Recent announcements from the Rural GP Network stated: “The New Zealand Rural General Practice Network (the Network) is appalled that rural communities have been ‘left in the wilderness’ by the Pae Ora Health Futures bill, which was recommended by the select committee to parliament for a second reading today.” In its oral submission to the Pae Ora Healthy Futures bill select committee in January, the Network made a call for rural communities to be identified as a priority population group alongside Māori, Pacific People and the Disabled, who are already recognised.

The Network argued that if the bill doesn’t highlight a focus on rural communities, and holds government agencies accountable for rural health outcomes, then the health inequities faced by rural New Zealanders will not improve. There is good reason to be concerned with hidden agendas for rural health, with the minister receiving briefings in last year’s budget that talked about cutting costs by reducing specialist services at provincial hospitals. It would not be good for rural Northland, where we must support and enhance our hard-working rural health workforce.

Ahuwhenua competition back

MAY 2022

The 2022 Ahuwhenua Trophy competition to select the top Māori sheep and beef farm is back on track after being postponed due to Covid-19 risk. “With Covid restrictions now being progressively lifted, it was decided that it is safe to resume the judging process,” says Ahuwhenua Trophy chair, Nukuhia Hadfield. Judging of the entrants in the competition resumes in May, as well as the judging for the Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award, which is run in conjunction with the senior Ahuwhenua Trophy event. “Entrants and sponsors have all been consulted, and they are happy with this decision. The only change to the programme is the cancellation of the announcement of finalists at a function at parliament. “We will be announcing the finalists once the first-round judging process is complete. People will have a chance to meet this year’s finalists at their respective field days in August and September. “These events have always proved popular and are an excellent way of showcasing the achievements of our finalists.

COUNTRY ROCK BAY OF ISLANDS

The new amended dates for the field days are Field Day 1 — Thursday, August 25; Field Day 2 — Thursday, September 1 and Field Day 3 — Thursday, September 8. “The awards dinner will be held on Friday, October 21, at the Pettigrew Green Arena in Hawke’s Bay. “2022 has been a very challenging year for many Māori Sheep and Beef farmers — especially those on the east coast of the North Island. “The heavy rains in March had a catastrophic effect on some Māori farms — akin to the devastating Cyclone Bola in 1988. The torrential rain caused massive slips on many farms destroying fences, tracks and other infrastructure. “Stock has also been lost or affected by the storms. It will take considerable time and effort to restore these farms to their former state. “Despite the setbacks, the prospects are good for another excellent Ahuwhenua Trophy competition. The Ahuwhenua Trophy has always been a highlight of the year for the agri sector and the 2022 competition will be no exception.”

INTERNATIONAL MOVE

SUCCESS

Soenke and Antje Paarmann moved from Germany to become dairy farmers and pursue their love of working on the land and caring for the animals in their lives.

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

“Soenke and I enjoy working outdoors and with animals and saw opportunities in New Zealand that we wouldn’t have had in Germany. Neither of us had farming in our family, but Soenke grew up in a farming village, and my family stayed on a farm and helped during school holidays. “In Germany, you can’t just say I am going to be a farmer — you have to complete a farming education. I trained for two years, and Soenke studied for three years. You work on different farms each year to learn. “We gained our university diplomas and had individual work experience, which allowed us to come to New Zealand to see different farming systems. We didn’t know each other then. We met later on a crop farming holiday job to earn extra money in Germany.

Soenke and Antje Paarmann both secured diplomas in farming through study in Germany to become dairy farmers

“That is an opportunity for students during the 10 week holiday period — it is like fruit picking here. “When we came to New Zealand, walking through our own herd in our first sharemilking position was a great moment.

“We now 50/50 sharemilk 450 cows on Scott Meacham and Paula Brocklehurst’s 186ha Okaihau property. We are proud we moved jobs without borrowing extra money from the bank to increase our herd size by 140 cows after three tough years.

Fancy something a little smaller? Or about the same? A stunning range of brand-new villas and spacious two-bedroom cottages are pre-selling now at our first Northland village, Summerset Mount Denby.* Once complete, the village will also have a range of cosy and convenient serviced apartments to choose from. T

he Paarmanns were named the 2022 Northland Share Farmers of the Year at the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards. “We entered the dairy industry in 2006 with no farming background,” says Antje. “This was the third time we entered the competition. The benefits from the awards programme include making smart goals, forward-planning and using the judges’ feedback to improve weaknesses. It makes you sit down and work on your business instead of in your business. “We both hold a degree in agriculture from Germany and chose New Zealand farming after getting a taste of it during our OE. We have been sharemilking since 2009, with a five-year contract milking position during that time.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Soenke grew up in a farming village but had no childhood experience in the dairy industry

“Our cows are our biggest asset, and we look after them in the best possible way. We believe it would be great to show the general public what a fantastic industry it is and how we support each other to get ahead to achieve our goals. “During more challenging times, sharing the load is important, and we try to make jokes and laugh to keep spirits up. In tough times, such as drought, a lot of farmers are affected and knowing we are not the only ones going through the issues helps. “We love working outdoors together — that was a big thing for us. I enjoy working with the animals, while Soenke really likes the pasture management. The farm we

are on is still 90 per cent ryegrass with a bit of kikuyu creeping in. “We are doing a chicory crop in summer and adding new grasses to mix and mingle a bit. We are under sowing to improve the pasture with hybrid ryegrass while adjusting lengths according to time of year and feed budget. We also use hay and silage when necessary. “When we came here, we started with a new owner of the property who hadn’t farmed before. It was nice starting from scratch together. Being new to the region, we learned by trial and error to find what works.” The Paarman’s future farming goals include farm ownership.

Soenke is passionate about caring for his animals and enjoys working on pasture management

“We are animal people and believe in looking after them well, and in return, they look after us. “We aim to achieve this either through buying a smaller farm on our own or through equity partnership in a larger property. We are not quite there and appreciate the experience we are gaining on this farm. “We are looking for a bigger 50/50 sharemilking job with 800–900 cows but would also be interested in an equity

partnership with 400–500 cows or a farm we can lease to buy. “We have been lucky to have had some great mentors over the years here. We have taken the things we like from every job and implemented them. “We love New Zealand and enjoy spending time with our three children Janna, Thore and Henner. We try to go back to visit our friends and family in Germany regularly and are looking forward to our next trip once border restrictions allow.”

Northland Rescue Helicopter senior pilot Lance Donnelly finished his schooling years at Kaitaia college in 1979 before following in his dad’s footsteps as a rescue chopper pilot.

“M

y dad Max owned the first Northland Rescue Helicopter back in 1989,”

says Lance. “I left home at 16 years old to become an airforce aircraft engineer. I worked all over New Zealand for eight years at places including Hobsonville, Blenheim and Wigram. “I started to learn to fly in 1987 because I wanted a change, but the air force wouldn’t take me on as a pilot, so I had private lessons through North Shore Helicopters. “You need to understand how the choppers work, including technical aircraft knowledge, meteorology and navigation. “I gained my pilot’s licence and worked as a co-pilot with the Marine pilot transfer operation in Wellington. In 1989 I moved and flew with Westpac Rescue Choppers at Mechanics Bay

in Auckland in the helicopter my dad operated. “Dad and I worked together for 18 months. In 1990 he started the Northland Emergency Services Trust Rescue Helicopter in Whangārei with his Bell Jet Ranger helicopter. “I flew part-time out of Whangārei for a year with the rescue chopper before moving to work in a peacekeeping role in the Solomon Islands for the Australian Federal Police. I then worked in Papua New Guinea for the oil and gas industry before coming home in 2020.” Lance says flying helicopters is one career that you need to have a passion for. “People sometimes fly for two or three years and realise it is not their thing. The pilots who have been around for a while find it challenging and versatile. We can do a lot of things with the machines we fly.

NORTHERN FARMING LIFESTYLES

Lance Donnelly began his career as an aircraft engineer in the air force before eventually becoming one of the Northland Rescue Helicopter pilots

“We were on night shift, and the air desk, which tasks rescue helicopters throughout New Zealand, advised there was a request from the Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington. “It suggested the emergency beacon for the vessel had been activated. The Enchanter hadn’t made contact, and we had the mission to do the beacon search to find it. “Enchanter had been returning to Mangōnui from a fishing trip to the Three Kings Islands. “We reconfigured the chopper with the winch equipment because of the possibility of people in distress. “I had our winch-operator Paul, copilot Alex and rescue swimmer Josh on board. We flew to Kaitāia under instrument flight rules due to the bad weather conditions while flying in the cloud.”

Lance refuelled the chopper at Kaitāia Hospital and proceeded to North Cape, arriving at the scene at approximately 11.30pm. “We used night-vision goggles at the scene and tried to ascertain if any boats were available to help, but there were none. We then elected to do a nighttime winch to recover three survivors we located on top of the wreckage.” The three people were taken to nearby Te Pua Reserve, on the shores of the Pārengarenga Harbour. “We returned to the search area and located two more survivors on the upturned hull. We needed to refuel, so they were taken to Kaitāia Hospital, where we refuelled at 1.30am. “Initially, we felt great as we had rescued five of the 10 people on board the boat, and we thought we could find more survivors. Unfortunately, we couldn’t.

MAY 2022

Lance says the Northland Rescue Helicopter is one of the most cohesive operations he has worked with

“It is a very disappointing experience when you can’t help everyone at a scene. It was good for us to know another rescue helicopter was proceeding to the area to help us search for the other passengers on the fishing charter. “The teams were awesome working together to get the best outcome. It really was a very sad time for all involved, including the family and friends of the people on the boat. “The training we have is hugely important. We have to have confidence in each other with every mission, small or large. We couldn’t do the job otherwise, and this mission was incredibly large.” Lance says he has worked with several rescue chopper operations during the years. “The Northland Rescue Helicopter has flown well over 22,000 missions since 1988, and remains one of the busiest air ambulance services in the country.”

Last year, the call-out breakdown was 19 per cent accidents, 43 per cent medical, 20 per cent hospital transfers, two per cent other types of incidents and 16 per cent search and rescue operations. “It has long been said that you just never know when you, your family or colleagues may need the help of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. “The Northland Rescue Helicopter is one of the most cohesive operations that I have ever worked with. The crews have accomplished thousands of successful missions. Every mission has to be a team effort, and we have a brilliant team. “During my downtime, I enjoy duck hunting and deer stalking and am always looking for good spots. I like going out on people’s farms and into the bush, where I can enjoy nature as I do my thing. It is one of the ways I get to relax.”

Mrs Isey Cross was born Isabella Munn at her family homestead in Kāretu, Northland, on April 3 1919, and celebrated turning 103 years old with friends and family on Easter Weekend.

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

PART TWO

“T

his was a working dairy farm, and my husband Charles and I had a life that was all about farming,” says Isey. “This was the main road to Opua for horse and cart, and there were seven houses nearby when we moved here. “Buck Shelford’s grandparents lived in one house. It was moved and is now the Kawakawa Bowling Club. “We had a bail for two cows with a little machine and a herd of 28 milking cows. We also farmed large white pigs and had 15 breeding sows and five boars. “We swapped pork and beef for mutton with the McIntyres up the road, so we always had a mix of meat. We eventually got rid of the dairy and farmed pigs and dry stock before

removing the pigs and focussing on dry stock. “Charles did the farm, and I took care of the family. I always tell girls to keep your house clean and make good meals. For me, being happy was cooking for my family and friends, keeping my house tidy and not moaning. “Every Sunday, I would have a roast with all the trimmings and either bread pudding, apple pie or rice pudding for dessert. My favourite meals are roast pork with apple sauce or roast mutton with mint sauce. I just use salt to season my meat. “There were orange trees, plums and Golden Queen peaches on the farm. Charles would take James and lift him up in the bucket on the tractor to pick the fruit high up in the trees.

“I would bottle the fruit and pick blackberries to make blackberry jelly and fruit jams to stock the pantry. Farming has changed a lot since then — so have vehicles and technology. “I had a horse, then a Vanguard car, a blue Vauxhall before a blue Victa and then Charles brought me a B cerise pink 1972 Holden Premier V8. “There were only two B cerise colour cars that Morgan Motors in Kaikohe brought in as he was able to choose the colours. He got one for them, and one for us, and we are going to restore mine. “Now I drive with Jamie in his Mitsubishi GTO we call Black X. We often visit my son Digger nearby and stay with my daughter Lorraine in Mangawhai. I enjoy those trips.

Isey and her son James arrived at her 103rd birthday celebrations in the Excalibur series III 1977 Sports roadster convertible

“Charles was always a fisherman as he came from the coast, and I got involved in game fishing, and it is still my biggest enjoyment.

“I caught 10 marlin over the years and usually landed my fish in about 20 minutes. Sometimes something disturbs them, and that’s when they get aggro, but I always got my catch. “We used to release them until we realised someone else would catch them, so we kept any under 90kg. We paid someone to smoke what we kept, and I cooked it in white sauce. “I still catch up with my fishing buddy Ritchie and go out on his boat.

“I never met anyone famous, but I won trips to Hawaii and Fiji in fishing competitions. When I was in Fiji, John Rowles was performing and asked if there were any Kiwis there. “My friend raised my hand and he got me on stage in my red dress and sang Cheryl Moana Maree. “Years later, Jamie was at the CBS office in Parnell where he had a record label and was shocked to see a photo of me on the wall with John. The CBS

Isey’s husband Charles, milking the family cows in the original cowshed many years ago

lady was in Fiji at the time and snapped the photo. “I loved gardening, my favourite flowers to grow were roses, and I knew every name of them. “I have a good family, and now Jamie and Gavin look after me, and I spend my days doing word search puzzles, listening to music and relaxing, looking out the window from my chair and seeing who is going up the road. “I like a nip of Jim Beam on special occasions, and although I enjoyed my

birthday, it was just another day. I made people sing for their cake, and it was lovely to have my great-grandson Justice take the time to come and celebrate with me. “Our movie James and Isey is good. Florian and James had to do a good job. They were told what to do, and I got my way in the end. It was all about me. “I ran a tight ship and we had a good, happy life. Always remember to make the most of each day and don’t worry, be happy.”

Revamped trail open

MAY 2022

A picturesque three-kilometre section of the Te Araroa length-of-New Zealand trail at Kerikeri has been upgraded and is now open for all walkers to enjoy. Te Araroa Northland trustee Mark Williams says although it is only a small part of the 3,000km overall trail, the upgraded Upper Kerikeri River Track is already proving very popular with walkers. Mr Williams says its volunteers are grateful to Northland Regional Council, which used about $100,000 of Provincial Growth Fund funding for kauri protection work to upgrade the unformed track. “It is money well spent. There has been positive feedback from the many members of the public who use the track,” he says. “The Upper Kerikeri River Track was originally championed by Te Araroa founder Geoff Chapple as a route into Kerikeri as part of his epic vision for a length of New Zealand walk. It was one of the first developed. “The upper track, on public reserve, provides an extension to the wellestablished Lower Kerikeri River Track, which is on Department of Conservation land. The new track runs along a reserve beside the river from the Kerikeri Falls car park to the State Highway 10 car park and a coffee cart. “The work was done by Johnson Contractors, with design and engineering support from Frame Group. It includes small bridges, kissing gates and aggregate surfacing. “The quality of work and attention to detail of the small bridges and gates is for all to see and admire.”

agencies and local government are working together on these projects, and we are proud to work alongside communities and hapū and the regional staff of Biosecurity New Zealand — Tiakina Kauri, DOC and MBIE. “The Far North District Council has also agreed to maintain the Upper Kerikeri River Track where kikuyu, gorse, paspalum and wattle are among the challenges, while TANT is seeking ways to resource ongoing maintenance of the others.”

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

People gathered at the official opening of an upgraded section of the Te Araroa Trail at Kerikeri recently

The agencies involved were welcomed during a recent opening ceremony, and a blessing was given by Kipa Munro, chairperson of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia Charitable Trust. Kipa explained the values and importance of the area both to iwi and the wider community. “Three other Te Araroa tracks are under construction nearby, and all the Kerikeri sections will officially open in the lead up

to the Te Araroa 2022 walking season, which begins in spring,” says NRC’s Biosecurity and Biodiversity Working Party chair Jack Craw. “Kauri protection work is happening across Northland by way of trail upgrades, pest control, fencing, soil sampling, and kauri sanctuaries like the one Ngāti Rēhia is developing. “All this work is aimed at safeguarding our national taonga; kauri. ADVERTORIAL

Ensuring tree health heading into winter is vital for those trees already battling with Phytophthora root rot (PRR). Monitor your tree health using the Ciba-Geigy scale and be proactive in managing PRR using a holistic chemical and cultural management tools approach. Current crop load, nutrient deficiencies, environmental stresses and significant demand on reserves for flower development and fruit maturing can cause a tree to be more disease susceptible. It could trigger a noticeable decline during winter as the roots battle against the high pressure of Phytophthora in the coming wet months. Control should not only be chemical providing transitory protection but cultural too, creating healthier roots more resilient to PRR and a soil environment where PRR is suppressed. Autumn is the time to act. Increasing organic matter with the addition of mulches and composts will support higher numbers of fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes. You can also drench the soil with products that will activate and stimulate these populations of beneficial soil microbes. Soils containing higher percentages of microorganisms will enhance the biological suppression of the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi. As woody mulch decomposes, antagonistic soil fungi such as Trichoderma spp build up. These fungi protect plants by killing pathogens like Pc, inducing resistance

against plant pathogens, imparting abiotic stress tolerance, improving plant growth and vigour, and nutrient uptake. If using chemical control, remember to time your application. Best results are achieved when applied after the summer flush has hardened off and autumn root flush is active. Do not do any phosphonate application during dry weather or when the trees are waterstressed. Wait for good soil moisture levels or irrigate well before application for better uptake. Treatments are always more effective when applied during periods of active sap flow. If any trees earmarked for phosphonate application are to be pruned, wait three to four weeks before pruning to allow the chemical to be drawn up by the leaves and translocated to the roots. For the injecting method, injection sites should be spread evenly around the tree, as the chemical does not move laterally around the tree and only moves to the leaves directly above the injection site then down to the roots below them. Foliar spray can be used instead of injecting if the trees have sufficient canopy to take up the application. Monitor your root phosphite concentrations by taking root samples, 25–40ppm is considered the threshold of effectiveness; aim for 40ppm for better persistence.

The immune system (Part two)

by John Arts

Let’s say a virus has penetrated your Non-Specific immune defences, see the last edition, and starts to infect cells. Sitting, waiting for such an attack is your specific immune system that can create a devastating attack against the virus. However, this part of your immune system has a significant shortcoming. Initially, it does not recognise the attacker and needs to be ‘trained’ to identify and attack the virus. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune B cells that bind to an invader marking it for destruction by T cells. Natural immunity is based on the immune system’s ability (activated B cells) to produce antibodies that will both fight a current infection and a return of the same pathogen. Artificial immunity is from vaccines that trigger B cells to make antibodies to provoke a rapid T cell response against a first infection against a virus. It means your immune system is already primed, waiting for exposure and can launch a much faster, more aggressive response against the virus. In the last edition, we saw that our Non-Specific immunity is greatly

influenced by nutrients. The same is true for our Specific immunity. Vitamin D acts like a master commander of your immune defences. Dr Anthony Fauci, who leads the US health Covid response recommends supplementing with 4,000IU of vitamin D daily to help immune responses. It is also important to make sure you have optimal levels of antioxidants, vitamins and trace minerals, especially selenium and zinc. These help prevent damage from both the infection and the immune responses. Many of these are antioxidants that protect the immune system and help prevent unwanted inflammation. Minerals such as selenium and zinc are very important. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING LOCAL

The bureaucrats in Wellington are at it again with another slice of mindless legislation heading New Zealand’s way; legislation that could force primary producers to down tools and sell their land to foreign forestry outfits. Believe me, this is already happening big time throughout the country with the government allowing foreign ownership to reign supreme, while once productive and beautiful farmland disappears forever to help foreign countries with their carbon credits. Crazy? Yes, and this after we all thought the threatened introduction of Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) in the north was bad enough. Well, wait until you get your head around this one. Farmers and their families are human, and they drink water despite what policy people in the Ministry of the Environment appear to think. These humans don’t go around poisoning themselves or anyone else associated with them, their waterways, their land or their produce. The unintended consequences, or should I say the intended consequences of proposed changes to the National Environmental Standards for Freshwater (NES-F), which regulates activities that pose risks to the health of freshwater and freshwater ecosystems, will impact all rural dwellers — have no doubt. If the Ministry for the Environment gets its way, you will see blanket exclusion zones that restrict activities around drinking water sources, whether it constitutes a risk or not. You will highly likely need resource consent to replace a post in a fence near

Colin Hannah — Federated Farmers Northland president

a waterway, and you would need consent to cultivate your paddock for maize. Both are basic, fundamental and common sense farming operations. You, the farmer, will need consent to apply agrichemicals within restricted ‘Zone 2’, at the cost of $10,000 to $30,000 for each consent. Who can afford that, and why should you have to? The weeds in the riparian margins are already clapping their hands as these regions become an overgrown wilderness. Great for spreading noxious weeds near and far with the help of the waterways we are no longer able to manage in a practical and sustainable manner.

Under the newly proposed protection zones, it is possible your farm could be excluded from fundamental farming operations. You should be very, very concerned because from what I have read so far, there will hardly be a farmer in Northland who will escape the damage this looming draconian bureaucracy will do to us. Join Federated Farmers New Zealand’s Dr Paul le Miere online at 7pm, Thursday, May 12 to understand what we are doing in the NES — drinking water space and likely the impact on you. Keep an eye on the events section of fedfarm.org.nz for the Zoom link.

Scholarship winners announced

Three New Zealand Young Farmers’ members have been given a helping hand to further their education through the organisation’s three exclusive scholarships. Lincoln University post graduate student Jeremy Kilgour and aspiring Massey University veterinarian Nerida Bateup have been awarded the NZYF World Congress Charitable Trust Scholarship, receiving $1,500 cash in hand each. Lincoln University student Georgia Moody is the first recipient of the brand new NZYF Future Me Scholarship, receiving $1,500 for planned professional development. NZYF Board chair Kent Weir said he is very pleased NZYF is able to provide these opportunities for members to develop their education and skillsets. “I would like to say a big congratulations to the three scholarship recipients, as well as to all those who applied. “Jeremy has been a valued member of NZYF and has competed in contests, volunteered with events. He also held multiple leadership positions within the Lincoln University Young Farmers Club, most recently as chair. “For Nerida, it is extremely rewarding to see her involvement with the organisation which started with AgriKids in 2016. She has since moved through the different tiers of NZYF with FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year and Teen Ag before joining Massey University Young Farmers. She is a great asset to have in our organisation. “Georgia started as a member of her Fielding High School Teen Ag Club and competing before joining Lincoln University Young Farmers. Currently junior vice chair, I am excited to see where she will go within the organisation.

“It feels great to be able to give back to our members, who have given us so much.” Nerida grew up in the Huntly/Te Kauwhata area on a dairy farm which sparked her passion for agriculture and animals. The first year Massey University student has goals to complete her degree and become a Registered Veterinary Surgeon to practise as a large and mixed practice Vet. “From working on the family farm I know first-hand how important stock health and optimising production is,” she says. “Vets are a crucial part to the New Zealand agriculture sector, not only do they treat sick animals they play a huge rule working with farmers to keep the stock healthy to produce high quality dairy and meat products. By becoming a vet, I will be able to give back to my rural community that is the backbone of our county.” Jeremy will use the scholarship money for the course fees for his Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours degree, finishing this year. His main interest is animal nutrition — the focus of his Honour’s project. “My project looks at the suitability of Fodder Beet as a wintering diet in terms of minerals, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. It also looks at other characteristics of Fodder Beet such as dry matter percentage, leaf to bulb ratio, proportion of bulb below the soil line, NDF and other minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sulphur.”

ATTENTION FARMERS

Nerida Bateup — one of the New Zealand Young Farmer World Congress Charitable Trust Scholarship receivers

Georgia, a second year Lincoln University Bachelor of Agricultural Science student has a passion for improving sustainability and balancing farming practices. “This qualification will benefit the rural community as one of my strengths is knowledge transfer,” she says. “I would also encourage more youth to get involved and study/work in the primary industries therefore benefitting the rural community as a whole.”

When steam replaced muscle power

In modern times, we can call on excavators, cranes and heavy machinery to tackle those jobs too hefty for human muscle alone, but in the early history of New Zealand, the advent of the steam shovel was a game-changer. As a nation built on natural resource management, Shire horses and bullocks provided the bulk of heavy power in those early times. That changed when two very different companies developed steampowered diggers and draglines in the late 1800s. Joseph Ruston was a young, ambitious steam engineer in Lincolnshire, England,

back in 1857. Inspired by the Victorianera steam revolution, he had big ideas to match those of engineering titans of the time. The niche he wanted to explore was digging and mining. Ruston knew that Isambard Brunel, a famous railway builder, needed a better way to dig cuttings through which to run rails. Joining an existing firm, Ruston tried to perfect his idea, but the breakthrough came with a design by inventor James Dumbar. In 1874 the Dunbar-Ruston steam navvy was unveiled, taking its name from the navvies or inland navigators, the workmen who dug massive railway earthworks by hand. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Bucyrus steam engine company had the opposite problem. Their one and a half acre factory site in Ohio was too small, but there was no way to build out. They decided to make a move to the largely undeveloped outskirts of Milwaulkee, where they could set up shop making bigger, more powerful steam shovels and draglines. New Zealand mines, earthworks and railways snapped up the produce of both companies, seeing the benefits of tireless mechanical power. Draglines, those huge, bucket-and-winch dredges with booms exceeding 20 metres, were used to tame

swampland and make it ready for farming. Coal mines and quarries employed Bucyrus and Ruston steam shovels, like the popular Ruston number 20, of which 200 were built. Supplied ‘naked’, these machines were an arm, a boiler, winch gear and a base that was sometimes fitted to railway wheels. Operators built corrugated iron and wooden structures to protect the

steam plant from the elements, and photos from the turn of last the century show sooty but warm workers keeping out of the weather near the hot boiler. A pot of tea was never far from the firebox. Now a historical curiosity, these two brands set the stage for the excavators and heavy equipment we can call on today — many survive in museums and collections.

Growing great workplaces

Farmer Hamish Murray knows first-hand what it feels like to be short of the resources needed to create a great workplace. In 2014/2015, he and his family’s highcountry sheep and beef farm suffered from one of the toughest droughts. “My cup was empty, and I had nothing left to give. When I reached emotional breaking point, it was obvious that to be successful at leading others, I needed to look at myself first,” says Hamish. “Soft skills aren’t a typical priority onfarm, but they matter the most if you want to attract, train and retain the best team.” Hamish embarked on a series of coaching courses, mentoring and a Nuffield scholarship. Empowered by his new-found skills and knowledge, he then shared what he had learnt with his team. “I worked out what I can control or change and what I can’t. I learnt how to ask better and more open questions. We created a team, not a hierarchy. “Accessing some very practical and powerful resources, improved my wellbeing, grew our staff’s self-awareness, and made our family business a better place to work.” Hamish’s inspiring story is part of a new initiative sponsored by the Ministry for Primary Industries and delivered by the GrowingNZ/Primary Industry Capability Alliance to grow more great workplaces in the food and fibre sector.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with food and fibre sector organisations and the government, off the back of the Food and Fibre Skills Action Plan 2019–2022, which sets out actions to build the sector’s workforce. “The Great Workplaces project promotes the many people and initiatives already leading the way,” says PICA’s chief executive Dr Michelle Glogau. “It is a way to share their ideas and knowledge and inspire other employers, managers and business owners working in food and fibre.

“Personal stories and insights, leadership and coaching courses, staff training, and personality profiling, are just some of the resources that business owners and managers can access to strengthen and grow their workplace. “There are also case studies and stories about the many great workplaces in food and fibre to inspire and motivate employers, managers and business owners to implement changes in their workplace. “We’ve also pulled together trusted and relevant tools to improve employment

A skin cancer initiative that could improve the diagnosis of melanoma and help reduce New Zealand’s high mortality rates in rural areas is set to be expanded nationwide. According to latest figures, New Zealand males living in rural areas have higher skin cancer mortality rates than those in main urban areas. New Zealand also has the world’s highest death rate from skin cancer, with 2,700 new registrations annually and one Kiwi dying from this form of cancer every day. The initiative will upskill hundreds of Kiwi GPs in the use of specialised diagnostic technology. It could improve the early identification of the disease by almost a third. The dermoscope allows the lesion to be magnified and viewed under polarised light, helping to identify subtle changes in the mole. Kiwi doctor Franz Strydom of the Skin Cancer College Australasia says the organisation has a training and accreditation programme to ensure there is a consistent standard for all health care providers using the technology.

All Rural & Residential Fencing Conventional Fencing Sheep & Cattle Yards Post and Rails

“It is important that we identify skin cancer early as it provides a significantly improved prognosis for the patient,” he says. “If caught in the initial stages, we have the ability to treat it with a minor surgical procedure, at a fraction of the cost of treating metastasised cancers. “We need to ensure there are more consistent standards across the health sector when using a dermatoscope, so skin cancer patients have the best chance possible. “Kiwis living in rural areas are often disadvantaged as access to medical assistance can be limited. “Patients will visit their GP for regular scripts and check-ups, but a skin check should be a separate appointment, requiring more training on the part of the clinician and more time spent with the patient. “Along with specialised training in the use of the technology, those health care providers taking part in the accreditation programme should have access to colleagues to assist them with diagnosis. “Currently, many health care providers attend a short course on skin cancer, including basic training with a dermatoscope, but we know with proper training with the device, there can be a 49 per cent improvement in a doctor’s ability to diagnose a problematic lesion.

Kiwi doctor Franz Strydom of the Skin Cancer College Australasia

“Often, doctors work in isolation, particularly those in rural areas. The Skin Cancer College programme has created multiple platforms where clinicians can confer with other experts and seek a second opinion on any suspicious lesions they may find. “Identifying suspicious skin spots and moles is not always an exact science, but ensuring doctors have excellent qualifications and keeping their knowledge up-to-date improves patient outcomes. “Increasing the number of GPs who are well trained in diagnosing skin cancer and supporting them with adequate government funding will encourage Kiwis to get their skin checked.” Doctors who participate in the Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor programme must complete five exams and submit more than 50 clinical case studies for assessment.

Electrical safety essential

Federated Farmers Northland is teaming up with Northpower and Top Energy to help keep rural Northlanders safe around electricity. The companies are calling for farmers, rural contractors, horticulturalists and lifestylers to be more cautious when working around electrical assets. Federated Farmers Northland president Colin Hannah believes there are far too many unreported near misses with electricity, which could badly injure or kill rural landowners if they were to contact overhead power lines or underground electricity cables. “Accidents can happen so quickly and easily due to a moment of inattention or the old ‘she’ll be right attitude’,” he says. “We are encouraging Northlanders to do exactly what Northpower and Top Energy have been saying for years now — look up, look down, look around and keep yourself and your mates safe. Many rural properties have electricity service lines, which are the responsibility of the landowner for upkeep, to power sheds and buildings, and water pumps, so there can be a number of potential electrical dangers on a property. As part of the Northland Rural Support Trust, Mr Hannah says he has an additional drive to help with the wellbeing of rural Northlanders. He believes the Northpower/ Top Energy ‘Just think – Does it look right?’ electricity safety campaign is timely. Northpower Customer Experience manager Rachel Wansbone is pleased to

be partnering with Federated Farmers and Top Energy on the campaign. “A large part of our electricity network in Kaipara and Whangārei is rural, and it is important for us to be talking to people on the land about electrical safety. “Our electrical safety campaign underway with local newspapers, radio stations and on social media aims to raise awareness of the dangers of working around electrical assets, with the ultimate aim of reducing accidents.” Top Energy Network Operations manager Tony Smallman says, “it is important for rural Northlanders to understand the right and wrong things to do around electricity and electricity assets.

“For example, if you are working around electricity, if you think something is too close, it most likely is. Equally, there is a danger with underground cables, and too often, people are hitting cables with machinery through inattention or poor planning. “We want to lessen the risk of people being hurt or killed by electricity and encourage people to keep an eye out for others too.” The companies have guidance material on their websites about the legal requirements for working around electricity assets and encourage anyone with questions to contact them. For those wanting to excavate or dig, it is always recommended to get free copies of utility plans to make sure there are no underground services in the area.

TracMap makes for smarter farming The agricultural sector is the mainstay of the rural New Zealand economy, and any change in its structure is likely to have an impact on the running of farms. From July 1 2021, new regulations were introduced, placing strict limits on the application of synthetic nitrogen on grazed pastures. It has placed additional pressure on farmers to ensure that their fertiliser applications are accurately tracked and recorded so they can maximise pasture growth throughout the season without breaching the 190kg/Ha limit. This can be a delicate balancing act — budgeting nutrient applications across the farm. As a farmer, you need to ask yourself, how can you grow productivity and manage increasing fertiliser costs, all while remaining compliant with the new, stricter environmental regulations? The answer is New Zealand’s leading provider of GPS-based job management systems: TracMap. At TracMap, our systems guide farmers to take more corrective actions for the better utilisation of fertilisers, increased production and reduced costs by enabling better management resources and efficient processes, all while being compliant with regulations. TracMap systems fully integrate with most ‘industry standard’ spread and spray controllers and support sharing of data with third party applications such as FarmIQ, Hawkeye, MyBallance and Precision Farming giving your customers greater flexibility when booking fertiliser applications and collating seasonal reporting.

GPSit has been mapping the land you love since 2001. “Our company was built from humble beginnings in a small office on a kiwifruit orchard, with just one staff member and a single GPS unit,” says company founder Matt Flowerday. “GPSit has since grown into an established farm mapping company used by ag giants Zespri and Fonterra for over 20 years and 10 years, respectively. “We produce high-quality customised property maps, orchard designs and geospatial solutions for our clients. Our team of experts use the latest tools and technology to provide the best land mapping services New Zealand has to offer. “Coming from agricultural backgrounds, we know what is required to manage land efficiently. We know the only way to manage your farm effectively and consistently is with a GPSit farm map in front of you.”

A farm map is the foundation of your entire operation and is an investment that provides immediate and longlasting returns. “With accuracy, comes support to your daily decisions in the paddock from planning and recording to compliance, health and safety, benchmarking and much more. “An accurate map is also the foundation for building an effective Farm Environment Plan, a requirement for most New Zealand farms heading into 2025. Maps are used in farm environment plans to help visualise management systems and contamination risks on the farm before taking mitigation actions. “Slopes, soils, blocks, waterways and riparian areas are some of the key elements that may be required on your

A wage for waking

MAY 2022

by Amy Fifita

Before the popularity of alarm clocks, you could pay a knockerupper to rouse you out of bed and off to work in the morning. The legitimate profession was primarily popular in England and Ireland, but the idea minorly travelled across the globe. An extensive range of occupations, needing to be punctual for their jobs would use knocker-uppers. Initially, knocking on client doors changed and varied by person, using peashooters, sticks or telephone calls to wake clients. The original method changed because the sound woke up neighbouring houses that hadn’t paid for the service. Workers needed them because lateness could result in income loss or dismissal. Factory-based businesses required employees to be there at set times, or they could receive docked pay. It wasn’t restricted to shift work. Highly educated professionals such as doctors and lawyers would pay for the service. Knocker-uppers were known to stay awake all night or used some form of alarm to rouse themselves. Being a lowimpact job, the profession was taken up by police and the elderly and not restricted to gender or age. The era of knocker-uppers ended when alarm clocks became affordable, more reliable and accessible. However, there were accounts of the role still existing in England until the 1970s. In New York, the idea was adapted by a 23-year-old businesswoman of Service Please Incorporated, offering the human alarm clock service. She would wake

A 1927 New Zealand newspaper mentions a night-watchman who would wake guests at the boarding houses. Visitors would write their wake up time on slates for him to know when to summon them. It would be easy to presume that society did not have alarm clocks. However, the water alarm clock, sounding daily at dusk and dawn, was invented in 427 BC by the Greek philosopher Plato. It was followed by fellow Greek, Ctesibius, who designed a water alarm clock that could be set by the owner. In an age reliant on technology to wake us, would we have hired these respected workers to get us to work on time?

The wartime tractor ‘invasion’

When wartime machinery shortages struck and foreign trade was cut by the war at sea, a lend-lease deal with the United States delivered fresh ideas and equipment to New Zealand farms.

Tough and simple to maintain, many of the classic tractors sent during the second world war are still functional around New Zealand

One important change made by the lend-lease programme was the supply of considerable quantities of mechanical equipment for farms. For example, more than 7,000 farm tractors were supplied in the years 1943 to 1945 by US factories. Some idea of the significance of the lendlease deal can be gathered from the fact that, in 1940, there were only about 11,000 tractors on New Zealand farms. By the second world war’s end, there were close to double that number, with US models predominating. Tractors proliferated so quickly that the Transport (Farmer’s Tractor) Emergency Order of 1942 had to be rushed through parliament, making it unnecessary to pay registration for driving a tractor on the road. In fuel-rationed times, farmers often used their new tractors for everything from ploughing fields to mowing hay to driving goods to market. Some children of that era remember the tractor replacing the family car altogether. A classic tractor from the lend-lease era was the John Deere model A, which debuted in the US as a row crop tractor, but was also available in orchard and fixed-tread forms. Farmers in New Zealand were keen that this was the first Deere with rubber tyres as standard,

perfect for taking advantage of that emergency order. Typical of its type, it ran a five-litre all-fuel engine developing a maximum of 24-horsepower at the PTO. Its relatively light weight of 1,720kg made it excellent for traversing muddy fields. Its opposite number was the Farmall model A, another small, by modern standards, tractor from Louisville, Kentucky, that punched above its weight on Kiwi farms. The Farmall is still the classic tractor shape drawn by small children in primary school. Its 1.9-litre engine delivered more torque than people thought possible at the time from such a compact unit. Machines like these finally ushered out the steam and horse-drawn machinery era on New Zealand farms. It was an age that had lingered longer here than in the more industrialised northern hemisphere due to our relative isolation. The trade-off for our allies in wartime was increased food production, which went to feed the sailors, marines, soldiers and pilots of the Pacific theatre. After the end of hostilities, the extra efficiency tractors delivered was part of the farming boom that enriched rural New Zealand.

All that jazz

by Andy Bryenton

Honda’s latest electric hybrid vehicle comes with some new energy-saving tricks up its sleeve and a new tongue-twisting acronym to remember; e:HEV.

Complete Engine Rebuilds Supplier of all Engine Parts Complete Head Rebuilds Supplier of New Heads Cylinder Reboring & Honing Surfacing Alloy & Cast Heads MONDAY - FRIDAY: 8.00am - 4:30pm PH: 09 438 6655 80 Rewa Rewa Road, Whangarei, Northland, NZ

has learned about regenerative braking and kinetic energy recovery. At current prices, this could take you from Northland to Auckland for approximately $8, and that’s a bargain worth considering. Another bargain is the price in comparison to battery-only vehicles. The government will pay you just over $4,000 for choosing the Jazz e:HEV, and it’s only $35,000 brand new to begin with. That puts it on the radar of real Kiwis, who don’t have the budget of a Formula One team or a portfolio of

mansions. Everything else Honda could think of is included, and that, from a firm that makes jet planes and robots, is a lot of safety features, connectivity and toys. It even looks quite endearing, with an interesting two-tone interior. Although it’s a city hatchback and not a slick coupe, you can at least say it’s a hybrid from the stable of the NSX. If you’re in the market for a family car and really, honestly don’t need an SUV, then this could be the new front runner.

It might just be worth remembering this collection of letters, as the designation stands for a fresh look at the hybrid concept, as tried, tested and proven by Hondas that have gone before and as the ubiquitous Toyota Prius. Honda’s Jazz e:HEV luxe performs a similar juggling act to their CR-Z, perhaps the most fun to drive hybrid of the first generation. With a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a brace of electric motors; it can deliver a massive range without fear of battery drain, and the kick of instant torque. However, it goes about making that power and laying it down in a very different fashion to the CR-Z or the Insight, Honda’s other early hybrid effort. In the new Jazz, the petrol engine is most often employed to charge the batteries, with smooth electric power delivery predominating. It extends the range vastly over battery-only machines. Moreover, because the petrol motor is only driving a generator and not trying to accelerate an entire car along the tarmac — it’s superbly efficient. The upshot is that the Jazz e:HEV uses petrol, but only in the same way as a hummingbird sips nectar. Figures of 2.4 litres for every 100 kilometres are talked about in the promotional materials, as the little Jazz also applies everything Honda

On-street parking is set to become a thing of the past in Auckland, and many opine that where the supercity goes, so too will Whāngarei in the future and all of Northland thereafter. “We do have a predetermined agenda. Our predetermined agenda is to create easy journeys,” said Auckland Transport’s head of integrated network planning Andrew McGill, when challenged on plans to make Aucklanders bicycle. “We are not going to back down simply because somebody is not going to like it.” ‘Like it’ — they do not. The main opponents are shop, cafe and restaurant owners, who say that taking away parking will stop them from attracting customers. A quick look at how bigbox retail centres have overtaken main street shopping, everywhere that parking charges and wardens reign, shows their fears might be justified. Additionally, where will people from Kaipara park, when forced to visit municipal centres by the pull-out of medical and government services? Luckily, Japan has beaten us to it. In that nation, it’s illegal to buy a car you can’t park, and a garage costs almost as much as an apartment in Tokyo. Hence, an answer to both the problem of parking space and the issue of electric cars being

Mazda’s AZ-1 has gull-wing doors, a mid-engine layout and is only half the size of the Ferrari it looks like; could this be the solution to parking problems and fuel prices?

unaffordable for most average Kiwis — the Kei car. With massive tax incentives and the ability to park in a tiny footprint, these minuscule runabouts are everywhere in big Japanese cities. With a maximum engine size of 660cc, they sip fuel and rev up to 10,000 rpm like motorcycles and usually fit just two diminutive adults plus groceries. There have been sporty models, like the Honda Beat and the Autozam AZ-1, and boxy vans like the Nissan Carol and Toyota Pixis. All must fit into a space of 3.4 metres, close to two metres shorter than a Ford Falcon. They’d be easy to park, cheap to run and some come with bizarre names like the Daihatsu Naked, the Mitsubishi Lettuce and the Toppo Guppy. There’s only one problem with importing small, cheap-to-run, easy-topark little Kei cars for New Zealand. On many of our highways, you’d be able to lose an entire tiny vehicle in our supersized potholes. Oh, and if you’re above six feet tall, you might need to option a convertible.
