New season, new challenges… Well that’s the dairy industry. Welcome to spring. One of the challenges farmers seem to face a lot is staff. For a variety of reasons they can be difficult to get and to keep, leaving the farm owner to keep the farm running for sometimes many months. The result is stress, and fatigue which can lead to accidents and worse. What has been noticed is that in the absence of reliable staff, there is a trend toward upgrading the automation of dairy and herd management functions to reduce dependency on staff, reducing ongoing labour costs and more importantly increasing the efficiency of the overall system. In the milking parlour you could put in automated plant and vat washers so you don’t have to wait for the wash to finish, automatic drafting gates that uses EID tags to draft the herd or heat detection using Milfos activity collars to make mating management a breeze. Maybe auto teat spraying either in race or on bail (rotaries), these can be retro fitted to any brand of platform. In herringbones swingarms in the pit will keep the pit clear and easier to move around and help with cluster alignment. Milfos cup removers can save time by eliminating over milking and the related problems. There are many options from flow controlled to milk metering, to networked with herd management recording.

Fonterra is to celebrate its 10th birthday with seven fun family days held nationwide, including one in Northland and one in Auckland. Both events will be held on Labour Day, October 24. Tike Taane will headline a great line up of activities at Northland’s Barge Park while the Aucklanders ‘shout’ held in the Auckland Domain will feature artists Dave Dobbyn, Evermore, Stan Walker, Avalanche City and the Patea Maori Club. Enjoy the freebies or pack a picnic kick back, relax and enjoy great music, free ice creams (Tip Top’s famous ice creams, Fruju and Kapiti) while tucking into the giant sausage sizzle. Fonterra will also have two brand new choices on the day — CalciYum Milk Ice, and a new range of adult refreshments, Icebar. Watch (or join in) the Fonterra Games Zone. One of these six games is sure to get your blood pumping: The Anchor Milk Run — The Fastest is the Freshest; Anchor Mega Milk Tug-o-War; Mammoth Supply Company’s `Mammoth Man’ Strength Show; Fruju Oohh-Ahhh Dunking Station, and Calci-Yum Coconut Shy. The North Haven Hospice has been chosen as the Northland recipient of the gold coin collection, taken on the day. Cutting edge sports test traditional rivals

Auckland’s Central Business District is not where you would normally expect to see wood chopping, sheep shearing and dog trialing, but come mid-October head in and around Queens Wharf and be amazed. by Annette Lambly-Robinson

T

he Auckland events come hot on the heels of the same events staged in Wellington at Frank Kitt’s Park and Waitangi Park at Te Papa on October 1 and 2. Both events are organised by Cutting Edge Sport, a company formed to showcase these three iconic and traditional New Zealand Sports during the Rugby World Cup Tournament as part of the Real NZ Festival. The Cutting Edge Rural Sports 2011 experience brings the country to the city. Competitions include Trans-Tasman events — wood chopping and sheep dog trialing competitions along with speed shearing competitions in which New Zealand’s top eight shearers will sweat it out for the fastest time. Organiser (and a Dairy Flat sheep farmer himself) Steve Hollander said, “While the events will be staged as a public attraction they will still be highly competitive.’’ The traditional nature of these rural sports have a long history in this country and are strong in the hearts and minds of many New Zealanders. They are not however always able to

be readily enjoyed by city dwellers or visitors to the country. On October 17 at Queens Wharf, New Zealand’s top eight shearers will battle it out for supremacy. Champion shearers are recognised as world-class athletes. The physically demanding farming task of shearing sheep has become an elite competitive sport where shearers remove the fleece from the sheep at breathtaking speed. New Zealand is home to two shearing superstars — 2010 World Champion Cam Ferguson and David Fagan — a shearing legend who has won the world championships and New Zealand championships a record number of times. The two day Trans-Tasman test match dog trial series will take place Steve Hollander — event organiser

— for the first time ever right in the heart the of a major New Zealand city — Auckland Domain on October 19 and 20. Sheep dog trials are a test of the bond between the farmer and their ‘best friend’ — the working dog. The pair’s stockhandling skills are put to the test in a series of challenges which usually involve maneuvering a flock of wily sheep around a course and into a pen. Who will out-smart who in the quickest time? Forestry was one of this country’s first industries and our first export product. Being an axeman was once a livelihood but nowadays it is a much contested and skilled sport. Mr Hollander said the new Trans Tasman Wood Chopping ANZAXE series launched at Queens Wharf on October 19– 22 will become an annual fixture between the two countries. Two thirds of the top 20 axemen in the world hail from Australia or New Zealand. Lifetime achievement award for Sir William Gallagher New e th to n tio bu ri nt co ’s er gh lla Ga m ia ill W r Si with a ed is gn co re en be s ha or ct se y ir da s d’ an Zeal Lifetime Achievement Award. by Annette-Lambly Robinson

S

ir William was presented with the award at the launch of the 2012 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards competitions on September 27 at Gordonton. It is only the second time this award has been presented — retired Massey University professor Colin Holmes was the inaugural recipient in 2009. At 69, Sir William is considered one of New Zealand’s most astute businessmen. He chairs the Gallagher group — a family owned, Hamilton based exporter of animal management, fencing and security systems. He is a natural leader, whose communication skills and business influence is nationally and internationally recognised. NZDI trust’s chair Barbara Kuriger “We selected Sir William for this award because he took a proud, iconic New Zealand company

and succeeded with it internationally. His company’s contribution to New Zealand farming systems has been huge.” “He has created a work environment that encourages personal empowerment and independent thinking. A true entrepreneur, he has a sense of urgency and controlled risk taking, which is supported and managed by the positive team he works with,” Mrs Kuriger said. In presenting the award she said Sir William was a man who placed a strong emphasis on ethics and integrity in both his professional and personal dealings. “He is viewed by the trustees as an outstanding New Zealander and a fine example to current and prospective business people.” Married to Judi, the Gallaghers live in Hamilton. They have three adult children and are proud grandparents. Sir William was knighted in this year’s New Year’s honours for services to business. It is the third honour to be bestowed — he received an MBE in 1987

and was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998. He was also awarded the Queen’s Commemorative Medal for Services to New Zealand in 1990. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Waikato and in 1996 he was the winner of the prestigious Excellence in Communication Leadership award, the first time since its beginning in 1961 that the award had gone outside North America. Sir William has a strong and active commitment to the environment he lives and works in. He is a major sponsor of the Rescue Helicopter, Waikato Stadium, Mounted Police, Gallagher Family Hospice, Gallagher Hockey Centre and the establishment of the Performing Arts centre at Waikato. Bill Junior — (now Sir William) joined the Gallagher Group’s shop floor fresh out of university in 1962 and he along with his brother John (who left the company in 1997 but is still a shareholding director) have grown the company to what it is today — a multinational, multifaceted $100 million export company employing 1,000 people globally. From fences they have expanded into access control, security fencing and injection-moulded plastics. Their technology is in 130 countries, keeping prisoners locked up in the United States and elephants corralled in Africa. There is even Gallagher security fencing around Buckingham Palace. The world leading company has factories the world over and 70 percent of their products are exported.

the history behind the Gallagher Group

Back in the 1930s it’s doubtful Waikato farmer Bill Gallagher knew what ‘wiring’ his car to stop the family horse Joe from using is as a scratching post would lead to — he was really just looking for a solution to breaking Joe’s annoying habit. For Bill Gallagher Senior setting up an electric circuit to his car was a farmer’s approach to solving the problem. Bill was a bit of an inventor — he built homemade tractors — he fitted his first old car with iron-shod cleated wheels that pulled a roller to flatten scrub that was then burnt — a practical solution to help work his undeveloped farm. After reading the Americans were using electrified wire to hold stock in, in 1937 Bill Gallagher made his first electric fence. He originally used mains power to power the fence, but this was deemed illegal by the authorities and was

Bill Gallagher Senior — a bit of an inventor

disconnected. Undaunted Bill turned to batteries and Ford coils and continued developing and experimenting on his own farm until he had a pretty good product, albeit one that was only effective in small areas, it was very competitive on the market of the day.

The Gallagher energiser — circa 1938

In 1938 he formed the Gallagher Company which grew into a ‘10 man business’. In 1961 the law regarding main power supply was changed and the electric fence as we know it today was born. Continuing with ground breaking

technology and what began as a visionary alternative to the conventional fencing of the day, the company has grown into fully integrated animal management systems, offering not only electric fences, but weighing and electronic identification systems.

Riparian planting — facts and fallacies by Bob Cathcart Riparian planting is one of the tools available in the battle to improve water quality throughout Northland however our weather and landforms mean it’s not necessarily the only, or the best option. There is no simple formula for riparian management. You need to understand the processes operating at any point in a stream system and design measures that will achieve your objectives — riparian management is very site specific. The argument in favour of riparian planting relies on two processes. Firstly, vegetation planted along stream banks

will filter out sediment and nutrients washed off the land. Unfortunately, Northland’s rainfall intensity and landform is such that any runoff will form channels long before it reaches streamside vegetation and will simply flow through or over it into the waterway. Even when streamside vegetation is young and densely growing at ground level it will only filter out or trap a small proportion of what runs off adjacent hillsides. As it gets older and becomes more mature, bushes or trees will smother any grass that would have filtered runoff.

Cellmate Batteries

Repackers of Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh cordless power tool batteries etc. DID YOU KNOW That your cordless power tool batteries etc can be re-packed (re-built) right here in Whangarei? In most cases the cost is about 50% of the RRP of new and as we use high quality replacement cells, the batteries are normally of greater capacity than the originals. If you are unable to procure a particular type of battery then the chances are we can make it for you. So don’t throw your old batteries away, let Cellmate bring them back to life by having them re-packed.

The second argument for streamside vegetation is that it will soak up excess nutrients filtering through the soil into the stream. Native species typically demand low fertility, that is, they do not soak up large quantities of nitrogen and phosphate, the two major nutrient contaminants of streams. Almost all the phosphate running off Northland farms is bound to soil particles, particularly very fine or colloidal clay. Riparian margins do not pond runoff long enough to settle out this very fine material and plants cannot soak it up as it flows through. The other nutrient contaminant is nitrogen, a highly soluble element which travels as deeper groundwater flow, emerging as springs, so shrubs growing on free-draining riverbanks will not strip out nitrogen. Fortunately, Northland’s landform of gentle and often swampy valleys is ideal for trapping these nutrients before they reach major streams. A raised culvert in a crossing will dam a valley, creating a small wetland that will effectively trap any sediment and nutrients carried in runoff. A single-wire electric fence around the wetland will allow nutrient-stripping vegetation like Raupō to thrive. These nutrient/sediment traps do not need to be large to effectively buffer streams from intensive land use. Minimising nutrient loss and sediment

runoff through good pasture management — maintaining adequate grass cover and reducing pugging — is the simplest solution. There is a place for riparian planting, particularly in small tributary streams in upper catchments where a dense cover of ground-hugging sedges, flaxes and the like will trap runoff. Tall trees such as poplars planted on the northern side of major streams will provide shade, both reducing water temperature and the growth of aquatic weeds. Staff on the Northland Regional Council’s Sustainable Land Management team can help you work out the best riparian management solution for your property — phone 0800 002 004.

Help with pest plants Northlanders are being urged to not keep or plant pest plants in their garden. A Northland edition of the national Weedbusters 'Plant Me Instead' booklet — available free from Northland Regional Council offices — helps the public identify the 80 pest plants plaguing the region. The booklet contains suggestions of similar — but harmless plants, which can be used instead. Native and exotic alternatives are given for each pest plant. Sara Brill, a biosecurity officer with the regional council says too many patches of native bush, wetlands, lakes and other rural areas in Northland are being strangled by a number of garden plants that have gone wild. Plants include morning glory, climbing asparagus, arum lilies, agapanthus, jasmine and ginger. The pest plants are growing from dumped garden waste or seeds carried by birds and the wind. “They can quickly gain footholds in precious areas where it can be very costly

to try and control them,” said Ms Brill. To officially launch the booklet, organisers are having plants swaps in both Whangarei and Kerikeri this month and plan to give away about 450 native plants. Numbers are limited. To qualify people need to bring a shopping bag full of pest plants (including the roots) to either the Whangarei Growers Market, on October 15 or the Kerikeri Rotary Garden Safari on October 29. “Northland gardeners who take up the call to opt for less harmful species will be helping the region in more ways than one,” says Ms Brill. Not only will they be preventing the seed source but also save ratepayers’ money.

Northlanders are being urged to keep an eye out for an unwanted Australian pest recently found at a port near Whangarei. While it has been in the Auckland area for a decade it is not thought to have been in Northland until now. Officials hope to release a parasitic wasp to target the gum leaf skeletoniser whose caterpillar stage has poisonous spines that can deliver painful stings.

it favours eucalypts, gum leaf skeletoniser also thrives on silver birch and can damage some oak, copper beech and plum.

However such a release could be 12 months away and until then, experts are asking Northlanders coming across them to give them a wide berth.

“It's not only a nasty forestry pest but will affect eucalypt trees in home gardens, parks and reserves and schools,” said Mr McKenzie.

The insect damages gum trees by eating their leaves. Although

Cable Bay, Northland-based entomologist Dr Jenny Dymock who is contracted by the council says it could be up to a year before there are enough wasps available for release. “Transporting bark and leaf material, should be avoided, especially over the next couple of months and again in February/ March when pupae will be living in them,” says Dr Dymock. Stoats and weasels look very similar – both are brown with a white underbelly however stoats are larger and have a longer tail with a distinctive bushy black tip. “Spring is feasting time for stoats as their babies (called kits) begin to emerge from the den and search for food. Their numbers build over summer so trapping now can prevent them having an impact on young chicks.” Mr McKenzie says trapping is the most effective way to rid your area of stoats and give native birds a chance to raise their chicks.

Stoats are one of the most difficult animal pests to control and they kill an estimated average of 40 North Island brown kiwi chicks a day – a total of 15,000 a year or 60 percent of all kiwi chicks born annually. Northland Regional Council Biosecurity Senior Programme Manager, Don McKenzie, says stoats are one of a number of introduced pests that continue to wreak havoc on our environment and economy.

There are two main types of traps; the Department of Conservation (DOC) series and one called a Fenn trap. All DOC series ‘kill’ traps are capable of killing stoats, weasels, rats and hedgehogs. They have a wooden cover and are designed to target stoats while preventing pet cats or dogs being caught. Mr McKenzie says the best lure for stoats is fresh or salted rabbit but eggs and fish-flavoured cat food also work. “Traps should be set where stoats are likely to go, for example stream margins, the edges of bush, and near paths and roadways. Once set you can leave them in place and refresh the bait as required,” he says. You can buy stoat traps from the Northland Regional Council at a cost of around $70. For more information about killing stoats on your property – or about pest plants or animals in general – contact the Northland Regional Council Biosecurity team on 0800 002 004 or visit www.nrc. govt.nz/nasties.

Yamaha’s Grizzly series of ATVs has long been legendary for toughness and practicality — a byword for reliability in the most demanding environments. But the next generation of this hard-working machine is by no means a stark and utilitarian tool. The engineers at Yamaha have worked hard to refine the performance of the Grizzly (both the 700cc and 500cc models), adding a level of comfort and ease of use which would be the envy of some road cars. While the capable power of the big 700cc and 550cc power plant is still all that you could want for a hard day’s work, Yamaha have upgraded key areas to make a day’s work aboard the Grizzly a more comfortable and safer experience! The innovative speed-sensitive power steering of the Grizzly removes the chore of wrestling with the handlebars at low speeds. Combined with a low centre of gravity and an innovative chassis the Grizzly handles and rides better than its predecessors, traversing uneven ground and slopes with aplomb. Independent suspension and a generous ground clearance help smooth out the bumps and the mud. Attention to detail has been lavished on the Grizzly’s automatic transmission as well — a v-belt system which gives you power when you need it. Unlike other automatics, the Grizzly is also smart enough to know when a little engine braking is needed, slowing your descent when you’re tackling the steep stuff. The switch between four-wheel and two-wheel drive is now just as easy as pushing a button, with four-wheel drive delivering ‘locked differential’ torque to really handle a load. All in all, the new Yamaha Grizzly is a great example of innovation in just the right places — the successful core of Yamaha’s flagship ATV has been left just as we wanted it, while every modification hits the spot to provide the safety and comfort the modern market demands.

Where dreams come true Hayley Parker was a city girl living in Auckland, with dreams of farming and — one day — working on a sheep muster on horse back

“I had no farming background. It was one of those dreams you have when you’re a kid, but it never seemed possible.” For city-born and bred, Hayley Parker, that dream was to ride the wide open spaces on horseback, driving a mob of sheep with a good mob of dogs at her heels and revelling in the country life.

Read the paper online www.farminglifestyles.co.nz

His ambition drove her to look for what a transition from city to country would involve. She soon sourced what courses were available for her to take, and admits that when she told her parents she wanted to do the Future Farming training programme through Agricultural New Zealand, “they were a bit taken aback.” However, Haley undertook a Gateway programme in Year 13 — and then went on to do the Future Farming training programme, spending the next year

Education vaccinating, crutching, drenching and fencing — everything really,” said Hayley. She is now 20 years old and is currently working Goudies Station — a sheep, beef and deer genetics farm operated by Landcorp which borders the Kiangaroa forest. “I am really happy. What I’m doing is what I love. A dream of mine is to do a big muster on horse back with a good team of dogs.” She says the courses leading to an agricultural career involve getting “thrown in the deep end. You’re not eased into it — but that is in a good way. It’s good experience and there are always plenty of people you can ask for help.” The overall programme coordinator, Mark Goss, says the Future Farmer programme is a platform from which to step up, take on a challenge and get into learning. GORSE GONE IN A DAY Improve your land’s value in hours by removing gorse and other noxious weeds without chemical sprays Transforming paddocks from unusable eyesores into great looking areas that help pay for themselves is keeping Ken Borg’s company busy. Ken has been in business since 1997 as a qualified builder and started All About Earth Moving 2005 to offer clients a range of land enhancement services. The purchase of an $80,000 mulching attachment to his digger gave the company an edge and led the company into a whole new area of land clearing services. The firm’s go-anywhere digger is able to clear acres of gorse, long grass and noxious weeds in a matter of hours. “Land is expensive and so owners need to make every inch pay for itself,” says Ken. “Whether they want to increase grazing land for their cattle or increase the land’s resale value, removing unwanted shrubbery such as gorse can make a big difference.” All About Earth Moving’s services really is a case of ‘no job too big’ as its machinery is able to access any gradient and plough into gorse the size of trees — and mulch it down to nothing. “The mulcher is very powerful and can turn gorse into tiny fragments,” says Ken. “Getting good results is far quicker than spraying which can take months to kill gorse. Even after gorse is dead, it still sits on the land looking brown and horrible – it can take years to deteriorate and break down. “Using the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next.” Mulching gorse saves on using expensive and dangerous chemical sprays too, says Ken. “There is a place for spraying gorse because we all know that this is a hardy weed that doesn’t die easily,” says Ken. “Gorse seeds can live in the ground for up to 50 years — so the best anyone can do is manage the problem.” Ken recommends people save money by using a selective spray on gorse re-sprouting that may appear the following season after the machine has been over the land. “Gorse can really choke up the land, so by removing it we give grass a chance to grow,” says Ken. “Of course, gorse may begin to sprout in time, so we recommend the land owner keep an eye on this and perform targeted spraying when required, normally the following season. “This saves a fortune in chemicals and is better for the land. Mass spraying of large areas is not something I would recommend as it can also take out native bush that you are trying to keep.

“Mulching breaks up the gorse so it rots down and puts nutrients into the soil to promote grass growth, the mulch also stops soil run off when it rains. Ken says real estate agents value the work his firm does as removing gorse increases the chances of land being sold. “Real estate agents know we can make land far more attractive and sellable — after all — who wants to buy land covered in acres of gorse and other noxious weeds? “What we can offer people is a very quick way to add value to their land. So it is a perfect solution for land owners who need to free land up for grazing live stock.” Apart from gorse, All About Earth Moving can remove all sorts of noxious weeds on steep hills, including trees still standing in place down to ground level. “Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can go anywhere,” says Ken. ”And while long grass may not be such a big problem during winter, in summer it can be a fire hazard. We can remove it quickly and easily and give landowners peace of mind.” Some people find it hard to understand what an effective job the company’s machinery can do.

“So we had a video made so people can see with their own eyes how we can transform a paddock in hours — anyone can watch it on our website,” says Ken. Using such powerful machinery, health and safety comes first, second and third for Ken. “The safety of people, livestock and property is the top priority for us,” he says. “We understand we are working on other people’s land with very powerful machinery. So health and safety is a priority.” Naturally, the company is fully insured so landowners can be confident that if anything untoward did happen on site, they will not be left out of pocket. “Our business is built on our reputation, people trust us and building on that trust is very important to me personally,” says Ken. After 40 years as a farmer, familiarity with machinery is natural for Paparoa’s Rex Browne.

house and farm building sites, build drainage, supply and cart limestone and metal, carry out fencing, cultivation, mulching, race forming — in fact any facet of rural and agricultural operations.

“I have been full-time contracting for 18 years while my family, my wife Colleen, son Scott and daughter Hayley, run our 450-acre dairy farm at Paparoa. Colleen manages the property fully, looking after the dairy operation. But in reality, I suppose I have been contracting for 40 years, when you count working my own properties.” The family is milking 300 cows. The farm is typically fairly wet and rolling country and they split-calve autumn-spring, milking once a day. Last Christmas they welcomed a new 24-a-side herringbone cowshed to the property. Rex and a full-time staff of two, backed up by four to five casual employees, operate Rex Browne Contracting Ltd “from Wellsford to Whangarei and coast to coast — covering the Kaipara. “This season we are extending our specialist operations into maize,” added Rex. “We’ve just taken delivery of a reverse steer Valtra 135 from Finland along with a new four-row Kuhn Quattro harvester, and an Amazone planter. So we are fully equipped for maize from go to whoa.” He is growing 10 hectares of maize

The company also has equipment for hire. “And as things on the maize front are already gearing up it would be helpful for clients to book in with us,” adds Rex.

“As we say — from clay to hay. We do round and square baleage of hay and silage.”

Rex Browne — extending his specialist operations into maize

on his leased property, which combined with his original farm purchased after eight years sharemilking in the Waikato and two neighbouring properties, he has since bought. “We are growing to supplement the farm feed, as we try to get the best productivity as we undertake pasture renewal. It was a logical extension of our overall contracting business to extend into maize operations in the Kaipara. We undertake the whole operation, from cultivation, to sowing to harvesting.” With an additional five tractors, two excavators, three trucks and ‘all the associated gear’ Rex and his team form

have slowly built up the business to where we are now. I started out with a single bulk spreader truck to myself and carried out spreading fertiliser for about seven or eight years, and then my brother Craig came on board and we bought a bulk truck to form Williamson Spreading and Cartage Ltd. “Then a year or so later we bought a digger and our other brother, Blair, joined the firm.” After operating the company together, the brothers have diversified. “They have gone on to other ventures — Craig has gone kumara farming as well as running our parents Kumara farm, as is Blair after his OE. Blair also runs our quarry and helps out with both dairy and kumara farms.” The Williamson parents are Phil and Bronwyn, who farm at Arapohue. Williamson Spreading and Cartage sold a 50 per cent share of the fertiliser spreading business to Ravensdown last year and the new company, Spreading Northland, now “covers anywhere in the Northland, if need be,” says Jason. The new company operates four spreader units. “We started last October and it has been going well. On top of farming, quarrying and fert spreading comes cartage and general contracting.” Williamson contracting runs two bulk trucks and two diggers, and a bulldozer,

Rural Contracting in spotlight The government is this month beginning a review of transport rules affecting agricultural contractors and vehicles. “We want to make sure these rules are ensuring public safety without imposing unnecessary red-tape,” says Associate Transport Minister, Nathan Guy. “Contractors and farmers need to harvest crops when they are ready, and when the weather is right. Sometimes this may mean working long and irregular hours. The current rules around work time and logbook requirements may not provide enough flexibility for what is a very important industry. “We will also be looking into the rules around over-dimension and overweight vehicles, speed limits and vehicle inspections. We need to recognise that many of these vehicles, such as tractors carrying heavy loads, may not spend much time on public roads. “The government has listened closely

to industry concerns and asked the Ministry of Transport to begin work on this review immediately. “The review will consider whether there is room to reduce compliance costs and enhance economic growth and productivity, without compromising safety. We recognise that there will always be a need for safeguards to protect operators and road users from fatigue and other risks. Officials will consult with industry, Federated Farmers, rural contractors and other road user groups and will consider how overseas regulatory models compare to those in New Zealand. A position paper will be provided to stakeholders later in the year, and officials plan to report back to the Government on emerging issues early next year.

Fishing Hunting Careful planning:

The key to safe hunting this spring Spring is here, daylight saving has commenced and hunters venturing into the bush are being urged, by the Mountain Safety Council, to ensure they are adequately equipped. Firearms safety and hunter training programme manager, Mike Spray, encourages hunters to use the Outdoor Safety Code as the basis for their preparation. “Before going into backcountry hunters need to plan well and have the skills and experience to deal with unexpected situations,” said Mr Spray. Weather in the spring months can deteriorate rapidly and cold conditions can be encountered with little warning. Those travelling south to hunt should also remember in alpine areas and above the bush-line there is also an increased avalanche risk to take into consideration. “Even experienced hunters can strike problems in the outdoors,” said Mr Spray. “Survival may rely on your ability to wait it out until conditions improve or to raise the alarm quickly. Careful preparation, making the right decisions and having a back-up plan when things go wrong can ensure your hunting trip is safe and enjoyable,” he said. Mr Spray advises every hunter to ‘know before you go’ and follow the five simple rules of the Outdoor Safety Code:

1. Plan your trip. Seek local knowledge and plan the route you will take and the amount of time you can reasonably expect it to take.

2. Tell someone. Tell someone where you’re going, when you’ll be back and how to raise the alarm if you don’t return.

3. Be aware of the weather. New Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the forecast and expect weather changes.

GPS land-based fishing

Phil Sherer, from Seahorse Electric Kontikis, ventured out to Baylys Beach, near Dargaville, to demonstrate their latest product — the new GPS Seahorse 46, winch, traceboard and also the motorised trolley. The conditions were great and the demo attracted a strong crowd of 65 — as well as some snapper for dinner. Phil is currently travelling the country to demonstrate the new Seahorse, which promises to stay on track. “Our new Seahorse has a GPS guided autopilot in it,” explains Phil.

4. Know your limits. Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience. Maintain outdoor skills including navigation and dealing with emergencies.

5. Take sufficient supplies. Make sure you have enough food, equipment, clothing and emergency rations for the worst-case scenario. Be prepared for at least one extra night. Take an appropriate means of communication for emergency situations such as a mountain radio or a personal locator beacon.

Phil Sherer demonstrating the GPS seahorse “You simply get to the beach, set it up and point it in the direction you Onlooker, Allan Mortensen, said he want it to go.
