One of the organisers, Trisha Pullin, said she and the organising committee were “absolutely delighted” with how the event turned out. “We were a little worried at the beginning, because of the windy conditions. But we got clearance from the Fire Service and from that point it was all on, and people were coming

through the gates in droves,” she said. Fireworks were the feature of the night. Moreover, there was a lot more on offer to entice the crowd at this familyorientated event. Four primary school bands and the Lincoln High Youth Band provided the entertainment; Centrestage offered up the theatrical flair; there was no

shortage of rides and stalls to keep children entertained and families fed. The Selwyn Youth Support team ran a free obstacle course and offered a free phone charging station; the NZ Army came up with a Pinzgauer vehicle for children and adults to climb in and ask questions of the army personnel present. Children’s university coming An award-winning education programme aimed at giving highquality educational experiences to children is coming to New Zealand, and Canterbury universities are the first to provide it. The University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, with the University of Adelaide, are establishing New Zealand’s first Children’s University. Local stakeholders, including iwi, are also involved. A pine plantation is the habitat of choice for the endangered karearea – the New Zealand falcon. That’s where most of the remaining 4,000 pairs of this spectacular bird live. A freshly harvested forest block makes ideal nesting and hunting territory. Tall adjacent pines give the adults vantage points for spotting their prey.

“We are grateful to the Canterbury District Health Board for making the space available, and visitors to the hospital and others are most welcome to stroll or sit and relax in the pleasant environment,” says garden coordinator, Ruth Wood. “We have six raised beds which are used by various individuals and groups, for example, the Lincoln Kidsfirst Kindergarten, to grow their own produce. We also have two larger community plots where we grow vegetables to give away or to sell for fundraising.” A small group of volunteers meets weekly, usually on a Thursday afternoon, to maintain the garden area and undertake various projects.

“In addition, we run workshops on Saturday mornings and held nine workshops this year on topics as diverse as apple tree maintenance and production, managing stone fruit trees, understanding your soil, composting techniques, an introduction to bonsai, backyard biodiversity, worm farming and the basics of vegetable gardening. These are very well supported and people from as far away as Rangiora and Ashburton come along to learn. We ask only for a gold coin donation.” For more information contact Ruth Wood 03 325 2193 email ruth.wood@ xtra.co.nz or visit the Lincoln Envirotown Trust website lincolnenvirotown.org. nz. 

Toy library looking for space  by Mike Isle

A group of local mums passionate about giving Rolleston its first toy library say they are making good progress but could do with a little help.

 The Rolleston Toy Library committee with their children (from left): Robyn Mears and Holly Mears, Hannah Jozko and Zara Jozko, Kenzie Mears, Fiona Morland (back) and Paige Morland, Amy Pailthorpe, Magenta Tucker, Michelle Sim and Alex Sim

The proposal is the brainchild of Fiona Morland. “We enjoyed being part of a toy library in Christchurch, and I was surprised that there wasn’t one here,” she said. “With so many young families in Rolleston I thought we should set one up.” However the committee set up by Fiona is struggling to find suitable premises and Fiona said the fact that Rolleston is such a fast-growing young

community means that free space is hard to come by and they would welcome any offers of space — from potentially shared facilities to sheds, containers or garages. To start things off, a toy drive and car boot sale will be held at Rolleston College at 10am on November 24. The group has a Facebook page — Rolleston Toy Library — and Fiona can be reached at rollestontoylibrary@gmail. com. 

Four generations at the kindy

West Melton Kindergarten and Nursery was established in 2002 out of the need for an Early Childhood Centre and is now celebrating four generations of the family at the facility. “We opened the centre to provide a caring family environment for children in our community to play and learn together. I cared for children in my home and continually received enquiries regarding the need for quality childcare. We were the first childcare in the area, and our learning centre was added a few years later,” says the owner, Penny Calder. Since day one, Penny’s mother Jackie Butt, fondly called Gran by the centre children, has visited, helping where necessary — gardening, cleaning, dressing up for concerts and interacting with the families adding to the family culture of the centre. “We built the centre on my grandparents’ original farm, which my parents had purchased so the family connections continue,” says Penny. “My granny used to visit and loved watching the children and was very much a part of the local community. My daughter Libby works in administration, and her daughter Isla-May attends the nursery. Having four generations of our family around is really special. “It is a privilege to teach and care for the children in our community.

 Libby-May McColgan, Penny Calder, IslaMay McColgan and Jackie Butt are the four generations at West Melton Kindergarten and Nursery

Our centre is built on strong family values, and we thrive to create a ‘home away from home’ environment for our tamariki. Our wonderful teaching team are all qualified and experienced. We enjoy parents and caregivers joining in because children are our greatest asset and we are passionate about ensuring they have the best start they can in our care.” Visit the centre any time or for more information go to westmeltonkindergarten.co.nz. 

Award-winning book supports SPCA

Celebrating a long history  by Ann van Engelen

 by Mike Isle

Two Darfield High School Students have won the prestigious XCHC YES Excellence Award for Customer and Market Engagements at this year’s Lion Foundation Young Enterprise regional final. Bridget Leach and Elyse Kerr, both year 13 students at the school, and acting under the corporate entity Anover, won the award for the fundraising project they created to support the SPCA. The pair created a colouring book — Cupcake and Friends — that has images to colour and real-life stories of animals the SPCA has rescued. The book has been published and is now on sale. Elyse Kerr said they choose the SPCA because animals are close to their hearts. “Both of us are proud owners of rescue animals, and we are passionate about helping any animal that is the same position our pets were. “After getting in touch with the SPCA, Cupcake and Friends was born.” Caroline Harrington, who teaches commerce at Darfield High School, said that Bridget and Elyse showed huge determination and self-drive to run their own business. “They challenged themselves and took advice when required. In creating a colouring book, they have come up with a fun and interactive way to educate children on how to care and treat animals and pets, as well as raise funds for Canterbury SPCA.” XCHC’s operations manager, Preston Hegel, who presented the award, said he remembers the

project because it was so real. “I think in a world of media we all want a stronger connection to the things around us. Anover uses real-life stories from animals that have been saved by the SPCA, and though the product is for young people, it also educates adults and is an excellent way for every family member, even grandparents, to spend productive and fun time with little ones. Cupcake and Friends can be purchased through Anover’s Facebook page or on their Storbie page anover. mystorbie.com. The cost is $15, and 25% of all profits go to Canterbury SPCA. 

To mark 140 years of the Victoria St Chapel at Glentunnel, people travelled from near and far to remember days gone by with vintage cars, butterfly cakes, linen tablecloths and fashion from the 1930s. A visit to the Glentunnel Museum, an afternoon tea, dinner and church service were part of the celebrations. “The chapel was originally built in Kirwee for the Baptist Church in 1878 by Reverend Decimus Dolamore — the first Baptist minister in New Zealand. The building was later relocated by traction engine to Glentunnel in 1936 and has remained in use ever since,” says event organiser, Judy McLean. An elder from the chapel, Mr Smart, had the idea to hold the celebrations. Thirty thousand dollars’ worth of fireworks, coordinated by Templetonbased Fireworks International, went up in flames in a matter of minutes — leaving many of the children with open mouths, enthralled by the truly spectacular display. It is not the first time there has been a firework display at Foster Park, but many said it was the best. The annual event is the brainchild by a group of volunteers from the Rolleston Residents’ Association and representatives from many local schools, sporting codes and non-profit groups from the wider Rolleston area.

Apart from celebrating the night safely, and to give the community a family fun night, it is also run to help support all these groups. Trish Pullin said the event costs in excess of $70,000 to put on, wholly paid for from funds collected at the gate and donations. Any profit is then distributed to the community groups involved. “It was a fun family evening. The crowd was very well-behaved, and the organisers were very happy with the night,” Trish Pullin said. Sponsors included: Pub Charity, Accessman and the Selwyn District Council. 

Police probe fireworks blaze

 by Mike Isle

Police are investigating an incident involving fireworks in Selwyn last Saturday want to speak to the occupants of two vehicles in the area at the time. “About 7pm on November 3, a witness reported two vehicles on Newtons Road that appeared to be chasing each other, and shooting fireworks at each other out the windows,” said Senior Constable Chris Caldwell, Rolleston Police. “The cars involved were a BMW and a Mazda RX8, and both the vehicles were reported as speeding off in the direction of West Melton. “A fire then broke out in a hedge where the fireworks had hit, and quickly spread, resulting in significant damage to several hedge-rows and gardens, as well as threatening the house on the property. A rideon lawnmower sitting near one of the hedges was incinerated as a result of the fire. The occupants of the property were evacuated for the night while fire crews dampened

down and monitored overnight.” Sr Constable Caldwell said it was likely the occupants of both vehicles knew each other, and they may not have realised their actions started a fire, as they had fled before it started. However, their actions were extremely dangerous given the high winds at the time. The BMW is described as silver, with 18-inch mag wheels while the RX8 is a distinctive metallic blue with tinted windows, black wheels, and white writing on an angle on the rear windscreen. “Police continue to make inquiries to identify these vehicles and want to speak with the occupants or anyone else who has information on the incident.“ Contact Christchurch Police on 03 363 7400. 

Body and soul expo  by Mike Isle

An opportunity to learn more about natural healing and wellness techniques and stock the Christmas stocking with unique gifts are features of Selwyn’s first-ever body and soul wellness expo. The one-day expo at Lemonwood Grove School next Sunday will have something for everyone says organiser, Sarah Emma. “The idea behind the expo was to have as many different techniques and treatments as we could get to encourage people to try an alternative or something new to help with stress, aches and pains, and to encourage healthier thinking and emotional wellness.” The expo will have 39 stalls covering a vast array of natural healing techniques. “Often people have heard of a technique or a treatment but don’t know much about it, so here is a wonderful opportunity to find out more or to have a taster session. We have tried to use as many local practitioners as possible,

so that if people are drawn to have more of something they experience at the expo they don’t have far to travel,” Ms Emma said. The experiences Sarah Emma speaks of include everything from crystal healing and reiki to online development courses and nutritional advice. “Most stalls will also have products for sale, which will make wonderful and unique Christmas gifts,” Ms Emma said. Only limited EFTPOS is available, so Sarah Emma recommends visitors bring cash if they want to stock up for Christmas. The Selwyn Body and Soul Expo is on from 11am to 4pm, Sunday, November 11 at Lemonwood Grove School. Admission is free. 

Feedback sought on road safety plan The New Zealand Transport Agency is calling for public comments on a draft plan to improve safety on State Highway 1 between the Selwyn River and Ashburton. Safety barriers to stop head-on crashes, rumble strips to give drivers a wake-up call, and intersection improvements are among possible changes to a high-risk stretch of State Highway 1. The NZTA has released a proposed plan and is encouraging people to have their say at one of three community drop-in events later in November. “We have been investigating ways to make this road safer as too many

people are being killed and seriously injured in crashes,” says NZTA system manager, Pete Connors. “To make sure we get things right we asked people who use the road what makes this road feel unsafe and what worries them the most. We used this feedback, alongside our research, to shape this proposed plan.” The proposed plan includes: • Installing flexible road safety barrier down the middle of the road to stop head-on crashes. • Adding turn-around areas at regular intervals to give local people in particular places to safely turn around. • Changing some intersections, so there is no right turn in or out of side roads. It can help prevent side on (T-bone) crashes caused by drivers turning across the busy highway. That will also prevent drivers from crashing into the back of vehicles that are waiting to turn right, and vehicles stacking over the railway line while waiting to turn right. • Improving other intersections and adding right turning bays to make those intersections safer.

Auto artistry and family fun

CHALLIS Motorcycles

 by Andy Bryenton

Mr Benz intended to replace the horse and carriage with engineering when he invented the internal combustion engine, but what he launched back in the late 1800s was, in fact, one of the most important art movements of the last thousand years. From airbrushed lowriders to gleaming hot rods, wicked customs to immaculate classics, the automobile has come to represent freedom and personal expression as well as a means of travelling for A to B.

Now a showcase of the greatest cars ever built is coming once again to a grassy field in Rolleston, celebrating our collective obsession with rolling steel and big horsepower for a good cause. More than 1,000 vehicles will gather for the 2018 Selwyn Motorfest to raise money for the Canterbury West Coast Rescue Helicopter Trust, in the process bringing together families for a day of entertainment and fun. On November 25, opposite Rolleston College, machines from Tokyo to Detroit, Stuttgart to Turin will come together for your viewing pleasure, spanning all the great eras of the automaker’s art. There will be exotic classics, speed machines, artfully restored hot rods, powerful muscle cars, tuned Japanese imports, chromed big rigs and more. Alongside concoursequality restorations, you’ll find wickedly modified custom vehicles. Military and rescue vehicles will share the field with British sports cars and one-off creations finished in shimmering candy-flake paint. For those who appreciate the full spectrum of automobilia, it’s heaven on earth. Adding to the fun will be a full schedule of live entertainment, plenty

of stalls to satisfy the hungriest appetite for hot food and cold drinks, and ample fun for the kids, including face painting and bouncy castles. Last year more than 6,000 visitors came through the gates, helping raise in excess of $28,000 for charity — this year the organisers plan to top this figure with an even bigger event. The cars are registered, the trucks are ready to roll, and the date is set. All that remains is for you to mark the date and time in your diary — 10am
