Campbell McCowan was one of the winners in the Environmental Leadership in Land Management category
Farmers, conservation volunteers, schools and their students, grass roots community groups and corporates were among the 17 award winners. Taranaki Regional Council chair David MacLeod said people could be confident about the future of the region when they look at the calibre of the winners. “They’re all working to protect and improve our precious environment because they know it’s the right thing to do. That’s something for us all to think about,” he said. “Here in Taranaki, we’ve made good progress in preserving and restoring our environment. However, it doesn’t happen on its own. It needs the whole community to take ownership and take action. Our winners and everyone who was nominated for this year’s awards have stepped up to the challenge. They deserve our gratitude. “Their efforts remind us that Taranaki is blessed with a can-do attitude. We roll up our sleeves and get stuff done. When I look at our award winners, and all those who were nominated, I’m confident about the future of our region.” FIVE YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT HAS ARRIVED!

TARANAKI FARMING LIFESTYLES
Low methane emissions in ram selection
With ram buying season underway, commercial farmers are the first in the world to be able to include low methane emissions in their selection criteria. A research breeding value for methane emissions, launched in November 2019, was the outcome of a 10-year breeding programme. The programme was funded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand levy payers through the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGGRC) and the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre. Two closed flocks ran side-by-side; a low methane emitting flock and a high methane-emitting flock. These selection lines were created through methane screening of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand central progeny test flocks, and AgResearch’s Woodlands research flock. AgResearch scientist Dr Suzanne Rowe has been leading the research programme. Dr Rowe said on average, they have created a difference in methane emissions between the two flocks of 11% each unit of feed eaten. However, most importantly, it appears there is no difference in the health, productivity or profitability between low or highemitting sheep. “We are seeing more lean growth, carcase yield and wool production in the low methane sheep without any negative trade-offs.” This breeding programme, which confirmed that methane emissions were heritable, allowed for the establishment of a research breeding value for the trait. It was incorporated into the

Sheep Improvement Limited database last year. Stud breeders have been embracing the opportunity to measure the methane emissions in their stud animals through AgResearch’s portable accumulation chambers. Southland ram breeders, Leon and Wendy Black, were amongst the first commercial stud breeders to invest in measuring methane emissions and generating methane emitting EBVs in their Blackdale stud rams. Leon said as a ram breeder; he is breeding now for his clients’ needs five years down the track. While as yet, there are no economic incentives or market signals for breeders or commercial farmers to breed low
methane sheep, he believes it is just a matter of time. Leon believes genetics are the most effective way of meeting the sector’s emission reduction targets. “The most cost-effective way for the sector to reduce its emissions is to lean that way and breed animals that produce 10% less methane. “It takes time, but you’ve got to make a start, and I learnt a long time ago that you are more likely to improve something if you focus on it than if you don’t.”

the farm. The piggery was developed, growing from 40 sows to 150, then to 250 and finally to a 400-sow piggery. It now produces 11,000 pigs each year. A sharemilker managed the 270-cow dairy farm until the herd was sold in October 2018. It has provided more land to grow crops. Although pork production is the farm’s main business, cropping and beef fattening have added two more income streams. Ron said the farm now runs 120 beef cattle. “Beef steers and heifers are purchased as weaners and marketed at 600kg steers and 550kg heifers live weight. “Effluent from the piggery is a major nutrient resource for the farm. “Minimum artificial fertiliser has been applied to the farm for the past 20 years,” said Ron. “We are now managing the extra nutrients by transferring off the farm, the crop products. The farm contract grows 31ha maize, and sells 650 bales of haylage and 800 bales of hay to local
farmers.” Other crops are continually looked at and considered. However, finding the most suitable crop to grow on the farm’s west coast location is difficult. The strong family involvement in the farm continues through each generation. Noel and Ron, now in their 60s, continue to work part-time on the property. Ron takes care of the accounting and business side while Noel is out on the farm. “Noel’s son, Karl, is replacing us as overall managing the farm,” said Ron. “His special ability is developing and growing the cropping side of the business. He also assists at the piggery, which is the main business of the farm.” Piggery manager, Leon White, has three staff members assisting him. Two employees look after the farrowing and weaner area, while another assists Leon with the breeding and grower herd. Ron said the team all help with different aspects of the farm when required. During the 70 years, the Stanley family has owned the farm, they have

The new technology is paying off in terms of productivity and animal welfare. “We are in the process of developing a plan to cover our effluent pond and using the methane that is produced from the pond, to provide electricity for
the piggery.” Protecting and caring for the natural environment is a priority too. A significant wetland area in the nearby sand dunes has been fenced and planted. Riparian planting has also been completed. The Stanley brothers were finalists in this year’s Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards. celand was Laura’s first destination, working on a sheep farm in the Icelandic Highlands during the summer. An offer to train showjumpers in Canterbury followed, so Laura travelled to New Zealand. “I wasn’t expecting much to be honest, as I didn’t know a lot about the country and neither about the farming industry,” said Laura.
“The horse job turned out to be a disaster, so I left pretty quickly and decided to go someplace where I would feel more like at home. I made a call to my now, host mum, and she made me feel warmly welcomed. She was genuinely worried about my wellbeing and offered me to come up to Taranaki, and give it a shot on the farm.” Laura took up employment as a farm assistant

on Kevin and Elizabeth O’Sullivan’s 174ha-effective property near Eltham. Their son, Simon, manages the farming operation, milking 530 Friesian/Friesiancross cows. “I was only meant to stay for a week, and then until Christmas, and then until my visa would run out. Finally, we applied for another visa.” Last year, with the encouragement from her employer Simon, Laura started a Primary ITO apprenticeship and completed Level 4 New Zealand
Certificate of Agriculture (Dairy Farming). As a young child in Germany, Laura showed symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Her mother, a psychotherapist for children, implemented elements to help Laura focus and support her creativity while balancing high-energy needs. Laura has discovered farming is an ideal career, spending most of the day outside with plenty of physical work. “So while there are challenges every day, I also smile every day when I’m out

on the farm, out in the wind. I see birds and native trees, how the grass grows and how we work with the fascinating natural process of growth to turn the green stuff into the white stuff. “Of course, there is also my love for animals. I have to say that our cows make me laugh every day. ‘They make me swear too though, but I am happy to be able to make a living from spending my time outdoors with some of the toughest, smartest, bravest animals there is.” Rearing calves, then milking them two years later, are just some of the highlights Laura has found working in the dairy industry. She also finds satisfaction in watching animals, grass and crops grow. She has come to learn of the challenges associated with farming too. “Farming never stops. Every farmer knows there’s always the one animal that runs the wrong way or that tractor that breaks down at 6.30pm on a Saturday night, and you can’t just leave it. “That is by far, what makes farming most challenging for me. However, it also reminds me at the end of the day, how much I am capable of, how much I can endure and how much I can push on in order to get to where I want to get eventually.” Laura has learnt the
importance of keeping up a social life away from the farm for balance as well. Temperatures in the district range between 1C–26C and the O’Sullivan’s farm receives an average annual rainfall of around 1,100mm. Between 90–100 tonnes of grass silage is harvested on the farm, and roughly 155 tonnes of maize silage is fed out. Turnips are grown on 13ha and break fed during the summer dry period. “Last season we produced 235,732kgMS. This season, as of October 14, we have done 73,327kgMS.” Laura is planning to return to Germany in the near future, travelling via Argentina to compete in The Adventurists’ Gaucho Derby. “I am grateful for the time I got to spend in New Zealand and how warmly I got welcomed into the industry. Dairy farming has provided me with perspective and skills that are going to be very useful in my life. “What I will take from this farm though is something my boss said a while back ‘You will always farm the way you learned to farm at the very start. I still farm like the people who employed me in my first-ever farming job’. “I can gladly say that this is definitely something I will take with me when I go back to Europe: the Kiwi way of farming.”

TO STATION’S SUCCESS BY DENISE GUNN BLUE DUCK STATION OPERATES AS A SHEEP AND BEEF FARM, CONSERVATION PROJECT AND TOURISM VENTURE, ALL INTERTWINED WITH SUSTAINABLE PRINCIPLES.

stablished by Dan Steele in 2005, the station covers 7,200 acres of steep, challenging hill country in the Kaiteke Valley, bordering the Whanganui National Park. Dan began buying properties surrounding the farm belonging to his parents, Richard and Rachel, following his return from an OE in 1999. These properties, along with leasing Retaruke Station from his parents, form Blue Duck Station. Dan and his wife, Sandy, met through the tourism industry. The couple and their team of passionate workers run
the farm, tourism activities and ongoing conservation projects. The station, located on the banks of the Whanganui and Retaruke Rivers in the Ruapehu district, is also home to approximately 30 blue ducks (whio). Dan and his team have undertaken a massive task to re-establish wetlands around the farm and fence them off from stock. They’ve put in the hard yards with earthworks, fencing and planting. Trapping and maintenance continue. “Establishing wetlands and planting natives around the waterways will help

The farm receives an average annual rainfall of 2,000mm. “It’s summer-safe but can have lots of storms and slips,” said Dan. “We have a couple of frosts in winter, and it can reach early-30C in summer.” Small, conventional bales of hay are grown on the farm, along with baleage for calving heifers and lighter cows on the flats. Blue Duck Station’s back-country terrain attracts visitors from all across the globe. When Dan first formed Blue Duck Station, he built a six-bed lodge on the banks of the Retaruke River. He said this has quickly grown from six beds to more than 100, with a range of activities available for guests, and a cafe. “The next stage is a fine dining restaurant and luxury cabins on the top of a ridge.” Dan has gone into business with British chef, Jack Cashmore, to

create a unique ridgetop, fine-dining experience. Views from the ridge, one of the highest on the property, take in protected bushland and mountains. The restaurant, Chef’s Table, is set to open on Friday, January 8, 2021. The bushland has proved to be an asset. Not only does it prevent erosion, but Dan has been able to tap into the manuka-clad hillsides to produce honey. This year, Blue Duck Station produced 49,000 kilograms of highgrade manuka honey. Conservation is central to Blue Duck Station and continues to dictate each decision they make. “You can’t do conservation work for a while and then stop,” said Dan. “Otherwise, the situation will go back to where it was within a couple of months. This is an ongoing project for us, so I can pass this land on to future generations with pride.”

Dan and his team work hard to trap predators using sustainable trapping and hunting practices. Around 400 certified humane traps and 1,500 bait stations are used on the farm. Rats, mustelids and feral cats are the main predators. In further efforts to reduce their environmental impacts, Dan is working with Avalon Genetics to breed a sheep requiring minimal chemical inputs. “We are aiming to breed our ultimate sheep to suit the environment,” said Dan. “If they have a bare tail and belly that will mean no docking, and minimal dagging, dipping or drenching will be required.” Dan said this would mean less work for the team and the sheep will essentially be able to survive out on the steep, wild hills on their own. Since Ngati Ruanui iwi purchased the mountain house in May 2010, the property has undergone extensive renovations. A new cafe, restaurant, bar and kitchen were all installed at that time, prior to the reopening in February 2011. Managers Peter and Alie Mischefski took on their roles at the premises, officially named Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House, earlier this year. “It’s very special to Ngati Ruanui, giving their people a close connection to the maunga they hold so dear.” Top-quality chalets await guests at the mountain house with options from eight double rooms, a twin room and a family room, which sleeps four. Each chalet has an ensuite with spa bath, television, tea and coffee-making facilities, and parking space. The accommodation is situated just a short distance from the warm, cosy cafe, bar and dining room. Head chef Shelley Macfie and her team prepare top-class meals for diners at the restaurant and the cafe. A vast selection of cuisine options, New Zealand wines and other drinks feature on the restaurant menu. While dining in the restaurant, guests can look out at views of surrounding native bush and

birdlife. Pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks, including coffee, are available in the lounge area too. Casual dining is open for all in the restaurant and cafe, however, preference for dinner bookings is given to house guests. Dining areas are open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am for breakfast, lunch, snacks and evening a la carte dining. “The mountain house takes pride in giving friendly, high-quality service,” said Peter. The Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House is also the perfect venue for weddings, conferences and other events. “Giving warm, friendly service with a smile, ensuring our guests
can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the environment is our aim. Judging by the feedback we get, this seems to be happening.” Bushwalks of varying lengths, from 15 minutes up to three hours, cater for all levels of fitness. Some of these walks start and finish at the mountain house. As visitors step outdoors, they are enveloped in serene stillness, punctuated by native birdsong as tui, kereru, korimako (bellbirds) and miromiro (tomtits) are seen and heard. Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House is located 14 kilometres from Stratford.

Livestock export update
The Ministry for Primary Industries has introduced new requirements for the safe transport of livestock by sea as a result of the tragic loss of the Gulf Livestock 1 in early September. It follows an independent review into the animal welfare assurances MPI receives from exporters, led by Mike Heron QC and supported by retired Rear Admiral Tony Parr. “It will introduce several additional requirements for the export of livestock until the incoming government can make decisions about a wider policy review of the trade,” says MPI director-general Ray Smith. “We have moved quickly following the Heron review to ensure no serious animal welfare issue for the 24,000 cows in pre-export quarantine, which would likely have to be slaughtered if interim measures weren’t put in place. “We want to ensure they are moved safely. It is important to note New Zealand does not export animals for slaughter but as breeding stock. The Heron review found New Zealand has robust checks and balances in place, to ensure the welfare of livestock transported by sea, but MPI can strengthen parts of the Animal Welfare Export Certificate process. “We are committed to ensuring crew and animals on livestock export boats are safe.” Cabinet has introduced a
conditional prohibition until November 30. “Immediate changes will apply for the conditional prohibition period. They include focussed maritime inspection of livestock carrier ships entering New Zealand to transport livestock by Maritime New Zealand as an additional safeguard. “Restricting stocking density on vessels to 90 per cent of current limits to match new Australian standards. Increased requirements for voyage reporting, including daily veterinary reports during voyages and increased minimum fodder requirements that ensure at least 20 per cent of feed is available for unplanned delays during the voyage.” Rear Admiral Tony Parr says livestock vessels operate according to international rules and certification, but additional New Zealand-based checks by Maritime NZ should provide extra safeguards for vessel safety. During the conditional prohibition period, MPI will have the discretion to consider applications for AWECs for livestock exports by sea. Approval for AWECs will not be granted for livestock shipments unless all requirements have been met.

Cartilage loss by John Arts
Osteoarthritis is all about loss of cartilage, subsequent inflammation and changes to bone and joint structure. The result is pain and loss of mobility. The ends of bones such as the femur are covered in tough, flexible articular cartilage. It may surprise that despite its tough appearance and texture, it is 80% water, which acts like a shock absorber. Cartilage is a combination of living cells, the matrix they produce, plus water. These specialised cells are called chondrocytes, and their job is to secrete and maintain cartilage. They repair small amounts of damage as it occurs. Osteoarthritis starts when chondrocyte cells die, causing the cartilage to breakdown. While there are several things that can damage chondrocytes, in most cases these are a combination of free radical damage from insufficient antioxidants and biochemical changes caused by trauma to the joint. While the triggers vary, the outcome is chondrocyte death and cartilage loss. It is then followed by unwanted inflammation in the joint capsule that further damages cartilage. Eventually, the bone itself becomes compromised,
and the net result is more pain and restricted mobility. Nutritional therapy can help, especially in reducing inflammation, slowing the rate of cartilage loss and improving the function of existing cartilage. For example, therapeutic levels (800+ mg) of chondroitin can have significant effects on the health of chondrocytes and therefore, cartilage protection and repair. Glucosamine also helps maintain cartilage while curcumin from turmeric helps reduce inflammation and fluid accumulation. An ex-builder contacted me two years ago with significant knee pain from advanced osteoarthritis. An orthopaedic specialist had recommended knee replacement. Two years on a personalised joint health programme and he now has very little pain and no longer needs surgery. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz.
