Selwyn signs sister city agreement in Indonesia A long-standing co-operation between coffee growers in North Toraja Regency in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and a group of Canterbury farmers including many from Selwyn, has been recognised with the signing of a Sister District Agreement between the two districts. Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe was in North Toraja on a personal visit recently to sign the Sister District Agreement and visit a number of coffee growing sites. “This agreement cements the exceptional relationship our farming community already has with the North Toraja farmers, and will help to foster cultural ties between the two districts,” Mayor Coe said. New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, David Taylor, was also delighted to see the co-operation between the two districts recognised in the Sister District Agreement. “This is the first agreement of its kind between a New Zealand district and an Indonesian one,” Ambassador Taylor said. “I am sure that it will prove very successful in bringing a Kiwi flavour to a remote and vibrant corner of Indonesia.” This agreement formalises a relationship which has been developing for over 12 years between a dedicated group of mainly Canterbury farmers, chaired by Graham Robertson, and a group of coffee growers in the North Toraja Regency. The farmers have been providing support and advice to the North Torajan coffee growers on how best to produce, market and sell their coffee.

I am always impressed when I go into schools around Selwyn by the enthusiasm and energy of our young people. Their talent and thirst for knowledge gives me great hope for the future of our communities and our country. It is therefore heartening to see provisional results from 2013 which show that more students are leaving school with an NCEA Level 2 qualification. Last year nearly 77 per cent of school leavers achieved at least NCEA Level 2. This is a significant increase from 66.5 per cent in 2008. Maori and Pasifika students have had the biggest increase in achievement. In 2013, 58.6 per cent of Maori students left school with at least NCEA Level 2, up from 44.4 per cent in 2008. And 71.8 per cent of Pasifika students left school with at least NCEA Level 2, up from 55.3 per cent in 2008. These are outstanding results and reflect the hard work being done in our schools to raise student achievement. And it is not just academically that things are looking rosy for our young people. The rate of 15 to 24-year-

olds not in employment, education or training is at its lowest since December 2008. Illegal street racing offences, a problem we have had at particular times and locations here in Selwyn, are down by nearly 30% in Canterbury, dropping from 371 in 2009 to 263 in 2013. During the same period, road deaths for 15 to 24-year-olds in New Zealand have fallen from 105 to 66. Overall, youth crime has dropped 18 per cent since June 2011. All of these figures demonstrate that our young people are increasingly engaged in productive activities and are shunning anti-social and criminal behaviour, and that is something to be proud of.

Sticks and stones bring gold

First time exhibitors Aaron and Vicky Bartlett of Rolleston have taken away a gold medal in the exhibition garden section of the Ellerslie International Garden Show held in Christchurch last week. The couple who run their own landscaping and design business The Outdoor Space on their lifestyle property near Rolleston, were one of only two exhibition gardens to get gold. Mr Bartlett said he was ‘stoked’ to get the award. “I don’t really believe it at the moment. We weren’t expecting to get gold,” Mr Bartlett said. The Bartletts chose to exhibit at the garden show after helping a friend last year. “We
thought, we could do that. We’re just a small business and we decided to give it a go.” They were given a six-metre by sixmetre space to create their design which Vicky titled ‘Sticks and stones to Rest my Bones’. Their design was simple, and featured an outdoor stone fireplace and a wooden pergola. “We wanted to build something anyone could have in their own gardens,” Mr Bartlett said.

The local support was overwhelming,” Ms Mclenaghan said. Many local organisations were involved in the day, proving free activities and refreshments for the public. “The Lincoln Districts Community Care, and

App for missing Apples

A recent experience with my niece losing her iPhone somewhere in the North West of Christchurch prompted me to think about the popular Apple app called Find My iPhone. The experience goes like this: I’m working at my computer when I receive a frantic call for help via Facebook messages from my niece titled iPhone emergency. She had left her iPhone somewhere on her travels that morning. Did I have the Find your iPhone app on my phone? Could I locate her missing phone and let her know where it is? Feeling useful and tech savvy I cranked up the app and when prompted entered her Apple ID and password which she supplied. Having done that I was met with the unwelcome news that her iPhone had not been activated for this app and so the app was unable to locate the lost phone. This was a very anticlimactic outcome. My niece did in fact find her iPhone through more conventional means of searching and eliminating all the places she had been to that morning. Believe it or not the missing phone was found where it had been mislaid, still sitting between two trays of sushi in the food court of a mall, chilled but unharmed. The lesson learnt that morning, besides the fact that cell phones don’t like sushi, is that to enjoy the benefits of this wonderful technology, you must first enable the technology in your settings before the device actually becomes lost. A seemingly obvious suggestion perhaps, but not obvious enough for some. Apple’s Find my iPhone app can help users find a variety of devices including iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs. Once you’ve downloaded the app for the first time you need to sign in using the Apple ID and password you use for iCloud. The catch that caught my niece out is you then must enable the app in the

Sustainability guidelines launched A set of United Nations’ developed measures of sustainability for the agricultural and horticultural sectors has been launched. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) launched the set of guidelines to assess the sustainability of food and fibre production.

New Zealand agricultural and horticultural products and processing facilities tested against a pilot version of the measures of sustainability have come out extremely well according to researchers contributing to the development of the indicators. The New Zealand research team, led by Jon Manhire of the AgriBusiness Group in Christchurch, evaluated the SAFA prototype in 2013 by testing it on four different New Zealand enterprises that participate in the New Zealand Sustainability Dashboard research project. The performance of New Zealand vineyards, wineries, organic dairy farms and Ahika kai (indigenous food sold through a Ngai Tahu website), was compared with results from 30 other groups from around the world. The SAFA indicators were finetuned at a meeting in Rome last

March, and the revised guidelines just released have incorporated some of the modifications suggested by the New Zealand Sustainability Dashboard team. Jon Manhire was contracted by the FAO to assist with editing of these guidelines. “It is great to see the FAO showing international leadership on the issue of benchmarking sustainable food production. The meeting brought together a lot of groups from all production types with the goal of finding common ground in terms of sustainability assessment,” Mr Manhire said. New Zealand was the only country at the meeting to be represented by indigenous food producers. Dr John Reid assessed an indigenous food production and marketing pilot scheme established by Ngai Tahu and was able to suggest improvements so that the SAFA model better suited small scale family enterprises. Screenworks have moved into their purpose built workshop from their leased premises on Miners Road. Screenworks was established in 1993 by directors Brett Swain and Alan King, operating mobile screening and crushing plants in Canterbury, and throughout the South Island. Screens and Crushers can be seen working in riverbeds, subdivisions and quarries. “We have experienced rapid growth like others involved in the rebuild of Christchurch. We now employ 24 staff, many of whom are locals, working in various locations,” Mr Swain said.
Mr King added that the planning and building of the workshop had been a long but worthwhile process. “But now that we are up and running it has made our operation much easier. There has been lots of interest from the local community. We have even had the local rest home come to visit, and a French family wanted to stop in and have their lunch in our grounds,” Mr King said. In addition to the screening and crushing plants, Screenworks operate their own quarry with a full range of products for sale. Contractors or farmers can come in and pick up product or Screenworks can deliver.

Rural sector makes hefty contribution They may not be turning the same kind of dollar as their dairy farming counterparts right now, but when it comes to contributing to Christchurch city’s economy, sheep and beef farmers are leading the way. That’s according to recent research by Lincoln University’s Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit (AERU) which was commissioned by Aqualinc Research to examine expenditure flows into Christchurch from local farms and their households. The research, which focussed on farms from the Selwyn and Waimakariri districts, also included an assessment of the expenditure in Christchurch from rural businesses as a result of serving those farms and their households, as well as an assessment of employment

generated on account of these expenditure flows. The research found that sheep and beef farmers had the highest level of direct expenditure into the city — spending more than $80 million per annum. This was followed by mixed cropping farmers, who spent more than $76 million. Dairy farmers spent $68 million. All up, an average of 26 per cent of direct farm and household expenditure was spent in Christchurch — equating to $82,313 per farm, or $306 million in total. When factoring in an additional $511 million of expenditure from rural businesses, the total contribution to Christchurch city rises to $817 million. From a range of individual categories, the greatest level of direct farm expenditure in Christchurch was in fertiliser and lime ($101 million) and repairs and maintenance ($29 million). Other categories considered in the research included: recreation; culture and electronics; education; doctors
and other medical services; food and beverages; personal care; home maintenance, and retail trade. The highest level of expenditure from rural businesses was for goods and services in the Food Manufacturing sector ($84 million), the Other Manufacturing sector ($76 million) and the Business Services sector ($63 million). When summing up the total expenditure in Christchurch by farms and their households, secondary flows via rural businesses, and any indirect and induced effects (such as employment generated from this expenditure), the total impact on Christchurch was valued at $2.2 billion which accounts for some 10 per cent of the city’s total gross domestic product. Professor of Trade and Environmental Economics, and AERU Director, Caroline Saunders says the finds are important. “There are arguments out there which maintain that few of the economic benefits stemming from agricultural

activity on the Canterbury Plains finds its way into Christchurch. On the contrary, this study shows that farm-based economic activity is intimately connected with Christchurch’s economic activity and that farm expenditure makes a significant contribution to the city’s economy,” Professor Saunders said. In all likelihood, the impact on Christchurch may be even greater than that stated in the report on account of the Food Processing sector not being included in the study. It is hoped that the research will go some way to support policy makers — particularly with regard to the redevelopment of Christchurch and any broader economic development strategies. The next stage of the research will examine the variability of these expenditure flows in order to assess the economic impact to Christchurch of increased irrigation on the Canterbury Plains.

Strong growth for PGW PGG Wrightson Ltd (PGW) has announced a strong half-year performance under its new chief executive Mark Dewdney. For the six-months ended 31 December 2013, PGW achieved operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Operating EBITDA) of $22.3 million, up from $18.0 million for the corresponding period last year. Bringing science to the orchards New Zealand grows over 400,000 tonnes of apples every year but not all are of high enough quality for the domestic market due to minor skin blemishes. Food technologists and engineers have been working to find a use for these otherwise nutritionally sound apples, rather than discarding them as waste. Dr Lemuel Diamante and his team from the Department of Wine, Food and Molecular Biosciences at Lincoln
University have developed a nutritious and tasty fruit-based food product that is free from artificial preservatives and colouring. They have produced dehydrated blackcurrant-infused apple cubes that have the potential to be used in a whole range of food products from snack foods

to cereals as well as in food products for athletes and in long-life products for people like mountaineers and trampers. Blackcurrants grown in New Zealand are exceptionally high in vitamins and anthocyanins and polyphenols (antioxidants) so it made sense to develop a value-added dehydrated apple product using these two readily-available fruits in a “best of both worlds scenario” that increased the nutritional value of the apples. “One way of producing dried fruits of good quality is to use a pre-drying treatment such as vacuum impregnations of the fruit pieces with nutritious fruit concentrates, which improves food quality,” Dr Diamante said.
“Optimising the vacuum impregnation of fruits is complex as there are a whole range of parameters such as time, temperature, vacuum pressure, proportion of blackcurrant concentrate and nutritional quality that need to be considered. We used a computer-based statistical and mathematical process called response surface methodology (RSM) to do this. “It’s critically important when making any food product, but particularly a new product, that we take these measurements to ensure that a top quality product is produced every time. “It was exciting to work on this project and we are delighted with the final product,” said Dr Diamante.

Even though the official numbers are not available yet, due to scanners not working when the storm came through on Friday, my gut tells me we had more people through the gate. Having been a judge at the show for 15 years and the ambassador for six years I have seen pretty much the best and the worst of the show. It was clear the format had to change. Having been under such tight scrutiny after last year’s poor media coverage and reports, the show had to pull its socks up, and it did, right up in fact. I was very excited as it began to take shape. This year Ellerslie had twice the amount of gardens, more plants and a whole new category — school gardens. The kids are unashamedly the horticultural heroes of the entire show. Each school was given a blank premade facade in which to create a garden that symbolised their school, environment, and cultural views. In its first year eight schools took part — next year it is set to double. I am proud to call Selwyn my home, and I am even prouder of Vicky and Aaron Bartlett from The Outdoor Space in Rolleston for their winning garden. The garden titled ‘Sticks and Stones to Rest my Bones’ won gold and was in
contention for the supreme construction award as well. In the middle of 2013, this lovely couple approached me one exhibitor evening and said they were a small landscaping business based in Rolleston, and did I think they would be capable of exhibiting at Ellerslie? Of course, I said, but I warned them you cannot leave anything on the plate. They listened and learnt and the results speak for themselves. Even if they hadn’t won gold, Vicky’s smile is a medal winner in itself, and a testament to — ‘if you can dream it, and you believe it, you can become it’. Happy Gardening, Rachel Vogan.

A flower pot was made out of a cable wheel. “The children dabbed brown paint on top of the wheel to represent soil. Then they painted their hands and put them around the middle of the wheel to add a bit of colour,” Sarah said. A plaited plastic bag was put around the top of the pot to bring extra decorative appeal and a variety of decorative garden insects were added. “Even if we didn’t win a prize, it would still be a beautiful art display at preschool. It was a great team effort.”

The competition was open to all pre-schools in the Canterbury region with contestants given the challenge of making a flower out of recycled materials. The Bright Beginnings team of children and adults were delighted to win the competition, according to centre owner Sarah Alderson. “We were so excited and proud.
