of Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles… Welcome to the first edition of Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles — your new monthly paper, with a new local flavour. Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles is published by the 100 per cent locally owned, independent media company, NorthSouth Multi Media. We will be delivering to over 22,000 rural delivery addresses in your region. This new publication joins our stable of rural papers, Canterbury Farming, Northern Farming Lifestyles, Waikato Farming Lifestyles and also our weekly community publication, the Kaipara Lifestyler. Do not expect a technical farming paper, instead expect a people-focussed publication, packed with interesting stories and photos about the lives of people in your region. In this inaugural issue our features include Rural Women, Ask the Professional, Farm Wheels, and Hunting and Fishing. In coming months we will cover a wide spectrum of rural issues. In the following pages you will read about a new accredited equine course that will be run through the Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre and Panorama Equestrian Centre and prepare students a variety for equine careers such as racing or eventing. A gorgeous lifestyle story, with pictures to match, follows the lives of an Inglewood couple and their menagerie of exotic animals. Sustainable farming also makes its way into this issue and we talk to a Whakahoro farmer and conservationist

Industry needs met Shearing — by new equine course judges needed A new equine training programme aimed at meeting the industry’s needs for qualified employees will begin next June

Around 11 prospective shearing judges attended the training at Ian Rawlinson’s property at Pohokura, east of Stratford, early last month with another six people expressing an interest but unable to attend. “We were very lucky to get such a good response,” said Mr Mutch. Now living in eastern Taranaki he says the province has no active judges at present and this caused problems for competition organisers. Judges were needed for local competitions because reimbursement of travel expenses for those coming from outside the district was costly. Taranaki has had a strong history in shearing. The province has had a number of world champions and many Golden Shears finalists. Running the training were instructors and judges Mike Barnett, of Aria in the King Country, and Gavin Rowland, of Christchurch. The pair demonstrated judging techniques on freshly shorn sheep and showed trainees how to award points based on cuts and any wool remaining on the animals.

Gavin Mutch, is a member of the Scottish team who will compete in the world championships in Masterton next year.

Living the

‘Wildlife’

at Stoney Oaks

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

wenty years ago when Gail and Trevor Simons purchased a lifestyle block just out of Inglewood Gail thought her dreams had come true. An animal lover since birth Gail was keen to develop a purebred Highland cattle stud and Trevor looked forward to farming deer.

While there was plenty of work to do on the property it seemed simplistic — a nice hobby with the main source of income coming from Trevor’s building business. Several large oak trees and planned future stone work lent themselves easily

to the name and the couple set about indulging in each of their passions. But Gail’s hobby sort of grew — rare breeds and unusual animals not seen on the average New Zealand farm ‘found’ their way to the property and the variety of wildlife has been increasing ever since. Danish white red deer and the normal red deer (for Trevor of course), an American bison, a variety of rabbit breeds, miniature kune kune pigs, fallow deer, Nubian goats, Tibetan yak, Jacob patterned sheep, ferret, donkey, llamas and alpaca, chinchillas, guinea pigs, miniature horses, donkey, Himalayan

tahr, rare white peacocks, Highland cattle, ostrich, emu, pet possums, including a gorgeous gold one named Honey, and oodles of poultry are only some of the residents at Stoney Oaks. It may sound idyllic, but Gail’s little bit of paradise means hours of work and a hefty food bill of around $1,000 a month — and that’s just for pellets and meal! Then there’s the vet bills, the occasional heartache if a pet is sick or injured, the upkeep and dunging out of the paddocks. Stoney Oaks is a private park but Gail does open to the public on Sundays and during the school holidays as well as to schools, resthomes and kindergartens by appointment. It helps pay for the food bill and allows

Gail to share the pleasure with the many who visit. The Highland cattle and deer still remain the ‘farmed’ animals and the main source of farm income. The rare breeds are purely for interest with only a few being bred from. Most of the animal residents have their own special tale to tell of how they arrived at the park. At 20 years of age, Jessie a Hereford x cow is the oldest resident. She arrived at Stoney Oaks via son Paul, who while working on a local farm was given the induced seven-week premature calf to knock on the head. “She was such a gorgeous natured calf that she just wormed her way into our hearts,” laughs Gail. “She has been a great nurse cow to

something that needs doing around the farm. “We did get a new kitchen completed in time for the World Cup.” laughs Gail. Various stone work buildings and yards (thanks to Trevor and two builder sons) and paying guest accommodation add to the ambience of the place.

Work on the 130-year-old house has been an ongoing project since the family arrived at Stoney Oaks, but it is a labour of love — after all there is always

There is plenty to see and do, a nice bush walk, a lake to row on, cuddling and brushing the animals is encouraged — “it’s very hands on,” says Gail. Trevor has what is reportedly the largest native timber collection in New Zealand with over a hundred different varieties of timber lining the collection room. So would Gail swap this hectic lifestyle for a more leisurely pace? “Definitely not. It may be a hobby that’s gotten out of control, but its my passion in life,” she says.

Septic Tank Owners

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and

b blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Ron Simpson of Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.

Sustainable farming… it’s just good business

by Annette Lambly-Robinson Whakahoro farmer and conservationist, Dan Steele, says New Zealand should lead the world in conservation. He says generations of New Zealand farmers have been programmed to increase production each year and this has often come at the expense of the environment and needs to change. “Farming in a sustainable manner is just good business,” and by good, he means not just for the individual farmer, but also good for the farming industry and the ‘whole country’. Dan and his business partner, Luk Chin, own a 2,100ha sheep and beef farm and eco-tourism business on the northern end

of Whanganui National Park, an hour west of Mount Ruapehu. The farm is also home to an extensive conservation project and the Blue Duck Lodges — four accommodation lodges and activities hub named after the rare blue duck.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen Winter is a great time for bulk milk chilling systems, chilling water temperatures are low and milk volumes are small. It won’t be that way for long, summer will arrive and temperatures will rise, not the least of which will be the milk going into the Vat. I looked up the NZFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority) NZCP1: Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies. On page 38, 7.14 Milk Cooling it states: Milk must be cooled to 18 Deg C or less at the completion of the first milking into the bulk milk tank, and should not exceed 13 Deg C at the completion of subsequent milkings and milk must be cooled to and maintained at 7 Deg C or below within 3 hours of the completion of milking and kept at 7 Deg C or below until it is collected or the next Milking. This is a tough call for a lot of Dairies with Primary chilling water for some over 23 Deg C during summer and very ordinary chillers. It is a reality however that the Dairy Companies are toughening up around the Code of practice and quickly. The solutions are not cheap and cheerful, they have to be designed to suit the Dairy and the load to get the milk into the vat and maintained properly and be cost effective. No8 wire or “she’ll be right” isn’t going to measure up. At Milfos we have the iCONVERTER Chilling Solution that can Snap chill the milk into the vat at around 5 Deg C, maintain the Vat temperature and supply free Hot water up to 85 Deg C in abundance. It should save you around 35% Of your electricity costs. You don’t need to have a Milfos Dairy to enjoy the benefits, so check out our website www.milfos.com for details or a consultation.

Dan is passionate about conservation, tourism and farming. “Our business is about 50 per cent farming and 50 per eco-tourism. It’s a real study in how conservation and business can be tied together,” he said. “Tourism and farming both rely on our clean, green image, but if we could really achieve this — people would want to visit our country forever.” The Blue Duck Station group is involved in several conservation projects, blue duck preservation and historical building restoration. Priority is to work with stakeholders in preserving the area’s natural beauty while educating guests about blue duck, local native species and the history of the Whakahoro Valley. The blue duck, or Whio as it is known in Maori, is an endangered Dan Steele and canine mates outside a ‘conserved’ early settlers whare species and Dan is committed to Photo/Blue Duck Lodge helping to preserve this native fowl. The group is also involved in restoring He annually undertakes a largescale predator trapping and habitat buildings (now historical) that were enhancement project for the whio, kiwi abandoned by early farmers of the region. and all other natives of Retaruke.

Soil Matters — with Peter Burton

A quiet revolution underway

Dairy cows are amazingly tough and resilient animals with the majority remaining outdoors all year. Diets vary widely; most survive through harsh winter and early spring conditions, give birth, and produce remarkably well.

Some years ago a farmer in the Waikato drafted out his lightest cows in autumn, put them into a large covered shed and fed them almost entirely on kiwifruit. It wasn’t long before they gained weight and were reintroduced to the main herd without fuss for wintering. There are cows close to main centres that are fed waste produce from supermarkets that include a variety of potato chip-type products and a range of confectionary. Although I haven’t seem them I have it on good authority that these cows perform well by industry standards, with the intriguing part of this story being that a considerable amount of this ‘food’ is still in its wrapper. Dairy cows that die as result of a calcium/ magnesium deficiency or imbalance do so not because their diet is a little deficient, but because their diet is substantially deficient or imbalanced, and unsuited to the animal’s requirements for calving and early lactation. This is where a single annual application of dolomite can have a major impact. A single application of 220kg/ha provides 25kg of magnesium and 53kg of calcium per hectare, however it is what results that is important.

to see whether there is some other way the same amount of calcium and magnesium can be applied by mixing other products together, think about the soundness of the argument that cheapest is best. Think about your own farm vehicles. Were they the cheapest available when you bought, or was the main consideration their suitability for the work to be undertaken? Can the cheapest vehicle be relied on to perform faultlessly year after year? Soils are living breathing organisms and the health of our animals in spring is a direct reflection of the health of our soils. Continuing to apply the same soil nutrient package each year, with perhaps minor tinkering, enduring the same animal health problems each spring when there are alternatives that provide largely trouble free calving suggests flawed thinking. With the present value of quality dairy animals and the increasing payment for fat and protein this is the time to maximise health and performance by applying dolomite, proven to outperform all other calcium/magnesium options. For those still not convinced, buy 25kg bags of dolomite, empty them into a container where it can stay dry, make it available to the herd each day, observe and monitor. For more information call 0800 436 566 (0800 4 DOLOMITE).

The magnesium content of grass as a result of a dolomite application may vary from 0.22–0.25% depending largely on the amount of direct sunlight. Leaf calcium content usually measures no less than 0.60% as the calcium and magnesium release at the same rate. Dairy cows fully fed on grass with this Ca and Mg content receive sufficient to ensure Ca/Mg related metabolic disorders are minimised and production after calving moves rapidly toward its peak, provided rumen function is good.

Uplifting womanly assets creates niche business by Annette Lambly-Robinson

T

he adage necessity being the mother of invention was what prompted Horowhenua farmer Kylie Giddard to begin her own bra manufacturing business.

Seven years ago after coming home from another hard day’s work on the farm Kylie Gibbard found yet again she was rubbed raw by her ill fitting bra and decided enough was enough.

Kylie, Holly and Darrell

While Kylie had tried almost every brand there was on the market, including a few expensive imported bras supposedly specifically for bigger busts — she said none had solved her problems. Her partner Darrell felt there had to be something suitable out there — Kylie just needed to spread her search a little wider to find a brand and style.

Having always been a big-busted girl Kylie had had problems with brassieres ever since puberty.

Kylie went worldwide and found none she could ‘wear all day without pain and discomfort’.

“They caused me all sorts of trouble — from shoulder straps falling off, underwire rubbing on the ribcage or digging into my arms to under-breast chafing not to mention whenever I wanted to do anything physical my breasts would fall out the top of the bras,” said Kylie.

service bulls and growing specialist crops like fodder beet and lucerne. Apart from that Darrell also runs a small transport business which supplies and trucks wood chip to farmers throughout the southern North Island.

With a blended family of four sporting kids life was pretty hectic — Kylie had enough on her plate without worrying about her uncomfortable undergarments — but something had to be done to make her obvious problem bearable. “So with a bit of kiwi ingenuity and can do attitude we began a design process to create a prototype which would fill all my requirements.” After a few months of working on a pattern, they came up with ‘their’ shape, and had a seamstress friend make one for Kylie. It worked perfectly. Kylie had some comfort at last. In the meantime they heard of other women who have the same problem and the idea of having their own niche business — professionally making and supplying bra’s in a range of sizes — was born. “As farmers we’ve always been told to look at diversification — so ours is diversification to the extreme — from farming to lingerie,” she laughs. It wasn’t something that could be rushed. Three years later with the designs sorted they needed someone to make them.

Machinist, Jo, hard at work on the next ‘Natasha bra’

“Given the decline in the New Zealand apparel industry in NZ we thought it would be relatively easy to find a manufacturer keen to take on our new product,” said Kylie. They found out nothing could be further from the truth. “No one would take us seriously and they were not interested in making them — their attitude was that NZ doesn’t make bra’s anymore.” With typical rural determination they decided they’d just have to do it themselves. A further three years research, testing components and prototyping the ‘EmKay’ factory was born — right on their farm. A year later — apart from Kylie, EmKay now employs six staff and supplies almost 30 retailers nationwide. Exports to Australia are due to start this month. (October) “Since launching onto the market we have had a huge response from women of all ages, sizes and shapes telling us that at last our bra provides them with the comfort, lift and support they have been desperate for,” said Kylie. “This is wonderful and encouraging feedback.”

World-wide recognition for rural women

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

The United Nations International Day of Rural Women celebrates and honours the role of rural women. Held every October 15, the day recognises the importance rural women have in enhancing agricultural and rural development worldwide and the contribution they make in supporting their own communities. Their achievements are often inspiring, in the face of overwhelming adversities such as poverty, national conflict, violence, lack of education and poor health. The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on October 15, 2008. The idea of honouring rural women with a special day was put forward at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995. It was suggested October 15 be the day chosen because it is the eve of World Food Day — and it was felt this would highlight rural women’s role in food production and food security. World Rural Women’s Day had been celebrated across the world for more than a decade before it officially became a United Nations’ observance. This year’s theme ‘Enterprising Rural Women in the Pacific’ not only looks at the initiatives already in place, but ways in which New Zealand women can help their sisters in the Pacific. Rural Women New Zealand already help with a number of projects. Lily Besoer runs the Rural Women’s Development Initiative (RWDI) in Papua New Guinea. The scheme has several current projects including a scheme where women can save small

This scheme enables women to set up a small business growing vegetables for sale and livestock farming. The RWDI also runs a rehabilitation programme for internally displaced women refugees who are victims of tribal wars or gender-based violence. It is hard to believe in this day and age some women are still subjected to torture for alleged sorcery or adultery. The RWDI has also established three preschools and an empowerment programme which teaches sewing, and growing and marketing vegetables. The Country Women of Australia also offer skill based programmes to women in Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu. CWA fund two Tuvalu women to sewing training in Australia. The women share the learned skills by running sewing workshops back home with the future hope of travelling to outer islands to more remote communities. Saving lives together in Taranaki and beyond

11

How would you cope in an emergency? This is the question being asked by the Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter. What if there is no road access for an ambulance or another emergency service? There are many locations in New Zealand that are off the beaten track, in the high country, on a mountain, off shore or on a beach where access is extremely limited. Luckily, the Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter can help — they are your number one service for aerial rescues and searches. Particularly as accidents can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone of us. Last month, the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust welcomed their new machine, the Agusta A109 Power. This very capable machine has twin engines and winch or hoist capabilities of up to 600 pounds. When time matters, the professional helicopter team is on time and can be airborne in ten minutes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In just two weeks we rescued or transported ten patients, who all required urgent medical attention. For nineteen years, the team has worked tirelessly to provide a professional emergency service for people in Taranaki and beyond. Without them, there is no doubt lives would be lost. However, Taranaki Rescue Helicopter is a charitable trust that relies heavily on financial support from businesses and the wider community. “We can’t do it alone — come on board and support us. You never know when you might need us and we could even save your life,” says the team. View our website www.trht.org.nz.
