Every few days we would count them up as each can donated was awarded one point for the pupil’s House. It was a great way to introduce some friendly ‘House competition’ in school while helping other people. “Templer was the winning House having donated an incredible 235 cans. “I recently saw an advertisement asking for people to support others in need by donating cans of food because the City Mission was completely out of baked beans and spaghetti. They were also down to the last few tins of fruit and tomatoes,” said school leader Alexis Wright. “I learnt that during the month of April, the Christchurch City Mission served 2,561 people through their foodbank. This was an increase of more than 36 per cent from the same time last year. The council has received 430 submissions, 329 of which oppose Fulton Hogan’s application for resource consent for the Jones Road quarry. However, the large number of submissions received has created its own set of headaches for the council. In its latest update for Templeton residents, Environment Canterbury said that in the case of some handwritten submissions they had deciphered some of the names incorrectly, and in other cases made a typo during the uploading process. The council apologised for the errors.

The submissions can be viewed and checked on Environment Canterbury’s website: ecan.govt.nz. If anyone has any corrections to their name or would prefer their submission wasn’t published they should email the council with this information to quarrymail@ecan.govt. nz. The council said that in some cases, because of sensitive personal information in submissions, they chose to publish them in redacted form or not publish them at all to protect the interests of submitters. That is the reason some submitters may not find their submissions online.

Selwyn achieves best  by Mike Isle

Selwyn District Council has received the highest credit rating of any council in New Zealand after being awarded an AA+ by ratings agency Fitch Ratings. The rating is a measure of the council’s ability to meet its financial commitments, and the rating means that the organisation is at very low risk of defaulting on its loans. In its assessment, Fitch Ratings took into account the strength of the council’s financial management and the district’s economy, driven by population growth. It recognised the council’s prudent financial forecasts and the diversity of the district’s economy including professional, scientific and technological services. Council chief executive David Ward said the rating shows the financial strength of the district and the council’s work to set Selwyn up for the future. “This is a reflection of the growth in the Selwyn district, but also of the good work done by the council in responding to that growth and planning its economic future well. A lot of hard work has been put in by staff to ensure we’re handling our finances in the best way for  Selwyn District Council Chief Executive, David Ward Selwyn now and into the future and we’re delighted that is reflected in investment it is making to match the the rating.” booming growth of the district, and the It is the first time the council has efforts to do this in a prudent financial sought a credit rating. Counterfeit notes circulating Police have issued a warning about counterfeit notes circulating through Canterbury. Two men have been arrested and charged with possession of the notes, but police warn that some notes are still in circulation and shopkeepers in particular need to keep vigilant. One store in Darfield fell victim when it accepted a counterfeit $100 note last week. Other notes believed to be in circulation are $50, $20 and $5 notes. A police spokesperson told The Record that retailers need to be reminded to be vigilant and to check banknotes before accepting them. She said information on how to spot a counterfeit note was available on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s website.

The bank says New Zealand has low levels of counterfeiting by international standards, but our banknotes are made of polymer (a type of plastic) and have security features carefully built in to help make spotting a counterfeit easier. Simon Darryl Bryant, 28, a fisherman from Nelson, and Isaac Vaughn Wilson, 29, a coachbuilder from Rakaia, appeared in the Christchurch District Court last week. They were jointly charged with unlawful possession of 19 forged $50 notes, one $100 note, one $20 note and a $5 note. No pleas were entered.

Prospective Canterbury Regional Councillors will have a chance to find out what the role is all about at a candidates’ information evening on July 15.

Weedons Golf Club member, Deanna Matthews has won the Canterbury Golf’s Most Promising Junior Girl of the Year Award.

Chief executive Bill Bayfield says the meeting is part of the council’s efforts to increase candidate interest and help inform decisions to stand for council. “All councils are charged with increasing candidate interest and voter turnout in local body elections, but we’re keen to ensure that all those considering standing for election as regional councillors have the opportunity to be as informed as possible about the nomination and election process, as well as the role of a regional council and elected members. They’ll also have the opportunity for any questions they have to be answered,” Bayfield said. “We absolutely encourage  Environment Canterbury’s chief executive, anyone who wants to make a Bill Bayfield difference to environmental issues in the Canterbury region to stand. “Deanna has just turned 13 and joined the Weedons club in 2016. At the time she was on a 22 handicap, under the tuition of coach Wayne Davies. She has become an accomplished golfer playing off a 4.3 handicap,” says the club’s children’s facilitator Margaret Langan. “She took out the Women’s Silver Club Championship title this year, a competition she came runner-up last year. In the final over 36 holes, Deanna shot 76 in the morning round before going on to win the match 7/5 over her opponent. That trophy is proudly on display next to the Avondale Women’s Open trophy that she won earlier this year. “Her dad Alistair is a huge  support and takes Deanna to her practice sessions and to all her games. She is our number one player in the Weedons weekend interclub team and also competes in all the women’s weekend open competitions and represents the club in the Pollock Cup. Having someone of this age doing so well, especially from a country club is incredible that is how good she is, she has really flourished since joining Weedons.

Deanna Matthews is Canterbury Golf’s Most Promising Junior Girl

“We are very proud of her. She is extremely dedicated. Most people don’t take up golf until later in life, but Deanna showed an interest at an early age. She definitely deserves this award. She trains and practises really hard, and it is good to see her reaping the rewards of all her efforts. She started playing golf at five years old, and her current handicap is 5.4.” 

Heading to Young Farmer finals ď ľ by Mike Isle

Four Canterbury high school students are preparing to compete in the coveted national final of a gruelling agri-food event. Almost 30 students will converge on Hawke’s Bay this week for the hotlycontested FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final. The competition will be the culmination of months of preparation for St Andrew’s College student Jack Stokes. “We’re really excited. It’s been a few years since a team from our school has made it through to the grand final, so it’s an amazing opportunity, he said. The 17-year-old will compete with fellow St Andrew’s College boarder Charlie Kinney, 18. The pair will fly to Napier next Thursday. “We’ve had an unbelievable amount of support in the lead up to the event, he said. “We’ve been meeting weekly with our school’s two leaders of agriculture who’ve been quizzing us on our general and agricultural knowledge. It’s been really helpful. The duo will go head-to-head with Caitlin Rhodes, 17, and Luci Grigg, 17, from Rangiora High School. “We’re starting to get a bit nervous, it’s not long now until the competition kicks off, said Caitlin, who lives on a lifestyle block. “We’ve been doing a lot of study and trying to grow our knowledge and skills as much as possible. It will be the first time both teams have competed at the grand final, which

Environment Canterbury senior manager public transport Stewart Gibbon confirmed that funding had been made available through the Environment Canterbury annual plan process to allow the trial services until the end of October. “It’s encouraging to see the strong level of support from the Selwyn community to continue these services. THE RECORD July 3 - 2019

Statistics stack up for Selwyn It seems Selwyn succeeds where others fail; that is one interpretation at least of data from the latest Infometrics Regional Wellbeing Survey. The economic consultancy has revealed that out of the 66 territorial authorities surveyed, they rank Selwyn first in health wellbeing, third in income and consumption and third in social connections. The lowest ranking registered for Selwyn is 27th for environment. In the important economic indicator of jobs and earnings, Selwyn is ranked 9th. Infometrics’ Brad Olsen said Selwyn has some of the best regional wellbeing outcomes for the area’s Infometrics has examined. Olsen said the highest ranking for health was outstanding, given that it included life expectancy, drinking water quality, mental health and the suicide rate. He said Selwyn has the highest life expectancy in NZ, with a life expectancy at birth in 2017 being 84.3 years, and the second-lowest mental health presentation rate, with the second lowest proportion

of the population accessing mental health services. In 2017, only 2.2% of the Selwyn population presented to mental health services, compared to 4.7% of the national population. Selwyn also had the secondhighest median household income at the 2013 Census, with the median household earning $85,100pa. The local authorities having the worst performance over the nine categories surveyed by Infometrics were the east coast of the North Island and Northland. Olsen said that the importance of understanding and influencing wellbeing stems from its focus on outcomes for people and communities across the country. Having objective measurements of wellbeing is critical to provide a more robust assessment of progress, for both local communities and decisionmakers to consider, he said.

HORNBY

Preserving our flying heritage  by Andy Bryenton

When Hornby was a small town out in the periphery of the Christchurch metropolitan area, a parcel of land between there and the city centre caught the eye of Canterbury (NZ) Aviation Company and its founder, Sir Henry Wigram. Originally named Sockburn Airport, space grew, along with the post first world war aviation boom. Industrial-focussed Hornby, with its glass, fertiliser and meat processing works connected to twin rail lines, was the perfect neighbour for the air force base, which was to grow just next door. Since the end of operations at Wigram in 1995, however, the major attraction on the doorstep of Hornby, (now a shopping hub and gateway to the Selwyn District) has been New Zealand’s only museum dedicated to our air force. The RNZAF Museum at Wigram is a treasure house of aviation history, with displays of machines which have braved everything from enemy fire to the chilling blasts of Antarctic winds. Here, visitors can see a replica of the Britannia, New Zealand’s first military aircraft from the days of cloth wings and pilots with iron nerves. The Auster Mk7c is fitted with skis for landing gear, as it travelled to the Antarctic, while the P40e Kittyhawk was the backbone of our fighter squadron during the darkest days of World War ll. Right now, aerospace conservators

are working on the complete strip-down and rebuild of a Catalina flying boat, of the kind, used to hunt Nazi submarines. Both the Spitfire and the Mustang have pride of place here, alongside planes like the Tiger Moth, which turned from military use to pioneering aerial fertiliser spreading and seeding. The museum also serves as a

repository for decades upon decades of military aviation research, records and knowledge, helping scholars and historians piece together a complete history of our ‘flying kiwis’. For those visiting Hornby, this destination is a must-see, and it’s worth noting that without Hornby, there might never have been a Wigram air base at all. 

SPOTLIGHT ON

HORNBY

Industrial past, prosperous future When the town of Hornby was named in the colonial era, it was twinned with a namesake in Lancashire, England. The name was changed from the more prosaic ‘Southbridge Junction’ in 1878. In those times, naming a new settlement to assuage a sense of homesickness for the ‘mother country’ was the norm, but our own Hornby would grow to become very different from its namesake. Early on, the junction of the main state highway and two railway lines made this a place that was a fine seat of industry. With the ability to move materials came the giant enterprises, which were to define Hornby in the early 20th century and even into the present day. With the advent of refrigeration technology came the freezing works, where the livestock of the fertile Canterbury region was processed into food to be sent out on new, chiller-equipped steamboats. Another huge enterprise that brought fame to the region was the Crown Crystal glassworks. By the 1960s this was a hub for the craft and artistry of glassblowing and manufacture, where science combined with traditional skills. Glassblowers came from around the world to work in the extensive factory, and it was a stopover on the Queen and Prince Philip’s silver jubilee tour. Equally massive was the fertiliser plant established by Kempthorne Prosser in 1922. This facility, with its huge value to the farming enterprises of Canterbury

and beyond, has transformed over the years into modern works run by Ravensdown. In modern times, much of this heavy industry has given way to retail, with one of the region’s largest shopping malls, aptly named The Hub

constructed in the heart of Hornby. It has changed the character of the town toward service for the western suburbs of Christchurch, and also for those towns deeper within the Selwyn District. 

Kiwi trade partners say cheese  by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand remains a dominant leader in dairy farming, thanks to a variety of factors. Keeping the Kiwi ‘brand’ at the forefront of consumer’s minds is not the job of our productive herds or even of the farmers who work hard to fill those tankers and meet quality guidelines. It’s the finished products that chefs and consumers talk about, which set the gold standard. A good example is cheese. It’s a dairy product with a rich history and an even bigger world championship. On July 30, in Nantwich, Cheshire (home of the Cheshire cheese, naturally) more than 5,000 cheeses from 27 nations will be judged under a big-top sized 85,000 square foot marquee. So when Best Non-UK Cheese aged greater than 18 months award for 2018 went to NZMP Epicure, made in Lichfield, NZ, you can bet the French, Dutch, Italian and German cheesemakers paid attention — as did consumers worldwide. Our own grand prix of cheese has been run locally since 2003 by the NZ Specialist Cheesemakers Association, and it’s set the bar very high for those who craft this gourmet product. Their medals for 2019 were awarded last month, and comprise a roll-call of

innovators alongside those preserving traditional aspects of the craft. Readers may very well recognise some of the names here from their own cheeseboard selections Puhoi Valley, Kapiti, Mahoe Farmhouse, Over the Moon, Barrys Bay, Cartwheel Creamery and a long list of others all took home gold medals for their offerings. All this competition is good news, not just for those with good taste in dining. New Zealand cheeses are recognised internationally for their quality, boosting the profile of the entire dairy industry by showing that we as a farming nation can add substantial value as well as leading in a primary-industry role when it comes to supply of milk and milk products. As people’s tastes become more refined, and it becomes easier to order international foods online, that niche skill will be sure to pay dividends. 

Hence a new Mini bigger than the old Honda Civic, a new Honda Civic nearly as big as the old BMW 3 series, and a BMW 3 series so big they have slotted in a new 2 series underneath in the lineup to deliver that zippy, fresh feeling of owning a small, nimble car. No surprises — people love them. Which is why Mercedes have made a sedan from their popular A-Class and equipped it with the kind of performance you may remember from such hits as the spicier 2

190e models of yesteryear, with their lovely chassis and suspension and a bit of fire under the hood. Witness, then, the A 200, with more than 160 horsepower from a 1.3 engine, 0–100 in eight seconds and an interior from space. It’s no insult to mention the 190e here, even despite the gulf of years. When Benz devised the original E it was designed as an entry level, sportier, smaller Merc for those who wanted quality but didn’t want to park the Imperial Star Destroyer sized W126 S-Class. At the time, it was radical. In fact, the Cosworth version has similar power and acceleration as the new A-Class, which is great, because it’s

IF IT’S MADE OF

exactly enough to be fun. The A 200 is still revolutionary, thanks to a cockpit that’s all bright, wide touchscreens, and big improvements to ride quality and gearbox response over the old A-Class. So, a smooth ride, as one would expect from the inventors of the motor car, a host of electronic connectivity and comfort options, and a footprint both in terms of fuel usage and parking space, which is smaller than the smallest C-Class. The big rival for this baby Benz is certainly BMW’s 2 series but if it comes to a duel, wouldn’t you rather see the M sport version of the 2 battle AMG’s boosted and fettled A-Class? I’d volunteer to drive both. 

Invest in an auto future past The single best thing you can invest in to guarantee a return on your automotive investment, even if you only buy the most prosaic of commuter machines, is a shed. The cars of yesterday, found in good condition in today’s sheds, are commanding eye-popping prices. We’re not talking Bugatti Royales and Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts here. Cars you once chuckled at with mild derision are now massive earners, thanks to a trip through the shed time machine. Did you own a Nissan, Datsun, Toyota, Mitsubishi or Triumph in the 1970s or 1980s? Did you scrap it when something newer, with a nice CD player and 18-inch alloys came into style? Then don’t look at Trade Me, or you might need a box of tissues. Looking back, life is a litany of potential classics gone too early to their grave. From a 1981 Mitsubishi Lancer reversed through a garage door by a close relative, now worth $7,000, to a Triumph 2500 picked up free of charge from a farm, which would be worth $5,000 if it was not condemned to rust outdoors, to a 1980 Nissan Skyline turbo unpurchased for $1,000 and now worth ten times that figure; we all have the same tales. What separates those who bemoan not keeping that old Valiant or Beetle and those cashing in is one thing. Shed space. If you are still in possession of a classic, or even just something you consider to be old, think about the

practicality of creating a do-it-yourself ‘barn find’ for the future. When your 1994 Celica or your first edition CR-X give up due to some minor parts failure, don’t consign them to be crushed

up into a little cube and made into airline cutlery. Build an extension to the garage, drain out the fluids, wrap them in tarps and wait. If anyone complains, point

them to those figures listed before. In a few years, what you now swear at as a heap of antiquated junk may well pay for a nice holiday abroad or even a new car, which, by then, will likely be electric. 
