The museum went all-out, particularly for the children, to make the event a success. It rolled-out all its helicopters for a rare display together, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force even flew in a threetonne A109 chopper from its base at Ohakea, especially for the event.

E-scooters and pedestrians on collision course Lincoln University post-doctoral researcher, Dr Helen Fitt, says tensions between e-scooter users and pedestrians are problematic and “not likely to go away”. Dr Fitt and colleague Dr Angela Curl of the University of Otago recently conducted a survey on the use of e-scooters in New Zealand. Initial findings show 90% of scooter users had ridden on the footpath, but only half of the users and around a quarter of non-users think that is the right place to ride them. “There is a lot of contention about scooter use on footpaths from other footpath users including older people and people with disabilities,” she said. “Some scooter users are aware they are not wanted on footpaths. It makes them uncomfortable.” She said that riders were often not confident in traffic and felt unable to signal by taking their hands off the handlebars; this means the scooters are generally not suitable for the road. “Scooters are very popular for good reasons, but our p Dr Helen Fitt “We might need to consider survey suggests they currently don’t fit well within existing infrastructure.” Dr Fitt infrastructural zones based on speed said the scooters are part of the electric not vehicle type, with slow, medium and vehicle movement, which is blurring the fast zones instead of pedestrian, cycle lines between transport modes. and vehicle zones.” “It is becoming less clear what belongs Dr Fitt said scooters are part of where and which rules apply,” she said. “electric micro-mobility and wider “We need to start some serious changes in transport”. conversations about how to integrate In May the Selwyn District Council new modes of transpor t into approved a six-month trial of e-scooters urban environments.” in the district. ¢

Quarry commissioners appointed The Selwyn District Council has named the commissioners it has appointed to consider the application by Fulton Hogan for a quarry on Dawson’s Road in Templeton. They are Rob van Voorthuysen, Sharon McGarry and Paul Thomas. The council says they are all experienced commissioners with the skills necessary to oversee the contentious and controversial resource consent applications by Fulton Hogan to both Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury. Environment Canterbur y had earlier voted to approve the commissioners, and the applications

will be heard at a joint hearing. If the consent is granted, Fulton Hogan wants the quarry running 24 hours a day for almost half the year — with up to 750 trucks entering or leaving the site every day. That is something opposed by many in the Templeton and nearby Weedons communities. The council has received 430 submissions, 329 of which oppose Fulton Hogan’s application for resource consent. ¢

Preparation for the Lincoln Town Centre development has taken a significant step forward with the Selwyn District Council’s purchase of a property on Gerald Street.

p 5 Gerald Street Lincoln

The SDC has bought a key site at 5 Gerald Street, which sits at the entrance to the proposed east retail precinct. The council’s group property manager Douglas Marshall said the council hoped to demolish the building, currently occupied by Lincoln Chinese Takeaway, before the end of the year as the first step in opening up the retail precinct area and transforming the street appeal. “It is the first major step in making something new that people in Lincoln have been looking forward to for a while. There’s been interest from people in Lincoln over many years in doing something new with that site, and this was an opportunity to open up the space with a fresh, welcoming area to the new town centre.” The organisation is considering options for the space including a park or reserve, Marshall said. The town centre plan, adopted by the SDC in 2016 after extensive community consultation, will develop public spaces and squares, provide for safe cycling and walking connections along with adequate car parking and promote

‘active frontage’ with buildings placed to the edge of the footpath and facing the street with car parking behind. The design of the Gerald Street Plaza at the eastern end of Gerald Street around Robert Street proposes widening the pavement to create a pedestrian plaza along the shop fronts with different paving, street furniture and landscaping. Redevelopment of the Gerald Street site will allow this to occur more easily and in keeping with the rest of the town centre design. ¢

The group from 11 different nationalities shared their stories of how they came to call New Zealand home as they became New Zealand citizens in the council’s monthly citizenship ceremony. Each spoke of how they came to call New Zealand home, but there was a homecoming of a different kind for Tyler Hokianga. Raised in Australia, Mr Hokianga told the room it was a visit to see his parents back here in New Zealand that sparked a desire to embrace his Kiwi heritage and officially become a Kiwi. Nine of the group spoke about intending to visit New Zealand for a short time on holidays, work or study

and finding their partner. Among them was Candice Trumper from South Africa. “The one thing my father told me before I came was not to take up with any Kiwi boys. Well, we fell in love.” Others spoke of falling in love with the country and the way of life. Nina Kozhevnikova from Vladivostok in Russia who came for an adventure and to visit family after her husband died, Douglas Dorrian, who moved from Scotland to South Africa before settling here, also came for adventure. “New Zealand is such a great country for all the opportunities we have cycling, jumping off things, every day it’s great to be here,” he said. ¢ PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT WITH TITAN ROOF MEMBRANE Suitable for new & used roofs - Waterproof - Offers long term UV protection - Won’t crack like paint Phone for a free quote today

No need for buildings to be strengthened  by Mike Isle

No emergency routes at risk from earthquake-prone buildings have been identified by the council.

After receiving a commissioned report, Selwyn District Council has found there is no need to require any buildings in the district to be prioritised for earthquake strengthening to prevent masonry from falling during an earthquake. In 2018 and early 2019 the council undertook a process to check buildings and carry out a public consultation on possible buildings requiring urgent repairs on strategic routes. The council

could have required owners of identified buildings to carry out a priority fix, but through the consultation process, they determined that no buildings needed to be identified as priority buildings. The council said it would continue its regular communications with owners of non-prioritised earthquake-prone buildings and work with them to ensure strengthening work is carried out within the required 15-year timeframe. ¢

Nominations for local elections now open Nominations for the 2019 local elections open and anyone thinking of standing are encouraged to get their nomination in early. In Selwyn, elections will be held for the mayor and 11 councillors, along with five members of the Malvern Community Board. Voters will also vote for representatives on the Mid Canterbury Constituency of the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) and board members of Canterbury District Health Board. Nominations are open until noon on Friday, August 16, and Selwyn District Council deputy electoral officer Stephen Hill said potential candidates should aim to get their nominations completed as early as possible. “Getting nomination forms in early means we have plenty of time to check that everything is in order and all the documentation is completed in time,” he said.

“Anyone thinking of standing for the council or Malvern Community Board should take the time to check the information in our candidate handbook, which is available online. “It includes everything candidates need to know about eligibility to stand for election, the nomination process, who can nominate you, key dates and how the election process works.” Anyone above the age of 18 can stand for election if they are a New Zealand citizen and on the electoral roll. Nomination forms must be signed by two people who are enrolled as electors in the ward or subdivision that the person is nominated for. Nomination forms and a downloadable copy of the candidate handbook are available at selwyn. govt.nz/elections or from council offices and service centres. ¢

“The children participated in two events with both 18 holes and 9 holes on offer to cater for the various stages of development. Rangiora provided a great course with the juniors all enjoying the challenge,” says Canterbury Golf development manager Rachel Thow. “We run a junior tournament every school holidays. The younger children play from a shorter course, and the more experienced and older children compete on the normal course. “We introduced the nine-hole shorter option for newer players as an introduction to the game, so they are able to achieve pars as well. One girl from the Selwyn club shot one under par from the shortened course including two birdies and an eagle. That is a real

highlight for anyone to have let alone a young child. “The school holiday games allow children the opportunity to play with different people on different courses around Canterbury and gives them something to get involved with. With Selwyn Hub, we have now finalised our term three programme and are looking forward to a new series that has seven events and new opportunities for the juniors to play different formats. “Those involved in golf are loving the sport, and it is great seeing them succeed on the modified formats and enjoy their own version of the game. SPOTLIGHT ON

ROLLESTON

The iron highway west  by Andy Bryenton

For many years, Rolleston was famed as the junction between two of the most important rail lines in the South Island. Here, the main south line met the midland line, a railway that was conceived with a courageous vision and has given New Zealand one of its great overland sightseeing journeys. The idea of a rail line to link Canterbury to the coal and timber wealth of the west coast was put before a royal commission in 1883 but rejected as uneconomical. In the way of the line stood the Southern Alps, along with the rugged Broken River and Waimakariri gorges, described by District Engineer W.N. Blair

as “very rough, the mountain slope rises from the riverbed while the river runs in a fearful gorge all the way”. Those early railway engineers were undaunted, and pressed on, constructing viaducts and tunnels to rival anything Isambard Brunel crafted in Britain. The Staircase Viaduct, for example, lofts the rails 75 metres above a fast-flowing torrent. The Otira Tunnel is more than eight kilometres long, passing under the mountains to Arthurs Pass township. The locomotives that would ply this line from Rolleston to the coast were as mighty as the structures completed to forge their path. Perhaps the kings of them all were the KB series, colossi of the rails designed to tackle the steep

gradients and heavy goods trains which were the norm for the midland line. More than 10 metres long, equipped with a secondary booster motor, and delivering in excess of 1,400hp, the KB class engines were a sight to behold as they steamed out of Rolleston on their

way across the spine of New Zealand. Today, the line is home to the famed TranzAlpine service, acclaimed as one of the great rail voyages in the world. It’s 212 kilometres of history and stunning scenery, which is anchored at its eastern end by Rolleston. ¢

Restoration in Canterbury

Save Lives

Two native planting and restoration projects in Canterbury have received support from the One Billion Trees Fund. “The projects include a 20-hectare native regeneration project on the Banks Peninsula and a restoration ambassador role led by the University of Canterbury,” said forestry minister, Shane Jones. The One Billion Trees Fund offers direct grants for planting and regeneration projects as well as partnership funding for projects that aim to reduce the barriers to tree planting. “The owners of Waipuna Bush on the Banks Peninsula purchased the 74-hectare property specifically to protect and enhance the natural environment. The area is a site of ecological significance and a recommended area for protection and has a conservation covenant over the entire property. “We will see significant biodiversity and environmental benefits, including erosion control, as a result of the passion of the landowners and their dedication to this area and I am pleased that, with support from the fund, they will be able to further protect this important area.” Funding has also been approved for a native restoration ambassador, led by the University of Canterbury’s School of Forestry. “The aim of the native restoration ambassador will be to provide free, independent advice to farmers,

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming year. In our third year, we planted 32 hectares. We harvested mostly by hand and after a lot of research now use a dedicated harvesting machine.” “We have recently moved into a 4,000 square metre hemp food dedicated facility in Tauranga and work alongside Carfields, on the agricultural growing and machinery arm of the business. It is about enabling industry with sustainable solutions. Hemp has no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant as it is a totally different cultivar. “It is planted October and must have good, fertile soil. We do not use pesticides or herbicides in our growing programme. It takes four months to grow up to four metres tall and is harvested in March for seed and fibre. In the coming season, we will be planting around 2,000 hectares and have recently produced our first press cold pressed oil, which we call Kiwi Hemp Seed Oil. It has helped people with various issues like eczema, psoriasis and joint issues. You can have it in salads, dressings, dips, or just drizzled on food. The testimonials are all on our MyHempfarm.co.nz website. “We will be installing a dehuller to produce hemp hearts. They are nature’s most nutrient-dense seeds and are a complete protein supplying all the

essential amino acids, fatty acids, magnesium, vitamins and minerals. A tablespoon a day is the recommended daily amount. We also produce flavoured protein powders and hemp milk. Our milk is already in the hospitality industry for frothy coffees.“ HempFarm recently signed a partnership agreement with NZ Yarn. “They process merino wool, and we will be blending the hemp with wool for carpets and yarns. for erosion control and seed matting are other products we are planning, as it won’t have any chemicals seeping into the soil and waterways. Every industry can use hemp, including plastics and building. “Farmers are loving having something different to get their teeth into while getting a financial return, which at least equals dairy. Planting on the boundary makes it a good barrier, and it can help with run-off into the waterways as a

mopper crop. Hemp locks the carbons up forever and is one of the most positive ways we can accomplish positive results right here in New Zealand. “It is our passion to clean-up our precious environment, and we are very proud of the progress we are making and plan to see as much hemp growing in New Zealand as you see maize. Once we get to at least 10,000 hectares, we will feel like we are starting to make a real difference.” ¢

Showhomes and Renovations ADVERTORIAL

Colour your world with quality A layer of paint is only as thin as a human hair, but it’s the first impression people have of your home or business. It’s also the first line of defence against the elements that assault timber, brick and steel with icy rain, sleet and snow and bake them with blazing sunlight. All this means that choosing the right painter is of ultimate importance. Paintrod Quality Painters has assembled a team with the expertise and experience to ensure a fine finish, whether they are tackling a residential or commercial job, indoors or out. Paint and wallcoverings are their trade, and Rod and his associates aim for 100 per cent customer satisfaction by starting with the little details. “Phone calls will be returned promptly, appointments are kept, prices are fair, workmanship standards are high, and our employees show up clean, neat and ready to work,” says Rod.

It’s not just the way this seasoned veteran of the construction and decorating trade starts, but also how he finishes a job that counts. Whether he’s undertaking maintenance to keep a building looking fresh, protecting decking timber from the elements, or putting the final touches on a new build, he’s all about attention to the finer points of the craft. Of course, the real proof of this dedication comes from happy customers. Paintrod have quite a collection of testimonials, such as these; “He is reliable and always takes the time to do the job to the highest standard. Rod is one of the best tradespeople that we have come across in Christchurch,” says one satisfied couple. Another customer adds: “Rod had everything prepared and his communication and punctuality was brilliant. He is very professional and so easy to deal with. Himself and his co-worker did an outstanding job, and I would thoroughly recommend him. I wish all contractors were this good to deal with.” If you’re renovating or building, consider

that final touch of colour and protection which complete the picture. Why not

choose the locals who have ‘quality’ as their middle name?

Showhomes and Renovations

Getting into hot water  by Andy Bryenton

Approximately one-third of the average Kiwi power bill comprises water heating, and we use hot water for so many applications around the home that it’s hard to conceive of a time, not so long ago, when boiling a copper kettle was a time-consuming chore. Our ancestors did without electricity, but we can’t so the best option for the modern home is to cut back that bill using technology. Perhaps the simplest and most timetested method is to plumb a woodburning fireplace into a specially adapted cylinder. This wet-back method works fine in rural areas where emissions rules are lenient, and firewood is plentiful, but it has the added drawback of summertime inconvenience. A hot shower and clean dishes are still a priority in summer, but a blazing hearth is not. Hence the popularity of a technology, which is still just catching on in New Zealand, despite massive popularity overseas. Heat pump hot water systems use the same efficient heat exchanger principle as those heating and cooling appliances, which are not a fixture of many living rooms. Instead of heating air, they heat water, expelling cold air from a unit outdoors. Some hot water heat pumps are designed as a single unit and are fitted outside, but for obvious reasons storing a cylinder of hot water out of doors in a southern winter is counterproductive. Thankfully, Kiwi designed and built systems exist that replace the old ‘boiler’ cylinder and its element, leaving just an unobtrusive box tucked away in the garden. Savings are highest for homes with high hot water use. It may still be more

ROAD SAFETY

economical to switch to a gas califont for those who live alone or whose children have moved out. Moreover, savings in the hundreds of dollars have been accurately reported by users. There’s also the option to boost the power of a hot water heat pump with solar hot water heating panels in the summer, further increasing efficiency. For those

considering a bathroom renovation or a new build, it’s certainly something to explore. ¢
