Councillor Joe Carr says the council sells the poles — which usually retail for more than $8 each — for just $5 including GST provided landowners agree to a planting plan to ensure the trees are planted appropriately and future maintenance is allowed for. Landowners have until Friday, May 29 to register an interest. The trees have been used extensively in Northland for many years to help prevent and control erosions, nutrient losses and decrease waterway pollution. “Both species have extensive root systems which help bind soil and prevent erosion, and council promotes their use both as part of its soil conservation and water quality work,” said Cr Carr. “You can visit us online for everything you need to know about establishing poplars and willows and a new online ordering form.” He said while people question the use of non-native species like poplar and willow for erosion control, they are specifically chosen because their fast growth rates which means they can begin to do the job they’re intended for more quickly. “Stabilising land and associated reductions in both erosion and sedimentation is absolutely essential for us here in Northland and sediment is one of our biggest water contaminants.”
Councillor Joe Carr
The best time to plant the trees in Northland is typically from June to mid-August. The bulk of this year’s pole supply is being sourced from a Cambridge supplier, but from next year the council hopes to be able to start sourcing increasing numbers of poles from its own poplar and willow nursery near Whangarei. The regional council set up the fivehectare nursery in Flyger Rd, Mata, two years ago. “Pole nurseries typically take three years to establish from scratch so all going well we will be able to harvest our first crop of several thousand poles for local use next year.”

Big rise in food production fees
3
by Paul Campbell
Charges for food safety and biosecurity from the Ministry of Primary Industries are set to recover almost $12 million in increased updated fees to recover costs for its services from businesses and industries. The new charges come into effect on July 1. The increase follows a review of cost recovery in February this year in which MPI held 21 consultation meetings around the country and received a total of 247 submissions. Over the next year, MPI expects the amount recovered from industry for biosecurity to increase by approximately $6.0 million to $36.4 million, and to increase by approximately $5.9 million to $61.2 million for food safety. Key updated fees and policies include: • updating around 250 biosecurity and food safety fees, charges and levies • reducing costs to small dairy processors by decreasing their annual levy and creating a new levy category for medium dairy processors • introducing cost recovery for infant formula exports • introducing cost recovery for the essential services that the
Government provides the wine industry such as setting industry standards, and helping the industry gain market access • increasing the biosecurity entry levy fee • revising the rules and fees around biosecurity transitional and containment facilities • increasing the veterinary professional hourly rate for all live animal veterinary inspections • increasing resources for approvals of registrations for trade names for agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines to reduce the processing time; and the adoption of a single export and domestic levy for poultry production. • “MPI provides a range of important food safety and biosecurity services,” said MPI’s deputy director-general, Dan Bolger. “This includes the development and maintenance of domestic and overseas standards, monitoring and testing of

products to ensure consumer safety, gaining market access, and providing assurances to overseas customers.” “Fees recovered allow MPI to provide services that are integral to the growth of our $37.4 billion primary sector export industry, keep food consumers safe here and overseas, and ensures New Zealand maintains its reputation as a reliable producer of safe, high quality goods.” At the same time as the cost recovery review, MPI ran a separate consultation which looked at proposals to introduce cost recovery for regulatory services under the new Food Act 2014. As a result of this consultation, MPI will recover costs from food businesses

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
From Wisconsin to Northland by Ann Morgan John Urban grew up on his grandpa’s 480-acre dairy farm in Wisconsin, United States, whi was in his family for 100 years. He is a third generation farmer and he cropped 350 acres for feed including maize, oats, alfalfa-clover mix, and hay for his herd of 130 cows.
H
is wife Dionne was tired of the long cold winters and sitting inside for seven months at a time waiting for the harsh weather to clear, so they decided to go on an adventure and moved to Kerikeri in 2011. They started a cattery business which she manages and he secured work as a dairy farm manager. “There is a lot of difference between farming here and in America,” said John. “Even the bugs here are not a problem. We had biting flies to contend with that would eat your stock alive given the opportunity. The stock had to stay indoors most of the year. New Zealand is like a paradise.”
They had to produce crops literally all summer to feed the herd in winter. It is all indoors in barns over there for the winter season because of the intense snow. “Cows have a much more relaxed life here as they stay on the pastures and it is easier because you don’t spend all your time making the feed for them as they can harvest it themselves.” He lived on the family property until he was in his fifties. When he was young he remembers a few old tractors, and they originally used horses to do the work. He says now the equipment keeps getting bigger and bigger just like here, a necessity of farming now days.
John believes cows have a mu more relaxed way of life in New Zealand

into the milk. I have noticed the counts are better and so far this season we are grade free, this proves we don’t need iodine,” he said. “There are a lot of things we miss about Wisconsin but sometimes when you have done the same thing for a long time it is good to go and see what the rest of the world is like and try new opportunities. “Don’t be afraid to try new things and move away from where you are used to. Meeting different people and cultures is interesting as you learn how other people do things, including farming. “It is a huge thing to leave all the people you know, to go somewhere where you don’t know anyone, but the experience is worth it. “Farms are getting larger in both countries all the time and it’s getting harder to make a living from small herds. I think in the future farmers are going to need larger herds to make dairy farming work financially.” In the ed, John was not used to not using iodine to erilise the cups
“The more cows in a herd, the quicker you have to get the feed in and everything is on a bigger scale which means bigger equipment,” he said. “Cattle here are smaller than in the States. We like smaller breeds in New Zealand like Jersey and Friesian as they don’t compact the paddocks so much and if they are heavy they muck up the land. “Northland farming is a dream to me — you can’t beat the climate here, it is wonderful. “There is a big advantage to not having a winter with snow and ice. The grass keeps growing all year unless there is a drought and there are lots of things you don’t have to worry about like frozen water cups and pushing snow. It was tough on our farm in Wisconsin.”
Makers of Biological Fertilisers We tailor fertiliser mixes suited to your soil using the Reams Soil Test (which shows what nutrients in the soil are available for plants).
Feed would come out of the silos frozen and he would have to take an axe to chop it up to size. “It is more physical farming there. We would stack 10,000 square bales of hay in summer for winter, and did lots of feeding using wheelbarrows in the stall barns. “We used to cart the grain in and scoop it out for each cow individually. We swept and limed the walkways daily. We would cut the hair off the cows udders and legs to keep them cleaner, for better milk quality.” Milking was different too. They would predip the cups for each cow with iodine and individually wipe them off with a paper towel then put the units on. “We don’t dip here in New Zealand because we don’t want the iodine to get

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
FARMING SINCE
WORLD WAR II BY ANN MORGAN
At 21, Mr Nicholas was enlisted to serve in the New Zealand tank recovery section, rescuing damaged battle units with crawler tractors and transporters. He returned to New Zealand after World War II on a merchant ship via the Suez canal and settled into a farming lifestyle.
Ron and Betty Nicholas are still farming on the same property they bought in 1951
“I don’t count myself to be anything special, I just did what thousands of others had to do when the war happened,” he said. On his return from the war in 1947, he worked on an experimental farm for a year in the Kaipara getting reacquainted with farming and settling into the job before he leased the farm he is still on today in Arapohue. He married Betty in 1949 and they have six children. “We purchased the 62 acre farm in 1951 for approximately 1,700 pounds. We then expanded with a runoff property which we had to develop from Tea tree and scrub to grassland to make the whole property an economic unit and we were then able to increase the herd. “We started with just 35 cows, an ideal farm had 60. I was in a rush to get
started, and I didn’t want to wait around because farms were hard to come by at that stage as a lot of returned servicemen wanted to buy them.“ When he first started farming he used horses to do the work. There were a few tractors around he says but not very many. “The introduction of machinery has totally changed farming as far as agriculture goes. Flush hosing has majorly improved the job. We used to sweep the sheds down with a bucket of water and a broom.” He says the quad bike and the use of tractors instead of horses and plows have obviously made work easier and the electric fence was a great introduction as it has enabled the subdivision of larger paddocks to be done much more

Ron on his quad bike, he says it has made farming so much easier
The farm now runs dry stock cattle
easily. “We used to have pigs and sell cream. Many farmers had pigs and the saying was ‘the pigs paid the rent’. It was called farm separation, the skim milk went to rear the pigs and what you made from selling them paid the mortgage, if you were farming the pigs correctly. “We made hay as extra feed, that was it. Silage has become more vogue now with the new wrapped bales available as it is easier to handle and the new feeder machinery makes it easier now to feed out,” he said. They ended up milking 50 cows on that farm and bought the neighbouring property where they also milked an extra
100 and raised steers. They are still farming drystock today. He believes the advancing of farming has definitely been positive but the amalgamation of farms has not helped the district communities because there are less people and that is a detriment to the local economy with less families being present. “It has got to the stage where it is nearly impossible for a young kiwi farmer to have a farm of their own. You are now looking at needing three to four million to buy a property as they are so large, and farmers have to milk more cows to be economic with some farms having to milk a herd of 1,000,” he said.
“It was much more hands on when I was young. We farmed and did the work ourselves. Now a lot of properties are run by partnerships or corporates who have a manager on site. “It is still a good way to bring up children, especially if they are mixing with the animals and being out in the fresh air. “These days you have to have an education to be a farmer, you just have to accept change. I didn’t have one, I left school at 14-years-old to work on my brothers farm. Another brother had wanted me to become a guard on a train but I chose farming and am pleased I did. Farming has been good to us.”

Planting to save
waterways by Ann Morgan
For four generations the Adams family have farmed in the Poroti area, and realised that keeping the water healthy is vital for future generations.
C
“When we started researching the cost of the riparian plants, it was obvious the prices were way above the budget we had. We decided to learn to propagate plants ourselves, then we would able to donate many plants for the project. After decades of intense agriculture and horticulture degrading the water quality, restoring the Poriti springs was a project the brothers embraced to ensure that the water quality would remain healthy. The aquifer supplies to local horticulture and Whangarei city, and it is one of the largest ground flows from the local mountain, Whatitiri. The family approached NorthTec with the view of hosting a horticulture course
oncerned about the water quality and declining ecology in the area of the Waipao stream, the Adams brothers made a decision that the best option to solve the local water issues, was to look after the Waipao stream themselves. In 2005 they invited the landowners and farmers in the area to a meeting to discuss options for fencing off and revegetating the waterways to ensure health was restored to the stream, not only for water quality but also for the life in the stream. “We had no knowledge of horticulture at the time but we had the belief that if something was not done soon, it would be too late, says nursery project manager Meryl Carter.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
ADVERTORIAL
Drought — World Wide Problem
by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
I’m writing this article from Fresno, California, where we have just landed our first container load of Rok Solid full spectrum fertiliser. Our USA project Manager is Rick Broderson, a born & bred Californian who has lived in New Zealand for the past 30 years managing his own business. Rick has a real passion for what Agrissentials are doing for farmers and their soils. Fresno is in the “food bowl” area of California producing meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, nuts, grapes and many other crops, but one other thing they have in common with New Zealand is the lack of rain when you need it. Just north of Fresno is the San Luis Reservoir, a huge man made lake which provides irrigation to many farmers, but through lack of rain this winter, the lake is short of the water needed to irrigate the new season crops, so everybody here is praying for rain; their livelihoods depend upon it. Rick & I are talking to many farmers and they all admit that over the past few years their soils have struggled to hold water, with reservoir water
coming onto their properties, not holding, but running straight off to be pumped back into the San Luis Dam — all at a cost. Agrissentials see a huge opportunity here in California, by bringing water retention quality back to the soil with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. The answer lies between the micro organisms and a full array of natural minerals. The microorganisms are the first creatures to dine at the mineral table converting the minerals to a plant available form. When they do this, they wrap the minerals in humus, so that the minerals don’t leach from the soil. The humus produced has water retention capacity, holding both mineral and water to be passed onto the plant as required. This is the natural system and it carries the potential to regenerate top soil, increasing the carbon content or cc rating of the soil. Agrissentials recognises soil as the engine room of the farm, the more carbon
An Agrissentials’ customer (left) showing the effects of using Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers during the dry period
produced, the higher the cc rating of the engine room (or soil). The continued use of synthetic minerals and their high solubility is burning out the carbon content of the soil and destroying the microbial life. This results in erosion of soils (Re: Dr Morgan Williams report New Zealand Government in 2004 stating that top soils were eroding at between 300-400 million tonnes per year) — straight down the rivers and into the sea. Agrissentials can remedy this situation with their multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. These two ingredients work together to restore and regenerate soils, increasing mineral and water retention, soil carbon content, drainage capacity and topsoil depth, which all contribute to the cc rating of the farm’s engine room. NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES
On the move It’s that time of year again when dairy farmers around the country prepare for what is known as Gypsy Week. Farms will change hands and sharemilkers will pack up their belongings and move on to their new farms. June 1 marks the end of the 2014– 15 season and the beginning of the 2015–16 season. In rural dairying areas, roads will be busy with stock trucks and stock if farmers are shifting them to neighbouring properties. When moving stock on the roads, farmers must hold the correct permits from local councils. Farmers should ensure there are plenty of staff on hand to help out, wearing appropriate safety equipment such as high visibility vests and helmets if quads and bikes are used. As a motorist, be patient around stock on the roads as tooting will excite the animals and this will prolong the exercise. It is important drivers follow farmers’ instructions to ensure personal safety and the wellbeing of the stock. Planning in detail is an important part of Gypsy Week and effluent on the roads can be minimised by some simple preparation, and effluent tanks must
be empty before a long journey. Make sure cows are fit and healthy before Gypsy Week and able to stand evenly on four legs. They must also have a body condition score of at least 3.0. Precondition stock, especially if they will be travelling a long way. Take cows off green feed for no less than four hours and leave up to 12 hours to process the feed. Feeding cows on straw, hay and baleage with access to water also helps. Booking stock transport in advance and estimating an arrival time for when the truck will pick up the animals means the cows have time to stand off for the recommended minimum time, decreasing the amount of effluent produced. This enables the stock to ‘stand’ for the recommended time. Check with the transport operator regarding their journey plan including effluent disposal and rest stops. Communicate with the farmer at the

Be my Guest ‘Six Principles of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business’ Press headlines that Fonterra is facing a supplier crisis of confidence and risks haemorrhaging milk to private companies as fed-up farmer shareholders react to its latest financial results, deserves some comment. Loyalty can be fickle amongst farmers when they are hit directly in their financial pockets and facing a financial slump caused by low dairy returns worldwide. New Zealand has an increasing number of proprietary dairy companies and also the Chinese are undertaking major investments in dairy processing here, in competition to Fonterra. At a Fonterra meeting I attended in Northland, Fonterra representatives confirmed they were negotiating to supply milk to the Chinese milk factory at Pokeno and that there was nothing to stop the Chinese from building more of these plants throughout the country. If Fonterra is required to supply these establishing companies with milk under the current legislation for a three year period, it will certainly I believe, alarm
Fonterra suppliers who see competitors using Fonterra milk to establish their businesses and then competing for Fonterra suppliers. I believe the current legislation should be changed and these competitors should be made to stand alone from the beginning. There are strong indications that Chinese interests are planning to buy a significant number of farms throughout Northland and elsewhere and that these farms will supply processing plants financed and built by the Chinese. Open Country, New Zealand’s second largest milk processor, an independently owned company, is looking at the options of building a milk plant at their Affco Horotiu plant or expanding its Whareroa site. It is claimed over 500

The Chinese have been traders for thousands of years. The famous Chinese military tactician Sun Tzu in 512BC wrote a book called The Art of War. The theories of his book are still widely read throughout the world today. Many Chinese businesses and others throughout the world follow the six major principles of Sun Tzu, being capture your market without destroying it, avoid your competitors strength and attack their weakness, use foreknowledge and deception to maximise the power of business intelligence, use speed and preparation to swiftly overcome the competition, use alliances and strategic control points in the industry to ‘shape’ your opponents and make them conform to your will, develop your character as a leader to maximise the potential of your employees. Clearly they are a tenacious people. They never give up. We would do well to learn from them if we are going to

Beating the rust menace
“Old oil and diesel make for good rust protection but the grubby soup doesn’t really offer more than three months protection, and the mixture eats rubber bushes, dissolves neoprene seals and kills electronics within minutes,” says Corrosion Control NZ Ltd, Whangarei director, Tom Muller. “CorrosionX gives lasting coatings, tested by Dulux and approved by the Ministry of Primary Industries and waterproofs expensive electronics,” he adds. “You can weld over it, CorrosionX simply cannot be ignited. But you can and should apply it over wet machines and it will keep them reliable. With a no-limit shelf life and a lubrication value of 0.4 it is a better lubricant than PTFE, engine oil, lanolin or grease.” Mr Muller says. “It has the same classification as lanolin! Northpower, Silverfern Farms, NIWA, Oceanzblue, Food and Plant New Zealand, Redline, Turiwiri, Manai Farms and so many others have upgraded to CorrosionX products.

Kinsey Soil Fertility Course
Neal Kinsey is returning to New Zealand explaining the essentials and finer points of soil fertility. He will be at Cambridge from 29th June to 3rd July and then in Ashburton, hosted by Golden Bay Dolomite and Kiwi Fertiliser. The starting point at Cambridge is trace elements. Many farmers’ soil tests do not even measure them; so they are not applied. Is it any wonder some farms frequently have costly animal health problems? There will be good advice on offer for farmers and reps involved in all types of farming and growing. Dr Linus Pauling, winner of two Nobel Prizes, stated: “In my opinion, one can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to mineral deficiency.” If you accept this statement, then improvements can be made in the following areas by improving fertiliser practices: Stock health; insect problems (including ticks and mites) on stock, pastures and crops; bacterial and fungal diseases; dipping, drenching and dagging regimes; fruit and vegetables that do not keep; fruit and vegetables that don’t taste at all good; kauri die-back; Psa of kiwifruit; weeds including YBG; the need
to inoculate silage; or the fact that large areas of pasture have to be re-grassed each year. One test for a dairy farmer is the effluent pond. If it is anaerobic, it will have a tendency to crust over and require constant and costly maintenance. If it is aerobic, no such problems will be observed. The pond is a reflection of the health of the rest of the property. If it is not healthy, then neither are the soil or the stock. All the above problems are related to soil fertility and can be mitigated to a greater or a lesser degree. The course will cover all essential trace elements including silicon; plus nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, compost, carbon, calcium, magnesium, and much more. Prior to the course itself, we have the opportunity to visit properties carrying out the principles of correct soil fertility. These properties have not been on the system very long, but have already showed clear improvements. For more information go to goldenbaydolomite.co.nz or kiwifertiliser. co.nz for details and registration.

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening
your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. The focus will be firmly on Kiwi inventiveness at the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® from June 10 to 13 at Mystery Creek. The theme for the 2015 event near Hamilton is ‘Growing our Capability in Agribusiness’. Organisers have created the Fieldays® Innovation Accelerator, described as ‘an exciting new initiative to accelerate Kiwi inventions’ rise to the global stage, with newly-signed sponsor Callaghan Innovation. “We recognise that Fieldays® must continue to evolve and adapt if we are to remain relevant and connected to New Zealand’s agri tech and agribusiness sector,” says chief executive Jon Calder. “In this way, Fieldays® is much more than a trade show. Our mission is to advance agriculture. “The technology and innovation that Fieldays® showcases and supports through our innovation ecosystem are products, concepts and thinking that will continue to ensure New Zealand remains a leading agribusiness nation globally. It’s fantastic to have Callaghan Innovation on board as a partner.” Callaghan Innovation’s Dr Richard Templer, says the government business innovation agency sees that “many of New Zealand’s technology exporting successes have their roots in the agricultural sector, and agri-tech continues to be a hotbed of innovation in the New Zealand economy. “Callaghan Innovation’s job is to help companies that aspire to succeed through technology by helping them with innovation advice, product development support and research and development funding.” Exhibiting in Fieldays® Innovation Accelerator is a one-off opportunity — after that, companies must exhibit in the main area.

New hope for long term back pain sufferers After nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I still could walk, there was hope.” Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that,” he said. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief.” To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Dave said. “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” said Dave. “The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent.” What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older. INZ now have a division putting them into industry as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production.

It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. After over seven years in NZ there are now thousands of people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work if you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!” IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT TO EITHER SHOW, WE WILL BE COMING TO YOU WITH OUR OWN SHOWS UP NORTH: Kerikeri on Saturday 23rd May 10am–4pm at the Turners Centre and Kaitaia on Sunday 24th May 10am–4pm at Te Ahu.

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves. “Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less,” he said. “We let the tables do the talking.” Come along to one of our shows for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.
Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that are designed for concrete roads. Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance. When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and offer increased puncture resistance. Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it then choose a Mickey Thompson tyre.
Mickey Thompson’s have: Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction if you get punctures, then mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance. The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

New site for RECHARGE Battery Conditioner at the Fieldays® “After 15 years on site K-19 right outside the main pavilion, which wasn’t even there when we started selling off that site, we have been forced to move to the other side of the pavilion to a new site — K-25,” says Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner. “Sulphation is a major problem with lead-acid batteries and the less they’re used the worse it is. All batteries sulphate — you buy them with sulphation and they only get worse till they die. “A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve those sulphur ions back into the electrolyte to hold the charge again. The battery regains its capacity and stops corrosion of lead plates. “A lot of farmers in our RECHARGE Conditioning Programme are getting eight to ten years from most batteries and some are getting a heck of a lot more by simply dosing them early, treating them every two to three years and keeping them charged. “Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell — treating and re-sealing with silicone,

DAIRY ADVERTORIAL
Foreword for ‘Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farming, 3rd Edition, Revised and Expanded’ January 2015
It has been 13 years since I wrote the foreword to the 2nd edition and 18 since I wrote the first one for this practical and useful resource. This new edition is ‘choc-a-block’ and enriched extensively due to the thousands of interactions between Homeopathic Farm Support (HFS) and its clients for nearly two decades. It is generally wise to question the process of ‘reinventing the wheel’, unless you can improve upon the basic design. In this instance, I would compare the 1st edition to the original Ford Model T that was revolutionary in its day and remains a classic but does not compare to Ford’s latest models in terms of speed, efficiency,
bells and whistles etc. This new edition shows continuity with its heritage but is so enhanced and packed with new innovations and improved formatting as to be nearly unrecognisable from its first ‘model’. Question: What’s New in the 3rd Edition? Answer: ‘Heaps’. The 3rd edition is packed with references to over 50 more animal preparations in the Materia Medica (alphabetical listing of ‘medical materials’ used in dairy homeopathy); 40 additions to the Animal Ailments section; a new and revised Quick Reference and an all-newstand-alone-yet-complementaryto the main book, section for owners of dry stock and steers, ‘Maintenance Guidelines for Dry Stock’. These new and expanded materials are included because they have come out of the experience of Tineke Verkade, her dedicated staff and their thousands of clients around New Zealand who have been using homeopathic and herbal products to tackle acute health issues on conventional, bio-dynamic and organic farms.
HOMEOPATHY The complementary system of health
It is informed by effective responses to seasonal challenges and ‘constitutional’ pre-dispositions in dairy herds (and dry stock too) by using homeopathy and herbal preparations. This edition
includes suggested solutions for specific current issues such as Thelleria ticks and environmental stresses such as Alligator weed and Kikuya as well as Liver fluke (Fasciola) and a nosode made from the bacteria that causes woody tongue (Acintonysis). It also gives indications for great maintenance tools developed and like its predecessors will become a well thumbed and valued reference. Tineke is to be commended for the ‘continuity of care’ that she provides for her patients and clients. Tineke and her knowledgeable, long serving HFS staff have been providing support to farmers and their animals since 1997. Thousands of happy clients and tens of thousands of successful outcomes are the result of the careful and attentive service of Tineke and HFS . So I commend Tineke, the HFS staff, and this great resource book to those who love and care for cows and cattle too. Susanna Shelton, BA, MDiv, RCHom, ADH Retired CEO and Principal Bay of Plenty College of Homeopathy, New Zealand, and Sydney College of Homeopathic Medicine, Australia Former Co-President and Executive New Zealand Council of Homeopaths.

In the shed with Megan Fowlie Ask questions and avoid dairy refrigeration delays Dairy companies are beginning to look at how they will move their suppliers towards taking the steps necessary to comply with pending NZCP1 milk cooling changes. Currently new sheds, significant upgrades and regular non-compliers will be required to meet the new proposed milk cooling standards by June 2016. All other farmers have a grace period until January 2018. It’s expected many farmers will delay managing dairy refrigeration issues until the latest possible time. The result will be bottlenecks around the manufacture, delivery and service. The industry is predicting demand peaking during the off-seasons over the next three years. Whether or not your pre-cooling and refrigeration has been factored into the current season’s farm budget, a lot can be done now to prepare and avoid unnecessary costs or getting caught up in delays of equipment, installation or service. Start with asking a few questions around the technology available and
the refrigeration companies in the marketplace. Check out the technology on offer. Where is this technology coming from? If the technology is not manufactured in New Zealand, then are parts stored locally rather than at an overseas location? Is this technology a ‘one-off’? Can and do other companies support it? Check out the refrigeration companies. Meeting the temperature standards will not always mean buying more refrigeration and different farms and sites. When finding the best solution for any farm a number of factors come into play: site constraints, herd size, flow rate, water source, power reliability

and variable costs. Different farms will require different solutions so are you dealing with a company that can give reliable advice? Breakdowns don’t always happen during weekdays 9am– 5pm. Are you dealing with a company that can give you assistance for support and parts and when you need it?

Using Nitrogen Efficiently
While visiting family in New Plymouth during the Easter break, I was surprised to see a sign up by a popular swimming river, the Waiwhakaiho, that it was not advisable to swim, play or drink water from the river due to the presence of algae. When I asked my children (aged 8 and 10) why we couldn’t swim here, they answered “it’s because of the dairy cows”. These days everyone has heard of Nutrient Budgets (where farmers and fertiliser consultants fill out forms of what fertiliser has been applied to the farm; what the stocking rates are; do you use stand-off pads etc) in an attempt to lower the amount of nitrogen entering waterways and causing nuisance algae and health problems. Air is 80 per cent nitrogen — so why do so many people buy nitrogen in a bag? Would we need Nutrient Budgets if our soil encouraged the soil bacterial species that convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms that plants can use? A well oxygenated soil encourages good

plant root systems and encourages those nitrogen converting bacteria. To develop a well-oxygenated soil, active calcium is important — calcium opens up the soil, encourages soil biology to create pore spaces (e.g. earthworms) for air and water movement. Applying nitrogen from a bag (water-soluble forms) creates smaller plant root systems and soil biology populations. Less soil biology results in further bagged nitrogen being needed to keep up productivity. Research carried out by Kansas State University in 2002, found that adding water soluble calcium (such as calcium ammonium nitrate or calcium nitrate) to nitrogen fertilisers like urea produced the highest yields and the highest nitrogen fertiliser efficiency.
This is because the soluble calcium reduces the ammonia volatilisation (nitrogen lost to the air). Another trial conducted by the University of Tennessee using urea calcium ammonium nitrate (UCAN) applied to wheat, found that the optimum nitrogen application was 27kg/N (compared to 54–70kg/N when using ammonium nitrate and urea ammonium nitrate). In these trials a threefold increase in yield per kg of nitrogen was observed for the nitrogen applied with a soluble

calcium source vs a straight nitrogen source like urea, ammonium nitrate and urea ammonium nitrate. So nitrogen fertilisers blended with a water soluble form of calcium can achieve an optimum economic yield by reducing the total amount of Nitrogen applied, who wins here — the grower (financially by reduced nitrogen fertiliser costs) and the environment (reduction in nitrate leaching into water courses and underground bore water). Who loses — the chemical companies balance sheet.

Growing with wool
Carpie Wool Buyers was established in 2010 by Vaughan Craig, and his partner Jane Walter. They have spent the last 25 years working in the wool industry, both beginning in the wool shed, shearing and rousing and then contract shearing.
“We saw there was a gap in the market. Lifestyle blocks and small farms needed somewhere local to sell their wool,” said Vaughan. “The bigger companies seemed reluctant to pick up the fadges so that is where we started. We worked from our home in the Kaitaia area, with an old crank press. Loading the trucks meant rolling bales up wooden planks by hand. Eventually we bought a small truck to pick up the wool and a forklift to save our backs. “At the same time we were also running our shearing contracting business, which we started with about 10 staff and grew to over 50 in the busy summer season. We became the biggest shearing contractors in Northland, shearing farms from Maungaturoto to Cape Reinga. “Through shearing we had direct contact with farmers and found that many weren’t

happy with other wool companies so we decided to expand the business to include big farms as well. We ran both businesses for a couple of years but gave up the shearing so that we could concentrate on Carpie Wool Buyers.” In 2013 they opened a depot in Maungatapere at the old dairy factory and Vaughan’s brother Logan joined the team to manage it. They then purchased an unused packhouse on Mangakahia Rd and moved the business. “The huge building was perfect. Our focus is to provide Northland’s wool growers with an honest, reliable and professional service. We are a privately owned business so we need to do a good job if we want to make a living,” says Vaughan. “We are here for the long haul, we have three sons and want this business to be an option for them when they are older.”

Agrimin launch new ‘Waterproof’ Copper bolus range for cattle Bolus specialists Agrimin, have announced the launch of a new range of copper boluses for cattle, sold in New Zealand under the 24.7 brand. Agrimin 24.7 Copper boluses have the advantage over capsules as they can be handled in rain without disintegrating. The boluses quickly breakdown in the rumen and release copper oxide needles which lodge in the ruminal folds and are then absorbed and stored in the liver. Copper deficiency is common in young cattle on pasture in New Zealand and is most often encountered in the winter when copper availability is low. Trials on the new Agrimin 24.7 boluses were conducted in cattle on a property with a history of copper deficiency in Northland. They were dosed and then grazed on reclaimed marsh that contained high levels of iron in the forage. The liver copper levels of the group were maintained at normal levels for at least 168 days. Towards the end of the trial, the blood copper levels of 70 per cent of the control group, which received no copper supplementation,
WOOL BUYERS
were below normal. This indicated that the liver copper reserves were exhausted. The untreated controls were then given a copper bolus in the spring to correct the deficiency. Within 28 days, blood copper levels were normal in all 10 animals. This shows the Agrimin copper boluses are effective in the treatment and prevention of copper deficiency in cattle. The new product range is available from your local veterinary clinic.

Reliable record with staying power by Andy Bryenton
The small SUV sector of the market has grown hugely in recent years, to the detriment, perhaps of that old favourite the big station wagon or roomy sedan. While many unfairly view contenders like BMW’s X3 and Toyota’s RAV4 as mere imitations of their ‘big brother’ stablemates — like the Range Rover and Land Cruiser — there’s no denying the versatility of a machine which can effortlessly switch from town sophistication to country ruggedness.

Doing their part to shed the preconception of smaller sport utilities as off-road lightweights is the Sportage, a mid-sized offering from the forward-thinking Korean auto maker Kia. Having evolved through several generations, the current model has proven not just competent as a ‘shopping cart’ and a vacation escape vehicle, but also as an all-round dependable motor. In fact, the Sportage has topped the prestigious JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study — for the third time. The sur vey, which is internationally recognised as a fair (if demanding) real world test of toughness tracks a sample of 3-year-old machines, talking to owners who put their daily drivers through the usual rote of work, play and chores. Any problems are reported, with points deducted from a maximum score for any breakdowns or failures. Kia are pleased to have received a stunning report card, with the Sportage coming out ahead of its contemporaries in terms of surviving the hard knocks

real life can throw at a vehicle — something it’s hard to simulate on the test track. “The JD Power VDS award reinforces Kia’s ongoing commitment to quality and dedication to craftsmanship in building world-class products,” says Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand. “The Sportage is a clear example of how far the entire Kia model range has progressed and this level of quality is tangible evidence of our long-term strategy to enhance the Kia ownership experience.”
Our pick for a test drive would have to be the two-litre LX Diesel AWD, which delivers plenty of space for the whole family, alongside the all-wheel-drive power to make short work of country driving conditions. It’s a measure of Kia’s belief in the durability of this vehicle — borne out by JD Power’s survey — that they offer a comprehensive five year warranty with every new Sportage, making it a wise choice for those who know what kind of curve balls the real world can throw at a Kiwi family’s set of wheels.

Dairy farmers says Kubota M135GX is a big step up
Auckland farm manager Luke Hughes had no experience with Kubota prior to 2009 when he bought a M125X. He soon realised it was a great tractor and in 2012 the farm purchased New Zealand’s first M135GX. “After running the M125X I was keen to get another Kubota,” said Luke. “We went to the Kubota Roadshow at Norwood Farm Machinery Centre in Pukekohe and we saw the then new, M135GX tractor.” The next week he had an opportunity to have a demonstration of the M135GX and thought it was great. “I like the front suspension, it is so smooth in the paddock. The cab gives you a 360° view from the inside without the side pillars on the doors, and the lighting is much better. It also has a smoother engine with more torque and it is like a completely different tractor to the M125X,” he says. “Kubota has stepped it up and upgraded everything, the power is awesome. It doesn’t struggle with the manure spreader and it does everything we want it to do.” He uses the M135GX for general farm work, maize, feeding out, and manure spreading.

Ready to take on the world by Andy Bryenton
Ford’s world car philosophy has seen a range of important milestones for the brand, with a cabinet full of awards garnered by the likes of the peppy Fiesta ST, the dominant Ranger utility and the world’s best-selling car, the Ford Focus. But it’s no overstatement to say that the all new 2015 Mondeo is perhaps the most important of them all — Ford’s flagship medium-sized car which challenges for supremacy in a tough sector of the market. Looking at the latest Mondeo, it’s clear that this is a departure from the relatively conservative lines of previous generations. Long, low and athletic, with a bold chrome grille and muscle-car styling accenting the bonnet, the new Mondeo wears its European design origins with pride. Gone is the image of the sensible and practical fleet car, replaced by a machine with more presence, even standing still. Attention to detail makes all the difference, with even the door handles, the chromed strip surrounding the windows and the underlit wing mirrors speaking volumes about the amount of thought Ford designers have lavished on their new creation. It’s the same inside, with a racinginspired twin dial cluster offsetting a big 8-inch touch-screen control unit in the centre console. And while comfort is the key to the interior of the Mondeo — including voice control for everything from the interior temperature to your choice of music — it’s the improved ride, handling and power of this car which set it apart from others in its class. At the heart of the Mondeo’s nicely balanced performance is the combination of a new electrically assisted steering system and the 2.0 litre Ecoboost engine, which puts together independent variable valve timing, turbocharging and direct fuel injection to deliver more power from less gas — and from a smaller, lighter
powerplant. It all comes together to create a car which seems built to devour long distances, its advanced systems working behind the scenes to smooth out the bumps, cancel out noise and create the kind of in-cabin environment which was once the preserve of luxury GT models. Many Ford fans have worried that the end of the Falcon XR6 would leave a gap in the Blue Oval’s stable for a long-range cruiser roomy enough for family comfort. This long-awaited replacement to one of their most successful cars proves that such a gap will not exist — and that a sensible choice for fuel economy and practicality can still look and feel like a real drivers’ car.

“It’s a significant milestone for sustainability in the primary sector so we are celebrating by giving away a new Suzuki farm bike,” says Agrecovery Foundation chair Adrienne Wilcock, a dairy farmer from Matamata who represents Dairy NZ on the foundation. “At the end of the day there is another way to deal with waste, and recycling is the way to go. It’s about reducing our waste and recycling what we can and moving with the times.” In the ‘Kick start your winter clean up’ programme, anyone who recycles with Agrecovery before the end of June will go into the draw to win a Suzuki DR200 Trojan — RRP $5,995 — a popular model, ideal for most rural applications. The programme started in 2007, offering farmers and growers free recycling of plastic containers from 12 participating brand owners at 25 collection points. It now has over 60 brand owners of agrichemical, dairy hygiene and animal health products financially supporting the programme. There are more than 70 permanent collection points throughout the country and the number of farmers and growers recycling with Agrecovery is growing significantly each year. “In year one we collected 32,850 kilograms and now, in year eight, we expect to reach 230,000 kilograms,
taking us well past one million kilograms overall,” she said. “Laid end to end, one million kilograms of containers would stretch approximately 325 kilometres or the entire length of the Clutha River, New Zealand’s second longest river.” The recycled containers are sent to Astron Plastics in Auckland for processing into safe end uses, such as underground electrical cable cover. “Through recycling with Agrecovery, farmers and growers have avoided using the equivalent of 8,500 cubic metres of farm dumps, or unnecessarily polluting the air and land by burning the Agrecovery Foundation chair Adrienne Wilcock plastic,” says Mrs Wilcock. “Instead, using this volume of recycled an Agrecovery container site or event plastic compared to new plastic has before the end of June. Containers must be empty, free an energy saving equivalent to 1.875 million litres of petrol. That is a massive from chemical residue and dirt inside environmental benefit whichever way you and out, with the label left on for look at it.” brand identification. To ‘Kick start your winter clean up’ See www.agrecover y.co.nz for with Agrecovery and be in to win, simply details of sites and events and our 62 take the triple rinsed containers to participating brand owners.

Rotagen Combo and Vetsan Super Concentrate
northernfarming.co.nz NEED EXTRA ROOMS?
A programme of preventative treatment with Rotagen Combo, the natural calf scour product, is a good option for protecting valuable replacement heifer calves which may be exposed to a viral or bacterial infection resulting in infectious scours. Rotagen Combo is part of an economical rearing strategy to protect calves and help them perform at their best over their lifetime. It is a registered animal remedy unique in New Zealand. Similar products are widely used overseas as growth promotants in calves and piglets with very good results. It is made from the dried egg yolk from hens that have been vaccinated with specific antigens. The hyper immune status of these hens achieve results in very high levels of antibodies in the yolk of the eggs, which provide a passive immunity to specific infection in the gut of the calf. The main cause of neonatal calf scours is rotavirus, a viral disease picked up from carrier cows following calving. A simple programme of treating calves at birth with a preventative drench of Rotagen Combo once a day for five days will help prevent clinical cases of rotavirus. The key to a successful regime is treating all the heifer replacement calves and any others being kept. The other important aspect of infectious scour control is to reduce the environmental contamination of viruses that may be in the environment.

SECRET N E D R A G
BY AYLA MILLER
NINETEEN YEARS AGO, JOSEPH AND BERNICE BORMANS WANTED TO LEAVE THE FAST PACED LIFE IN AUCKLAND. ON DISCOVERING A SIX-AND-A-HALF HECTARE PROPERTY NESTLED AMONGST ROWS OF MATURE TREES IN THE KAIPARA, THEY DECIDED TO MOVE TO GREENER PASTURES.
A
s Mr Bormans originally hails from the Netherlands, the couple called their new property Berg en Dal. The appropriately named section translates to ‘mountain and valley’. With his farming background and love

of plants, it was only natural he should own some land. “It started as paddocks and a house, with a few border trees,” says Mr Bormans. “I was known for having a beautiful garden in Auckland. We really had one foot in the city and one in the country.” The section is now made up of hundreds of mature trees and carefully cultivated gardens with the occasional fruit tree thrown into the mix. “I didn’t have a plan, I just planted by feel. I could see the possibilities and thought the property would lend itself well with a little work. I did it for the scenic value.” Mr Bormans said of his achievements. Ten years later the result of his tireless handiwork is a perfectly manicured garden surrounding his large brick and cedar home. “The pathways were never planned. I just knew what I wanted and it all worked out. There was no master plan, it was a gradual process.
Enclose your patio/deck area with our roll up curtains Extend the use of your outdoor areas, make summer last longer & spring arrive earlier
“I organised truckloads of rocks to go along the pathways and planted box hedges. “My friends and family admire it a lot. But not many of them were prepared to help with the work.” Out of all his accomplishments he is most proud of the overall establishment which includes palms, shrubs, trees and flowers but says his main interest are the rose gardens. “There are also 70 Australian Flame trees which I grew from seeds collected from a tree in front of the district council building in Whangarei,” he says. Now Joseph and Bernice have 13 beef animals on their section and say the majority of the work is simply maintenance and replacing the odd tree. “It is my hobby and it keeps me fit and busy and what I do is a continuous upgrade. A garden never stands still.” Mr Bormans says his creative days are now behind him. “The garden is not expanding.” As with most things worth doing, his project was not void of obstacles. Not long after their arrival to the property, the existing dam began to cause trouble.
JOSEPH BORMANS KNEW WHAT HE WANTED FROM HIS GARDENS AND IT HAS ALL WORKED OUT “The side of the dam began to slip so I planted trees to hold the soil in place and we haven’t had a problem since. I’ve incorporated it into the surroundings and it is more like a pond now.” The garden is made up of a series of sections with mixtures of flowers and shrubs. The surrounds become increasingly park-like as they go from east to west. Completely hidden from the road, the gardens and grounds are certainly a well kept secret.
