The 78-year-old was presented with the prestigious Show Legend Award at the 155th Canterbury A&P Show last week. “It was out of the blue that one and I was overwhelmed by the recognition, It seemed all my family knew it was coming but not me.” she said. Mrs Hill began her association with the show when she first competed in

the equestrian section as a 12-year-old. For the last 20 years she has helped organise the programme for the Horse and Pony Section at the Canterbury A&P Show as a member of the Horse Committee. She said she has had a lifelong love of horses. “It first started when my parents bought me a rocking horse when I was

five years old. I think they thought it would satisfy me but it didn’t. “When I was about 12 I went to stay with my sister and her husband in Geraldine when my parents travelled overseas.

The Selwyn District Council is advising all households on the supply they no longer need to boil their water. The Boil Water Notice was put in place after a mains power outage disrupted the UV treatment system on the supply. While no E.coli was detected in the water supply, council couldn’t guarantee the water was safe to drink, so the Boil Water Notice was put in place. A council

spokesperson said they have received water sampling results which show that the water is now safe to drink. “We appreciate residents’ patience while the Boil Water Notice has been in place.” If residents have any questions they can contact the Selwyn District Council on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338 or go to the website, selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

Quality sampling Recreational water quality sampling has found that of the 52 monitored freshwater swimming sites in Selwyn and Canterbury, 12 have improved a grade, and four declined.

During swimming season (November to March), Environment Canterbury (ECan) assesses the health risks from faecal contamination at popular swimming sites around Selwyn and the wider Canterbury region. ECan chief scientists Tim Davie said they test and grade popular places that people swim. “This year 12 sites have improved. The year before, 10 sites improved and the year before that only five improved, so the trend is going in the right direction. “The improvement demonstrates the hard work of landowners to exclude stock and protect waterways by planting and fencing. Reduced runoff from two dry summers has helped as well.”

The monitoring programme follows the national guidance provided by the Ministry for the Environment and Ministry of Health. Sites graded ‘very good’, ‘good’, and ‘fair’ are considered suitable for contact recreation. Sites graded ‘poor’ to ‘fair grade’ are unsuitable for contact recreations. “In 2009 The Canterbury Water Management Strategy set a target of 80% of Canterbury freshwater sites being graded swimmable by 2015 which we have yet to meet but we are close and heading in the right direction,” Mr Davie said. “Overall our aim is to have 100% of Canterbury sites swimmable and a continued improvement towards ‘very good’ grades across the region. ¢

Rainfall boosts summer supplies

Darfield’s show legend

While Selwyn water levels are high the district council is still warning local residents on council supplies to watch their water use over summer.

p Dressage is Jackie Hill’s first love when it comes to equestrian competitions

p Increased lawn watering over summer puts pressure on Selwyn water supplies

Selwyn District Council’s Asset Manager Murray Washington said high rainfall during winter has meant that council is in a good position to meet increased water demand during summer. “There is no immediate need for mandatory water restrictions,” he said. “However, we’re asking residents to consider changing their lawn irrigation timing to help keep the water networks stable. “Water supplies are placed under pressure during summer as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time. “A few simple timing changes can go a long way towards ensuring that council can continue to supply households with water over summer.” Residents on council water supplies are encouraged

to water lawns between 9pm to 6am or 9am to 4pm. “These are times when households use the least water and people should avoid irrigating between 6am to 9am or 4pm to 9pm.” He said it was impor tant residents check weather conditions before watering. “Watering lawns during the middle of the day, during hot days or when a nor’ west wind is blowing results in a lot of water evaporating. “Watering on a cooler overcast day is a better option as water has the opportunity to soak into lawns and gardens.” Mr Washington said if demand for water increases over summer, water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. ¢

“My brother-in-law told my parents the best way for me to get to school was on a horse so they bought me a pony and I got my dream.” She then started competing in equestrian events with dressage becoming a specialty for her and continued to take part in dressage competitions up to the age of 65. She was chair of the Canterbury Dressage Group for a number of years. She first joined the RiccartonFendalton Pony Club before moving on to become an instructor at the Waihora Pony Club for many years. She has now taught all her six grandchildren to ride. She said for her riding wasn’t about collecting trophies but about the pure enjoyment of spending time with the horses and the equestrian fraternity. Mrs Hill was originally from Christchurch but after her marriage to Geoff they first ran a stud farm near

Prebbleton before moving to Aylesbury where they had a sheep farm. The couple moved to Darfield after they retired but both continue to work with their son Richard who is the manager at Flock Hill Station. “It’s just down the road so both of us spend a bit of time there and will go for the odd ride there.” She said she never had a thought of joining the Canterbury A&P Association which she has been involved with since 1997. “One day someone asked me if I’d like to be on the committee, and I did, so I guess I was conned into it.” She has noticed a few changes to the Canterbury show over the years. “It just seems to get bigger and bigger and it is such a wonderful thing now for Christchurch and Canterbury. It brings everybody together,” Mrs Hill said. ¢

Testing for irrigation efficiency

Capital time

u by Kent Caddick

IrrigationNZ will be heading out to Selwyn farms over the summer testing irrigation systems and helping farmers improve the efficiency of their irrigation. Last summer, in partnership with Environment Canterbury, IrrigationNZ developed a new testing programme which saw 131 Ashburton farms with irrigation have their systems tested to see how they were performing. Farmers and farm staff were also interviewed to find out how they manage their irrigation systems. IrrigationNZ Chief Executive Andrew Curtis said over the next three months they will be testing irrigation on around 100 farms in the Selwyn district. “We’ll look at how farmers are operating irrigation equipment, whether water is applied evenly, how irrigation is scheduled and the maintenance carried out on equipment as well as the monitoring of soil moisture and run-off. “Once the testing has been completed, farmers receive their results and have the opportunity to attend a drop-in session. “This provides them with a complete picture of how well their irrigation system is operating and also how they are managing it. Farmers are offered advice on what they can do to improve their irrigation performance,” Mr Curtis said.

MIND YOUR SPEED AROUND SCHOOL BUSES

The testing in Ashburton was carried out on dairy, sheep and beef, arable and deer farms and covered a range of irrigation equipment including centre pivots and travelling irrigators. Show proves popular once again The crowds flocked to Canterbury Agricultural Park for the final day of the 155th Canterbury A&P Show. Show organisers estimate between 50,000 and 60,000 showgoers attended on Friday’s Show Day, with around 100,000 attending over the three days. Show Day culminated as always, with the ultimate prize; the Supreme Champion Animal of Show. This year the Supreme Champion Meat Breed Sheep took out the top prize. Willowhaugh Rock Star is a threeyear-old Southdown Ram owned and exhibited by Christina and Ian Jordan from Blenheim. Paul and Kay Gardner from Ashburton took out the Mint Lamb Competition this year with a purebred Texel. It wasn’t the first time the Gardners had tasted success in the competition – they also won in 2014. Twenty-six-year-old Logan Moore from Rural Livestock Ltd has entered the Heartland Bank Young Auctioneers Competition twice before, and this year was his year to win. of the competition as part of his prize pack. The Dakins Ambassador of the Year award went to Andrew and Tracy Paterson from the wool section. Every year they travel to the show from Central Otago to participate as commercial sheep exhibitors and wool exhibitors. The Ambassador of the Year award honours a competitor who has been seen to support the ideals of the Canterbury A&P Association. The Show Legend Award recognises volunteer effort and was awarded to Jackie Hill from Darfield. Jackie has had a long association with the equestrian section where she has held various positions including general committee member and Isaac Arena ringmaster. In the Shearing Pavilion Alan Gemmell took out the Open Blades Final and Tony Coster won the Open Machines Final. Silver Fern Farms took out the Supreme Champion title in the Trade Exhibitor of the Year competition. DARFIELD

Darfield: Under the Nor’ West Arch With splendid views of the Mount Hutt and Torlesse Ranges of the Southern Alps, Darfield, with its growing commercial and residential area, serves the Malvern district’s arable and pastoral farming area. Darfield is often called ‘the township under the Nor’ West Arch’, a reference to the characteristic Canterbury weather phenomenon. It is the gateway to the scenic attractions of the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers and the alpine splendour of the Southern Alps and its many commercial and club ski fields. Darfield had its origin in the railway, which opened to Sheffield in 1874. The township grew with the expansion of the Midland Line railway and as a rural service centre. From 1874, it was known as White Cliffs Junction, then Horndon Junction from 1876 to 1879 and finally Darfield, to avoid confusion with Hornby Junction. Residential sections were advertised in 1878. Within the township there are farming suppliers, primary and high schools, numerous shops and cafes, a library

and Selwyn District Council service centre, a hospital, volunteer fire brigade, and hotel and motel accommodation. Darfield’s population growth over recent years can be attributed to a number of factors, including growth in the dairy industry on the Canterbury Plains, more lifestyle blocks and people moving out from Christchurch to the new subdivisions. Darfield is the largest township employment area in Malvern, accommodating more than nine times

more workers than the next largest town, Hororata. It is also the largest retail and commercial centre, representing 41% of Malvern township based employment in that sector. The Malvern area takes its name from the foothills at the base of the Torlesse Range, the namesake of which was taken from the Malvern Hills area in the Worcestershire county of England. Malvern County Council was amalgamated with the Ellesmere and Paparua County councils to form the

Selwyn District Council in October 1989. The 2015 population of Darfield was 2,909 people (1,039 households) with this population projected to grow to a 2031 population of 4,141 people (1,479 households). This represents an estimated increase in population of 1,232 people (440 households), which is the largest recorded in the Malvern area. To help guide that growth, and to provide high-level planning direction for Darfield and other townships in the area,

SPOTLIGHT ON the Selwyn District Council formulated the Malvern Area Plan. The Malvern Area Plan was prepared by following the Local Government Act consultative process. Preparation of this document began in February 2015 and involved engagement with Ngai Tahu as the Crown’s Treaty Partner and mana whenua of the district, a number of key stakeholders, council-elected representatives and staff. Technical reports and extensive community consultation also informed this Area Plan. According to council this engagement enabled broad-level baseline information to be documented and relevant issues and local community needs to be identified. These matters collectively informed and shaped preliminary findings contained within the draft Area Plan, published for consultation in May 2016. Further community consultation and ongoing stakeholder engagement took place through May and June of 2016 to review and refine the draft Area Plan. A public meeting to consider formal comments on the draft plan took place in early July 2016 and the plan was formally adopted by council in September 2016. This Area Plan concluded there was sufficient capacity within the township to accommodate growth through to 2031 without the need for council to

However it didn’t preclude any additional greenfield land from being considered for zoning through privately-initiated plan change requests under the RMA. While no new areas for residential, business or industrial purposes have been identified as being necessary to be zoned in Darfield for the growth, the plan did identify a number of issues that needed to be addressed to facilitate additional growth. Those included a current reliance

Transformation games u by Andy Bryenton

When they first said perhaps a decade ago, that the era of the four door sedan was drawing to a close, people laughed. As the hot hatch began to be slowly replaced with the micro-crossover SUV, disbelief was the order of the day. As in fashion and art, the auto world carries a sea-anchor of memories and pre-suppositions. But the hour is at hand. Proof that the landscape has definitely shifted. No, we don’t mean the end of production for the Commodore and Falcon. Take a look at the current range from Nissan. The people who brought us the Maxima, that consummate big sedan,

the Pulsar, available as a hot hatch with a bonnet scoop that could swallow medium sized animals, and ancestrally machines like the Sunny and the 120Y have a very different offering on the forecourt for 2017. It breaks down like this. Perhaps the single best value for money supercar-thrashing sports machine on four wheels — the GT-R. Under that, a coupe which builds on a

history stretching back to the Fairlady Z, and which would make some folks second-guess a Porsche. And afterwards — it’s sports utilities all the way through. There’s some very good ones, at that. The Juke may not be everyone’s stylistic cup of tea, but the crossover market is all about pop art style. Then we have the best-selling Qashqai, the X-Trail, the Pathfinder and the big Patrol as daddy of the family. The Navara ute finishes off a lineup that has no hot hatch, no sedan — and feels like there’s really nothing missing. The shift has happened, we’re in the 21st century, and the car DNA has split. Understanding this has allowed Nissan to create a range that caters to modern tastes with a spectrum of

closely gradated SUVs for every niche, and left their car division free to fly into new realms of lateral Gs and tyre smoke wizardry. Yes, the 370Z is good fun. In New Zealand it comes in only one option, but that’s because you don’t put tomato sauce on a perfectly crafted slice of sushi. But the GT-R is better than good. It’s transcended the hooligan past of the Skyline which went before it, in the same way Dodge’s Viper transcended their range of huge pickup trucks. If a clean split between the SUVs the public desire and the car as kinetic art and science is needed to make this happen, let it happen. In this case, the results have certainly justified the means and the method. ¢

Surfing the new wave u by Andy Bryenton

Hyundai’s latest offering in the compact SUV market enters a very competitive sector, but it comes with a hearty pedigree. The smaller sibling of the much appreciated Santa Fe continues the theme developed with the naming of that consummate family 4x4, taking its monicker from another top surf spot. In this case, it’s the tropical Hawaiian paradise of Kona. The name’s evocative, but then again, so is the styling. You can just picture this spirited looking little sports utility with a pair of classic longboards lashed to the roof rack, parked up next to that pair of evergreen VW’s — the microbus and the beach buggy. Those razor-edge headlights, chrome-stripped running boards, flared black wheel arches and aggressive alloys all scream modernity, but with a cheeky appearance that has been a hit with other small SUVs. As mentioned earlier, it’s a growing sector of the market. The Kona jumps in with the ultra-diminutive Suzuki Ignis for example, but while the car behind the chrome S is retro tiny and cool — like a certain Fiat — the Kona is all new. Take a look inside and you’ll find a symphony of integrated entertainment and informational tech, including wireless smartphone charging. Behind the scenes, a battery of safety features look out for the driver as well, making it easy to follow the Kona’s slogan and set off on intrepid adventures. The one to go for is the top of the line, 1.6 litre gasoline direct injection all-

wheel-drive — a machine which delivers plenty of smiles as well as plenty of smooth power thanks to a dual clutch seven-speed gearbox. As is now common in the small SUV segment, there are two wheel drive models available for

the town driver who never seeks to get dirt on the rims, but who will appreciate the space and driving position of this tropically named, topically stylish and nicely appointed new addition to the Hyundai family.

In an era where the baby sports utility is the new super mini, this is one offering that stands out. Take a test drive and see if you might like to switch to Hawaiian time. Longboards optional. ¢

Fine Lime applied the smarter, easier way! Is the cost of applying lime to your farm holding back your soil fertility and profitability? If you know that you need to apply lime, just like any other soil nutrient, but the volumes you require make your cheque book run for cover… If you recognise that improving soil pH leads to improved nutrient uptake by the plants and stock, then there is good reason for choosing Optimise. Optimise lime is a 100% fine particle but made easier for you to spread because its pressed into a pellet. However, Optimise is more than just lime! You will know that there is an inherent problem with agricultural lime applications - whilst you want effective fine-particle lime, you also require even and accurate application, and you want it to land only on your farm… Our solution to this was to pelletise ultrafine lime and “Optimise” was born as the result. Because Optimise works more efficiently than agricultural lime at reduced rates, due to the greater surface area of the finer particles, it can be applied two to three times over for the cost of one application of agricultural lime in some cases. Trial work demonstrates the effectiveness of using Optimise at 250kg/ha compared to agricultural lime at 2.5T/ha over two years had a similar effect on soil pH, albeit

the lift in pH from using Optimise was achieved much quicker. This provides great evidence for the reduced rates of Optimise and also equates to significant savings on your lime and fertiliser spend, especially on freight and application. Optimise is equally well suited for application by helicopter, plane, ground spreading and drilling. It breaks down quickly for a rapid response benefiting your pasture and crops this year and helps to balance your soils in the years to come. Being more than just fine-lime made easy, Optimise pellets can also conveniently incorporate a combination of S, Mg, P (RPR/Guano) and trace elements in the lime-based pellets, depending on what soil tests reveal. Lime and sulphur combinations are especially cost competitive. It is also very stable when blended with high analysis Nitrogen products, e.g. DAP or Urea making it ideal for a one pass application. Benefits of using Optimise pelletised lime: • Accurate and effective application. • Reduced transport and application costs. • Blend Urea or DAP for a single pass, complete fertiliser. • Add sulphur, RPR/Guano, magnesium, and trace elements, kelp & humates
