Awards provide worthwhile challenge Opunake dairy farmers Kenneth and Rachel Short found entering the Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards a great challenge. The equity partners and sharemilkers milk 443 cows on 180ha and are in the process of converting to a fully organic operation. Kenneth and Rachel first entered the awards in 2014, winning a category award. They entered the awards again this year and won three categories, including the CB Norwood Ltd AgriBusiness Management Award. This award recognises the approach that farmers take to accomplish the important management practices of operating a successful farm business. Awards judges praised the couple’s excellent use of agri-business professionals and their in-depth knowledge of business management and strategy. Rachel said good business management is very important to them. “We are always trying to fine-tune our system and with the payout at the current level, it’s even more crucial to constantly review what is happening inside the farm gate.” She said being involved in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards was an important part of the planning process. “It made us sit down together and take a good, hard look at what we had done and what we are trying to achieve.” The judging panel offered a broad range of experience and expertise, and the judging process was conducted in a relaxed and friendly manner. “I used to get very nervous about these things, but the judges are just

James, a former rugby representative player for Taranaki, initially became involved in the honey industry during a five-year stint playing the sport in Hong Kong. “I was playing rugby in Hong Kong and was approached by a large company,” he said. “I developed a passion for the industry pretty quick. Bees are fascinating.”It was around this time that James gifted a beehive to his father for Christmas. Toby found working with bees so enjoyable that a short time later bought 100 hives in partnership with James. Toby grew up on the family’s Waitotara Valley sheep and beef farm. and monitored for signs of American foulbrood disease. As Egmont Honey’s managing director, James takes care of the export and trading aspect of the business. In April, the company exported the first 10-tonne shipment of manuka honey to China. “The brand, Egmont Honey, is doing really well in the New Zealand market,” said James. “We also export to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.” Egmont Honey currently has 1,500 hives on the ground and that number is growing. Many of these hives are located in remote areas in south Taranaki and helicopters are required to lift them into manuka sites for the summer. “We try to work with three to four farmers in a row,” said James. “That way we don’t have competing beekeepers overstocking boundaries and the farmers benefit.” James said Egmont Honey will soon be cropping in Wairarapa and East Cape, followed by Taranaki. As the last flowering crop of the year, Taranaki is two months later than other parts of the country. The hives are wintered on a farm with 2,000 acres of bush. Egmont Honey’s bees are not used for commercial pollination and aren’t exposed to pesticides and other chemicals. “We recognise that commercial pollination is extremely important to the world’s food supply but the Egmont bees are fully focussed honey bees,” said James.

ENJOYING • BY DENISE GUNN • With a long and varied career in the agricultural industry, Kevin Bensemann is enjoying his retirement and keeping up with developments in the rural sector.

R

aised in a farming area on the Kaikoura coast, Kevin could often be found as a youngster helping out on local farms. His first mustering job, in his teenage years, set the course for his career in the livestock industry. “The manager of Bluff Station was short of somebody to take the shorn ewes back 50 miles to their home block,” said Kevin. “He approached my parents and asked if I could help drove the sheep.” On Kevin’s return, he continued mustering and shepherding around the district, along with work as a high country musterer in the Awatere Valley.

Following his marriage to Lynette, the couple moved to north Canterbury to work on a cropping farm for three years. A position as herd shepherd on Raumati Station followed and Kevin managed the 5,000-hectare property while the owner recovered from a heart attack. When the owner’s son returned from his OE, Kevin was rewarded for his hard work with a recommendation to Pyne Gould Guinness as stock agent material. “I got the job and was sent up to Blenheim and then I went to Seddon for quite some time. There were five different stock and station agents in Seddon, it was very competitive,” he said.

Kevin was often on the job up to seven days a week. “Sometimes I was on the phone up to 10pm, then at 5am off to sales. I enjoyed stock and always worked to achieve,” he said. Kevin was appointed head auctioneer in Blenheim in 1970, holding that post for 10 years. “I stood up alongside some of the best auctioneers in the country.” By 1980 vineyards started to appear in the Marlborough region and farm clearance sales became a regular occurrence as the land was sold for viticulture. Kevin and Lynette moved their family to Waverley where Kevin took up work as a livestock manager for Farmers Cooperative Organisation Society (FCOS). In 1983 he formed the deer division and was appointed company manager. When Australian company Elders came to NZ

Love of the rural life Growing up on a farm in my early years gave me a love for rural life. Exploring down the back paddocks, fishing for eels and crawlers in the creek, rearing lambs and calves, riding tractors and farm bikes, and climbing up trees and in haybarns could never be matched by a townies way of life. When I was a kid we could never understand how an All Blacks player could come from a city, compared to the likes of Colin Meads and Graham Mourie. Growing up in South Taranaki on both a farm in Waimate West and then in Hawera (as a townie), with

a short stint at New Plymouth Boys’ High School has given me a great grounding in Taranaki life. We are a proud, talented and resilient province that produce some of the best meat, wool and dairy, as well as other manufactured products. Today I have the privilege of representing the New Plymouth electorate, which is not just a city seat. It contains some of the best or rural New Zealand and its people. If I am your representative, then I am available to meet and discuss your concerns for a better New Zealand.

As head shepherd on Raumati Station, Kevin also managed the 5,000-hectare property for a while in 1986, Kevin was approached to be an area manager and start a branch in Taranaki. “I got five or six agents together and started Elders in Hawera.” In 1989, John Buxton, the CEO of Huttons, offered Kevin a position as the North Island livestock manager. Kevin took up the offer, working for the Huttons plant in Eltham. Huttons later became Riverlands and Kevin worked for the company for 20 years, the last nine of those as executive. He retired in 2008 but continued in an advisory role for Riverlands and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). “I saw a lot of changes in the meat industry over the years, with companies closing down and takeovers,” he said. Kevin said one of his career highlights

was involvement with stud sheep and selecting animals for live shipments to New Guinea, South America and Australia. He was also involved in procurement of live heifers to Korea and Angus cattle to Japan. Kevin and Lynette’s three sons all followed their father’s footsteps to work in the livestock industry for a time: Lindsay now has his own livestock business; former livestock auctioneer Phillip runs his own company, All About Auctions, in Auckland; and Chris is the Wellington central police area commander. Their daughter, Hayley, and son-in-law, Brendon, won this year’s Steak of Origin competition. “I keep an interest in the rural sector and guys I worked with often call in,” said Kevin.

Clean, Green and Sustainable When it comes down to rugby, Ireland have always been a strong competitor, however their wins against the All Blacks, although memorable, are minimal. But don’t worry about that. Over the past ten years, Bora Bia, the Irish food board have introduced a new marketing brand, “Origin Green”. This brand is described as a verifiable commitment to sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, involving farmers, processes and suppliers, aimed at reducing the environmental footprint. So it looks like Ireland, have not only stolen a march

on New Zealand, but also the rest of the world. New Zealand has always put forward our Clean, Green image brand, but that has been heavily tarnished over the years by overuse of chemicals, such as antibiotics, herbicides, insecticides, drenches and synthetic fertilisers etc which continues to keep us locked into commodity markets and low returns. There is something critically wrong with New Zealand’s obsession with chemical production, especially in a time when consumers are calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco friendly and sustainable manner. Ireland has stolen the march, but we can tackle them!! It is awesome to hear that you, the CEO — Landcorp, are looking at moving towards certified organic production. I enjoyed your comments, ”That there are people sceptical about organics in terms of science, but you cannot dispute the substantial premium, especially with dairy”. Having been on the organic track for the past 30 years, there is a myriad of books and journals, written by PHD’s and Professors expounding the science of the natural system. The chemical fertiliser science is based on a “NPK theory” put forward

Roksolid Full Spectrum Fertiliser

by Justus Von Liebig in 1840. It is not science it is just a theory! Von Liebig declared his theory to be false and in the United States Department of Agriculture, year book, 1957, it states clearly that the NPK Balance sheet theory is false, so where is the science ? Farming is a natural system, not a chemical system. The natural system works together with mother nature, who provides all the free natural capital needed for farming, such as topsoil, micro organisms, sunlight, rain, atmospheric minerals, carbon as carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, making up 97.5 % of the plants mineral uptake, all for free ! Plus bees and other pollinators, worms and manure recycled by animals, the list goes on. Current Agro chemical production is eroding this natural capital. We need to work with Mother Nature to restore this natural capital. Here at Agrissentials we are re-mineralising the topsoil and regenerating new topsoil through our fertilising programs. Our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, not only do this, but bring health and vitality back to the soil, which transfers onto plants, animals and humans, dramatically reducing sickness and health problems. The United

Oceans100 Roketlime Fish & Kelp Liquid Fertiliser

Rok & Lime Fertiliser

Nations, F.A.O. (Food and Agriculture Organisation), declared 2015 as the “International year of soils”, they stated that, ”Soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life spam!” Agrissentials dispute this and have recorded anecdotal evidence, using our own fertilisers on a Bio Gro certified farm, with 50mm topsoil on a clay base, we witnessed over an eight year period an increase in the topsoil of 250mm, ( Ralph Littles dairy farm, Ruawai, NI ). So bring it on! Organic farming is not only the future, but it is also the security and sustainability we need to continue enjoying our lives and our farming. The change from chemical production to natural certified production is very simple. All it entails is a change from synthetic, soluble fertilisers that are impacting on our environment, — to Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which enhance the environment. Past and current grazing experiments inform how best to manage pasture — and shows in a high milk price year that the first 85 per cent of the operating profit comes from the base pasture, 10 per cent from nitrogen fertiliser use, and the last five per cent from supplements. Past grazing experiments by Dr Arnold Bryant and the Ruakura team revolutionised the way pasture was managed through winter and spring. Following a series of ground-breaking trials in 1999, Mr Bryant and his colleague John Penno set up the 1.75t MS/ha trial, aimed at achieving 1750 kilograms MS/ha and investigating the costs. It measured the increase in per-cow and per-hectare milk solids production when total feed supply is increased by bought-in supplements and/or nitrogen fertiliser. A range of combinations were used to increase pasture growth with N supplements bought in and an increased stocking rate to use the extra feed. The results indicated it was uneconomic to add extra feed to a system with good pasture utilisation, unless the stocking rate was increased and cheap feed available.

Dr David McCall DairyNZ research and development general manager

DairyNZ research and development general manager Dr David McCall says the pasture/supplementary debate has been polarising and confusing for some farmers. “The pasture first concept is about managing pastures regardless of farming system. Modelling has shown that getting pasture management right is worth over $300/ha, even at today’s milk prices.”

Bobby calf changes ‘still needed’

New regulations aimed at improving the standard of care for bobby calves have now been in effect since last month, with the Ministry of Primary Industry recording that during the peak of the calving season for dairy farmers, improvements in calf welfare have been noted across the supply chain. The regulations which took effect on August 1 were part of an accelerated programme focussed on further improving the standard of care for bobby calves, a programme which was highlighted by media exposure earlier this year, which showed abuses in the industry both at a farm pickup point and in a slaughter yard. “Everyone across the supply chain has a role to play when it comes to the welfare of bobby calves. What we have seen and heard so far is promising and a majority of people are following the rules, but we have also noticed some people still need to change their practices to ensure all regulations are met,” said MPI’s director of Verification Services, Chris Kebbell. “We’d like to acknowledge the majority of farmers, transporters and processors who have always cared for young calves and are meeting the regulations with ease, but we remind the minority that they have an obligation to care for calves and they face infringement

fines or prosecutions if they don’t.” The four regulations introduced this season include fitness for transport requirements, a maximum transport duration of 12 hours, the prohibition on killing calves by blunt force to the head and the prohibition of transporting calves by sea across the Cook Strait. These regulations provide MPI with additional tools to respond to those who are not meeting their obligations for the welfare of calves. “The key area we have noted that could be improved by the minority is ensuring calves are fit for transport. Farmers should not rely on transporters to make the decision on fitness for transport, as farmers are in the best position to know the animals.”

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Posture of the hind legs There is a connection between the posture of the hind legs in rear view and the condition of the claws. Normally the hind legs are more or less parallel. It is hardly surprising that in the course of a few years the difficult task of the outer hind claws may affect the posture of the hind legs. When a cow stands and walks properly, there is less chance of the hooves being overloaded. The ideal cow makes optimum use of her legs and hooves; her body weight is distributed evenly over her legs and hooves. This does not happen in reality, as dairy cows tend to put most of the load on their outside hind claws, so that is where most of the problems occur. Heavy loading and contusion of the

quick in the outer hind claw will in the end cause sensitivity or pain. The cow will try to compensate for this by walking on her heels and by placing or turning the foot more outwards by adopting a base-wide or a cow-hocked posture, thus making the inner claw bear more weight and the outer less. This decreases the height of the heel, makes the angle of the front wall more shallow and causes the cow to walk with her hocks closer together. Such an adjustment of posture is frequently observed. Thus the posture of the hind legs of our dairy cattle is only partly inborn and to a great extent adopted. The latter is due partly to the unfavourable loading on the outer hind claw and to domestication, but probably for the greater part to the claw diseases that can afflict the claws. As a matter of fact, the effect of this adjustment of

Calf Rearing be a specialist Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

posture is relative: measuring shows that in adopting a cow-hocked or basewide posture, the cow relieves her sensitive outer claw of its overload, only to a certain extent. Mostly this claw remains more heavily loaded than the inner claw, albeit less than before. This must be ascribed to the difference in height. The longer-term effects of laminitis may eventually be seen as an upward rotation of the toe and a convex shape of the anterior hoof wall. Improving the weight distribution, together with restoring the foot to its correct shape and weight-bearing surfaces is the main aim of preventative hoof trimming. Due to preventative hoof trimming being very time consuming we have found that many farmers are recognising the benefits of contracting their trimming out to professional hoof trimmers, resulting in a reduction of severe lameness incidences in the herd and reduced lame cow numbers; thereby increasing productivity and bottomline profits.

RURAL WHEELS

Redlining with green power

ADVERTORIAL

Summers coming soon

Tractors, trucks and trailers, mowers and milking gear all took a beating this winter. Those using yesteryear’s ‘cheap’ products to keep corrosion out of tools and toys, paid the price.

Hybrid power has come a long way since the first Toyota Prius — the hybrid hypercar is here to stay

Hard to pronounce and even harder to beat — the Koenigsegg Regera (its name means ‘to reign’) is the current king of the mega cars. A bracket above even hypercars like the Swedish manufacturer’s old Agera, mega cars like the Regera, McLaren’s P1 and Porsche’s 918 use hybrid drive systems to blend petrol and electric horsepower into a volatile cocktail.

The Regera boasts 1,800hp in total, delivering approximately 1,500 at the wheels — neatly exceeding that of the now positively Victorian looking Veyron — and it does it all with a single gear, thanks to a whole new drivetrain architecture dreamed up by Koenigsegg engineers to prevent the wholesale destruction of clutch plates during testing.

Seized machinery, failing electronics and rusty sheds were the result, meaning expensive repairs and wasted time. Professionals know the best products are the most cost effective and fishermen note that the big boys like Hampidjan or Sanford Fishing use CorrosionX. Clever hunters have worked out that the CorrosionX they buy is what our own navy, coastguard and most air forces of the world use in their weaponry. The product is also helping power companies and wastewater works around New Zealand. These guys never settle for second best, so why would you? CorrosionX waterproofs electronics in the milking shed, keeps the rust out of hydraulic fittings and un-seizes wheel nuts and bolts on a logging truck faster than

you can eat your pie. Applied in seconds, even on wet or rusty surfaces, but with no limit on its shelf life, it will never go dry or sticky. Neutral on rubber and plastics, it is an extremely long lasting corrosion inhibitor, a super fast penetrant and three times better lubricant than engine oil. It is also MPI approved as C11 (same as lanolin), non-flammable and safe to 39,000 volts. Try its sister CorrosionX Heavy Duty for parts needing lubrication that often get submerged, like your boat trailer. Have a great summer with your toys and tools in perfect shape. To find your local dealers/ applicators or for more information go to www.corrosionx.org or call Corrosion Control NZ on 09 438 8800. FOR ALL METALS, EVEN WET AND RUSTY

CorrosionX is a super fast penetrant on corroded parts. On reassembly it acts as long-lasting protection and stops electrolysis. Airtools live longer with CorrosionX ! CorrosionX is MPI approved C11, ideal for the farm, fishing and public areas. Outstanding lubrication factor of 0,4. Never dries, separates or evaporates. Unlimited shelf life. Ultrathin application.

CorrosionX waterproofs old and new electronics/electrics in all machinery, trucks and installations. Safe on rubber, insulation, neoprene and all plastics. Safe to 39.000 Volt.

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid-

80s who had arthritis in her shoulder and hands. She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-year-old whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Blue for you Mark Hadlow is a Blue September ambassador and has a special message for our rural men. “I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure and I am amazed at the number of men who seem to think you don’t need the ‘blue glove check’ post 50 or even younger,” said Mark. “Yes sure the PSA blood test is a good start but why not go the whole hog and face your fear and get a check.” Mark says this is not scaremongering. “Too many rural men are diagnosed too late and when that happens, the outcomes are not good. Ask your doctor to do the check — it’s no big deal and can be a lifesaver. The relief and the joy of the knowledge of a normal prostate is outstanding and such a great feeling.” Mark says you owe it to yourself, your family and your stress levels. “My doctor and I joke about it — how to start your day with a surprise, a blue glove surprise. It’s not a laughing matter at all, however some men are too scared or anxious to do it and we need to help them. So really it’s up to the ‘blue glovers’ of Blue September to challenge a mate and say ‘face your fear’ and get relief. “There’s nothing brave in pretending that prostate cancer can’t happen to you. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed and 600 die each year from prostate cancer. Many of them could have been diagnosed earlier by getting gloved and had a much better outcome. park.” The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the testicles to the outside of the body through the penis. Prostate cancer is the presence of cancer cells or a cancerous growth in or on the gland. In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.

Wool for sleeping comfort VIP Beds — for Very Important Pets — has been making extraordinary wool-filled beds for 25 years from a small woolshed on the outskirts of Waipukurau, with very few days without orders. Ex-veterinary nurse, Barbie Cassidy, is helped by three saddlers and local women making three kinds of beds for dogs and two varieties of pillows for people (or passengers). What is extraordinary about these products is the process that the wool undergoes for her indoor dog bedding and pillows. Strong wool is blown through a centrifugal force to form bulky balls, which do not flatten and keep their shape and buoyancy for both dogs and people to enjoy. The wool balls massage naturally and the therapeutic effect helps alleviate arthritic pain in old dogs and acts as an arthritis prevention in young dogs. The VIP beds are oval nests, covered in tartan cotton and built on a base of New Zealand wool carpet. Mutt Mattresses are fat mats for dogs, ranging from a banana box bed for mini schnauzer, perfect for in the car or at home, to a Great Dane size. For working dogs and those kept out of the house, Tough Stuff double-stacked mats are filled with long fleece wool, designed to flatten. The only care needed is an occasional

hour on the roof of the kennel to dry out on a fine day. Testimonials pour in, attesting to the improved health and well-being of these hard working dogs. “The only complaint has been that the dogs do not want to get up in the mornings!” said Barbie. Prices range from $45 to $55 for Tough Stuff; from $45 to $250 for Mutt Mattresses and from $120 to $480 for VIP Beds. “It is money well spent on helping dogs live and work longer and more freely.” For more information, phone 06 858 9766, email vipbeds@xtra.co.nz or visit www.vipbeds.co.nz.
