neighbours this winter A reminder as we head into winter that the biggest cause of unplanned power outages are trees in lines. During winter storms and high winds falling trees and branches can break lines causing power cuts, potential fire risk, electrocution and even death. Help us to keep the power on for you and your neighbourhood – check your property for trees in or near lines. If you have network lines going over your property you are responsible for keeping trees and vegetation away from the lines. Give us a call if you have any concerns, we will send an arborist to check and work with you to ensure your trees are safely trimmed. If there are trees in or near the network lines on your property please call us on 0800 10 40 40.

It is very important that you do not attempt to trim trees near network lines yourself, it is very dangerous and under the law only an approved contractor can do it – never go within 4 meters of a power line. To avoid power cuts at your place it is also important to check for trees or vegetation near your service line (the power line between the property boundary and your house, shed or business). Call us on 0800 10 40 40 to arrange a safety disconnection before any work to trim trees goes ahead. Check our website: northpower.com for a list of approved contractors to trim trees near your service lines.

Winter energy saving tips HEATING: Choose a heater that suits the room and your needs.

HOT WATER: Makes up around 30% of an average power bill

Portable electric heaters are 100% efficient, but heat pumps can be more than 300% efficient. Consider heating only the room you are in rather than the whole house.

Check your hot water temperature and turn down to 55 C at the tap (an economy temperature). Hot water for washing dishes is a good guide - if you add cold water to do the dishes you might want to turn the thermostat down.

Choose a heater with a thermostat which cycles on and off, and a timer. This helps maintain an even, constant temperature.

Showers use less water than a bath, especially when using an energy efficient showerhead.

HEATED TOWEL RAILS: Keeping a standard 80 watt heated towel rail on all the time costs 48 cents per day. That might not sound like much, but it does add up.

COLD WASH CLOTHES: Unless you have especially dirty clothes, use the cold wash cycle for the laundry. A hot water wash can use 10 times more electricity than a cold wash.

To save energy you could consider turning your heated towel rail off at the wall when you don’t need your towels warm, or you could install a timer to come on automatically at certain times.

According to the EECA, four loads of laundry washed in a cold cycle a week will save you about $60$80 a year.

ASK FOR FIBRE This large tree came down on network lines last winter, causing a six hour power outage for people in the area. Damage to neighbouring houses was also caused as the lines were pulled away from house entry points.

and source the correct materials they may need. “For possums, a popular and effective trap is the SA2 trap, which was developed and made in Northland by Steve Allan. “It is a very robust and durable trap that works well for eliminating possums and feral cats. A lot of farmers use this trap

and are happy with the results, and we can supply them through a grant or offer a service to buy pest control products.” One family Rolf has been helping is the Macmillan family in Pipiwai. “The Macmillans set up their possum control system on March 25 and have collected more than 850 possum kills — 380 have been with the traps and the balance with bait stations. “That is a phenomenal amount of possums to have controlled. It is not only biodiversity they are protecting. Possums eat a significant amount of grass, trees, native birds and their eggs. “The Macmillan family has native trees and grows various heritage fruit trees, and eliminating the pests will help protect the orchards. Doug, Steve, Alex and Michael planting a kauri tree on the land as part of their native restoration programme

“There are many farms in Northland that have thriving biodiversity values such as kiwi, bittern and brown teal. Farmers like the Macmillans are doing incredibly well.” Michael Macmillan says being biosecurity aware is important for the protection of farmland and native species, and the future generations. “Growing up on the farm has been a special experience in so many ways,” says Michael. “Our parents always talked about the importance of conservation and were happy to teach us about the flora and fauna at every opportunity. Actually, they didn’t just talk about it. They fenced off and retained pockets of indigenous plantations and replanted wetlands across various parts of the farm. “They did this through the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and over the past few years across the road. These areas have been

significantly transformed over the last 50 years. “A few years ago, we located an 1879 survey map at Archives NZ that shows vast areas of kauri forest sweeping from the Pipiwai settlement across to the Pipiwai Stream by the present farm entrance. “It incorporated around 70 acres of our block. We then started discussing options of reforesting pockets in native trees such as kauri, matai, kowhai and swamp mairie, so generations to come will experience the whenua as it used to be 140 years ago. “Before we could commence this journey, it was essential to securely fence the boundary to exclude wild animals such as cattle and pigs coming through and damaging the plants, followed by a robust pest control programme, which has removed around 850 possums since March this year.

Enjoy peace of mind with a transportable EcoPod dwelling

Helping to protect native trees, heritage fruit and pasture, the Macmillan family has culled more than 850 possums on the farm with traps and bait stations

“It would be special to see kiwi coming back and hear them calling at night as our parents used to in the 1960s. That would be a truly great achievement.” Michael’s brother Steve lives on the property and is also passionate about looking after the land.

June 2022

“Throughout my entire life, I have been encouraged by my parents and elders around the district to make the most of what nature offers, and utilise, nurture and give back to the environment. “That is because the land is our income and our future, so it is in our interests to look after the environment. Everything good we do for the environment adds up, and I can point to many pockets on the farm where natives have been planted over the years. We also have areas of gullies and waterways fenced off to let native flora and fauna flourish. “In the past 10 years alone, my daughter Madison and I have rehomed dozens of kauri snails from the mānuka block out the back of the farm to numerous gullies. It is really satisfying going back to those areas and finding them thriving. “The reason we spread them around is because we often find them washed on to farm tracks and into waterways on the edge of those tracks after heavy rain.” For more information on pest control — go to nrc.govt.nz. CRUISING ON

Luke and Ella Christieson are cruising around New Zealand on their converted fishing boat Argo with their children Kylie, Isaac and Lucie, and cat Radar.

ARGO BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

“I

grew up on my parents’ boat sailing around the world for eight years, and I guess I am following in their footsteps,” says Luke. “Ella homeschools the children, and I am an engineer by trade, and was working in Nelson. We built a new house and had a mortgage and thought if that was it in life, we weren’t happy. We decided to sell the house and buy an old house and Argo the old fishing boat and travel around the country. “We gutted Argo and rebuilt living spaces and accommodation downstairs, while planning our travels. The boat is relatively cheap to get around on. You just need to be able to fix and maintain things yourself.

“We left Nelson in September 2019, and travelled up the east coast of the North Island as far as Whangaroa Harbour on our first trip, which took us 14 months. Depending on how much fun we are having in each area depends on how long we stay. “We are now on our second trip and are heading to Cape Reinga area and then down the east coast. We stock up with groceries for three months at a time when we are onshore and fish, dive and hunt for other food. “We recently went into the Kaipara Harbour and up to Tinopai, Pahi, Port Albert and Dargaville. We have met some lovely people, and while in Dargaville,

The family enjoy exploring the different areas of the country and visiting the various beaches and towns along the way

across the bar. It was good for us to see the bar from high up on the dunes from a different angle than what we normally see from the ocean. “Some of my favourite places have been Fiordland and Stewart Island, the Marlborough Sounds and Great Barrier. The locals on the Barrier are very cool, and there is a place called Smokehouse Bay for boaties to have outside baths, and it is set up well with pizza ovens and things. While there, the children were able to go to school, which they really enjoyed. “We love the freedom we have with no work schedule or stress and not too many rules while we see the country from

a different angle. We highly recommend that if people can do it that they take time out and enjoy the experience of getting out of the system. “It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and it did take a bit of adjustment, but it is well worth it. With modern technology, it is easier to get around the country, and it is a great way to have family time. “We see places that we normally wouldn’t be able to afford with the cost of petrol or flying anywhere. When we left Nelson, we stocked the boat with non-perishables for three months, and we buy fruit and vegetable at shops we find onshore.

Nine-year-old Isaac enjoys fishing, hunting and helping his dad do maintenance on the boat

“When I travelled the world as a child with my mum, dad and brother, it was an eye-opening experience. By the time I was 13 years old, I had learned a lot of practical skills, and we are now passing those on to our children. “We hope to get to Australia and the Pacific Islands when things open up a bit more. It is exciting when we are out on the ocean and see dolphins, whale and orcas along with the different fish and bird life.” The children say they enjoy the lifestyle and are learning lots of different things. “As a family, we go to so many beaches looking for treasure,” says Isaac.

“I am nine years old now, and my favourite thing is fishing and hunting with dad, and I can drive the boat now. I know how to tie it off, read the charts and I have helped fix a lot of engine issues. “We have learned about the birds and their names, and we enjoy meeting the different people when we go onshore. Seeing the kauri tree, Tāne Mahuta was much bigger than we thought. “We love living on the boat, swimming and getting quality time together. Kylie and I cook dinner once a week and that is a lot of fun. It is amazing how many people tell us they want to do the same thing.”

It will see him step up from sales and marketing manager into the management of the wider businesses, including Just Avocados. Jacob has been an integral part of the growth of Darling Group, and we are excited to see him with a title that reflects the work he does for the business.

The next big change is the rebuild of our Just Avocados packing facility on Woodland Road, which includes making room for a new packing line. packing line, a wash bath with presoaking, ensuring the avocados we are packing are free of any debris. All the technology featured should allow us a 65% increase in efficiency and drastically cut down the doublehandling of all fruit. This project is set out in stages. Stage two involves a fair bit of groundwork

to level out the surrounding area of the packhouse and make way for new loading bays, including the ability to load directly into export containers. Andrew Darling is pleased to share that the business can now offer this service to growers. He is excited by the efficiency and improved quality standards it will bring to our customers.

A ride on the wild side When you sign up for a week-long ride around the southernmost point of the North Island, you are treated to wild scenery, wild food and wild people pulled together in an elegant and comfortable package that delivers more than most people would ever expect.

Experience New Zealand’s greatest new ride with Green Jersey Explorer Tours

New Zealand’s greatest new ride is the Remutaka, Palliser and Tora, starting and finishing at Martinborough Wine Village. You will experience fine dining and fine accommodation, while meeting a collection of characters as you pass through private farmland made accessible exclusively to Green Jersey Explorer Tours. On your first evening, you are welcomed to Wairarapa with po ˉwhiri at a local marae. Mana whenua acknowledge your presence and provide their blessing as we pass through their rohe. You will also be told the history of this place through the lens of iwi Ma ˉori. Your journey across the Remutaka Rail Trail from Upper Hutt finishes with dinner at the Whiteswan Country Hotel in Greytown. During this day of riding, you will cross two dramatic suspension bridges. One, the recently completed Tauherenikau Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in New Zealand — it is firmly tied to the adjacent rail bridge. Cycling across Palliser Ridge is a rare pleasure, meeting the farmers and seeing their paddock to plate products, talking about a future-focussed farming philosophy. It is not unusual for discussion to turn to topics like farm succession and capital structures when a group of like-minded individuals find themselves together.

Quickly, a group’s attention turns to crayfish, pa ˉua, Pilsner and Pinot after a day riding the Palliser Bay Coast and visiting the Putangirua Pinnacles. John Priest (JP) is ready to entertain at the Waimeha Camping and cabins. Fun and games are assured. The ride from Ngawi to Tora is another rare treat and is fully guided. You find yourself in a remote, wild coastal area, with the odd fence to clamber over, stream to cross, and a huge amount of history to discover and learn about. Two nights are spent at the Tora Cookhouse, one of the original Tora Coastal Walk accommodations. Riders choose whether to relax during a day in Tora, go for a ride, walk or enjoy an Italian Cooking class and night sky experience. Tora and Jenny Boyne will show up and say g’day. They are two local legends and love to chat about how life on the edge (of New Zealand) is. A final backroad ride into Martinborough completes the five night, six day experience of a lifetime. This adventure is suitable for most riders who are experienced off road riders on moderate terrain. Visit greenjersey.co.nz/remutakapalliser-tora-6-day. Tours from $1,950pp (group price). One of the most rewarding things I do is to hear stories from clients. I have an older client who was healthy but had low energy and felt flat despite no medical reasons. I had started her on a programme that involved three supplements: A winter Vitamin D booster to lift her immune responses, some Omega 3 fish oil to reduce inflammation and most importantly my multi-antioxidant, multimineral, multivitamin supplement. She reported her energy levels were steadily rising and felt so much better in herself. My standard advice is that if you feel unwell you should get a medical checkup. If there is no particular medical reason for feeling low in energy we then turn our attention to micro-nutrients; the minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that are responsible for maintaining the health of our cells. As I often repeat, ‘a healthy cell is a healthy body’. When we improve the health of cells, we improve the health of the tissue comprising those cells. In the case of my client, I suspect that we helped the processes that

John Anderson Brown founded the township in 1856. Warkworth is now a relaxed village situated at the head of the Mahurangi River, and is the perfect location to begin your Matakana Coast adventure with a tour of the town’s historic buildings. The town bridge sits above a historic weir that provided freshwater for the town’s original industries, including a jam factory, timber mill and the Wilson Cement Works. The weir famously served as a bathing pond for elephants when the circus came to town in the 1930s. The atmospheric ruins of the Wilson Cement Works are not far from town, and is a great spot for an early morning walk, run or cycle. When the weather is fine, it is a good place to stop for a picnic, paddleboard or swim if you are confident. Maps of the local heritage trail are available from the Information Centre, 1 Baxter Street. Alternatively, visitors can follow the Mahurangi River walkway and experience the once busy port for sailboats, passenger steamers and scows transporting goods to and from Auckland. WARKWORTH

A solid legacy by Liz Clark

When Glasgow-born Nathaniel Wilson picked up a copy of Henry Reid’s book, Science and Art of the Manufacture of Portland Cement, in 1883 — it sparked an idea. Forming a partnership with his brothers, John and James, J Wilson and Company launched in 1884. Initially beginning with the manufacture of hydraulic lime, by 1885, the company was manufacturing cement. It was the southern hemisphere’s first commercially manufactured Portland cement enterprise. At the cement works, purposebuilt equipment for Portland cement manufacture included two large vertical kilns and a pug mill. With the expansion of government public works around New Zealand during the early 1890s, Wilsons made further extensions to the manufacturing site to increase its production capacity. An economic news correspondent at the time noted: ‘English cement is in small stock, but shipments are nearly due. The great strength of test of the Warkworth (New Zealand) article must soon largely interfere with the use of

imported; indeed, it is doing this already to no inconsiderable extent now that the latter pays such high freight rates.’ In 1898, Nathaniel’s son William, an engineer, travelled to the USA and visited several cement manufacturers. It resulted in further additions during 1903–04 to the manufacturing plant of rotary kilns and ball and tube grinding mills that increased production capacity further. At the same time, the business became a public limited liability company, manufacturing some 20,000 tonnes annually and by 1910 employed 180 workers. Industrial troubles during 1913 saw the Watersiders Union refusing to handle Wilson’s cement shipments. It was alleged unionised cement workers were being victimised by their employer at the Warkworth site. The dispute was later settled with a wage rise of sixpence a day through the efforts of the United Federation of Labour president WT Young.

The Wilson cement works in Warkworth during its heyday

By 1918 the company was voluntarily wound up and amalgamated with the New Zealand Portland Cement Company. The company’s works were at Limestone Island, where the main cement plant was sited, while the Warkworth site focussed on hydrated lime. By 1926 the closure of

Green is the gold standard in schools

The Enviroschools programme is changing the way sustainable ecology, especially in rural areas, is taught to tamariki and rangatahi.

Ruawai Kindergarten students get ready to plant a food forest; the Green-Gold Enviroschools accreditation of this learning centre informs their education pathways

Enviroschools began as a small local Hamilton project in 1993. It has grown to encompass many schools around the country and in the north. The initial idea came from the 1992 Rio De Janeiro ecological summit meeting, which coined the phrase ‘think globally and act locally’. Three Hamilton primary schools trialled several projects to explore how to integrate environmental education into school life. From the Waikato, the story comes to Ruawai, a small town situated on the fertile plains south of Dargaville. All of the small community’s education providers are part of the Enviroschools programme from the kindergarten, a member of the top-tier Enviroschools Green-Gold club, to the high school, Ruawai College, which is utilising environmental learning in its new, non-NZCE based modular curriculum. “I am delighted to see how much this kindergarten has grown. When you plant a seed, make sure you nurture it and help it grow,” said Ruawai Kindergarten spokesperson Whaea Lynet te Chapman recently. She was speaking on the occasion of planting a new food forest garden at the

early childhood centre. It is intended to teach the very young people of Ruawai about food resilience and plant biology and provide kai for them to eat. At the same time, the kindergarten will assist with the planting of 4,000 native trees; a project picked up by all three local schools. “I jumped at the opportunity,” says Ruawai Primary School principal Wayne Steele. “Then, I thought about how to tackle this monumental task. The Matariki Tu Rākau Trust has generously provided the trees, and now we will plant them in collaboration with our neighbours.” “When I got the call, I said we would be there,” says Ruawai College assistant principal Jay Warren.” “Our year seven and eight students are working on kaitiakitanga projects, while year nine and 10 are studying social action. We can use this experience, due to the flexibility of our new curriculum, to aid in learning while helping nature and the community”. This single event will establish a new community ngahere, or native forest park, for generations to come and involves nearly every student in the town, from preschoolers to teens. It’s a perfect example of the Enviroschools ethos at work.

We all know about the social and personal upheaval of a big move. It can be exacerbated when it’s not just your household that is shifting but your livelihood and business as well. Farms are often situated far from social hubs, so it can seem difficult to get engaged with a new community quickly. However, there are some easy ways to get well known to your neighbours in the north: 1 Join a club. It could be a chance to get amongst some sporting action, learn something new, get creative or participate in good works in the community. The definition of a club can be very broad. Meeting fencing needs Jared Rountree established Contour Fencing 2018 Ltd to provide quality fencing to farmers, lifestyle block, urban and commercial property owners. “I was brought up on a farm and was introduced to doing fence repairs as part of the lifestyle growing up,” says Jared. “When I was 20, I left my dad’s farm and worked on a neighbouring property for four years. It was an intensive sheep and beef block, and I worked with the full-time fencer. “He ended up starting his own business, and I took over his role on the farm and brought my own tractor and post driver when I was 26. I did that until I was 30 with trips to Australia shearing, and I also managed a beef farm for five years until I decided to start Contour Fencing. “I have a team of nine people, and I am based in the Whangarei area and service the Kaipara and Whangarei districts and other parts of Northland on request. “We cover all aspects of fencing, the majority being farming, rural and a lot of lifestyle posts and rails, subdivisions and residential as well as commercial and security fencing. “We use modern and versatile equipment that allows us to get the job done with efficiency minimising downtime on every project. “For lifestyle block holders, I recommend calling us to design and build fencing to suit their needs, particularly when they first buy a property.

“Farmers generally call us to replace relevant fencing on an annual basis. It is particularly important to ensure your boundary fences are in a good state and keep stock on the property securely. “Having fences in good shape means good pasture control and better stock growth management. We can assess fencing on-site and give advice on whether a fence can be repaired

or needs replacing. That is important because if stock gets out on to the road, any accident is the responsibility of the stock owner. “Good fencing is a long-term asset to protecting a property. Hiring a

TRADITIONAL NEWSPAPERS Retain a trust rating of Agriline’s new premises in Dargaville

“Raising the Agriline flag over these crossroads in the heart of the rural west Kaipara region is an opportunity too good to miss,” says Agriline managing director Mike Hamlin. Mike grew up in Dargaville and has spent the best part of the last 40 years in the agricultural machinery industry and wants to provide quality farm machinery, parts and accessories to the farmers and contractors in the region. “What we have aimed for, and achieved, is a business focus on four

things; quality, durability, simplicity and reliability,” says Mike, as renovations and installations go on all around him at the busy Dargaville site. “Farmers want to cut down on their overheads and downtime, and we have sourced machinery which can deliver.” In addition to the mulchers, sprayers, and cultivation machinery already available through Agriline, the new retail premises will stock oil, tools, general parts and accessories, and a broader range of machinery and attachments.

The new premises are open now, and stock is arriving during the next few weeks, so Agriline welcomes you to call in and see us. If you are looking for any agricultural machinery or parts, make Agriline your first port of call.

Innovative stock trough Justin Robb is the driving force of Precast Products Limited, with more than 30 years of experience in the concrete and construction industry, both in New Zealand and overseas. Justin had a desire to create concrete products that were innovative, functional and durable. “After returning to the Bay of Islands, where I grew up, I decided I wanted to still work in the concrete industry,” says Justin. “In 2017, Precast Products Limited was born. Along with my partner Sandra, we have been designing and creating concrete products to enhance New Zealanders’ lifestyles.” Precast Products’ range of concrete products include smokehouses, dog food and water bowl and pavers and its NZ patented livestock troughs (NZ Patent 755783) “Our livestock troughs are the core product in our rural product range, and there is not another trough doing what ours does. “Our trough’s point of difference varies from other models as it has a base mounted ballcock protector. It allows the ballcock float to rise to the centre of the trough, keeping it away from the animals’ faces.” The livestock troughs are available in two sizes, 1,000 litres and 500 litres. “The system gives flexibility, and the protector is removable, so you can access the ballcock. “Our point of difference is once you have access to the ballcock, you can turn the ballcock arm on its side and use the arm as your on and off tap. With the ability to do this, you can clean your trough, fill your spray tank and even give the tractor a hose down on-site.

Green results tailor made

Spreading Northland is a business built from the pasture level up; designed by owner and operator Jason Williamson and his team to make greener pastures easier to achieve. “Having grown up on a farm, we not only talk the talk, but more importantly, we have a grassroots understanding of the needs of farmers and how today’s farms operate,” says Jason. “We know what farmers need, so we offer bulk cartage, earthworks and spreading services throughout Northland, making it easier for our customers to get on with the business of farming.” Williamson Contracting joined forces with Ravensdown, the long-established fertiliser science company, to create a new presence in northern fields. The story began in 1991, with Jason and a single truck. He’d seen how there was a need for ground spreading expertise. Having grown up on a dairy farm, he was well

Today, Jason and his wife Helena run a fleet of four fully optimised spreader trucks fitted with Ravensdown’s high tech proof-of-placement tracking technology. There’s also a small and light mini spreader for small jobs and lighter soils. In tandem with building a selection of spreading hardware, Jason has built up a skilled team who can deploy their payload to maximum effect and maximum efficiency. You’ll see their distinctive green and white trucks out on the road and out in the fields from Dargaville to Kaikohe, Whanga ˉrei’s rural edge, all the way to Mata. It’s a vast area to cover, but Jason and the team

enjoy working with the stunning Northland scenery as their office and greener pastures as evidence of their hard work. All that work is logged and guaranteed, too. The company is Spreadmark certified, the voluntary quality assurance scheme administered by Federated Farmers through the Fertiliser Quality Council to ensure that fertiliser is accurately applied. Spreading Northland offers clients proof of placement certificates as soon as the job is finished. Reminder about service line safety on farm

Rural Northland landowners are being reminded of their responsibilities around the upkeep of power lines, poles and underground cables that supply electricity from the Top Energy or Northpower electricity networks to their property. These service lines are the overhead or underground power lines that generally run from a property boundary, road or street to your house or other farm infrastructure. Service lines are owned by the landowner, so the responsibility of upkeep sits with the landowner. Top Energy and Northpower are asking rural property owners to regularly check their service lines to ensure they are in good condition and do not pose a safety hazard or fire risk. If unsure of the condition of service lines, people should phone their electrician to have the lines professionally assessed. Things to look out for on service lines are: • Poles and cross arms — older wooden poles and cross arms can degrade over time. Is the pole thinning and cracking? Is it still standing straight? Cross arms can look thinner in places as the wood rots or become crooked and less secure on the pole • Insulators — are insulators in place for all lines, and are the lines sitting on top of the insulators, or have they fallen off on to the cross arms • Is vegetation in the lines, which can be a safety hazard

People are encouraged to call Top Energy (Far North District) on 0800 867 363 or Northpower (Kaipara and Whanga ˉrei Districts) on 0800 104 040 for advice if they have any concerns. “Have a look at your service lines and think — does it look right? If you have any concerns at all, give us a call,” says Northpower Customer Excellence manager Rachel Wansbone. “It is worth keeping on top of any need for repairs before the situation becomes dangerous and expensive to fix and minimise the risk of someone being electrocuted. Work on your service line does not need to be completed by Northpower, you can use your electrician or a contractor, or we can put you in touch with the right people to help. “We regularly do safety inspections on our network lines, and if we find any unsafe service lines, we’ll contact the property owner and let them know what work is needed to make them safe. In some situations, the lines are so unsafe that we have no choice but to immediately disconnect them. This is something we would like to avoid by helping ensure that service lines are kept in good condition by the land owners,” she says.

Moreover, because fire can sometimes be caused by trees or bamboo touching power lines, property owners must have trees and vegetation within four metres of Northpower and Top Energy’s overhead power lines removed by an authorised arborist. Northpower also offers free safety disconnects to landowners who need to clear vegetation around their lines. In case of fire, phone 111 immediately to report the location. Top Energy’s isolation process is at topenergy.co.nz The obligations of landowners and safety sentiments are backed by Federated Farmers Northland president Colin Hannah. “I recently worked with Northpower to get electricity disconnected so I could

clear trees under lines on my boundary and across a paddock to my pump house. I was well aware it was my obligation but also in my interests from a safety perspective — for myself and any contractors,” says Mr Hannah. “We will be working hard throughout the year to spread the word to Northlanders working the land to reinforce the electricity safety messages being put out by Northpower and Top Energy. When you consider farmers can have multiple electricity connections to assets like woolsheds, cowsheds, water pumps, implement sheds, homes and workers’ quarters, there is plenty we need to keep an eye on.”

their emissions thousands of miles from here. Sadly, they have no affinity for this land; they have no love for this land — it is a commercial transaction. The impact of this is that we will have to shoulder increased rates, be at higher risk from fires in our region and suffer a loss of employment from the beef farms that existed previously. This income will not be spent in our towns nor provide employment for our children. It is going to be difficult to continue to carry on the traditions of love for the land and the great food that comes from it. The story will begin to fade.

Moreover, because this region is GHG neutral, should our farmers and growers have to pay a tax to produce top-quality food? Maybe it is time we took a leaf out of the Europeans’ book that they have come to the realisation that one size doesn’t fit all. It is our time for Northlanders to keep producing environmentally friendly food without the encumbrances imposed on us by those in Wellington, unnecessary burdens which could sink us beneath the waves.

They get criticised for just about everything that is possible from various questionable groups, whose credentials are sadly lacking when compared to the efforts of our farmers protecting the environment. The land is their land; it is where they live and is often where they play. They have an affinity for their land — it is their life. That is reflected in the food they produce, and they have a great story. The vista across this region is fantastic, and it is no wonder that visitors are in awe of what we have in and around this region. It is not surprising when the Significant Natural Areas and exotic forests make up 40–60 per cent of our local body areas. This network of plants includes a range of 36–54 per cent of grasslands that breathes in the CO2 and transpires out the fresh oxygen for us all to luxuriate in. Our farmers work within this panorama to produce food that is world-class at the lowest footprint on this planet of ours. It is highly likely that the food the region produces is already at carbon zero. The reasons for this assumption are many. We have seen a drop in dairy cow numbers of 30 per cent since 2017 and an increase in good beef farms being sold for exotic forest plantings. There has also been greater than a 50 per cent drop in sheep numbers across the region. To the point, it is now becoming difficult to find shearers to shear what is left. We are seeing foreign companies buying up our land to plant trees to offset

Back from the past by Amy Fifita

DeLorean Motor Company has been teasing fans for months about its revival and newly engineered electric vehicle — DeLorean EVolved. It is due to appear at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18 as part of the company’s rebranding before showcasing itself on the Concept Lawn on August 21. The original DMC 12 is a muse for the new sports electric vehicle. Before the company’s decline, three other concepts were being designed, including an offroad vehicle and a bus. Unlike the first DeLorean, the specifications are expected to be more powerful than its petrol-powered predecessor. DMC does not want to stop at the EVolved; it plans to offer customers a full range of luxurious vehicles. The company intends to become a full-line manufacturer with more than a coupe on offer. Since the car’s 40th anniversary, the company’s Twitter account has been dropping hints about the electric vehicle, gradually revealing pieces of its new design. Although reasonably active on social media, DMC is keeping a mysterious tone on this elusive vehicle. There is much anticipation from DeLorean enthusiasts. In 2021 the company sold 40 Nonfungible tokens (NTF) created by street

artist and enthusiast Madsteez. Each NTF represented a year and had the look of a spray-painted vehicle and background, with some having an open-door view of the inside of the vehicle. There were other tokens available and bonus items for auction winners. The extra prizes were for specially selected years marked in DMC history and included signed merchandise and mint condition posters of Back to the Future. Director Robert Zemeckis made the DMC 12 iconic in his 80s film but initially planned to use a refrigerator as the time machine. Out of concern that it set a bad example for children who might re-enact the movie, Universal Studios Amblin Entertainment warned against it. The director’s solution was to choose a car he wanted, and the DeLorean became the time-travelling vehicle. The movie made the car a pop icon that is still remembered and collected today. People keen to find out more can sign up for exclusive early access to the DeLorean website, which is currently a countdown and a rear view of the car.

DMC is making a comeback in the vehicle industry with its DMC 12-inspired EVolved electric vehicle expected to appear in public this August

It gives them the opportunity to see the website a day earlier than the rest of the world and, hopefully, more information on DMC’s next model of vehicle.

The company’s rebranding shows the evolution to electric, and with promises of more models, what will the future hold for DeLorean Motor Company?

The ‘grandfather’ of Kiwi tractors by Andy Bryenton

Politician, historian, author and farmer Robert McNab has many claims to fame; however, his purchase of New Zealand’s first tractor is a milestone in rural life. Robert McNab was an extraordinary figure in early New Zealand. Born near Knapdale, close to modern-day Invercargill, he was the only surviving child of a large family. He confirmed his powerful intellect when he became Dux of Invercargill District High School in 1879. Robert trained in the law but remained interested in farming, and his progressive outlook and insight into history gave him a desire for modernisation. Fast forward to 1902, 120 years ago, when news of a novel new device caught Mr McNab’s attention. He had previously looked at traction engines and steam tractors as a way to improve farming efficiency. During the Boer War in South Africa, the British Army had experimented for the first time with internal combustion. Now that technology had come through into farming, with the invention of the Ivel three-wheeler, a kerosene-powered tractor that promised to revolutionise farm work in the United Kingdom. It wasn’t just the farming power of the Ivel or its use of a side-mounted PTO wheel for running threshers, stationary mills and crushers. It was its durability, which Robert McNab knew any machine tackling the New Zealand pastureland would require. It was all fine and good,

31

Ivel in 1904, and soon he was the owner of the first internal combustion tractor in New Zealand. The Ivel was a world first in other ways. One of the first boxer-style horizontallyopposed engines with two spark plugs and the first tractor with inflatable tyres. In fact, a single tyre, the front steering wheel boasted a thin, motorcycle-sized tube to help keep it rolling straight when the two steel, cleated rear wheels deployed their eight horsepower. Robert McNab’s Ivel weighed just under one and a half tonnes, making it much lighter than the monster traction engines of the day and more fit to work on small farms.

he reasoned, to buy a new kind of tractor if you lived near to the works in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, but what if it broke down in Gore or Gisborne?

The commissioning of an Ivel as an armoured ambulance in 1904, and its successful testing in Canada, convinced McNab of its toughness. He purchased an

Get the most from every drop by Andy Bryenton

With fuel companies reaping immense profits, war and supply chain issues causing grief, and motorists paying the price at the pump, drivers want to wring the most out of every drop of petrol. There are people who do this for fun; hypermilers. Competitive in their parsimony, these ultra-frugal motorists vie for the title of most miserly and, more importantly, most ecologically efficient. Huge distances have been covered in normal cars by hypermiling heroes; now, we can share their top tips. 1. Service your car. Clogged air filters, tyres not inflated to the right pressure, worn bearings and shocks, even sludgy engine oil. All these things create friction and waste. The aim of the hypermiler is to convert fuel into power without losing it as noise and heat, so a well-maintained car is key. The fuel savings can be staggering. 2. Plan a route. Hypermilers plan their trips to avoid things like stop-start traffic, hills, long waits at lights and corners, and other fuel-devouring diversions. That’s because the biggest waste of fuel is slowing down and losing momentum. Hence rule three: 3. Drive without brakes. Not in an unsafe, action-movie sense, but in terms of avoiding braking when you can. Be super aware of the road ahead, deliberate and smooth in your actions, and aim to cruise at a low rate of RPM (engine revolutions per minute).

rather than aggressively is the key to saving fuel, using momentum to conquer hills rather than your right foot. Some hypermilers even suggest that driving barefoot is best, as it allows for more nuanced throttle control. By following these tips, you could gain those few extra litres for every 100 kilometres, and with current fuel prices, that adds up to money in the bank.

CROMPTON

ENGINEERING LIMITED Design and General Engineering

Hypermiling is the extreme sport of fuel economy racing, but tips from this world of frugal driving can help ease the pain of punishing petrol prices

4. Windows up, weight out. Drive with your windows up to reduce drag and take off things like roof racks and unnecessary ornamental spoilers. You don’t need downforce like a race car on your little Civic or Corolla, and you don’t need lots of junk in the boot either. Stow it in the garage to reduce weight and save on petrol. 5. Electrics off. Air conditioning may be a life-saver in the summer, but it

chews fuel. If you need it, set the air to recirculate and put on the thermostat at about 20 degrees. Don’t run big, secondary amplifiers for in-car stereos, unnecessary light bars and rally lamps, or a mess of phone, navigation and device chargers either. 6. Slow down. Not to levels of sluggishness that create a line of angry fellow travellers, of course. Driving smoothly
