Three DairyNZ director positions will be hotly contested over the next month, having drawn in 10 farmer candidates – the most received by the industry body in recent years. Along with the 10 standing for Board of Director positions, four farmer candidates have put their name forward for three seats on DairyNZ’s Directors’ Remuneration Committee. Electionz.com returning officer Anthony Morton is encouraging farmers to have their say. “It’s easy to vote and quick to do. Farmer levy payers can vote by the internet, post or fax — or in person at the AGM. These candidates will represent dairy farmers nationwide so it would be great to see a strong turnout of voters.” Results from the double election will be announced at the DairyNZ Annual General Meeting in Morrinsville on October 13. The farmers seeking a four-year term as a DairyNZ director are vying for election following chairman John Luxton and directors Michael Spaans and Ben Allomes retiring by rotation. After 12 years, Mr Luxton is standing down from the board. There’s been a lot of noise about health and safety and the Government’s amendments to the Health and Safety Reform Bill. “We’ve been pointing out to the government that farmers need workable and sensible legislation so it was good to see that sheep and beef farms, which on average employ fewer than two fulltime people, won’t be required to elect a health and safety representative,” said Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman, James Parsons. “Not classifying agriculture as a ‘high risk’ sector by no means lets us off easy and assertions that our sector is trying to dodge our health and safety responsibilities are completely unfounded. “Some commentary that has described farming as one of the worst industries for workplace deaths based on total fatalities does not take account of the scale of the sector. When you divide the serious accidents by the total number of farming workers, then our health and safety record is suddenly brought into context.” Mr Parsons says there are a number of areas they will continue to work with the Government and WorkSafe New Zealand on. “We are working closely with Federated Farmers and DairyNZ on this and other issues. It is important that farmers continue to individually talk with politicians across the floor so there are no last minute changes to the legislation. ”By the end of the week of September 10 when the 2015 Sheepmeat and Beef Levy Referendum closes, BLNZ directors will have conducted 53 referendum information meetings around the country in that last fortnight. Farmers have been strongly in support of retaining BLNZ as their farmer organisation, however there has been good discussion on where we need to do better.

Some comments from across BLNZ’s different areas of work have included the market access work pursuing reduced tariffs and the reduction or removal of other barriers to our export sector, is strongly supported. “With market development, farmers are keen to engage in a review of farmer investment in promotion after the referendum. We have committed to such a review,” said Mr Parsons. “The environment has been a hot topic – with farmers pleased to see more support for sheep and beef farmers but flagging that they need more in the future. Environment is one of the areas we have identified as an area to do more in through the next six-year cycle. “There is strong support around research but farmers are keen to see a better weighting towards more beef research. This referendum is quite simply about whether farmers want a

WHEN ONE GATE CLOSES by Ayla Miller
From an early age Peter Eagles knew his true calling was farming. When he survived a serious accident, his shearing dreams were dashed, seeing him become the manager of one of Northland’s largest Landcorp farms in Mangatoa, instead.
“I
north where his wife’s mother is from. “I managed Omamari in Dargaville for three years and had three years of droughts. Omamari has its own challenges and it was hard going but I wanted bigger. I was used to the big stations.� When the job came up at Mangatoa, he leapt at the chance to move further north, knowing this was one of the biggest stations in Northland. “My goal was always to manage a large station I was so used to working over the East Coast and Taihape where your paddocks went for miles, and this was closest I was ever going to get in Northland.� He has three children, one daughter and two sons. His 16-year-old works part-time in the shearing gang as a
left school a bit earlier than I should have,� he said of his decision to join a shearing gang in Taihape, aged 15. After the car accident, he could no longer work as a shearer and, not wanting to abandon his farming dreams, worked as a shepherd before moving to the east coast to work for the Harbour Board on Tauwhareparae, Tamatea and then Hurirua. It was during that time that cyclone bola hit the east coast and after the clean up Peter returned home to work as head shepherd on Mangaohane Station for five years. It was here he met his wife Reona before moving to Taumarunui, managing three sheep and beef farms. After 14 years here he decided to move further

at the end of the day and finishing 1200 steers every year.” He manages a team of nine people along with casual staff and contractors, ranging from 21-year-olds to 65-yearolds. “We have our ups and downs but we all get on alright,” he says. “I employ quite a few young people. Seven years ago I took a young guy under my wing. He was a really good learner and his skills and work ethics are above par. He is now applying for manager roles.” As for his shearing dreams, he doesn’t resent having to give that up and says he is quite happy managing a farm instead. “It is a really good career path for young people. If you stick with it there is some good money and it’s a good lifestyle.”

presser and he too wants to be a shearer. His 13-year-old wants to be a digger driver and his eldest Lee-Anne lives in Rotorua. “They have been working with me since they could walk. Now I get the youngest ones helping out on the farm during the holidays,” he says. The Mangatoa station is about 4670 hectares, 4200 of those are productive. There are 700 cows and they finish about 1200 two-year-old steers, selling around 400 bulls to Landcorp for service bulls. A typical day begins at 7am in the winter when Peter calls the stock manager and the head shepherd to discuss whether there are any changes to the weekly or monthly plan. Landcorp farms have set procedures that must be followed to ensure work is happening in the right place at the right time. “We have about 9000 ewes and 2800 hogget in between breeding. The top ones go to the rams and anything over 42.5 kilograms stays dry for the first 12 months. “All our mobs are on a big rotation. We set up a plan and work through that process. The first week of the month we go through our animal health plan.” He says the most rewarding part of the job is seeing the younger generation find their love of farming much like he did. “I enjoy the young workers coming through and seeing them reach their goals and succeed. A lot of people gave me a chance when I was younger and I like to return the favour, taking in people and giving them a chance.” It is also the lifestyle that keeps Peter happy and being able to spend his days off hunting and fishing. “We have some of the best fishing up here in Northland,” he says. Back on the farm, it’s a different type of target that he enjoys. “I enjoy hitting all the targets

hey have been married for 41 years and Doug is a councillor for the NZ Highland Cattle Society. Jenny loves the country lifestyle and is very involved in the local community. She is a JP and an Anglican minister at Helensville and Kaukapakapa. “I decided to go shepherding when I left school and my plan was to own a farm. I eventually gave up shepherding and went into business. We owned a caravan and motorhome manufacturing company and squirrelled away a wee bit of finance and purchased our 225 acres in 1992,” said Doug. “We wanted cattle that would fit with how we wanted to run the property and discovered the Highland cattle breed. We purchased four to see if we liked them and if they suited our plans. They were great so we bought more and started our breeding programme in 2005. This

got us to where we are today with about 50 breeding cows. “We became heavily involved with showing the cattle. They are a wonderful breed and people just have to be prepared to put in a bit of leg work. They are not difficult to break in and handle. I broke in a six-year-old cow and taught it to lead and won the senior cow event with her at the national winter show. She was the best out of 13.” In 2010 Jenny and Doug travelled to Scotland to the third International Highland Cattle Gathering which is a Highland Cattle conference, held every four years. “While in Scotland, we looked at their cattle to see how New Zealand stock matchup. We certainly do have world class cattle here. “Highland cattle are a heritage breed, and it is really important that we foster the breed and the pedigrees are all correctly developed and continued. “The animals are really good mothers. They are free calving — we very rarely have to assist them and they raise one calf really well. They are good milkers and foragers and particularly good on rougher country although they also thrive on lush pastures. “We had a lot of gorse and blackberry on the property. We are nearly on top of it now thanks to the cattle. When it has been sprayed they come in and smash it to bits a year later. The original cattle were used in Scotland by the crofters — small landholding occupiers — as an all

It has taken 10 years to get a white calf. A yellow cow and a dark yellow bull produced it, you just can’t predict the colour of Highland cattle purpose animal and they were used for butter, milk and beef. “The meat is fantastic, very low in cholesterol and highly marbled. We sell steers for those who want to grow it for their freezer and we sell in-calf heifers and cows.” The animals have a very long breeding span, the oldest recorded calving cow in NZ is 23-years-old. “They start calving at three-years-old rather than two but they calve regularly until well into their late teens. “While missing one calf at the beginning we gain at least five due to the length of years they breed for. As a breed, if handled properly they are
very quiet. Even with the horns they are not difficult. I bring them into the yards quite a lot when they are young and their horns are short so they get used to it. They get used to the race and when the horns grow they just tilt their head to one side. “I guess it’s like anything, you get a soft spot for something, and we have a soft spot for these cattle.” We will have an Open Fold weekend between 1pm and 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday October 17 and 18. Seamus Murnane first realised he had a passion for farming when he worked at a friend’s farm north of Whangarei four years ago. He is now 19-years-old and is determined to forge a career in agriculture.
H
is family are not from a farming background — they moved to Whangarei from Auckland when he was young and he didn’t have any farm experiences prior to the move. Seamus’ experiences came from mixing with friends who lived in the country and he enjoyed the lifestyle so much he decided to see what he could make of it. The first opportunity arose through Pompallier Catholic College in Whangarei where he attended a Primary Industries Gateway course. Seamus spent time on a farm as part of his school curriculum and enjoyed it so much he was back working in the holidays. “I was awake at 5am each morning and spent long hours happily doing farm duties. My favourite task was looking
after the 180 Holstein Friesians. I would help to milk them twice a day, feeding them, learning about their behaviour and talking the language of farming,” said Seamus. “I could never see myself working in an office. I loved getting up early and working outdoors. Gateway was a great experience and gave me the hands-on start I needed.” The farm experience helped him earn his NCEA level two credits in 2012 and he left college after that year determined to make farming his livelihood. A family friend told him that Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre in the Wairarapa was a good place and offered the practical side of learning. He researched the centre and enrolled. Taratahi has been successfully training

Kiwis for agricultural careers since 1919. The main campus is based near Masterton in the Wairarapa, with nonresidential campuses in Northland and other areas of the country. Seamus has now gained his National Certificate in Agriculture, Level four Dairy and he has secured a full time position at Rotopai Farms, about 45 minutes towards the coast from Masterton. He started a full-time role late last year after already having completed one calving season with the farm. Rotopai operates a herd of 2,950 cows and Seamus says the job is not for the faint hearted. “It is busy and hectic but enjoyable — I have learned a lot,” he said. He says that working at Rotopai means that he is learning fast that farming has to be profitable to survive, and to do that, cows must be looked after and respected. Sustainability is key. “The course taught me all the basic skills needed and cemented the idea of farming in my head really. “Part of my responsibility is the milking. The herd is split between two sheds and I help milk 1600 cows. This can take five hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. I also help with the calving, fencing and other odd jobs around the place.” They start some mornings at 3am and he works with nine other staff members. He says at the moment he is just getting to know the place and settling into a routine of how things work on the property. “I would like to end up sharemilking eventually and go on to own a farm one day. Working here is a good experience and the whole team pitch in and everyone has something to offer. We learn off each other and the opportunity presented to us here is well worth the effort. “Having a place like this farm to learn from is a big step in the large scheme of things.”

Seamus’ commitment to his career and hard work was recognised by a Dairy NZ Vocational Training Excellence Award. “I’m chuffed, it’s an acknowledgement of my pathway so far,” he said. “The DairyNZ Vocational Training Excellence Award provides support and industry recognition for talented dairy trainees like Seamus,” said DairyNZ Industry Education Facilitator, Susan Stokes. ”The aim of this award is to encourage them to not only complete their courses and gain qualifications, but to excel and also inspire them to go as far as they can in our industry.

Succession plans are under review As a result of the change in the economics of the beef industry and in the market value of grazing land over the past few years, some drystock farmers are reviewing their succession plans. The latest rural press release from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, who collect sales statistics reported by real estate agents nationwide, reports an increase in the median sale price of grazing farms as being up by 9.5 per cent on last year. Lately our stronger beef prices and favourable interest rates have helped quite a few Kaipara drystock farmers to retire or semi-retire. This has traditionally been an industry where succession planning has been minimal. Very often the younger generation have received a good education and moved into off-farm careers where they are doing very well. The high value of grazing land, relative to the income it produces, has probably been a challenge for the younger generation, making it difficult for one son or daughter to buy out others, and difficult for the retiring generation to fund their next move — whether it be a new house on the farm or elsewhere. As a result, the average age of drystock farmers continues to creep up, although at present it is good to see
some younger farmers actively growing their businesses and making it work. Currently there is a greater demand for land to lease than usual, as these farmers look for opportunity to grow their businesses. Some drystock farmers are now recognising the combination of improved returns and relatively low interest rates as favourable conditions for succession, taking a step back so the next generation can get a good foothold. Others who don’t have any younger family members wishing to continue the family business may see the current market value of grazing land as a window of opportunity to exit the industry. Figuratively speaking, every dollar extra a farmer can obtain for his farm is worth two dollars earned in the economy. To come out better off a farmer needs to time the natural rise and fall of the rural real estate market as best he can as nobody has a crystal ball. Although the graph below is a year out of date it still shows how the value of a farm can rise and fall by up to 30 per cent of its value over a ten year period. (source www.reinz.co.nz).

The Feed Tactics field days will focus on helping farmers get the best returns from all feeds used on-farm. The nationwide events follow on from one-on-one feed review visits which provided more than 750 farms with an assessment of feed allocation and grazing management in early spring. DairyNZ’s Sean McCarthy says about one third of the farms visited were ‘spot on’ with their feed management, with the majority just needing slight refinements. “Most farmers just needed to make a few tweaks to their pasture management to ensure pasture growth and quality were maximised,” says Mr McCarthy. “For many of these farmers, feed allowance was an issue. They were overestimating the amount of feed a cow can eat in early lactation and therefore leaving slightly higher than target residuals and grazing too much
area per day. This is just one example where changes in feed management can really pay off down the track. Profitable farmers, no matter what system they run, have a ‘pasture first’ mentality. They measure and work to optimise the cheapest feed source — home grown pasture — and then incorporate supplements where a clear economic response is achieved. He says at a $3.65 milk price the difference between poor feed management, where little assessment of indicators such as grazing residuals are made, and optimal feed management, where pasture decisions are based on accurate feed allocation, can be worth hundreds of dollars per hectare. “Even a few tweaks to daily management can make a difference. The events will help dairy farmers identify areas where they can make
these ‘tweaks’ and also get their staff on board.” The field days will focus on grazing management skills — effective use of supplements and developing an efficient feed management process for the farm team. DairyNZ experts from research and development will provide in-paddock demonstrations and practical tips for allocating pasture. Milk response to supplement and decision rules around supplement use to ensure the best return will also be covered. “For all farmers the ability to add in or take out the correct supplements as pasture supply, milk price and climate dictate, is important to help keep costs under control,” says Mr McCarthy. Pasture myth busted Many farmers believe you can count on an extra 100 grams milk solids produced with each kilogram of dry matter supplement added to the system however DairyNZ senior scientist Jane Kay has set about to bust this myth once and for all. Ms Kay discovered that the total milk solids response to supplementary feed is on average much lower than previously thought. Research conditions see supplementary feeds return 70-80g MS/kg DM. This is approximately 7.5g MS/MJ ME offered, and with small herd sizes, loss of supplements is restricted and waste is avoided through careful management to maintain quality. Commercial farms have reported the average MS response to supplement as being 55g MS/kg DM. This study has found that despite the potential to increase total intake and increase production through adding supplements to pasture, the actual MS response is variable to less than expected. There are several factors affecting the MS response to supplements including the reduction in pasture intake occurring
when supplements are distributed and wastage of supplement which will vary depending on infrastructure, type of supplement and method of feeding as well as energy that is not partitioned directly to milk production. The greatest impact on MS response is the decrease in the amount of pasture consumption when the herd is fed supplements. This is referred to as substitution and depends on how hungry the cow is. If she is very hungry there are lower grazing residuals, meaning a lower rate of substitution and a greater MS response. Other factors affecting the MS response in pasture based systems are the seasons and the quantity of supplement fed. All these need to be remembered when calculating MS response to supplement.

Well volatility may have done its worst, but dairy farmers’ need to grow grass is more important than ever this season. In recent years the scepticism would have been rife, with a likely retort being that they were probably organic and milking fifty cows. However, more recently, we are hearing that an increasing number of farmers are actively seeking alternatives to fertiliser N dependency. While the assumption has been that regular doses of N fert will result in endlessly increasing pasture production, we have found no long term whole farm research to back this up. Rather, many are finding they grow less pasture than some years ago, and have taken to buying in more supplement and grazing off to cover the shortfall. This has tended to mask where the continued high levels of production are actually coming from. At the start of use of fert N there is a noticeable increase in growth, but as time and use go on, the users have found that it takes more

and more N to get even the same result, and often this result steadily diminishes over time. What many don’t realise is that carbon is most rapidly sequestered under grazed pasture, and not just by forest cover. When soil life processes are working effectively much of that carbon is built into humus, and it is increased humus in our soils that is needed for increasing pasture production. The horribly low payout will, for most farmers, preclude all but the strategic use of high energy supplement, so pasture will be needed more than ever to keep herds well fed and producing. Using just fert N and expecting it to do the trick won’t work, as other basic nutrients such as calcium will be needed to maintain growth and preclude infestations of pests. There are already long term whole farm examples of steadily increasing pasture growth without reliance on fert N. Not only is growth increasing year on year, total annual production is at least the equal of any conventionally fertilised property. Applying extra calcium as lime, as soon as cows have calved, is a viable low cost alternative. The current soggy soil conditions won’t last and the hot dry

Clover is also more digestible, which means animals can eat more kilos, and produce at a higher level. Strong healthy clover is also less affected by flea and weevil and recovers more rapidly from being grazed. Its ability to fix nitrogen free of charge diminishes the requirement for autumn and early winter N fert applications. Lime with added soil friendly fungi and bacteria achieves more benefits in less time and allows the calcium to be released faster, and the ‘extras’ rapidly assist what are already present to simulate pasture growth. Earthworms also get busy and create deep channels to hold moisture and allow nutrients to move downwards, so minimising drought effects. A white line debate I was reading a recent article about a farmer who has overcome their lameness issues. In the article it is explained how white line disease is caused by long distance walking. “The sole wears thin and when there is pressure applied to the herd little stones will work their way into the hoof and cause infections.” This article again shows me how there are still people out there with a wrong understanding of what causes white line disease and most lameness issues in New Zealand. For one, this theory has no evidence to back it up, two, it doesn’t make sense if you think about it and thirdly there is evidence to show this theory to be incorrect. In a previous article I asked people to show me some indisputable evidence to prove the possibility of this theory. I received some responses but no real evidence was presented. I won’t go into that now but I will on the other two points. One, the theory explained above doesn’t make sense. When cows walk long distances their hooves will wear faster — that is logical, natural, and if the live tissue in the hoof didn’t respond to that faster wear then the cow would end up with major problems. As a matter of fact, the whole herd would end up with worn out hooves and you would not be able to milk cows on big farms. You would need to keep the cows in their paddock because any unnatural wear on a track will cause a problem with worn out hooves. Fortunately, cows are created with the ability to adapt just like other creatures. Just look at your own hands. If you do more physical work with your hands your body responds to that by growing more calluses. In the same way, the corium (live tissue in the claw) will respond to more wear by growing more hoof — especially when they have been walking on the tracks for months. However, sometimes we go to farms and all the hooves are soft and thin. This is true,
and the question needs to be asked why is that? Why does the corium sometimes not respond in a sustainable manner? The only explanation I can come up with is that the corium is not functioning properly due to being unhealthy or maybe the thinner soles are not a problem to the cow. To answer the question on what makes the corium unhealthy is a whole article or articles on its own. If you want to know more you can attend one of our trimming courses and/or seminars to find out. Second, I also want to show you some evidence of the opposite to be true. Do you notice that white line disease happens more on the outer claw — especially when there is more height difference between the claws? So, white line disease actually occurs more often with a thicker sole rather than a thinner sole. We did a trimming trial a few years ago where we showed that if you trim the outer claw to the same height as the inner claw you end up with less lameness. So, by trimming the outer
claw you make it thinner and yet you end up with less lameness. This goes against the theory that was described in the article that I was referring to. I realise that there is a lot more to the
white line disease issue than I can cover in this article. I intend to cover a bit more of that in my next article and you can always contact me if you have questions on this subject. *

This means for the hours of 7am to 11pm they pay slightly more than double the per kwh rate they are charged from 11pm to 7am. Most of their milking is accomplished on the power low rate - this works well for them as they leave the shed at approximately 8am with the milk in the vat at three degrees celcius and the unit turned off. This rate may not be available in all areas. Check with your power supplier to discuss the options they have available for your situation. Careful consideration is required before you agree on a plan that requires your refrigeration unit to be controlled along with your hot water cylinder. If it is turned off before the milk is at the correct temperature problems can occur. A couple of years ago I arranged local Four Square stores to compare their monthly power accounts. By doing so they discussed what they do - such as turn lights off, service their refrigeration units and cleaning condensers. In doing this all stores reduced their power account remarkably, so I suggest you
talk to farmers in similar situations as yourselves in your area and exchange power saving ideas. Some farmers are already reporting and improving their pre-cooling and if they improve their power usage it is a huge plus and may even save a grade. A couple of useful tips:

A lightbulb moment for Northland man Dan Hall of Danz Zappz, has recently won him the 2015 National Agricultural Fieldays Vodafone Innovation Award for his mobile phone app that detects whether or not an electric fence is on. The app, Fence Detective, is available for most Android phones and an antenna is about to be released which enables even more Android phones to use it and means users can detect a fence current from even further away. “It has been pretty exciting and a bit of a rollercoaster ride. We have had a lot of off-shore interest particularly from South Africa, Canada and Ireland,” says Mr Hall. He says the idea came to him when he was out walking and needed to cross an electric fence. “I couldn’t go over it or under it and I wasn’t going to walk a kilometre around it, so I pulled my phone out to call the farmer and ask him if the fence was on and that was the lightbulb moment. “I thought why can’t I point my phone at the fence, you seem to be able to do everything else with phones, so I looked up who makes apps and discovered Massey University, Beta Solutions Ltd. “On the website was an automated form that said we make entrepreneurs out of ideas. So I filled out the form
with my idea and within half an hour my phone rang and it was the university wanting to know more.” The app works by picking up the electromagnetic waves and sending the phone a signal. The new antenna extends the range that the current can be picked up from. The Kaihu resident owns a 10-acre lifestyle block planted in pine trees and says he has always been into entrepreneurial concepts. “I think it is related to growing up and surviving in a rural area and having to use your mind.” The app was created with assistance from Muli Mobile, Beta Solutions Ltd, Palmerston North Massey University and Dan’s company Danz Zappz. “It’s a revolutionary app, there is nothing like it in the world,” he says, noting that trampers seem to be his largest market. It instantly gets rid of the fear factor. With most other fence checking devices you have got to touch the fence or get very close to it and this one you don’t have to.

Buyers battle vigorously Over the past few weeks the New Zealand wool auction market has gradually ‘turned up the heat’ and with a number of exporters struggling to fill orders prices for some categories have reached record levels. With limited volumes coming forward due to a range of influencing factors, buyers have battled vigorously to gain supremacy in the auction room.

attracted extreme demand with prices reaching to within a few cents of fleece levels as buyers feverishly pursued those on offer. Halfbred and Corriedale wool types continued to enjoy solid support from the exporting fraternity attending the August 20th auction, with well grown and well prepared fleece wools measuring 28 microns at around 1,010 to 1,030 cents per clean kilogram, 27 microns around 1,100 cents per clean kilogram, and 26 microns around 1,150 to 1,180 cents per clean kilogram. As mentioned in previous editions, Halfbred and Corriedale wools remain of a very high standard considering the on-farm conditions experienced during the past 12 months. An exceptional offering of extra-fine merino wools, measuring between 15.5 and 17.0 microns, offered in the PGG Wrightson catalogue on August 20 from the Central Otago region drew fantastic interest from a wide range of export houses domiciled in both New Zealand and Australia, and representing all major fine wool processors in Asia and Europe, with prices ranging from
Unfortunately within the distribution area of this publication, many growers have been unable to capitalise on the fierce market competition due to the extremely difficult wool growing conditions. Crossbred fleece wool measuring from about 36 to 39 microns reached prices from between 585 and 590 cents per clean kilogram at the most recent auction, at time of writing, held in Christchurch on August 20. Finer full-length fleece types measuring 35 microns reached around 625 cents per clean kilogram, 34 microns between 685 and 745 cents, 33 microns from 770 to 820 cents, 32 microns from 795 to 890 cents, and 31 microns from 880 to 905 cents per clean kilogram. Second-shear crossbred wool types reached levels some 20 to 50 cents below those of full-length wools, but very dependent on length and micron. Crossbred bulky oddments
between approximately 1600 and 2000 cents per clean kilogram. With Australian wool sales during the same week taking a downwards turn after a couple of strong weekly gains, it appeared that perhaps New Zealand auctions had bucked the trend to some extent, however I guess as we enter the fine wool selling season proper we will find out how extensive the demand is for fine wool in general. Because ewe numbers have dwindled significantly during the past ten years in favour of a variety of land use options other than sheep, there is a guarantee that wool quantities will remain low for the foreseeable future, unless farm returns for lamb meat improve substantially enough to reverse the trend. Although wool values ‘across the board’ are currently at levels more attractive than they have been for a number of years, net wool returns on a per head basis remain challenging for sheep farmers and are, therefore, not significant enough to influence any realistic flock increase. That’s my view.

Deer test reveals backend booty Deer that grow faster, with larger eye muscles and bigger tails may well result from the findings of the Deer Progeny Test project. After three seasons of measuring, weighing and assessing, AgResearch has completed the physical work. Now their research team, led by Geoff Asher and Jamie Ward, is busy crunching the massive amount of data they’ve gathered. Initial analysis shows high genetic variability between deer for weaning weight, 12 month weight, primal cut yield, tail size and several factors relating to skin quality. These traits are also highly heritable. With high variability and high heritability it is possible for farmers to select for them and make rapid and permanent improvements in herd performance, much as they have done in recent decades with antler weights and style. The DPT involved 24 red-type maternal sires and 11 wapiti-type terminal sires and 1,647 of their progeny, of which 950 were slaughtered to measure venison traits. More than 150 traits were measured on each animal, ranging from their tolerance of parasites to the taste of their venison. As a result of the study, farmers may soon be able to make a direct comparison between red and wapiti breeding values but for now it means that if you are buying fast growth rate terminal sires, “pick the tops”, says Asher. “While the best wapiti grow faster than the best reds, there is too much overlap between the top reds and ordinary wapiti to select on breed alone.” Also interesting are the factors that won’t be worth selecting for because of a lack of variation, low heritability or both. These include carcass dressing percentage, drip loss and pizzle size. For farmers to get the benefits of selecting for eye muscle area (EMA)

and tail size, processors will need to pay their suppliers for these attributes. But it will probably be worth the extra effort. For every 100 grams of extra loin muscle added to each carcass, $1.1 million is added to export revenues, with a potential gain of $8.8 million a year from selecting for this trait for several generations. But, as Asher points out, there is a limit to how far you can go with selecting for this trait. With tails, the heaviest 10% are worth an average of $49.60, while the lightest 10% are worth $23.60, a $26 difference that could potentially be captured, assuming the end market continues to pay a premium for size. A method of measuring tails on live deer would also have to be developed. In the meantime, there’s plenty that farmers can select for and reap the rewards. For example, the heaviest 10% of weaners in the DPT weighed 64.9kg and the lightest just 44.1kg, a value difference of about $73 based on this year’s weaner sale prices. The heritability for 12 month weight is even higher than weaning weight and was reflected in a massive 33kg

The rate of genetic improvement for liveweight in Deer Select is more than four times faster than it was 20 years ago,” says Ward.

Loyalty has its own reward The resumption of Russian imports of hydrous milk fat, whey and milk protein concentrates from Fonterra sites is good news for the cooperative. New Zealand is not on the list of Russian-banned countries and in spite of trade minister Tim Groser asking primary exporters not to exploit any possible advantage that Fonterra and others may have in dealing with Russia, the government has stated that it is important not to upset trade talks with the United States through the TransPacific Partnership and also with the European Union. New Zealand has a history of being a good and loyal trading partner not only to Europe but also the United States, but there are numerous examples where this loyalty has not been taken into account, when Europe and America act in their own self-interest. For more than 100 years, New Zealand’s butter and cheese had arrived in ports in Britain. During the Second World War, New Zealand supplied its dairy products under very favourable terms to the so-called mother country. This trading relationship changed
dramatically with Britain joining the European Community, forcing New Zealand to look for alternative markets throughout Asia, Russia and latterly China. The then NZ Dairy Board showed commercial enterprise by taking advantage of the then Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s new open ‘perestroika’ (reconstruction) and ‘glasnost’ (or openness) policies giving new trade opportunities throughout the world. Mikhail Gorbachev’s ties stem back to the Ukraine or Little Russia, along with other Russian leaders including Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Chernenko. The Ukraine has been part of Russia for over 240 years, when Catherine the Great reached a peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire in 1774. The Crimea Peninsula which is part of the Ukraine came under Russian rule in 1783 and is a major naval base for the Russian Navy. The region’s vast wheat fields have served as the breadbasket of
the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union. The current American and European embargos against Russia are because the Ukraine wants to secede from Russia, with American and European support. An interesting argument could be made — what if Hawaii, a state within America, wished to secede from the United States. Would the Americans be so accommodating if it meant giving up their naval bases there? Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey who is the Dairy Companies Association chairman, stated in the press last week that the industry had no intention of ramping up trade with Russia as a result of the latest reinstatement of licences or any future relaxation of market access conditions and that the Association supported the Western Alliance led by America. With the greatest of respect, the facts are that while European and American dairy farmers are receiving between

In economic terms our situation is ridiculous and completely unsustainable. They profit while we stand naively by. It is hypocritical that we are told that we shouldn’t take full advantage of our unrestricted access to market our dairy products to Russia. Scottish-born Tim Groser who has acted as New Zealand’s chief negotiator in trade for many years, once summarised that New Zealand could be screwed in areas of trade. Almost everything New Zealand exported was at the mercy of other countries. It is ironical that in the book Till the Cows Came Home, Mr Grose reportedly states that to him, the key issues involved getting a framework for international law that would protect New Zealand from what he regarded as outrages. Wealthy nations had to be stopped from ruining the country’s economic future with their export subsidies — even if a measure of quota constraint and import control might have to be accepted for some time to come. It is my view that America and Europe should have kept this in mind when they unilaterally decided to place a trade ban against Russia to the detriment of small, agricultural-reliant countries like New Zealand.

It’s a trend in modern utes — when the core product reaches a certain stage in its shelf life, manufacturers take out the pad and paper to give it a facelift. Sometimes a rummage through the parts bin adds bigger wheels, beefier suspension, roll bars and nudge bars and acres of lamps. There are already two utes on the market which have followed this formula, tagging themselves with a permutation of AMG-Mercedes’ marketing speak. The Toyota Hilux Black Edition and the Holden Colorado Black Edition shamelessly borrow the chic of the howlingly mad AMG Black Edition sports cars, famously spine-pulverising Nürburgring attack dogs designed to make already loopy AMG-tuned Mercs into weapons of speed-limit destruction. Now another German brand has picked up the Black Edition fever — though their proximity to Mercedes HQ has seen them change the terminology slightly. The Volkswagen Amarok Dark Label edition tweaks the popular ute with the addition of a little bit of everything a dab of style with huge alloy rims and alcantara trim, a touch of sports-car DNA from the company’s Golf GTi heritage with a fat steering wheel and carbon fibre accents, and a whole lot of serious off-road truck bling in the form of matt black steel bars, steps and blindingly powerful bi-xenon headlights.

Standard Amarok was already a contender for top ute — now it’s been given the Dark Label treatment
There’s even an under-ride guard to protect the underbody and drivetrain. So far so good, and the Amarok is a competent ute on which to build this Dark Label monument. Euro priced, but definitely Euro specced, the Amarok can safely have its name uttered in the rarefied company of the Hilux and Ranger. VW have also added heated seats to the Dark Label, which plays into a pervasive way of thinking about what is, at it’s core, as much of a rough and tumble working man’s ute as any Japanese or American offering.
If a traditional ute is like the workman it serves, then the Amarok has the cachet of being a bit like that other guy on the worksite — the one who wears boots and a hard hat, but who also wears a shirt and tie. Sure, he might have a bigger pay cheque and drive home on heated alcantara, but those hands never get dirty. A shame in this analogy, because many Dark Label Amaroks will share the same fate. Supremely confident and well set up utes which may never see an hour off the tarmac.

In all forms of motorsport, the kind of ‘blue sky’ design and development used to dominate the racetrack fulfills a practical purpose for more prosaic application as well. Those advances in weight saving, safety, power and handling engineered to provide podium finishes filter through to the workaday vehicles which make up the bulk of any marque’s stable, in turn spurring sales and generating enough company revenue to tackle another gruelling year of high-speed autosport. It’s very much the same for today’s modern off road machines as it is for those road cars which have brandname brothers in WRC and Formula One competition. Big races can make or break products, and occasionally whole companies. And nothing tests drivers and machines likes the insane Baja 1000, a race which traverses some of the most rugged desert in Mexico. This race made the names of both Mickey Thompson and Ivan Stewart, and in 2014 it was the proving ground for a field of 19 ‘class 19’ UTVs. Only eight would finish, with a one-two through the gate going to Polaris RZRs. Lessons learned on the anvil of desert sand would be taken back to the lab to create even more powerful, durable machines. So we can now welcome the Polaris RZR
1000 XP ‘White Lightning’, a formidable four wheel drive, 110 horsepower, double overhead cam missile which takes on the turbocharged Maverick at the top of the UTV table. It’s an exercise in superlatives, with more power, 110 horsepower used to be road sports car territory not long ago. Longer suspension travel, better cooling systems, and more grip to provide what Polaris are calling their smoothest ride ever. Truly, this is a machine which demands your full attention for a test drive. Beyond the smoke and velocity, the RZR 1,000 XP carries a serious message for the rest of the Polaris bloodline. It’s a simple one. If Polaris can manufacture a machine to conquer the Baja and trails from Canada to Kathmandu putting down all those horses and taking the tough knocks, then their farming and hunting range just slightly down the power band must share that engineering know how. That bodes very well for Polaris overall. If you feel the need for extreme off road speed, the evidence of those podium finishes speaks for itself.

Versatility is the key to success for tractors in the hotly contested 100–150 horsepower segment, with the ability to cover a wide range of tasks on the farm proving popular, as savvy farmers invest in a ‘swiss army knife’ approach to their machinery. Kubota have taken this ethos a step further than most with their latest M-series tractors, delivering a range of machines spanning from 100 to 135 horsepower which are as adept at feeding out to the herd as they are undertaking cropping operations. Rather than being focused on one particular form of primary production, the MGX 135 and its little brothers down the HP range are designed, like the old dependable tractors of yesteryear, to
simply go where they are needed. Aside from the bulletproof nature of Kubota’s low-emission diesel mill under the hood, this has been achieved largely through clever design. Vet practice that was suffering from a shortage as well. Whether that was a shortage of young vets or a reluctance to move out of the city I am not sure. The great thing is that organisations such as Rural Women New Zealand are very aware of the Doctor shortage and are working very hard on reversing the problem. As a bystander I am a bit confused that more vets aren’t in rural practices. When you meet someone like Sam Taylor who is one of the Rangiora Vet Centre vets, he has a great lifestyle. He does the work that he loves and has a small holding not far from the ‘office’ so he can literally go home and train his eventing horses when he gets a gap in appointments. His groom gets a TXT to ask her to prepare a horse for exercising and he indulges himself by enjoying what he wants to do in his private life while still enjoying his professional life. So why don’t young doctors see what he sees?

There is obviously a shortage of medical professionals in the rural areas and it has to be addressed. There are few options as young students finishing medical school seem to want to stay in the cities and the lime light, rather than the lifestyle of rural practices. It’s interesting that a Christchurch GP spent a lot of time discussing the situation with a retired farming mate of mine and asked him what he thought was needed to attract young doctors into rural practices. One suggestion the GP made, was that rural communities fund the last couple of years of the interns study period on the condition that they sign up for a set time as a GP in the area. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be many answers to the shortage of medical folk for small towns. Strangely it seems vets are quite happy to move into and set up in country towns, apart from those who want to specialise in small furry animals rather than the bigger ones. I am prepared to be corrected on that comment as I seem to remember talking with a fast expanding
