that it is some kind of exclusive organisation. “It is not, and we want to be inclusive and ensure that we cater for the changing demographics of the Ellesmere and wider Selwyn community.” He said to do that one of the things they have changed is the branding of the show to the Ellesmere Spring Show rather than A&P Show.

Organisers are estimating a crowd of around 20,000 passed through the turnstiles at the event, which has been going for almost 150 years. This year’s show president Doug Michael said it was hard to get a really accurate attendance figure. “At the gate we only charge people over the age of 12, so we don’t have a count for those under that age, and also there are all the contestants, show entrants, exhibitors, judges, stewards

p Selwyn artist Bridget Carr is running a programme aimed at stimulating memory through art creation

Led by local Selwyn artist Bridget Carr, the sessions aim to encourage memory recall through the process of creating art. Ms Carr is a facilitator for The Laura Fergusson Trust residential facility therapeutic art classes in Christchurch. District Arts Coordinator Becca Bouffandeau said the students have responded well to the class and the chance to be creative. “International research tells us that engaging in structured arts has a positive impact on people with dementia so we’re very happy to have this here

in Selwyn,” she said. The programme will be available each school term on Thursday afternoons from 1.30pm to 2.30pm, starting on October 19 for term four. Ms Bouffandeau said the classes will interest those who are keen to relax, enjoy, share experiences and socialise while stimulating the mind through creative expression. “No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided.” For more information or to register, contact Bridget Carr on 03 347 3577 or 021 248 4315. ¢

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

The competitions held around New Zealand to coincide with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Finals, will get underway in February. However, due to popularity of the competitions, organisers are warning teams to get their entries in now. NZ Young Farmers competitions coordinator David Highsted said since AgriKidsNZ began in 2005 and TeenAg began in 2009 the competition has gone from strength to strength. “The last contest season culminated in record entries and we have now expanded the number of teams competing to adjust to the growth.” Mr Highsted said TeenAg numbers competing increased by 27% last year alone, and AgriKidsNZ by 6%.

He said the competitions were designed to be a fun competitive way to introduce urban and rural schools and families to agriculture, the contests have become the highlight of many students’ year. “These students are becoming champions of our industry and are sharing the fantastic experiences they have through the contest. “It is a great public relations exercise and a vital part of NZ Young Farmers’ ongoing emphasis of educating our youth about the vast and exciting opportunities within the primary sector.” Entries are now open online at: www.agrikidsnz.co.nz and www.teenag. co.nz. ¢

School road safety coordinator Stephanie Hautler, said it was important for everyone to just slow down. “I don’t know if drivers are not aware of the law or if it’s because we’re all in a hurry, but these are potentially your children, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren,” she said. ¢

The awards, which aim to promote environmental sustainability in Selwyn businesses, will be handed out at a ceremony on November 3. Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) project manager Dave Fitzjohn said the businesses which have taken part this year are to be thanked for their efforts in completing a new assessment process, and for their commitment to sustainability and community involvement. “The assessors who have been visiting businesses throughout Selwyn have been very impressed with the huge number of initiatives that businesses are instituting to lessen their impact on the environment and to help build and maintain community ties.” Mr Fitzjohn said all participants have been clearly building on their practices in these respects, but a few notable examples were: an accident repair company which has started using water based paint instead of previous more toxic varieties; cafes encouraging the change to reusable carry-away mugs; a local school building a greenhouse out of discarded plastic bottles, and many enterprises encouraging their employees to get out to the Port Hills to replant them with native plants. “Over the last two years some amazing long-term initiatives have come about as a result of Lincoln Envirotown and businesses combining in projects born out of discussions during this awards process.

Many Selwyn children in both rural areas and townships throughout the district taking the bus to school, the ‘20K Either Way’ school bus campaign is under way to raise awareness of safe driving around school buses collecting or dropping off children. Tony Rabbidge, managing director of Torlesse Travel Ltd, which operates school buses in Selwyn said bus companies are always aware of safety when buses are stopped, but it’s up to everyone driving on the road to ensure our children are safe. “Our drivers do not open the door until they can see the road is clear on country roads,” Mr Rabbidge said. “However, this does not work so well on the busy highways. I drive a bus every day myself and have felt frustrated with speeding vehicles passing us.” Recent reports suggest many drivers are ignoring the 20km speed limit, with some not making any attempt to slow down at all. Drivers in a hurry who speed around a stationary school bus are a serious danger to school children getting on and off. The law in New Zealand is for drivers to drive at 20km per

MIND YOUR SPEED AROUND SCHOOL BUSES

New arts leaders wanted u by Rachael Inch, Selwyn Creative Network

When I arrived in Selwyn as a young, vibrant and naïve ‘townie’, I struggled to adapt and I felt isolated. So I picked up a brush and started painting. It gave me a great sense of wellbeing, I joined the local arts council and become an advocate for the arts, especially for young people like me. In my work helping others, I often think about the types of resources younger artists need in rural communities. For the most part, this means developing ways to help them find funding, sell their work, or learn new skills. I have often asked myself: What kind of unique resources might motivate young artists to create art in the first place, be connected to their community and stick around to provide the strong, innovative leadership that small towns need? In other words, what are the conditions of creativity and talent development in a small town, and how does this affect a young person’s decision to stay in Selwyn? I attended Darfield Artweek recently. This has been running for 36 years and is organised by volunteers, many I met when I moved here. This year had a special meaning to me, because I was

attending as a sponsor to give back to the community. Artweek attracts entries from a diverse range of creatives. It’s a true example of community connection at its best. This year there were 14 awards, with two being awarded to artists under 20 years old. It’s important to recognise that this exhibition has been successful because of the trust and connection from our older generation. I noticed that there was the same core of dedicated volunteers running the exhibition, and I asked myself who will keep this going in the future if there are no new volunteers? When we think of resources for the arts, we don’t always think about creating context for talent development. It’s my hope for the future that exhibitions like this continue, especially for our young creative people. To make this possible we need to encourage people to get involved and lend a hand. I’m committing time to my community and hope that you can join me in doing so too. ¢

Cricket season underway Leeston-Southbridge has picked up its first win in the CRV Ambreed Country premier one day cricket competition with victory over Selwyn rivals Weedons. Round one of the competition was washed out but play eventually got underway on Saturday with defending champion’s Sefton along with Leeston-Southbridge, Southbrook and competition newcomers Cheviot recording wins. At Leeston, Weedons batted first on what was described as a ‘slow, tennis ball bouncy’ pitch. After some early pressure, the visitors folded for 106 in 37 overs. No batsman made it past 16 and extras top-scored with 19. Dougald Munro’s medium pace tore through the Weedon’s side, snaring four wickets. In response, Leeston-Southbridge approached the chase sensibly, with Canterbury Country opening bat Toby Doyle guiding the combined side home with eight wickets in hand with an unbeaten 42. At Sefton Domain the visitors p Toby Doyle plays forward to a delivery on his way again struggled. Show attracts record numbers “It is a big event for the whole of the Selwyn district and the good thing is that it still retains the intimate feel of a family show.” While show entries for many of the stock categories were down Mr Michael said that has been balanced with new events on the programme. “It is not like the old days when farmers bought along their stock to find a buyer as now a lot of that is being done online. “We still want to look after the traditions of the show as the people who keep coming back to the show still look for that nostalgia as it may have been where they had their first kiss on the ferris wheel or where they got engaged. “But we have also got to make sure we look after the wider community and show them the show is not just about an exclusive group of landed gentry walking around the ring in their moleskins — it is about the whole community coming together. At the end of the day it costs a huge amount of money to run these

events, so we can’t just rely on traditions and need to put on an entertaining day to draw the crowds, which in turn keeps the sponsors and trade exhibitors happy.” He said some of the new events like the Selwyn’s Got Talent completion, extending the Top Teams Sports Challenge to include schools from outside Ellesmere, and providing entertainment like country singing star Jody Direen widens the appeal of the show. Mr Michael said he has enjoyed his year as show president as he relishes the challenge. “It was a walk in the park compared to running a business and in part that is due to the awesome committee that is really passionate and a lot of people from the local community who get involved, and I need to thank them for that.” The highlight of the show for him was riding an old traction engine for the Grand Parade. ¢

Should I stay or go? ADVERTORIAL

It’s rodeo time again Labour Weekend rodeos get underway this Saturday with Winchester Rodeo bucking out of the shoots at 8am, followed by Methven on Sunday. The two events are expecting competitors from as far North as Kaitaia as they compete for prestigious season titles with the two rodeos being the first of the summer season. The Methven Rodeo is now one of the largest in New Zealand with crowd attendance in excess of 6000 people annually. During the lunch break, Methven are holding an inter-schools barrel race with the winning team taking home over $200 sports equipment for their school. The clubs wanted to create more than just a rodeo so it was a day out for the whole family and an event which supported both communities. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $20 per adult with children under 16 $10 and under 5 are free. Family concessions are also available. Bring your cowboy hat and the kids along for an action packed fun filled day. Rodeo Events

Bareback

The rider attempts to stay on the back of his horse using only his balance and a suitcase type handhold, known as a rigging, which is placed on top of the horse’s withers then secured with a cinch.

Barrel Racing

Barrel Racing is a female only event. The objective of a Barrel Racing run is to ride a

cloverleaf pattern around three barrels as quickly as possible. The time starts when the barrel racer crosses electronic timers on her horse. She then heads for the first barrel and makes a sharp turn around it.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Bull Riding

Bull Riding is usually the last event to be held at a rodeo, and is the most dangerous. Just like bareback and saddle Bronc riding the rider can only hold onto the animal with one hand, touching it with his free arm will get him disqualified. The rider holds onto a flat braided rope with one gloved hand, this rope is known as a bull rope, it is wrapped around the bull’s chest just behind the bulls front legs.

Saddle Bronco

The event that started rodeo, it originated from the necessary job of breaking in and training horses to be used in ranches, in the days of the Wild West.

Steer Wrestling

Steer Wrestling, or ‘bulldogging’ as it is sometimes known, has the basic objective for the steer wrestler to use his technique and strength to wrestle the steer to the ground, in the

fastest time possible. Like with rope & tie and team ropers, the steer wrestler starts the event on the back of his horse in the timed event box. Team Roping Team Roping is the only team event in rodeo. There are two ropers, one known as the header and the other is the heeler. The ropers start the event on the back of their horses in the timed event box.

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Spring time pet checks at home by Yolande B. Howell BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Spring is a busy time of year for everyone including our pets because as we are spending more time outdoors, so are they. Our pets are meeting and greeting other animals more frequently so the likelihood of disease spread is higher. Ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations. Potential hazards to pets during spring and summer time may also include:

Heat

Pets die in hot cars. It only takes 10 minutes and the temperature inside your car can double. Hot surfaces such as concrete, tarmac or even hot sand can burn your pet’s feet so best to be avoided. Exposure to the sun can cause heat exhaustion, this can be prevented by making sure your pets have some shade and shelter and plenty of fresh water available.

Insects

We are starting to see more bees, flies and spiders with the warmer weather. Bees do sting animals if bothered, so if you see your pet chasing bees, try and distract them and take your pet away. If they do get stung, take them to see your vet.

Other creepy crawlies such as spiders and flies can bite pets, so check your pet every day for any swelling, lumps or bumps.

Plants

Toxic flowers such as lilies and foxgloves start to blossom in spring. There are a huge number of plants which can be toxic to pets when ingested, and the internet is a good place to start learning about them. Grass seeds are plentiful also, and they can penetrate under the skin or get lodged in the ear canals. If your pet is showing any signs of discomfort, make sure to take them to your vet for a thorough examination.

External parasites

It is that time of year when fleas are rife. Prevention is always better than cure. There is a wide range of products and they all work a little differently so ask your vet for the best flea preventative for your pets.

Fleas are best prevented before your pet brings them inside your house because they are there to stay. Ticks are also another external parasite we should check our pets for. If you suspect or see a tick on your pet let your vet know as soon as possible.

Internal parasites

Worms are always a threat but more so during warmer weather. Treat according to your vet’s recommendation.

All-IN-ONE LIME-BASED FERTILISER
 FOR HEALTHY HORSE PASTURES

For healthy horse pasture

Poisons

Please keep your pets away from weed killers, snail and slug baits, ant baits and rat poison. Do not allow your pet to eat fertilisers or composts, they can also make them very ill. For people with hay fever, they may suffer more during spring, and pets who suffer with allergies may be worse this time of year also. I recommend checking your pets at home daily. Many of these checks can be done while giving your pet cuddles at the end of the your busy day. Enjoy the outdoors.

Dental care for dogs and cats u by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Vet Centre

You may be surprised to find out that dental and gum disease is the most common health problem in dogs and cats. Most pets develop dental and gum disease by the age of three years, so you can imagine how bad our teeth would get if we didn’t brush our teeth for three or more years. Routine dental care for cats and dogs can be simple, straightforward and will benefit your pet’s oral and overall health. Signs of dental disease may include bad breath, yellow or brown deposits on the teeth, loss of appetite, discomfort around the mouth, bleeding gums, loose teeth, difficulty chewing or pawing at the mouth or face. So, how does dental disease start? Teeth and gum disease starts when a film of bacteria known as plaque coats the tooth. Plaque hardens into tartar which can be seen as a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar irritates the gums and also creates an environment where bacteria thrive. As the disease gets worse the gums become tender, red and swollen. The gums eventually start pulling away from the teeth creating pockets that trap more bacteria and bits of food. As the gums recede, they may bleed and as the tooth root becomes exposed teeth may also become loose. Your pet will very likely feel pain or discomfort when eating. The bacteria will eventually enter the bloodstream and they can create health problems and affect vital organs. What can we do about this?

Oi! DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Pets, just like people, require routine dental care from you and your vet. Regular checkups with your vet will help monitor your pet’s dental health, however if you suspect a problem don’t hesitate to contact your vet. After a vet check, your vet may recommend a dental procedure to clean your pet’s teeth and to treat any dental or gum disease. Unlike people cats and dogs will not sit in a chair and open their mouths for us to do these procedures — they will require general anaesthesia. Anaesthesia also allows for tooth extractions and pain medications are used in these circumstances. Prevention is definitely better than cure and there are several methods to help keep your pet’s teeth and gums clean and healthy. There are a variety of plaque reducing foods, treats, chews and toys. Every animal is different, consult your vet on which combination of preventatives would suit your pet best. There is no substitute for regular brushing, which is why we do it ourselves to keep our teeth clean. Start early, pets can start having their teeth brushed at home — the younger they are the more likely you’ll succeed. Start slowly and gently, like all kinds of training that is reinforced with rewards and praise. There are specially designed pet toothbrushes and finger brushes, or use

Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming

le c y h t s a e n f i l ge A by Ann Morgan

After more than 30 years of living in the city of Christchurch, the Hira family made the decision to move to a lifestyle block in the Tai Tapu area after the earthquakes.

P

eter had grown up in the country and the family decided to return to the country for his retirement years and provide a setting that the whole family could live in and be together on the one property. The family are still involved in many community activities including the church Peter and his wife Vera started many years ago, now called Christchurch Worship Centre. “Lots has happened since we moved and on this property we have the ability to provide more for the community,”

says Steve. The property came with an established vegetable garden which they have enjoyed replanting and extending. Steve and his wife Sarah received advice from the previous owner and produced six paddocks of hay as extra feed for when they purchased their first lot of sheep. “We eat our home grown produce now and our youngest son Kaci can’t believe he has grown strawberries, corn and peas. He is loving the experience and it has been a great lesson in life for our three children. Now they understand

Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming that things don’t actually come from ‘the shop’ and we can now give away fruit and vegetables, eggs, meat and firewood to help others in need. “I had a lack of knowledge so I joined our local vet practice workshops to learn about animal care and how to correct issues we may be having such as worming sheep.” Steve says as a family they enjoy learning together. “The children just had a deck to play on in the city and they were restricted. Now have more room to make things and turn branches into taiaha and get the help with the animals. There is a lot of freedom to do things without the hassles of town. “Living in the country doesn’t limit us with sport and extra activities, we just drive a bit further and you are more organised and think twice before whipping out to the shops.” Sarah says the local community have been very helpful with their move. “We can call anyone for help with what to do when we are stuck. Even the lady we got the chickens from has guided me through the steps,” says Sarah. “We have had to learn along the way. Steve was filling the swimming pool and forgot to turn the tap off and it ran overnight and burnt out the pump. It was an expensive mistake. “We had to reinforce our fencing for the sheep. For a place like this you need

the right equipment to have things work in your favour. “One of the biggest changes we have seen is the children sleep well at night as they are running around constantly. In the city they lived on their electronic devices and went to the movies. Now when we go to see what they are doing it is usually building a hut, climbing a tree or playing with the chickens and we have more quality time working on the property.” Sarah’s mum Pam lives with them as well as Steve’s sister Angela and their dad Peter. They each have their own space and Pam has been tending to the rose garden and learning about trees. “She is loving it. We have an orchard and are expanding it. The move from the city has been life changing. We are way less stressed, which you don’t realise until you change lifestyle.” Peter says living back in the country is fantastic and it is great for the grandchildren. “We have the a range of animals for them to interact with and of course they get to drive their buggy around and are able to be involved in farming activities they wouldn’t get to do otherwise. “We would highly recommend others do the shift — it is a great option. We are all about whanau and it is one place we can all live together in a more natural and relaxed environment away from the hustle and bustle of town.”
