In Flora and Fauna, Selwyn Gallery’s April exhibition, the beauty and fragility of New Zealand’s plant and bird life are highlighted at varying stages of their life cycles.

A Rolleston structural steelwork company has been fined $250,000 after a heavy steel beam fatally injured a worker at their site in 2017.

“We are pleased to show these striking works by three accomplished artists until Thursday, May 2,’ said Malvern Community Art Council chairperson Philip Baldwin. “Photographer Stacey Weaver is fascinated by photographing flowers when they have just passed their best. Pegasus Engineering Limited was sentenced at the Christchurch District Court. In the incident, a worker was moving steel beams from work trolleys using a crane. A beam destabilised, causing it to tip and fall toward the worker. The beam struck the worker across their left arm, the side of their torso, their neck and their head causing fatal injuries. The worker was 58. A WorkSafe investigation found Pegasus Engineering Limited did not carry out an effective risk assessment, and Pegasus did not consider there was a substantial risk of the beams falling over.

It did not provide workers with clamps to ensure heavy steel beams were secure while on work trolleys. Head of Specialist Interventions Simon Humphries said Pegasus Engineering Limited had not developed and implemented a safe system of work. “A worker has tragically lost their life because this company failed to carry out a risk assessment. “A proper risk assessment involves identifying and assessing risks, eliminating or minimising risk, then monitoring the implemented control measures and reviewing systems for improvement. It serves as a reminder to ensure proper safety procedures are always in place.” 

Relay for Life raises $50,000  by Mike Isle

This year’s Selwyn Relay for Life in support of the Cancer Society was a shortened version following an earlier postponement because of the mosque attacks, but it still managed to raise $50,000, and climbing, for the society. One of the organisers Emily Murdoch said the event was a great success, despite the postponement and chilly conditions. “We had an amazing turnout with around thirty teams, and our track was full for the six hours of the event. Many of the walkers took on the challenge of doing as many laps as they can, with one participant reaching 56 kilometres in the six hours, which is just amazing” she said. With many of the teams accepting the invitation to ‘costume up’ for the event, Brookside Park was a colourful site. Mayor Sam Broughton, who opened the event, even seemed to have his own security detail made up of Stormtroopers and other characters from Star Wars. Emily Murdoch said this year’s event had a special meaning for the society.

“It is the first event since we opened our new Selwyn centre. For many years we have been trying to achieve this and have been promising those at the relay that we will achieve it. “We finally reached this goal, and it has been made especially possible through the contributions of events like Relay for Life. “So, this year we celebrated that we have been able to achieve [the centre] and that the continued support from the Selwyn community through events like Relay for Life enables us to keep the centre open.” Although the event is over for another year, anyone still wanting to make a donation to support the Cancer Society’s Selwyn Centre should go the society’s website cancernz.org.nz/ and search Relay for Life. 

Plenty to get active about  by Mike Isle

Term two of the Selwyn District Council’s community recreational programme Selwyn Activities has started and is already proving to be a bigger winner than ever with record numbers of activities and participants.

 Christchurch’s Anzac Day Dawn Service will be held in Cranmer Square

The 10am citizens’ service will also still be held in the Transitional Cathedral in Latimer Square. Several smaller services are planned for throughout the Christchurch area, led by the RSA. However, a planned Christchurch City Council-organised event in Sydenham has been cancelled. It follows New Zealand Police requests to cancel or consolidate Anzac services to enable police to provide appropriate support to large gatherings, with heightened levels of security after the March 15 mosque attacks in Riccarton and Linwood. Council Civic and International Relations manager Matt Nichols said there would

be a visible police presence at the dawn service in Christchurch for the safety and reassurance of the community. “We recognise the importance of Anzac Day to so many people, so we’re working with police to put appropriate security measures in place to allow people to feel safe to come together and mark the day,” Nichols said. “If possible, people should not bring bags to the service to reduce potential delays when entering Cranmer Square.” Vehicle access will also be restricted around the area. The council is encouraging people to allow a bit of extra time to get to the dawn service and the citizens’ service. 

There are also new programmes at the district’s libraries. Besides this, there are also several other programmes run by external groups such as day clubs, sports clubs and art groups. The council’s community relations manager Denise Kidd said the programme met the needs of our whole community. “The programmes we run are aimed at being affordable so everyone can access them and from young people to older adults. Phil’s love of pipe bands began as a youngster when he attended Anzac parades with his father and the bagpipes take him back to his Scottish heritage champions and The Scottish Society are the Grade three champions. “I lived in Oban, Scotland for two years because I wanted to visit my ancestral homeland and joined a pipe band there. They have Remembrance Day on November 11, and that was an honour to attend. I went to the battleground and found the Cameron clan gravestone and played my bagpipes there, which drew an incredible emotion sense of belonging. “I am very grateful to have the privilege of playing at Anzac events. There is a great deal of pride leading the returned and present service people down the road as you honour them, celebrating and remembering them in a very special way. People talk to you with tears in their eyes and smiles on their faces.” The pipes provoke so many emotions and memories. “They remember their dad used to play, or how they used to march in the

We shall remember their sacrifice

army to bagpipes and drums. A pipe band has military origins, and we are very regimental in our structure and are lead by a drum and pipe major like the armed forces have sergeants and corporals. The instrument stirs up excitement and adds a sense of ceremony, dignitary and pageantry to events — the Queen Mother’s funeral had 1,000 bagpipers lead her away from the church. “I love playing at funerals — it honours the person and their family and adds dignity. I traditionally pipe the casket out of the service and lead the hearse away from the venue and often play at the graveside. At armed forces funerals, people wear their uniforms, and other people wear medals. They often place poppies on the casket, which is draped in the New Zealand flag. They stand at attention and pay respect and the pipes are so appropriate to send them off to. I have played in conjunction with

a Maori cultural group at a funeral and played the casket out of the service to the Last Post whilst a haka was being performed outside. “It is an incredible intertwining of cultures, which are very similar, Maori have tribes, and Scottish have clans. “At Anzac parades, the current day soldiers are similar to the guards outside Buckingham Palace, and there is comradery when they come together with the older generations. The older band members always turn up for Anzac. “I believe it is New Zealand’s day. Leading the soldiers down the road with the New Zealand flag waving while the national anthem is playing with everyone gathered together can be sad but we are grateful for the sacrifices people have made so we can live the way we live now and playing the bagpipes is an absolute honour.” Find Phil the Piper on Facebook if you are interested in learning bagpipes. 

Arthritis and your pet by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Arthritis affects one in five dogs and one in three cats. It is a common condition vets see in practice but may be difficult for owners to recognise. Arthritis or degenerative joint disease is a joint problem that causes pain and reduces mobility. Arthritis could be caused by developmental problems, previous injury, infection or even the immune system. Normal joints consists of cartilage acting as a protective cushioning between

two bones. With arthritis, thinning of the cartilage along with joint fluid buildup and the formation of bony growths within the joint occur. Over time, pain and reduced joint mobility result. Signs of arthritis include and are not limited to: • stiffness after exercise, • difficulty getting up, laying down, walking, climbing stairs or jumping, • wasting away of muscle • limited movement • joint swelling • grating sound of a joint or just being quieter than usual It is sometimes difficult to recognise arthritis in cats and dogs as they don’t

tend to complain about their aching joints and owners assume the signs of arthritis is ‘normal’ in older animals. It is recommended that you take your cat or dog for yearly checks; this can help your vet identify these signs early. X-rays can also help identify arthritic bony growths and joint abnormalities. Arthritis is a lifelong condition; however, it can be managed. The most important thing is to keep your cat or dog slim thereby reducing the load on its joints. Talk to your vet, and they’ll be more than happy to come up with a slimming program for your pet. Monitored exercise on soft surfaces can help. Swimming is also a great exercise for arthritic dogs. You may have already noticed that arthritis is aggravated by cold and damp. So keep your pet warm and dry. Coats and padded beds can help. Warm compresses can soothe sore joints also. Massage helps increase your pet’s flexibility and circulation, and you can do that at home, ask your vet for some instructions to help you get started. Many joint supplements are available for dogs and cats and form a useful part of arthritis management. Pain medication is often prescribed to help relieve signs

but make sure they are prescribed by your veterinarian because many human pain relievers are poisonous to animals. Other aids in the management of arthritis include acupuncture. It is painless and has shown some success in animals. Ramps instead of steps, flooring that is not slippery and a warm, soft bed all help in the management of arthritis. Prevention is always better than cure! Regular moderate exercise and a high-quality diet can help manage your pet’s body weight, keep your dog or cat’s musculoskeletal system in good shape and help delay ageing. Ask your vet to recommend a diet and exercise programme that suits your pet and your lifestyle.

Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming

Super-sized seven by Andy Bryenton

Did you know that Holden, the renowned motor brand, began as a saddlery in the 1860s? James Holden was stitching leather in Adelaide before the car was even invented. Which means he was a man who’d appreciate just how comfortable modern vehicles have become. One, which bears his name really stands out as Holden enter a new era of global supply and reach, thanks to the power of parent company General Motors. The new seven-seater Acadia wears James’ monicker, but actually comes all the way from Tennessee. To use a phrase from that part of the world, the interior space of this technically advanced and comfortable seven-seat family cruiser is ‘as big as all outdoors’. Three rows of jet-black leather seats, the front two boasting heaters can be moved about for ease of access, and rest assured, the back row is not simply for show. You’ll also find all the electronic gadgets, which a family wagon demands, including the addition of wireless phone charging to free up a total of five USB ports for the kids’ tablets and games. Comfort is definitely the order of the day, which may seem counter-intuitive when talking about a machine from the United States heartland, where it wears the GMC badge alongside big, boisterous pickup trucks. Moreover, there’s a big difference between the Acadia and the other large SUV in Holden’s range, based on the Colorado. The 3.6 litre v6 from the ZB Commodore just fits with the Buick-derived nine-speed transmission and adaptive AWD system to provide

That quiet is achieved with advanced noise cancelling technology, making the cabin an even more relaxing space away from the maddening traffic. Unlocking the potential in property

Bridget Henderson has always wanted to learn more about her Scottish heritage, and thanks to the highly sort after NZ Young Farmers exchange with the Scottish Association of Young Farmers she will travel from the South Island to fulfil her dream. The 25-year-old helps on her family’s 280 cow dairy farm and works at the nearby Farmlands store. Her adventure begins in June, and as part of the experience, she will attend the world-renowned Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. “I will stay with a number of rural families and gain a broader understanding of their agriculture and the challenges faced by the country’s agri-food producers,” says Bridget. “We have hosted several young farmers from Scotland, and I am excited to experience the things they talked about. People say there are strong similarities between the two countries and I am hoping there might be some useful practices I can bring back to the South Island. “We also have sheep, and I want to gather as much knowledge about cropping, sheep and beef, dairying and grazing units as possible. My longterm goal is to become a technical field adviser or an independent farm consultant.”

Fortuna Syndicated horses have won 26 of their last 66 starts in NZ – an amazing 39.3% winning strike rate. Yearling Colt Sired by Australian speed sensation DEEP FIELD and from a Female family replete with Two Year Old success — this Colt, nicknamed “CASSIUS” — presents as a Genuine 2020 Karaka Million Opportunity. Selector’s view — David Ellis “John, you have done well here — I was doubtful that you could get this Colt for your budget, he is from an “all speed” Australian family — I gave him a high rating and thought he would make a lot more than you paid for him — to my eye, he looks ideal for the 2020 Karaka Million Two Year Old race.” Trainer’s view — Jamie Richards “John, you told us you wanted to buy a Colt that had the attributes of an early Two year old type that could be aimed at the Karaka Million. This boy ticks a lot of boxes, he is strong, very well put together, has a great walk and I can see that he is just the type of Colt that will be broken in early, trial at the early season trials in August, then commence his racing career on a path toward the Karaka Million next January.”

Nicknamed “CANDY” this Filly also has a strong Two Year Old winning family and presents as another “get up and go” Two Year Old type Selector’s view — David Ellis “I really rated this Filly because of her type and her pedigree. She is physically correct, has a great walk, lovely head and eye and is exceptional value at this price.” Trainer’s view — Jamie Richards “John, you have bought another lovely Filly here, she is a medium sized, very attractive physically Filly, whom I could not fault. She is from a high class family and I believe she will be an early runner as a Two year Old — definitely one that I would be targeting toward the Karaka Million.”

Winning the Karaka Million is all about selecting the right type of horse – they must be early maturing types who will just get up and run as Two Year Olds and both Cassius and Candy certainly meet that criteria. As well as that, our Trainer, Jamie Richards, knows just what it takes to win the Karaka Million, having enjoyed unblemished success in that race these past three years.” Both Yearlings are eligible for the Karaka $1,000,000 Two Year Old Race run in January 2020 and the Karaka $1,000,000 Three Year Old Classic run in January 2021.
