River cleanup funding The Waikato River Authority has announced its 4th funding round of river clean-up projects will open on July 1, this year with a closing date of August 29. Waikato River Authority co-chairs Tukoroirangi Morgan and Hon John Luxton say the authority believes it is timely to set tighter priorities for cleanup projects. “We’ve been pleased to support a wide range of projects in our first three years of funding but we now wish to become more focussed and provide more direction to funding applicants.” In past years there has had between $6 million and $7 million available for Waikato River clean-up projects. It is expected that a similar amount will again be available. Previous funding rounds have resulted in a total allocation of $16 million across 110 projects. Many of these have been completed or are multi-year projects. The authority is a co-governance body established between the Crown and Waikato River iwi to restore and protect the Waikato River. The responsibility covers a catchment area of 11,000 square kilometres for New Zealand’s Transporter + Truck & Trailers available for bulk delivery

longest river. Over the next 26 years the authority will administer $250 million to support the achievement of its purpose. The authority believes a co-ordinated effort will see a much more optimistic outcome for the river. The Waikato river is Tainui’s tupuna. They state, ‘our relationship with the river and our respect for it lies at the heart of our spiritual and physical wellbeing, and our tribal identity and culture. The river is the physical embodiment of the mana and mauri of the tribe.’ Mana whakahaere embodies the authority that Waikato-Tainui and other River tribes have established in respect of the Waikato River over many generations, to exercise control, access to and management of the Waikato River and its resources in accordance with tikanga (values, ethics and norms of conduct). Information on funding process is available on www.waikatoriver.org.nz/ funding.

“An enjoyable and rewarding process” is how James and Melissa Barbour describe the lead up to their major win at this year’s Waikato Dairy Industry Awards.

he couple won the 2014 Waikato Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year title at the region’s dairy industry awards and go head to head with 10 other regional winners at the 25th anniversary of the national competition in May. James and Melissa, both 28, have been working in the dairy industry for seven seasons and are now in their third position 50% sharemilking. They are currently milking 355 cows for Joan De Renzy at Hinuera near Matamata, and their intention is to progress to a larger sharemilking position and eventually farm ownership by 2020. It was their first time entering the awards but it has always been a goal, given the right circumstances. Now into their second season on the farm, they say having a supportive farm owner

played a huge part in their decision to enter this year. “We’d were always planned to enter the awards and we’re stoked with the result,” says James. “A couple of months ago, when we entered we didn’t expect to end up winning, so it was a

nice surprise and it’s something we would definitely recommend to others. “We probably averaged a couple of hours, every day over summer preparing for the awards, which included a two hour farm tour and talk. It was a matter of getting everything we do, all aspects

$26 million retirement village development at Cambridge Resthaven The new development, called “Resthaven Views”, will initially comprise 15 one & two-bedroom homes & a show home in stage 1. Completion of the first 6 homes is expected to be in August 2014. Stages 2 & 3 of the building will roll out over time, & when completed there is planned to be 46 new homes in total & a large community centre. Resthaven Views is adjacent to the existing Cambridge Resthaven Village, Rest Home & Hospital grounds, & is accessed by its own driveway off Vogel Street. It is set further back from the road than the existing grounds & will give a real identity & feel of its own. Cambridge Resthaven CEO, David Hall, said, “The new village has been on the drawing board for quite some time, & we are really delighted to be getting underway with the project. The development is designed to offer affordable living & greater choice for people in Cambridge & the residents of Resthaven Views will have access to the full continuum of care provided by our rest home & hospital.”

Judging by the number of strong enquiries that have already come in for the new village, Mr Hall thinks that the location will be a real draw card, “It’s in a picturesque setting, with the advantages of being close to Cambridge shops & amenities.” Cambridge Resthaven is a not-for-profit organisation & it’s an organisation that is very much embedded in the Cambridge community. From its start, over 40 years ago, when the community set it up as a rest home, through to today where it also offers full hospital & dementia care, independent living in retirement homes & serviced apartments, as well as day programmes for people living in the community. It currently caters for 140 people & recently added to its already excellent credentials when it was awarded the Supreme Winner of the 2013 Waipa Business Awards. If you are interested in viewing the 3D model of the village & plans for the homes, contact Village Manager: Sandra Bennett on phone 07 827 6097.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES April 2014

The Friesian, Friesian-cross herd have responded well to conditions and set the farm record this season

of our farming business into a detailed yet succinct presentation.” James and Melissa were brought up on dairy farms in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty respectively. James holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Massey University and Melissa is a chartered accountant, having obtained a Bachelor of Management Studies from Waikato University. They have two children, two-year-old Benjamin and oneyear-old Joshua.

“Despite the drier conditions, we’ve had a cracker season, with some really good growth over winter and a nice warm spring. We always dry out here, so we budget on that and do a lot of our production before Christmas. “Perhaps we’ve used a bit more supplement than we otherwise would have — 60 tonne of maize, 140 tonne of palm kernel, 80 tonne of bought-in grass silage and five hectares of turnips — but the cows have responded well

and we set the farm record this season, so we’re pretty happy with where we ended up.” Looking ahead, farm ownership is the biggest goal on the horizon and they say that although it is hard to say what dairying will be like in six years time, their main focus is to keep a Kiwi, pasture-based system. “That’s our bread and butter — it’s what we know and where our margins lie. I actually enjoy seeing cows on grass and maximising the pasture-based system but there are reasons why there has been a shift in focus, so for us, it’s a matter of adapting to the changing agricultural environment.” James and Melissa agree that their strength lies in a mutual passion for the dairy industry and their good relationships with farm assistant, Hayden Thompson and farm owner, Joan. “We enjoy putting in the effort and the sense of achievement when we reach our targets. We also believe in creating a positive team environment to ensure the property is farmed in good heart.”

Little critters,

BIG FUN BY JOANNE SPEECHLY

Nestled on the banks of Waikato River, in over six hectares of parkland, is Taupo’s Huka Prawn Park.

T

he park was founded in 1987 as a pilot project to establish whether prawn farming was a viable option in New Zealand. In 1991, the park was opened to the public and today, the aquaculture venture is one of a kind and has grown into a thriving tourist attraction. “I’d been working overseas in the oil industry. I came home with a little bit of money and decided to invest in dry stock farming — but I stumbled upon a prawn farm operation instead,” says Richard Klein, who co-owns Huka Prawn Park with business partner, Terry Toomey “I thought, ‘well that’s a little bit different, I wonder if they’d be interested in a restaurant?’ and away we went. I bought a little army tent and a barbecue, got a temporary licence, and I started cooking prawns and pouring beer —

twenty-plus years later we’ve grown into an operation that attracts over a hundred thousand visitors per year.” The aim for Huka Prawn Park was to research and develop the ability to breed and grow tropical prawns in captivity, using waste geothermal heat from the neighbouring power station. The property is home to a 1,700 square metre hatchery, a 350 seat restaurant and interactive prawn park, which features prawn fishing, educational activities, adventure walks, trout feeding, water activities and geothermal features. The prawn park is a biological operation, managed by a full-time scientist and producing about five to six tonnes of prawns per annum. At any one time, it is home to hundreds of thousands of New Zealand prawns.

Fishing for prawns brings a smile to young and old

“Although it’s a specialised business, we’ve been able to diversify into tourism by building a park-type environment,

Hook a Prawn at Huka Prawn Park — one of the many fun activities on offer

The family ethos is important to us and the park provides an opportunity to have an affordable day out can be quite addictive. We’re now in the process of growing that further and we’re increasing our use of geothermal activity. “Taupo has quite a cold climate for 10 months of the year and because we’re already pumping so much hot water around the farm, we thought we may as well heat people as well. Part of this, is heated seats and foot baths, including a facility where people can sit on heated seats, with their feet

in a foot bath and fish for prawns at the same time. “The family ethos is important to us and the park provides an opportunity to have an affordable day out, away from computer games and cell phones. People can get wet, learn to fish, feed the trout, bring a picnic and spend the day here.” Huka Prawn Park is in the process of introducing more interactive water

We have a great working environment and that filters through to our customers. We get a lot of feedback about how friendly and efficient our staff are and that’s wonderful for us. “Another aspect I really enjoy, is seeing families arrive at the park and spend the whole day here. “As a company, we feel like we’re investing in the future of good family morals by providing a fun, interactive day out.

“It’s about doing, learning, getting out and running around. “Our goal is to continuously add value to the park.”

Building vs Buying – from only 5% Deposit* There are plenty of practical reasons to be thinking about selling and moving home – maybe you’ve outgrown your current property? The children have left? Or, maybe they are just arriving? Maybe the garage isn’t big enough? Or your home is starting to show its age and the thought of weekends spent entrenched in DIY warfare just doesn’t appeal. But one of the most common reasons is that your current home just doesn’t deliver the type of lifestyle you want. It’s just not up-to scratch anymore – it’s past its used-by date. The key question then is: how do you balance your needs and get the best value next time round? How do you get it right? That’s where building – not buying – comes into its own. As a home owner, you get your dream home, that’s everything you’ve wanted in a home based on your lifestyle now and for the future, plus a 10 year home first builders guarantee. When you begin thinking about building a new home it’s important not to get confused between cost and value. These are not the same things. Value is the emphasis you place on certain features and aspects in your newly built home – how important is the quality of construction? The features?

CAR

RES

EC ARE

How long will you live there and then based on that answer, how well can you live with the fact that you saved a couple of thousand on the kitchen that’s not quite what you wanted…? Maybe you should have taken the upgrade? Cost on the other hand is just that – how much will your new home be? When building a new home you should focus primarily on attaining the best value – not the lowest price, because ideally you do this once and do it right (and not ‘she’ll be right’). You can’t ‘undo’ a home once it’s built. A home constructed from low grade materials will be cheaper to build but in the longrun can cost significantly more through a combination of poor durability, maintenance costs and lower resell value as the home will be less attractive to the new owners. So, how much does it cost to build a quality home? The answer to this question goes back to your needs and wants – and everyone is different. But generally, the cost to build a good quality three-four bedroom house is less than you might think. In fact when compared to buying a second hand home – some else’s old pride and joy – it stacks up very well.

GAINING THE TRUST OF

Kaimanawa horses

BY DENISE GUNN

Sharyn Boness has been a long-time Kaimanawa horse enthusiast. And with the 2014 bi-annual muster coming up, she highly recommends the breed to others.

s a child regularly holidaying in a bach near Lake Taupo, Sharyn was always helping a neighbour with her ponies. Soon after Sharyn turned 13 years old, she was given a pony of her own. However it was the Kaimanawa horses that continued to fascinate her. “I always had an attraction to them after seeing them from the Desert Road when travelling through to Taupo,” said Sharyn. Following the 2001 muster, she was given the opportunity to re-home a Kaimanawa horse and ended up keeping him. “I gave him a chance and was impressed with his personality,” she said.

Located in the Kaimanawa Ranges in the central plateau region, these wild horses were first reported in the area in 1876. A combination of Exmoor and Welsh bloodlines were then intentionally introduced into the wild herd around that time. In 1941, following an equine disease outbreak, horses from the mounted rifle cavalry were also released. It is thought that in the 1960s an Arabian stallion was liberated to join the herd too. In addition, horses from nearby farms have either been released or escaped to join the herd. Following public protests in the 1990s at plans to shoot the horses as a method to manage the population and protect the environment, a mustering

programme was established. The most recent muster in 2012, saw 119 of the 191 horses rehomed. The remainder, many of which were suitable for rehoming, were sent to slaughter. The Kaimanawa horses have proven to be ideal all-round riding ponies and some have gone on to excel in several equestrian disciplines. The most outstanding to date is Watch Me Move. This horse, believed to have been mustered out as a foal, won the Grand Prix show-jumping title, the Pony of the Year, at the New Zealand Horse of the Year show in 2012. the horses arrived on her property they looked distraught and disorientated. She placed the new arrivals into loose boxes to give them time to become accustomed to their new surroundings, and the day-to-day routine of mucking out, feeding and watering. They also became used to seeing Sharyn regularly. “Once they were comfortable with that, I started handling them,” she said. Sharyn found that the horses started to respond quickly to the routine. “I have found that pretty much straight away they start to respond in individual ways to the routine. “They have all been fairly laid back and accepted most things except for a very young foal taken from her mother too young, and an old mare who was obviously quite a matriarch.” Sharyn has been so impressed by the trainability and personality of Kaimanawa horses that she made the

decision to adopt more. “By this stage the talk of a reduction in the herd was circulating and I made the decision to adopt a filly straight from the muster. “This filly was the first of my Kaimanawas that I was the first human to touch.” All of the Kaimanawa horses Sharyn has adopted have been matched up to her applications. She now owns four Kaimanawa horses on her Hawera property and has been surprised by their ability to adapt to domestic life. “They become very loyal,” she said. Sharyn plans to continue working with and training her Kaimanawa horses so they become reliable and trustworthy ponies for children to enjoy. She also intends to carry on promoting the breed to the public by showing her Kaimanawa horses throughout the country. “Although re-homing is very important, the preservation of the herd is also a very big priority,” said Sharyn.

The Kaimanawa horses have always fascinated Sharyn

The next Kaimanawa horse muster will be held in late autumn 2014 and more than 200 horses are expected to be mustered this year. Horses without homes to go to will be sent to slaughter. Enquiries and applications to adopt a horse from the upcoming

ADVERTORIAL

Fertility — to be or not to be

One of our Farmers, who had been on our programme for many years, entertained a discussion group on his farm, fronted by a Dexel consultant. There was a list of questions that our farmer had to answer and when they got to the infertility percentage the farmer answered ‘none’. The consultant replied that he couldn’t go on without a number, so after some discussion our farmer reluctantly answered ‘one’. In that area, at the time infertility percentages were over 20 per cent and with the continual bombardment of the soil with nitrates and phosphates these percentages will be on the rise. Today, infertility is quietly but surely affecting all life: plants, animals, people, fish, birds, bees and butterflies; those special pollinators. What’s happening to our planet? Agrissentials’ belief is that all fertility is generated through and from the soil. Our best on earth fertilisers are just that. They are designed to target the soil by bringing back health, vitality, energy and fertility back to soils. Agrissentials are achieving this through multi-mineral, microbial rich, energised fertilisers based on nature’s own principles that have been pumping and propagating away for the past 460 million years; since the time when the first plant popped its head above the soil. Here’s how it works: the soil microorganisms are the first creatures to dine at the mineral table, converting those raw minerals into a plant available form, wrapping them in humus so that they don’t leach and the plant roots go into the humus, taking up the minerals they need. Humus, which is carbon, not only holds the mineral but holds water

too, making both of these available to the plant. Humus increases the water retention quality of the soil. What a great system, especially during times of drought. The plant in return for the favours performed by the micro-organisms exudes sugars and proteins through its root system to feed the microbes. This is known as the symbiotic relationship between the plant, its roots and micro-organisms. The microbes are designed to look after and manage the soil. They are the farmer’s friend, a major part of the farmer’s team and they are excellent at looking after that part of the farm, the soil. They are a highly programmed soil management team. Why would you destroy this valuable team with chemicals? The more microbes in your soil the better your soil performs. They are temperature driven, will work 24 hours a day, become dormant when it is cold, but when operating, never ask for a pay increase, never go on holiday and if left alone are programmed to turn your soil into a , live, living, breathing, pulsating, energy rich fertile soil — that’s their job. When the plant receives mineral, it converts that mineral into an animal and human available form. All this transfer of mineral to plants, animals and people works at the cellular level, the ultimate level for maximum uptake of minerals ensuring health, vitality and fertility.

Fertility comes from food via the stomach. The more nutrient-dense the food, the better it is recognised by the cells to transfer into energy, growth and production. What’s happening in the gut of the animal and the gut of humans is the same thing that is happening in the soil which acts as the gut or stomach of the plant. The soil micro-organisms are the same microbes in the gut of fish, animals and humans. All life is intrinsically tied to these micro-organisms. The equation to grow a plant is micro-organisms + minerals + moisture + sunlight. Agrissentials specialises in providing the minerals and the microbes, the basis for a fertility rich soil. Times are changing, so it’s a good time to change to a system that works with nature and benefits the farm, family, production and the environment — that’s all bases covered. There’s never been a better time to call with Agrissentials’ atmospheric nitrogen fixing program incorporating clovers and nature’s nitrogen fixing team PLUS the freight free deals on this month. Ready for the Rain Dealing with the deluge It’s been another long hot summer in the, which has brought its share of challenges for farmers. But nature will take its course, and the cycle of the seasons is changing at last. This means that much needed rain is on the way — though it’s pertinent to note that the land, in its parched condition, may not be able to handle too much of a ‘tall drink’ at once. Smart farmers are making plans to

trap and store as much of the coming deluge as possible, with warnings still echoing of possible further dry summers in the future. Diggers are out in force reinforcing and revitalising dams which have seen some big ups and downs over

the last few seasons, and those same machines are also being turned to the maintenance of races and roadways across the north. Another concern, especially in the dry season, has been the reticulation and supply of water from dams, wells, bores and creeks to where it is needed. When water seems worth its weight in gold, a trickle or a drip can weigh heavy on the farmer’s mind, and a lot of time and effort has been spent this summer making systems watertight

Ready for the Rain livestock’s winter residence that bit more comfortable. After the big dry, it’s also a good idea to take a look at septic tank systems. The delicately balanced environment inside these underground tanks is easy to disturb, with smelly and potentially health threatening results. A good treatment involves introducing new, vigorous micro-organisms into the septic system, where they can get to work breaking down solids and scum.

will make sure that paddocks don’t make the transformation from a desert to a swamp, and of course properly drained soil is the literal seedbed for lush grass regrowth. As dairy herds come in from the cold to shelter in herd homes or receive their daily sustenance on feedpads, making sure that these areas are ready for some heavy, hoofed foot traffic is also high up the list. Those races and roadways mentioned earlier will need to be resurfaced to keep up with the winter weather, but the same holds true of the bedding which makes

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

e s at th See ual Fieldays n Natioite PE31 S

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

funds to refill their tanks and keep the taps flowing and the toilets flushing. A timely look at spouting and catchment systems for potable water at the homestead is not a bad idea this time of year. Check to see that the system is clean and flowing right — and remember that some tanks which have run down to the silty ‘last gasp’ may need testing to prevent contaminants in drinking water. Drainage may seem like the last issue to tackle when you’re sweltering in the summer sun, but as storm clouds gather it’s a major factor in helping rejuvenate the soil. Good field drainage

Think of it as ‘reinforcements’ for the army of little critters that do a very dirty job for you and your family! A dry spell is never welcome on the farm — especially an extended one as we are currently suffering through. But it’s never been more timely to keep a ‘weather eye’ out for the inevitable onslaught of winter — the land will need all the help it can get to make the most of this season of recovery.

LIVESTOCK HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra

I am up on the North Island at the moment teaching hoof care. During the workshops we talk about what causes lameness. When I ask the different groups what they think the main cause of lameness is ‘stone bruises, sole penetration and white line separation from twisting on concrete’ are the most common reasons given. The trainees are usually quite adamant about these causes, but when I ask them to give me some solid evidence to back up their claims, they usually goes quiet. There are some

attempts with answers like ‘we find the stones in the hoof’ and — ‘if I walk over stones on bare feet, I get sore feet’. This however is not conclusive evidence. I get stones stuck in the bottom of my gumboot but that doesn’t mean that those stones created the nice patterns in the sole of my gumboot, rather it is the case that the patterns already existing in the sole of the gumboot allow the stone to get stuck, and because you get sore feet when you walk with bare feet on stones doesn’t mean that the cow is experiencing stones in the same way. Remember, cows don’t walk on bare feet — they have hooves (like if you were wearing gumboots). Also, you may be sore if you try walking over stones for just one day, but if you walk on stones every day for the next few weeks you will soon be able to run on them. Why then is it that so many people are convinced about stones being the main cause of lameness? I have not yet seen any convincing evidence to support these claims. I know that a number of you who are reading this article will

think that I have no idea what I am talking about. I know this because the trainees tell me at the hoof trimming workshops. We are being told by advisors, veterinarians, colleges and ourselves that stones and twisting or pushing cows on concrete causes stone bruises, sole penetration and white line separation. I guess that if we say it often enough we really believe it, even to the point that we are not questioning our beliefs anymore. I challenge anyone to show me some real evidence. Give me something undisputable with which to back up these claims and I will write in my next article that I am wrong. If you are not sure about the whole thing but somebody else is making those claims, I would like you to challenge that person to write to me. This is not about wanting to be right or wanting to be different. This is about working out the truth. The reason why it is so important to know the truth about the causes of lameness is because it will influence the way we combat it and the effectiveness of our efforts. I do strongly believe that the physical forces of stones and twisting on concrete have very little or no effect

on bruises or white line separation. If it did then none of you would have a valid reason for having lame cows and there would not be any difference between making cows walk on stoney tracks and breaking cow’s tails. Both of them would be animal abuse, and therefore, both should be punished in the same way. Interested in further discussion? Email me at info@veehof.co.nz or visit www. veehof.co.nz to register for one of our hoof trimming workshops.

LIVESTOCK

Merinos — the new dual purpose breed by Rob Cope-Williams

There is no doubt that Merino sheep are the most recognisable wool breed in New Zealand. Any retailer in the fashion world will use New Zealand Merino as their main selling point, and rightly so. The locals and tourists are attracted to the fine texture, warmth and durability of the garments like ducks to water. But now I have discovered that the fine wool breed has come of age as a dual purpose breed and are being marketed as a terminal sire. Any negatives have been sorted out by selective breeding and rams are pouring out of the high country and being established on farms in the rolling hill areas as sires over Polwarths, Corriedales, and a raft of other breeds. The result is seen through a better wool clip off the progeny and of course the meat has that fineness the Merino is known for. Even the fertility has been looked at, and while there is no mention of the gene that was looked at on Haldon station all those years ago, and rightly so (you will have noticed I couldn’t bring myself to actually use the name of the gene) there is an improvement within the breed when it comes to a lamb drop that the ewes can feed and rear.

I am sure people won’t be surprised that Merinos are being so progressive. After all the breed has always been able to not only grab opportunities, but they create them and then grab them. I am not suggesting the other breeds are being left behind because they certainly aren’t. Corriedales and Romney’s, for example, are doing huge amounts of research and development work. The other positive is that farming is very inclined to be a series of cycles. While dairying has the front of the stage at the moment, other forms will rise up again. Remember that in past eras nearly every region had its own dairy company making butter and or cheese, and dairy farms were scattered around the factory as people supplied the factory with cans of product. It is all on a totally different scale now of course, but the dairy wheel turned back then and sheep and beef ruled along with cropping. Yes, OK — the present wheel isn’t likely to turn for a long time if ever, but when

Bowe Spreading Ltd

the wool and sheep meat wheel swings upwards again those who stuck with sheep will be in the pound seats and ready to go. It’s all about outlay and return on capital so do

some sums and you just might be surprised just how good sheep farming is even though it doesn’t look all that great from the outside.

The Government appointed Commissioner for the Environment, has again criticised the government’s fresh water policies, saying they are inadequate for the maintenance of present water quality. There is little in the national policy for fresh water management that would prevent the dire 2020 scenario in her report on water quality presented last year becoming a reality. Amy Adams the Environment Minister rejected the criticism and said the commissioner seemed to be deliberately forgetting that every council will be required at a minimum to maintain water quality. Bryce Johnson of Fish and Game said the commissioner’s comments were timely and that the current government’s enthusiasm for irrigation with very little attention to the serious consequences scares the hell out of them. Willy Leferink of Federated Farmers says farmers aren’t dumb, and are regulated by rules as well as economic sense and with every kilogram of nitrogen costing $2 farmers want to mitigate the

loss of nitrates. There is much in each statement that is factual and relevant, and most importantly little by little the discussion is getting to the heart of the matter — the annual application of more than 500,000 tonnes of urea to our 15,000 dairy farms at an average of 150kgN/ha. Thirty years ago very little urea was applied, and one of the consequences of applying nitrogen, now around 230 million kilograms annually is becoming apparent. In a number of areas the amount of Nitrate N in groundwater is rapidly approaching the level where health warnings will have to be issued. It’s been claimed that New Zealand’s water is already ‘stuffed’ and we don’t accept that, however large dairy farm developments currently applying for irrigation rights claiming Nitrate N

leaching losses will be mitigated by ‘yet to be developed technology’ highlights a real issue. It takes ten years for sufficient information to be gained to know whether a new product or process will actually provide the desired results, and even if the ‘yet to be developed technology’ was available tomorrow ten years is too long to wait. The only valid argument for the continued use of fertiliser nitrogen is that much less pasture would be grown without its use. Not one of the scientists that have supported our work agrees with that. MAF pasture measurements from the late 70s early 80s recorded annual pasture growth in excess of 18 tonne of dry matter annually without the use of nitrogen fertiliser.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

FA R M W H E E L S by Andy Bryenton

Classic status well deserved

The 2014 Hilux is well and truly here, and many fans of the evergreen utility favourite may be wondering where the bells, whistles, smoke and mirrors are going to pop out from. Toyota aren’t here to reinvent the wheel this year, however — the Hilux for today is a fettled and sharpened version of the Hilux of ’13, not the game changer which Toyota’s skunk-works engineers are currently still working on for two years down the track.

So, like an ageing rocker, the ute which still commands a hefty slice of both market share and genuine Kiwi affection takes to the stage with an artful facelift, a bit of new technology, and — most importantly — the chops to put newcomers in their place. The Hilux is ageing better than many of its contemporaries in the ute world — it rides with aplomb, pulls off the family car/workman’s mate crossover with consummate skill, and at the top of the utility tree it’s still going head to head with the phenomenon which is the Ford Ranger. What this new look 2014 package really offers (apart from a useful reversing camera, which is a handy addition) is a look at just how far ahead of the curve the Toyota was when it was an all-new model. Jump behind the wheel today and you’ll find it comfortable and competent, a proper contender with the pricier VW Amarok and the aforementioned Ranger. There’s plenty of power from that three litre turbo diesel, even if it isn’t a new unit, and a level of ride and refinement exclsatisfy the modern demand which should . gs

for a vehicle that carts fence posts Monday to Friday and can take the family to church on Sunday. There’s even the welcome return of Toyota’s 6-cylinder petrol 4-litre to the lineup, the perfect mate for a new five-speed manual box if you want chop-down passing power and towing grunt. A good time then, to reflect on how the Kiwi ute has changed over the years. And the Hilux is the perfect place from which to do so, because — and this is the important part — nearly every one of us has driven, owned or at least been a passenger in something with the Hilux badge at some point. Take that memory, and recall it as you try out 2014’s iteration. The Toyota’s new, grown-up sensibilities won’t be growing old with the New Zealand public any time soon.

venerable quad bike in several rural roles. But now that the market for UTVs has grown, it’s up to farmers to choose the wisest investment for their dollar, weighing up price and practicality with another very important factor — is the machine they select going to be tough enough to handle all that farming in New Zealand can throw at it? That’s a question which has been answered by a New Zealand-new series of UTVS, made in the United States by long established off-road manufacturers American Sportsworks. This company has been turning out rugged vehicles for the trail and farm for more than half a century. Now these tough, no-nonsense machines are here in New Zealand, selectively imported to provide an alternative for farmers seeking to upgrade their fleets. The Landmaster series incorporates several revolutionary hybrid UTVS, balancing electric motors with petrol engines in the same manner as the McLaren P1 — or the more humble Prius. Pure electric models are also available to save big dollars on fuel.

WAIKATO TRACTORS LTD

More power on tap from less thirsty puma Versatility is very much the key to farming success these days, and while many farmers are expanding into new fields of endeavour, their old one-purpose tractors are finding it hard to keep up. Contractors too, demand more use from their investment, and hate to see a machine worth tens of thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of dollars left sitting idle in the shed while other tools pick up the slack. Case IH, the well-known agricultural brand with the big red presence on Kiwi farms, have been trying to crack this puzzle for decades, with more than fair success. Now they’ve released a new refinement to their ‘swiss army knife’ Puma series of tractors, sharpening it up for even better performance in a variety of rural roles. “The 2014 Tier 4 B Puma model tractors now offer more power than ever before, in addition to an enhanced cab that was first introduced in late-model Tier 4A Puma tractors. These new Puma tractors can be equipped with advanced end-of-row controls and new rear remote control on the MultiFunction handle,” says Dave Bogan, Case IH Marketing Manager for Puma and Maxxum tractors. This means in practical terms that the same machine can be fitted out for both cropping (where it’s an established leader in the row-crop field) across to livestock farming. Add-ons and extra tools able to be fitted to the powerful little Puma which make it great for

specialised tasks. Available in up to a 6.7 litre, 240 horse engine size, the Puma range is also engineered to use less fuel, by way of Case IH’s innovative selective catalytic reduction system and smart engine ECU mapping. Added to this multi-role capability is another key component. Case promotional materials refer to the Puma’s cab as a farmer’s boardroom office in the field, and every effort has been made to make a day behind the Puma’s wheel a comfortable one. Heightened visibility and ease of operation were also red-flagged by Case IH engineers as points of supreme importance, and so the cab floats above the wheels and chassis with acres of glass, commanding a position from which the driver can contemplate which of many tasks he’s going to tackle next with this sharp and competent machine.

RURAL WOMEN

Letterbox campaign helps raise awareness by Joanne Speechly

Rural delivery addresses should soon be receiving ‘It’s OK to Ask For Help’ stickers as part of a letterbox campaign, which aims to highlight domestic violence in rural communities. The Rural Women NZ initiative focuses on the importance of looking out for one another and encourages people to access rural health and wellbeing services. Rural Women NZ National president, Wendy McGowan, said 2013 was a year in which the pressures and anxiety levels of rural and farming life attracted close attention and ‘help can be the best gift of all’. The letterbox campaign includes a competition, which is being run in partnership with the national ‘It’s Not OK’ Campaign. People show their support by putting a sticker on their letter box, taking a photo — like the one shown — and sending it to RWNZ. “If we are worried that violence might be happening to someone we know it can be easy to say ‘It’s not my business’ but family violence is a crime and should be reported,” said Mrs McGowan. “Friends and family are usually the first people to see the signs of violence in the home and we encourage people to offer help — safely — if they are concerned. As members of Rural Women NZ we can take leadership on this issue and use our profile to bring it out into

the open. “We say it’s better to be wrong than sorry — so act on your gut instinct. We don’t recommend intervening in a violent situation but do recommend asking for help or advice or reaching out at a quiet time.” The Rural Women NZ letterbox sticker and awareness campaign will run throughout 2014. For more information or stickers, go to the RWNZ website: www.ruralwomen.org.nz. RWNZ members will continue to fundraise throughout the year to provide adverse events counselling opportunities for individuals and communities.

What is happening in your heart arteries? Last month we saw that heart artery plaques start with cholesterol becoming trapped in the walls of blood vessels. Free radicals oxidise trapped cholesterol to a dangerous form and over time this can lead to artery blockages. It makes sense then that less circulating cholesterol translates to less becoming trapped. There is a lot more to it than that, especially the role of inflammation, low antioxidant levels, high homocysteine and of course lifestyle factors such as exercise and diet. Cholesterol is transported by carriers called LDL and HDL. LDL transports cholesterol from the liver via blood to individual cells to do all the things it is needed for. High LDL is a risk to coronary arteries. HDL transports cholesterol being returned back to the liver so high HDL means your body is effective at recycling that which it cannot use. While statin cholesterol medications effectively reduce LDL cholesterol they can cause side effects such as muscle weakness, pain and general lethargy. This is mainly because they inhibit an enzyme needed to make Co enzyme Q10 which is essential for muscle energy. If you take statins I recommend a specific CoQ10 called CoQSol® which rapidly lifts circulating CoQ10. Call me for information on this. Some cannot tolerate statins and others with high cholesterol would rather use natural methods to balance their cholesterol. For this group, studies show that the most effective natural cholesterol balancer is a proprietary blend of citrus extract called PMF’s (polymethoxylated flavones) and palm fruit extract (tocotrienols). Tocotrienols belong to the vitamin E family and can help to balance the liver enzymes responsible for cholesterol production. PMF’s help balance the processes that make the LDL and HDL carriers for cholesterol. Give me a call if you need more information. RURAL WOMEN

Dairy Woman of the Year has plenty to celebrate by Colin Patterson

Northland farmer and accountant Charmaine O’Shea is the New Zealand Dairy Woman of the Year. Her work encouraging young women to consider agriculture as a career saw her named winner of the title at a gala function held in Hamilton. Other finalists for the award included Fonterra shareholders’ council member and dairy farmer Julie Pirie from Hauraki, and veterinarian and dairy farmer Joyce Voogt from the King Country. Judging panel convenor Michelle Wilson says

Charmaine is committed to dairying. “Charmaine demonstrates leadership in all aspects of her professional life. She is a champion for the environment. She is commercially savvy and successful in all her business interests, and she shares her expertise so that more women can undertake training and education about the business aspects of dairy farming for the benefit of the

Dairy Womens Network CEO — Zelda de Villiers, and Dairy Woman of the Year 2014 — Charmaine O’Shea

industry at national, regional and local levels.” The other two finalists both have years of experience, both in dairying and in helping their local communities. After graduating from Massey University, Julie Pirie spent 10 years providing extension services to farmers in Otorohanga, the Hauraki Plains and Coromandel areas. During this time, Julie and husband Brian bought their first farm. She has recently renewed her early interest in showing stock by registering the jersey content of their herd and

attending A&P shows — an interest shared by her two daughters. Joyce Voogt graduated from Massey University in 1985 and has been involved in dairy farming and dairy cattle medicine since 1989 variously as a milker, sharemilker, dairy vet and farm owner. She left dairy clinical practice in 2011 to join the newly established LIC Reproduction Solutions Team. This work in the wider dairy industry involves developing solutions that help farmers understand and improve the reproductive performance of their dairy herds.
