An evening of laughs

Selwyn Plunket is presenting an evening of comedy bingo …

Around 300 people, including Lincoln students, staff and representatives from the university’s partner organisations, were invited to the Stewart Building for the address. His Royal Highness said he was “enormously touched” to have been invited to speak at Lincoln and described the institution as one he had “long admired from afar”. “That I have been invited here today to offer a few of my own observations about the state of the global environment is a particular honour for me, but I fear it’s a

worrying indication of how devastatingly serious the situation has become,” he said. The prince said the planet faced a climate and biodiversity emergency and it was clear that the crisis had reached a “tipping point”. “We still have the ability to change course but only in the next 10 years, after which there may be no going back. “Solutions do exist. The crucial question is whether we can bring people, governance and markets together to focus on them.”

The prince praised New Zealand for taking ambitious action, saying the country was offering vital leadership with its climate change target and Zero Carbon Bill. He also stressed the need to “radically change our farming practices” and said above all, “we need to shift our thinking to move towards a truly circular economy that liberates us from the damaging throwaway society we have built”. “I hope you will join me in this movement,” he concluded. 

“I would thoroughly recommend other farmers go to these sessions. There’s nothing like talking to someone. At the very least, they will tell you what you have to do, and I know now where I can get help.” Ness, Leeston, cropping farmer.

“Our Red Badge level students are in the beginner stage, and they all did extremely well,” says coach Kyla Higgins. “The team have only been competing this year and I am really proud of their achievements. It is incredible as nineyear-old Shelby Miller received the Canterbury Award for first overall in all of the competitions this year.” Results were: Kate Vee — First in Trampoline, fourth in Double Mini, Shelby Miller — second in Trampoline, first in Double Mini, Lucia Tully — third in Trampoline, third in Double Mini, Georgia Taylor — fifth in Trampoline, fifth in Double Mini and Jack Snowdon placed first in Trampoline and second in Double Mini. “To get these placings in competitions is a huge accomplishment. My method

of coaching is to get my students perfect at the beginner stage and have them with a good trampoline form in their category to help build their confidence before pushing them into the next level for competing. “We work together on routines and skill, and I love seeing them get new skills as they all have different personalities. It is fun to bring out their individuality and encourage their different ways. I enjoy everything about working with them. The team are training an hour a week, and Kate, Shelby and Jack also are involved in gymnastics, which helps with their coordination and routines. “Our club welcome newcomers to come along and get involved in all levels of gymnastics with us.” ¢

Family members, veterans, RSA representatives and politicians gathered at Springston Cemetery in Selwyn for the rededication of 46 bronze plaques replacing those stolen earlier this year.

“The sponsorship doesn’t stop there. Rolleston Diesel and Petrols will help us with car parts, tyres and other essentials that are not covered by the warranty and Holland Collision Centre will do any maintenance,” says chairperson Olive Webb. “NPD Fuel has offered a discount on petrol, and Austin Bluewater is helping towards insurance costs. “The van has been signwritten with our sponsors by Signtime, and all of this has come about because of the sterling and persuasive work of board member Neil Bennett. Neil’s vision is for people

who are wheelchair bound to be able to get out together and socialise. This has been virtually impossible for many without a means of transportation. “With the help of designated trained drivers we will be able to widen our services within the district and the van will also be available for transporting people to medical appointments. “As with the other drives, there will be a small fee to help cover costs. We appreciate all the businesses and people who have helped make this possible.” For bookings or information contact Juliette on 027 313 1122. ¢

The new plaques were unveiled by family members, many of whom had travelled from outside to attend the rededication. Minister for Veterans the Honourable Ron Mark, Member of Parliament for Selwyn Amy Adams, Selwyn Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall, Head of Veterans’ Affairs Bernadine Mackenzie, RNZRSA National President BJ Clark, Canterbury District RSA President Stan Hansen and Springs RSA President Ivan Norton also attended. The plaques were stolen from the cemetery between April and May. A woman responsible for the theft was sentenced in August to 26 months in prison. There is now an agreement with

all scrap metal dealers in Christchurch to not accept memorial plaques. The plaques were replaced by Veterans’ Affairs, with a contribution of more than $21,000 from its memorial fund, and their installation was overseen by Selwyn District Council. Ms Mackenzie said Veterans’ Affairs was saddened by the theft of the plaques and glad that the rededication offered closure to the families and veteran community. “We are grateful to Selwyn District Council, for identifying the theft and overseeing the installation of the new plaques,” she said. “We are also grateful to the Canterbury District RSA for what it has done to support the families.” ¢

Students in action u by Ann van Engelen

Year nine pupils from Rolleston College utilised their navigational skills last week when they participated in a rogaine on farmland in Hororata. “It was great to have our year nines out of school, being active, working together, problem-solving and taking on a challenge,” says teacher Hayden Shaw. “It was thanks to the Selwyn Sports Trust for organising and running the programme. Rogaining is an orienteering sport of long-distance cross-country navigation. It involves route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. In a rogaine, teams choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximising their score. “There was a bit of teaching preparation prior, around map reading and geography skills to find the different places. It was a good chance to put their problem-solving skills into action while reading the features on the map without a compass. They had to make decisions where to go and choose between the hardest routes for more points, like up steep hills, or go to easier locations and get less points. “They had to interpret the map and work with their team strengths while supporting each other. It gave them the opportunity to learn outside, in a physical context, and decide how to get to the 150 different points such as a

Reward your local school Southfuels is a New Zealand bulk fuel supplier and thanks to their unique Fuel for Schools programme they have a simple and easy way for their customers to give back to their local communities.

The Fuel for Schools programme during the past 10 years has seen Southfuels give back almost $1 million to New Zealand schools and more than $65,000 to Selwyn-based, mainly rurally schools alone, and they don’t show any signs of slowing down. During the last few weeks, another 12 schools in the region have become eligible to receive a $1,000 Sports or Technology package including Templeton Primary, Broadfields Primary, Springston Primary and Greendale Primary Schools. That is due to local committees opting to be part of Fuel for Schools. The programme is very simple. For every 100 litres of bulk fuel that is delivered by Southfuels, 50 cents is given back to the customer’s nominated school. The

balance accrues and once it reaches $1,000 — the schools can redeem from the more than 40 packages on offer. Fuel for Schools coordinator, Alanna Taylor said: “The programme was developed as a way for us to support and give back to the predominantly rural communities in which we operate. We couldn’t reward so many without the wonderful support from those supporting us. On average, we are presenting 30 packages nationwide every three months. The joy and appreciation received from both the students and teachers brings a real sense of pride to us all.” For more information call local manager Dave Beatty on 027 104 7343 or contact head office 0800 99 99 89.

changes in Selwyn

u by Paul Campbell

Selwyn electorate has undergone a review in a report by the Representation Commission, which is proposing changes to half of New Zealand’s electorates and establishing a new electorate in south Auckland. The commission has released its report on the proposed boundaries and names of electorates for the next two general elections. The public will now be able to have their say before the boundaries are finalised in April 2020. “Where possible the current boundaries have been retained to minimise the number of people affected by electorate boundary and name changes. Of the 71 existing electorates, 36 are unchanged. The adjustments in other electorates reflect changes in population since 2014 when the boundaries were last reviewed,” says commission chair Judge Craig Thompson. “Boundary changes are needed to electorates in the Christchurch area because of significant population growth in Selwyn, which is the fastestgrowing electorate in the country.”

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

Selwyn is redrawn and no longer includes Banks Peninsula. Adjustments are also made to Ilam, Wigram, Port Hills (renamed Banks Peninsula), Christchurch East and Rangitata. More detail on all the proposed changes is available online at vote.nz and in the Proposed Electorates 2019 report available at libraries, council offices, Electoral Commission offices and Te Puni Kokiri regional offices. “We encourage people to have a closer look at the changes and what it means for them. The public can make objections on the proposed boundaries and names until December 20,” says Judge Thompson. There will be a counterobjections period from January 10 to 24, and public hearings will be held in February.

SOIL QUALITY FACTSHEET

PRESENTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH VICTORY LIME

Reduce your NPK fertiliser cost by 50%

IT IS understood that growing almost anything increases your soil acidity or lowers the soil’s pH. While Aglime easily corrects acidification the final target pH level for optimum nutrient availability is and always has been a moving target. The absolute building blocks for growth such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Sulphur and Magnesium, are not even close to their peak availability at a pH of 5.5 as shown in the table below. As you can see a pH at 5.5 seems inefficient and illogical. However, a pH between 6 and 6.5 increases availability exponentially and even starts peaking across many nutrients.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL PH AND WHY?

Your soil’s pH is one of the

key drivers in making nutrients available to the plant. With a pH that is too low (< 5.5) trace minerals such as Aluminum become available which can heavily diminish growth or even kill crops. While the general consensus is that a pH of 5.5-5.8 is ‘good enough’, the science just doesn’t back this up.

“One aspect that has baffled us for years, is the apparent disconnect between fertiliser application and the availability or efficiency of the very nutrient being applied due to soil acidity.“ Almost every element of a fertiliser is represented in the nutrient availability table. When you are spending good money on fertiliser, you should be concerned if your advisors aren’t ensuring that the nutrient you are applying is at, or near, maximum availability. If they are not, you need to ask yourself why not? Maybe they have a vested interest in selling more fertiliser? One of the fastest ways to neutralise soil acidity and increase pH is to apply lime. Liming is relatively cheap, especially when you consider that a shift in pH could potentially double the efficiency of a fertiliser in both the short and long term. The fertiliser efficiency table indicates this point and goes some way to show how a capital investment in lime may affect your overall and ongoing annual fertiliser spend.

vanRoestel, J. (2014, March). The Value of Maintaining a Good soil pH.

NOT ALL LIME IS CREATED EQUAL

As a rule of thumb 1 tonne/ha of high quality Aglime will raise the pH by 0.1 pH unit. Therefore a 6 tonne/ha application is required to increase the pH from 5.7 to 6.3. To maintain the optimum pH of 6.2-6.5, maintenance applications of at least 500kg per annum will be required. The above rates are based on high quality Aglime – that means a lime equivalency or ‘as delivered’ Calcium Carbonate content of 90% or greater. The particle size should meet New Zealand Aglime standards of 50% passing 0.5mm and no more than 10% passing 2mm to allow good even spreading and

consistent long term release into the soil. Consider solubility and ensure you are dealing with a limestone resource that has been proven to lift pH as expected. Talk to a few neighbours, they will know the history. Keep in mind that many lime companies can create specific lime and fertiliser/mineral blends prior to dispatch to make your annual applications even more cost effective. SOIL PH TESTING

It is vital that you have a comprehensive soil test done prior to any fertiliser application to show what other trace minerals are present. Talk to your specialist lime company today.

Oi!

u by Ann van Engelen

To fulfil a need in the community, a farmers’ market is in its planning stages for Rolleston and surrounding residents to be held every Sunday morning with the aim to start in late January 2020. “We launched the idea on the Rolleston Community Facebook page last week and have been blown away by the positive response. We received 450 likes within three days,” says organiser Spencer Johnstone. “Rolleston is nearly a city with 15,000 people serviced by two supermarkets with no greengrocer or butcher. My wife Jacqui and I have been doing the Christchurch Farmers’ Market for 12 years and are looking for stallholders to join our network for Selwyn so we can have a vast array of products and produce available. “We own a butchery in Colombo Street, and up until a couple of years ago we also had a pig farm in Greendale. The unfortunate side of what happens these days is the farmer misses out on a reasonable share of any profit. This will give locals the opportunity to buy products from people producing in the Selwyn District. “We are discussing with council now for venue locations and are excited to cross the t’s and dot the i’s for a midJanuary 2020 opening. “Farmers markets bring communities together, and customers get to meet the

They know how it was grown or made and what ingredients are in the product. “Along with the council, we are really keen to hear from growers producing food in the Selwyn area to make sure we have enough stalls on board to make it viable. Hosting the Prince u by Ann van Engelen

The Prince of Wales attended the Lincoln Farmers’ Market as well as New Zealand Institute of Forestry taking an interest in New Zealand’s rural economy on his royal tour last weekend. The New Zealand Institute of Forestry hosted His Royal Highness last Friday at a small round-table meeting. “It was an immense privilege to participate in this discussion with His Royal Highness and to facilitate an exchange of views with some of our outstanding forestry professionals,” said the president of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry Dr David Evison. “The participants were inspired by the importance that His Royal Highness places on sustainable forest management and its contribution to society. “The opportunities and challenges facing the forestry sector in New Zealand were discussed with Prince Charles by 11 forestry professionals. Those present included the 2017, 2018 and 2019 recipients of The Prince of Wales Award for Sustainable Forestry. “The discussion covered the challenges presented by climate change, pest and disease incursions

Counting on chickens

LIFESTYLE BLOCK MOBILE SHEARING

u by Andy Bryenton

One of the most basic pleasures of owning a lifestyle property, and one of the advantages of living on a farm, is the ability to keep a small flock of laying hens to provide healthy, orange-yolked freerange eggs. While those on a large acreage may simply hold a rooster or two and let nature take charge, raising a clutch of little chickens can be rewarding for the small block holder. It need not be an elaborate endeavour, either. Sourcing baby chicks is not difficult, and their needs are easy to address. They are space, food, water and protection from the limited scope of the chick’s abilities. With the most affection in the world, it’s true to say that baby chickens are not the smartest creatures on Earth. They are also hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in ways we humans find detrimental. So a clever coop is the answer. Try to offer plenty of space, even if you only have a handful of chickens to raise. It’s essential to get the temperature right, at 33 degrees celsius, as this puts chicks at ease and stops them from becoming literally ‘peckish’. Use a red bulb to light the enclosure for this same reason. Red spots are invisible to baby chickens under red light, and red spots of blood even just from a feather that’s been pulled loose can cause the little fluff-balls to turn on each other with fatal results. It’s believed that this behaviour was useful in the wild to weed out weak or sickly birds; in captivity, it’s easy to prevent. Reduce the temperature by increments each week for six weeks, until you’re at room temperature. It is also the time to switch to natural light, and exchange baby chick feed for growth-promoting mash. Food and water must be available at all times, but keep water dishes plentiful and shallow — these little creatures have a knack for drowning, especially if they crowd up. For similar reasons, the rearing coop should have no tight corners. Round them off with cardboard, or the chicks at the bottom of a ‘pile’ formed at night for warmth may suffocate. Above all, keep food supplies plentiful and close by. Chickens

like these will not travel far to feed, and once again, you don’t want them to bunch up and trample their little sisters. It might seem from this advice that baby chicks are fragile and accidentprone. You may ask how they ever survived in the wild. However, once you
