A record number of exhibitors were on show at the Northland Field Days
“We had good steady crowds and a record number of exhibitors were present with more than 550 businesses and organisers setting up the event. “An estimated 25,000 people came through the gates with Saturday being the busiest and many people told me it had been a great family day out. “There have been some really good comments about the development we have made this year, including the new bathroom facilities.” Fonterra’s lower predicted payout did mean dairy farmers were more careful with their cheque books but exhibitors said there have been some good sales made with cars and tractors. “The field days generates a lot of income for Dargaville as Northland’s
biggest event, it keeps Dargaville on the national map and it is run by one paid employee and 30 enthusiastic volunteers,” says Lew. Competition was fierce with the quad skills, tractor pull, logging sports and sheep trials all receiving a good number of top flight entries and Gas and Tyre Services won the best site award. Organisers officially closed the Field Days on Saturday afternoon at 4.30pm and while Lew says the sun had taken its toll on both organisers and exhibitors, they were excited on what had been an incredibly positive experience. “This year was thrilling and we are looking forward to 2016, we have huge plans to make the event and the grounds even better,” says Lew.

Water sources key to growth
3
A strategic water management study is to be commissioned to identify areas where water supply and potential water infrastructure could deliver economic growth and other benefits to Northland. The study involves the Northland Regional Council, economic development agency Northland Inc and the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI) Irrigation Acceleration Fund. A tender process has begun to seek a specialist provider to carry out the water management study. It will consider the potential demand for irrigation, ways to improve management and use of current available water resources, identify the economic costs and benefits of storage and irrigation development, and highlight potential infrastructure development opportunities. Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says there are a number of potential benefits from carrying out the review. “From a resource management perspective, the issue of fresh water quantity and availability has been highlighted as a significant focus during our regional plan review process, including the stakeholder workshops held last year.”
The study is targeted to be complete by September, to allow decisions on future steps to be made before the end of the year. The project had its beginnings when Northland Inc promoted the concept. Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy subsequently encouraged Northland communities to apply to access the Irrigation Acceleration Fund during a visit to the region during last year’s

drought. The study was also noted as an opportunity in the recently-released Tai Tokerau Northland Growth Study. Mr Shepherd noted that Northland’s share in the project to date had been funded through the Northland Regional Council’s Investment and Growth Reserve. However, any future work is expected to also require investment from stakeholders who are likely to benefit.

Andrew’s previous management experience has been in Whanganui, Hawkes Bay and Whakatane — all having very differing climatic environments. Whilst in Hawkes Bay he won the New Zealand Ewe Hogget competition and the Peren cup for the top Perendale farmer in New Zealand. “When our children started school, the area we lived in became important as I did not want my children going to boarding school like I did. The move was a strategic one and we have now been at Kapiro for seven years, says Andrew. “It is important that our children have access to good education and the best opportunities for their future so they can be self sufficient when they get older. In his time at Kapiro he has completed his last papers through Massey university. “I enjoy the variety of this job and it would have been unlikely that I would have had the opportunity to have farmed in so many different locations and to this scale if I had purchased the family

of the property takes co-ordination,” says Andrew. “Having a variety of stock helps the pasture as each animal cleans up after the other in the paddocks, for example the cattle clean up the sheep worms on the ground, the different animals also provide a diversity of income and with the size of the land we own, we are able to utilise it all to the best use.” “The goal is for the whole property to be successful, and we identify the areas of land that are not economic and high cost due to gorse and erosion or other factors and in those areas we plant pine trees, putting the land to the best use possible.” Andrew completed a Graduate Diploma in rural studies extramurally through Massey University and

He is a member of the Northern North Island Farmers Council and is also their representative on the Beef and Lamb Farm Research Group which is responsible for allocating funding for research and reviewing research that is underway. “We are a voice for the farmers on what they wish scientists to study depending on issues they are having on their farms. “I enjoy being involved in this role as the people are really down to earth and we have common goals. We get to give back to agriculture and are like-minded — the farmers are really smart and it is satisfying knowing you are making a difference.”

hat makes 31-year-old David Kidd’s win more special, is that up to three years before, Mr Kidd had a desk job helping farmers obtain loan finance.
Amidst rolling hill country on the west side of the Kaipara Harbour lies the farm of New Zealand’s 2014 Young Farmer of the Year.
However, tiring of the office routine, he decided he wanted something different. So Mr Kidd and his wife Janine bought an equity share in a herd of 1,200 Angus and Angus-cross cattle grazing at Shelly

Beach, just north of Helensville. It’s a stone’s throw from his parent’s beef and sheep farm where he grew up. After leaving high school Mr Kidd headed overseas and when he returned, he signed up to do an aviation degree. “But at the last minute I pulled out. I followed my heart and did an agriculture degree at Massey University instead. “About two years into that, I decided I didn’t want to go farming. However, I got interested in all the industries that support agriculture. They’re huge.” He got into one of those industries — banking — working for the BNZ, servicing its dairy farmer clients in the Waikato. “I spent four years working out of an office in Matamata. In 2008, Mr
Kidd got a secondment to Perth where he got a close-up view of farming practices in the dry and arid climate of Western Australia. “It was one heck of an eye-opener. Things there always look brown. We say it’s drought if there’s less than 1,000ml of rain. “But as long as there’s 400ml they can get a crop to grow. It made me start thinking of what I wanted to do.” After returning home in April 2012, Mr Kidd and his wife bought a stake in a beef herd and became full-time farmers. Although he had been around farmers all his life, Mr Kidd agrees he had lots to learn. “I live 20 minutes from Mum and Dad (Diane and Richard). It’s fantastic

It was a good result.” On the first day of the final Mr Kidd and the other finalists did interviews and exams covering topics such as financial management and human resources. The second day had a more practical bent. “I had to do some ploughing — I had never done any of that in my life before. There was also fencing, driving machinery, installing an irrigation system, welding, and animal health tasks.” In the evening, the contestants all had to deliver a speech to sponsors and guests and take part in a quick-fire quiz on farming knowledge. “It was a good competion and I met some interesting people. I was absolutely thrilled to win,” says Mr Kidd. “It was a neat challenge and a

Despite being named the country’s best young farmer, Mr Kidd says there is still a lot to learn. “I consider myself to be on a learning curve. I don’t know everything.” In the future David says he and Janine want to buy their own farm. He has no regrets about getting out of the office and onto the land. “There’s never been a day on the farm where I thought I’d rather be in an office.”

This means the rider’s body exerts and relaxes their muscles during the ride. Many riders do not use saddles in order to get the maximum benefit from the horse’s movement. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
ADVERTORIAL
Soil Awareness at Forefront
by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
After two years of intensive work, 2015 has been declared The International Year of Soils by the 68th United Nations General Assembly. Soil and water are the two most important ingredients for all life on our planet and without them life would not exist. As a soil fanatic, it is gratifying that soil is recognised, as it has spent many years below the scene, as dirt, with very little recognition of its powerful ability to look after and support all life on our planet. Farming would not exist without it. As a commercial grower I used to think that dirt was just a medium to stand the plant in. The supposedly real deal was the synthetic NPK fertiliser to boost plant growth, and it did. However the synthetic nature and solubility of these types of fertiliser has over the years demineralised our soils down to dirt, taking the essential life out of the soil. The perpetrator of the NPK balance sheet theory, Justus Von Liebig made the observation that plant
growth yields were in exact proportions to the minerals removed from the soil. Incorrect, if this was accepted as fact, how can we explain nature’s ability to achieve growth when chemical fertilisers are not added; such as the planets natural forests, jungles, savannahs and the likes of the Serengeti plains, the oldest self sustaining farm on the planet. If this NPK theory is relevant, the problem of soil degradation would not be an issue today. Von Liebig’s theory has no foundation in nature fertility as it leaves out the biological cycle of life in the soil. In the United States Department of Agriculture, year book 1957, Von Liebig’s NPK theory was discounted as having no basis in the overall picture of soil fertility or management. Liebig, himself denounced the balance sheet theory before his death. Amazingly, this unscientific theory
has dominated and degraded soils on the planet for the past 175 years. How does that impact on present NPK soil science doctorates? Why have science and the agricultural research centres held so tight to this false principal in its recommendations to the farming fraternity? Could it be possible that this false theory sits well with industrial farming and the manufacture of chemicals? The soil is a living entity containing such diverse microorganism, that today, the study of these organisms is one of the most complicated (and misunderstood) sciences. Of all microorganisms bacteria make up the greatest number in the society of the soil. They are diverse in species and perform many different functions in the fertility cycle. Some are involved in fixation of nitrogen, both from the air and from the breakdown of organic matter. They control the nitrogen, carbon, sulphur and iron cycles in the soil. Bacteria are predominant in the creation of enzymes and the breakdown of mineral elements into available plant nutrients. These little creatures are designed and programmed to manage the soil. Agrissentials fertilisers contain bacteria, algae, fungi (especially mycorrhizal, the number one micro organism) protozoa and actinonmycetes. These microorganisms are the first to dine at the mineral table converting all minerals to a plant available form. Agrissentials multi– mineral, microbial rich fertilisers can introduce you to this superb natural system. Agrissentials fertilisers contain both minerals and micro-organisms to remineralise and bring life back to soils. Another added benefit with Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers is that they can be applied at anytime (so you don’t have to wait for rain) whatever the weather. Don’t get caught in the fertiliser queue — get your fertiliser on now. There is a better way. Give us a call today and make a change for good. FISHING AND HUNTING
Tournament hooks big prizes by Ayla Miller
A keen fisher, Debbie Bunns has been organising the Houhora One Base Game Fishing Tournament for the best part of ten years. The tournament will be held from 7am March 18 to March 21 finishing at 4pm. Debbie and her co-organiser Lisa Lilly say it is the location of the competition that sets it apart from other game fishing contests. “The stunning location is a major drawcard for people coming to our tournament. Anyone can enter as long as they are members of a fishing club affiliated with the New Zealand Sports
Fishing Council. The competitors can launch from either west or east coast from Hokianga to Whangaroa. Boats can stay away two nights giving anglers the opportunity to fish the Three Kings area.” says Debbie. “The most rewarding aspect is seeing everybody having a great time. The potential of good pasture
The need to consider pasture quality as well as quantity in feeding livestock has increased exponentially in recent years with the economic growth of the industry, and this is particularly due to a move towards production to customer specification, particularly for carcass weight and timing of supply. As stocking rates have dropped and per animal performance targets have become more important, pasture
quality has become a critical constraint to achieving potential growth rates. Findings from New Zealand and

stem are turned into quantitative estimates of nutritive value by the computer package Q-Graze, which adds the effects of grazing to estimate the growth of young animals on that pasture. Measuring the nutritive value of a pasture can be done by direct laboratory assessment or by indirect visual assessment. Laboratory measurements include metabolisable energy (ME), digestibility, fibre and protein. How much do animals eat and why? What drives potential intake? The potential feed intake of animals is determined by physiological state (e.g. pregnancy, lactation, sex) and genetics. The animals’ health and the feed offered determine whether the potential is reached. Intake is influenced by the amount of pasture offered to the animal, commonly estimated as pasture cover, pre — and post-grazing dry matter yield or height. The more that is offered, the more that can potentially be eaten, up to a
maximum where increased pasture dry matter yield has no more influence on intake and liveweight gain. This has to be balanced by the need to keep pasture quality high, ensure good regrowth and maintain economic stocking rates.

Maize silage, when made properly is a great feed for dairy cows. To maximise the returns and ultimately profit from feeding maize silage to dairy cows, farmers need to understand a couple of critical points. These are the ensiling process itself and the nutritive value and balancing of the product. Maize plants in the paddocks are covered with both detrimental and beneficial microorganisms. Microbes do all the work during the fermentation process of making good silage but they can also do all the damage if not properly managed. By chopping at the correct dry matters, properly packing and sealing to exclude any air, an environment that allows lactic acid producing bacteria to break down the glucose and other plant sugars is created. The increasing levels of lactic acid cause the pH to drop and the acid producing bacteria to stop producing acid. This leaves excess
McLENNAN
sugars available for the cow’s diet which in turn leads to increased milk production. If silages are adequately packed and at the right dry matters, there is a much greater chance of maize silage fermenting into a stable silage mass. Residual oxygen in the silage mass creates an environment for heating and slow fermentations. This has an enormous effect on silage quality, with degradation of protein and depletion of plant sugars having the biggest effect on forage quality and therefore cow performance. The issue of air is also very important during the feed out phase. Exposure to air stimulates yeasts (that were on the plant at harvest time) causing heating and spoilage the use of a quality silage innoculant like Sill-All. Maize silage starch and dry matter digestibility will increase with time in the silage stack, so adjusting rations or diets
will be critical to maximising cow health and production.

Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF, Laurie Forestry Ltd
Domestic market mainting stable platform There is a mixed bag of news in this month’s report. Domestic prices from local sawmill owners are maintaining the usual stable platform for the regions forest growers. Meanwhile export markets offer up some gains amidst a market segment displaying all the hallmarks of having the speed wobbles. Last month I suggested CIF settlements in China would soften US$5 per cubic metre and, unfortunately, I was right. However, the price drop has been more than matched with shipping cost reductions and a weakening Kiwi dollar against the Green Back. The bottom line ‘at wharf gate NZ’ has been a net increase in wharf gate prices in February. The cloud on this otherwise superficially glowing horizon, is the potential for further CIF settlement declines. Some commentators are suggesting there could be a further US$5 to $10 per cubic metre drop in March and April settlements with the market indicator A grade at US$115– $120 per cubic metre being the talk of the town. This is against February settlements at around US$125. At the reduced levels and an expected firming in shipping costs, March prices at wharf gate New Zealand would not be what we wanted to hear. The big question mark is will the declining interest in the NZ dollar and a resurgent interest in the US dollar off-set some otherwise sobering news. Time will tell. In China the cause of our focus on prices is an economy which continues to maintain a negative sentiment even in the face of central Government policies which have relaxed credit conditions for new home buyers.

In China a new home is a 60 to 300 square metre apartment depending on where you sit in the wealth stakes. Apartment construction is very much at the forefront of the key drivers in the Chinese economy. Across most Chinese cities the 15 to 30 storey apartment block has a 60% chance of having been built with concrete that has been held in place until it dried with NZ Radiata pine in the form of boxing lumber or plywood. In short the NZ Forest Grower very much relies on a Chinese consumer agreeing to the purchase of a new apartment, and at present they are doing so in much
less numbers than is good for them or us. Constrained credit lines are a factor but it is more likely an exit of the capital gains seen in recent years has removed the speculation element from the market. House prices are continuing to fall although recent comment suggests this is likely to be in a bottoming out phase at present. The mood then is one of overall negative sentiment. In recent months there has been a significant increase in volumes of log and lumber being imported from Russia. A resurgent volume of lumber out of Chile and utilisation of what was a huge stockpile of Douglas fir and Hemlock logs out of PNW add to the mix of competition for NZ Radiata pine logs. Add to the mix a cessation of practically all construction activity for Chinese New year (a two week holiday starting 18 February) and we have a recipe for all that may not be good in April and May. On a more positive note, pruned log prices are holding or firming across both export and domestic segments. Indeed prices for pruned export logs have rarely been higher than at present. A recent ring around my spies in both
17
Islands suggests pruned logs are also selling well domestically with prices in a firming mode. The demand and price is the result of lumber heading off-shore, primarily to the buoyant US market. It continues to be thoroughly important to remember the trees keep growing regardless and peoples of the world continue to need wood for wide ranging reasons. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember, the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees!

The association promotes the wise use of trees on farms, helping to control erosion and giving shade to animals, while plantations of trees provide a diversity of income. There are 27 branches with nearly 2,000 members throughout New Zealand and about 200 are expected for five days of information and field days in Whangarei. The conference begins on Monday morning with registration, meetings of special interest groups and guest

NEED EXTRA ROOMS?
Thinking about building or renovating? Then it’s time to start asking some questions: Am I allowed to do this? Do I need a resource and/or a building consent? Who do I need to talk to? What are my obligations? How long will it take? How much will it cost? And what can I do if it goes wrong? Firstly, a building consent is the formal approval granted by your local council that allows a person to carry out building work. Most projects will require consent and getting it is the owner’s responsibility. Under the Building Act 2004, building work which requires consent may include, but is not limited to, alterations and additions, the demolition of existing buildings, sitework and installing communications aerials. The list is long, so it is important to get the correct information from the get-go. Usually, exempted works are those which will not impact on the structural integrity or safety components of the building. However, no matter how minor the project is, all building work must be carried out in accordance with the Building Act, the Building Code and the local authority’s district plan. Some projects may also require resource consent and this should be sorted at the time your plans are being

Start with a solid foundation
Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital. But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings in Waikato, that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to re-align the house on this new foundation.
To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under
the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to make plans in advance.

Recycling water by Ayla Miller
With dry summers becoming increasingly common, water is no longer something we can take for granted. Whilst those in town have been enjoying summer without a worry in the world, rural residents are concerned about how full their water tanks are. There are many different ways to conserve water and recycling greywater is a good place to start. The gravity or manual greywater system recycles water from sinks, dishwashers, washing machines and showers. This uses gravity to bring greywater to areas that need it, eliminating the need for pumps or electricity. This is a general type of system that can be filtered, depending on use. A basic component of a gravity system is the diverter valve which can direct the water to filters or to disposal areas. A typical gravity greywater system channels water from a source to mulch basins or gardens. Packaged greywater systems use electricity or a pump to send greywater to different locations around the home. These use filtration or disinfection processes to cleanse the water which can be stored in a tank until needed. The Northland Regional Council recommends gardeners check soil moisture before watering and if it is moist below 10 centimetres you can skip the watering altogether. Checking the soil in dry weather ensures you water only when it is really needed. Greywater contains many beneficial nutrients that boost gardens if natural detergents are used. Soaking a garden every few days conserves more water and encourages plants to send roots deeper to seek out moisture. Making sure to water the ground rather than the leaves means plants take up moisture through feeder roots. Watering by hand or a well-designed

Save Lives Canterbury Farmer gets 17 year battery Life Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulfation buildup on internal lead plates.
Battery additive
Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem,
DO NOT RELY ON THE ALTERNATOR A car battery can be treated for around $5. Available at :
0800 36 33 36 – www.recharge.net.nz
According to Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner, sulphation is very easy to treat and prevent premature battery failure with their simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Programme, “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting 8 to 10yrs in our battery conditioning programme. However, most shows we do these days, we meet people using our RECHARGE Battery Conditioning Programme with 12 and 14 year old batteries often still going,” says Anselmi. “In fact last year we had 3 farmers with 17 year old batteries, one was still going strong. The last one was a Canterbury farmer at the Christchurch A&P show in November 2014, and he was very pleased with the results,” says Anselmi. “After 16 years on the market in NZ and 10 years in Australia I would not be surprised if we bettered that figure given time.” A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid electrolyte holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulfation buildup process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” says Anselmi.
“Once treated a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key, treat them early, repeat every 2–3 years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available from Farmlands and Auto-One stores and will also be featured at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in June as usual. You can
also check out the revamped website www.recharge.net.nz and the new Facebook page. Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell, treating and re-sealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.
Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.
Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

Choose from a huge range of legendary tyres!
From the successor to the Willys jeep through to aircraft and mighty military transports and tractors, Mahindra are a force to be reckoned with. Mahindra’s Pik-up is relatively new to these shores, and the fully kitted out version we were given to test drive — complete with bull bars, a double cab and a timber-and-steel deck — looks as different from its competitors in the utility sector as the outgoing Land Rover Defender did from a RAV4. If the term ‘military’ comes to mind, that’s no mistake — the Indian army, one of the world’s biggest forces, looks to Mahindra for transport. The other word which comes to mind is ‘spacious’, as the interior boasts enough room for a whole burly crew, with ample legroom and headroom for those in the back seats. Even behind a double cab, the back deck is the size you’d find on some single-cab utes, and looking at the single cab variant wellside, one can tell that these machines are made to indulge heavy, bulky loads. That means a ton on the back, four passengers, two and half tons towing capacity — and the ability to take that load anywhere.

Our test track for the Pik-up was not a parking lot (though it did slide neatly into a supermarket parking space). Not even a country gravel road. No — the Mahindra’s minders insisted we take their new ute properly off road — which meant visiting a range of coastal sandstone cliffs, rolling, rutted paddocks and steep hills. On street tyres, in second gear, the Pik-up handled terrain which would have been a television commercial for certain of its rivals. It did it all with a sense of mechanically engineered acuity — the nicely balanced click and slide of a rifle bolt. Under that tough exterior, Mahindra’s 2.2 litre turbo diesel packs parts by Bosch, and the kind of variable geometry turbocharger pioneered by the Porsche 911. Eaton supply a clever automatic differential locking system. The fivespeed manual box recalls certain great off-road utes we could name, but shouldn’t. It all comes together to create a balanced and functional whole.

Wool market rebounds After a rather disappointing start to the 2015 calendar year with large volumes of crossbred fleece wool being passed in from the auctioneer’s rostrum at the first January auction, the wool market rebounded in late January with further improvement experienced in February, due to renewed interest from the exporting trade as new orders began to filter through from overseas mills. During late January and through until time of writing in mid-February, a substantial volume of lamb’s wool was offered via the auction system with prices extremely buoyant compared to earlier predictions. Crossbred fleece prices (both full length and early-shorn types) regained most of their lost ground to reach levels around 520 cents per clean kilogram by February 12. Buyer interest in second-shear types remained fully firm with prices for these wools reaching levels just off the pace of full length fleece at around 495 to 500 cents per clean kilogram. Crossbred lamb’s wool was, as usual at this time of the year, a feature at each auction
during February and buyers were keen to bid on all lamb’s wool but with particular interest in those measuring finer than 30 microns. Those measuring 27.5 microns reached levels just above the 700 cents per clean kilogram mark, whilst 28.5 to 29 micron types received approximately 690 cents, and 29.5 micron approximately 680 cents. Coarser crossbred lamb’s wool in the 30 to 31 micron ranges also sold extremely well reaching 655 and 630 cents per clean kilogram respectively. Halbred and Corriedale wool types continued to draw very good support from the exporting trade and were keenly bid for.
Any lines of similarly bred lamb’s wool were extremely well sought after. Limited Merino wool types were offered during the early February period however those offered generally sold at levels equal to those received in Australian brokers’ catalogues, where large volumes were catalogued and with noticeable market improvement predominantly for the best wool types. Buyer comment in Australia at time of writing was that the poorer tender wools catalogued recently, but held over from earlier sales this season, remained difficult to place. Sheep numbers have been decreasing at a rather rapid rate over the past ten years and, along with that, the obvious decrease in wool volume has perhaps offered an optimistic outlook for those growers who have stuck with a traditional dual purpose sheep breed, however we have witnessed a roller-coaster wool market soaring to extremely good highs but dipping, often very quickly, to unexplainable lows before travelling along more modest humps and hollows prior to the surge beginning again. Whilst there appear to be some very good orders on exporters’ books at present with processors in places like China, United Kingdom, Europe, India, as well as Australia and local mills, there are manufacturers using wool who are loathe to commit too far ahead and some who have already indicated that they have larger than desirable quantities of stock on hand at present

and therefore will only commit to buy again once those stocks have reduced. PGG Wrightson have secured some very good forward orders, via its subsidiary Bloch and Behrens, for a variety of wool types including crossbred, mid-micron and merino types, many of which are being forward contracted with wool growers currently. Whilst forward contracts offer certainty some maybe limited for quantity therefore growers should be in contact with their PGG Wrightson wool representative early with expressions of interest. That’s my view.

Fighting corrosion the local way by Ayla Miller
A local company is importing military and aviation certified products that will change the way people deal with corrosion. The Whangarei based company, Corrosion Control NZ, owned by four Kiwi shareholders with Tom Muller as Commercial Director, aims to save customers’ money whilst being environmentally friendly.
Dairy Feed Systems
“We want to contribute something to the local community,” Thomas says of his motivation to start the business. Two years ago, after speaking with councils, campsites, and those in the agriculture industry, Corrosion Control founders saw there was high demand for a product that would solve corrosion issues and decided to impor t CorrosionX products from Texas. “Our product is cheaper and lasts longer than other corrosion products. This combination means customers in general and farmers in particular will save money in the long run.” CorrosionX products are certified by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries and the company has local applicators nationwide. It only recruits “CorrosionX is proven to perform on mussel farms, the new Whangarei bridge, Coast Guard boats, Northpower equipment, rental machines, heat pumps,

tractors, fertilisers, cranes and off-shore electronics. Our products are ASTM certified by the Dulux test lab in Auckland, used by Ports of Nelson, the German Army, the RAAF, the US Navy and many more.” The product carries a farm friendly class 11 NZ MPI approval whilst stopping electrolysis and offering extreme longevity and superb lubrication values of 0.4! CorrosionX removes the further need to use engine oil or diesel on farm equipment as a rust stopper. Such old methods were causing damage to rubber and neoprene parts, but worst of all end up in the waterways. “It is affordable and real simple to apply, even to wet or rusty machines,” Thomas says. He adds that CorrosionX saves water by eliminating the need to constantly hose down machinery. Other products like Concrete and Stone Sealant, waterproofing sprays for fabrics and rust reconverter paint is also available from this company. For more information call

DAIRY ADVERTORIAL
The red revolution
Case IH have been creating innovative farm machinery literally since the days when draught horses were the measure of horsepower. And while founding father Jerome Case would have found modern tractors a strange sight, from the vantage point of the mid 1800s, it’s certain that he’d be proud to see such machines bearing his name. None more so than the new range of Case IH Puma tractors, designed with multirole versatility in mind. The Puma name covers a family of mid-horsepower, versatile farm machines — little brothers to the mighty Magnum and Steiger tractors which spearhead the Case IH fleet. While they may be smaller than these agricultural giants, they are no lightweights when it comes to hard work, and a modular design system allows them to be configured easily for haymaking, loading, bale and silage management, row cropping and more. Being versatile across a range of tasks also means having power to spare. All Puma tractors are equipped with a Case IH 6.7-litre, 6 cylinder, turbocharged, intercooled engine. This power plant has been designed with three things in mind — firstly, plenty of torque both for drive and PTO. Second — fuel economy, with 25% gains in efficiency over similar engines. And thirdly, ease of access to components like the oil filter, for quicker maintenance and less downtime. That power is sent to the rear wheels for the first time via a CVT continuously variable transmission system, such as is found in modern road cars. Here, the transmission

Colourcrete Dairy Floor Resurfacing System system constantly alters the gear ratio to adjust to the terrain, leaving the operator free to attend to concerns other than the gear lever! Case IH proudly state that their ‘big red iron’ is ready for anything, having been designed in the field by farmers. And, thanks to this input from the folks behind the wheel, operator comfort and ease of access to the Puma’s control suite have been polished and sharpened for this latest iteration. The climate controlled cab offers full 360 degree views — even a shatter-proof glass roof above.
And it’s a quiet and comfortable place to put in the long hours — a vital factor when the season calls for round-the-clock operations. Case suggest the Puma 130–160 for loader work, stretching to the 170–230 range for a long list of on-farm chores. This mid-range workhorse is big on features for a very competitive price, and should reconfirm the commitment to innovation begun by Jerome Case over 150 years ago.
