The ‘Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day’ is scheduled for November with all proceeds from the day going to support the St John Ambulance Service in Selwyn. The man behind the event is Rolleston local John Winchester who has put together a committee of like-minded local car enthusiasts to help get the show up and running. “I have been overwhelmed with the commitment from everyone that has put their hand up through what so far has been a word of mouth process,” Mr Winchester said. “I have been bowled over by all these great locals, including

the support from Rolleston and Districts Lions, that are chipping in together to get the inaugural event off the ground” says John. One of those to put their hand up to help out is another Rolleston local Steve Wright. “We now have a great format for the day outlined and it is time to start sourcing sponsors and beginning to get the word out,” Mr Wright said. “Between the local support and car club interest the Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day is looking to be a fantastic annual community event. We really need some key sponsors to come

on board to ensure the success of this massive event. “We have over 600 cars on the contact list, heaps of events for kids planned on the day and the best thing is that any profits raised out of the day go to help out our friends at St John.” The Selwyn District Council has provided an event grant to help to get off the ground. Rolleston based district councillor Craig Watson said he has been talked into helping out by Mr Winchester, his neighbour. continued on page 3 …

The RSA’s 2017 Poppy Appeal raised $1.9 million in donations nationwide. RSA National President BJ Clark said the RSA’s ability to support those impacted by service relied on public donation. “Poppy Appeal funds are used exclusively to provide health, welfare and support to New Zealand’s current and former service personnel and their families. “We are grateful for the fantastic public support, for all our volunteers who contribute their time and effort, and for our corporate partners who contribute so generously to the Poppy Appeal. “They make it possible to care for those who have served our country at home and overseas, whether or not they are members of the RSA.” Mr Clark said the funds will assist in many ways, including assisting recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI), helping the families of current and former military personnel deal with health or hardship issues, or assisting those who have served rejoin civilian life once their time in uniform is done.

p Selwyn residents who haven’t received a voter pack in the mail aren’t eligible to vote in this year’s general election

Over three million personalised enrolment packs were sent to voters across the country last week to check they are correctly enrolled. “If you haven’t received an enrolment update pack it means you aren’t correctly enrolled or need to update your details,” Chief Electoral Officer Alicia Wright said. “Every year thousands of voters are removed from the electoral roll because they’ve changed address but haven’t updated their details with us. “So if they’ve moved house, they need to make sure they’re enrolled at the right address.”

Ms Wright is also encouraging Selwyn residents to contact other family members to ensure they are enrolled to have their say in this September’s election. Voters who are correctly enrolled by August 23 will be sent a personalised EasyVote card in September which will make voting quicker. People can enrol or update their details at www.elections.org.nz, pick up an enrolment form at a PostShop, or request a form by calling 0800 36 76 56 or texting their name and address to 3676. ¢

West Melton School has farewelled its longest serving staff member with a special assembly recently.

Mary Hyde switched off her computer for the final time last Friday after spending the last 25 years as the school’s office manager. Mrs Hyde said she took on the role in 1992 while she was a parent helper at the school where her three children were going. “I had been working as a PA and the skills were similar, although a school is a completely different environment to working in a commercial office,” she said. “The thing I have enjoyed the most about the job is the people, and there have been thousands of them over the years. “When I started there were just seven teachers and the principal, and now there is over 40 on the staff.” Over the last couple of years she has also been the PA to current principal Sue Jackson, who paid tribute to Mrs Hyde’s contribution to the school over a quarter 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836 darfieldpreschool@xtra.co.nz ï

“It has been incredible showing up to these shed meetings with 20 or 30 folk from all different backgrounds with totally different lives but a common interest in all things with a motor,” Cr Watson said. “Honestly, I think this event is going to grow each year and become a feature event for the district. I hope grassroots initiatives such as this put to bed the ridiculous mutterings that there is no community spirit in Rolleston.” The Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day will be held on Sunday November 26, opposite the new roundabout by Rolleston College and will feature a wide variety of vehicles

including classic cars, muscle cars, motorbikes, tractors, luxury cars, trucks and sports cars. “If it has a motor and an owner who wants to display their pride and joy, we want to see it on show,” Mr Wright said. Entertainment on the day will include bouncy castles, food trucks, emergency service displays and defence representation is also on the cards. Student awarded scholarship

Wandering stock The New Zealand Transport Agency is urging rural residents in Selwyn to ensure their stock are safely fenced.

Design student Kirsty Cochrane has been awarded the 2017 West Melton Scholarship.

p Wandering stock can be extremely dangerous for motorists p Selwyn deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall with the 2017 West Melton Scholarship winner Kirsty Cochrane

The former West Melton School pupil was presented with the scholarship by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall at a recent ceremony at West Melton School. The scholarship is awarded annually to a former student of West Melton School who is a final year student enrolled in a tertiary institution. Kirsty is in her final year of a Degree in Spatial Design at AUT. She said ‘spatial design’ is best defined as ‘architecture without the engineering’, and is especially interested in designing for disadvantaged people.

Fun,

Kirsty recognised her parents for encouraging her to follow her interests and credited her teachers at Riccarton High School and West Melton for their guidance and encouragement. Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall said it was very important to recognise excellence because well trained people are essential to the community. Applications are called for later in the year, and the West Melton Scholarship and Awards Committee meets in February to assess the applications. ¢

The warning follows two recent crashes involving horses wandering on roads. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Police are reminding Selwyn property owners of their responsibility to keep animals safely fenced. NZTA Journey Manager Lee Wright says wandering stock pose serious safety risks to all road users, not only on the state highway network, but also on local roads. “Animals on highways, or on the edge of highways, present a significant hazard for anyone driving and there is the potential for serious injury, and even fatal crashes, as a result.

Golden Road to Samarkand

“The Transport Agency is reminding rural property owners that they are liable for any damage caused by their animals and if the animals cause a crash and negligence is proven, the livestock owner may be prosecuted. “It is important property and livestock owners are aware of their responsibilities and take relevant measures to ensure these animals remain adequately fenced in for the sake of the animals and all road users,” Ms Wright says. Motorists and residents can report wandering stock to the Police’s ‘Star 555’ (*555) free cell phone service, or for an emergency, 111. ¢

Games place looms

 by Kent Caddick

The 16-year-old World Para Swimming series swimmer will compete in Berlin this week, guided by Ben Close, head coach at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston and a New Zealand Para Swimming team coach. The Berlin competition is the final World Series event and will determine overall winners of world titles. At the event, Celyn will receive an International Classification, which means he will be eligible to qualify for the Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast next year, in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley. Edwards currently holds 21 national records in his Paralympic S8 classification, across all strokes and multiple distances. “This is Celyn’s first time representing New Zealand and it will be an opportunity for him to represent not only New Zealand, but Selwyn, at top international level,” coach Ben Close said. “It’s very exciting for both of us to be part of a high performance

p An artist’s impression of the new $206 million research facility to be built at Lincoln University

The proposed $206 million facility for learning and research to be based at the university’s Lincoln campus had been developed jointly by Lincoln University and AgResearch. The Government has agreed to provide Lincoln University with $85 million to support its construction, and has approved the project’s detailed business case. Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Pollard said the Government’s investment in this facility is not only a major step forward in promoting new value in New Zealand’s primary sector economy, but represents a significant sign of confidence in the future of Lincoln University. “This new facility offers students new ways of learning and employment opportunities for those interested in environmental and land-based sciences, and advances Lincoln University’s mission to be a major global leader in land-based learning and research,” he said. AgResearch chief executive Tom Richardson said the Lincoln facility is part of AgResearch’s programme

of campus development across the country and will provide its largest South Island base. “It is pleasing to see the university’s part of the funding equation now in place following funding approved for AgResearch’s part in the joint facility last year. “There is now real momentum for the partnership with Lincoln University as joint owners of the new facility and for DairyNZ as a tenant. “The design plans we’ve come up with so far confirm to me that we are going to have a world class facility starting construction later this year. “Not only does this joint facility signal a new era for us in working together to produce better science and education, it demonstrates a commitment to delivering to a new standard for the landbased industries that are so crucial to New Zealand’s economy and quality of life ,” Dr Richardson said. The Lincoln University AgResearch Joint Facility is scheduled for practical completion by 2019. Early works will start in the coming weeks on the site. ¢

Izone makes short-list

ADVERTORIAL

Success in Izone Izone Southern Business Hub in Rolleston has a reputation for catering to big industrial users. While big industrial users such as Westland Milk, The Warehouse Logistics and PGG Wrightsons dominate the park, a growing number of smaller business are also being drawn to Izone. Many of these smaller occupiers provide services in support of the larger industries and have established themselves at 35 Illinois Drive in a development marketed by Knight Frank. Located on the corner of Izone Drive and Illinois Drive, 35 Illinois Drive is now completely leased to a wide range of tenants. These tenants have been attracted to the new, high-quality and flexible space, providing work areas for a range of different businesses. The variety of tenants now on site include: BNS Design and Print, Shermac Aluminium and Joinery, Vulcan Talent Recruitment, Sushi Factory, Posh Paws dog grooming, Rolleston Engineering Supplies, CrossFit Rolleston and more. Myles Addington, Industrial Sales and Leasing Broker at Knight Frank, says that tenants have been attracted to 35 Illinois Drive because of the high-quality warehouse and office space, ease of use and simplified lease terms. “The simplified lease terms are appealing to tenants as they include gross rentals, meaning the landlord pays building outgoings, resulting in no hidden costs for businesses, and flexible lease terms, aiming to make things simple for the tenant,” Myles says. 35 Illinois Drive has been effective in creating a micro-business hub within the larger Izone business community and the wider-growing Rolleston area. Following the success of 35 Illinois Drive, 25 Illinois

Drive is now under development and due for completion this December. This new development is again aimed at a variety of tenants and is being developed with a range of different size buildings to give existing tenants the flexibility of moving to bigger space. “A small number of office suites will be built at 25 Illinois Drive, with the balance being small to large warehouses, manufacturing and storage spaces. Built by Hanham and Philp, these quality concrete tilt-slab units will provide work space that has high amenity value.” Myles says. 25 Illinois Drive is situated near the Izone Café and the Port of Tauranga’s inland port. Izone is New Zealand’s largest industrial development, located on State Highway One, just 12 minutes’ drive from Christchurch’s Hornby industrial area and only 20 minutes’ drive from Christchurch International Airport. The Christchurch Southern Motorway will start at Izone and connect resident businesses to the airport and Port Lyttelton via four-laned highways once complete.

Rolleston’s Izone Southern Business Hub has been named as a finalist in the 2017 Local Government New Zealand Excellence Awards.

p Rolleston’s Izone is on the short list for a prestigious national award

The awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate outstanding council leadership initiatives and the key role that local government plays in local communities. The Selwyn District Councilowned Izone is one of five finalists in the Excellence Awards for Best Practice Contribution to Local Economic Development. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said being a finalist for an LGNZ excellence award is a testament to the vision which the council had 17 years ago to set aside land for businesses to

establish and provide more employment opportunities for Selwyn residents. “Those that began the project can be very proud of the impact that Izone has had, and will continue to have on our district and the families who live here,” Mayor Broughton said. The Izone development is New Zealand’s largest fully-consented and development-ready industrial park with some 70 businesses employing over 1,200 people. Another 800 jobs are forecast as development work is completed by land purchasers. ¢

Greenpark was no match for the Lincoln juggernaut which ran out comfortable winners 70-40 to open a three-point gap over Broadfield at the top of the table. Broadfield was put under pressure in the first quarter of its match against Southbridge but quickly established its dominance in the second quarter before running away with the match

75-53. The youthful Rolleston side put in probably its best performance of its premier season so far but in the end couldn’t account for Halswell, which went on to win the match 59-43. Term Two Highlights. It has been a busy and exciting term at Rolleston College. There have been many individual achievements from Jesse Stevens gaining our first scholarship for her Quest project through to Willow Mountford excelling in the regional Trampolining Competition, to name but two. This report highlights a selection of what has taken place at Rolleston College during our Term Two journey. As we are a new school many of these highlights are ‘firsts’ for us.

COMMUNITY Developing a sense of community spirit and responsibility has been a key feature of this term. Much of this has been coordinated by our ‘Amplify Your Impact’ learners. They have coordinated events such as Pink Shirt Day and the ‘Be yourself-think for yourself’ initiative identifying the need for young people to make sensible and responsible decisions.

It has been wonderful to see how enthusiastic our leaners are to promote positive decision making both within our school and in the wider community. To help develop our young leaders we recently hosted senior leaders form Middleton Grange to run workshops with our student leaders here at the college.

Pink Shirt Day

LOCAL SCHOOLS

RED CROSS JOURNEY

Another community highlight has been continuing to work with the local primary schools to develop strong links between us. This has

The ‘Red Cross Journey’ was another community focused event that 50 of our learners participated in. 10 teams – including a teachers’ team signed up to take part in the challenge to follow the steps of former Syrian refugees, the Tamim family, who now live in Palmerston North. This initiative fitted perfectly with the terms focus on movement and our school values as well as encouraging the learners to think of others and live a healthy lifestyle.

Reading Programme

included our learners running a basketball tournament in our gym for Clearview and Rolleston Primary students and assisting in sports events at Clearview. Extending our ‘Rolleston Reads’ programme has also been successful as our learners have assisted in reading programmes with Clearview and we have also hosted Lemonwood Grove for a Science based roadshow here at the college.

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY Another feature of this term has been the increasing development of strong relationships with a number of groups and organisations. This has included four of our learners addressing 80 of the academic leaders at the University of Canterbury on the topic of how young people learn.

SPORT Rolleston College is now participating in a wide range of sporting competitions. These include the traditional codes such as rugby, football, basketball, netball, swimming and hockey as well as less well-known activities such as trampolining. It is great to see so many learners participating with enthusiasm in a range of sports and the mature way in which they have conducted themselves both in victory and defeat. Special mention goes to the Boys Basketball B Team [pictured right] who are currently unbeaten in their competition.

OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM We realise that learning does not only take place within a classroom so we have had learners involved in a number of community based activities from planting Daffodils at Foster Park through to participating in the schools annual Mud Run.

Bulb Planting

Mud Run

ACTIVE LEARNING One of our aims for this term has been to make learning come alive in the classroom. This has seen our learners participate in a wide range of activities covering all areas of the curriculum. Some of these include, the building and launching of some impressive rockets, an activity that combined Maths, Science and Technology.

Rocket Launching

We celebrated Book Week with a number of activities as part of our ‘Rolleston Reads’ programme, this included a number of reading related activities and culminated in learners dressing as one of their favourite characters from a book. Our learners are also being exposed to a range of physical exercise experiences from the more traditional Physical Education programmes through to Haka and Yoga. In between all of these very active experiences, our learners have also been working there way through the curriculum as they complete a wide range of topics from Fossils and Japanese through to International Foods and everything in-between.

The key feature of this term has been that learning is all about active participation and that we learn through doing, it certainly has been an active term.

A group of Lincoln University students have officially opened a new playground they designed for a local preschool.

Lesley Elliot to speak Lesley Elliot from the ‘Sophie Elliot Foundation’ will be giving a speech in Lincoln this month. Mrs Elliot set up the foundation in recognition of her 22-year-old daughter who was brutally murdered in 2008 by her ex-boyfriend. The event, ‘Open Our Eyes’, is being put on by the Selwyn Lions Club. Selwyn Lions’ first vice-president Alison Benefield said Lesley Elliot will speak on violence prevention through education, awareness and

empowerment and her speech will be suitable for teenagers. “As well as Mrs Elliot speaking there will also be market stalls, raffles and entertainment with one lucky person winning a weekend at Hanmer Springs.” The event will be held at the Lincoln Events Centre on Friday, July 28 starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are $10 each and for more information contact Alison Benefield at alijoh@outlook.co.nz or phone 027 641 9238.

p Lincoln University Early Childhood Centre children enjoy their new playground under the guidance of LUECC coordinator Marilyn Montgomery

The students from Lincoln’s School of Landscape Architecture spent a year on the project for the Lincoln University Early Childhood Centre (LUECC), which involved preparing plans for a landscape concept and planting design, then constructing a sandpit and wet play area. They also produced a mud kitchen which the children have renamed the ‘Master Chef’ kitchen. LUECC

coordinator Marilyn Montgomery said the project first came about when the centre identified a need to relocate the sandpit from its current position. “We are participants in Enviroschools which is grounded in environmental education,” she said. “When looking to redesign our outdoor area, we wanted to reach out to the community as participants in the children’s learning.” ¢ ADVERTORIAL

Fencing on the block The New Zealand Transport Agency and Police have recently issued a warning to rural residents in Selwyn to ensure any livestock is well fenced in. a fence line. A gateway in the corner of a paddock is easier to shift stock through. Gateways also need to be big enough for vehicles and farm machinery to fit through. Fencing can be dangerous. Be careful with wire strainers and any wire under tension. When handling wire always wear safety eyewear and protective clothing including suitable gloves and steel capped boots. Fences don’t last forever — at some point they’ll need fixing or replacing. Catch problems early and you can repair them but leave things long enough and replacement will be your only practical option. Regular maintenance extends the life of a fence. Over time wires get loose, they also slacken off/tighten up as temperature changes or the ground dries out then gets wet again during the year. The decision whether to repair or rebuild fence lines will depend on affordability. Generally speaking, completely replacing completely decrepit

fences is usually less expensive than repairing them. What type of fencing? When fencing, various materials and methods can be combined to provide a suitable fence for any situation. There are several types of stock fences commonly used in New Zealand. 7-9 Wire post and batten Used commonly for boundary fencing and as a general all purpose fence. It

The warning follows a couple of accidents around Canterbury in recent months in which drivers have been involved in serious accidents with wandering stock. Most lifestyle properties will need fencing, especially if you’re keeping livestock. You can either elect to do this fencing yourself, or use a contractor. While there is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from doing your own fencing, it isn’t as easy as it looks, and the best advice is to start with some professional help. Get a contractor in, work with them, watch and learn. One way to save money but still feel a sense of involvement. Think carefully about what type or height of fence you put in. Conventional height fences are always a safe bet as you may change the type of livestock you have in the coming years. Gate placement can make a difference as it is often difficult to get animals to go through gates in the middle of

is strong, durable, and secure. Posts are usually four metres apart, and five battens are spaced evenly between the posts. Although one of the most expensive and labour intensive fences, it will contain sheep, cattle and horses adequately in most cases. Multi-wire electric Depending on the type of stock being contained, different number of wires can be used, which are then electrified. Posts are spaced further apart, sometimes up to eight or ten metres between posts. A wide range of both wooden and steel posts can be used. Electric fences create a mental barrier to stock. The shock that they get from the fence acts as a deterrent in future escape efforts. This is opposed to the post and batten fence which simply provides a physical barrier. Because electric fences require fewer materials, they are usually cheaper, easier and faster to erect, however security and longevity can be sacrificed. Sheep netting Sheep netting is wire netting, about a metre high, with wooden posts. It is ideal for sheep, and other small or young stock such as calves. It is also

adequate for large stock when one or more outriggers are added to either the top or side of the netting. Deer fencing operates on exactly the same principles as sheep netting, except on a larger scale. Post and rail Used commonly with horses as it is highly visible. Spooked horses have been severely injured after running through wire fences, particularly fences using high tensile wire. Most horses are kept within wire fences however, so it comes down to a personal choice. Post and rail fencing is also used around houses and driveways as it is

aesthetically pleasing. Posts are usually two metres apart, with between three and four wooden rails. It can be difficult to get it looking straight and level without a high level of expertise. Post and rail fences are very secure with larger animals, especially when accompanied with an electric wire to prevent stock rubbing. It has a high cost per metre when compared to other fences. Temporary and semipermanent fences Semi-permanent — There are a wide range of materials available, such as electric tape and poly-wires, varying in different sizes and thicknesses. As

well there is a range of semi-permanent type steel posts, such as Warratahs and Kiwitahs. Often used on lease blocks, or as a quick fix option. This type of fence is very cheap and easy to build. The disadvantages are the deterioration of the fence over a few years, and these fences require more regular maintenance. Temporary — Electric plastic tape usually wound up on a hand held reel. It is used mainly for cattle and horses to subdivide an existing paddock, usually on a day by day basis. It uses ‘electric fence standards’ which are lightweight and about a metre in height. They have a steel peg at the bottom which you press into the ground with your foot and a loop to hold the electric tape at the top. They are put up, and taken down, at the pace at which you can walk. They are the least secure of any type of fence and require a good electric current and stock which are trained with electric fences. If unsure of the best type of fence for your situation, speak to other people and find out what works for them and what doesn’t, have a look at other properties and think about your budget. Over the long term, it can be more profitable to invest in good quality fences from the start. ¢

Giving back to nature Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where

it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for boats. They called

it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world

wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and offgrid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.
