Mrs Wright received a Queen’s Service Medal for services to senior citizens and the community in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. She found out about her honour after returning home from a recent medical procedure. When the list was published in the local paper she took a copy to her son and told him to have a look to see if there was anyone he knew. He was pleasantly surprised to find her name there. “I would never have dreamt it. I didn’t know how to react.” Mrs Wright credits her husband and children for giving her the freedom to dedicate so much time to working with the elderly. “I started working at George Manning House looking after the 41 cottages,” she said. She next worked at Archer Memorial Home from 1990– 2004 as the head nurse with a large staff. “The residents worked hard to make our lives easier,” she said. “They need to be honoured and respected for that.” She described her time there as being about promoting justice and fairness for the residents. She told her staff to think of the main hallway at the facility as Colombo Street and each person’s room was to be

treated like their house. This helped remind the staff to be courteous to the residents. At a conference on Pastoral Care and Spirituality for the Elderly in Canberra, Wright felt a calling to go into faith based community nursing and she returned to Christchurch to start a blood pressure clinic at Avonhead Baptist Church. From there she moved on to founding a foot clinic which, in her words, ‘would help anyone who couldn’t reach their own toes’. The clinic offers nail clips, a foot spa and massage, and currently services 135 clients. Since the clinic opened, 15 more have been established in the South Island and each one is run by a registered nurse. “It’s wonderful to see older people leaving happy,” she said. She draws inspiration for her ministry from the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet in the Bible. “It’s about being humble. It also goes back to a  For almost 35 years West Melton’s Noreen Wright has been caring for the elderly tradition of parishioners being cared for by women in the community.” advocate and a promoter of elder abuse She said her work with the foot clinic will awareness. “Time is limited and you have continue as well as her role as a patient to make the most of it,” she said. 

West Melton Scouting celebrated its 50th birthday over Queen’s Birthday weekend with members past and present gathering to share stories and officially open a new camp fire area. Past and present scouting leaders, members and their families gathered at the West Melton reserve to enjoy the celebrations. “The event confirmed the strong and proud history of the West Melton Scout Group,” West Melton Scouting group leader Christine Coppard said. Memories were shared as photos, scrapbooks and newspaper articles were passed around. Ms Coppard said an impressive display of Scout blankets were on show and inspired current Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers to

collect badges. “It reminded former Scouts of Jamboree memories both in New Zealand and overseas,” she said. Also on display were two handmade canoes built in the 1970s. “The highlight of the celebration was opening the new campfire area in the reserve. “This was opened by the four original West Melton Scouting leaders, Graeme Oakley, Colin Watson, Gail Watson and Ray Quinton, with Keas Finn Card and Luca Pellegrino-Serra.” 

New medical centre to ease doctor waiting lists  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A new private medical practice set to open in Rolleston this month hopes to cater for the growing number of people unable to access general health care in the town. With 500 pre-enrolments, Rolleston Central Health (RCH) is aiming to relieve some of the backlog of patients who were unable to enrol in the Rolleston Medical Centre because it was full to capacity, according to the RCH administrator Deborah Devon. “Doctors in Rolleston have been fully booked for some time. We’ve had a lot of interest. People will have a lot more ready access to medical care,” Ms Devon said. Ms Devon said the new privately owned practice was initiated by Dr Phil Schroeder, who worked previously at the

Rolleston Medical Centre. She said it was hoped to be open to the public last week, but delays in outfitting the building have seen the practitioners open temporarily at Rolleston Dental Centre. “We hope to be ready in a couple of weeks,” Ms Devon said. The RCH medical centre will offer specialist care in physiotherapy, podiatry and osteopathy as well as an on-site pharmacy. “As we get bigger we will look to employ more doctors. It’s a big practice. It’s got the capacity to grow bigger,” Ms Devon said. 

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Too old to survey Dear editor, On the weekend I was contacted by an organisation who stated that they were conducting a survey on behalf of the Selwyn District Council. This survey was to cover a range of subjects but basically it was to find out how I found the Selwyn council to be conducting itself and as to if they were doing a good job and meeting the requirements of the ratepayers. However, I was totally disgusted to find that if I was over the age of 65 or in other words a pensioner then my opinions and thoughts were not wanted, I am considered to be too old to have an opinion, I am certainly not too old to pay rates I am just too old to have a say in how I found the council to be performing. If this is to be the method the council is going to adopt in its ‘fact finding’ surveys then they are not only

a complete waste of ratepayers money but an insult to all the rate paying pensioners in the district. I would like to hear how the mayor and CEO can justify such a survey which is not only a waste of my money but is obviously designed to get a slanted result which the council can use to justify what plan they may have. If I am too old to have an opinion then I must also be too old to pay rates. Selwyn has a very high percentage of older people living and working in the district, so to be treated like this is simply appalling. It would be very interesting to hear from all the elected members as to how they feel about this survey and of course from the CEO who would have had to sign off on it being done. Gary Doyle (74 and proud of it). Weedons

Council responds The council’s annual Residents Survey, undertaken by an independent agency, seeks the views of about 1,000 residents. The survey is designed to be representative of the population of Selwyn and has quotas on age, gender and ward. This survey methodology is commonly used in telephone surveys to ensure the results are statistically valid and representative of the group being sampled. To ensure the survey was representative of the adult population aged 18 and over we sought to obtain 15.5% of responses from those in the 65 plus age group. This is the same

percentage of this age group as in the 2013 census of Selwyn’s population (excluding children under 18). We are sorry that the writer felt excluded from the survey. Our agent’s advise that the exclusion was as a result of the survey already having a full quota of people in the 65 plus age group. We appreciate the participation of Selwyn residents in this survey, even in cases where the person phoned was not in the demographic group being sought. David Ward SDC Chief Executive

Civil defence staff put to the test  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn District Council civil defence staff have been put through their paces in a recent training exercise based on a significant rainfall event which involved responding to towns being cut off.

 Selwyn District Council civil defence staff ‘respond’ to calls for help during a training exercise

Exercise Pandora was based on major rainfall affecting most of the Selwyn district. Twenty council staff and several community response teams practised activating the council’s Emergency Operations Centre to respond to the impact of rural communities being cut off by slips, towns requiring evacuation, power outages, flooding and water supply problems. Selwyn civil defence and emergency operations controller Douglas Marshall said the exercise gave council staff the opportunity to activate the EOC in Rolleston to practise how response activities to a significant weather event could be co-ordinated. “By practising how to respond to such an event, we can ensure the people involved have a chance to familiarise themselves with the EOC environment and think through the different aspects of emergency response so they are better prepared to cope with a real emergency.” The exercise is the latest in a series of emergency response exercises council has participated in. “Last year we took part in an exercise where we were required to respond to

a large earthquake affecting the West Coast,” Mr Marshall said. “Selwyn covers a very large area and there are a number of emergencies that may need to be responded to so it’s good for staff to be prepared for a variety of scenarios through training.” Meanwhile, the Canterbury Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group is urging Selwyn residents to be prepared for anything winter may throw at them. CDEM’s community resilience coordinator Jessica Petersen said Selwyn residents have recent experience of flooding, wind storms and power outages and may have already made use of their emergency kits, so now is the ideal time to restock and review emergency plans. “We know the people in this region have had their fair share of weatherrelated events in the last few months but unfortunately that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to come. “Everyone still needs to have the necessities in place to be able to be selfsufficient for three days or more in the event of road closures and power cuts. “This includes having stocks of food, water, warm clothing, fuel, alternative cooking and other emergency supplies on hand.” 

Springston nursery takes supreme award  by Kelly M Phillips

K & L Nurseries has received the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority supreme award for their investment in an eco-friendly boiler. The business is a family affair with owners Paul and Lyn Loader working alongside their daughter Michelle and her husband Ian Kempthorne. The nursery produces both roses and gerberas and supplies 70% of the latter throughout the South Island. Mr Loader said the two factors leading up to his investment in the new Austrian-made boiler were a hike in the coal tax and the need to update the business’ old coalburning model. A prize winner at the original beard growing competition held in 1971, Mr Watson discovered his preference for facial hair after winning the most colourful beard award. Mr Watson told The Record that he was feeling the cold now that he had lost his facial insulation. His wife Gail Watson said his beard was removed with a beard trimmer, and that he wasn’t too keen on his new clean shaven look. “He didn’t have a beard when we got married. Mt Hutt opening delayed West Melton heroines  by Kent Caddick

 by Kelly M Phillips

The opening of the Mt Hutt ski area has been delayed.

Joyce Davey has a lot of admiration for the pioneering women of West Melton.

 A skier enjoys a perfect day at Mt Hutt last winter

The ski field was scheduled to open on the weekend but a decision to delay the opening was made late last week due to warm temperatures and a poor weather forecast. Ski area manager James McKenzie said it was hugely disappointing to make the call not to open when all systems, lifts and staff were ready to go, but said it was a good decision to make. “After encouraging early snowfalls in April and May and an unprecedented 110 hours of continuous snowmaking we’ve got a viable snow base from the top of the quad chair down to the base area,” he said.

“Our snowmakers have capitalised on light winds and very low humidity to create some really massive mounds of snow on our main trails, but we don’t want to groom these until the warm weather and rain has passed through. “We’re looking forward to having guests come up here and enjoy opening day so we’re putting everything on hold until the weather improves.” Mr McKenzie said everything was poised and ready to go on the mountain. “The lifts are all ready including our new-look Triple Chair which has been tested, certified and signed off.” 

“Sometimes the women are forgotten,” she said. Mrs Davey, who lives in Rolleston, has made it her personal mission to make sure the West Melton women aren’t forgotten as the Selwyn township gears up to celebrate its 150th anniversary over Labour weekend. The former Selwyn Central Community Board member is compiling a book which will cover women’s stories from West Melton’s founding days to modern times. “They really had to make do with what was around,” she said of the region’s pioneering women. She cites isolation, shingle roads, and locating a reliable water source as some of the early challenges. “They had large families and had to help with the farming and keep up the washing with no modern conveniences. In those days, coal stoves were used for cooking and meal preparation could take up the better part of the day.” She said nowadays people can pick up and move house if things don’t work out but the first women settlers were tenacious and determined to stick it out on their homesteads. With regard to a more modern woman, Mrs Davey mentions Dorothy Oakley as her inspiration.

 Joyce Davey is putting together a book on the women of West Melton

“She did so much for the community. She received so many awards including the Queen’s Service Medal. She needs to be recognised.” She said there had been an interest from the locals in her project and she has had help compiling stories and collecting photographs. Even so, she said the project was a huge undertaking and would probably not be finished in time for West Melton’s 150th celebration. Instead, she will be taking a table at the community hall during the anniversary festivities to display some of the stories and photographs she has acquired. 

Pothole problems plague council  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The state of Selwyn roads are under investigation by council following continued pothole problems according to Selwyn District Council CEO David Ward. Questions about the quality of work and the time taken to respond to requests to fix potholes will be put to roading maintenance contractor HEB Construction Ltd by council at a meeting this week. “Potholes are the number one issue for roading at the moment. Clearly what is happening is not acceptable. The community deserves a lot better,” Mr Ward said. Mr Ward said he was happy with the system of reporting and recording the location of potholes in the district, but was concerned

with the quality of maintenance work undertaken. “Staff are currently in discussion with our contractors both in respect to response time to undertake pothole maintenance and, more importantly, the quality of work that is being undertaken,” Mr Ward said. “We have noted a number of instances where maintenance works have failed prematurely and from a council perspective this is not an acceptable outcome. Mr Ward acknowledged the contractors were working on roads

where there was a significant increase in the number and weight of vehicles. SDC Asset Manager Murray Washington said the total budget for sealed pavement maintenance was $960,000 per annum with no specific allocation to pothole repairs. He said despite an increase in vehicle numbers and weight there had been no significant increase for roading maintenance. “We would like more funding for roading maintenance overall, and that is exacerbated by the significant increase in overall traffic numbers and in particular heavy vehicle growth,” Mr Washington said. “We are in constant communication with NZTA re overall funding requirements. This will be covered by our submission to the 2015–18 National Land Transport Programme.” 

Railway rejuvenation on track Plans to give Rolleston’s railway station a makeover are underway with the intention of transforming the unused station into a welcoming venue for visitors. Selwyn Central Community Board chair Diane Chesmar said around 30 people attended a conversation café to share ideas on how the station could be transformed into a place Rolleston residents could be proud of. “People were keen to see the railway station preserved and we had some really good suggestions from the public about how  A 1909 photo of the Rolleston Railway Station by J A T Terry shows what the original station and yards looked like over the railway station could 100 years ago be improved. “These included developing some said the board’s first job will be to form of a memorial or mural at the create gardens to make the station station as part of the World War One attractive again. centennial commemorations to mark its The first station at Rolleston was role as a departure point for local troops constructed in 1866, and 2016 will serving in World War I. mark the 150th anniversary of a station “Another idea was to use the at the site. Welcome to Selwyn  by Mayor Kelvin Coe

This month a number of new farming families will move to Selwyn. Gypsy Day fell on June 1, and this is traditionally a day when cows are moved from one farm to another as part of the change of dairy seasons.

Sharemilkers and dairy farms often change hands along with the cows which is why we can expect to see some new faces in our community during June.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to these new residents. Selwyn has a proud rural history and a diverse mix of agricultural activities. Our district currently has the strongest economy of any area in New Zealand, and the dairy and agricultural sector is a big contributor to Selwyn’s prosperity. Selwyn has much to offer new residents. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy the district’s spectacular scenery, a safe environment with a high quality education system, and a friendly and welcoming community. Selwyn has in place infrastructure which will support continuing levels of economic activity in our district. Izone provides a range of services to urban and rural businesses, and the recent purchase of land by the Ports of Lyttleton and Tauranga will make it easier for businesses to export and import goods here. A taste of Italy in New Zealand  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

As the saying goes, good things take time and so did the Festa family’s journey to make a new life in Selwyn. Emilio Festa and his wife Adriana knew they would have to leave Italy if they were to pursue their dream of owning some land and building a small cheese making factory. A combination of high land prices and bureaucracy around starting a business meant it would be nearly impossible to do this in Italy.

“I knew one day I would have to leave my country, my job, my parents, my friends. I always had the idea that I would go somewhere and make cheese,” Emilio said. In 2003 when their second daughter got a job as an au pair with an Italian family in Selwyn, Emilio and Adriana

decided to visit and were immediately enamoured with New Zealand. “I thought ‘this is my place’. I decided that I would do everything possible to move here,” Emilio said. Emilio’s love of cheese making began at an early age. As a boy he delighted in seeing people making cheese in the villages around where he lived. “Always as a child I’d see people making stracchino (a soft creamy Italian

cheese made of cow’s milk). I was always curious,” he said. Fifteen months after visiting New Zealand they made their first steps to a new life. Unsure of whether they would get residency or not, Emilio decided to move to New Zealand first, while Adriana stayed in Italy, keeping her job and the family home in case things didn’t work out. The couple would live apart for the next two years.

LIFESTYLE “Now life would begin here in New Zealand. It took a while to realise the dream. There were always high mountains to climb,” Emilio said. Emilio found work at the Puhoi cheese making factory in the North Island. Unfortunately cheese making was not a recognised skill which would allow Emilio to gain New Zealand residency so he was forced to change jobs. He got a job near Christchurch as an agricultural technician. Adriana visited sometimes in the holidays. The couple’s son Enrico was the next to move over, attending Darfield High School. Eldest daughter Francesca followed soon after and attended teacher’s college in Christchurch. Two years after Emilio’s move to New Zealand the family’s residency came through and Adriana moved to New Zealand. They bought an 80 hectare property near Charing Cross where Emilio now grows barley. In 2010 Adriana began making and selling Italian food at markets and Emilio started making cheese from home. Emilio’s cheese met with immediate success and he won the New Zealand Best Hobbyist Cheese Maker Award 2010. The following year he repeated his win and also won an award for his mozzarella. By 2012 he was promoted to the professional cheese making category for the New Zealand awards, competing against the big guns of the country’s cheese makers. That year he won a silver medal for his mozzarella and a bronze for his stracchino. Last year Emilio took his dream to the next level and built a small cheese making factory on the farm. He gave up outside employment and now spends most of his working time making

cheese. His day starts at 4am and he works throughout the day attending to the cheese. He never takes a day off and the couple do not take holidays as the cheese requires his constant attention. “Making cheese is like raising children. They are all different and unique. Like a baby, at first it needs more attention. I always do my best. I spend a lot of time to get the right taste and texture,” Emilio said. Last year the hard work paid off and Emilio was awarded the New Zealand Champion of Cheese Award 2014. Emilio makes over 20 different kinds of cheese and the family sell the cheese at farmers’ markets

in Ohoka, Lincoln, Riccarton Park, Opawa, Lyttleton and Oxford as well as a couple of shops and restaurants in Christchurch. Emilio says a good cheese maker requires knowledge, experience, tradition, curiosity, passion and a little bit of craziness.

“When you mix all these things together and add enough courage then you are ready to begin the venture. Every day I learn something new. You must never believe that you already know it all.” Emilio’s passion for cheese making is evident in the time and commitment he puts into perfecting his craft. “Cheese is alive. It is always changing until the end when it is eaten. Every cheese will be different. Each has their own story. This is the beauty of this job.” There have been sacrifices along the way and all dreams come with a cost. The couple’s third child Alessandro decided after 10 months in New Zealand that she did not want to live here and has returned to Italy. This has been difficult for the couple. Still Emilio looks to the future. “I always dreamt of having a small farm. Now I want to improve what I am doing. I hope one day to open a small shop.” 

All the buzz on bees  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Whether you go all out and get bee hives on your block, or encourage other people’s bees to come and pollinate your plants, creating a healthy buzz on your lifestyle property is important for all farmers. Some people are afraid of the idea of attracting bees to their property, but retired veterinarian Dr Marjorie Orr says New Zealand bees are not usually aggressive unless provoked. “There is no need to fear bees if they are

managed by a registered beekeeper and their hives are undisturbed. “They will leave you alone if you leave them alone. There are no aggressive Africanised honeybees in New Zealand,” Dr Orr said. If you would like to have bee hives on your property Dr Orr recommends hiring hives from a professional beekeeper. “The most hassle-free way of acquiring a healthy bee presence is to ask a registered local bee-keeper if he or she would like to keep a few hives on your farm. All you need to provide is a quiet sheltered sunny corner and plenty of flowering plants.” Some beekeepers will charge you to have their hives on your property, and in return will share with you a portion of the honey they collect. If having bee hives on your property doesn’t interest you, the next best thing is to attract the presence of nearby bees. “To encourage feral bees and bees from neighbouring hives, plant or encourage bee-friendly trees and shrubs on waterway margins, in windbreaks, along field edges and roadsides and in native scrub and bush,” Dr Orr said.

 One way to get more bees is to have a registered local beekeeper put beehives on your lifestyle block

Planting wisely will not only make your property more bee friendly, but will bring other benefits as well. “Fortunately a number of shelter and erosion control plants have abundant flowers to feed bees so selecting multipurpose plants is smart farming,” she said.

Examples of bee friendly native plants are cabbage trees, hebe, manuka, matagouri, New Zealand flax, Southern rata and weeping kowhai. Some non-native bee attracting plants are apple and pear trees, lavender, rosemary, blue gum trees and weeping willows. 

GARDENING

How to control garden pests without insecticides  Article supplied by Consumer NZ

You can limit pest damage by making sure your garden is a healthy balanced system. If pests do get out of hand there are ways of keeping their populations down which don’t rely on insecticides. These methods have the added advantage of protecting the wide range of insects and other animals which your garden needs. Here are some tips to keep the pests at bay without resorting to insecticides. Healthy soil The soil must be fertile, with soil animals allowed to play their vital role. Feed the soil by returning organic matter to it as compost or mulch. Fallen leaves, grass clippings and rotted manure can all be used as mulches. Soil kept healthy this way will not need commercial fertilisers to boost its fertility. Healthy plants A healthy plant can overcome the effects of diseases or pests better than a weak one. If you have a plant with a pest problem, try to work out why it is so vulnerable. Does it need more or less water? Does it need more or less nitrogen or other nutrients? Does it need more sun? Grow plants that do well in your local soil and climate. Young, tender seedlings are more vulnerable to pest damage than older, more established plants, so make sure the soil is good enough to give the plants or seeds a rapid start in life. Water frequently to encourage steady growth. Discourage pests Keep weeds down — a dense cover keeps the soil surface damp which encourages slugs. Aphids can survive the winter on weeds then move on to your new plants in spring. Destroy any heavily infested plants before pests spread to others. The affected leaves or the whole plant should be burnt or buried deeply. Rotate crops You can stop pests building up in the soil by growing each type of vegetable in a different patch each year. A regular

cycle of rotation should cover three to five years. Peas and beans make nitrogen available in the soil, so they should be planted the season before crops which need lots of nitrogen — such as cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli (brassicas). Follow with a root crop such as carrots or onions. Grow a mixture of plants A mixture of plants may encourage a greater variety of insects, so there is less chance of one species doing better than others and becoming a pest. It also attracts insects and birds which feed on those you want to control. Growing ‘companion’ plants together in the same area can also help control pests. They can repel insects you don’t want (for example, scented marigolds repel whitefly), or attract pests away from plants you don’t want damaged (nasturtiums attract aphids away from other plants). Natural enemies of some pests are attracted by the flowers of

carrot, parsnip, parsley and dill plants, for example, parasitic wasps which feed on leafroller caterpillars and tomato fruitworms. Some varieties of vegetables ADVERTORIAL

Winter planting notes Winter is the right time to get many plants in the ground to make the most of the easy digging and moist soils. Smaller plants, or those susceptible to winter conditions, should be held till spring but more robust species are good to go now. Winter dormant species to plant now are deciduous trees such as those used for shelter, fruit trees, specimens, and forestry or shelter conifers. Many of the above species are only supplied by the nurseries as open-ground (or bare-root) trees during winter so if you haven’t got

them in by the end of August you may have to wait for another year. Any varieties that don’t suit a winter plant are grown in containers to give you a much wider planting window. A number of the fruit, specimen and conifer trees are also available yearround in containers. Check out our website — www. southernwoods.co.nz or phone 0800 800 352.

BUSINESS

Establishing an import business out of China  by Geoff Hill

Sourcing products from another country in which the language and culture is completely different from New Zealand is a recipe for substantial communication difficulties which can hugely jeopardise the viability of a business. Added to this are difficulties in ensuring adequate product quality control which may ultimately affect the saleability of the product. These are serious matters that must be considered before establishing an

importation business. There are five tips I would offer to establish a successful importation business ex China: 1. Undertake thorough research on the supplying company and the product prior to making a purchasing decision.

2. Ensure that communication is good between both parties and preferably travel to China to visit the supplier to meet the key personnel, view the manufacture of the product(s) and discuss specific requirements. 3. Confirm payment arrangements (ie typically 30% on placement of the order, 70% on the issue of the shipping documents) and warranty conditions prior to placing the order. 4. Employ a New Zealand based shipping agent to arrange shipping and marine insurance.

5. Thoroughly check the condition of the product upon arrival in New Zealand for damage, malfunction or design faults which may affect saleability and immediately inform the supplier of any shortfalls discovered and seek remedial action. Establishing an import business is a lot more complex than just picking up the phone, placing your order and waiting for the goods to arrive so make sure you do your ‘homework’ thoroughly before you start. 
