Farming insects for food

by Denise Gunn

Keeping sustainability and upcycling in mind, Aaron and Melissa Jacobson have developed their rural Eltham property into a diverse ecosystem and haven of food self-sufficiency.

Aaron and Melissa Jacobson with their three children Lucas, Cohen and Alinka-Jean

The couple always wanted a small amount of land to try to work towards selfsufficiency. Eleven years ago, they moved to their three-acre property and began to develop it. Melissa said the property was like a blank canvas, with steep paddocks and erosion issues near the house. “There were no gardens, not even the usual backyard lemon tree. The grey water and septic system was a shambles. Early on, we established where gardens and orchards would be best, but our plans have been continually evolving ever since.

“We started with planting a small orchard area and built some terrace garden beds, partly to help retain a steep hill that led right up to the house.” In addition to the numerous features developed on the property, the couple has completed earthworks to build a shed where they can start commercially farming insects. “We have the breeding trays ready for mealworms and will be able to get that going next year. We also plan on farming locusts.”

Small herd makes big records

Cliff Shearer’s dairy farm may be small in size compared to others, but his pedigree Jersey cows have set New Zealand and international records for milk production.

Cliff Shearer’s Glenbrook Jersey herd has been recorded as the highest-producing Jersey herd in New Zealand numerous times

In 1982, Cliff bought a third of his family’s Normandy dairy property, naming his farm Glenbrook. He bought his first pedigree Jersey cow, Lamorna Sultans Minerva, at the annual Lamorna sale in 1979. “Lamorna Rovers Brenda, the founder of my ‘C’ family, was purchased at the Lamorna annual sale in 1980,” said Cliff. He said 95% of the Glenbrook herd is still from his ‘C’ family, all descending from Brenda. The Glenbrook herd has been intensively line-bred back to the

‘C’ family, which has helped intensify the herd’s continuing high production. In 2021, the small Glenbrook herd was recognised by Jersey NZ as the highest-producing herd in New Zealand, with 667kgMS for each cow. Starview May Alison S3J EX was the second highest-producing cow in New Zealand with 906kgMS. The herd has now been recorded as the highest-producing Jersey herd in New Zealand 14 times and holds the current herd average record of 701kgMS a cow.

Lame cows and other stories

by Denise Gunn

A collection of stories and experiences from Neil Chesterton’s 50-year veterinary career has been compiled in a book written by his wife, Sandra.

Veterinarian Neil Chesterton with his wife Sandra

It was at the suggestion of a careers adviser at high school in Australia that Neil considered studying to become a veterinarian. On visiting a rural practice, Neil was hooked. “Here were big, friendly animals living in the great outdoors, depending on the vet to keep them healthy and happy. Their owners were also friendly and had time to chat,” said Neil. Neil graduated from the Sydney University Vet School in 1974, married

Sandra, and obtained a position at the Inglewood Vet Group. Calls from farmers for Neil to visit lame cows have featured throughout his veterinary career. He began investigating lameness issues, recorded the data and his research has been published numerous times. Neil, Sandra and their children have also lived in Pakistan and Afghanistan, visiting vet clinics and delivering supplies. Sandra’s book, Lame Stories from the Vet from Inglewood, was published last year.

Many benefits of wetlands

A wetland built by Taranaki dairy farmers Philip and Donna Cram on their Awatuna farm is helping DairyNZ to encourage farmers to understand the environmental benefits.

Philip and Donna Cram on their Awatuna dairy farm

Constructed three years ago, the wetland is a collaboration between DairyNZ, the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) and the Taranaki Regional Council (TRC). It’s one of six constructed wetland demonstration sites being studied until June 2024. NIWA and TRC are monitoring the performance of the Cram’s wetland to remove nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment and E coli. Installation of the monitoring systems was funded by DairyNZ. Philip and Donna milk a herd of 270 predominantly Friesian cows on their

117ha (107ha effective) property. With the addition of a leased run-off, the couple planned to increase their herd to 290 cows. Philip and Donna wanted to do their bit for biodiversity, stream health and water quality. “There is a need for more wetlands, and I believe constructed wetlands could be a great answer through full catchment plans and could be a more acceptable answer to farmers than the current legislation with very descriptive wetland definitions,” said Donna.

Lowdown on Lowlines

An easy calving ability, fast growth aspect and ease of handling initially drew Sandy Moore and her late husband, John, to the Australian Lowline.

Sandy Moore in the show ring with Quintessa

The couple looked at a few small breeds before settling on Lowlines. “We didn’t want anything carrying a dwarfism gene which I think some of the breeds that are classed as miniature do,” said Sandy. “Our young daughter was very keen to get involved. It was her wish to show them as a 10-year-old.” Their first Lowline, a three-year-old in-calf heifer, arrived on the family’s Eltham property in 2004. Five months

later, the Moores bought a bull calf, eventually giving the family’s Triple M Stud their first crop of calves. During the years, Triple M Stud has expanded and now runs a senior bull, several cows and youngstock. In addition to Sandy and her daughter Katherine, a third owner, Tylah Cooper, has entered the stud partnership. “Our door is always open for anyone who wants to view the cattle and learn more about Lowlines,” said Sandy.

Farming with family

Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year Blake Cameron’s love of farming began at a young age, growing up on the family farm.

The 2023 Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year Blake Cameron

Blake said his parents, Hugh and Christine, always had him and his three older brothers involved on the farm, working with bikes, tractors and animals and enjoying the variety farming offered. Although Blake considered a career as a diesel mechanic, he thought university looked more appealing. He graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. “My first actual job was driving tractors for a local contracting firm and seeing a variety of farms out there.”

Blake’s agricultural science degree led him to a role at Vetcare Grazing, where he was involved with managing dairy replacements. “Then the opportunity came up to go home, and although I loved my job at Vetcare Grazing, I didn’t know when the opportunity to go home would come up again.” Blake also won the Dairy Trust Taranaki Pasture and Feed Management merit award. “It’s an industry where it’s hard not to want to be a part of,” he said.

Long days for log loader

Winner of the 2023 inaugural Golden Loader Forestry Championship, Daniel Purcell, grew up around the industry.

Poultry passion

An interest in poultry as a teenager led Sharon Stevens to breeding and showing her own birds all over New Zealand.

Inaugural Golden Loader Forestry Championship winner Daniel Purcell

Daniel’s father used to drive logging trucks and whenever he had the chance, Daniel tagged along with him. Since starting out in the forestry industry at 17, Daniel has driven a loader, learning on the job. He now owns a Tigercat 865, and established HCD Contracting two years ago. “I used my initials and my two daughters’ initials in the business name,” said Daniel. Currently, Daniel is working as a subcontractor for Clint Newland of CJ

Sharon Stevens has shown her poultry around New Zealand

Newland Logging Limited. Early starts are part of the job, and Daniel’s working day begins at 2am. Throughout the day, Daniel is at the helm of his Tigercat 865, either loading logs on to trucks or stacking away timber cut by the processor. “We usually work 12 to 14-hour days,” he said. “It’s pretty good. I like it because you are busy all the time. There are good people in the industry, and everyone gets on.”

Sharon bred Khaki Campbell ducks in her teens, but her love for poultry was reignited when helping a competitor prepare birds for the Taranaki Poultry and Pigeon Club Show 10 years ago. “Silver Spangled Hamburgs and Plymouth Barred Rocks were my first poultry. Just a trio of each,” she said. “I was lucky enough that two breeders, seeing my enthusiasm, gave really excellent birds to me. Most breeders are so happy to help people start up or improve their breed.”

More than 90 birds are now under Sharon’s care on her Lepperton farmlet, along with 35 miniature horses and an assortment of other animals. Sharon spends around an hour each day tending to her poultry’s daily requirements and tries to keep her birds free-ranging as much as possible. Each year, Sharon breeds her own chicks from her birds and enjoys seeing each generation coming through. In addition to the day-to-day enjoyment Sharon gains from her poultry, competing in shows is another highlight.

The Irish connection

Irish connections remain firmly embedded in south Taranaki’s soil, where four generations of the Bourke family have worked on their dairy farm.

by Denise Gunn

The 2023 winners of the Taranaki Regional Council’s Environmental Leadership in Farming award, Glenn and Lynda Howatson, have achieved their goal of developing a sustainable property.

Glen and Lynda Howatson won the 2023 Taranaki Regional Council’s Environmental Leadership in Farming award

The couple began farming their 196ha Huiroa property around 10 years ago, starting out with dairy heifers, sheep and beef cattle. Glenn said since then they’ve increased dairy heifer numbers and gone out of sheep and beef. “We run approximately 400 dairy heifers from May to May. Then, we take on approximately another 150 dairy weaner calves from December to May, grazing for dairy clients. “The sheep and beef country has either been retired or planted in pine

trees, and we’ve planted the gullies into natives.” Six wetlands were identified on the eastern hill country farm, and the couple began to take steps to protect these, creating habitat for flora and fauna. The planting process started about seven years ago. “We’ve progressively planted year-onyear and fencing off, so we would identify a wetland area and fence that off.” Glenn and Lynda have since planted more than 7,000 riparian plants and fenced hundreds of metres of waterways.

Kieran Bourke with an Ekochute Manual hoof trimming crush

The farm, Bourke Clonlara, was established by former accountant Geoff Bourke after he returned from the second world war. Geoff named the farm in memory of the farming village of Clonlara in County Clare, Ireland, where his grandfather JJ Bourke lived before immigrating to New Zealand. Geoff’s grandson Kieran is now the third generation of the Bourke family to farm the property, along with his wife, Claire. Their three children also help out on the farm. The couple bought the 116ha Pihama farm from Kieran’s parents, Paul and

Bernadette, in stages. When they made the final payment on the remaining part of the property in 2018, they also bought the herd from Paul and Bernadette. Nine years ago, Kieran and Claire purchased another farm, Kaupok, near Manaia, milking a herd of 700 cows. Last year, the family travelled to Ireland. While there, they viewed the Ekochute Manual hoof trimming crush, manufactured by an Irish company Eko Hoofcare. Kieran bought five Ekochute Manual hoof trimming crushes, installing two on the Bourke family’s farms.

Polocrosse passion fits with farming

by Denise Gunn

Working as a shepherd and training his polocrosse horses on the family farm ties together well for Jack Kinder. The Kinder family own two home blocks, covering a total of 3,000 acres between Whanganui and Ohakune. Another 1,400-acre block is farmed halfway up the Paraparas. “These are where we run 7,000 ewes and 800-odd steers,” said Jack. On lease blocks, which are mostly scrub, the family runs 1,000 cows and another 4,000 sheep. Keeping the horses fit for polocrosse can be challenging at times. However, riding them out on the farm to check stock and muster is a huge help, particularly when covering the tougher terrain. “Being able to hack them up and down the big hills knocks them into shape pretty quick,” he said. Jack plays for Te Mata Club based in Hamilton and has represented New Zealand in the NZ Juniors, NZ Intermediates and NZ Men’s teams. He plans to carry on the high standard of farming set by his parents. “I want to build on that and aim to put the same, if not more, into the farm.”

Award winners building future

Pastures, stock and profitability have been the main focus since Jacques and Vanessa Le Prou began transforming two rundown dairy farms into one sustainable unit.

The couple bought the farms 10 years ago as an equity partnership with a 50% share. Sharemilkers were employed for the first couple of years before doing a full conversion, merging the properties to become Java Farm. A new cowshed was constructed along with effluent, feedpad, troughs, fences and water lines. “We started this at the high $7/$8 payout and then had to finish it in the $3.90. So it was quite turbulent times with a farm that was inefficient due to an old herd and poor pastures,” said Vanessa.

Jacques and Vanessa now milk up to 420 Friesian/crossbred cows on the 165ha (140ha effective) Opunake farm, producing 450kgMS a cow. The Le Prous were last-minute entrants into the Ballance Farm Environment Awards, and to win the regional supreme title came as a surprise. “It has been a good time to look back on the goals we set and see that 90% of them are achieved. It has spurred us on to think about what needs to come next.”

Dairy Training Limited, a subsidiary of DairyNZ offers two free short courses in Taranaki, starting in February. Since 2002, the training organisation Dairy Training Limited, rated as a category one institution by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), has delivered courses to New Zealand dairy farmers. The tutors are farmers who understand the challenges faced by those working in the dairy industry. The first of the two courses offered in the region, Progression Management, is ideal for experienced farm assistants and aspiring managers. Course tutor Donovan Croot is a 50/50 sharemilker who has been farming in Taranaki for 15 years. Donovan started as a farm assistant with no experience and worked his way through the ranks. “There wasn’t a course as exciting as this available in my day. It’s engaging and modern. It covers so much that is relevant to young farmers because farming has become so complex,” said Donovan. “A course like Progression Management is important because financial literacy is key for a successful farming career, along with communication skills — even on small-scale farms.” Topics such as interacting with and managing people, analysing current farm performance and finding opportunities for improvement will help shape competent and effective managers.

Connecting with the land Restoring biodiversity, planting trees and controlling predators has become part of the Roper family’s dairy farming journey.

Collating a century of stories

This block is now classed as a key native ecosystem and will be protected under a QEII Trust covenant in the near future. The Ropers worked their way up the ladder to buy their farm in 2006. They continued sharemilking until 2016. “In 2016, we moved on to our own farm after about 20 years of sharemilking. We worked hard and made a number of sacrifices to achieve that ultimate goal. It was preservation and dedication that really got us there,” said Damian.

Sons of British seamen training at Flock House in the 1920s

The origins of Flock House trace back to New Zealand’s wool industry. During the first world war, all wool was classed as a war commodity and sold at a fixed price to the imperialm government. Towards the end of the war, the wool surplus sold on the open market fetched higher prices. Until one year after the war ended, New Zealand wool growers received a fixed average amount for their wool. Growers and the government equally shared the profits. The New Zealand Sheepowners’ Acknowledgement of Debt to British

Seamen Fund was created with the surplus profits. Part of the fund was used to support the widows and children of sailors in Great Britain. The remainder funded the passage of children of British sailors who had been killed or disabled during the war and their subsequent agricultural training in New Zealand. Alasdair Bettles-Hall is collating a shared history of Flock House. He wants to hear from descendants of Flock House trainees at flockhouse.nz.

Successful start to dairy career

by Denise Gunn

As a single mother, starting a new career in the dairy industry while raising a toddler was Jacinta Kete’s biggest challenge.

The 2023 Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year, Jacinta Kete, with her son Arlo

Now, the 2023 Taranaki Dairy Trainee of the Year has set goals to advance further. Growing up on a sheep and beef station in the Waitomo region gave Jacinta Kete the incentive to set her sights on a farming career. She started out shepherding and working as a wool handler on leaving secondary school, then milked a large herd of goats for a season. Two years later, following a relationship ending, and with her oneyear-old son Arlo to care for, Jacinta moved to Hāwera and took up relief

milking. After six months of relief milking for Johnny and Kathy Mullin, Jacinta found she coped well with the early mornings and repetitive work. During the 2020/2021 season, Jacinta worked as a farm assistant for William Myers and Melissa Goble. The following season, her employment was split between two farms, working for John and Kristina Wyatt and Phil and Donna Cram. Jacinta now works full-time for Phil and Donna on their 117ha, 270-cow Awatuna farm.

Sowing seeds grows business

by Denise Gunn

After taking the initial steps to sow vegetable seeds on their lifestyle block, Glen and Peri Kovaleski have gone on to establish and grow their business, Jordalee Creek. Glen and Peri are involved in the main day-to-day work on their property near Stratford. Each day, the couple walk around the gardens, taking note of weeds to pull and to check on the growing stages of their vegetables. Soil temperature and pH levels are also monitored. The vegetable garden takes up around a quarter of an acre and there are plans to further expand the growing area. All vegetables are grown from seed and sold as either seedlings or fresh produce. “We do bulk orders from Egmont Seeds and Kings Seeds, depending on what we are after. We prefer heirloom as we can let a plant go to seed and can continue to grow from this without buying more seeds,” said Peri. Vegetable and seedling sales are made through regular customers, markets and the busines s’s Facebook page. “We never dreamed this would go as far as it had. It’s a comforting feeling of accomplishment to be able to feed us, our families and our community.”

Rural scenes inspire

Harnessing awareness of racing

While travelling the back roads of rural Taranaki, photographer and painter Mark Bellringer is capturing the landscape through his camera lens and on canvas.

People, ponies and paperwork were the main steps behind getting Taranaki Kidz Kartz up and running.

Taranaki Kidz Kartz meet weekly at the Hāwera Racecourse during daylight saving

The education organisation began in Auckland before branching out to Taranaki, Waikato and the South Island. Kidz Kartz has now become a popular, permanent fixture on the harness racing scene. Local trainer, the late Keith Chittenden, along with enthusiasts Michelle Taylor, and Brodie and Costa Ellis established Taranaki Kidz Kartz eight years ago. Brodie is a licensed Standardbred racehorse trainer with a small team in New Plymouth.

He employs Costa as a licensed stablehand. Brodie said the main aim is to get more people involved in harness racing and raise more awareness of the sport. Commitment to the wellbeing of ponies is a top priority in conjunction with developing a well-rounded horse person. Children between the ages of 7 and 16 are eligible to join Kidz Kartz, where they will learn how to drive safely on the trotting track and take part in club nights and fun race days.

View from the Strathmore Saddle captured on canvas

Mark grew up on his family’s farm at Tarata in the eastern Taranaki back country, and it was here that his interest in painting began. Although painting was put on the back burner when he headed overseas in his 20s, Mark picked up a paintbrush again in his late 50s. Meantime, his interest in photography evolved. Riding his trusty Royal Enfield motorbike, Mark tries to head out to Taranaki’s backblocks once a week to photograph and paint.

“All my personal photography is based around landscapes, and my paintings are the same. I paint both outdoors and in the studio and also take a few workshops,” said Mark. Mark likes to find interesting points of view in the ordinary every day. He paints in oils using the direct painting method, where the artist paints on the canvas in one sitting. “Although people will recognise the scene, I don’t paint exactly what is in front of me. You move things around to make the painting work.”

Science success for students

Surfing initiative makes big waves

After a successful first season, Surfing for Farmers Whanganui looked to hit the surf again last November.

15

Francis Douglas Memorial College Year 13 students William Poole and Flynn O’Sullivan won the Ballance Agri-Nutrients Scientific Investigation award for their Regenerative Agriculture Misadventure project at the 2023 WITT Taranaki Science and Technology Fair. This award acknowledges students who showcase a strong understanding of current or potential sustainability concerns impacting New Zealand’s primary sectors. Ballance Agri-Nutrients judges science fair projects that research topics including greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural chemical usage, nutrient run-off into waterways, and other environmental issues. Regional Ballance representative and nutrient specialist Shaun Broderick said he was very impressed with the projects entered into the agri-science category this year. “Flynn and William’s work was well thought out and demonstrated an impressive level of critical thinking. They should be very pleased with themselves,” he said. For two years, William and Flynn assessed the differences between regenerative agriculture and conventional

farming by comparing soil tests and earthworm numbers and conducting visual soil assessments on the school farm. Both students come from farming families and always had an interest in how effective regenerative agriculture is.

From left: Whanganui Young Farmers members Baylee Hodges, Charee Redington and Hannah McMillan ready to hit the surf

The mental health and wellbeing initiative, launched by Stephen Thomson in Gisborne in 2018, has since spread to 28 coastal regions around New Zealand. In those five years, more than 4,000 farmers and growers have taken part. Surfing for Farmers national coordinator Sarah Shanks said SFF gives farmers and growers the opportunity to step away from what can be an all-consuming business. A group of committed Whanganui locals approached the national organisation in August last

year about holding the initiative in their region. “With the support of SFF National, the committee was helped with finding local legend sponsors and providers to ensure the first season, and beyond, ran smoothly. Sourcing the sponsorship can be a daunting task, but the committee raised the funds to ensure the season was a huge hit,” said Sarah. “The aim of establishing Surfing for Farmers — Whanganui was to provide an opportunity for local farmers and growers to take a break from their daily routine, relax and try something new.”
