The algae (benthic cyanobacteria) is potentially fatal to animals, particularly dogs, and the CDHB has issued a health warning for the area. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. “Phormidium mats have been found in the river and some of these mats are detaching and accumulating at the sides of the river. “Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips. “No-one should drink the water from the river at any time, even after boiling the water from the river; it does not remove the toxin; therefore it should not be consumed.” Dr Humphrey said if pets show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats they should be taken to a vet immediately.

He said that Selwyn District Council is following agreed procedures to ensure their reticulated drinking water supplies are safe, while Environment Canterbury is monitoring the site. “People and animals should remain out of the waterways until the warnings have been lifted,” Dr Humphrey said. ¢

Middle Rock Farm near Windwhistle will host this year’s Hororata Parish fun run and cycle fundraiser and participants will be able to take in some breathtaking views of the Selwyn countryside.

p Marty Gameson (left) with Abigail and Cindy Driscoll on the track at Middle Rock

The annual event raises funds for the Hororata Parish for its community activities and will be held on Sunday, March 5. The day provides the opportunity for people to access private farm tracks for running, walking and biking with a range of distances, from 6km to 20km. Hororata Parish Vicar Jenni Carter says the day offers something for all ages and fitness levels. “This day gives people the opportunity to get off the beaten track with a choice of distance and discipline,” she said. “Cyclists, runners and walkers all share the track, which allows families to go together, with kids biking and parents walking or running if they choose. “We believe the scenery is a very unique aspect of this day, many recreational events are in forest or bush and don’t offer the chance to be in the vast wide open country that Middle Rock offers.” Middle Rock Farm is in the Lake Coleridge basin, 15 minutes from Windwhistle. The 4WD shingle tracks wind their way through the farm and provide breathtaking views overlooking the Rakaia River and into the heart of the Southern Alps. “Our event is also unique in there is no set start time, this allows for a

stress-free start to the day, and with nice wide tracks there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy being in this wonderful country,” Jenni said. “The tracks are a series of loops, the further you travel the more advanced the tracks are. A number of intersections allow you to loop back to the start, making it a great day out for groups or families with mixed abilities. “For those who like to challenge themselves, the 20km track has some great terrain, which will provide some excitement mixed with beautiful scenery. The short tracks still give great views but are a little easier with only a few climbs and no difficult terrain to navigate.” For more information on the day go to hororataparish.co.nz or facebook.com/ hororataparish.co.nz. ¢

Investment in infrastructure takes many forms u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Infrastructure supports much of our daily lives, including the roads we drive on, the schools our children learn in and our electricity and water networks, and is a key driver of the economy and public services. Another important thing to remember is that when the government invests in infrastructure this creates jobs and offers training opportunities. Since 2008 the government has committed billions of dollars to infrastructure. Investment in modern infrastructure is a priority and government capital spending over the next five years is forecast to total $32 billion with major investments in transport, schools, hospitals, defence and housing. Here in Selwyn we have seen this government investment in the form of new schools for Rolleston and new classrooms for other schools in the region. In the area of transport infrastructure we currently have the Southern Motorway extension underway, which is going to make a big difference to transport in and around

our region. In the communications sphere, it’s fantastic to see that more areas of Selwyn will receive the benefit of ultra-fast broadband in the coming years, under the extension to the Ultra-Fast Broadband programme, which was announced at the end of January. West Melton is one of eight new areas of the Selwyn electorate to be included under UFB2. The other areas from Selwyn on the list are Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln fringe/Springston, Rakaia, Southbridge, Akaroa and Diamond Harbour. Our investment in infrastructure continues to build a strong platform for growth. A more competitive and productive economy is the only way we will create jobs, boost incomes and provide high-quality public services for everyone.

I don’t think I will get a lot of time for sightseeing. “However, those who have been before said it was an extremely rewarding experience.” The visit is being partially funded by the Ministry of Health in the Cook Islands, and Ms Sincock could be seeing as many as 60 patients a day. “People in New Zealand have really good access to hearing services but in the Cook Islands these services aren’t readily available. “So when there are, people are lining up from 7am in the morning to come and see you. And the ages are right across the board, from the very young to the elderly. Lifestyle Blocks

Six decades and going strong u by Andy Bryenton

The Toyota Land Cruiser is an icon of off-road driving — the archetype of the SUV and a machine found in every environment on earth, from burning deserts to thick jungles to arctic tundra. Right now, Toyota are celebrating 60 years since the first Land Cruisers — the venerable 1957 FJ series — came to Australasia. Australia was first to see the FJ, that jeep-like 4x4 with its canvas top and unashamedly military appearance. A handful worked on the Snowy Mountain hydro electric scheme, but soon the floodgates would open as people caught on to the reliability and grit of the Japanese off-roader. With leaf springs and a six-cylinder motor coupled to a four-speed manual, this machine was a long way from the Land Cruiser of today, but it proved its worth in toughness. The market share of competitor off-road

machines went into freefall as people in Australia and New Zealand cottoned on. The DNA of the Land Cruiser split during the 1980s with the introduction of the 70 Series alongside more luxurious seven-seater family adventure models. Throughout this time, however, Toyota’s big off-roader continued to be seen all over the world, often in the news as a rescue vehicle, in wildlife shows carrying camera crews to the wilderness, or even deployed during wartime. Today, 60 years on from those first Land Cruisers coming to the Antipodes, the top of the range in Toyota’s SUV stable is a sleek and luxurious machine, filled with safety and entertainment features and able to transport the whole family anywhere in comfort. But under the sculpted facade there’s still a true terrain-conquering beast — part of a heritage that has literally taken on the world and won.

When push comes to shove u by Andy Bryenton

david stevenson contracting

The push mower may be an icon of the Kiwi garden, but there are limits to what one can achieve with manual power alone. Those leaving the city — with its postage stamp quarter-acre lawns — and adopting the lifestyle-block way of life, will soon find that even the most trusty traditional lawnmower is not quite up to the task. When you have a large area to handle, and especially if your property contains uneven terrain or features such as garden beds, chicken coops or wellestablished trees, you need a machine which combines the precision of a men’s electric razor with the hard-working rural power of a combine harvester. Oddly enough, that’s just the combo which comes to mind when you first see Husqvarna’s R 316T rider mower. Articulated in the middle like a civil works digger and packing a tri-bladed, fore-mounted cutting deck, the R 316T does not look at all like your usual lawn tractor. That’s because the Scandinavian engineers behind some of the world’s best chainsaws and outdoor power tools have re-thought the concept. By putting the engine at the back they’ve added stability, and by putting the cutting deck out front where it’s easy to see, they have made the Rider into a precision machine. It’s like driving an open-wheel race car — with the wheel exposed you can hit the apex of each corner. With the cutting deck taken forward and out from under the control seat, you can place

the triple blades with the same finesse as wielding a razor. Husqvarna sourced a powerful twincylinder engine from motorcycle makers Kawasaki to give the R 316T some real oomph, and coupled it to a four-wheeldrive system to handle uneven terrain and slippery lawns. The articulated steering of the Rider series gives this machine a super tight turning circle, and to add comfort it’s power assisted. In fact, clever little innovations abound,

including the ability to flip the entire cutting deck up out of the front like a cartridge and lock it into a vertical position for a water blast washdown. Kiwi icons for Selwyn Sounds Two blokes from Lincoln, one a local pub owner and the other an event and business manager, one day found themselves discussing live events in the town and the wider Selwyn district.

p Kiwi rockers Mi-Sex will headline the inaugural Selwyn Sounds concert

Determining there were few large scale events that brought both the community together and added significant economic benefits to the local community, they identified an opportunity to create an event for Selwyn. Over a series of conversations, Selwyn Sounds was born, with David Parlane and Craig Bradford forming Three Coins Gentlemen Events company. Combined, the pair have more than 60 years of business experience in hospitality, event management, media, marketing and logistics. “The festival will be based on a chilled and relaxed day of music, food, family and community,” the pair said. Featuring some of New Zealand’s all-time favourite bands, the inaugural Selwyn Sounds event will be held at the Lincoln Domain starting at 11.30am this Saturday and coincides with the culmination of Lincoln University’s orientation week. Headlining the day will be Mi-Sex’s only Christchurch show as well as the reformed Dragon performing again in New Zealand.

Also gracing the stage will be Kiwi pop icon Jordan Luck and his new band, acclaimed songstresses Sharon O’Neill, Annie Crummer, Margaret Urlich and Debbie Harwood, and multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Kerrison. “We have assembled an outstanding line-up for our first ever event of this size in Lincoln,” David Parlane said.

“We all remember what we were doing when these artists first came into the music scene in New Zealand, and to have them perform all these years later with new material as well as old is an honour for the town. “The line-up is for everyone and we look forward to an incredible first year event.” Mr Parlane said they are setting their sights on

Strong on toughness u by Andy Bryenton

There are two ways to build a reliable, hard-working utility truck. The first is to come up from the roots of the ute concept — adapting the classic layout of a big sedan and adding a flat deck. The other way is to start at the other end — with an honest to goodness truck. Isuzu is no stranger to building trucks and the big diesel engines that power them. Vast swathes of South East Asia have been built by Isuzu’s heavy haulers, many of which have faced conditions that would crumble lesser machines. That’s why when the Isuzu name appeared on a ute called the D-Max in the not so distant past, it was well worth a look. Those familiar with the tough Bighorn and MU SUVs certainly took note, and a quick pop of the bonnet justified their curiosity. Experience building those big diesel mills has been distilled down into the 4JJ1 turbo diesel — three litres of hightorque combustion armed with modern turbo technology for even more grunt. Just looking at the components of the D-Max’s engine gives one pause; they are visibly bigger and more solidly built than those from other utes in the market. That’s something you feel on the road, with 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity

p A favourite for real outdoors action — hunters, farmers, tradies and off-road drivers appreciate the toughness of D-Max

at your disposal. But it’s also something that will pay dividends during the life of the vehicle. Using truck components means that this is a serious workhorse. Big roller bearings and a stainless timing chain are just a couple of examples. That’s not so say that the D-Max isn’t up for its fair share of adventure, either. There’s a reason this ute is a favourite of hunters, teamed up with the

founder of outdoor clothing label Swazi. And there’s no bare-bones approach to comfort here, either. A well-appointed cabin filled with all the modern gadgets and safety features comes as standard. It’s proof that the world’s largest diesel manufacturer can blend toughness and reliability with comfort and sharp looks, creating a modern masterpiece. ¢

A smooth transition to better farming u by Andy Bryenton

When tractor manufacturer Deutz Fahr invited leading farm machinery experts to their Dresden facility last July for a new tractor launch, the first thing which caught their attention was the styling of the new 6 Series. Soon enough though, it was what hides under the aggressively styled bonnet which stole the show. That’s because while the 6 Series Deutz Fahr looks like it means business, with its supercar-inspired creases and angles, it’s the all-new powerplant and transmission at the heart of the beast which fulfil that promise. In fact, finding a smoother, more versatile transmission system and engine pairing in a tractor of this size may just prove an impossible task. The 6 Series sits in that comfortable niche below the biggest tractors in the field and above the small ‘secondary’ machine that fulfils a farm’s more menial tasks. With every model in the range bracketed between 145 and 200 horsepower, this is a tractor for the most demanding general applications, and the new 6-litre turbo-diesel engine under that sloping bonnet delivers better economy as well as ample power. Built to meet the fourth and ultimate tier of tough Euro emissions standards, that means less fuel and AdBlue go in

1 DAY 3 DAY 9 DAY WINTER SEASON LOCAL SENIOR FAMILY VISITOR

to extract the maximum results in the field. Even when traversing on-road, the 6 Series can maintain an eco-friendly 50km/h at just on 1,447 revs. There’s clever engineering in the new axle system too, for added stability and ride comfort, even with a big implement attached. But the star of the new 6 Series lineup is the link between that axle system (and those huge, terrain-mastering tyres) and the engine. The new RC Shift transmission builds on the success of previous Deutz Fahr transmission technology to create a new level of smooth operation. Fully automatic on demand, this unit surpasses the crude term ‘gearbox’, offering five operational ranges with six powershifts in each. With no less than seventeen gears in the main working speed range and a battery of reverse options to boot, fine tuning power delivery has never been easier or more precise.

p Green power — the mid-sized 6 Series gains transmission technology usually associated with much larger machines

The six-speed dual-clutch in your road car will seem positively prehistoric by comparison! Add in better comfort, visibility and an easy to maintain cooling

system and this is one green machine that’s set to make an impact in New Zealand, similar to the one it made in Dresden. ¢
