David and Leitha Adams grow daffodils on their five-acre property near Yaldhurst, but their connections with the Malvern district of Selwyn run deep. Mr Adams, a now-retired teacher, was raised in Sheffield and can trace his roots back to one of the first farming families in Malvern. “My great-grandfather Thomas W Adams was the first farmer in Greendale,

with crops and later a tree nursery,” Mr Adams said. “He had eight sons including my grandfather who moved to Sheffield.” It was through his father, Les Adams, that he acquired his love of daffodils. “When I was growing up there was a group of around a dozen keen daffodil exhibitors including my father, along with Graeme Innes and Les Hawke, who were

Visitors 249,999 and 250,000 were Jian Zhu, 22, and Erin Jin, 21, from Wellington. Zhu said he and Jin wanted to learn more about the Canterbury earthquakes after they saw the empty spaces around the central city. The pair had an earthquake experience of their own when the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake rocked Wellington. Quake City opened in Cashel Street as part of the Re:START container mall on February 15 2013. It aimed to meet demand from businesses and community groups for an attraction — which told the story of the Canterbury ear thquakes and would help bring locals and tourists back to the central city.

More than 50,000 people visited Quake City in its first year, and when the Cashel Street site closed for relocation in June 2017 — more than 190,000 visitors had been through. The exhibition’s popularity has continued since it opened at its new site on the corner of Durham Street North and Armagh Street; almost 60,000 people have visited since it opened there in September 2017. Most Quake City visitors are now from overseas, but the exhibition is also popular with locals. In the last year, admission charges have been waived for a weekend twice so that local people can visit for free. During the most recent free weekend in August, 1,850 people came through. ¢

A 30-year army veteran is now the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2/1 Battalion stationed at Burnham Military Camp, and for Warrant Officer Class One, Wayne Nepia, it is something of a return home. Although born and educated in Waiuku just south of Auckland, Wayne Nepia says he has a special affinity with Burnham and the Selwyn district. Between numerous overseas deployments, he has served at Burnham several times — first as a private soldier through to warrant officer and now as a regimental sergeant major. It is not just the army life that draws him to the district. It is his staunch involvement and support for local rugby. “I have been involved in rugby coaching with Burnham Rugby Club from 2009 to 2013 and coached senior rugby at Burnham Dunsandel Irwell when the clubs merged. “An overseas deployment put a temporary stop to that — but now that I am back, I intend to resume coaching next season,” he said. Overseas postings have played a big part in Wayne’s life. He has served with distinction in Cyprus, Afghanistan, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and East Timor. His decorations include the NZ Operational Service Medal, the East Timor Service Medal, the United Nations Medal East Timor and in 2002 the Long

Service Good Conduct Medal. Over the years, he has served in the battalion as section commander, platoon sergeant, quartermaster sergeant and company sergeant major. In December 2009, Wayne achieved the rank of warrant officer class two and in December 2014 was promoted to warrant officer class one. ¢

The students, along with others from around the country, took part in the day to call attention to the silencing effect of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, name-calling and harassment. Writing in the Darfield High School Dispatch magazine, Natasha Young, said the day was about letting students who experience such bullying know that they are not alone, and to ask schools to take action to address the problem. “The vow of silence is a challenge — but very rewarding,” she said “In total, we had nine students from years’ 11 and 13 getting

involved by taking a vow of silence for a portion or a full day. As well other students got involved in other ways such as our selfie for silence, to show our support and to let others know what we are doing to break the silence around homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. “Nobody should be silenced because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and everyone should feel safe at school. By bringing visibility to this issue, we can make it better.” Natasha Young is encouraging more students to give it a go next year to help break the silence around the issue.

effort needed to deliver their vision for Te Waihora. “We are delighted that the minister has agreed to this important step,” the co-chairs said. “It is a logical and timely move — because the department is deeply involved in activities in and around the lake. “It is a significant lake margin landholder and already has a joint management plan with Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, and is involved in the Living Water partnership with Fonterra. “It is also the agency responsible for inanga/whitebait — one of the iconic species to be found in Te Waihora.” Ms Sage said she was pleased the Department of Conservation, Te Papa Atawhai, had joined the cogovernance group. “DOC is a significant land manager around the lake, and I am pleased the department’s partnership work will now be formally recognised by being part of the co-governance relationship for the benefit of the lake.” The co-chairs said the commitment from the Department of Conservation would enhance integrated management across the catchment. ¢

Building WOF amnesty begins

The Selwyn District Council has begun a 12-month building warrant of fitness amnesty to encourage commercial building owners to review their compliance schedules before their building’s annual warrant of fitness is due. Under the Building Act 2004, owners of commercial, industrial, retail and community buildings have a responsibility to ensure their building is safe for people to enter, occupy or work in. It means all systems must have regular checks to ensure they operate properly for the life of the building. Council building manager, Vanessa Mitchell, said the amnesty was an opportunity for building owners to declare new or altered systems — such as fire alarms, smoke detectors or automatic doors and windows — so that council can work with them to add the systems to their compliance schedules. “We’ve had significant growth in the commercial sector in the district and council has reached a point where regular audits will be carried out to ensure the existing building stock is being maintained,” Mrs Mitchell said. “The amnesty is part of our customer focussed approach to actively engage with local building owners and build strong working relationships. “We want to make it easier for them to keep their compliance schedules up to date and with minimal stress.” An annual building warrant of fitness

The foundation is looking for someone who can assist with managing volunteers and coordinating people in Leeston for the annual Pink Ribbon Appeal on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13. “The Pink Ribbon Appeal funds a large chunk of our work, so there’s a direct link between the time people give on the street and our ability to fund research, support and education programmes,” Evangelia Henderson, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, said. “An area coordinator will manage a small team of volunteers, receive and distribute stock to volunteers,

oversee the appeal sites in Leeston on the appeal days and bank the donated funds. “We will provide ever ything you’ll need, including a detailed brief beforehand.” During the appeal, volunteers across New Zealand will raise money at more than 1,000 collection points. Their efforts will fund research into new treatments, support for women going through breast cancer and lifesaving awareness and education programmes. Daffodil homecoming for Darfield “Dad bought me some daffodils when I was eight or nine, and I had my own patch until I moved into town (Christchurch).” After training as a teacher, he married Leitha and focussed on his career, specialising in deaf education. After about five years into the marriage, the pair attended a flower show in Christchurch, and his passion for daffodils was reignited. “I planted some daffodils at home and took them to the following year’s flower show, entered them into the novice section and won. The prize included a collection of bulbs and we sort of turned our whole section into a daffodil garden.” In 1989 they moved to a five acre section on Pound Road near Yaldhurst and along with a friend started Templeton Daffodils. Mr Adams became a member of the Canterbury Horticultural Society (CHS) and the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand and is now a life member of both organisations. It was through the national society he discovered another connection to the Malvern area in which he grew up. “In the National Daffodil Society we compete for the Avery Cup, which was donated by the Reverend Avery who I

discovered was the father of Dr Avery who was the doctor for the Malvern district based in Darfield when I was growing up. “I suspect when Dr Avery came to Darfield he bought the hobby with him and introduced it to the local people. “So there’s a sense that by taking this national daffodil show to Darfield it is about bringing it home.”

A Highland Games Heavy Events training day was held at the Hororata Domain on Saturday with a special training session for younger competitors being held alongside that of the more experienced competitors. The sessions were run by New Zealand’s most awarded heavy event athlete, Pat Hellier. Event Manager, Cindy Driscoll, said they had 12 competitive athletes take part. “Four of these were new people who will now all compete in the Gough CAT

Championship, and for the first time we had equal men and women attend the training day,” she said. “The junior and teen session went really well with kids getting one-onone training from the top athletes in the country. “The Hororata Keas had their camp at the domain on the weekend, and they came down to join us as well.” Entries are now open for the eighth annual Hororata Highland Games, which

The highlight of the term for many of the students was a visit from the 2018 New Zealand Invictus Games team. This year’s Invictus Games will be held in Sydney next month. The Invictus Games is an international multi-sport

event, created by Prince Harry, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and indoor rowing.

The games are named after Invictus — which is Latin for ‘unconquered’ or ‘undefeated’. The New Zealand games athletes and support staff from the New Zealand Defence Force visited Rolleston College and were welcomed on to the school grounds with a haka. Year 10 student, Emily Taylor, said

speaking to some of these athletes really inspired her. “The fact that they can go through losing a limb, or suffering the loss of a friend, and keep going, let alone make a national multi-sports team, is just amazing to me, and tells me that if they can do it, well what’s stopping me?” ¢

New signage at Foster Park Finding your way around Rolleston’s ever-expanding Foster Park has got a little easier with the installation of new signage.

The Selwyn District Council has almost completed the installation of wayfinding signage at the park. Council’s land development project manager, Phillip Millar, said the signage would make finding sports grounds and facilities much easier for not only new visitors to the park, but for regular users who find themselves in an area of the park which they’re not familiar with

“Foster Park has 27 fields, a hockey turf, a playground as well as a softball and baseball diamond, which covers an area of about 30 hectares,” Mr Millar said. “Visitors and users of the park are regularly asking for direction to a certain field or facility. These wayfinders are a user-friendly tool for people to refer to and to get to their destination with no fuss.” ¢

As the winter sports season ends and summer competitions get underway one of Selwyn’s fastest growing clubs reflects on a successful winter and looks forward to new beginnings this summer. The Selwyn Athletic Club marked the end of the winter with a number of athletes competing successfully in cross country and race walk events, with three runners being named in the Canterbury primary and intermediate inter-regional cross country team. Kobi Maslin, Cooper Wightman and Daniel Prescott, who are coached by Lincoln High school student, George McNaughton, were all named in the team. The club is now looking forward to the start of the summer season, and this Sunday will hold a registration day at the club’s home ground at Brookside Park in Rolleston. SAC committee member, Sarsha Wightman, said they are really looking forward to this season. “Christchurch’s new athletics facility, Nga Puna Wai, is on track to open in time for the season start next month.” It will be the first time since the Canterbury earthquakes that local athletes will have the opportunity to perform on an international standard all-weather track since QEII Park was destroyed in the quakes. The station wagon — or the estate car, if you’re to use the Euro-zone nomenclature — is officially an endangered species. The mid-sized and mini SUV has entered the market like a shoal of deadly piranhas introduced into a koi pond, and the body shape we remember from many a summer holiday may soon go the way of the traditional sedan-at-the-front, tradie-at-the-back Aussie ute. In such a market, similar shapes proliferate by a process of convergent evolution. Wind tunnels pare down drag coefficients. Interior space demands cut into the free will of exterior designers. As usual, concept cars, which roll out at the world’s auto shows with 40-inch rims and more chrome than a 1950s American diner’s cutlery drawer are toned down into the beige end of the spectrum by the accountants. Which brings us neatly to something different — the SsangYong Tivoli. A small SUV, which uses its point of difference to a huge advantage. Since it’s not made by one of the old-established names we have known since the 1980s, it dares to be different in its styling, presenting something which other road users will actually look at. Yes, it gets a frugal 6.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, and yes, it can fit a whole lot of people and gear inside with its artful layout. However, first and foremost, it’s strikingly wellsculpted. Able to be optioned with more customisation than most vehicles in its class. Fancy this pretty and practical little sports utility in white with a red interior? How about fire engine red with a carbon black roof? In a sea of

the ordinary, the Tivoli swims against the current. Moreover, that appeals to those who buy with their heart instead of their head. A smart move indeed for a company which plugs in the right metrics to convince cold and calculating buyers as well. Here are two — a price

under $26k and a five-year factory warranty. Combine it all, and you have an attractive package. Because while there are some who want a car as an appliance to shuttle them from A to B,

most of us want something pretty and fun. A tiny new Mini or new Fiat 500 may be a touch too small. However, this — could be just the ticket. ¢
