Nominations for the Northland Regional Council’s inaugural Environmental Awards 2019 have opened and run until 5pm Sunday, March 31. “It is a chance to highlight the ‘can-do’ attitudes and remarkable contribution Northlanders are making to help our environment thrive, and which we think deserves to be celebrated. Essentially, the awards are about recognising and celebrating kaitiakitanga in action,” says deputy chairman David Sinclair. “Caring for Nor thland’s many communities and unique environment is a massive job and one the council simply can’t do by itself. Fortunately, all over Taitokerau, we have got vast numbers of committed individuals, groups, schools, tangata whenua and businesses collectively aiming to make a real difference.” Examples include efforts to get rid of pests and help native life flourish, planting waterways and wetlands and implementing soil conservation practices to improve the way land is managed. “The awards will feature eight categories to cover a broad range of environmental enhancement projects and activities, with a ninth supreme award presented to the most outstanding entry.” Categories cover environmental action in the community, pest management, education, water quality improvement, industr y, leadership, innovation and kaitiakitanga. Entrants can include individuals, community groups, schools, tangata whenua, businesses, leaders and projects, activities or contributions, which must be located within Northland

and demonstrate a significant benefit to the region’s environment. “Winners in each category will receive a $1,000 cash prize and trophy, and the supreme award winner will receive an additional trophy they can hold for one year.” “It is free to enter, and you can submit yourself, or put forward a nomination for someone else with their approval. Judging will take place from April 1–12 with finalists announced on Monday, April 29.” A public field day will also be held later this year for winners to share their knowledge and experience and showcase their work with the rest of the community. To nominate or enter online entry go to nrc.govt.nz/environmentalwards. Further information is available from the council’s marketing and engagement team at events@nrc.govt.nz or freephone 0800 002 004.

Dairy award winners Wellsford 50/50 sharemilkers Colin and Isabella Beazley were named the 2019 Northland Share Farmers of the Year. The Northland Dairy Manager of the Year is Lorraine Ferreira, and the Northland Dairy Trainee of the Year, Daniel Waterhouse. The Beazleys are milking 330 cows on Neil Jones’ and Wendy Crow-Jones’ 163ha Wellsford property and have entered the awards twice previously and were third placegetters last year in the same category. They believe their strengths lie in the flexibility of a splitcalving system. “This allows us to keep more control of our costs and ensure workload stability. Another strength is our family support, they are always there to help us out if and when we need it,” says Colin and Isabella. Lorraine Ferreira began relief milking whilst still at high school, after moving to New Zealand from Zimbabwe at age 15. 23-year-old Daniel Waterhouse is a farm assistant on Brian Jackson’s 700cow, 550ha Dargaville property. Runners-up in the Northland Share Farmer of the Year competition were first-time entrants Charlie and Emma Adair contract milkers on Dean Adams’ 275ha Whangarei property milking 850 cows. Third place went to Matthew and Kourtne Snedden who contract milk 400 cows on Sue and Scott Narbey’s 146ha Helensville property. Kokopu Farm manager Stuart McGregor placed second in the Dairy Manager category. Stuart works on Kerry and Megan Chestnut’s 340-cow, 110ha property. Third place was Simon Robinson who works on Tapora Trust’s

Living with laminitis in horses by Ann van Engelen Jenny Heperi owns Living Laminitic Free and has nursed many unwanted, neglected and abandoned miniature horses and ponies back to health from laminitic attacks under the umbrella of Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven.

J

en had ridden horses since she was two years old until eight years ago when she had a serious riding accident that left her with two broken ankles. “I knew I would never ride again and have channelled my love for horses into owner education especially regarding laminitis and Cushing’s disease, which goes hand in hand, along with insulin resistance and equine metabolic syndrome,” she says. “My husband Lindsay and I help people nationally and internationally. We live on a 10-acre block with a score of equine cuties that arrived unwanted, neglected and in need of rehabilitation

and care. Our property started evolving into a horse haven seven years ago when we rescued a miniature horse, and we became a charitable trust a year ago. “Taking in unwanted minis and ponies has been life-changing. I am frustrated by the general assumption that only minis suffer from laminitis and am devoted to raising awareness on the prevention of laminitis and how to manage if you are unlucky enough to own a laminitic horse.” The crisis regarding laminitis, Cushing’s disease and founder in the equine world became apparent with so many rescue horses arriving, so Jen took what the horses had taught her during Jenny Heperi has nursed many horses and ponies back to health from laminitic attacks

seven years and started her business Living Laminitic Free. “So many equine owners were contacting us for advice, support and rehabilitation for their horses. All equines can be at risk no matter what size as seen throughout New Zealand in the last 12 months and Living Laminitic Free is undoubtedly making headway with education and rehabilitation work. “Too many horses are being left to graze solely on lush green grass, which is often high in sugars, high in potassium and actually low in salt (depending on the type of grasses). By adding processed feeds with high sugar and potassium levels can equal tipping any size equine into a state of subclinical laminitis right through to founder. Part of Jen’s journey was connecting with Jenny Paterson from Calm Healthy Horses. “We work side by side with equine owners sharing knowledge on how to keep horses in our modern environment that is creating many health challenges because of the way they are kept,” says Jen. “Without the right balance of minerals and vitamins their systems can eventually crash from high levels of sugars and potassium and lack of salt. “Horses with laminitis can live just fine without grass in their diet 24/7 and have hay and chaff plus balanced minerals and proper nutritional products. We are grateful to Jenny for supporting us with essential products for our rescue animals.” Jenny launched a product called SOS and asked Jen to

trial it. “We saw amazing results for laminitics and use it daily in our rehab work along with balanced vitamins and minerals, plain salt, omega-3 oil and a very simple chaff diet. Processed feeds are eliminated through the recovery process to keep sugars and potassium levels as low as possible. “Horse owners are becoming very aware that laminitis and Cushing’s is heading towards being the number one cause of death for horses worldwide, and growing numbers of equine are prone to equine metabolic syndrome. If they get EMS, it’s a slippery slope, and more younger horses are suffering.” Jen and Lindsay have rehabilitated more than 63 horses at their centre and support people wanting to rehabilitate laminitic horses on their own properties. “We continue looking after Mini Ha Ha’s existing contingent with the support of volunteers and sponsors. An example, is 17-year-old Sushi, with a lovely light coffee coat and white mane. She arrived four years ago, barely able to walk. A sign of poor health was her thick wiry coat, but that is now virtually all gone. She was a broodmare who couldn’t breed any more so was passed to the next person, who put her out onto grass with clover 24/7 long term. After years of being on a compromising diet, she crashed.” Sushi’s special friend at the haven is nine-year-old Tonto. “Before coming to Mini Ha Ha, he’d been kept in a paddock with five pigs, grazing on lush grass and eating pig pellets and household scraps. On top

Horses with laminitis can live on a diet with less grass and have hay and chaff, plus balanced minerals and proper nutritional products

For Jenny, taking in unwanted minis and ponies has been a life-changing event

of other health problems, this horse has a broken crest that will never come completely right. “People all around the world seek help through our Living Laminitic Free

Facebook page. They are prepared to change the way they are keeping their horses as opposed to traditional ways to keep them healthy, and that is a positive step.”

MARCH 2019

Protecting future generations by Paul Campbell and Ann van Engelen

Earle Wright grew up in Tapora and is the second generation farmer on his property three kilometres from the Kaipara Harbour. Passionate about the harbour, he has found himself in fierce opposition to a proposed landfill for Auckland planned for the nearby Dome Valley.

“M

y parents were the first settlers after the war, and I run the farm now and am the youngest of seven children. My wife Gaeline and I are dairy farmers, and our young stock goes to the runoff, which is 60 hectares, and we have early spring calving in mid-June. We milk five months of the year twice a day and five months once a day.” The country is traditionally sandy and dries out in the summer. “In the old days when our parents settled there were up to 30 odd dairy farms, but now there are four left due to people moving into horticulture with avocados becoming the biggest industry in the area now.” Earle’s father encouraged him to farm, and he progressed from wages to

lower order sharemilking. “We ended up 50/50 sharemilking for my parents and we purchased the neighbour’s farm and leased my parents’ property for five years in the late 90s. We eventually brought them out so they could stay on the property and retire.” The property is part of the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, an iwi organisation focussing on the wellness of the Kaipara Harbour. “I have been in the group for 12 years now. I had enough of people putting farmers down, so I put myself forward. We had the farm soil mapped and looked at our waterways, fertiliser, nitrogen use and effluent systems. “I wanted to make a positive difference and started free environmental survival lessons at Tapora school. a wetland with them, and now I teach the role of kaitiaki (protecting the environment) and why you plant trees. By planting trees, you lower water temperatures allowing biodiversity to grow and now my farm grows eels and whitebait. “We work in together to better the harbour which is a 650,000 ha catchment, one of the biggest in New Zealand and our issue is sediment. Every year 750 tons goes into the Kaipara Harbour, a truck and trailer load every 22 minutes 24 hours a day. There is a rahui on scallops, as the seagrass they live in is getting smothered by the sediment. We have fairy tern, and rare birds out from here that people don’t realise are there. “We need to protect it, but now there is a plan for a very large dump to go at the top of this area. It is craziness, and Maori have a saying ‘you don’t put a toilet in your pantry’.” Earle is referring to a proposed Dome Valley landfill to take Auckland’s rubbish that awaits council resource consent. Dome Valley and Wellsford and Warkworth residents fear the landfill plan is a threat to the Kaipara Harbour, as it imposes on the Hoteo River catchment. They have formed an incorporated society, Fight the Tip: Tiaki te Whenua. The petition asks ‘That the House of Representatives urge the government to ban landfills near waterways’. “Many local people put food on the table by going to catch fish daily for their family — it is their main food source,” says Earle. “We are so reliant on the

harbour and the waterways. To put a toilet in your pantry is totally wrong. What happens in 50, 100 or 200 years time? At present, we are dealing with issues from forestry 150 years ago, and we don’t need any more, or the harbour will die. “The harbour, the people that live around it and the communities rely on a healthy environment. It doesn’t add up that they are wanting to put a massive dump in the middle of this area. It will be a disaster waiting to happen.” “The waterways that go through the dump go through to Hoteo entrance where we have mussels and seafood, this is our food source. The dump plan is counter-productive, and we hope they find another place for it. Minds focus on the short term, but

we need to think generationally. What we do today is what happens tomorrow. Hence I work with the school, and in 20 years’ time, the children are going to be our leaders. They need to have a dream and a voice now. The Kaipara is a life force — if it dies, we die. You can’t divorce yourself; it is our problem. The Fight the Tip petition, calling for an end to landfills near waterways anywhere in the country, is open until March 31. It can be found and signed at parliament.nz/en/pb/petitions/ document/PET_83735/petition-ofmichelle-carmichael-for-fight-the-tip-tiaki.

ach season the family orientated couple appreciate not just the produce they grow, but the staff helping them as well at Bay Blueberries. “We love blueberries, and we have a hard-working, enthusiastic team of key orchard, seasonal thinning and harvest staff. We have a strong culture based around having fun on the job as we grow our fruit and berries,” says Marian. “Each individual plays a unique role in our team and our seasonal workers often return annually.” The company have achieved a Department of Labour approved Recognised Seasonal Employer status and been granted an Agreement to Recruit, allowing them to employ some seasonal orchard staff from Vanuatu to bolster their team locals. “We bring people in from Vanuatu as there is a staff shortage here in New

Zealand. The men who come to work with us are valued and knowing that their earnings support their families is encouraging.” Graham and Marian were supreme winners of the 2016 East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards where judges said the couple had committed themselves ‘in good and bad times’ to their business and industry. Judges described their orchards as immaculate, well-tended, tidy and healthy. They also commended their ‘stunning’ social conscience, excellent staff management, commitment and family approach to staff welfare. “Graham and Marian utilise each other’s skills and play to their strengths. The Hirsts take an innovative approach in and outside the orchard gate, and create relationships wherever needed to grow their business.”

the most sustainable manner possible,” says Marian. “Under the Bay Blueberries brand, we produce a range of fresh and frozen products for export and local sale. “I researched growing blueberries as we had a tough season in the apple industry along with many other growers. We needed extra income, and we trialled some plants and started with a small commercial crop. Another blueberry grower at the time encouraged us at a field day when we thought our blueberries were failing and then a grower from Waikato was kind enough to give us time, advice and insight into the industry. “There has been a breeding programme here, and I like growing New Zealand varieties. Some varieties are susceptible to the weather, we grow Centra Blue, which produces well and suits our market. We also grow Velluto Blue, which has different characteristics and flavour.” Marian says there is a lot of risk being a grower and she admires people who make a go of the industry. “Blueberry growers are going through some significant pressure at present, and we are in a bubble, which has some people wondering if they should stay in the trade. There has been a swarm of people entering the industry, and this has put pressure on all suppliers. That is one of the reasons prices have dropped for the berries. It is a case of too much product affects everyone, and some growers will struggle to stay afloat. An increase in the availability and volume of other seasonal fruit also impacts on demand and returns for growers.

“You also have climate and pest issues such as if it rains before harvest the fruit will split and you can lose a lot of your crop. “We try to grow as simply as possible without being certified organic and try not to apply any chemicals to get rid of pests. We have a cover over top of the fruit, which helps with bird pressure, or we would also lose a lot of crop, these are all things we contend with.” Having berries grow in tunnel houses help the couple manage the rain and growing conditions for some of their volume. “The farmers’ markets are important to us as they are our direct link to

Helping arthritic joints (Part 2)

by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

by John Arts

Many who contact me with joint problems have already tried joint health supplements with little or no success. We make what appear to be minor changes in dosages, and within a few months, most have significant benefits. Most joint supplements are heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate (GS). The reasons are that some of the original research into supplements that can help joints was mostly focussed on glucosamine. A second reason could be that glucosamine is relatively inexpensive. Older style formulations typically have something like a 4:1 ratio of GS to chondroitin sulphate (CS). The most recent research shows that the most effective compound is chondroitin, but glucosamine is also important. I started experimenting with different ratios of GS to CS. I found that a 1:1 ratio had a significant impact on joint health. I later began to review the scientific literature and found there were many studies on the benefits of CS. It is also worth noting that CS is available as a prescription medication in more than 20 countries including Europe. On the basis of this research, I reformulated my joint supplement that

a daily dose has 800mg of CS, 800 of GS and 200mg of a 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. In most cases, I start people on a double dose delivery 1,600 mg of CS and GS and 400mg of 95% curcumin. Scientific evidence is helpful in the understanding of disease processes. However, the real test is to whether something actually helps people. I spoke to a client yesterday who experienced significant improvements in her thumbs and knee after only eight weeks on higher doses. Next month we will continue this discussion and look at more benefits CS has on cartilage function. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Opposition to a proposed landfill in Dome Valley is gaining momentum. It is right that it should. A landfill there is wrong on so many levels, including the impact on Kaipara, and I support those who are objecting to the proposal. Of course, it is only a proposal (at this stage) and the company proposing it, Waste Management, will say they have done due diligence, entered consultation, and failed to find a more appropriate site north of the Harbour Bridge. Proponents and there seems to be very few, other than Waste Management, will even imply that it is yet another case of NIMBY (Not in My Backyard), which tend to plague developments of this nature. It is not. It is, in fact, far from it. It is a genuine attempt by sincere people to stop a proposal that would if implemented, have a disastrous effect on the pristine Dome Valley environment, and our beautiful Kaipara Harbour with hazardous waste from the landfill carried into the harbour by the Hoteo River and tributaries that run through the middle of the proposed site. If that was not reason enough to justify strenuous opposition, there is the traffic impact. The landfill is predicted to add 300 return trips by waste trucks and 150 by light vehicles to SH1 a day, with this number set to increase to 500 waste trucks and 250 light vehicles return trips

Kaipara Harbour

by 2060. Moreover, this is on one of New Zealand’s most dangerous roads. My understanding is that at least 11 people have died on the 12km stretch of State Highway 1 between Warkworth and Wellsford since 2006, and there have been countless crashes, many serious, in that time. So, this is anything but a NIMBY situation and the people behind a petition to stop this proposal in its tracks have every right and justification for taking the action they have. I have met them. They are sincere. I support them. Google Dome Valley Landfill Petition to sign it. There is also a Facebook Page — Fight the tip, Save the Dome.

Cuke — a ‘cocktail avocado’ by Erica Faber, Just Avocados Ltd Orchard Productivity Manager

If you’ve looked up into an avocado tree and seen little cucumber-shaped avocados, you have discovered cukes. Cukes (also referred to as cocktail avocados) are seedless avocados that grow in the tree and will hang to full maturity, just like regular pearshaped avocados. Botanically, there are two main reasons behind the formation of seedless fruit: 1. Parthenocarpy — where fruit develops with out fertilisation such as bananas and some citrus cultivars. 2. Stenospermocarpy — where pollination and fertilisation have occurred, but the embryo doesn’t form or aborts before the seed is formed (like an avocado cuke). In both cases, the plant must continue sustaining the development of the fruit in the absence of seed formation. Fruit development is controlled by carbohydrates, sugars and phytohormones (auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins). In the case of cukes, instead of these resources being supplied by the developing seed, the tree itself or the mesocarp (the fleshy part) of the young fruitlet provides sufficient hormones for the fruitlet to ‘hold on’ and develop into a seedless fruit instead of falling off which is what usually occurs. Exactly why cukes form isn’t clear. Surprisingly, there is little research

and none very conclusive into the phenomenon of seedless avocados. Most research tends to support the hypothesis that differing levels of carbohydrate reserves are related to the success, failure or partial success (as in the case of cukes) of fruitlet development. Genetics and female sterility are also thought to be a cause and, in some instances, you may even come across a tree that crops only cukes every year.

Some people believe it’s caused by low temperatures, but cukes occur in different regions of the world with very different temperatures during the pollination and fruit set period, which tends to rule that theory out. Certain producers globally have established a market for cukes and ‘cocktail avocados’ can now be found on the shelves of supermarkets and in high-end restaurants.

There are laws you need to comply with when you are building whether you are hiring a builder or doing the work yourself. If you want to build your own house and you are not a licensed builder, you have to get an owner-builder exemption. Ask the council for information they have about your property they can tell you about local and regional plans, and how they might impact on your project. You might need to apply for resource consent or other permits specific to your area. The more you know, the better prepared you will be, your plans will be better informed, and you might save time and money by making a good building consent application. You could also avoid the need to make last minute changes or costly amendments during construction. Building on an empty section is more complicated than altering or renovating an existing house. It involves more paperwork and legal processes whether you build from scratch or move a house onto the section.

When buying a section find out about and land use restrictions, district plan rules, resource consents and land survey and find out about your land and whether your ideas will work, including consents or permits you might need to meet legal restrictions. Once you have got an idea of what you want to build, you can also purchase a project information memorandum (PIM) from your council. A PIM can

help you decide whether your planning and building project is possible and practical, and will help you and your designer create effective plans. You might also find useful information in a land information memorandum (LIM), often purchased prior to buying a property. However, it’s not projectspecific and may be out of date. Your most up-to-date information will come directly from your council.

What lies beneath Some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days may by now need the foundations revisited because over time piles can move and deteriorate, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination would determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. It causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving or may be continuing to move. It all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. That involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there is a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job, and different repilers use different methods. Some cut holes in the floor for access under the house, and some lift the entire building on jacks to make room to work.

Ensure you have a building permit, other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance and discuss with council what permits and consents you need before starting any project. When doing other alterations to older homes, it is best to note that between the 1940s and the 1990s lots of building materials in New Zealand contained asbestos. Asbestos that’s in good condition, sealed or won’t be disturbed is relatively safe, but it can cause serious health problems if it’s damaged or you intend to drill, sand or break it. It is almost impossible to identify asbestos by eye. The product can be found in houses, roof tiles, old panel type fences, sheds and cowshed material to name a few and is a significant health hazard. You are not allowed to remove or drill into it. If you think or know your house or building contains asbestos, talk to a professional asbestos removal company before you begin any building work. Removing and disposal need to be done by a licensed asbestos removal licence holder under

the 2016 regulations. There are two classes of asbestos removal licence Class A and Class B. An asbestos assessor provides air quality monitoring during removal work, inspects the

Timeframes and costs Building or renovating a home can be a complicated task, and it is recommended before purchasing a section to build a new home on, you should research the section and consider how its location could affect building costs. Most new builds come with plans and are pre-priced with all costs included, double check before starting that this is the case and there are no hidden costs. Ask who is liable for extras if the builders do not do their job correctly as you do not want to be charged for their mistakes or slack workmanship. Ask the right questions and make sure your tradesperson isn’t telling you what they think you want to hear. Check your timeframes and budget are realistic and that what you want to be done is possible for your house. Verify any potential contractors’ references and if they have done similar projects before and if they can start and finish when they say they can. Ask what other jobs they are working on at present and have clarification of who will be doing the work; themselves or an apprentice or subcontractor. Make sure the brief is clear and meet with your tradies to discuss the details of the brief. Ideally, have a document everyone can refer to throughout the project, and update it when things change. Make sure everyone has a clear understanding of the required level of

quality and finish, who is responsible for what and the contract terms. Be as detailed as you can be from the start and specify things like where lights and powerpoints should go, list all the different appliances and confirm with your main contractor who needs to do what for each item. Confirm as much as you can before work starts, and make sure that anything that is important to you or that involves a lot of money is in writing. Missing information can cost, for example, if a kitchen renovation goes

over budget because you haven’t confirmed with the main contractor at the outset, that you need an instant hot water tap installed and additional outdoor light. Put such requests in writing to be included in the quote. Once the job is finished, check you are given you all the paperwork and warranties relating to the work. Keep any certificates such as energy work certificates from an electrician or gasfitter, as these are needed to get council sign-off on the work.

Renovating your home If you are renovating, it is essential to ensure you use licensed tradespeople and get consents where you need to complete your project and make sure it is legally compliant and acceptable. When renovating or doing work on your home, the more you think about upfront, the better it is likely to go. There is a lot to check and consider before you commence your project and start hiring designers or contractors, and accept contracts or quotes. Step one should be deciding ‘exactly’ what you want and make a list of everything you would like with a note whether it is important to have, nice to have, or non-essential. It will help you work out your priorities if your budget needs altering and will help the project run smoothly. Check your rights and responsibilities when you build or renovate. When you need building consent, what you can do yourself and what you need to hire a licensed professional to do. It is also a good idea to consider installing home sprinklers at this stage as this is the easiest time to do it. Unless you are planning to stay in your house for a very long time, avoid overcapitalising, or spending more on your home than what it is worth, so work out what your maximum spend is. Once you know your budget talk to people who have done similar work, check out online tools or have an informal chat with a builder or two.

You will need to factor in costs for the labour of builders, and other trades, building materials, fixtures, insurance. The cost of a policy to cover renovation work can be up to two times your annual house cover, so speak to your insurance company early to make sure you budget enough, contingency and possibly alternative accommodation. As a very rough guide, building projects in New Zealand average around $2,000 to $2,500 a square metre, though this varies hugely depending on your location, the size and type of project and the materials and fixtures you use. A building worksheet and more information are available at consumerprotection.govt.nz.

Digital breakfast by Jill Dickie

Kaipara District councillors, Anna Curnow and Libby Jones, are thrilled to have world-class speakers coming to the Kaipara to share their experiences on increasing digital connectedness. The event is open to the public from 8am on Tuesday, March 26 at the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall. “I am really excited about the opportunity to hear about how other parts of the world address issues such as adequate internet access and digital inclusion, especially for our rural communities. We don’t often get a chance to speak directly with people with this level of experience,” said Anna Curnow. Two speakers, Robyn Krock and Chris Pederson, are travelling from the United States to share their knowledge. Robyn will be discussing how increased access to broadband or other internet-enabling technologies in rural communities can further educational, health and profitability of farms. She has written a thesis on the topic of local food systems within a community.

Chris leads development efforts related to initiating community development, workforce, broadband expansion and digital inclusion programmes. His talk will focus on how bridging the digital divide can help vulnerable populations and improving digital literacy. Other speakers include Ashna Khan, Emeline Paat-Dahlstrom and Eric Dahlstrom. Libby Jones echoed her colleague saying “it is great to have such speakers in Kaipara willing to share their experiences on increasing digital connectedness, which is vital for all aspects of our economy.” For more information contact Jiveen MacGillivray at jiveen.macgillivray@ northlandnz.com.

The way we were Today if you go to a farm implement saleyard, you will find tractors the size of half a house with cabs fitted with air conditioning, armchair seating and every other conceivable luxury. You will find balers, tedders, seed drills and cultivators that are equally large. They have come a long way from the early tractors and farm implements you will find in the Packard Motor Museum. The first farm implements came into being as far back as 1701 with Jethro Tull’s mechanical seed drill, but older cultivating technology went back as far as the Babylonian Empire. The first tractors (traction engines) to come to New Zealand ran on steam. Our museum displays four of these, a Burrell named Bert, a Fowler, a 1908 McLaren and a Garrett named Annabelle. Compared to the steam tractors which generally weighed between six to twelve ton, our display of early petrol wheel tractors from the 1900s to the 1940s would be less than two ton. The museum’s oldest tractors are the General Motors 1918 Samson Sieve-Grip and a 1909 Fitch – the world’s first four wheel drive tractor.

Technology moved for ward and tractors became bigger and more sophisticated. The museum displays an interesting collection of Massey Harris Tractors, including our 1932 Massey Harris four wheel drive, the Massey Harris 4-cylinder, model 81R from the 1940s and our latest addition, the 1938 Massey Harris model 101 Super, both cropping tractors. Other tractors of

interest are the Massey-Fergusons, the Cases, our row-crop David Brown with air-implement control, International Harvesters (Farmalls), a number of Allis Chalmers and of course the well proven Fordsons. To go with the tractors is a collection of early implements such as our wooden Duncan seed drill, the McCormick Deering reaper-binder, a Massey Harris reaper as well as various horse drawn implements.

Crops in autumn

At this time of the year, feed crops and pastures can be toxic to livestock particularly when frosts, overcast or cold weather follow a period of rapid growth. “Nitrate poisoning can occur when the plant uptakes more nitrogen from the soil than is able to be utilised,” says James White, commercial extension manager for Seed Force. “It can affect many species but most notably forage brassicas, short-term ryegrasses and oats. Grazing strategies such as not running hungry stock onto at-risk crops or pastures and reducing their intake by providing a supplement such as hay or silage, or a feed with low nitrate levels, will help minimise the risk. “Allow time for livestock to adjust to feed crops by gradually increasing the allocation over time. During high-risk periods, feed the pasture or crop in the afternoon as nitrate levels will typically be lower, particularly on sunny days. “All stock can be affected by nitrate poisoning, but cattle and younger stock are most susceptible. Nitrate test kits are available so farmers can test their own crops, or samples sent away from analysis. Levels exceeding two per cent of dry matter are considered unsafe. “Nitrate poisoning can happen very quickly, so check stock often during high-risk periods and animals showing any sign of illness should be removed immediately.” Acidosis is another risk factor when feeding forage

brassicas, but this can be minimised by introducing stock to the crop slowly, ensuring animals are not going onto the crop hungry and providing access to supplementary feed. Brassicas also contain anti-nutritional compounds (SMCO and Glucosinolates), but these can be managed through a slow transition and adequate supplementation. Bloat can also be an issue if feeding frosted brassica crops. “Careful transitioning is essential when feeding fodder beet crops, particularly to cattle. The feed should be introduced to the animal slowly, and the feed allocation gradually increased; this allows the animal’s rumen to adjust to a new type of feed. “It is important to know exactly how much feed you are giving animals over this transition period. Crops should be measured, and plants sent away for dry matter testing.” James cautions against using ‘book value’ dry matter measurements as these can vary greatly with fodder beet and have a big impact on allocation due to fodder beet’s high yield potential. “During the transition period, which should last for at least 14 days, give the animals plenty of room with wide feedingfaces. Never run hungry animals onto the crop over this adjustment period.

TURIWIRI GARDENS CONTRACTING

Ensure the animals’ nutritional needs are being met by providing the correct supplement with their crop diet. It will vary between different classes of stock. “Young cattle should be vaccinated with a 10-in-one vaccine before they are introduced to fodder beet.”

Sheep are at less risk of acidosis on fodder beet so don’t need the careful transitioning used for other stock. While they can self-regulate their intake easier than cattle in the early stages of feeding, they should still be introduced to the crop gradually.

DAIRY

25

ADVERTORIAL

Ensuring milk standards are met The latest fresh milk food safety regulations are a real gamechanger for refrigeration businesses supporting the NZ dairy industry. In fact, a considerable amount of equipment currently in use may be breaching the new standards. That’s why Total Refrigeration, one of the most highly regarded general refrigeration engineering experts in Australasia, has formed a joint venture with Action Manufacturing, one of the largest manufacturing businesses in New Zealand with 40 years of experience in heavy transport refrigeration. Freezflow has capitalised on the two companies’ strengths to develop the Freezflow Icebank. The self-contained, lockable, waterproof and highly insulated structure can stand freely in any location near the milking shed. The Freezflow Icebank instantly snap chills milk, reducing required run times and dependence on old equipment. Richard O’Flaherty, the founder of Total, recognised the limitations of many of the current offerings in the market and believed a locally designed and built product could deliver on promises that competitors could only aspire to. “The ability to store peak energy in the form of ice, to reduce loading on equipment and peak power use, is effectively an ice battery. Proven internationally for a range of uses, from storing energy to cooling high-rise

buildings, the technology is as simple and reliable as a home freezer. Additionally, by building a system that can adapt to ever-changing refrigeration compliance and advances in technology, the Freezflow Icebank is well future-proofed. The outstanding thermal performance of Action Manufacturing’s own Omnipanel has been proven with more than 25 years in the refrigerated trucking industry in Australia, and make it perfect for housing the Icebank. Dairy farmers Darryl and Sharon Kay heard about the Freezflow concept and couldn’t wait to have it trialled on their herd of approximately 450. As Darryl explains: “Having a single independent structure, with all componentry out of the dust and weather, all prewired, plumbed and ready to go has huge advantages.” Complexity and the additional cost of various contractors required to install other systems are renowned to increase the advertised price dramatically. Freezflow Icebanks come with a new refrigeration system already complete, new pumps and heat exchangers,

The first Freezflow Icebank unit installed at a dairy farm in Dargaville. The 2m x 2m x 4m long self-contained unit is suitable for a herd of up to 500 cows

meaning their on-site commissioning is quick and easy. Furthermore, Freezflow understands the value of both data and milk itself

and is leading the way in providing instant and verifiable data through mobile connections, thereby ensuring milk quality and payment for such.

Operating since 2015, the joint venture between Total Refrigeration and Action Manufacturing has been capitalising on both companies’ strengths to develop the Freezflow Icebank, a new technology that delivers reliable and efficient milk cooling on-farm. The latest field-testing has proven both the reliability and performance of the Icebank, reducing the risk of milk damage, subsequent cost and potential breakdowns of old equipment.

What we haven’t got we can get!

New regulations for dairy farms have always proven contentious, especially when they come with an investment price tag to implement. The payoff according to those who engage in negotiations for international trade, is that cleaner, more efficient and — pardon the wordplay — homogenised practices and standards in the milking shed will pay off in terms of a better price on a competitive global market. With more changes on the way, or set to come into effect very soon, surrounding a raft of issues from milk chiller efficiency to washdown and environmental concerns, there’s robust debate out there about this ‘big picture’ vision, which posits a better marketing position for our primary products through meeting or exceeding global standards. The counter-argument that the necessary investment in core plant such as milk chillers and pre-chillers or ice banks, water heating technology and hygiene upgrades, for example, is a tough ask coming out of several years of non-optimal farm gate prices. One response seen statistically is a drop in intensive stocking rates, with efficiencies elsewhere in the over-all dairy farming system making up for less head of stock. The knock-ons such as less intensive use of pasture leading to less demand for applied fertiliser have environmental effects, which are positive for the perception of farming in general with the urban public. The real benefit of

smaller but higher output herds is evident in the financial figures, and industry experts say that such efficiency will be necessary to be internationally competitive. It’s about production, and perception the world perceives New Zealand dairy products as the gold standard, and that is a key driver of good prices. A very persuasive argument can also be made for turning that primary product into even higher value secondary export products, such as our world-renowned cheeses before it reaches the wharf. With the first significant change, milk chiller operational standards and

cooling times, already the capacity of the nation’s refrigeration professionals, farmers are being encouraged to see the changes, which augment existing guidelines from the Ministry for Primary Industries and rules from primary milk buyers as an investment in future price positioning on the world stage. Coming alongside new animal welfare rules, which come into force in October, it means a time of streamlining and rationalisation for the dairy industry, with the ideal outcome a robust international demand for one of our core exports intended to deliver dividends in years to come.

ADVERTORIAL

Products of quality Kleantech is a New Zealand family-owned and operated business that is proud of the customer service and aftercare support they provide their clients. When looking for the very best quality water blaster, drain cleaner, commercial vacuum cleaner, PTO machine or pump, experience is the Kleantech watchword. “My daughter Emma has handled the spare parts for some 20 years,” says owner Mike. “Ring her and ask for a seal kit for something we sell and I guarantee she can tell you the part number, cost and availability 99 per cent of the time without looking it up.” The company sells through distributors, which means there is someone in a town near you if there are any issues with a machine. “We believe in old-fashioned service and responsibility and looking after the locals, and we believe our machines are the best in the country. Our quality machines can outperform others and can be serviced locally, so before you jump at the cheapest deals online or at other stores, call us first. “We will tell you the facts, and whether a particular machine might be a collection of parts from different sources, or the genuine factory article,” says Mike.

“We have extensive knowledge of servicing all makes and models of cleaning machines in New Zealand and have hand-picked equipment suited to all conditions, while competitors may often change suppliers or models.” Mike says Kleantech still sells machines they had available in the year 2000 because they are good and work well. “Kiwis are a very different breed to the rest of the world, they fix things instead of replacing them, so quality is our top consideration. Distributors can get any parts or machines needed from the team. “We will go the extra mile to provide fast service and endeavour to organise same day delivery if possible. “My sales managers are Ross in Te Aroha, Warren in Auckland and Andrew in the South Island. They provide demonstrations of our equipment for clients in the various areas. “No-one beats our knowledge in the field — no one. Don’t get caught with some of the website sales as people have discovered they are often buying trouble. We recommend buying local

Preserving breeds for diversity by Andy Bryenton

The long history of selective animal breeding in agriculture has led to an interesting conundrum. While the carefully selected traits we have bred for, during the centuries, are displayed in the livestock, which successfully feeds a burgeoning human population, other, rarer breeds face extinction. While nobody doubts the necessity of breeding for disease resistance, hardiness and productivity, it may be these other quirky variants, which hold the key to solving future problems in farming. Certainly, we have come a long way with the science and practice of selective animal breeding since the early days of agriculture. Compare the bones of early Sumerian sheep with those of their modern counterparts, and you’ll see a world of difference. Careful husbandry across the centuries has brought us superior dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep with wool that’s easier to weave and pigs, which produce more Animal breeders preserve genetic heritage — breeds such as this Texas Longhorn may solve future farming problems

bacon, to name but a few. Yet, there are previously popular breeds, which may contain the genetic code to defeat future diseases, environmental challenges and other unforeseen changes. An analogy from the world of vegetable and fruit cropping, the devastating Irish potato famine was caused by a disease, which only affected one breed of potato. It was the single variety most prevalently used to feed the Irish population at the time. Nearly all of today’s bananas are the Cavendish variety; a similar blight could leave us without the popular fruit on supermarket shelves. In the animal kingdom, breeds such as the Texas longhorn, the Buckeye chicken and the Florida Cracker sheep

have dwindled into the mere hundreds, while popular breeds like Holstein cattle number in the millions. However, the longhorn, for example, is very drought resistant. The Cracker sheep resist parasites and can handle high humidity. These traits may prove vitally important in years to come. It’s happened before in the 1800s, European domestic pigs lost the gene, which caused large litters of piglets. It was reintroduced by crossbreeding with Asian swine, ensuring ham and bacon to the present day. Of course, protecting a rare breed also means protecting a piece of living farming history and a unique kind of creature for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.

Government tackles rustling

29

EADON HIGHLAND FOLD

New rules to crack down on livestock rustling will come into force following the passing of the Crimes Amendment bill. “For too long farmers have been urging successive governments to assist in their battle against the scourge of livestock rustling. This coalition government listened, and now we have changed the law,” says Minister of Justice, Andrew Little. “Farmers and rural communities make a huge contribution to the wellbeing of New Zealand and our economy. Meanwhile, livestock rustlers have undermined rural people’s livelihoods and their right to be safe in their homes. “The two new offences send a clear message that this coalition government will not tolerate livestock rustling, whether it is sheep, cattle, beehives, sheepdogs or other animals that are stolen or harmed. “Today is a new era, where we have finally classified livestock rustling as it should be, as criminal offences in our criminal code. Importantly, this step also gives police and the courts the tools they need to rope in the rustlers. “Federated Farmers estimates the cost of theft of livestock to the farming community at over $120 million every year, and a survey indicates about a quarter of their members had stock stolen in the last five years.” These crimes are often committed at night

in the more remote parts of New Zealand. Small-scale, opportunistic grabs of half a dozen sheep or cows are relatively common, but police and MPI say sophisticated gangs with links to organised crime are increasingly mounting well-planned raids on farms. Victims of livestock rustling and a survey of more than 1,000 farmers showed almost 60 per cent of thefts had not been reported to police. In one case a one Whanganui farmer lost 1,400 lambs worth about $120,000. “The new offences, which will be added to the Crimes Act 1961 are theft of livestock or other animal, carrying a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment, unlawful entry to land used for agricultural purposes, where the offender intends to steal livestock or act unlawfully against specified things, such as buildings or machinery, on that land. That offence carries up to 10 years imprisonment.”

The power of three YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three.

It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki is the master of the triple layout. Bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow more than 900kgs and pack 450 into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort, carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice,

A civilised kind of beast The ute is the new sports utility vehicle. That’s the message, which is resonating through the automotive world alongside the trend that the sports utility vehicle is the new family car. As those who want to work and play hard switch from big off-roaders to a new breed of quieter, more comfortable and capable utes, the array to choose from has become vast. The ideal balance for new ute buyers is struck between practicality and price. That’s where SsangYong come in they have carved out a niche with their Actyon utes and the Rexton SUV, climbing in popularity alongside fellow South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia as Kiwi motorists embraced non-Japanese build quality and affordability. Branching out recently with characterful vehicles like the Tivoli crossover, the company, which has been in business since the 1950s, and once provided the South Korean fire department’s fleet has turned all of its experience and design skill to producing a ute, which can match or exceed everything in its class. The Rhino has more than a catchy name. It looks muscular and powerful, with strong lines and bold wheel arches supporting a swept-back cabin design and a large no-nonsense tray. Available with a two-litre petrol engine in its two-wheel drive entry level only, the bulk of the spectrum of choices for this ute pack in 4x4 on demand and a Euro-6 compatible 2.2l diesel powerplant, designed to be smooth and quiet while still allowing an impressive 2.8 tonne towing capacity. A six-speed box, auto or manual, delivers crisp gear

Refined but practical, the Rhino hits the right spot between car-like quiet and full powered utility

changes to further enhance that sense of effortlessness, while great care and attention have gone into isolating engine noise and road noise for a more relaxing drive. The result is a refinement of the formula, which made the Actyon capable and work-ready the Rhino adds further sophistication. Impressively, it does so without sacrificing any of the

tech and safety features modern drivers demand. At a price which, even for the middle-of-the-range Sport Diesel 2.2 6 speed manual, just touches $35k. Even better, every Rhino ute sold helps its endangered namesake in the wild, with donations from each truck helping take down poachers and protect the Rhino’s habitat.

The next generation by Andy Bryenton

Kids love to emulate the people they look up to. That’s why so much playtime for the very young is spent pretending to be firefighters, astronauts, sports heroes or as we all remember using the same tools as our parents. Remember the first time you used a hammer and nails, a saw or a paintbrush at kindergarten? So it’s no surprise that youngsters want to follow in their parent’s footsteps on the farm, too. Helping kids be just like mum and dad, and join them for work and play — Polaris release their smallest Ranger just for juniors

four-stroke 150cc engine amidships, the littlest Ranger is stable and easy to control. It really is no toy. It can carry loads on its back tray, handle dirt and mud, and seat two. The biggest feature for parents’ peace of mind is not part of the machine. It’s the Ride Command smartphone app, which is bundled with it. It allows parents to control the top speed of their kids’ Ranger from the cab of their own off-roader, or even determine who can ride and when with a remote passcode ignition option. There’s even the ability to ‘geofence’ to draw a line around an area on a map of your property in which it’s safe to ride. Set speed limits for different zones or crossing the invisible fence can shut the motor down. For families who want to ride together or parents who want to safely introduce their kids to the world of all-terrain driving in a controlled fashion — this is the next evolution.

Moreover, in this case, in their parent’s tyre tracks because, just as the side-by-side or quad has replaced the horse for rural work, so too has a mini version of the trusty off-road vehicle replaced the pony for many country kids. We’ve all seen tiny 50cc dirt bikes and four-wheelers. Now Polaris have come up with something that’s at the same time practical, safe and just plain cool. They’ve taken their award-winning Ranger side-by-side and shrunk it down to kids’ size. It’s an exact replica of the big machine, which mum and dad use on the farm or out on the trails, but it’s compact and stuffed full of safety features. While still being far, far more than a toy this 150cc machine can and will go most anywhere the full sized Ranger may lead. All the safety options, which make a full-sized ranger great for adults are there a wide stance, thick, knobbly tyres, a full roll cage, side nettings and even a pair of helmets.
