A new campaign rolled out by Crimestoppers aims to encourage rural people to speak up about suspicious or criminal activity. Established in New Zealand in 2009, Crimestoppers is an independent charity providing a system for people to pass on information anonymously, either through a free telephone number or a secure online form. The service is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The ‘Shut the gate on rural crime’ campaign is the first of its kind to be launched by Crimestoppers with a rural focus. Crimestoppers chief executive officer Jude Mannion said the campaign is to let rural people know they can play a valuable role in crime prevention by telling Crimestoppers what they know. “Ever y piece of information they give to us helps fill in the bigger intelligence picture.” Ms Mannion said Crimestoppers receives nearly 50 calls a day from all around New Zealand.

When information has been received, a report is created and call-takers ensure there is nothing that identifies the caller. Useful information is passed onto the relevant authorities, making sure the caller’s identity cannot be discovered. “The police tell us they find one in four of the reports we give them as actionable,” said Ms Mannion. Crimestoppers’ promise of anonymity has never been broken.
New Zealand rural insurer FMG and New Zealand Post are supporting the campaign. “They do things differently at FMG which is what makes their involvement with this initiative a really good fit,” said Ms Mannion. “FMG wants to get people thinking about prevention. “They want to act as the fence at the top of the hill, rather the ambulance at the bottom of it. “We want to encourage the same thoughts — so it really is a great partnership and we’re proud, that as New Zealand’s leading rural insurer they’re on board.” Rural households recently received promotional material in the form of ‘Shut the gate on rural crime’ stickers with Crimestopper’s freephone number 0800 555 111 and website www.crimestoppersnz.org printed on them. “Put them on the letterbox, kitchen window, barn doors, anywhere,” said Ms Mannion.

Tomorrow’s Farms Today “The aim is to look at the possible level of farm profitability while minimising the impact on the environment.” Farmers in the study group have undergone total farm business and environmental assessments. Fully-funded twice-yearly visits are made to the farmers during the three-year periods. Business records are collated by farm business analysis software, Red Sky, and physical farm data and nutrient management information is also gathered. Group workshops and field days are also held on some of the farms involved.

Information collected from the farms will assist the group to understand any modifications required on their own farm and also help farmers in the wider community to design farming operations keeping the future in mind. The central plateau project began in July 2011 and the Upper Waipa scheme followed 12 months later. Tomorrow’s Farms Today is funded by Ministry for Primary Industries Sustainable Farming Fund, DairyNZ, Red Sky, Headlands, and receives support from the Waikato Regional Council, VetPlus and River Iwi.

The success of the Tomorrow’s Farms Today project in the central plateau area of the Wa ikato River catchment, followed by a similar scheme in Upper Waipa, has set plans for more throughout the country. Tomorrow’s Farms Today, believed to be the first project of its kind in New Zealand, is about to enter the final stage for the group of 25 volunteer dairy farmers in the Waikato. The farming area involved covers land that feeds into part of the Waikato River considered a ‘high priority water body’ for the Waikato catchment. The project aims to determine what farming systems are the most
resilient while demonstrating the lowest environmental footprint. Headlands consultants, Alison Dewes and Jesse Bolt, have co-ordinated the Waikato projects. Dr Dewes initiated the scheme after concerns that dairy farmers were getting a bad rap regarding their environmental impact. She said many farmers are in fact doing a good job in their field.

It wasn’t until Sue Arthur was in the middle of a mid-life crisis that she took action and followed her dreams of owning her own business, Over the Moon Dairy Ltd. Since then, the business has won over 40 accolades for soft and hard cheeses made from cow, goat, sheep and even buffalo milk. “I’d just gotten divorced and don’t have kids so I was free to make my own choices about my future without any restrictions. It was scary but liberating. I’d always wanted to run my own business and thought, it’s now or never.” She had been thinking about Over the Moon Dairy for seven years and

Before, she had been working in local government as a consultant and left to pursue courses in cheese making in Australia, frustrated that there was nothing similar available in New Zealand. Seeing a gap in the market, she enlisted the help of the tutor, Neil Willman, to help her set up her factory and he has designed all their award winning cheeses.

Ken Breckon and his late brother Peter had limited equine experience when they bought their first racehorse in 1995. As joint partners of Hydroflow Distributors, the pair were looking for an interest to relieve work pressure. “Other than playing golf competitively against each other in the weekends, we thought it would be great to get into ownership of a horse to give us further socialising interests outside of work,” said Ken. “The final decision to do so was made when my late brother became very friendly with a customer of Hydroflow in Matamata who owned gallopers. “I decided it was possibly better for us to opt for the trotters because it would be a cheaper entrance into horse racing.” After reading a newspaper editorial by one of New Zealand’s most respected racing journalists, the late Leo George, mention was made of a standardbred filly named Megaera — considered to be a top prospect at the Karaka sales. Ken and Peter set off to bid for her. But it almost didn’t happen.

Lot 63 was in the sales ring when Ken and Peter arrived and they found Megaera was soon to follow as Lot 68. Peter bid first and Ken secured the sale with a final successful offer of $30,000.

Fortunately Ken and Peter struck up a friendship with professional agisters and vendors, Sandy and Jan Yarndley. The filly was agisted on the Yarndley’s property, Mark Purdon came on board as trainer and Tony Herlihy as regular pilot. Sired by Butler B G and out of Aberfeldy, Megaera made her racing debut as a twoyear-old at Alexandra Park. She went onto have a highly successful racing career with highlights including winning the PGG Sales Series Two-year-old Fillies Pace, the New
and Peter to buy more yearlings at further Karaka sales. The brothers also saw the opportunity to include Hydroflow Distributors with sponsorship and contribute back to the harness racing industry. When Sandy and Jan decided to wind down a little and spend more time with their family, Ken and his wife Karen were given the opportunity to purchase Yarndley Farms. “We saw buying the farm as a business opportunity to grow the Breckon Bloodstock brand on the back of the great success of the Yarndleys.” That was almost six years ago and since

After retiring to the broodmare paddock, Megaera’s first foal, Penthouse Pete, went onto have a successful racing career in New Zealand and win in the United States. Megaera also produced a good race filly, Dale Elinor, who was Group One placed. Ken and Peter soon became close friends with the Yarndley family. “As a sales representative with Hydroflow, my call cycle allowed me to call in and often stay overnight with Sandy and Jan,” said Ken. “They were instrumental in us starting a love affair with harness racing. “Not only with our first purchase of Megaera but giving us an in-depth understanding of both breeding and racing and the desire to get involved in the industry on a much larger scale.” The purchase of Megaera and the racing success that followed then allowed Ken

While every race win is a highlight for the couple, Ken said the 18 straight wins with champion trotter I Can Doosit probably topped the lot. The couple are also very proud of the Rowe Cup win in 2011 with I Can Doosit.

“Karen and I were overseas and my two sons and my parents represented us at Alexandra Park,” said Ken. “Both sons, aged nine and eleven at the time, confidently gave speeches at the track and in the winners’ lounge.” Ken and Karen aim to maintain Breckon Farms as a leading preparer of yearlings at the annual sales and as a renowned agistment breeding centre for standardbred horses. They will also endeavour to continue to breed top class racehorses with the Breckon Bloodstock brand. Plans are in place to develop the farm further as a show piece and possibly a tourist destination to grow the Breckon brand internationally.

n conversation with owner Anne Woodward, one realises the term describes the ethos of family that permeates her and husband Philip’s business, with three generations based in this Waikaretu valley sharing in several interconnected ventures. The multi-venture — ‘the dream’ as Anne calls it, started with the Woodward farm. Philip grew up down the road on a post-war rehabilitation block. After university he and his brothers went shearing, eventually buying the family farm plus a neighbour’s, and establishing the sheep stud Nikau Coopworth, further developed by eldest brother Clive and wife Sue. “As the brothers married they ran out of farm,” Anne says. “Clive and Sue stayed on the home block and when we got married we bought this farm with the cave, which Philip had explored as a boy.”

Fortunately they got the torch going again, and the cave remained a special place for many years, with the commercial tours not set up until 1994. “We did look at it earlier when youngest son Andrew was small — at the time we were in crisis. Interest rates were through the roof and the government was writing off farmer’s loans. We had a budget meeting with the banks and they said if our loan was written off we’d be worth minus $70,000, and if it wasn’t we’d be gone in a year.”

They didn’t take the write-off. “We managed somehow, and fortunately Philip still had the shearing.” Anne says commercialising the cave has turned out to be the best way to protect it. A kilometre long and threaded by a stream, the complex has been kept as close to its natural state as possible. “We’ve even resisted naming any of it — Philip’s always said it’s just too big.” The full tour takes a good hour and a half, and a crawling passage necessitates a reasonable level of fitness.
Catherine regularly assisting in their parents’ business and their siblings also roped in at various times. The five adult Woodward children have eight children under five years old between them, so a few babies get juggled round the family roster. “We mix and match,” Anne s ay s . “ W h o e v e r ’s around does whatever needs doing. Over the past few months we have been looking at how nutritional medicine can help various conditions. Unlike what are commercially defined as ‘fpa’ (fine particle application) in which all ingredients are finely ground regardless of benefit and cost, each individual ingredient in fluid fertilisers is present in a range of particle sizes to suit that nutrient. The main factors deciding the particle size range chosen for each nutrient are (a) whether it is possible and intended for some or all of that nutrient to be taken up through the leaves, as in a foliar fertiliser, and (b) what sizing will allow passage of the particular ingredient through the plant canopy to the soil, with as many individual particles as possible, with a totally even spread, to optimise nutrient uptake. ‘Liquid’ fertilisers got a deservedly bad name in New Zealand beginning in the 1980s, because of blatantly dishonest and misleading claims that the tiny amounts of nutrient being applied per hectare at the rates recommended by the seller would maintain production. Typically, these products were applying less than one kg/ha of the key nutrients, and trivial amounts of trace elements. They made huge profits for their suppliers, but cost farmers dearly. Several such companies added growth promotants and ‘greening’ agents to their products, to create an impressive but fleeting visual benefit.
Application systems Do you use a plane or helicopter on the farm?
This type of con has arisen again recently, but wrapped in a more sophisticated, single-invoice ‘package’ of on-farm ‘advice’ and application. Nutrient application rates remain massively below maintenance requirements. Unfortunately, this has distracted attention from the enormous benefits of true fluid fertilisers, as described above. Fluid fertilisers have all the advantages of solid fertilisers — relatively low cost products designed to maintain and improve soil fertility and plant growth — but avoid their disadvantages of dust, segregation of components during handling, transport and spreading, and entry of nutrients into waterways. In addition, fluid fertilisers offer a combination of important advantages — extremely accurate placement (thereby allowing deposition of nutients into waterways to be avoided), extremely even coverage of much smaller-sized particles than granules, optimising both leaf and root uptake, and the easy addition of both solid and liquid additives, additional nutrients, seed and insecticide. In particular, the additives can include cutting-edge products that greatly increase both P and N efficiency and reduce losses. For all these reasons, I believe that ‘fluids’ are the way to go. The water content is simply the carrier, the means to ensure that the nutrients and additives required to optimise productivity on each given farm can be applied in the most cost-effective manner, in any terrain, in any weather.

It is a story of onwards and upward but uncertainty underlies the log markets and while price gains are still being achieved, these are tentative and the bullrun may be running out of fizz. If there are further price increases from here, then be on guard as a more spectacular price collapse may follow. Chinese inventory is still high following their New Year break but matched with high demand, log inventory is steadily falling. The onset of the hot season may be the catalyst to reduce the Dragon’s appetite and when sentiment goes south so might the prices. But at the present time forest owners in New Zealand continue to ride the wave. Closer to home, sawmills have been forced to increase log prices to match, which will be tough for some, but this may increase sawmillers’ collective resolve to hold onto recent increases in sawn timber prices.
The result of the referendum will be interesting, as those organisations promoting the levy already own 80% of the forests but represent only 25% of the participants. The levy will be administered by a group to be formed called the ‘Forest Growers Levy Trust’ (FGLT). If the levy does come into effect, the first challenge for the FGLT will be to enforce and collect the levy. This is sure to be an expensive exercise and may consume a big chunk of the levy income. The other challenge will be to demonstrate the real benefits that
withdrawal from Kyoto changes the dynamic of this market and the sentiment is firmly buy and hold. The really big event in the woodlot owners’ calendar last month was the Forest Owners Referendum on whether a compulsory levy should be introduced of 27 cents per tonne or cubic metre for all forest products removed from a ‘qualifying’ forest. A qualifying forest is owned by a forest owner (or entity) with more than 4Ha of forest and harvests wood products from the forest. Wood products will mostly be logs, but also include binwood, residue and wood
chips. A ‘yes’ vote by more than 50% of forest owners will be the mandate for the Ministry of Primary Industries to legislate the levy under The Commodity Levies Act (1990) which enables an industry organisation to seek a compulsory levy on all producers of a commodity. Their are restrictions on how that money may be used and trading or commercial activities are excluded. To continue the levy beyond six years, another referendum is required.

Busy season for hoof trimmers We are getting closer to the end of the 2013 season. It has turned out to be a more challenging season for most of the country, but the milk price is looking better for next year. We, as hoof trimmers have been very busy this season. Some farmers report that they have had less lame cows this year and others are saying the opposite. It is interesting
though how many people keep on blaming the tracks and stones on yards for their lame cows. Others are beginning to see things more in perspective, now realising that laminitis is the cause of lameness and that physical stress aggravates the problem. It seems that the articles I have been writing are helping with that as well, as some of my friends don’t ask me anymore on how I am but ask how the laminitis is doing! Laminitis is the inflammation of the laminy which is basically an unhealthy live tissue inside the claw. This is mainly caused by diet but can also be triggered by mastitis, calving or some other stresses. So if laminitis is the underlying problem how can preventative hoof trimming help? With trimming you can’t make a hoof healthier so you can’t solve laminitis with hoof trimming. That is correct. No matter how well the hooves are shaped if you don’t feed the cow properly you can still end up with a major problem.
Prevent Mastitis?
Hoof trimming is not meant to solve the lameness issue, it is only a way to assist farmers minimise the effects of laminitis. Imagine a trailer that has two really old tyres on it. They are weathered by the sun and could burst at any time. Now you put a load on the trailer but you put that entire load on one side. The tyre on that side bears a greater load than the other tyre and is therefore more likely to burst. If you spread the load evenly over the trailer you would get a lot more distance out of the old tyres. They may still burst but it is less likely. Trimming cow’s feet properly has the same effect as spreading the load on your trailer. Making both claws carry 50% of the weight will be much better especially when a cow is affected by laminitis. The reality is that nearly every cow in NZ has laminitis to some degree. I don’t think that we can ever totally overcome that and we probably don’t have to. I believe that laminitis belongs to a (domestic) cow like fleas belong to a dog. It is not a problem as long as it is being kept under control.

Winning sharemilkers growing their equity

This year’s winners of the Waikato Sharemiker/ Equity Farmer of the Year award, Andrew and Michelle McPherson, both worked in the banking industry before embarking on a dairy farming career. It was while employed by The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) that Andrew and Michelle first met. Marriage followed in 1998, then a move to London for an OE to work in investment banking.
Two staff members are employed on the farm. Mike Pinny who is second-incharge, has worked on the farm for nearly three years. Farm assistant, Eze Borette from Argentina, began working there in February.
“While in London, we talked about going dairy farming when we returned to New Zealand, so had a goal to save NZ$100,000 while we were there,” said Michelle.
“Our strategy was to pay off our debt within the three-year contract and then move to a bigger 50 percent job, which is what we have done every three years” said Michelle. “When we arrived here June 2010, the farm was set up for split calving and high input,” said Michelle. “By the end of the first system, we had to undersow AR37 grasses into a lot of farm. “Most of the farm was AR1 and annual grasses 25 percent.” Andrew, Michelle and their three sons Callum (9), Liam (8) and Jacob (4) are

Andrew and Michelle enjoy the variety of chores involved with their sharemilking position, particularly being able to work outside and not stuck in an office all day.
Towards the end of 2001 they returned to New Zealand with their savings and a goal to progress to 50 percent sharemilking as soon as possible. Andrew took on a farm assistant position in Te Puke for several months before they moved to Te Awamutu. Their dairying career has since been based in that area as they steadily moved up the ladder, taking on their first 50 percent sharemilking contract with 220 cows in June 2004. Three years later they moved into a similar situation with 380 cows. They have been in their current position milking a herd of 500 Friesian cross cows, along with a handful of Jerseys, on a 140ha effective farm since June 2010.

“Our equity has grown 1000 percent in nine years which we wouldn’t get if we worked in town.” The couple agree that they both bring different strengths to the business. Andrew’s skills incorporate the operational side and Michelle has financial and human resources expertise.
The couple grew 12ha of maize for the first two years on the farm but now buy it in. Chicory is grown on between six to seven percent of the farm which is part of a regrassing policy.

After months of drought conditions, soil moisture levels are still in deficit, and rivers and streams are running at low levels. Although there’s been some welcome rainfall recently it hasn’t been enough to return soil moisture back to normal or replenish stock dams and groundwater supplies. This could all change by mid-autumn with a return of fronts moving across New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. Here are a few tips to prepare:
Pasture recovery Inspect the farm and decide whether it’s necessary to resow entire paddocks. Options available to revitalise the condition of pasture include planting a winter crop, undersowing or direct drilling, or a new pasture cover. Stock up on fertiliser so it’s ready to apply to pasture when significant rain does arrive. This will help increase pasture growth and aid in the recovery from drought conditions.
Prepare dams Shallow earth dams that have dried out during the drought may have affected the reliability of the wall. This could result in filling problems and any cracks along the length of the wall could cause slumping. Excavation work may be necessary to ensure dams are well maintained and the spillway is clear of debris before the rain arrives.
Clear drains With water flows at low levels, now could be an ideal time to clear farm drains. Free-flowing drainage with a fast centre flow reduces the build-up of sediment, weed growth, and alleviates problems with high water tables. Fencing to keep stock out of drains helps to reduce erosion. Planting banks with small species creates a filter for sediment and nutrients. Transporter + Truck & Trailers available for bulk delivery
Soil High stock levels and prolonged rainfall leave soils at risk of pugging and soil compaction. This will be a huge setback for pasture recovery. If possible try to build pasture cover before winter and graze wetter paddocks earlier in the season. Graze paddocks prone to pugging with lighter stock.
Winter crops Crops have had a difficult start with little or no rainfall during the drought. While moisture is essential for plant Servicing commercial, rural, and residential customers within the greater Waikato area.
Monitor your crops, tackle the problem and get these pests under control at an early stage. Insect removal should assist in both the quantity and quality of the final winter crop yield.

Not just words associated with your winter wild pork roast What you don’t know about your rural water supply. When you hear the words Bore (boar), Table and Rain you could be forgiven for envisaging illusions of a delicious wild pork roast dinner on a rural winter’s day. However, these three words can be more commonly associated with what you drink than with what you eat. In rural New Zealand the three most common rural water supplies used are bore, table and rain water. This article will look at these supplies and some of the issues that may be associated with them. It is a common mistake for people to confuse bore water for table water. Table water is water which generally lies not far below the surface of the ground, and is accessed via an open concrete lined well or a shallow cased pipe dug or drilled only a few metres into the ground. Table water generally cannot supply a high demand and can fluctuate in its supply between the months of winter and summer. For this reason table supplies are more common place in dwelling situations rather than industry, horticulture and farming where water demands are generally higher. On the other hand bore waters are capable of supplying the demands required. Bores are generally deep water sources where an under-ground stream of water or aquifer has been penetrated. Bores are drilled and cased via drilling rigs and can vary in depth from tens of metres to many hundreds.

However, on the other hand it has its own unique differences. Although rain-water is quite often chemically alright, it does lean towards being acidic or having a low pH. Rain water can also be highly susceptible to contamination by multiple sources, such as windblown contaminants (sediments and dust), faecal matters (birds and rodents) dead animals and chemical residues. These can lead to pathogenic bacteria risks which can easily contaminate the water supply. To ensure safe potable drinking water best practice is to find the best treatment solution for your requirements.

It’s been a tough time feeding livestock during the drought. And now with winter fast approaching, consideration needs to be given to keeping them in good condition during the colder months.
Vetade Has the lack of green feed depleted the vitamin levels in your stock? During a drought, when stock have limited access to green feed, vitamins A and E are the most common vitamin deciencies to develop. Maintaining adequate levels of these vitamins is important for growth and regeneration of tissues and to maintain a healthy immune system so stock are better able to cope with what mother nature throws at them.

Here are a few tips to help:
Feed If possible ensure there is plenty of supplementary feed on hand as winter approaches. Also consider destocking any surplus animals or wintering stock off the farm. Slow down grazing rotations as grass growth reduces. A good supply of supplementary feed will help fill the gaps.
Shelter Stock that are continually exposed to wet and cold weather become susceptible to health-related problems and condition loss as they struggle to maintain body heat. Shelter, either in the form of a lean-to shed or a stand of evergreen trees, plays an important role in helping to keep livestock in good condition. And don’t forget your canine workmates also need a dry, warm kennel and run to keep healthy, happy, and able to perform their job.
Vaccinations and vet checks Autumn is an ideal time to ensure livestock and other animals on the property are up-to-date with vaccinations, any added trace minerals required and other health-related checks. The warmer, moist weather tends to see an increase

When Sandra Pedersen left the Waikato 15 years ago she didn’t expect to be a lifestyle block owner or selling nest boxes.
