In for the long haul

It’s hard to imagine a time before the white van tradesman’s office …

This follows a speed limit review council completed last year in which some responses called for a lower speed limit outside schools. “As part of the council discussion, it was decided to review all Selwyn schools,” council’s asset engineer transportation, Mark Chamberlain, said. Mr Chamberlain said the three-month review would involve directly engaging with schools to see what they want. “Proposed speed limits will be based on feedback we receive from the

schools and assessed in accordance with the NZ Transport Agency Speed Management guide. “At present there are no school speed zones in Selwyn,” Mr Chamberlain said. The district’s police and school principals have welcomed the council initiative. Rolleston-based Senior Sergeant, Grant Stewart, said police are pleased to see the review happening and would cooperate fully with the review team. “The safety of young people in the

community is paramount, and it is good to see that the council is proactive in promoting and improving that. “We have members of the police who attend the council’s monthly road safety meetings. We also have, in Rolleston School, the second largest primary in New Zealand, so anything we can do with the council to improve road safety around schools we will fully support.” continued on page 3…

PINUS RADIATA

Radiata pine is our most popular plantation species. With good reason. It grows faster in New Zealand than in its native California. Some forests have been harvested five times and are growing better than ever. As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

New ambulance for Selwyn Council to review speed limits

…continued from front page

u by Kent Caddick

St John in Selwyn will soon have a new ambulance on the road thanks to the combined efforts of the district’s Lions clubs.

p Selwyn Central St John chair John Sunckell (second from left) receives a cheque for $180,000 for the purchase of a new ambulance from Malvern Lions President Tony Mitchell

Lions clubs from Ellesmere, Malvern, Rolleston, Selwyn and Halswell, which are part of the Zone 8 Lions, along with the Christchurch Chinese Lions Club, collectively raised $180,000 to go toward the purchase of a new ambulance, which will be stationed at the St John base in Rolleston. John Sunckell, chairman of Selwyn Central St John, said they were grateful for the support of the Lions’ clubs. “We are absolutely delighted with the Lions’ effort, which will be a big help to our ability to provide good service,” Mr Sunckell said. “We will endeavour to have the new ambulance ready to be consecrated at a special service to be held in Christchurch, this September. This will show the Lions’ emblem and acknowledge contributing trusts and clubs.” Zone 8 Lions project chair, Bill Pickering, said the six clubs had worked hard for two years to raise over $70,000 on their own. “Three hundred members put in around 3,500 hours, parking cars, selling pea straw, catering for special events, running bowling and bridge tournaments,

selling firewood and numerous other events to raise the funds. “A $90,000 grant was also obtained from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in Chicago, which ensured the success of the project. LCIF has also donated over $1 million to Christchurch city to replace community facilities destroyed in our two major earthquakes.” He said the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust, here in New Zealand also contributed and they were especially grateful to the Rollestonbased Westland dairy company for its support. “Westland, whose board of directors’ chairman, Peter Morrison, is a local dairy farmer, contributed $4,000 to the project, demonstrating their commitment to local community needs and to the health and safety of their employees. “It is very satisfying to see the ambulance would soon be on the road and we want to thank everyone who has been involved with the project, which fits our Lions motto of ‘We Serve’ perfectly.” ¢

The principal of Rolleston Primary, Andrew Morrell, has greeted the news with delight. He sees it as a positive move by the council and is eager to be part of the review. “Traffic volumes in Rolleston are increasing constantly, and children out on school crossings and my staff monitoring them are finding it more and more challenging. So, anything to help them in that setting is wonderful. Great.” Clearview Primary’s principal, Robb Rush, is another to endorse the council’s review. He has seen his school roll climb to 735 since it opened in 2010, and although he doesn’t see the inevitable increase in traffic as a major problem yet, he, like the council, is taking steps to stop it becoming one. “One initiative already taken by the Clearview Primary was to form a working group in collaboration with the council and police to address the question of road congestion around the school. “This involved a large amount of public consultation in 2016 and resulted in a comprehensive travel management plan for Clearview, including identification of travel times, modes of transport, etc. “We found that upwards of 50% of our students arrived at school by vehicle, so it is absolutely crucial and urgent that collectively we do everything we can to ensure drivers are really vigilant around schools. We are right behind this review and

p Clearview’s principal, Rob Rush is looking forward to working with council.

look forward to working with council on it.” Mark Chamberlain, who will lead the review for the council, says the review is part of a suite of initiatives the council has taken to improve road safety around schools. “Selwyn District Council employs a dedicated school road safety coordinator who engages with our schools to develop customised school travel plans. In urban areas such as Rolleston, the focus of these travel plans is on behavioural change and to encourage the promotion of active transport becoming part of school culture and reducing congestion at the school gate.” Mr Chamberlain said the planned review would also include public consultation on speed limits generally, but particularly the 70-kilometre speed limits around townships and the Speed Limits By-law itself. ¢

Lincoln Hub, the Lincoln University initiative which provides a forum for the melding of minds from the agricultural, sciences and academic sectors, has changed its name and is offering even more for sector groups and individuals. Now called Blinc Innovation, the organisation has opened a new workshop facility, Blinc Workshop, on the university campus where, as Blinc’s chief executive Toni Laming puts it: “Farmers, growers, agri-advisers, entrepreneurs, students and scientists can locate and connect. “We know the future of work is social. People want places to connect and work alongside others. However, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) being so prevalent in some of our core agricultural industries, it is often hard to create the collegial community that is so effective,” she said. “Blinc Workshop workshop is more than just a desk. It is a place to hold meetings, seminars and workshops, or just catch up with people you want to connect within a professional and supportive environment.”

Ms Laming said the new facility had already been used and had proven to be highly successful. “A local start-up, Anteater, used Blinc Workshop to share their journey from an idea created at a startup weekend organised at Lincoln, which then led to a lively workshop discussion on the future of insects in our diets and how New Zealand can work toward creating a high-value export industry,” she said. “Start-ups are hard when you are sitting at the kitchen table or alone in a converted garage, so Blinc Workshop provides a real alternative and brings people together with similar passions and interests.” For more information about Blinc or its new workshop space go to the organisation’s website blincinnovation.com. Toni Laming says that Blinc offers a range of options and is happy to discuss any requirement.

Jonty, Jac, MacK, Michael, Alijah and Tehiahia each received The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. The award, comprising a certificate and pin, was presented to them by Selwyn mayor, Sam Broughton. This follows an adventurous and sometimes tortuous hike, which saw the super six, and support staff, trekking 18 kilometres over three days from Taylors Mistake to Boulder Bay, Godley gun emplacement, and Brighton Beach from the pier to Southshore Spit. described the hike as challenging but rewarding. “The students worked hard supporting and encouraging each other during the three days, proving to all — including themselves — that they are resilient, strong-willed and physically tough,” he said. He described Waitaha as a wonderful character school and, for him, a personal privilege to be working with their students. “This award is the culmination of three years of hard but deeply satisfying work that now receives international recognition,” he said. Tehiahia said he liked meeting the mayor and intends to wear his Duke of Edinburgh pin every day to school. It is the same for Jac who, with obvious pride, also plans to wear his pin every day. ¢

A great time for a good cause is the promise being made by the West Melton Young Farmers Club as it sets about organising its first-ever Shearing Shed Party.

Local business people were recently treated to a high tea presented and prepared by catering students at Rolleston College.

The year 10 cafe apprentice class students have been studying hospitality and cooking, using the state-of-the-art kitchen at the college, and held the event as an opportunity to practise their newlylearned catering, presentation and barista skills. Last term the students hosted residents of the Summerset Retirement Village, and this time invited business members of the community, who normally do not find themselves in a school environment. The 20 guests experienced what happens at the college, and enjoyed hearing from two students who presented their Quest projects. Student Katey Knight spoke about her quest of organising the Rolleston College Fete, which became a successful community event, and student Dexton Green spoke on his quest of learning the science behind how planes fly. The visitors completed their visit with a feast of sausage rolls, cupcakes, black forest fudge and freshly made club sandwiches. “It was a positive experience, one we hope to repeat in the future. p Tai Tapu’s new $4.6 million community centre at Rhodes Park was the backdrop for the recent Canterbury Country rugby final won by the local Waihora club

The first major public event to be held at the new Tai Tapu Community Centre was the Waihora Rugby Club’s club day on Saturday. The facility, located at Rhodes Park, is a community-driven initiative, which replaces two earthquake damaged and outdated halls in the township. The community centre is now accepting bookings from anyone who wishes to use the facility; however, exterior work including landscaping will be completed over the next few months, as some of the work can’t be completed during winter. Selwyn District Council’s major projects manager, John Reid, said an

official opening ceremony is planned for mid-August. He said it was exciting to see the new facility operational and hopes the community will start using it straight away. “The new Tai Tapu Community Centre is a brilliant community asset, and it’s ready for everyone to enjoy,” Mr Reid said. The new facility features three community rooms with a total capacity in excess of 500 people, and each room has access to kitchen and bar facilities. It also has changing rooms, public toilets and a large roofed outdoor courtyard. ¢

A TRANSPARENT AND ENJOYABLE BUILDING EXPERIENCE When you build with Reynolds Construction you know you are dealing directly with the owner of the company who will be building your home, which director Craig Reynolds says gives clients a distinct advantage over building with some of the larger group building companies. “When you build with us you’re not dealing with a salesperson, you’re dealing with a qualified manager who will actually be doing the work. You know you’re going to get an honest answer not a sales pitch,” he says. Another advantage of building with an owner/ operator company is that the client is not paying for any large overheads. Craig says this enables Reynolds Construction to easily compete on price with the larger group building companies. “Our work comes from word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied clients,” he says Reynolds Construction has been building new homes, and renovating and extending existing homes, throughout Canterbury for more than 10 years. Craig has 30 years industry experience, completing his apprenticeship with his father here in Canterbury. He went into business for himself at the age of 20. He heads a team of qualified and experienced tradesmen, who are known for their high level of workmanship. “Plus they’re all good guys,” says Craig. “They’re approachable, friendly as well as experienced and versatile tradesmen.”

They build a full range of homes, from the more modest up to high-end architecturally-designed homes. Craig works with many of Christchurch’s leading architects and has built over 300 homes in and around the region. Reynolds Construction will price clients’ own plans. They will also arrange architectural plans to be designed and consented ready for commencement. Renovations and extensions are another speciality at Reynolds Construction. They work on homes of all description, from older character homes to modern houses, building and renovating in a style that meets the client’s requirements and is sympathetic to the style of the home. Reynolds Construction is also one of the last companies involved with the EQC repair programme having completed over 200 repairs including multi unit projects.

Clients are kept fully informed throughout the building process. Reynolds will monitor the build continuously with a range of quality control check lists as the project develops.

“Our motto is making your building experience and enjoyable one and that is what we aim to do,” - Craig Reynolds Craig and his team take great pride in their work and realize the trust that the client invests with them. “There’s nothing anonymous about Reynolds Construction.”

Craig says the variety of projects they have worked on over the years have been extensive and diverse. “It all depends on what comes in over the phone and whatever it is, we can do it.” The team have also worked on numerous education projects, building classrooms, additions and extensions for schools throughout Canterbury. Home and land packages are also available at Reynolds Construction. They will manage the build from start to completion, including the design process, which Craig says makes building a stressfree process for the client.

It’s hard to imagine a time before the white van tradesman’s office, mobile workshop, rolling tool chest and classroom for generations of apprentices, not to mention the weapon of choice for couriers facing the urban maze. There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers, who

Sailing into the new season by Andy Bryenton

Here’s a fun fact about the Vikings, those far-sailing explorers and reavers who terrorised the British Isles centuries ago. Before setting out on a voyage, each one of those huge hairy warriors had to sit down and knit part of the sail for their longship out of wool. If the thought of a big axe-swinging warlord gripping a pair of knitting needles seems funny, bear in mind that it was a necessary task to even get the voyage started. Sometimes, it takes a whole lot of people to pitch in to get things sorted. Furthermore, that takes us neatly to a different kind of Viking — Yamaha’s new model of their big farm-capable sideby-side. Or in this case, side-by-side-by-side. Just like the old sea warriors who gave it its name, the Yamaha Viking packs in ranks of burly troops — it has seating for no less than six. That’s not to say that space for cargo is limited, either. The rear tray of this big

machine is the size of a pallet, and it’s beefy enough to ferry the whole team and their kit to pretty much anywhere, on or off the beaten track. This is achieved with a classic combination of wide, knobbly tyres, a generous ride height, independent suspension and 686cc of overhead cam, fourstroke grunt. The long wheelbase — a necessity when it comes to fitting in six comfy seats, each with its own headrest — means that there’s a danger of getting ‘beached’ on lumpy terrain. However, the rails of the Viking’s tough frame slide off, and there’s something uncanny p Yamaha’s Viking off-roader seats six in comfort as well as hauling tools for the crew about how much grip those wheels can find, even when the Viking foreign shores. Similarly, the Yamaha and a handful of wrenches. This year’s Viking boasts supreme ease of access Viking builds on a solid platform and is fully crewed. Another fun fact about the old to its engine for service — flip up the cements its place in a very particular market niche. Norsemen is that their longships were tray and there everything is. That means it’s easy to clean mud If you have a large team who modular — easy to take apart to stow for the winter, and easy to upend to and dirt away from vital parts, easy to have to get into the back blocks for create a rough and ready shelter on change filters and check fluids, and hard work, this is the top machine for simple to maintain without downtime the task.

Thank you for helping your community

Fall Zones

Notice and Growth limit zones

To all of you who have had your trees trimmed before they became a problem, thank you for keeping all the farms working and families in your community warm, happy and healthy. You can be proud of the fact that you kept the local cowsheds milking, water pumps pumping and sheep shearers shearing. You may not think that what you’ve done has had much impact on your neighbours, but from all of us here at Orion, we just want to say thank you. We’re not exaggerating.

Where do I start?

On our network, 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are caused by trees — including vegetation — coming into contact with power lines. Other than this, fire damage to property from branches sparking in dry conditions and serious injury from electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines are also possible consequences of not maintaining your trees.

Before you begin, remember to keep yourself, and those around you, safe. We recognise that not everyone is experienced in tree trimming and are happy to advise you on what to do. We can arrange for trees near power lines to be trimmed at your expense, however we recommend you hire professionals to safely carry out the work.

How close is too close? While most damage is caused by trees falling on power lines, significant risk exists from trees merely touching them. This risk increases the higher the voltage of the power line. The minimum distances that must be maintained between trees and power lines, as defined in the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, are outlined in the diagrams above. All vegetation should be kept out of the growth limit zone and preferably the notice zone. Sometimes it may not be practical to have a tree trimmed at the rate at which it grows and unfortunately, this means it may need to be removed. Other situations may require trees to be removed, most commonly when they are at a high risk of falling due to disease or adverse weather events.

If you or someone working for you intends to work within four metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from Orion before you start. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.

Will I be fined if I don’t comply? If a cut or trim notice is given to you and you fail to have the tree trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim without a reasonable excuse, this is an offence. This will make you liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000. If the offence continues, you will be liable for a further fine of not more than $500 for every day or part day during which the offence continues.

Orion New Zealand owns and operates the electricity distribution network in central Canterbury between the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers and from Canterbury coast to Arthur’s Pass.
