The school, which opens to students from Year 0 to 6 in early February, will teach traditional Christian values using a collaborative teaching model. “I’m really looking forward to getting the school culture developed from the get go,” Ms Horn said. “We want to build a culture with Christian values, where students have an outward focus and at the same time develop themselves as unique individuals.”

Ms Horn said the school is halfway through the building process. “The classrooms are really smartly designed. They have sliding doors, so they can be opened up to cater for times when you want a big learning space, or closed off into smaller rooms for quiet learning times,” Ms Horn said five teachers will be employed initially. They will work collaboratively so that students are

Plans for the changing shape of Selwyn from rural sprawl to urban mass have been given the green light as the district faces pressure from a continuing population boom in Rolleston and surrounding towns. The Selwyn 2031 strategy, which estimates population growth from around 50,000 to over 74,000 by 2031, anticipates up to 80% of the district’s population growth will occur in urban areas. “This signifies a substantial shift in the make-up of Selwyn with the district becoming more urbanised and the separation between large and small townships becoming more apparent,” the strategy said. The strategy projects the majority of urban growth will occur in Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton and West Melton with the addition of 30.405 people or 11,000 households by 2031.  Room One at Sheffield School pose with a painting sent to them by Dunedin based artist Ewan McDougal

The story began at the beginning of the year, when students in room one at Sheffield School embarked on a New Zealand artist study. Teacher Kay Kala said they decided to focus on South Island artist Ewan McDougal. “His use of bright vibrant colours, textures, themes and techniques are appealing and fascinating,” she said. “So we set about being Ewan McDougal inspired artists for a term and produced a display that we proudly put up in our boardroom. “What we didn’t know is that one of our parents knew him and snapped a few pictures of our efforts and sent them to Ewan. Ewan apparently was quite chuffed.” But the story doesn’t end there as during last term the class learnt McDougall was ill and in hospital. “We decided a bit of Sheffield School medicine might brighten his day in hospital and made a card with artistry inspired by the artist himself,” Ms Kala said.

Board on the move  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The Selwyn Central Community Board has decided to take its meetings to the people, in the hope of becoming better connected with its community. The community board, which normally meets monthly at the Selwyn District Council headquarters in Rolleston, will trial having two meetings in community venues in West Melton and Rolleston in 2015. “We’re going out to the community rather than expecting them to come to us,” Diane Chesmar, chair of Selwyn

Central Community Board said. “We are the community board and we need to be more accessible.” The idea was put to the board several months ago by SDC CEO David Ward. He said holding meetings at community venues worked well for the Malvern Community Board who held meetings in community venues in towns such as Hororata, Kirwee and Glentunnel. Mrs Chesmar said she hoped the first meeting held away from council headquarters would happen in March next year. “We’re hoping to hear from the community about what’s going on. We need to know what the issues are,” she said. 

Reducing welfare dependency  by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Now that the official opening of the 51st Parliament is over and I have been once again sworn in as the MP for Selwyn, I am looking forward to getting back to the business of being a local MP, as well as settling into my roles as the Minister of Justice, Minister for Courts, Minister of Broadcasting and Minister for Communications.

The reason I put myself forward to be an MP was because I want our country to be a great place for my children to grow up, live and eventually work in. It is therefore encouraging to see figures of 1,600 people coming off welfare and entering the workforce each week, which indicates to me that we are on the right track. It is particularly pleasing to see that Canterbury is one of two regions (along with Auckland) which have seen the greatest reductions in the number of people receiving Jobseeker Support over the past year. This can in part be attributed to the ‘The voice of your community’buoyant local economies and number of job opportunities available, but is also a result of the Government’s approach to

assisting people to move from a benefit into work. The Government has identified that sole parents, particularly those who go on a benefit in their teens, have historically had the highest lifetime costs of any group in welfare and have been more likely to remain on a benefit for the longest. To address this problem, we have provided millions of dollars of targeted support and childcare assistance to sole parents to help them train and study for a qualification so that working while raising children is achievable. Investment in such strategies will pay off for generations to come as it helps to reduce the risk of the children of beneficiaries being trapped in a life of welfare dependency with limited choices. 

A new business venture harnessing the creative power of building with Lego has opened its doors in Rolleston. House of Bricks was launched by plastic block enthusiasts Jason and Rachel de Vries who are offering birthday party visits, community events and inhome displays and free play for anyone who loves to build with Lego. “There’s nothing like this in Selwyn,” Rachel de Vries said. “Everyone seems to love it.” With over $60,000 worth of Lego culminating in over 200,000 pieces, the de Vries family are well equipped for their new venture.

They started Lego sessions earlier this year, visiting schools and community days, which Rachel said was a great success. “Teachers were saying they’ve never seen the children concentrate so well. It was great to see the children working as a team.” Now they have opened a studio in their home where people can visit on Saturdays or by appointment to look at the family’s Lego displays and to have a go at building with Lego.

Fire restrictions introduced Rising temperatures and drying north west winds have led the Selwyn District Council to introduce a restricted fire season status this week. “The fire risk in Selwyn has increased over the past two weeks as weather conditions have become drier so it is now appropriate to introduce a restricted fire season to reduce the fire danger,” Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said. Under a restricted fire season, only gas barbecues, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn although there are 4 conditions to be met. Any other fires can only be lit if a permit has been obtained from the council. “Although paddocks in the district look green, the vegetation and soil are much dryer than normally experienced at this time of year,” Mr Marshall said. “We have also experienced many strong north west winds recently which further dry out the soil and vegetation. Almost $40,000 has been allocated to 18 community events by Selwyn District Council through its Events Fund. A wide range of local events received funding, including the Hororata Highland Games, Children’s Day, the Lincoln University Dairy Farm Open Day and the Lincoln Multicultural Festival. Council is also underwriting the Rolleston Fireworks Night to the tune of $10,000 while an additional grant of $2,525 was made to the Rolleston Residents’ Association which runs the event. The Selwyn Sports Trust received a total of $8,300 to help run three events, the Selwyn Running Festival, the Lake Crichton Triathlon and Duathlon, and the Koru Games. Mayor Kelvin Coe said the fund was established last year to support events held in Selwyn which are open to the public and attract local, regional and international visitors as well as benefitting and promoting the district. “We established the fund as there are an increasing number of events happening which help make our district a great place to live in and attract people to come and visit Selwyn,” Mayor Coe said. “Events are usually organised by community organisations and the council is pleased to be able to support their work through grants from our Events Fund.” The next events funding round will open in July 2015. 

A cracker of a nut  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

When former primary school teacher Jenny Lawrence first bought eight hectares of land in West Melton in the 1980s with husband Malcolm, she had no idea how nutty she would go. Twenty seven years later Jenny reflects on how a dream to have a little bit of land in the country developed into running her own walnut processing factory, and supplying walnut products to clients throughout New Zealand. The purchase of a parcel of land down

“Our priority was to have an environmentally friendly house.” Shortly after they purchased their first piece of walnut processing machinery while on a trip in the North Island and set it up in their garage at home. A year later they set plans in place to build a walnut processing factory and the business ‘A cracker of a nut’ began. “We didn’t intend on having a factory in the beginning. We just wanted to be walnut growers.” Thinking ahead the couple not only built a shed where they could process walnuts, but they also looked at the ‘added value’ products they could produce, such as walnut paste which can be used in sauces, as a spread or as a base for roast chicken stuffing. In 1998 they decided to manufacture walnut oil which they did for a couple of

a quiet country road was significant for the Lawrences who were living in Christchurch at the time. To say it was their baby is no exaggeration. “The property was a replacement for not having children,” Jenny said. “Then we were surprised when we ended up having two children as well.” The property was bare except for a well and small shed. They wanted to plant trees, and chose walnut trees after attending a seminar about the up and coming industry which was relatively new to New Zealand. “We liked the versatility of the nut. There are so many things you can do with it. They are nice trees also. We could see the potential for the young industry.” In 1989 they began planting their first walnut trees and five years later they had over 500 trees on the property. They chose to grow the Rex and Meyric varieties of walnuts. In the early 90s the couple had a friend design a home which was built around a natural sand hill on the property. Their eco house had solar panels and double glazed windows as part of the design.

years off-site at a factory in Marlborough. The opportunity arose to buy the oil press and so an extra room was added onto the factory to provide the wet area for the walnut oil production. It was around this time that Jenny started employing people to help in the factory as Malcolm continued his work as an accountant in the city. With the ever increasing expansion of the business Jenny now employs the equivalent of eight full-time workers. In reality this means over 20 workers are on the books with some, including students, working part-time evening and weekend shifts. They produce a variety of products from the factory. Jenny said the biggest seller is the walnuts, sold in pieces, halves or whole in the shell. They also produce and sell walnut paste, oil, flour

Walnuts are supplied to the factory by people from around New Zealand, with the most coming from Canterbury, then Central Otago and Marlborough and a small amount from the North Island. There are around 300 suppliers on the books, with 70 regulars. Each year they process around 100 tonnes of nuts in their shells, resulting in approximately 30 to 40 tonnes of walnut kernel.

Their clients are manufacturers, retailers, caterers, fresh fruit and vegetable outlets, whole food and health shops and a select group of supermarkets. The bulk of their orders come from Auckland. As for the discarded walnut shells, these are ground down and sold as abrasive cleaners to specialists. Some are also used for landscaping. Jenny said she started the business doing nearly everything herself, but over

the years she has learnt to set up roles and delegate jobs, to the point where now the factory runs so well she is able to go away for a couple of weeks holiday if she wants to. Is Jenny still nuts about nuts? You bet she is, and she’s probably heard every nut joke there is over the years. If you ask her nicely she might even tell you a few. 

Movember for men’s health

Day care for the family pet

Only one in four Kiwi guys claim they’re the happiest and healthiest they’ve ever been, according to new research released by the Movember Foundation.

Day-care options in Selwyn are not just for those with children, but also for pet owners with doggy day-care offered by Bunny Lodge near Templeton.

 Dogs enjoying the pool area at Bunny Lodge

Bunny Lodge is a well-established boarding facility for domestic animals, including dogs, cats and even the odd chook, rat and kune kune pig. Bunny Lodge was bought by present owners Tim and Margo Harrison nine years ago and the couple have been adding more services ever since. One of those services is doggy day-care where owners drop their canine companions off at the start of the day for activity and companionship with other dogs. “The funniest thing is Monday morning, it’s like children going back to school,” Tim said.

“They arrive in the car and they’re so excited to be back with their mates.” While some dogs visit once a week others come every day. Both working and stay at home people choose to use doggy day-care which gives their dog companionship and behavioural management training from expert dog handlers. Training tips are passed onto owners. With five hectares of land, a swimming pool for dogs and individual heated units for those who stay overnight, Bunny Lodge offers and home away from home for creatures great and small.

My Italian Kitchen: tiramisu magic  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Although a very well-known Italian dessert, tiramisu is quite a recent addition to Italian dining tables, having been invented in the 1960s. Tiramisu which means ‘lift me up’ or ‘pick me up’ in Italian and refers to the all important ingredient of coffee which promises to give a boost to those who indulge in its pleasures. The winning combination of sponge dipped in coffee and combined with a chocolate and cream filling is hard to beat and it’s not difficult to see

why this dessert has become so popular. Tiramisu should be served semifreddo, not frozen, but cold. There are many variations for tiramisu, but the original has simple ingredients of sponge fingers, eggs, sugar, coffee, cocoa and mascarpone cheese. The following is a recipe from Giada De Laurentiis. This recipe uses bought sponge fingers,

but to be even more authentic you can find a recipe online and make them yourself. This recipe uses raw egg which is not suitable for everyone, including pregnant women. 

Tiramisu

Ingredients 6 egg yolks 3 tablespoons sugar 1 pound mascarpone cheese 1½ cups strong espresso, cooled 2 teaspoons dark rum 24 packaged sponge fingers ½ cup bittersweet chocolate shavings, for garnish

Method In a large bowl, using an electric mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg yolks and sugar until thick and pale. This will take about five minutes. Add mascarpone cheese and beat until smooth. Add one tablespoon of espresso and mix until thoroughly combined. In a small shallow dish, add remaining

espresso and rum. Dip each sponge finger into espresso for only five seconds. Letting the sponge fingers soak too long will cause them to fall apart. Place the soaked sponge finger on the bottom of a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, breaking them in half if necessary in order to fit the bottom. Spread evenly half of the mascarpone mixture over

the sponge fingers. Arrange another layer of soaked sponge fingers and top with remaining mascarpone mixture. Cover tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate for between two and eight hours. Before serving, sprinkle with chocolate shavings. A tavola non si invecchia, meaning ‘at the table with good friends and family you do not become old’.

Coffee in a bag  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Do you like your coffee on the go, but don’t want to have to wait in line at the coffee shop? Now you can brew your own cup of 100% fresh New Zealand roasted coffee with Zed’s coffee bean bags. This is a truly Kiwi innovation and a world first. Jed’s Coffee Co is the only one to produce a pyramid shaped coffee bag which combines the technologies of brewing tea and coffee. The path to perfection starts with the clever shape of the bean bag, which lets

the fresh coffee brew like it does in a plunger. The secret is the two squeezes with a good brew in between. As well as promising a brewed coffee taste, this product also promises convenience and ease of use. Just place the bag in your coffee mug, add water, give the bag a gentle squeeze and let it brew for three to five minutes, giving it a little jiggle along the way. Give it a
