Perfect post for new RSM

p Anne-Maree playing Ruth also known as Ruthless

the character of Ruth is worlds away from her family farm in Burnham. “Ruth has grown up in Auckland in an urban environment, in a Samoan family, and I had very little exposure to Pasifika culture. “I was stoked to get the role, but I knew it was going to be a lot of work needed in order for me to portray this character,” she said. Anna-Maree immersed herself in her co-star’s family environment learning the Samoan language, protocols and cooking. “I really had to focus on spoken language. There’s a particular way that Ruth needed to speak colloquialisms and mannerisms that would help make her plausible for someone that is Ruth in

Anna-Maree Thomas, originally from Burnham, features in the criticallyacclaimed movie Hibiscus and Ruthless. Hibiscus and Ruthless, tells the story of two childhood friends, Ruth and Hibiscus, in their final year of university; Ruth becomes part of Hibiscus’s family, growing up under Hibiscus’s mother’s strict rules, but not being bound by them. No going out, and no boyfriends. Anna-Maree takes on the lead role of Ruth also known as Ruthless. A take no-nonsense New Zealand girl. Having two female leads in a New Zealand film is rare and more so for comedy. It’s an opportunity Anna-Maree relishes but the greatest challenge she faced in preparing for the role, is that

real life,” she said Anna-Maree is really excited about how the film has turned out and how it has been received; it was a rapturous reception at the world premiere in Auckland last week with the audience not being shy to congratulate and embrace Anna-Maree as one of their own. Anna-Maree is under no illusions as to the uncertainties that come with being an actor. She knows it’s early days in her career and can’t wait to see what opportunities come her way given how Hibiscus and Ruthless has been received by audiences, it’s sure to be plenty. p A wide range of attractions means the fete is always popular

The organisers say that many of the stalls from previous fetes will be back and 20 new stalls will add to the popular fete’s attractions. Some other perpetual favourites such as a dedicated children’s area are back, and there is a brand new attraction in the form of a new area called The Secret Garden. The entertainment area

has been moved so that families will be able to relax on the grass under the shade of the trees. The date of the fete has also been moved forward, so that it no longer clashes with winter sports trials. This year the fete will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free. ¢

Taking a leaf from the book of the old-time American summers you may have seen on the big screen is a series of drive-in movies. They’ll be firing up the projector at the Darfield domain on February 9, the Rolleston reserve on February 16 and Anderson Square in Leeston on March 2. Another great old-fashioned idea is the traditional street party — a chance

to meet and greet your neighbours, enjoy a summer sausage sizzle and mingle. Already a great success through December and January, the free events roll on through February and March encompassing Prebbleton, Darfield, Rolleston, Lincoln and Southbridge. Local hero shares award Prices up at Aquatic Centre Burnham resident, Heather Wilson, remembers her reaction when she was told she was to be a recipient of the Kiwibank Local Hero Award for her community service. “I was incredibly embarrassed. Like most volunteers, I didn’t go looking for recognition. I preferred to stay under the radar,” she said. However, a week later Heather realised the award was recognising the role of ‘grass-roots’ volunteers who otherwise would receive little recognition. “The award is for all of us who are doing what we can to make a difference in our own backyards, in our communities,” she said. Heather is a military wife. Her husband, Chris, is in the New Zealand Army and Heather served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. She said that being a military family can be a unique experience and sometimes an unsettling one. “That, I think, was initially my motivation in trying to help families integrate into the Burnham community. “Being in the military can be very transient and isolating, especially when you are separated from your wider family support, and overseas deployment of partners can put extra pressure on families. That is why the volunteers and I work to provide a social network in the community. It is a pleasure and a privilege to give something back. Twice as Nice is a thrift shop ‘flagship’ of Mrs Wilson’s informal support network. “During the East Timor conflict in the late 1990s, Burnham served as

a collection hub for donated goods destined for Timor but transportation costs were a bit erratic, so a thrift shop was established to sell the goods and send the funds instead.” Funds were later raised for the local community. Heather is happy to share her Kiwibank award with her volunteers and her community. However, she has another award in her sights. “Believe it or not, Twice as Nice, our little thrift shop, was nominated for the Selwyn District Sustainability Awards, and we won silver. Now we are going for gold!” ¢

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre admission prices are set to rise on February 1 after the council’s annual pricing review recommended the increase — just the second time since the centre opened in June 2013. The last increase was on January 1, 2016.

Aquatic facilities manager Kathy Moore says the centre’s prices have been well researched during the annual review and took into consideration increasing annual costs such as electricity, staffing, pool chemicals and maintenance. “The new pricing is in line with other similar facilities in Canterbury and will enable the centre to reach its annual revenue target, which aims to achieve a 50/50 cost recovery result with user pays and rates subsidy,” Ms Moore says. The pricing review considered charges at facilities including the Christchurch City Council pools (Jellie Park, Graham Condon and Pioneer), the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre in Timaru, the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton and Dudley Pool in Rangiora. Mayor Sam Broughton cut the ribbon and spoke of the importance of this heritage site that was established by TW Adams in the 1960s, because of his love of Greendale and his love of trees. The calm and peaceful atmosphere was enjoyed by all, as they picnicked under the shade of the mature trees and children enjoyed the natural playground,

running around the pathways, collecting sticks and pine cones. The picnic was reminiscent of the many picnics that were a feature of life in early Greendale, and there was a consensus that there needs to be more of these community activities. The arboretum is open to the public. ¢

Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, 2/4 Battalion, stationed at Burnham Military Camp, has a new regimental sergeant major. He is Warrant Officer Class One Shane McClay and, with his wide range of outdoor interests, it seems Warrant Officer McClay sees Burnham as the perfect posting. “I have been posted here before. I know a lot about the district, I know what it has to offer, and I am delighted that my family and I have been able to return to live here,” he said. After completing basic training he was posted to 2nd/1st Battalion in Burnham, the first of several postings in and around our area. At the end of 1998, he was posted to the Second Canterbury Regiment based in Timaru where he was promoted to staff sergeant. In 2003, he joined the Regional Training Wing. He remained there until 2005 before being posted back to his battalion in Burnham as a company quartermaster sergeant. Warrant Officer McClay has also been deployed and served with distinction overseas. He was in the second rotation to Bosnia as a section command, then deployed to East Timor before serving in Afghanistan. After his return from Afghanistan, he attained his current rank of warrant officer class one.

Prison hosts marathon

Selwyn District Council’s camping areas at Coes Ford and Chamberlains Ford are proving to be popular places after the July floods ravaged the areas.

u by Mike Isle

During the floods, the Selwyn River burst its banks with a peak flow of 697 cumec, ripping through both campgrounds and damaging nearly everything in its path. Selwyn District Council reserves officer Chris Burke said that “after the floods, we went in once the water subsided. We cleaned up - just for the area to be re-flooded another five times over the coming months.” The council also brought in biodiversity experts to provide help, removing river debris from plants and staking up flattened shrubs. “At Chamberlains Old Bridge Road entrance, we repaired broken fence lines and removed river debris, rebased and graded shingle driveways, as the current shingle drives had completely been washed away leaving only a soil base.

“We cleaned out the toilet areas and tested all equipment, checked the stability of all of the trees and removed any that had been compromised,” Mr Burke said. The NZ Army also pitched in at Chamberlains, by providing 100 personnel for four hours through one of its youth programmes. The volunteers restaked plants, removed river debris, hand-picked stones off the turf areas and put topsoil around the roots of eroded shrubs. “At Chamberlains Bethels Road entrance, river shingle that had been washed into the area from the flood was removed, a large scour in the ground was filled in, the entire site was relevelled and the driveway was fixed,” Mr Burke adds. “It was a massive effort. But it paid off in the end.” ¢

In what is believed to be a first in New Zealand 25 young offenders and 14 prison staff at Christchurch Men’s Prison competed in marathon events without leaving the prison.

p Olivier Lacoua (left) training with a prisoner

The idea was the brainchild of the Joshua Foundation’s Chris Allan, who leads the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award Programme in the prison’s youth unit. “I suggested that the young men could complete a marathon for the physical recreation component of the award and they took to it immediately,” he said. “They quickly became competitive and would challenge each other running the 2.2-kilometre loop within the walls of the prison.” The full marathon was 19 laps of the course.

The event was boosted by the presence of French ‘marathon man’ Olivier Lacoua who has run 79 marathons and coached the participants. Tom (not his real name) is typical of those who participated. When he came to the prison for drug-related offending, he could barely run 100 metres. Now he is doing laps daily. “It’s great to get up in the morning and do something physical,” he said. “It is so much better than drugs and I am making my family proud of me again.” The marathon was won in 4 hours 30 minutes by a prisoner. ¢

Make the most of the season u by Andy Bryenton

The number one new year’s resolutions always involve three things, year after year. Diet, exercise — and finishing those DIY projects. Summer is the perfect time to undertake many of the tasks which would be impossible without clear weather, and despite a spot of rain recently there are still plenty of summer weeks ahead in which to get to work. The first thing which comes to mind is roofing. There’s literally no time like the present to get that old iron off and make sure that winter leaks simply don’t happen. When the roof is off it’s also the perfect time to fix up and top-up insulation, or install and repair ducted extractor fans, range hoods, heat transfer systems of ventilation units. With no need to crawl in the tight ceiling space, all these inroof conveniences can be installed in a snap, saving time and money. This is also the time of year when water supplies are a critical factor on the farm and on rural properties. Recent rain has provided a top-up, but many tanks will still run low before autumn arrives in full force. If your water source comes to the tank from your roof, it’s a good season to book in a tank clean. It’s no use waiting for the tank to run dry, as tank vac specialists need a small amount

of water to work with to remove all the debris which may have sluiced down from your gutters and pipes. Similarly, it’s the season to check those filtration systems — swap out your cartridges or add on ultraviolet ‘bug zapping’ technology when water sources run shallow and warm, promoting bacteria growth. Warm and dry summer conditions are also the prime time for laying concrete, for fencing, as the pad for a future construction, or to install a permanent driveway or path. A new year can also mean a great excuse to adopt a new style. It’s great weather for painting, and the latest interior decor fashions for 2018 are in store now at local wallpaper, paint, curtain, blind and flooring specialists. A minimalist look is beginning to return, featuring bold single feature walls and moving away from the ‘distressed chic’ and baroque influences of the mid-2010s.

‘Keep it private’ — police Canterbury Police are encouraging people to exercise caution when conducting themselves online and remember to think twice about sharing private information or content. “Anyone using dating sites and apps needs to be very careful when developing relationships online.” said Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel, Acting Area Manager; Prevention. “It’s extremely difficult to permanently delete something from the internet. “Once you have pushed send, you no longer have control of what happens with the image or information you have shared,” he said. Police encourages people not to take personal photographs of themselves or recordings of compromising activities. “Once these images are obtained, a scammer may attempt to extort money by threatening to release these images into the public arena and to their family, friends or employer. Scammers are organised criminals — they do everything they can to appear legitimate. “This includes using fake identities, pictures they find on the internet and stories that have worked for them before to gain something from a person. Unfortunately this is a problem that is not going to go away and people

need to be vigilant when conducting their business online.” Online scams can be sophisticated and well-planned, and police receive scam reports from people of all ages and backgrounds. Prevention is key : — never share a photo of yourself that you wouldn’t want anyone else to see. — never respond to a request for money or financial information via an online dating app or website. If you receive an email that appears to be from a bank, government organisation or other agency but you are unsure of its authenticity, phone them to check if the email is legitimate. — don’t allow location settings or identify your home address when using online dating apps or websites. — check your privacy settings online to ensure your address, full name, workplace etc are not available. Anyone who believes they are a victim of any crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local police. Netsafe also provides helpful advice and information on their website. ¢

The team are specialists in sawing by hand, core drilling and more, meaning a smooth finish that will last, while providing any other related services you could need. They have a team of domestic and commercial experts who can travel anywhere in the South Island, anytime 24/7. On top of that, they also offer free quotes, and staff are always happy to speak with clients about their jobs in more detail. “It’s in the branding really. We offer affordable concrete cutting with quality and we don’t leave a mess behind,” says Michael. “We are on time and the work is done to a high standard. “Some people just turn up, do the job and leave. Concreting can be sort of messy and if you’re not careful you leave an untidy site behind you. We make sure to wash windows down with sugar soap.” Affordable Concrete Cutting With Quality offer a combination of manpower and precision and can get the job done right the first time. “We are unmatched in the South Island when it comes to concrete cutting and core drilling, and always look forward to tackling a new challenge. “Our team has successfully finished many works involving driveways, offices and everything in between.”

“Now well established, I have clients across the world and I know my clients well. It is my personalised service that sets The Mortgage Shop apart from banks,” he says. Acquiring the best mortgage is not just about interest rates. It’s about the long-term expectations combined with your lifestyle and life plans. “Looking after my people is so important not only now, but in the future. This is why The Mortgage Shop is different,” Andy says. “I am also able to offer a quick response, personal service and good deals. I do genuinely care, and have a goal to make the home loan realistic for each person. As a member of the Professional Advisers Association and the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, I am well versed in mortgage and interest rate markets and risk protection. The Mortgage Shop is conveniently located at The Vale in Gerald Street, and clients find it beneficial that the offices are shared with Lincoln Law. “The advantage to clients is that we often work together to reduce costs and manage a comprehensive plan to ensure families and their major assets are given the protection they deserve. This includes wills, family trusts and conveyancing, as well as all other legal services.” As of last week, I am pleased to welcome Lisa Cooper to our adviser team. Lisa brings

Keeping your ducks in a row u by Andy Bryenton

Perhaps the first thing you need to know about keeping ducks on your lifestyle block or smallholding is that they are impossible to line up neatly. That being said, the old saying is more metaphor than truth, as these waterfowl are easy to care for and don’t need strict discipline — just a well-thought-out home to call their own. There are many misconceptions about keeping ducks, chief of which is that they need a pond to be dug out — one which will inevitably become a mudhole or eat up the entire lawn. Domestic ducks — the kind you want, as compared to ornamental waterfowl — actually only spend about one-tenth of their day in the water, so something as simple as a child’s clam shell pool made of plastic will do for a small group. Ducks need housing that’s secure at night — less so here in New Zealand where there are no large predators, but shelter and communal warmth are still

part of duck ‘society’. A house much like that used for chickens is perfect, though ducks don’t roost on perches. Make sure there is a wide doorway, as the whole gang will try to squeeze through at once when the call for breakfast comes. Ducks forage, but can also be fed on wheat or layer pellets. Because they operate as a unit — even if they’re not in a row — you may have to gently herd your ducks into their home at night until they are used to the routine. Don’t worry — they are easily led and not as silly as they sometimes look! Ducks can be easier to look after than chickens

NICK’S PET FOOD LTD For all your unwanted animals… Cattle, sheep, calves, horses

with the right setup — and they provide beautiful rich eggs for your home baking. Remember that ducks will often bury their eggs into the straw of their nests, so an ‘easter egg hunt’ may turn up more than you think. Additionally, your average duck makes far less noise at

dawn than a rooster! For those who love both, you can keep both ducks and chickens, though give them both enough space, as chickens tend to peck and bully other birds and they have an advantage in a tussle thanks to their sharp beaks and claws. ¢

Lifestyles n’ Farming

This crossover is no puzzle u by Andy Bryenton

Sometimes a device is so perfect for a task it was never specifically designed for, that it becomes well known as something completely new. Think of Range Rovers becoming the school run ‘taxi’ when they were made to slog across muddy grouse moors, or the utilitarian Volkswagen van being adopted by the hippie counterculture. Others simply hit all the points needed to succeed a little left of where they were aimed. That’s the ongoing story of the Polaris Ace, which was initially devised for the North American market as an adventure vehicle — a means to hit the trail with the ease of a dune buggie’s car-like controls, the safety of a roll cage and the small footprint and light weight of a quad bike. In this role it’s certainly been well received. But here in New Zealand there’s another breakout market for this little machine. As more and more people of retirement age opt for a lifestyle block in the country, there’s more and more call for a middle ground between the big side-by-side workhorse UTVs, which farmers have come to rely on, and the traditional go-anywhere quad. Those in the retirement age bracket may need that extra mobility to go with a smallholding, but find the riding position of a quad to be either uncomfortable or simply unfamiliar. A fear of rolling a quad may also come into the equation for the inexperienced rider. Enter the Ace, with a full sit-down racing seat, steering wheel, roll cage and side protection. It’s small enough to be nimble, powerful enough to tote tools

and equipment, capable on grass, gravel and mud, and represents a nice middle ground between big and small off-road options. Just the fact that this machine has a low centre of gravity, wide stance on knobbly tyres and a full cage inspires confidence. That makes getting around a whole lot easier — and it’s seen the Ace take its place as a hard-working fourwheeler even on large commercial farms. If a quad is no longer for you or was never your speed, but a full-sized UTV is overkill for the task at hand, there’s nothing in the market which fills the gap so well. ¢
