Sefton takes over top spot

Defending champions Sefton leapt to the top …

The 11-year-old has just received his first call up to a national squad and will represent his country at the Oceania Archery Youth Championships, which will be held in Selwyn next month. Ellesmere Archery’s home base at Osborne Park in Doyleston, where Ryley learnt his sport, will play host to the championships on March 10 and 11. The Rolleston Primary School student, said it was special to get the call-up

to the national team. “It is something I have been aiming at for a while,” he said. Ryley fell in love with archery after shooting his first arrow at a ‘Have A Go Day’ event hosted by Ellesmere Archery in Southbridge, just over three years ago. “We saw an article in the paper about the have a go and we went down, and it all started from there.”

“We have been using Feedmix Calf Meal on our farm for 5 years. We find that our calves take to Feedmix a lot easier than other products . Dave and Stew are excellent to work with.” Graham Thomas, Hinds.

Since then, Ryley has represented Ellesmere Archery at three New Zealand Nationals bringing home a large number of medals for Clout and Target events. Clout is distance shooting at a target lying flat on the ground, while target shooting is at upright targets. He currently holds in excess of 15 national records. continued on page 4 …

This year’s collection will take place on Friday, 16 and Saturday, 17 of March, during Child Cancer Foundation Appeal Month. Child Cancer Foundation chief executive, Robyn Kiddle, said dedicated volunteers are urgently needed to donate their time and help raise vital funds, so Child Cancer Foundation can continue to support more than 1,700 families nationwide in hospital, at home and in the community. “There are collection sites nationwide and just a couple of hours out of people’s days will make a huge difference,” she said. “We are grateful to anyone who can spare a couple of hours to raise funds to help Kiwi kids with cancer and their families. “Schools or businesses can also ‘adopt’ a collection site in their local area for one or both days and involve staff, students and parents in this event.” People interested in volunteering as collectors can register at childcancer. org.nz or call 0800 424 453 to be connected with their local organiser. 

Concern over The long walk motorway development  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn MP Amy Adams is expressing concern at the impact the second stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway is having on West Melton’s roads. Stage two of the Christchurch Southern Motorway extension (CSM2) is currently under construction. The extension is expected to halve travel time between Rolleston and Christchurch at peak times and reduce fatal and serious crashes. “While I am a huge supporter of CSM2, I am worried about the impact it is likely to have on Weedons Ross Road, and the intersection of Weedons Ross Road and State Highway 73,” Ms Adams said. “Given that this intersection is already very busy, I am concerned at how the inevitable further increase in traffic volumes will be managed,” Ms Adams said. “Weedons Ross Road is not designed to cope with this amount of traffic and, given that it runs past Weedons School, the safety of children and parents needs to be considered also.” Ms Adams, who lives in West Melton, met with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to discuss this matter, but said she was disappointed to learn that the NZTA had not carried out specific transport modelling on these roads. “Of even more concern was the apparent fact that the traffic volume data being used by NZTA had not been

updated since 2000, despite this area experiencing some of the fastest growth in New Zealand during the intervening period. “This leaves West Melton residents and drivers who commute via this intersection daily without any assurance that there is an adequate plan in place to manage the growing traffic volumes at this location, and mitigate health and safety risks for drivers and pedestrians.” NZTA Regional Relationships Jim Harland said they are aware of the increasing issues at the Weedons Ross Road/SH73 intersection and have been monitoring traffic growth. “This has firstly been driven by the growth of West Melton but also with the interconnection to the Christchurch Southern Motorway stage two, Rolleston and Lincoln via Weedons Ross Road,” Mr Harland said. “The Transport Agency is proposing an intersection upgrade in the next three year transport programme to improve safety and access, in response to the residential development and traffic growth occurring there.” 

 United States exchange student Connor Flechsig, centre, poses for a photograph with Lincoln University Association President James Ranstead, left, and a Residential Assistant from the Halls of Residence after his 1,470km walk from Auckland to start the university year in Lincoln. Flechsig, of Colorado State University, arrived in Lincoln on Friday night, after starting his journey along the Te Araroa Trail in Auckland on December 29. A keen hiker, his idea of ‘walking to school’ came about after he realised that the trail was located near Auckland Airport. Back home in California, Connor’s parents tracked his movements on a Google Earth Pro map. Flechsig says it was the experience of a lifetime, as he had the chance to meet many friendly Kiwis along the way and enjoy the ‘stunning scenic trails’ on both islands. He will spend the semester at Lincoln University as part of the LincOE exchange programme.

THE RECORD

Uniting our communities  by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

As I am sure many of you will be aware, I have put my name forward to contest the leadership of the National Party. I have received many messages of encouragement from people here in Selwyn, and further afield, and I would like to thank you all for taking the time to offer me your support. I am standing because I believe I have the compassion, intellect, integrity and experience to be leader of the party and return the National Party to government in 2020. We’re fortunate to have a talented caucus with a great balance of fresh energy, leadership and experience. One thing I believe John Key and Bill English did well, was to build multiple layers of leadership in the party. This means we have exceptional depth and capability, and I want to further encourage and draw on this for the benefit of New Zealanders. My aim is to unite the many communities and differing views in New Zealand, from urban to rural, conservative to liberal.

Pay attention!

As a result of my background, I believe I am well placed to understand and bring together these diverse communities and views. I was born and raised in Auckland, growing up with a single mum, before moving to Canterbury to train and work as a lawyer, marrying my farmer husband, bringing up two children here in Selwyn and spending six years as a cabinet minister. Our country deserves strong leadership and real solutions to issues such as economic growth, housing and helping our most vulnerable, which the current government has yet to prove it can tackle. I believe that I have the skills and experience to tackle these issues and make progress for all New Zealanders. My vision is for a prosperous and compassionate nation that backs those who want to get ahead. 

Getting physical at West Melton The busy, and physical, start to the year has continued for students at West Melton Primary School. Last week all the year four to year six girls participated in a futsal training session with Sam and Annalie from Mainland Football. The school’s promotions officer, Rita Spadoni, said the girls absolutely loved the session and they are now sending four teams to participate in the Girls Only Football/Futsal Festival at English Park on Thursday, March 15. Also last week, the school held its year four to year eight duathlon, where learners had a chance to compete as an individual entry or as part of a team. Each year group has a set distance

that they need to cover. For the year four pupils, it was their first chance in competing in a school duathlon and enjoyed by all. The school’s top year five to year eight competitors now have a chance to compete at the Selwyn Central Zone Duathlon being held at Motukarara Domain in early March. And on Friday at the Duathlon Cup Champions were presented with their trophies. They were: Senior Boys’ Cup Champ: Ted; Senior Girls’ Cup: Isla; Junior Boys’ Cup: Brooklyn; Junior Girls’ Cup: Sophia. 

Sefton takes over top spot Defending champions Sefton leapt to the top of the country cricket standings after a comprehensive win over Weedons on Saturday.

 Oxford batsman James Darcy can only watch as the bails fly after being bowled by Blake De Haan

39 off 42 balls. Chris Warner bowled well for his four wickets. Two quick wickets by Cheviot paceman Ben Rayner gave his side a sniff of victory, before Country representative Harry Fitzpatrick’s off-spin ripped through the DSM line-up to finish with 3/3 off nine overs, including six maidens. Oxford-Rangiora continued its solid 2018 form with a crucial win over fellow cellar dwellers Lincoln. After winning the toss at Lincoln Domain, Oxford made their way through to 160/7 off their allotted 45 overs. Calvin Scott was the rock of the innings with an unbeaten 54, that was interrupted by a ball that slipped through the grill of his helmet and broke his nose. Mark Elliot and Carlito Shalfoon were the pick of the Lincoln bowlers. Oxford started their bowling effort with a bang, taking the first three wickets for only four runs and reducing Lincoln to 36/9. Elliot continued his good day with 47 not out, but was left stranded as Lincoln were eventually all out for 86. 

This fence was funded by the MoE, to provide better security for students with special learning needs, who would be at risk on the roads if they left the school grounds. To help support the safety of these students, gates will normally be shut during the school day. We are trialling some new room signage to help with navigation around the school for visitors and people new to the school. Currently these signs are only laminated paper, but will be made from more permanent materials following the trial. The signs include a separate icon and associated value for each classroom block. It is hoped that having these values visible in our school environment will help to familiarise them. Last Tuesday we held our annual ‘Colours’ assembly in the hall to celebrate the NCEA success of our students in 2017. Some students will be having exams remarked and others are doing some catch-up assessments, so overall final achievement will be higher, however, preliminary results are pleasing: NCEA Level 1: 95%; Level 2: 92%; Level 3: 75%. 

Spotlight on Darfield

Student leaders share their thoughts on a new school year Darfield High School’s new school year is in full swing, with new student leaders taking up the reins. Those leaders share their thoughts and hopes for the 2018 school year.  My name is George Brown and I’m proud to be one of Darfield High School’s Head Prefects for 2018. I would like to use my role to help improve not only Darfield High School, but also the rest of the community. So far this year, our prefect team has had many new and interesting ideas that will benefit the school and our greater community. One in particular, is an interschool talent quest where the finalists from each school will compete against each other in an epic showdown of supreme talent. Another occasion I’m really looking forward to is helping run the 40 hour famine. This is always a terrific event because people from all areas of the school participate together to benefit those in need. My hobbies often involve the water: fly fishing for trout in our local waterways and freediving on Banks Peninsula, and I’ve recently taken up surfing. I also trap possums primarily to control pest numbers and give the wildlife a helping hand. If anyone wishes to contact me with advice or suggestions, I’d love to hear from you, please email me at: headboy@darfield.school.nz

 My name is Katie Sharp, and I am lucky enough to be Head Girl at Darfield High School for 2018. For those of you who do not know me, I have been a student here at DHS since year seven (2012) and you may possibly have seen me meow my way through last year’s school production (The Wizard of Oz) as the Cowardly Lion. It seems unreal that I am in year 13 already. I believe this year is going to go extremely fast, but I am so excited to see what it is going to bring. Together with the other awesome head students and a great group of prefects, I am confident that 2018 is going to be a year full of new and exciting things! If you want to get in touch to give us some more ideas, need advice on projects or would just like to say hello, send me an email at headgirl@darfield. school.nz and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am always around the school, here there and everywhere. So in saying that, come and say hello! I am a Cowardly Lion after all, I won’t bite. Let’s make 2018 a great year! This year I will be helping manage some of the tasks around the school, such as the blackboard, Student Volunteer Army, and school website, as well as being involved in the sports committee. The team of prefects on board this year is awesome and looking to do the best for all students, so any ideas that will help us achieve this are appreciated and will help maximise the work we will do. Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Keeping your pet cool by Yolande Howell BVSc(HONS)

So it has been a lovely hot summer and it seems there are more hot days to come. There are many ways to ensure your pets are kept cool and comfortable. Here are some suggestions: Starting with the obvious, never leave your pet (this includes: dog, cat, bird, rabbit or rodent, etc) in a car on a hot day, the temperature rises rapidly and it doesn’t take long before heat stroke and possibly death ensues. Always make sure there is plenty of fresh clean water, have some spare bowls or drinkers just in case one gets knocked over. Check outside bowls daily, due to rapid evaporation. Make sure outside pets have plenty of shelter and circulating air. Even if there is no covered shelter, there should be at least trees to provide all-day shade. Caged birds should be placed out of direct sunlight in a well-ventilated space. They may even like a light shower using a mist spray bottle. Your pets may like to lick and play with ice too. Try filling a container with water and freeze it, you can also mix treats or their food in the container for extra encouragement.

You can place it on the lawn, and let them spend the day licking to cool down and they get the occasional bonus treat too. This always helps keep them occupied for the day. Smaller pets may like ice cubes in their bowl to lick or play with. Have a little shallow pool of water. Clamshell pools work really well and are resistant to damage from sharp claws. Take your dog swimming in clean rivers (check the council website) and the sea, they’ll love it. Do be aware of sharp stones along rivers. If you go anywhere with deeper waters, do have a life jacket for your dog. There are also cooling pads and cooling coats for your dog. Cooling coats are becoming more popular now, they are designed to be wetted, wrung out and worn by dogs. They keep your dog cool via evaporation and dampness for a few hours and reduce the risk of heat stress. When walking your pet anywhere with road, pavement, stones, gravel, concrete

or sand, make sure you are happy putting your bare feet on the surface. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog! I also recommend pets with long fur to get

a summer cut by their groomer, they can be shaved or trimmed short for comfort. It does make a huge difference and your pet will thank you for it.

IS YOUR DOG IN NEED OF A WASH OR GROOM? Jill Smolenski A Jim's Mobile Dog Wash and Groomer is now working in Selwyn. Our 6m long pool is designed so we do not need to get in with your dog. The temperature is set between 28 and 31 degrees celsius depending on the season. All breeds and sizes of dogs attend the dog spa for a number of different reasons. For dogs recovering from illness or surgery the swim spa provides a controlled environment to swim, which is a low impact form of exercise, so it is easy on the joints. Swimming can help strengthen those with hip, leg and muscle problems, and help dogs with joint problems and arthritis.

Dogs get an aerobic workout, which improves fitness and stamina. This also helps elderly or overweight dogs. There doesn’t have to be anything wrong with your dog to come to Dog Swim Spa. We often get dogs that swim as a part as their normal exercise routine, and dogs who need a bit of water confidence, ideal if you intend taking them to the beach or river. An unexpected benefit we see is some behavioural changes. The dog comes out of its shell and becomes more confident, not

just swimming, but in everyday life. We have had a few ‘growly’ dogs where the owner has not expected the dog to swim or even be touched, and in a few weeks the dog enjoys coming, is happy to be handled and is swimming well, and loves the attention. It becomes ‘their time’. The whole idea is that dogs get the exercise and rehabilitation all while having fun, and what could be better than that. Check us out. Call Chris or June 03 349 0424. Ranger range expanding  by Andy Bryenton

The Polaris Ranger has long been a favourite on Kiwi farms, for its combination of good fuel economy and utilitarian power. Now the range is expanding, offering new options for the rural trade, which include more power — and more practicality. The Polaris Ranger 570 is an exercise in ticking all the boxes. Polaris engineers have gone for the superlatives here, ensuring that they can claim best in class payload, engine power, and towing capacity. The heart of the beast is a 44 horsepower, 567cc single cylinder

email: crt1@windowslive.com

four-stroke, once again set low in the frame for maximum ground clearance. Polaris have added power steering to this already popular package, and the bigger, more accommodating 570 model is available with a suite of enhancements to make it fit for many different purposes. For those who want even more room and load space, the 570 mill is available in a ‘full size’ three seater frame. The same could be said for its forthcoming bigger brother — Polaris have long established dominance in the sport section of the market with their big, brutal RZR series, tearing up the track in such events as the ORANZ off-road championships and even the gruelling Baja rally in North America.

WASTEWATER

Now a Ranger with the same displacement takes the field, with a list of over 100 improvements gleaned from customer feedback. Doubling the horsepower of the 570, the Ranger 1000 is uncompromising, and while it may in fact exceed the amount of sheer grunt needed for regular farm work, those who face particularly tough conditions or who need to lug massive loads will find a reliable

friend in this new iteration of the Ranger. With field days nearly here, local Polaris dealerships are preparing for a busy season. They will be there in force with a whole range of machines on offer, from the evergreen Ranger 570 through to the General, the Ace and the Sportsman quad bike range. There’s a reason these are familiar names around farms! 

Changes ahead for irrigators  by Andrew Curtis, chief executive of IrrigationNZ

With the holiday break and post-election negotiations over, the new government is now settling down to business. IrrigationNZ attended a Land and Water Forum meeting with Ministers David Parker and Damian O’Connor and, along with other primary sector partners, met with the Prime Minister in February. From these sessions, we have some indication of the new government’s priorities. One of their key focuses is on climate change. Of course this has implications for agriculture, especially for dairy farming, but also sheep, cattle and other farming models. Federated Farmers and other primary sector bodies will be involved in future discussions around what is proposed and how this will affect farmers. The focus on climate change is likely to create a need for irrigators to look at reducing power usage. Shifting to gravity-based irrigation systems or more power efficient systems is something a number of Canterbury irrigation schemes have been investing in recent years. The power savings pay off over the longer term. In the future, it’s likely that irrigators will be looking more closely at using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power to fund pumping. The new government’s desire to improve water quality has been clearly

stated since the election. In this area, Canterbury is well ahead of other regions and is leading the way. Farm environment plans provide a tool for farms to record and manage their nutrient discharge, with targets being set requiring that discharge levels reduce over time. The introduction of farm environment plans is still in its infancy. We are still working through how these are developed, implemented and used effectively to improve environmental outcomes. While some benefits are already occurring as a result of the plans being introduced, most of the improvements to waterways, which will occur as a result of these changes, are still yet to come. But we have a framework in place, which will bring future benefits. Improvements in how we use and apply irrigation, also often have associated improvements for nutrient management. Our irrigation testing programme in Ashburton and Selwyn showed that most farmers are now using soil moisture probes. Having the data to know when and where water is needed allows more precise water application, which helps reduce excessive nutrient leaching. The government also wants to encourage

a move towards high value, sustainable land use. We are already seeing a move towards new mixed farming models. This approach has benefits — for example, it allows farmers to choose crops, which will help reduce nitrogen leaching. In many of these areas, there is a need for more research on the environmental impacts and benefits of new and existing practices. Farmers want the same outcomes other New Zealanders want — to have a clean environment and strong communities. More practical tools to help achieve are needed. We are now looking forward to our IrrigationNZ Conference in Alexandra from April 17-19. It will feature a showcase of new irrigation technology, as well as a range of international and local speakers talking about the issues irrigators are facing and how we can address these. Hopefully, we’ll get some more solutions to the challenges farmers are facing. To find out more about the conference and register visit irrigationnz.co.nz. 
