p A passing shower did nothing diminish the fun of the fair when the Kirwee and wider Selwyn communities came out in force to celebrate the 143rd annual Courtenay A&P show on Saturday. This year’s show theme was ‘community’ and true to its word the show was very much a family affair with the trade stands, display, rides, drinks and refreshments and show ring action attracting all ages — including local VIPs Amy Adams MP and Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton. A highlight for many was the grand parade, but even that wasn’t enough to draw these kids away for the old-school sandspit and the chance to tinker with toys provided by adjacent trade stands. p The previous indoor Twilight Market drew a large crowd

Denise Leeds and Debbie Herridge who have been running the Selwyn Twilight Market for the last three years have organised a special indoor-outdoor market at the Rolleston Community Centre on Saturday, December 1. It follows the success of a similar market held at the centre in June. The December market is expected to have over 67 stalls with goods and gifts ranging from beeswax wraps, wooden crafts, recycled records, soap and beauty products and just about everything in between. Stallholders range in age from six upwards, Debbie said. For her, that is part of the attraction of the market.

“Denise and I really enjoy running these markets. We have met a huge amount of amazingly talented people and have gone on to make lasting friendships. We really love encouraging craftspeople to give the market a go, and we love to see how they go on to grow and attend other markets. Passion makes all the difference, and when you love what you do, it’s easy,” she said. The 2018 Christmas Twilight Market will be open from 1pm to 4pm. Following the success of the June indoor market, Denise and Debbie are planning on having three similar markets in 2019. ¢

p Prime Minister Ardern at the celebration of the first passenger train journey from Picton to Christchurch since the Kaikoura earthquake

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the investment at a celebration in Kaikoura as the first passenger train ran on the line from Picton to Christchurch, two years after it was closed by the Kaikoura earthquake. “This investment will bring thousands more high-value tourists into the Marlborough, Kaikoura and Canterbury regions, with additional capacity, platform upgrades and our first ever premium carriage,” says KiwiRail acting chief executive, Todd Moyle. “The Coastal Pacific plays a critical role in the economies of towns along its route. Before the Kaikoura earthquake, it brought about 42,000

passengers a year into Marlborough and Kaikoura alone. “With this investment we will see double that number within a decade, creating more than 400 new local jobs.” The $40 million investment will allow KiwiRail to run the Coastal Pacific all year round, adding a 63-seat carriage to meet demand in peak season, and a new luxury premium carriage offering more space and high-quality food and beverages to go along with the spectacular views. “KiwiRail’s purpose is to create stronger connections for a better New Zealand. The announcement is another step toward fulfilling that goal.” ¢

The Rolleston Toy Library committee didn’t let the small matter of some unseasonable weather spoil their first community fundraising event last Saturday. The Toy Drive and Car Boot Sale had been in planning for weeks. The event was intended both as a fundraiser and as a community engagement exercise, said the organisers. “We want the toy library to be seen as a valuable resource for our local families, so the best way to achieve that is to get out amongst the community and spread the word,” said toy library communications coordinator, Michelle Sim. “Of course, nothing happens without money, so this was our first initiative to start raising the funds we need to turn the vision into reality.” Support for the venture was encouraging, with around 25 people booking p Rolleston Toy Library President Fiona Morland (right) accepts a donation of toys from (l-r) Flo, Riley and Jen spaces for the car boot sale, Coetzee of Hororata and others keen to donate toys. Timing key to conserving water

Forecasters are expecting a hot and dry summer during the coming months, meaning it’s time to start thinking about how we use our water in Selwyn.

Meteorologists say it is highly likely Canterbury will have a drier than average summer. Weather patterns over the last few months have been varied, with hot and windy days being interrupted by significant rain. The good news, for the moment, is that Selwyn District Council’s asset manager, Murray Washington, says water demand is manageable. “However, water supplies are placed under pressure during summer as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time. Water demand peaks between 6–9am and 4–9pm,” he said. The council is recommending residents limit garden and lawn

watering to after 9pm, to keep it away from peak usage times and ensure the sun doesn’t quickly evaporate the used water. If considering watering your lawn during the day, it is best to check the conditions and make sure that it won’t be too hot or windy when you do it, which would reduce the effectiveness of the water use. With volumetric charging for water use, consumers are reminded that wasting water can also hit them in the back pocket. Mr Washington believes that with everyone playing their part, the council will be able to provide water at a good pressure all summer. ¢ • All residential, light commercial drainage • Septic Tank systems • Alterations • Excavations • Canterbury Wide • Free quotes

“The students have been busy rehearsing, and can think of no better way to get into the festive season than to be a part of the performance showcasing their talents to the community,” says drama teacher Sandra McLean. “I am excited about the fundraiser and the students are so proud.” Students Sophie Moore, Beth Farrell, Lizzie Ogden, Angus and Kees, say it has been amazing because of the quality costumes, production and acting. Like many others who call Canterbury home, I am very proud of our aquifer-fed drinking water supplies. We have a unique and special resource, and I am therefore wary about the prospect of centralised decision-making, which could see Wellington bureaucrats decide to impose mandatory chlorination of our drinking water. Unfortunately, the indications from Local Government minister Nanaia Mahuta appear to suggest that this may be an outcome from the Three Waters Review, which has been investigating the state and performance of New Zealand’s drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems. The minister appears to be leaning towards the option of compulsory amalgamation of local authority water services despite councils around the country expressing their concern about this. It is disappointing that the minister has pushed out the deadline by announcing that proposals for the regulation of drinking water standards will not go to cabinet for discussion until June next year, with actual decisions not being made until the end of 2019. The minister had previously given the impression that she would give local authorities more information about the regulation of drinking water standards

by October this year. Unfortunately, these delays by the minister make it difficult for local authorities such as the Selwyn District Council to commit to future projects to address growth and ageing infrastructure in their annual and 10-year plans when it is not clear what regulations the minister is going to impose on them. In some cases, ratepayers do not agree with the decisions of their local authorities when it comes to the management of their water, wastewater and stormwater assets, as has been the case recently with consents relating to the operations of a water bottling plant in the Christchurch suburb of Belfast. However, I am sure that when faced with the prospect of decisions around chlorination of water, for example, many Cantabrians would prefer that such decisions were made in the local context, rather than being dictated at a national level. ¢

Quarry use application Resource consent applications from Fulton Hogan Limited relating to the proposed Roydon Quarry at Templeton have been received by Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council. The plan is to establish the quarry, approximately 700 metres west of Templeton. The site is approximately 170 hectares in size, and it is proposed to quarry no more than 40 hectares at a time, to a depth of about 10 metres below ground level. Land use and discharge consents are required from Environment Canterbury, and a land use consent is required from Selwyn District Council. Changes are also required to an existing water permit for the site

to allow for the water to be used for aggregate washing, dust suppression and other quarrying purposes. There will be a joint hearing process for the application to determine if all of the information required has been provided to confirm lodgement and commence processing. An unlimited duration is sought for all land use consents, and a 35-year term is being sought for the discharge consents. The proposed application can be viewed at ecan.govt.nz.

He hopes to use his interdisciplinary background in physical and social sciences to work at the International Panel for Climate Change, with his eventual ambition being to return to New Zealand as the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment. “I feel like I have a lot to give, and for me to fulfil my aspirations as a national

Show president Jane Jenkins said: “We were delighted that over 3,000 people attended the show this year, despite the day being overcast with one rain shower before the grand parade. “This year the show theme was community, and you could definitely see that reflected in the number of entrants, exhibitors and visitors.” Wet weather the week before the show made conditions wet underfoot for the horses in the ring, but all the competitors coped admirably and put on a spectacular show. Richard Westaway, junior vice president of Courtenay A&P Show, has been involved personally with the show for the last 25 years, but his family’s involvement extends more than 100 years. “The Courtenay A&P Show is a real family affair, and it was really good to see members of the local and wider community come and support us. It’s always good to see familiar faces and meet new people. You don’t have to be a farmer or stud breeder to exhibit at Courtenay A&P Show. We have classes in the produce shed where you can enter things like preserves, baking, quilts, photographs, flowers and vegetables. There are also opportunities to enter your feathered friends in the poultry

classes, your terrier in the terrier races and pet lambs and calves,” Mr Westaway said. Stuart Jones, chief officer at Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade, accepted the trophy for Most Outstanding display. “This is the fourth time we have won this award, and we would like to thank the community for their support and sponsorship of the brigade.” Show secretary, Sharon Kellock, said that attendance was slightly down from usual because of the forecast. “But there was a great atmosphere,” she said. Local MP Amy Adams and Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton were both in attendance, and a highlight was the Grand Parade, followed by the Vintage Machinery parade. Other highlights included the record number of trade sites including local Kelvin Sewell, head of the Kirwee Trappers (affiliated with Predator Free NZ), demonstrating traps, methods and information to passers-by. The Ellesmere Pipe Band is always well received, and the St John Ambulance and Search and Rescue Sites were impressive. We share the jobs although I am not allowed on the ride mower because ‘boys have to have their own toys’ and Sunday is my day for putting on shoes to go visiting, but every other day I live in gumboots. There is nothing I don’t like about living rurally.”

Be water wise this summer DON’T WASTE IT

The coolest little camp Only 30 minutes from Rolleston, The Little River Campground is an ideal holiday destination. Why not treat the kids, or get a group of friends and make a weekend of exploring the peninsula. From the rail trail to the beach at Tumbledown Bay, there is plenty to keep you occupied for a couple of days, or you can just kick back while the kids run free in nature. Pack the car, tow the caravan, add the bikes and your friendly dog and head to the ‘coolest little camp around’. The camp is nestled in the sheltered Okuti Valley, five kilometres from Little River village and all it has to offer. Camp beside the river and explore the five hectares of native bush. Kids can be entertained for hours and will love the in-ground trampoline, famous Scary Slippery Slides, the giant swing, exploring the ancient forest with an abandoned film set or feeding the few tame eels. “This is camping like it use to be,” says Marcus Puentener, the manager from the campground. “Old-fashion fun and an ideal place for kids to gain confidence in the outdoors without being

too far from home. On weekends over summer there is usually a session on the scary slippery slides and in the evening a campfire, so bring marshmallows”. The camp hosts scout and school camps as well as relaxed weddings and private events. Your friendly dog

is welcome too. Close to the rail trail, cafes and stores and only 30 minutes to secluded beaches. Costs are from $10 a child and $15 adult. Get in touch via email at littlerivercamp@gmail.com, visit littlerivercampground.co.nz or call 03 325 1014.

When the chips are down u by Andy Bryenton

Green waste — it’s an inevitable by-product of gardening, and it can be a hassle to dispose of. Even those of us who have a friendly neighbourhood garden bag company to dispose of our clipping and prunings, often wish for a way to stack more in the bag, and for those who dispose of it themselves, it can be a costly and annoying chore to shift. This time of year, with plenty of sun and rain causing riotous growth and the outdoor entertaining season well upon us, the clippings can pile up. Many small garden and block owners will question the need to buy a large petrol powered wood chipper to tackle the leavings from shrubs and bushes. That’s where Stihl’s new range of electric garden shredders come in — a perfect middle ground between the sheer grunt of a big chipper and dealing with prunings manually. The range contains everything from small units able to be shifted with one hand and suitable for disposing of soft clippings from garden beds right through to the big GHE 250s, which effortlessly shreds small branches and whippy bunches of twigs down to size. Outside, they are formed from the same toughened plastics, which Stihl use to craft the casings for chainsaws and brush cutters — easy to keep clean and able to absorb the knocks they’re likely to take around the garden. Inside, a powerful electric motor drives a patented ‘sandwich’ of tough blades, much like an upgraded and strengthened version of the business end of a paper shredder. This series

In fact, those who don’t want to pick up the collecting hopper and dump it directly to a waiting garden bag will find that the resultant ground-up mulch a perfect addition to the compost heap — or a fine substrate to pack right back onto non-ornamental gardens. Retro revisited u by Andy Bryenton

In interior design, the concept of deconstruction has come to mean different things to different people. From peeling back layers of a building to reveal its past, through to mixing and matching furniture, which has been deliberately distressed or remade, to taking apart the traditional forms and angles, which make up our interior spaces themselves, and crafting new forms with the character of crystals, origami or geological features. These trends play with space — but there’s one strand of this movement which blends time into the mix as well. Taking cues from a swathe of eras retro deconstructionism mixes not just the past with the future — for example, baroque lighting fixtures mixed with glass and chrome from the 1980s and Victorian era wallcoverings — but with futures that never came to be. The emphasis is on personality and no small amount of personal nostalgia. Think of this matching and blending of styles — 1950s retro-futurism with its fins and chrome, understated Georgian utilitarian elegance, art deco curves and cyber-punk sheer facets — as a little like molecular gastronomy in cooking. Unexpected flavours can combine to create something more stunning than either. The other good news is that this style embraces some of the best of the old, but also allows the best of the new. Modern hardwood flooring systems, for example, allow for a blank canvas which

is both cutting edge — and also evokes the simplicity of yesteryear. Favourite old cabinets with their patina and mellow aged glow can be augmented with threedimensional printed accessories. We all have beautiful vintage objects from many times — as eclectic and

different as antique typewriters, 1960s cameras and 1980s toys. This interior design choice is a way of expanding that aesthetic through your whole home, taking a step beyond the ‘shabby chic’ ethos of looking lived in, to an aesthetic of being lived in by a true individual. ¢

My home, my service station

DARFIELD

u by Andy Bryenton

The home of the very near future may very well end up serving an extra role with the rise of the electric vehicle or EV. Sales of these petrol and diesel free cars are on the rise, with more than three and a half thousand registered in 2017 and that number set to be even bigger this year. As the future of motoring looks toward an electrically powered tomorrow, people will increasingly look to charging solutions in the home. However, what will that mean in terms of infrastructure? The easiest way to ensure a full battery for the morning commute is, of course, to plug in overnight, taking advantage of off-peak power prices to be ready for the day’s drive ahead. Some have speculated that this will mean an end to the concept of night-time offpeak power itself, as the EV fleet grows. Even if half of our road fleet for private passenger use were to switch from internal combustion, power companies estimate that this would only account for less than ten per cent of grid capacity. The bigger factor is safely converting the home garage into a docking facility to keep those batteries full. Industry experts warn that a simple plug socket may not be enough to get the job done and that it’s best to fit a specialised charging unit at the same time as purchasing an EV. It means consulting with a qualified electrician and making sure that the switchboard has the capacity for adding on this new function. Using extension cables as

one would for a power drill or electric line trimmer is right out — the power load is likely to be too much for them and may lead to a fire hazard. Similarly, some charging solutions are not built as robustly as others. When choosing an EV, talk to the auto dealer about appropriate charging points — ones that support the vehicle’s warranty. Already the market has seen cheaper, less reliable charging products which

warn, for example, against charging in the rain. A good quality charging system should be robustly weatherproof and can cost as little as two to three thousand dollars — a small investment set against the $40k to $60k average of a new EV. The best advice — have a home assessment undertaken by an electrician who is armed with knowledge from the vehicle maker before you buy, and future-proof your garage for the long haul. ¢
